Abstract:Effective battery thermal management (BTM) is critical to ensure fast charging/discharging, safe, and efficient operation of batteries by regulating their working temperatures within an optimal range. However, the existing BTM methods not only are limited by a large space, weight, and energy consumption but also hardly overcome the contradiction of battery cooling at high temperatures and battery heating at low temperatures. Here we propose a near-zero-energy smart battery thermal management (SBTM) strategy for both passive heating and cooling based on sorption energy harvesting from air. The sorption-induced reversible thermal effects due to metal–organic framework water vapor desorption/sorption automatically enable battery cooling and heating depending on the local battery temperature. We demonstrate that a self-adaptive SBTM device with MIL-101(Cr)@carbon foam can control the battery temperature below 45 °C, even at high charge/discharge rates in hot environments, and realize self-preheating to ∼15 °C in cold environments, with an increase in the battery capacity of 9.2%. Our approach offers a promising route to achieving compact, liquid-free, high-energy/power-density, low-energy consumption, and self-adaptive smart thermal management for thermo-related devices.A smart battery thermal management strategy based on reversible water sorption of metal−organic framework provides an efficient method of desorption cooling in summer and sorption heating in winter.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Battery thermal management system is one of the most essential parts for the battery pack in electric vehicles. In this paper, a new battery thermal management system is developed through the combination of the battery pack structure optimization and the cooling strategy design. First, a new battery pack equipped with the hollow spoiler prisms based on the aligned battery pack is designed to improve the cooling performance. The best intervals design between cells and the optimal sizes of spoiler prisms are given. Second, the reciprocating air flow is applied to improve the temperature uniformity of the cells, and an indicator is put forward to determine the suitable reciprocation period of air flow. Third, the intelligent cooling method based on fuzzy model predictive control is adopted to adjust the cooling intensity according to heat dissipation needs and energy consumption. Finally, the ANSYS simulation results show that the proposed battery thermal management system can save 76.4% of energy compared to the conventional cooling system, while maintaining the average temperature of cells around the optimal operating temperature. And the temperature non-uniformity is reduced from 1.5 degrees C to around 0.6 degrees C.

Abstract:Progress of efficient thermal energy storage (TES) has become a key technology for the development of energy conversion system. Among TES technologies, sorption thermal energy storage (STES) has drawn burgeoning attentions due to its advantages of high energy density, little heat loss and flexible working modes. Based on STES, this paper presents an innovative resorption sorption energy storage (RTES), and the experimental system is established and investigated for energy storage and upgrade. 4.8 kg and 3.9 kg MnCl2 and CaCl2 composite sorbents are separately filled ill the sorption reactor, and expanded natural graphite treated with sulfuric acid (ENG-TSA) is integrated as the matrix for heat transfer intensification. It is indicated that the highest energy storage density are 662 kJ/kg and 596 kJ/kg when heat input temperature is 125 degrees C and heat release temperature are 130 degrees C and 135 degrees C, respectively. For different heat input and release temperature, the energy efficiency and exergy efficiency range from 27.5% to 40.6% and from 32.5% to 47%, respectively. The novel RTES system verifies the feasibility for energy storage and upgrade, which shows the great potential for low grade heat utilization especially for industrial process. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Open three-phase sorption thermal battery has recently received particular attention for its high energy storage density. Meanwhile, air source heat pump can be considered a potential heat source for open three-phase sorption thermal battery due to its broad applicability and high energy efficiency. However, research on the intergration of these two systems are rarely reported. A heat pump assisted sorption thermal batttery is proposed and evaluated based on a general thermodynamic analysis for charging process. Three indicators are targeted in terms of coefficient of performance (COP), energy storage rate and energy storage density. Results show that system characteristics present three different patterns, i.e., liquid desorption, crystallization and dehydration stages. When ambient condition is 20 degrees C and 60% RH, the maximum system average COP is 7.53, the corre-sponding charge temperature is 40 degrees C and end-state sorption capacity is 2.33 g/g. The optimal charging con-dition for comprehensive performance index is greatly affected by the weights of basic indicators. When the weight of energy storage density is dominating, three-phase sorption performs better. Within the range of this study, the optimal sorbent end state locates on either liquid desorption stage or dehydration line.

Abstract:Sorption thermal battery has attracted burgeoning attention which is considered as a promising method to reduce energy consumption for space heating. Sorption "reaction wave" model could be used to find the criteria for stable output. However, mechanism of sorption process evolution in reactor is still unclear since the method cannot derive more reaction details. The paper initially proposes a comprehensive wave analysis method which could bring more insights of sorption thermal battery from a heat and mass transfer perspective. The wave parameters are analysed and orthogonal experiments are then carried out. Results indicate that solid sorbents with type I and V isotherms have the advantage of stable heat supply. Air velocity and inlet relative humidity have the most significant influence on the output parameters. Besides, response surface methodology is adopted to evaluate the critical parameters, e.g., relative humidity, flow rate, temperature of inlet air. The optimal system energy storage density could reach 191.7 kWh center dot m(-3) when sorption reactor length is 0.178 m and the relative humidity is 70 % using zeolite 13X as sorbents. Therefore, the proposed wave analysis method is expected to become a potential solution which would guide sorbent selection and reactor design for sorption thermal battery.

Abstract:Sorption-based thermal storage has drawn considerable attention for sustainable and cost-effective thermal management and energy storage. However, the low sorption capacity of sorbents is a long-standing challenge for achieving high-energy-density sorption-based thermal storage. Herein, we demonstrate an ultrahigh-energy/power-density sorption thermal battery (STB) enabled by graphene aerogel (GA)-based composite sorbents for efficient thermal harvesting and storage with record performance. Scalable GA-based composite sorbents with high salt loading are synthesized by confined calcium chloride inside a GA matrix (CaCl2@GA), showing fast sorption kinetics and a large sorption capacity up to 2.89 g·g–1 contributed by the GA matrix and chemisorption–deliquescence–absorption of CaCl2. The STB realizes thermal charging–discharging via the multistep water desorption–sorption of CaCl2@GA sorbent with the humidity from air. Importantly, the lab-scale STB exhibits record energy density of 1580 Wh·kg–1 and power density of 815 W·kg–1 for space heating. Our work offers a promising low-carbon route for efficient thermal energy harvesting, storage, and utilization.

Abstract:Sorption thermal energy storage (STES) is a promising solution to address energy shortages and environmental problems by providing long-term or seasonal heat storage with high energy storage density (ESD) and the minimal heat loss. Due to the similarity in reversible working principles between thermochemical and electrochemical energy storage, STES is also termed as sorption thermal battery (STB). Different from other sorbates, e. g., water and methanol, ammonia-based STES is highly attractive due to its versatility in working conditions, especially for the applications like power generation and freezing. Thus, it is of great interest to uncover the full landscape of STB, which could bring more insights or serve as a supplementary counterpart to water-based type. This paper systematically summarizes the existing thermodynamic cycles and their performance to provide the key criteria for material selection and synthesis. Then, different adsorbents are reviewed, such as activated carbon, metal chlorides, and their composites. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art technologies in designing materials and developing prototypes considering real working applications. Based on research achievements, future challenges of STB are presented, which include developing new and efficient ammonia sorption storage materials, selecting appropriate cycle configurations, and conducting experimental tests to promote the practical use.

Abstract:Energy harvesting and thermal management in spacecraft refer to the adjustment, distribution, and comprehensive use of uniform adjustment, allocation, and integrated use of the spacecraft and subsystems, which have the advantages of reducing energy consumption and improving the overall performance of the spacecraft. The study is first briefly elaborated on the research progress of energy harvesting and thermal management, and then introduces the key thermal control technology of thermal management, mainly thermal bus systems, heat pump technology, and passive thermal control technology. Finally, the future development direction and research focus of thermal management are proposed, which lays a foundation for the future development of energy harvesting and thermal management technology.

Abstract:Adsorption thermal storage, which can store heat like a battery, reserve it when it is unneeded and release thermal energy on users' demands, has been acknowledged as a promising strategy for heat reallocation, especially water based adsorption thermal battery (ATB). This review aims to summarize the recent advances in this domain and provide perspectives for the further development of ATB, focusing on the design of adsorbent materials and the optimization of system configurations in the light of different application scenarios. Here, we start with introducing the fundamental mechanisms concerning thermodynamics and adsorption kinetics. Next, we elaborate properties and performances of various adsorbents and system configurations developed for ATB, with their advantages and limitations as well as design strategies discussed. Importantly, we introduce the application-oriented selection principles of diversified materials and system cycles, which could provide practical guidelines for overall design in various application scenarios. In the last section, we outline the challenges in this field from fundamental research and practical application aspects, and provide a future outlook for the development of ATB technology.

Abstract:An efficient battery thermal management system (BTMS) is crucial to ensure the working temperatures of the battery are within a suitable range and therefore guarantee performance. However, the current BTM methods not only are limited by weight, space, and energy consumption, but also hardly surmount the contradiction of battery cooling at high temperatures and battery heating at low temperatures. In this work, an innovative passive BTM strategy of Li-ion battery (LIB) pack based on sorption heat storage is numerically investigated. The as-synthesised thermochemical sorbent is supposed to be fabricated as a porous coating layer of batteries to regulate the temperature of the LIB pack, and the pack temperature evolutions under high discharge rates of 3C, 5C, and 7C are analysed. A multi-physics model, coupling electrochemistry of battery, fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reaction, is developed to study the dehydration/hydration processes in a proposed BTMS. These multi-physics fields are solved by using the finite element method discretisation approach. Compared to traditional BTMS based on phase change materials (PCMs), this sorption thermochemical-based BTMS can control the battery pack below 55℃ under these high discharge rates due to the prominent advantage of high desorption enthalpy. The maximum temperature differences of the pack using sorption BTMS are 0.8, 1.2, and 1.7 ℃, lower than that of PCM-based BTMS, and a fast temperature lift of ∼ 11℃ can be achieved for the LIB pack in the cool environment thanks to the exothermic adsorption effect. The sorption BTMS can adaptively achieve cooling and preheating of LIB pack and thus maintain the pack works under the desired temperature range. The results of this study may provide a new strategy and prediction on BTMS based on sorption heat storage.

Abstract:A promising compact sorption thermal battery is developed for low-grade waste heat recovery and combined cold and heat energy storage. Thermal energy is stored in the form of bond energy of sorption potential during the charging phase and the stored thermal energy is released in the form of heat energy and cold energy during the discharging phase. The operating principle and conceptual design of sorption thermal battery based on solid gas sorption processes is firstly introduced, and then the working performance of sorption thermal battery using consolidated composite sorbent of expanded graphite/manganese chloride is investigated. Experimental verification showed that sorption thermal battery is an effective method to achieve combined deep-freezing cold and heat energy storage, and its working temperature can be easily adjusted by changing system pressure. The cold and heat energy densities are as high as 600 kJ/kg and 1498 kJ/kg, respectively. Moreover, energy densities of different energy storage methods and sorption working pairs are compared and analyzed. It appears that sorption thermal battery is a promising compact high-performance energy storage technology for waste heat recovery and renewable energy utilization due to its distinct advantage of high energy density and broad range of working temperature. Abstract:There are various ways for thermal energy storage, such as sensible, latent, sorption, and chemical reaction. Sensible thermal energy storage and latent thermal energy storage are already in use. However, the drawbacks of bulk size (small energy storage density) and the strict requirement for thermal insulation have hindered their wide applications. Sorption and thermochemical reactions used for thermal energy storage have been considered as a future great potential product for thermal energy storage of solar energy, waste heat. or even electric heating, etc. The market thus needs such a "thermal battery," which should be with a variety of kWhs capacities. Several key challenges remain in the way of the development of an efficient sorption thermal battery: sorption materials with high storage density and low cost, sorption bed with good heat and mass transfer to ensure charging power and discharging power, being stable after repeated cycles, minimum heat capacity ratio between the inert materials to the sorption thermal energy; control of the output temperature and power to meet the use demand. In this chapter, recent progress in sorption thermal energy storage, including materials, systems, and demonstrations, were described. The detailed future researches and developing maps were also discussed.
Experimental Study on Heat Release Performance for Sorption Thermal Battery Based on Wave Analysis Method

Abstract:Recent developments in water-based open sorption thermal batteries (STBs) have drawn burgeoning attention due to their advantages of high energy storage density and flexible working modes for space heating. One of the main challenges is how to improve heat release performance, e.g., longer stable heat output and effective output temperature. This paper aims to explore the heat release performance of sorption thermal batteries based on wave analysis methods. Zeolite 13X is used for the experimental investigation in terms of the relative humidity of inlet gas, system air velocity, and the length of the reactor. The results demonstrate that the optimal stable temperature output time of the sorption thermal battery experimental rig is 80 min, and heat release per unit volume reaches 115.6 MJ for the most appropriate reactor length. Thus, the optimal heat release time of the STB under the condition of various relative humidity and air velocities is 152 min and 182 min, respectively, and the corresponding stable heat release could reach 161.1 MJ and 136.5 MJ, respectively. Therefore, the heat release performance of STBs could be adjusted by adopting the wave analysis method, which would facilitate the reactor design and system arrangement.
A New Strategy of Dual-Material Reactors for Stable Thermal Output of Sorption Thermal Battery

Abstract:Sorption thermal battery driven by air humidity is a promising alternative technology to traditional methods of burning fossil fuels for space heating. Its dominant design of one-material reactor faces technical bottlenecks of unstable discharging thermal output and low energy efficiency. Herein, a new strategy of cascaded dual-material reactors was proposed as a solution, by utilizing their different sorption characterizations at material level and "reaction wave" properties at system level. A proof-of-concept prototype was established, whose main and regulatory reactor were packed with AA-15% LiCl composite and SrBr2H2O, respectively. Experimental results demonstrated that the regulatory reactor has a strong stabilization function of the unstable output temperature of the main reactor, with the average output temperature fluctuations under 1.5 degrees C. The discharging/charging energy efficiency was increased by 0.4-1.7 times compared with one-material reactor. The output temperature level and heating power can be simply adjusted by changing the inlet air humidity and air velocity. Moreover, the influences of the lengths of two reactors on the thermal output and system operations were evaluated. Possible strategies to further enhance the multistage utilization of the charging energy were proposed. This new design strategy can contribute to the popularization and application of sorption thermal battery.

Abstract:Lithium‐ion batteries are used as the current main electrochemical energy storage devices, and lithium–sulfur and lithium–air batteries could be promising candidates for future electrochemical energy storage. For all kinds of batteries, thermal safety is the primary aspect to be considered before utilization. Thermal safety of electrochemical energy storage system is a series of work (from materials to system prospectives). Safety materials is the primary factor, and battery‐ and system‐level designs are critical for better electrochemical and thermal performance. Thermal management strategies, daily operation, early warning, and fire control are all vital parts for the safe operation and running of an electrochemical energy storage system. Electrochemical energy storage is one of the critical technologies for energy storage, which is important for high‐efficiency utilization of renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. In addition to the higher energy density requirements, safety is also an essential factor for developing electrochemical energy storage technologies. Lithium‐ion batteries (Li‐ion batteries) are commercialized as power batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) because of their advantages (such as high energy density, long life span, etc.), while for future electrochemical energy storage markets, lithium–sulfur (Li–S) and lithium–air (Li–air) batteries can be promising candidates for high energy density requirements. Therefore, this paper summarizes the present or potential thermal hazard issues of lithium batteries (Li‐ion, Li–S, and Li–air batteries). Moreover, the corresponding solutions are proposed to further improve the thermal safety performance of electrochemical energy storage technologies.

Abstract:Air humidity assisted sorption thermal battery has attracted increasing interests throughout the world for its strong ability to capture atmospheric moisture and the related heating effects. However, the controllable stable output temperature is still unrealized, which hinders the application potential. Here we discover the phenomenon of "reaction wave" happening in the sorption reactor for the first time and accordingly build a "reaction wave" model which sheds light on the mechanism for receiving stable output and provides design criterion for obtaining stable output. To further increase the storage density of sorption thermal battery, we put forward a design strategy of "dual-reactor" and establish a 1.3 kWh proof-of-concept prototype, which is able to warm up air from 20 degrees C to 38.1 degrees C for 5.51 h, and obtain a storage density of 240 kWh/m(3) higher than that of previous publications. Therefore, "Reaction wave" model is expected to guide sorbent selection and reactor design.

Abstract:Traditional battery management systems (BMS) encounter significant challenges, including low precision in predicting battery states and complexities in managing batteries, primarily due to the scarcity of collected signals. The advancement towards a "smart battery", equipped with diverse sensor types, promises to mitigate these issues. This review highlights the latest developments in smart sensing technologies for batteries, encompassing electrical, thermal, mechanical, acoustic, and gas sensors. Specifically, we address how these different signals are perceived and how these varied signals could enhance our comprehension of battery aging, failure, and thermal runaway mechanisms, contributing to the creation of BMS that are safer and more reliable. Moreover, we analyze the limitations and challenges faced by different sensor applications and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each sensing technology. Conclusively, we present a perspective on overcoming future hurdles in smart battery development, focusing on appropriate sensor design, optimized integration processes, efficient signal transmission, and advanced management systems.

Abstract:Utilizing hygroscopic materials for water sorption and desorption from the atmosphere involves the capture, storage, and release of both water and heat. Herein, we introduce a design framework tailored for salt-embedded composite hygroscopic gels and analyze the mass-energy flow during sorption-desorption processes. Through this framework, we develop a hygroscopic gel composed of zwitterionic and nonionic chains, which exhibits a controlled salting-in effect, leading to stable salt retention, high energy density, and water sorption capacity. When integrated into a multifunctional device with three distinct flow paths, it achieves an impressive thermal storage energy density of 7779.6 kJkg(gel)(-1), with a temperature increase ranging from 3.6-13 degrees C during heat release, and efficient heat storage within 90 min under mild heating at 61 degrees C. In water harvesting mode, the device yields a liquid water productivity of 0.97 kg(water)kg(gel)(-1). This research highlights the potential of atmospheric water sorption for simultaneous thermal energy storage and water generation.

Abstract:Sorption thermal battery is promising for long-term heat storage of renewable energy. Recent advances in threephase sorption thermal battery using fixed sorbent pursue remarkable improvement in energy storage density. However, the synergistic change in storage capacity and discharge rate has posed a challenge for capacity regulation and large-scale application. To address this issue, a three-phase sorption thermal battery accompanied with sorbent circulation is proposed, which completes crystallization while performing falling film heat transfer. Ambient humidity is utilized as working fluid to simplify the operation. A comprehensive analysis is conducted for LiBr-H 2 O and CaCl 2 -H 2 O working pairs in terms of energy density, coefficient of performance, temperature lift, and charge/discharge rates. Simulation results reveal that both the two working pairs exhibit high energy storage density (470.8 kWh/m 3 and 525.6 kWh/m 3 ) in the fully crystallized cycle, which is around 2.9 - 5 times compared to the conventional two-phase cycle. Stable and controllable discharge rate could be achieved via solution circulating and re -concentrating. The stable discharge of CaCl 2 -H 2 O could be much longer, owing to larger sorption capacity difference between hydrate and saturated solution (2.2 times of LiBr-H 2 O). With collaborative promotion in storage density and discharge stability, the proposed system shows great potential for real applications.
