Abstract:The p-n heterojunctions may contribute to the antibacterial effect, but the study on this issue is limited and the interpretation remains controversial. Herein, we designed p-n heterojunctions in CuO/ZnO nano-hybrids, demonstrating remarkable antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli (Gram negative) of 93.94 % and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive) of 95.69 % at an ultra-low concentration of 10 mu g/ml. Mott-Schottky analysis reveals the formation of p-n heterojunctions at CuO/ZnO interfaces, elevating the generation of reac-tive oxygen species, which is responsible for the enhanced antibacterial behaviors. The CuO/ZnO nano-hybrids with p-n heterojunctions are expected to be a high-efficient, broad-spectrum antibacterial materials for practical applications.
P-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots with Antibacterial Activity

Abstract:It is a major challenge to effectively inhibit microbial pathogens in the treatment of infectious diseases. Research on the application of nanomaterials as antibacterial agents has evidenced their great potential for the remedy of infectious disease. Among these nanomaterials, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and high biosafety. In this work, P-doped CQDs were prepared by simple hydrothermal treatment of m-aminophenol and phosphoric acid with fluorescence emission at 501 nm when excited at 429 nm. The P-doped CQDs showed effective antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of P-doped CQD were 1.23 mg/mL for E. coli and 1.44 mg/mL for S. aureus. Furthermore, the morphologies of E. coli cells were damaged and S. aureus became irregular when treated with the P-doped CQDs. The results of zeta potential analysis demonstrated that the P-doped CQDs inhibit antibacterial activity and destroy the structure of bacteria by electronic interaction. In combination, the results of this study indicate that the as-prepared P-doped CQDs can be a promising candidate for the treatment of bacterial infections.

Abstract:With the development of modern medicine, the use of antibiotics is more and more extensive, drug-resistant bacteria appear, the antibacterial effect of traditional antibiotics becomes weak, and new drugs are urgently needed to solve the problem of bacterial resistance. In this paper, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, polypyrrole (PPy) was synthesized by chemical polymerization, and PPy/CuO/CQD ternary composite was formed by composite with copper oxide. FT-IR and XPS were used to characterize and analyze the chemical composition of PPy/CuO/CQDs. XRD results confirmed the purity of CuO, and SEM and TEM images showed that the addition of CQDs made CuO nanorods distributed evenly on PPy nanosheets. In vitro antibacterial experiments showed that PPy/CuO/CQDs nanocomposites had high antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. When the concentration of PPy/CuO/CQDs nanocomposites was 0.5 mg/mL, the growth inhibition of the three kinds of bacteria could reach 99.99 %, and the antibacterial effect was realized by the synergistic effect of the three components. It provides a good idea for the development of antibacterial drugs in medicine. In addition, in vitro cell proliferation experiments showed that PPy/CuO/CQDs complex had an anti-tumor effect on HepG2 cells.
A comparative study on antibacterial activity of sulfur- and phosphorus- doped carbon quantum dots

Abstract:Effectively killing microbial pathogens without inducing resistance is a challenge, especially in the treatment of infectious diseases. In this study, sulfur ( S )- and phosphorus (P)-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using m -aminophenol as carbon source, thiourea and phosphoric acid as S and P dopants, respectively. Compared with S-CQDs, P doping could lead to a red-shift of the maximum emission wavelength. In addition, the as-prepared S-CQDs and S, P-CQDs exhibited unique antibacterial efficacy against both E. coli and S. aureus without developing drug resistance. In contrast, the S, P-CQDs had no preference for Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and they had a somewhat reduced bactericidal efficacy than that of S-CQDs, but S, P-CQDs had better bacteriostatic stability than S-CQDs. Such an excellent antibacterial effect might be attributed to the generation of a large number of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), which disrupted the structure and the regular surface of bacterial cell. Consequently, the prepared S-CQDs and S, P-CQDs could be applied as antibacterial drugs with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and without drug resistance.

Abstract:Co-ZnO QDs/C-MMT nanocomposites is prepared via a facile chemical precipitation method with cetyl-tributylphosphonium bromide (CTPB) modified MMT (C-MMT) as the carrier. TEM and SEM results show that Co-ZnO QDs could be absorbed on the surface of C-MMT, even embedded into the layered structures of C-MMT. Antibacterial performances showed the inhibition rate of 1 mL 3.0 mg mL(-1) Co-ZnO QDs/C-MMT composites to Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and fungi Aspergillus flavus could reach to 97.9 %, 95.6 % and 88.0 %, respectively. EPR results, TEM analysis and adsorption experiment indicated that Co-ZnO QDs/C-MMT nanocomposites, combining the high ROS production of Co-ZnO QDs and excellent bacteria-adsorbed capability of C-MMT and Co-ZnO QDs, thus display specific-targeting capability, high-efficiency antibacterial activity, suggesting the potential application as a novel antibacterial agent.
Novel Graphene Quantum Dots Modified NH2-MIL-125 Photocatalytic Composites for Effective Antibacterial Property and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:Bacterial infection threatens human health, so the design of efficient and stable photocatalytic antibacterial materials has attracted widespread attention. In this regard, a novel photocatalyst GQDs/NH2-MIL-125 (GQDs: graphene quantum dots) was prepared by the solvothermal method for photocatalytic disinfection. Since the addition of GQDs enhanced the absorption of visible light and also accelerated the transfer of photogenerated electrons, the photocatalytic performance of GQDs/NH2-MIL-125 was significantly improved. 5 wt% GQDs loading sample (2-GQDs/NH2-MIL-125) exhibited the best antibacterial properties. The killing efficiency by 2-GQDs/NH2-MIL-125 against E. coli and S. aureus (10(7) CFU center dot mL(-1)) increased from 40 % and 75 % by NH2-MIL-125 to 92 % and 93 % within 60 min, respectively. Moreover, through the single-wavelength antibacterial experiments, it was found that the introduction of GQDs led to a wide-range-responsive antibacterial effect. Through photocatalytic trapping experiments and ESR analysis, the dominant roles of superoxide radicals (center dot O-2(-)) were confirmed in the antibacterial process. Finally, by studying the state of bacteria via TEM, confocal fluorescent images, and gel electrophoresis, it was found that the active substances not only destroyed the cell membranes but also further destroyed DNA to achieve the purpose of completely killing bacteria. This work provides a new method for the rapid disinfection of pathogenic microorganisms using GQDs-related photocatalysts.

Abstract:Copper-free click chemistry has been used to graft quaternized poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (QPA) modified with azide to the quantum dots (QDs) derived with dibenzocyclooctynes (DBCO). The success of the quaternary ammonium polymer-modified QDs was confirmed by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), fluorescence spectroscopy, zeta (zeta) potential, size distribution, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The QPA-modified QDs exhibited properties of selective recognition and killing of bacteria. The novelty of this study lies in fact that the synthesis method of the antimicrobial QPA-modified QDs is simple. Moreover, from another standpoint, QPA-modified QDs simultaneously possess abilities of selective recognition and killing of bacteria over mammalian cells, which is very different from the currently designed multifunctional antimicrobial systems composed of complicated systematic compositions.
Quaternized carbon quantum dots with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity for treatment of wounds infected with mixed bacteria

Abstract:Abstract Quaternized carbon quantum dots (qCQDs) with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity were synthesized by a simple green “one-pot” method using dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride and glucose as reaction precursors. The qCQDs showed satisfactory antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In rat models of wounds infected with mixed bacteria, qCQDs obviously restored the weight of rats, significantly reduced the death of rats from severe infection, and promoted the recovery and healing of infected wounds. Biosafety tests confirmed that qCQDs had no obvious toxic and side effects during the testing stage. The analysis of quantitative proteomics revealed that qCQDs mainly acted on the ribosomal proteins of gram-positive bacteria and significantly down-regulated the metabolization-related proteins of gram-negative bacteria. Real-time quantitative PCR verified the expression levels of genes corresponding to the proteins with significant differences expressed by the two species of bacteria after treated with qCQDs. The variation trend of the detected genes was consistent with the results of proteomics, meaning that qCQDs played the antibacterial effect on bacteria with a new antibacterial mechanism.

Abstract:In this paper, ZnO and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were grafted by ultrasonic method to prepare ZnO/CQDs composites with good performance, through the study of antibacterial properties, we can find that the antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) is better than the Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), and it has low cytotoxicity, the antibacterial activity can be contributed to the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from their surfaces.

Abstract:Bacterial biofilm infection is perplexing people’s life. Systemic administration of antibiotics usually causes adverse effects and bacterial resistance. How to make antibacterial agents quickly penetrate and eradicate the biofilm without adverse effects is an urgent problem. Here, polyamine-functionalized carbon quantum dots (CQDs), abbreviated as CQD600, CQD1w and CQD2.5w, are synthesized by a simple hydrothermal treatment of citric acid and branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI) with different molecular weight (MW). It is found that the antibacterial activity is promoted with high MW of bPEI, which is due to the protonated amines on the surface of the CQDs. Moreover, in terms of eradicating mature Staphylococcus aureus biofilm, CQD2.5w possesses significantly higher activity than CQD600 and CQD1w because of stronger electrostatic interactions and longer surface coronas. Additionally, the cytotoxicity test exhibits the L929 cells can keep at high survival rates even treated with 500 µg mL−1 CQDs for 3 days. In this study, the surface chemistry related to antibacterial activity and low cytotoxicity give the chance in designing and developing better CQDs for biofilm infection.

Abstract:A composite based on Ag and carbon quantum dot (CQDs) doped bismuth metal organic framework (CAU-17) was synthesized by a one-step thermal solvent in situ growth. The microstructure, chemical composition, morphology, photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and photocatalytic activity of the composite were characterized. The produced composite with its unique energy band structure, enhances the visible light absorption and effectively delays the recombination of the photogenerated carriers. On the other hand, the modification with CQDs increases the concentration and transport rate of photogenerated carriers mainly attributed to their superior electron transport capacity and light trapping ability. The photocatalytic antibacterial effect of CAU-17/Ag/CQDs against common Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli) and drug-resistant bacteria (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), as well as its inhibition against HepG 2 tumor cell were investigated. The results showed that CAU-17/Ag/CQDs exhibited a photocatalytic antibacterial effect with an inactivation rate as high as 99.9 %. At the low dose (0.2 mg/mL), CAU-17/Ag/CQDs indicated a significant inhibition against bacterial growth 20 min after visible light exposure, whereas at the concentration of 0.5 mg/mL, CAU-17/Ag/CQDs completely killed all the tested bacteria. At the concentration of 0.8 mg/mL, the inhibition rate against HepG2 tumor cells reached 75 %. The excellent photocatalytic property of the as prepared composite contributed to the doping of Ag and CQDs, which fundamentally altered the morphology and energy band distribution. Such a composite can be developed into an effective photocatalytic disinfection system and applied to water purification systems, biofilm rejection, combating different antibiotic resistances, and tumor therapy.

Abstract:Bacterial resistance to antibiotics have become one of the most severe threats in global public health, so the development of new-style antimicrobial agents is urgent. In this work, quaternized carbon quantum dots (qCQDs) with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity were synthesized by a simple green "one-pot" method using dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride and glucose as reaction precursors. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: With the development of the research on carbon quantum dots, the application of carbon quantum dots in the field of medicine has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, quaternized carbon quantum dots (qCQDs) with antimicrobial activity prepared by specific methods were studied, including antimicrobial spectrum, antimicrobial mechanism and in vivo antimicrobial application. The antimicrobial mechanism of qCQDs was studied by proteomics and RT-qRCR, and the different mechanisms of qCQDs against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were also found. This study provides a research foundation for the application of carbon quantum dots in antimicrobial field, and also expands the application range of carbon quantum dots in medicine field.

Abstract:In this paper, Co-doped ZnO quantum dots (QDs) with smaller lateral size and high stability were prepared via a simple and one-step sol-gel method. We found that Co-doped ZnO QDs could more effectively absorb visible light and motivate the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes, resulting in the over yield production of superoxide anion (O-center dot(2)-) and hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) under environmental condition. As a result, the antibacterial activity of Co-doped ZnO QDs was drastically improved than that of bare ZnO QDs, and the superoxide radicals mediated oxidative stress plays a dominant role in the antibacterial mechanism. Besides, controllable construction of smaller size Co-doped ZnO QDs was favoured for the contact between the nanoparticles and bacteria, thus significantly decreased the transmission path of ROS and Zn2+, causing the markedly enhanced antibacterial activities.
Preparation of G-C3n4/cqds/ag2s Composite Material and Its Antibacterial Properties

Abstract:The emergence of bacterial resistance to traditional antibiotics and its global spread has brought huge threats to human life and health, and the need for new alternative antibacterial agents has become increasingly urgent. The rapid development of nanoscience provides a potential alternative to antibacterial therapy. In this study, g-C3N4 was synthesized using melamine as the raw material. It was then successfully combined with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and silver sulfide to synthesize a g-C3N4/CQDs/Ag2S composite material. Such combination narrows the band gap of g-C3N4 from 2.53 eV to 2.21 eV and enhances the photocatalytic efficiency. Consequently, it indicated photocatalytic antimicrobial effects against three strands of bacteria, Shylococcus aureus (Grampositive), Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus under the irradiation of visible light. Other than the common pathogens, g-C3N4/CQDs/Ag2S exhibited an appreciable inhibition against the well-known drug-resistant bacteria. With its antimicrobial features and excellent photoelectric properties, the as prepared nanocomposites show its potential in the development of new antimicrobial and photocatalytic materials.
Defect Regulation of P-N Scheme Cu2N O1–/PDINH Composites for Enhanced Photocatalytic Antibacterial Activities

Abstract:The defect regulation and p-n heterojunction of composites have gained significant attention due to their potential applications. Nitrogen (N) as doping heteroatoms and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboximide (PDINH) as an appropriate n-type semiconductor were innovatively and reasonably selected to enhance the photocatalytic performance of pristine p-type cuprous oxide (Cu2 O). In this study, the defect regulation of N doping (1) achieved the small-size effect of Cu2 O, (2) optimized the electron features, and (3) improved the kinetics of reactive oxygen species. The p-n heterojunction with PDINH was developed to sharply improve the light utilization of Cu2 O, from the UV region to the near-infrared region. As expected, the optimized Cu2 Nx O1-x /PDINH ( x = 0.02) exhibited excellent long-term photocatalytic antibacterial activities, with antibacterial rates exceeding 91 % against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Defect regulation and p-n heterojunction of Cu2 O-based composites thus provide a great deal of potential for future advancements in photocatalysis. Study on the Antibacterial Mechanism of Copper Ion- and Neodymium Ion-Modified Α-Zirconium Phosphate with Better Antibacterial Activity and Lower Cytotoxicity

Abstract:To improve the antibacterial activity of Cu(2+), a series of Cu(2+) and/or Nd(3+)-modified layered α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) was prepared and characterized, and the antibacterial activities of the prepared Cu(2+) and/or Nd(3+)-modified ZrP on Gram-negative Escherichia coli were investigated. The results showed that the basal spacing of ZrP was not obviously affected by the incorporation of Cu(2+), but the basal spacing of the modified ZrP changed into an amorphous state with increasing additions of Nd(3+). An antibacterial mechanism showed that Cu(2+) and Nd(3+) could enter into E. coli cells, leading to changes in ion concentrations and leakage of DNA, RNA and protein. The Cu(2+)- and Nd(3+)-modified ZrP, combining the advantages of Cu(2+) and Nd(3+), displayed excellent additive antibacterial activity and lower cytotoxicity, suggesting the great potential application as an antibacterial powder for microbial control.
Synthesis of P-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots from Keratin and Their Antibacterial Activity

Abstract:The misuse of antibiotics drives clinical antimicrobial resistance, with detrimental impacts for human health. Therefore, some new antibacterial materials should be developed to address the overuse of clinical antimicrobials. As a new nanomaterial with good biocompatibility and low toxicity, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are excellent candidates as novel antimicrobial agents. In this study, we prepared blue-emitting phosphorus-doped carbon quantum dots (P-CQDs) with an optimal excitation wavelength of 370 nm and an optimal emission wavelength of 445 nm by a simple and environmentally-friendly one-step hydrothermal method using keratin as the carbon source. We found that P-CQDs exhibited inhibitory effects on microorganisms, with the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.19 mg/mL against Gram-positive bacteria ( S. aureus ) and 0.31 mg/mL against Gram-negative bacteria ( E. coli ). The experimental results implied these stable fluorescence properties of P-CQDs possess good antibacterial activity. Thus, these findings indicate the P-CQDs based on biosynthesized keratin could potentially be used as an excellent antibacterial agent.

High-Performance Quantum Dots with Synergistic Doping and Oxide Shell Protection Synthesized by Cation Exchange Conversion of Ternary-Composition Nanoparticles.

Abstract:The insertion of cation impurities into quantum dots (QDs) as a dopant has been proved to be an efficient way to tailor their optical, electronic, and magnetic properties; however, the low quantum yield (QY) and poor photostability strongly limit their further applications. We report a strategy to coat a thin oxide shell around the heterovalent doped QDs to enhance their QYs and photostabilities simultaneously. In the case of Ag+-doped CdS QDs, the controlled cation exchange reaction between Cd2+ and ternary Ag3SbS3 nanoparticles not only realizes the Ag+ doping in CdS QDs but also generates a thin Sb2O3 shell around the surface of the QDs. Enabled by such, as-prepared CdS:Ag@Sb2O3 QDs exhibited enhanced photostability and high QY of 66.5%. We envision that the findings presented here will inspire more novel protocols for advancing the practical applications of doped QDs.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity toward Organic Pollutants Degradation and Mechanism Insight of Novel CQDs/Bi₂O₂CO₃ Composite.

Abstract:Novel carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified with Bi2O2CO3 (CQDs/Bi2O2CO3) were prepared using a simple dynamic-adsorption precipitation method. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to test the material composition, structure, and band structures of the as-prepared samples. Methylene blue (MB) and colorless phenol, as target organic pollutants, were used to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of the CQDs/Bi2O2CO3 hybrid materials under visible light irradiation. Experimental investigation shows that 2-5 nm CQDs were uniformly decorated on the surface of Bi2O2CO3; CQDs/Bi2O2CO3 possess an efficient photocatalytic performance, and the organic matter removal rate of methylene blue and phenol can reach up to 94.45% and 61.46% respectively, within 2 h. In addition, the degradation analysis of phenol by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) proved that there are no other impurities in the degradation process. Photoelectrochemical testing proved that the introduction of CQDs (electron acceptor) effectively suppresses the recombination of e(-)-h(+), and promotes charge transfer. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) suggested that OH, h(+), and OH2- were involved in the photocatalytic degradation process. These results suggested that the up-conversion function of CQDs could improve the electron transfer and light absorption ability of photocatalysts and O-2(-) formation. Furthermore, the up-conversion function of CQDs would help maintain photocatalytic stability. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism was proposed according to the above experimental result.
Synthesis of curcumin-quaternized carbon quantum dots with enhanced broad-spectrum antibacterial activity for promoting infected wound healing

Abstract:With the increasing incidence of multidrug-resistant antibacterial infections worldwide, developing new antibiotics to fight bacterial infections is urgent. The natural product curcumin has favorable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, but poor water solubility greatly limits its bioavailability, bioactivity and clinical application. Herein, to improve the bioactivity and enhance broad-spectrum antibacterial of curcumin, we synthesized quaternized carbon quantum dots (Q-CQDs) derived from the natural curcumin and 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTA) with highly solubility and stability by "double-thermal" method. It is proposed that the surfaces of Q-CQDs would still remain the active groups of curcumin and quaternary ammonium to boost the antibacterial activity. Experimental results reveal that the Q-CQDs possess excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and the activity is significantly higher than that of natural curcumin. Investigation of the antibacterial mechanism of Q-CQDs showed that Q-CQDs functionalized with -N+(CH3)3 had strong adherence behavior on the bacterial cell membrane. Like a "Trojan Horse", the bacterial cells lost their integrity, and the entry of Q-CQDs caused ROS generation and the efflux of cytoplasmic DNA and RNA, leading to the death of bacteria. The bacterial resistance of Q-CQDs was not observed, and Q-CQDs did not cause hemolysis and cytotoxicity. In vivo, the S. aureus-infected wounds, E. coli-infected wounds and mixed bacteria infected wounds healing tests with mice model indicate that Q-CQDs inhibited the bacterial population at the wound site, reduced inflammation and promoted wound healing. These results suggested that the Q-CQDs are a potential antibacterial candidate for clinical infected-wound healing applications and even bacteria resistant infections.
