Abstract:It is of great significance to develop a heavy metal stabilizer with simple synthesis process, low cost and acid resistance for long-term remediation of heavy metals in contaminated soil. In this work, a novel heavy metal chelating stabilizer, hexa(potassium dithiocarboxylate) functionalized star-shaped hyperbranched polymer with a trimethylolpropane core (TMP/EDA/HDTC), is studied for the stabilization effect on heavy metals in soil. The study results showed that the TMP/EDA/HDTC achieved a nearly 100% stabilization rate of bioavailable lead in the soil at a low dosage (1.5% w/w). Moreover, Pb stabilized by TMP/EDA/HDTC resisted the leaching of various environmental media, such as strong acid, strong alkali, acetic acid, and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid. The mechanism study revealed that TMP/EDA/HDTC's unique star-shaped hyperbranched structure characteristics with multiple dithiocarboxylate groups in different spatial orientations achieved double stabilization for heavy metals through the chemical chelation and the physical embedding to form a network of super macromolecule chelate complexes. The formation of the network structures was significant for heavy metal stabilization as the metals that were originally present in the exchangeable fraction and carbonate fraction were stabilized in the network structures and then transformed into more stable oxidizable fraction and residual fraction. With the increase of time, the proportion of stable fractions showed a slow and small increase until it tended to be constant, and this is critical for the long-term stabilization of heavy metals in contaminated soil.
