Abstract:With the rapid development and democratization of the internet and smart phone industry, online food delivery services have become increasingly popular all over the globe, namely in China. One of the unfortunate drawbacks of these delivery services is that they mainly use single-use plastics as food packaging, therefore generating large amounts of disposable food containers to meet demand. Such plastic containers reach the end of their service life after a single meal, and are then discarded as plastic waste. The sheer amount of plastic food containers discarded in this manner exacerbates various environmental issues, including one that is invisible to the naked eye: microplastic pollution. This minireview summarizes the history of food delivery services in China, from orders made face-to-face to digital orders, as well as the consequences introduced by the tremendous amounts of plastic waste generated by the food delivery services. Microplastic pollution could be mitigated to a certain extent by improving the classification, handling and management of single-use plastic containers in China. Furthermore, additional studies focusing on microplastic pollution caused by food delivery services are needed, especially as the use of these services is on the rise worldwide.

Ingestion of atmospheric-deposited microplastics through diet was similar in magnitude to presumed inhalation exposure, but 2-3 orders of magnitude greater than direct ingestion from food sources. Simple mitigation strategies (e.g., covering and rinsing dishware) can substantially reduce the exposure of atmospheric deposition microplastics through diet.

Abstract:Over the past decades, the plastic production has been dramatically increased. Indeed, a category of small plastic particles mainly with the shapes of fragments, fibers, or spheres, called microplastics (particles smaller than 5 mm) and nanoplastics (particles smaller than 1 µm) have attracted particular attention. Because of its wide distribution in the environment and potential adverse effects to animal and human, microplastic pollution has been reported as a serious environment problem receiving increased attention in recent years. As one of the commonly detected emerging contaminants in the environment, recent evidence indicates that the concentration of microplastics show an increasing trend, for the reason that up to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic litter is released into aquatic environment from land-based sources each year. Furthermore, microplastic exposure levels of model organisms in laboratory studies are usually several orders of magnitude higher than those found in environment, and the microplastics exposure conditions are also different with those observed in the environment. Additionally, the detection of microplastics in feces indicates that they can be excreted out of the bodies of animal and human. Hence, great uncertainties might exist in microplastics exposure and health risk assessment based on current studies, which might be exaggerated. Policies reduce microplastic emission sources and hence minimize their environmental risks are determined. To promote the above policies, we must first overcome the technical obstacles of detecting microplastics in various samples.

Abstract:Microplastics are widely distributed in the environment, including the atmosphere, soil and water bodies. They have been found to have toxic effects on organisms. The impact on human health is also receiving considerable attention. Microplastics can be found in drinking water, food, air and plastic products, and they can enter human body through the pathways such as ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. After exposure to microplastics, they can induce cellular toxicity and produce toxic effects on multiple organs and systems, including the digestive, respiratory, nervous, reproductive and cardiovascular systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review and analysis on the recent progress of human exposure studies, in vitro experiments, rodent experiments, and other model experiments in microplastic human toxicity research. It comprehensively analyzes the potential human toxic effects of microplastics, providing a theoretical basis for further research on microplastic human toxicity and its mechanisms. Furthermore, this paper highlights the knowledge gaps and provides the recommendations for future research on human toxicity of microplastics.

Abstract:Microplastics are widely present in global ecosystems, threatening both marine and freshwater species. Given this problem, it is vital to research where land-based microplastics originate and how they are transmitted to receiving waters in urban agglomerations. Research results should inform systemic mitigation efforts to prevent future contamination. This study established the multi-directional transmission network of a microplastic mass balance system using a source-pathway-receptor framework, and involving annual source stocks and pathway flows with considerable variations under dry and wet weather patterns. Details of a baseline scenario quantifying the occurrence and spread of microplastics in an urban agglomeration were also determined in the context of current environmental management practices. We demonstrated that the total stock of the six major pollution sources amounted to 5317.7 ± 2175.3 and 3320.1 ± 953.6 tons/a in dry and wet weather, respectively; and 2347.8 ± 766.9 and 1991.8 ± 701.8 tons/a flows directly entered the sewer system and receiving water in Shanghai, China, respectively. Prominent microplastic stocks were found in atmospheric fallout, industrial wastewater, and domestic sewage. These stocks were much higher compared to crop farming wastewater, aquacultural wastewater, and livestock and poultry breeding wastewater. Total microplastic flows entering receiving water reached 3207.4 ± 1071.6 tons/a; the largest contributions were from wet weather overflow (23.7%), direct atmospheric fallout (21.7%), wastewater treatment plant effluent (14.2%), industrial wastewater (14.1%), and surface runoff (10.4%). Weather patterns led to divergent microplastic transmission pathways and mass flows, revealing a lagging timeline mode and illustrating the basic spatiotemporal features of microplastic contamination in urban agglomerations. Terminal disposal practices retained about two-fifths of the microplastic flows that would have otherwise been transmitted into receiving water. Of these, land surface sweep contributed half of the retained flow. Improvements in WWTP removal efficiency, storm sewage interception rate, industrial wastewater collection rate, and sewer sediment dredge rate could further enhance the systemic benefits.

Abstract:Terrestrial agricultural plastic film (APF) residue migration triggered by soil erosion constitutes a primary disruption in the plastic waste cycle. However, the migration mechanisms of APF residue and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) emissions from APF debris into China's aquatic environment remain inadequately understood. This study assessed APF residue loss induced by soil erosion and the associated PAEs emissions from 14 crop categories across China for 1998-2020, employing an integrated estimation framework and high-resolution agricultural activity data. Our findings indicate that the APF residue loss ranged in 968.95-2081.76 tons yr-1 during the study period, peaking in 2016. Areas with high APF residue losses were concentrated in southwestern, central, northwestern, northeastern, northern, and eastern China. Moreover, PAEs emitted from APF debris ranged in 29.57-59.42 kg yr-1 over the same period, with emission hotspots identified in northwestern, southwestern, and eastern China. The APF application, meteorological factors, and soil properties collectively accounted for 33.82 %, 33.33 %, and 13.66 % of the total variance, respectively. Finally, the potential ecological risk posed by PAEs to the aquatic environment was found to be low. Overall, our findings offer crucial insights into the dynamics of plastic contamination and provide foundational knowledge for safeguarding aquatic environments in China.
Hierarchical and cascading changes in the functional traits of soil animals induced by microplastics: A meta-analysis

Abstract:Given the immense quantities of plastics in the environments worldwide, it is inevitable that soil animals are exposed to microplastics. However, a comprehensive elucidation of the cascading responses of different levels of functional traits in soil animals to microplastics remains unclear. A meta-analysis based on 80 published studies was conducted to quantify the hierarchical changes in soil animal traits from genes to survival under microplastics exposure. Soil animals substantially increased (by 62.1%) reactive oxygen species (ROS), copies of antioxidant genes increased by 35.7%, and antioxidant enzyme activities increased by 11.5% under the threat of microplastics. Unfortunately, the antioxidant responses did not completely eradicate the increased ROS. Animal traits at behavioral and survival levels were consequently significantly decreased (e.g., movement capacities, reproduction rate, growth rate, and survival rate decreased by 22.7%, 12.8%, 7.5%, and 3.1%, respectively). Microfauna endured more severe damage by microplastics due to higher ROS (63.7%) than macrofauna (33.5%). Additionally, round microplastics typically caused severe damage to soil animal survival rate that was inhibited by 16.6%. This study aimed to quantify the cascading responses of soil animal functional traits at multiple levels to microplastics, which will provide a comprehensive perspective for assessing the toxicities of microplastics in soil environments.

A Chemical Time Bomb: Future Risks of Microplastics

Abstract:Despite the controversy, the ecological risk of microplastics research has increased sharply from only one in 1966 to 495 in 2018, according to Web of Science with microplastics as keyword. To date, an upward trend of global microplastics mass emission was confirmed by many environmental scientists. The ocean is the ultimate destination of land-based microplastics sources; therefore, most of efforts were concentrated on microplastics in aquatic environment. In this brief article, the global release of microplastics and flux into the ocean in the recent decade were estimated roughly. The plastics fragmentation in the marine environment only accounted for 22% of total microplastics release (assuming defined emission rate per capita and fragmentation rate of plastics). Future research is needed for microplastics generation and retention in the terrestrial system, especially indoor environments. The accumulated microplastics over the environmental self-purification capacity certainly increases stress for the marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystem.

Abstract:China's takeaway food industry is growing rapidly, and bringing unprecedented demand for plastic packaging, which results in serious plastic pollution and increasing emissions of plasticizers of phthalate esters (PAEs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs). This study assesses the current and future situation of plastic usage for takeaway food packaging in China, and also analyzes the PAEs and GHG emissions brought by these plastics under different scenarios. From 2010 to 2020, the plastic usage grew from 2.92 to 101 × 10 4 tons, and brought 112–3845 kg PAEs and 43.6–1438 kt CO 2 e GHG emissions. Their distribution exhibited a clear 'two-line' pattern: higher features mostly located in Beijing-Guangzhou and Beijing-Shanghai railways. The socio-economic factors model performed better than the growth rate model for plastic usage prediction from 2021 to 2060. It is predicted that 40.6 Mt. plastic would be consumed in 2060, and they will bring 155 tons PAEs and 37.0 Mt. CO 2 e GHGs. At that time, biodegradable plastic replaced or plastic cycling cannot significantly contribute to national carbon reduction, unless using a temperature change of 2 °C scenario. Our work improves the understanding of PAEs and GHG emission from plastic pollution, and provides insight into long-term dynamics in the plastics management of takeaway food industry.

Abstract:Microplastics are ubiquitous in marine environments and can be incorporated into biological aggregates including marine snows and faecal pellets. These aggregates are suspected to be a major removal mechanism for microplastics from the surface ocean, transporting them to deeper levels and the seafloor as they sink and remineralise. However, simple budget calculations, observations, and model parameter testing suggest that aggregation might also lead to retention of microplastics in the upper ocean, sustaining contamination in biologically-productive environments. The ability of the biological microplastic sink to reduce water column contamination has relevance to the setting of ocean plastics pollution reduction targets, as are currently under negotiation by the International Negotiating Committee of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). Here we apply 8 idealised global pollution reduction trajectories, from 1-100% per year, starting from the year 2026 and ending in the year 2100 to an Earth System Climate Model with a representation of ocean microplastics and their aggregation in biological particles. We find that the global ocean microplastic inventory and surface concentrations stabilize within this century for reduction rates exceeding 5% per year but the inventory does not substantially decrease under any trajectory. Furthermore, microplastics are retained by marine biology in the surface ocean, where concentrations stabilise to a non-zero value over decades. Lastly we find that irrespective of scenario, contamination of deeper ocean layers continues to increase for the duration of our simulations via the export of microplastics by biological aggregates. These results suggest that ambitious targets for pollution reduction exceeding 5\% per year will be required to progress the resolution of the UNEA to ``end plastic pollution'' in this century, and that ongoing microplastic contamination of the marine food web may be unavoidable.

Abstract:Riverine outflow is the primary pathway for transporting microplastics from terrestrial to marine environments, making estuaries hotspots for microplastics pollution. However, how and to what extent natural and anthropogenic factors affect the distribution of microplastics in estuarine waters remains largely unknown. A meta-analysis of 126 estuaries from 93 studies revealed a global median microplastics abundance of 196.9 items/m 3 , with a range from 0.007 ± 0.003 to 792,000 ± 138,000 items/m 3 . Microplastics were more abundant in estuaries in Asia and Oceania compared to Europe and South America. The microplastic abundance in estuarine waters was positively correlated with regional population density, per capita plastic waste, agricultural land proportion, and silt content, while the human development index (HDI) and mean annual precipitation displayed negative effects on microplastic abundance. Notably, HDI was the dominant factor influencing microplastic abundance in estuarine waters. In developing countries, microplastic abundance in estuarine waters showed positive changes, whereas it remained stable in developed countries over time. This study offers critical insights into the effects of natural and anthropogenic factors on the distribution patterns of microplastics in estuarine waters, providing important support for future management of microplastics pollution in estuaries.

Abstract:Microplastics (plastic particles < 5 mm) have received increasing attention in recent years due to their wide distribution in the environment. A bibliometric analysis was carried out using Web of Science, with significant contributions being observed by English and French research institutions in the microplastic field. Analysis of keywords revealed that the research hotspots were distribution, abundance, and risks of microplastics in the environment. Microplastics have been detected in water bodies and sediments of seven continents and four oceans. However, meaningful comparisons among studies are difficult due to the inconsistencies in sampling methods and concentration units. Moreover, studies have shown that the chemical composition of microplastics, as well as the pollutants adsorbed onto them, can have negative impacts on marine organisms. It remains unclear whether and how the consumption of aquatic products contaminated with microplastics affect human health. Therefore, it is advised that future research should focus on the transfer, accumulation, and effects of microplastics in the food chain.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) accumulation in the environment has become an issue of human and environmental importance. Great efforts were made recently to identify the sources of MP exposure to humans and their release into the environment. Here, we employed spectroscopic techniques to identify and characterize MP in consumer plastic food containers that are, in huge quantity, used for food delivery and disposable plastic cups for daily drinking. We determined the average weight of isolated MP per pack to be 12 ± 5.12 mg, 38 ± 5.29 mg, and 3 ± 1.13 mg for the round-shaped, rectangular-shaped plastic container and disposable plastic cups, respectively, with various morphological features including cubic, spherical, rod-like as well as irregular shapes, which may either be consumed by humans or released into the environment. This study demonstrates that new plastic containers can be an important source of direct human and environmental exposure to microplastics. Most importantly, our results indicated that necessary attention must be given to morphological features of realistic MPs when evaluating their risks to humans and the environment.

Abstract:The atmosphere plays a vital role in microplastic (MP) transport, facilitating continuous exchanges with land and ocean. However, the sources of atmospheric MP remain unclear. Previous studies suggested that the ocean is the primary source, with global emissions reaching up to 8,600 Gg year(-1). Here, we use global atmospheric abundance data, a newly developed atmospheric model, and optimal estimation to constrain the atmospheric sources. We find that the global atmospheric MP emissions are 324 (73-1,450) Gg year( -1). The ocean source is estimated to have a much smaller global emission (171 [38-764] Gg year( -1)] than previously believed, followed by road-related sources (115 [26-513] Gg year (-1)) including the suspension of tire and brake wears and mismanaged plastic waste. We simulate a net land-to-ocean transport by the atmosphere (25 Gg year (-1)). This highlights the importance of controlling terrestrial sources, and more data are needed to improve our understanding of the atmospheric MP cycle.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution is a global enviromental issues. This is the first time in recent decades that quantitative and qualitative evidence from bibliometrics and Altmetric has been used to conduct an in-depth statistical analysis of global microplastics research knowledge and demonstrate research progress, trends and hotspots. We comprehensively searched the Web of Science Core Collection scientific database from its inception (1986) to September 21, 2019. The study shown that the number of papers on microplastics has increased significantly since 2011. Worldwide, researchers in the field come mostly from Western Europe, mainly spread in the UK, Netherlands and Belgium. With the exception of China, the contribution of developing countries was very limited. Moreover, this study systematically elaborated the hotspots in this field (especially in ecological toxicity and human health risks). The results shown that research on marine systems and marine plankton is still dominant. Since human beings are the ultimate consumers of the food chain, microplastics may have potential effects on the human respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract. Towards that end, some topics and perspectives are noted that could indicate the current scientific hotspots and guide future research directions.

However, few studies have investigated the presence of microplastics in humans. This study identified and quantified the microplastic content in human feces.Methods: In total, 26 male students aged 18-25 years were recruited in Beijing, China. Anthropometric measurements, including height and weight, were collected. A self-administered 7-day 24-h fluid intake record was used to document fluid intake, and food intake was recorded 3 days before the collection of feces. Newly excreted feces were collected by participants using a sterile fecal collector. Microplastics in the remaining fecal residues were measured using Fourier transform microinfrared spectroscopy after pretreatment. Eight types of microplastic were identified and analyzed.Findings: The fecal samples of 23 (95·5%) participants tested positive for microplastics. Among these 23 samples, the abundance of microplastic varied from 1 particle/g to 36 particles/g, and the mass of microplastics ranged from 0·01 to 14·6 mg. Qualitative analysis of the microplastic indicated the presence of one to eight types of microplastic in each sample, with the relative mass abundance ratio of polypropylene (PP) being the highest at 61·0%. PP was found in 95·8% of fecal samples. Compared with the participants in the high-abundance group, those in the low-abundance-group consumed more bottled water and beverages (1071 vs 840 mL, Z = -2·078, p = 0·038).Interpretation: Various types of microplastic were detected in human feces, with the highest proportion being PP. Participants with more microplastics in their feces consumed more bottled water and beverages. Abstract:Microplastics are an emerging hazard in the marine environment, and considered to eventually sink into sediments. An investigation into the long-term variation of microplastic accumulation in sediment cores is essential for understanding the historical trend of this contamination and its response to human activities. In this study, the multidecadal changes of microplastic abundances in two sediment cores from the inner shelf of the East China Sea (ECS) were revealed by two methods, i.e., a visual enumeration method based on scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and a quantitative method based on microplastic-derived carbon (MPC) abundances. The features of microplastics were determined via SEM-EDS and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (μ-FTIR). The results reveal a multidecadal increasing trend of microplastic accumulation in the coastal sediments of the ECS since the 1960s, which may be jointly governed by the release of plastic wastes and oceanographic dynamics. Meanwhile, the breakpoint of the exponential growth of microplastics in the ECS occurs in 2000 AD, which well matches the rapid increasing of plastic production and consumption in China. Further, based on the MPC contents in sediments, the influence of microplastics on the quantitative evaluation of carbon storage in the ECS has been examined for the first time, revealing an insignificant (<2% before 2014 AD) but potentially-increasing (6.8% by 2025 AD) contribution of microplastics to carbon burial. Our results may provide the important data for evaluating and mitigating the impact of microplastics on the marine environment.
