Abstract:In the first part of the paper we give a tensor version of the Dirac equation. In the second part we formulate and analyse a simple model equation which for weak external fields appears to have properties similar to those of the 2-dimensional Dirac equation.

Abstract:The Dirac equation is one of the most fundamental equations of modern physics. It is a spinor equation, but some tensor equivalents of the equation were proposed previously. Those equivalents were either nonlinear or involved several components of the Dirac field. On the other hand, the author showed previously that the Dirac equation in electromagnetic field is equivalent to a fourth-order equation for one component of the Dirac spinor. The equivalency is used in this work to derive a linear tensor equivalent of the Dirac equation for just one component. This surprising result can be used in applications of the Dirac equation, for example, in general relativity or for lattice approximation of the Dirac field, and can improve our understanding of the Dirac equation.

Abstract:On the basis df the generalized invariant formulation, the invariant-related unitary transformation method is used to study the evolution of a quantum Dirac field in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spatially flat spacetime. We first solve the functional Schrodinger equation for a free Dirac field and obtain the exact solutions. We then investigate the way of extending the method to treat the case in which there is an interaction between the Dirac field and a scalar field.

Abstract: We provide an alternative approach to relativistic dynamics based on the Feshbach projection technique. Instead of directly studying the Dirac equation, we derive a two-component equation for the upper spinor. This approach allows one to investigate the underlying physics in a different perspective. For particles with small mass such as the neutrino, the leading order equation has a Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, implying there is no leakage between the upper and lower spinors. In the weak relativistic regime, the leading order corresponds to a non-Hermitian correction to the Pauli equation, which takes into account the non-zero possibility of finding the lower-spinor state and offers a more precise description.

Abstract:This paper presents a relativistic symmetrical interpretation of the Dirac equation in 1+1 dimensions which predicts no zitterbewegung for a free spin-1/2 particle. This could resolve the longstanding puzzle of zitterbewegung in relativistic quantum mechanics, and help clarify the physical meaning of the zitterbewegung currently under investigation in many-particle systems. Together with an earlier paper describing a relativistic symmetrical interpretation of the Klein-Gordon equation \cite{Heaney1}, this new interpretation resolves some inconsistencies in the conventional interpretations of both equations. This new interpretation also makes several experimental predictions that differ from the conventional interpretation of the Dirac equation.

Abstract:It is proven that the usual quadratic general-covariant Lagrangian for the Dirac field leads to a symmetric, divergence-free energy-momentum tensor in the standard Riemannian framework of space-time without torsion, provided the tetrad field components are the only quantities related to gravitation that are varied independently.

Abstract:Dirac-Coulomb type differential equation and its solution relativistic exponential-type spinor orbitals are introduced. They provide a revised form for operator invariants, namely Dirac invariants, simplifying the treatment of the angular components in calculation of many-electron systems. The relativistic Coulomb energy is determined by employing a spectral solution to Poisson's equation for the one-electron potential, which is expressed in terms of radial functions involving incomplete gamma functions. The computation for incomplete gamma functions posses challenges due to slow convergence rate associated with their series representation. Such difficulties are eliminated through use of the bi-directional method along with hyper-radial functions. A new formulation for relativistic auxiliary functions that improve the efficiency in Coulomb energy calculations is presented. These formulations also contribute to inquiring into orthogonal expansions for solutions to Poisson's equation using complete orthonormal sets of exponential orbitals with non-integer principal quantum numbers. They may provide a meaningful alternative series representations.

Abstract:A Dirac equation in a covariant form with respect to proper orthochronous rotations in (4 + 1)-dimensional pseudo-orthogonal space, i.e. Minkowski space extended by one real dimension is introduced. It contains a five-vector potential with a non-electromagnetic fifth component. The invariance of this equation under the CPT transformation is conditioned by the assumption that the real fifth coordinate changes its sign under charge conjugation, and that it simultaneously changes its sign either under time reversal or under space inversion. The energy levels of an electron under the simultaneous action of Coulomb and central gravitational fields are determined. To this end, (1) new eigenspinors of the total angular momentum operator are derived, with non-zero entries in the first and fourth or in the second and third row of the column matrix and (2) a scalar function is constructed from doubly-periodic Jacobian elliptic functions which, in the limit of the vanishing modulus of the elliptic functions, replaces the function exp(i t) in the stationary-state solutions. The iterated five-dimensional equation contains the ten components of the antisymmetric field tensor. It also contains a term determining the potential energy operator of electron spin density in a non-electromagnetic field. The Pauli equation is derived from the five-dimensional equation, with the transformational characteristics of the original equation. It contains a spin-orbit coupling term depending on the non-electromagnetic potential.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear Dirac equation in 1 + 1 dimension with scalar-scalar self-interaction in the presence of external forces as well as damping of the form gamma(0)f(x, t) - i mu gamma(0)Psi, where both f,{f(j) = r(j)e(iKjx)} and Psi are two-component spinors. We develop an approximate variational approach using collective coordinates for studying the time dependent response of the solitary waves to these external forces. In our previous paper we assumed K-j = K, j = 1, 2 which allowed a transformation to a simplifying coordinate system, and we also assumed the 'small' component of the external force was zero. Here we include the effects of the small component and also the case K1 not equal K2 which dramatically modifies the behavior of the solitary wave in the presence of these external forces.

Abstract:In this paper we provide using the Clifford and spin-Clifford formalism and some few results of the extensor calculus a derivation of the conservation laws that follow directly from the Dirac-Hestenes equation (DHE) describing a Dirac-Hestenes spinor field (DHSF) in interaction with an external electromagnetic field without using the Lagrangian formalism. In particular, we show that the energy-momentum and total angular momentum extensors of a DHSF is not conserved in spacetime regions permitting the existence of a null electromagnetic field F but a non null electromagnetic potential A. These results have been used together with some others recently obtained (e.g., that the classical relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi equation is equivalent to a DHE satisfied by a particular class of DHSF) to obtain the correct relativistic quantum potential when the Dirac theory is interpreted as a de Broglie-Bohm theory. Some results appearing in the literature on this issue are criticized and the origin of some misconceptions is detailed with a rigorous mathematical analysis.

Abstract:We discuss the problem of canonical quantization of a free massive spinor field in the Schwarzschild spacetime. It is shown that a consistent procedure of canonical quantization of the field can be carried out without taking into account the internal region of the black hole, the canonical commutation relations in the resulting theory hold exactly and the Hamiltonian has the standard form. Spin sums are obtained for solutions of the Dirac equation in the Schwarzschild spacetime.

Abstract:The paper analyzes time propagation of Dirac observables - using Heisenberg representation - in the light of various pseudodifferential operator algebras (cf. [Co3], [Co15], [Co16]). Our theory gives (i) a mechanical angular momentum (the spin), but also (ii) another real 3-vector, travelling with the particle, with magnetic properties (its motion guided by the magnetic field around it, but not in the proper relativistic way). The above is discussed for potentials vanishing at infinity. But we also look at a Dirac particle in the field of a plane polarized X-ray wave, trying to analyze the Compton effect. The propagations of energy and momentum (in the X-ray's direction) are coupled - they allow a joint asymptotic expansion with terms representing change of energy by $nh\nu$ and momentum by $nh\nu/c$, with n=0,1,2, ..., valid for large frequencies, i.e., large momentum coordinates. Possible interpretation: A collision of the electron-positron with 0, 1, 2, ... n Photons of energy $h\nu$, affecting a change of energy-momentum. Note, this does not require QFT.

Abstract:Dirac's leaping insight that the normalized anti-commutator of the {\gamma}^{\mu} matrices must equal the timespace signature {\eta}^{\mu}{\nu} was decisive for the success of his equation. The {\gamma}^{\mu}-s are the same in all Lorentz frames and "describe some new degrees of freedom, belonging to some internal motion in the electron". Therefore, the imposed link to {\eta}^{\mu}{\nu} constitutes a separate postulate of Dirac's theory. I derive a manifestly covariant first order equation from the direct quantization of the classical 4-momentum vector using the formalism of Geometric Algebra. All properties of the Dirac electron & positron follow from the equation - preconceived 'internal degrees of freedom', ad hoc imposed signature and matrices unneeded. In the novel scheme, the Dirac operator is frame-free and manifestly Lorentz invariant. Relative to a Lorentz frame, the classical spacetime frame vectors e^{\mu} appear instead of the {\gamma}^{\mu} matrices. Axial frame vectors (without cross product) of the 3D orientation space defining spin and rotations appear instead of the Pauli matrices; polar frame vectors of the 3D position space naturally define boosts, etc. Not the least, the formalism shows a significantly higher computational efficiency compared to matrices.

Massless Dirac equation on spinor bundles over real hyperbolic spaces

Abstract:We prove a sharp-in-time dispersive estimate of the Dirac equation on spinor bundles over the real hyperbolic space. Compared with the Euclidean counterparts, our result shows that the dispersive estimate differs between short and long times, reflecting the intuitive influence of negative curvature on the dispersion. Moreover, the well-known equivalence between dispersive estimates for Dirac and wave propagators in the Euclidean setting no longer holds in this context. This finding suggests that spinor fields are affected by the geometry at infinity of the manifold. As a key application, we establish an improved global-in-time Strichartz estimate, in the sense that there is no loss of angular derivatives and the admissible set is larger than previously known results in other settings.

Abstract:Using the nonrelativistic approximation in the curved-space Dirac equation, the analog of the Pauli equation is derived for a weak gravitational field with a gauge fixing condition related to the synchronous gauge, in the presence of an electromagnetic field. Different from the previous works which were employing either the exact or conventional Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations, here we perform calculations by directly performing nonrelativistic approximation which reduced in the power series expansion in the inverse mass of the spinning particle. On top of that, the equations of motion for the massive spin-$1/2$ charged particle are obtained. The two particular cases of the previously explored backgrounds, namely a) plane gravitational wave and b) homogeneous static gravitational field are considered for control. In the case a) we meet correspondence with the previous results. On the other hand, in case b), there is no correspondence with neither perturbative nor with exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations, which we also recalculate and agree with the previous works. The disagreement is a kind of a theoretical challenge and most likely occurs because the potential energy, in the particular case of Newtonian approximation, is proportional to the mass of the particle.

Negative-energy and tachyonic solutions in the Weinberg-Tucker-Hammer equation for spin 1

Abstract:We considered Weinberg-like equations in the article [1] in order to construct the Feynman-Dyson propagator for the spin-1 particles. This construction is based on the concept of the Weinberg field as a system of four field functions differing by parity and by dual transformations. We also analyzed the recent controversy in the definitions of the Feynman-Dyson propagator for the field operator containing the S=1/2 self/anti-self charge conjugate states in the papers by D. Ahluwalia et al and by W. Rodrigues Jr. et al. The solution to this mathematical controversy is obvious. I proposed the necessary doubling of the Fock Space (as in the Barut and Ziino works), thus extending the corresponding Clifford Algebra. Meanwhile, the N. Debergh et al article considered our old ideas of doubling the Dirac equation, and other forms of T- and PT-conjugation [5]. Both algebraic equation Det (\hat p - m) =0 and Det (\hat p + m) =0 for u- and v- 4-spinors have solutions with p_0= \pm E_p =\pm \sqrt{{\bf p}^2 +m^2}. The same is true for higher-spin equations (or they may even have more complicated dispersion relations). Meanwhile, every book considers the equality p_0=E_p for both u- and v- spinors of the (1/2,0)\oplus (0,1/2)) representation only, thus applying the Dirac-Feynman-Stueckelberg procedure for elimination of negative-energy solutions. It seems, that it is imposible to consider the relativistic quantum mechanics appropriately without negative energies, tachyons and appropriate forms of the discrete symmetries.

Abstract:Maxwell's equations and the Dirac equation are the first-order differential relativistic wave equation for electromagnetic waves and electronic waves respectively. Hence, there is a notable similarity between these two wave equations, which has been widely researched since the Dirac equation was proposed. In this paper, we show that the Maxwell equations can be written in an exact form of the Dirac equation by representing the four Dirac operators with 8 × 8 matrices. Unlike the ordinary 4 × 4 Dirac equation, both spin–1/2 and spin–1 operators can be derived from the 8 × 8 Dirac equation, manifesting that the 8 × 8 Dirac equation is able to describe both electrons and photons. As a result of the restrictions that the electromagnetic wave is a transverse wave, the photon is a spin–1 particle. The four–current in the Maxwell equations and the mass in the electronic Dirac equation also force the electromagnetic field to transform differently to the electronic field. We use this 8 × 8 representation to find that the Zitterbewegung of the photon is actually the oscillatory part of the Poynting vector, often neglected upon time averaging.

Abstract:By viewing the electron as a wavepacket in the positive energy spectrum of the Dirac equation, we are able to achieve a much clearer understanding of its behavior under weak electromagnetic fields. The intrinsic spin magnetic moment is found to be established from the self-rotation of the wavepacket. A non-canonical structure is also exhibited in the equations of motion due to non- Abelian geometric phases of the Dirac spinors. The wavepacket energy can be expressed simply in terms of the kinetic, electrostatic, and Zeeman terms only. This can be transformed into an effective quantum Hamiltonian by a novel scheme, and reproduces the Pauli Hamiltonian with all-order relativistic corrections.
