Abstract:The well-known Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff theorem in Lie theory says that the logarithm of a noncommutative product e X e Y can be expressed in terms of iterated commutators of X and Y. This paper provides a gentle introduction t{ó} Ecalle's mould calculus and shows how it allows for a short proof of the above result, together with the classical Dynkin explicit formula [Dy47] for the logarithm, as well as another formula recently obtained by T. Kimura [Ki17] for the product of exponentials itself. We also analyse the relation between the two formulas and indicate their mould calculus generalization to a product of more exponentials.

Abstract:Leveraging techniques from the literature on geometric numerical integration, we propose a new general method to compute exact expressions for the BCH formula. In its utmost generality, the method consists in embedding the Lie algebra of interest into a subalgebra of the algebra of vector fields on some manifold by means of an isomorphism, so that the BCH formula for two elements of the original algebra can be recovered from the composition of the flows of the corresponding vector fields. For this reason we call our method the flow method. Clearly, this method has great advantage in cases where the flows can be computed analytically. We illustrate its usefulness on some benchmark examples where it can be applied directly, and discuss some possible extensions for cases where an exact expression cannot be obtained.

Abstract:The exponential of an operator or matrix is widely used in quantum theory, but it sometimes can be a challenge to evaluate. For non-commutative operators ${\bf X}$ and ${\bf Y}$, according to the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff-Dynkin theorem, ${\rm e}^{{\bf X}+{\bf Y}}$ is not equivalent to ${\rm e}^{\bf X}{\rm e}^{\bf Y}$, but is instead given by the well-known infinite series formula. For a Lie algebra of a basis of three operators $\{{\bf X,Y,Z}\}$, such that $[{\bf X}, {\bf Y}] = \kappa{\bf Z}$ for scalar $\kappa$ and cyclic permutations, here it is proven that ${\rm e}^{a{\bf X}+b{\bf Y}}$ is equivalent to ${\rm e}^{p{\bf Z}}{\rm e}^{q{\bf X}}{\rm e}^{-p{\bf Z}}$ for scalar $p$ and $q$. Extensions for ${\rm e}^{a{\bf X}+b{\bf Y}+c{\bf Z}}$ are also provided. This method is useful for the dynamics of atomic and molecular nuclear and electronic spins in constant and oscillatory transverse magnetic and electric fields.

In conclusion, by means of the logarithmic representation of generally-unbounded operators, the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff formula is generalized to be applicable to the unbounded operators.

Abstract:In a recent paper the author derived a formula for calculating common denominators for the homogeneous components of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) series. In the present work it is proved that this formula actually yields the smallest such common denominators. In an appendix a new efficient algorithm for computing coefficients of the BCH series is presented, which is based on these common denominators, and requires only integer arithmetic rather than less efficient rational arithmetic.

Abstract:We provide a technique to obtain explicit bounds for problems that can be reduced to linear forms in three complex logarithms of algebraic numbers. This technique can produce bounds significantly better than general results on lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms. We give worked examples to demonstrate both the use of our technique and the improvements it provides. Publicly shared code is also available.

Closed Form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formula for the Generators of Semisimple Complex Lie Algebras

Abstract:Recently it has been introduced an algorithm Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, which extends the Van-Brunt and Visser recent results, leading to new closed forms of BCH formula. More recently, it has been shown that there are {\it 13 types} of such commutator algebras. We show, by providing the explicit solutions, that these include the generators of the semisimple complex Lie algebras. More precisely, for any pair, $X$, $Y$ of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y)=\exp(W) $$ The derivation of such closed forms follows, in part, by using the above mentioned recent results. The complete derivation is provided by considering the structure of of the root system. Furthermore, if $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ are three generators of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find, for a wide class of cases, $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$ and $Z$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y) \exp(Z)=\exp(W) $$ It turns out that the relevant commutator algebras are {\it type 1c-i}, {\it type 4} and {\it type 5}. A key result concerns an iterative application of the algorithm leading to relevant extensions of the cases admitting closed forms of the BCH formula. Here we provide the main steps of such an iteration that will be developed in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we recall Lepowsky's and Wakimoto's product character formulas formulated in a new way by using arrays of specialized weighted crystals of negative roots for affine Lie algebras of type $C_l^{(1)}$, $D_{l+1}^{(2)}$ and $A_{2l}^{(2)}$. Lepowsky-Wakimoto's infinite periodic products appear as one side of (conjectured) Rogers-Ramanujan-type combinatorial identities for affine Lie algebras of type $C_l^{(1)}$.

A Lie algebraic pattern behind logarithmic CFTs

Abstract:We introduce a new concept named shift system. This is a purely Lie algebraic setting to develop the geometric representation theory of Feigin-Tipunin construction of logarithmic conformal field theories. After reformulating the discussion in the second author's past works under this new setting, as an application, we extend almost all the main results of these works to the (multiplet) principal W-algebra at positive integer level associated with a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2n)$, respectively. This paper also contains an appendix by Myungbo Shim on the relationship between Feigin-Tipunin construction and recent quantum field theories.

Abstract:In an arbitrary complete differential graded Lie algebra, we construct a group operation $\bullet$ on $L_1$ such that the differential of the product of two elements is the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff product of their differentials, i.e., $d(x\bullet y)=dx\ast dy$. We study some properties of this new structure and some applications, especially in homotopy theory, where this operation can be used to construct a Lie model for the 4-simplex. In particular, this solves, in dimension 4, a problem proposed by Lawrence and Sullivan.

Haglund-Haiman-Loehr Type Formulas for Hall-Littlewood Polynomials of Type B and C

Abstract:In previous work we showed that two apparently unrelated formulas for the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type A are, in fact, closely related. The first is the tableau formula obtained by specializing q=0 in the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second is the type $A$ instance of Schwer's formula (rephrased and rederived by Ram) for Hall-Littlewood polynomials of arbitrary finite type; Schwer's formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, which originate in the work of Gaussent-Littelmann and of the author with Postnikov on discrete counterparts to the Littelmann path model. We showed that the tableau formula follows by "compressing" Ram's version of Schwer's formula. In this paper, we derive tableau formulas for the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type B and C by compressing the corresponding instances of Schwer's formula.

Hyperbolic CORDIC-Based Architecture for Computing Logarithm and Its Implementation

Abstract:We present a CORDIC (Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer)-based method to compute the logarithm function with base 2 and validate this method by software simulation and hardware implementation. Technically, we overcome the limitation of traditional hyperbolic CORDIC and transform it based on the idea of generalized hyperbolic CORDIC so that it can be used to compute $log_{2}x\;(x\;\epsilon \;[1,2))$ . The proposed method requires only simple shift-and-add operations and has a great tradeoff between precision (or speed) and area. In MATLAB, we provide different precisions corresponding to the iterations of the transformed CORDIC for user needs. Using a pipelined structure and setting the number of iterations to be 16 (the average relative error is $2.09\times 10<^>{-6}$ ), we implement an example hardware circuit. Synthesized under the SMIC 65nm CMOS technology, the circuit has an area of 24100 $\mu m<^>{2}$ and computation time of 11.1 ns, which can save 31.04x0025; area and improve 6.92x0025; computation speed averagely compared with existing methods.

Abstract:This paper finds relationships between multiple logarithms with a dihedral group action on the arguments. I generalize the combinatorics developed in Gangl, Goncharov and Levin's R-deco polygon representation of multiple logarithms to find these relations. By writing multiple logarithms as iterated integrals, my arguments are valid for iterated integrals as over an arbitrary field.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{U}$ be a braided tensor category, typically unknown, complicated and in particular non-semisimple. We characterize $\mathcal{U}$ under the assumption that there exists a commutative algebra $A$ in $\mathcal{U}$ with certain properties: Let $\mathcal{C}$ be the category of local $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ the category of $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$, which are in our set-up usually much simpler categories than $\mathcal{U}$. Then we can characterize $\mathcal{U}$ as a relative Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}_\mathcal{C}(\mathcal{B})$ and $\mathcal{B}$ as representations of a certain Hopf algebra inside $\mathcal{C}$. In particular this allows us to reduce braided tensor equivalences to the knowledge of abelian equivalences, e.g. if we already know that $\mathcal{U}$ is abelian equivalent to the category of modules of some quantum group $U_q$ or some generalization thereof, and if $\mathcal{C}$ is braided equivalent to a category of graded vector spaces, and if $A$ has a certain form, then we already obtain a braided tensor equivalence between $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathrm{Rep}(U_q)$. A main application of our theory is to prove logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondences, that is, equivalences of braided tensor categories of representations of vertex algebras and of quantum groups. Here, the algebra $A$ and the corresponding category $\mathcal{C}$ are a-priori given by a free-field realization of the vertex algebra and by a Nichols algebra. We illustrate this in those examples where the representation theory of the vertex algebra is well enough understood. In particular we prove the conjectured correspondences between the singlet vertex algebra $\mathcal{M}(p)$ and the unrolled small quantum groups of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at $2p$-th root of unity. Another new example is the Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence for $\mathfrak{gl}_{1|1}$.

Abstract:This paper proposes a low-complexity method and architecture to compute the logarithm of complex numbers based on coordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC). Our method takes advantage of the vector mode of circular CORDIC and hyperbolic CORDIC, which only needs shift-add operations in its hardware implementation. Our architecture has lower design complexity and higher performance compared with conventional architectures. Through software simulation, we show that this method can achieve high precision for logarithm computation, reaching the relative error of 10(-7). Finally, we design and implement an example circuit under TSMC 28nm CMOS technology. According to the synthesis report, our architecture has smaller area, lower power consumption, higher precision and wider operation range compared with the alternative architectures.

Abstract:One of the natural ways to prove that the Hall words (Philip Hall, 1933) consist of a basis of a free Lie algebra is a direct construction: to start with a linear space spanned by Hall words, to define the Lie product of Hall words, and then to check that the product yields the Lie identities (Marshall Hall, 1950). Here we suggest another way using the Composition-Diamond lemma for free anti-commutative (non-associative) algebras (A.I. Shirshov, 1962).

Abstract:Suppose that A and B are two positive-definite matrices, then, the limit of (Ap/2BpAp/2)1/p as p tends to 0 can be obtained by the well known Lie-Trotter formula. In this article, we generalize the usual product of matrices to the Hadamard product denoted as * which is commutative, and obtain the explicit formula of the limit (Ap * Bp)1/p as p tends to 0. Furthermore, the existence of the limit of (Ap * Bp)1/p as p tends to +∞ is proved.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive two versions of divided difference form of the Lagrange–Bürmann expansion formula. The first version expresses all coefficients by a form of a determinant. By means of the factorizations of the generalized Leibniz functional matrices with respect to a sequence, we obtain the second version with coefficients represented by a finite sum. Some new matrix inversions are also investigated.

Abstract:In the present paper the researches initiated in the two earlier papers of this series are continued, and, by suitable generalizations of the techniques employed therein, solutions are obtained to some further well known problems from the theory of transcendental numbers. It will be proved, for example, that a non-vanishing linear form, with algebraic coefficients, in the logarithms of algebraic numbers, cannot be algebraic. This implies, in particular, that π + log α is transcendental for any algebraic number α ≠ 0, and also eα π+ß is transcendental for all algebraic numbers α, β with β ≠ 0.
