Abstract:The purpose of the study was to examine whether selected socioeconomic, demographic and spatial characteristics of residential neighborhoods and crime rates in these areas are in any way related to each other and the nature of their relationship. In addition, the study attempts to explain what influences the results of the aforementioned analyses. The study was performed for the city of Wrocław (Poland) in relation to its residential neighborhoods. The study used the principal component method supported by classical correlation analysis for traits with relative values. A total of 43 characteristics and their relationship to crime were examined. Among the features studied were data relating to economics, land use and demographics structure. It was shown that the level of crime in the residential neighborhoods of a large city is related to the urban fabric of high-density housing and the concentration of economic entities, especially services. It was also observed that the nature of the unit of observation adopted and the nature of the statistical characteristics taken for the study have a strong influence on the results obtained. To a lesser extent, the result of the conducted analyses was influenced by the way in which the characteristics (structure, density) were relativized.
