Abstract:We study N-cluster correlation functions in four- and five-dimensional (4D and 5D) bond percolation by extensive Monte Carlo simulation. We reformulate the transfer Monte Carlo algorithm for percolation [Phys. Rev. E72, 016126 (2005)] using the disjoint-set data structure, and simulate a cylindrical geometry Ld−1 × ∞, with the linear size up to L = 512 for 4D and 128 for 5D. We determine with a high precision all possible N-cluster exponents, for N = 2 and 3, and the universal amplitude for a logarithmic correlation function. From the symmetric correlator with N=2, we obtain the correlation-length critical exponent as 1/ν=1.4610(12) for 4D and 1/ν=1.737(2) for 5D, significantly improving over the existing results. Estimates for the other exponents and the universal logarithmic amplitude have not been reported before to our knowledge. Our work demonstrates the validity of logarithmic conformal field theory and adds to the growing knowledge for high-dimensional percolation.
Observation of nonscalar and logarithmic correlations in two- and three-dimensional percolation

Conformally covariant probabilities, operator product expansions, and logarithmic correlations in two-dimensional critical percolation

Abstract:The large-scale behavior of two-dimensional critical percolation is expected to be described by a conformal field theory (CFT). Moreover, this putative percolation CFT is believed to be of the logarithmic type, exhibiting logarithmic corrections to the most commonly encountered and studied behavior of CFT correlations. It was recently shown by the first author [Cam24] that critical connection probabilities, when appropriately rescaled, have a well-defined and conformally covariant scaling limit and therefore behave like CFT correlation functions. While constructing a full-fledged percolation CFT is still an open problem, in this paper we prove various CFT features of the scaling limit of two-dimensional critical percolation. We identify several connectivity events, including arm-events and the events that a vertex is pivotal or belongs to the percolation backbone, whose probabilities have conformally covariant scaling limits and can be interpreted as CFT correlation functions. For some of the probabilities mentioned above, we prove asymptotic expansions that can be interpreted as CFT operator product expansions (OPEs) and provide rigorous versions of CFT fusion rules. In some of the probabilities mentioned above, we identify logarithmic singularities, providing the first rigorous confirmation of similar predictions made in the physics literature and establishing the logarithmic nature of the putative percolation CFT. The latter result is particularly interesting because, while logarithmic CFTs are more complex and less studied than ordinary CFTs, they have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their role in the analysis of important physical models and phenomena, such as, besides percolation, the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model, the quantum Hall effect, disordered critical systems, self-avoiding polymers, and the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) model.

Abstract:Although well described by mean-field theory in the thermodynamic limit, scaling has long been puzzling for finite systems in high dimensions. This raised questions about the efficacy of the renormalization group and foundational concepts such as universality, finite-size scaling and hyperscaling, until recently believed not to be applicable above the upper critical dimension. Significant theoretical progress has been made resolving these issues, and tested in numerous simulational studies of spin models. This progress rests upon superlinearity of correlation length, a notion that for a long time encountered resistance but is now broadly accepted. Percolation theory brings added complications such as proliferation of interpenetrating clusters in apparent conflict with suggestions coming from random-graph asymptotics and a dearth of reliable simulational guidance. Here we report on recent theoretical progress in percolation theory in the renormalization group framework in high dimensions that accommodates superlinear correlation and renders most of the above concepts mutually compatible under different boundary conditions. Results from numerical simulations for free and periodic boundary conditions which differentiate between previously competing theories are also presented. Although still fragmentary, these Monte Carlo results support the new framework which restores the renormalization group and foundational concepts on which it rests.

Critical exponents and universal excess cluster number of percolation in four and five dimensions

Abstract:We study critical bond percolation on periodic four-dimensional (4D) and five-dimensional (5D) hypercubes by Monte Carlo simulations. By classifying the occupied bonds into branches, junctions and non-bridges, we construct the whole, the leaf-free and the bridge-free clusters using the breadth-first search algorithm. From the geometric properties of these clusters, we determine a set of four critical exponents, including the thermal exponent y(t) = 1/nu, the fractal dimension d(f), the backbone exponent d(B) and the shortest-path exponent d(min). We also obtain an estimate of the excess cluster number b which is a universal quantity related to the finite-size scaling of the total number of clusters. The results are y(t) = 1.461(5), d(f) = 3.044 6(7), d(B) = 1.984 4(11), d(min) = 1.604 2(5), b = 0.62(1) for 4D; and y(t) = 1.743(10), d(f) = 3.526 0(14), d(B) = 2.022 6(27), d(min) = 1.813 7(16), b = 0.62(2) for 5D. The values of the critical exponents are compatible with or improving over the existing estimates, and those of the excess cluster number b have not been reported before. Together with the existing values in other spatial dimensions d, the d-dependent behavior of the critical exponents is obtained, and a local maximum of d(B) is observed near d approximate to 5. It is suggested that, as expected, critical percolation clusters become more and more dendritic as d increases. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Logarithmic correlation functions in 2D critical percolation

Abstract:It is believed that the large-scale geometric properties of two-dimensional critical percolation are described by a logarithmic conformal field theory, but it has been challenging to exhibit concrete examples of logarithmic singularities and to find an explanation and a physical interpretation, in terms of lattice observables, for their appearance. We show that certain percolation correlation functions receive independent contributions from a large number of similar connectivity events happening at different scales. Combined with scale invariance, this leads to logarithmic divergences. We study several logarithmic correlation functions for critical percolation in the bulk and in the presence of a boundary, including the four-point function of the density (spin) field. Our analysis confirms previous findings, provides new explicit calculations and explains, in terms of lattice observables, the physical mechanism that leads to the logarithmic singularities we discover. Although we adopt conformal field theory (CFT) terminology to present our results, the core of our analysis relies on probabilistic arguments and recent rigorous results on the scaling limit of critical percolation and does not assume a priori the existence of a percolation CFT. As a consequence, our results provide strong support for the validity of a CFT description of critical percolation and a step in the direction of a mathematically rigorous formulation of a logarithmic CFT of two-dimensional critical percolation.

Universality classes for percolation models with long-range correlations

Abstract:We consider a class of percolation models where the local occupation variables have long-range correlations decaying as a power law $\sim r^{-a}$ at large distances $r$, for some $0< a< d$ where $d$ is the underlying spatial dimension. For several of these models, we present both, rigorous analytical results and matching simulations that determine the critical exponents characterizing the fixed point associated to their phase transition, which is of second order. The exact values we obtain are rational functions of the two parameters $a$ and $d$ alone, and do not depend on the specifics of the model.

Abstract:In statistical physics, if we successively divide an equilibrium system into two parts, we will face a situation that, within a certain length $\xi$, the physics of a subsystem is no longer the same as the original system. Then the extensive properties of the thermal entropy $S($AB$)= S($A$)+S($B$)$ is violated. This observation motivates us to introduce the concept of correlation entropy between two points, as measured by mutual information in the information theory, to study the critical phenomena. A rigorous relation is established to display some drastic features of the non-vanishing correlation entropy of the subsystem formed by any two distant particles with long-range correlation. This relation actually indicates the universal role of the correlation entropy in understanding critical phenomena. We also verify these analytical studies in terms of two well-studied models for both the thermal and quantum phase transitions: two-dimensional Ising model and one-dimensional transverse field Ising model. Therefore, the correlation entropy provides us with a new physical intuition in critical phenomena from the point of view of the information theory.
A non-isomorphic decomposition analysis of percolation, correlated systems, and renormalization groups

Abstract: Any system with internal correlations (e.g., interactions), such as spin glasses, random media, and brains, can be studied as a network where nodes are elements and edges denote correlated interactions. As internal correlations increase, correlated behaviours originate and propagate among elements to create percolation phenomena. In this work, we study percolation in correlated systems by proposing a framework referred to as the non-isomorphic decomposition analysis. This framework analyzes the evolution of the space of non-isomorphic percolation configuration classes governed by internal correlations, where a metric called as the automorphism entropy is proposed to measure the reduction of information (i.e., freedom degrees) in the space. A special case of our theory under the mean-field approximation is elaborated, where all concepts can be explicitly calculated based on group theory and percolation theory. Our framework has been applied to studying absorbing phase transition, spreading process, and synchronization, whose results reveal the shared properties of percolation and dynamics in different correlated systems. First, the percolation process driven by internal correlations is intrinsically an information loss process in the probability space of non-isomorphic percolation configuration classes. The metric of information loss degree, automorphism entropy, serves as a sensitive indicator of percolation transition and related processes in diverse systems. Second, the information loss intensity depends on the strength of internal correlations. Sufficiently strong correlations ensure slight information losses and make specific freedom degrees omissible, which supports the implementation of renormalization groups. Sufficiently weak correlations, on the contrary, imply significant information losses and make renormalization groups less effective for the correlated system.
History-dependent Percolation in Two Dimensions.

Abstract:We study the history-dependent percolation in two dimensions, which evolves in generations from standard bond-percolation configurations through iteratively removing occupied bonds. Extensive simulations are performed for various generations on periodic square lattices up to side length L=4096. From finite-size scaling, we find that the model undergoes a continuous phase transition, which, for any finite number of generations, falls into the universality of standard two-dimensional (2D) percolation. At the limit of infinite generation, we determine the correlation-length exponent 1/ν=0.828(5) and the fractal dimension d_{f}=1.8644(7), which are not equal to 1/ν=3/4 and d_{f}=91/48 for 2D percolation. Hence, the transition in the infinite-generation limit falls outside the standard percolation universality and differs from the discontinuous transition of history-dependent percolation on random networks. Further, a crossover phenomenon is observed between the two universalities in infinite and finite generations.

Abstract:We consider the effects of spatial correlations in a two-dimensional site percolation model. By generalizing the Newman-Ziff Monte Carlo algorithm to include spatial correlations, percolation thresholds and fractal dimensions of percolation clusters are obtained. For a wide range of spatial correlations, the percolation threshold differs little from the uncorrelated result. In contrast, the fractal dimension differs sharply from the uncorrelated result for almost all types of correlation studied. We interpret these results in the framework of long-range correlated percolation.

Abstract:We develop an algorithm for generating long-range correlations in the percolation problem and investigate their effect on both structural and dynamical properties of the incipient infinite cluster in two dimensions. We find that the fractal dimensions of the backbone and the red bonds (singly connected bonds) are quite different from uncorrelated percolation and vary with λ, the strength of the correlation. Also, we find that the conductivity exponent varies with λ.

Abstract:The number of clusters per site $n(p)$ in percolation at the critical point $p = p_c$ is not itself a universal quantity---it depends upon the lattice and percolation type (site or bond). However, many of its properties, including finite-size corrections, scaling behavior with $p$, and amplitude ratios, show various degrees of universal behavior. Some of these are universal in the sense that the behavior depends upon the shape of the system, but not lattice type. Here, we elucidate the various levels of universality for elements of $n(p)$ both theoretically and by carrying out extensive studies on several two- and three-dimensional systems, by high-order series analysis, Monte-Carlo simulation, and exact enumeration. We find many new results, including precise values for $n(p_c)$ for several systems, a clear demonstration of the singularity in $n''(p)$, and metric scale factors. We make use of the matching polynomial of Sykes and Essam to find exact relations between properties for lattices and matching lattices. We propose a criterion for an absolute metric factor $b$ based upon the singular behavior of the scaling function, rather than a relative definition of the metric that has previously been used.

Abstract:By use of conformal field theory, we discover several exact factorizations of higher-order density correlation functions in critical two-dimensional percolation. Our formulas are valid in the upper half-plane, or any conformally equivalent region. We find excellent agreement of our results with high-precision computer simulations. There are indications that our formulas hold more generally.

Abstract:We combine percolation theory and Monte Carlo simulation to study in two dimensions the connectivity of an equilibrium lattice model of interacting Janus disks which self-assemble into an orientationally ordered stripe phase at low temperature. As the patch size is increased or the temperature is lowered, clusters of patch-connected disks grow, and a percolating cluster emerges at a threshold. In the stripe phase, the critical clusters extend longer in the direction parallel to the stripes than in the perpendicular direction, and percolation is thus anisotropic. It is found that the critical behavior of percolation in the Janus system is consistent with that of standard isotropic percolation, when an appropriate spatial rescaling is made. The rescaling procedure can be applied to understand other anisotropic systems, such as the percolation of aligned rigid rods and of the $q$-state Potts model with anisotropic interactions.
Universal Correlations as Fingerprints of Transverse Quantum Fluids

Abstract:We study universal off-diagonal correlations in transverse quantum fluids (TQF) -- a new class of quasi-one-dimensional superfluids featuring long-range-ordered ground states. These exhibit unique self-similar space-time relations scaling with $x^2/D\tau$ that serve as fingerprints of the specific states. The results obtained with the effective field theory are found to be in perfect agreement with {\it ab initio} simulations of hard-core bosons on a lattice -- a simple microscopic realization of TQF. This allows an accurate determination -- at nonzero temperature and finite system size -- of such key ground-state properties as the condensate and superfluid densities, and characteristic parameter $D$.

Universality of closed nested paths in two-dimensional percolation

Abstract:Recent work on percolation in $d=2$ [J. Phys. A {\bf 55} 204002] introduced an operator that gives a weight $k^{\ell}$ to configurations with $\ell$ `nested paths' (NP), i.e. disjoint cycles surrounding the origin, if there exists a cluster that percolates to the boundary of a disc of radius $L$, and weight zero otherwise. It was found that ${\rm E}(k^{\ell}) \sim L^{-X_{\rm NP}(k)}$, and a formula for $X_{\rm NP}(k)$ was conjectured. Here we derive an exact result for $X_{\rm NP}(k)$, valid for $k \ge -1$, replacing the previous conjecture. We find that the probability distribution ${\rm P}_\ell (L)$ scales as $ L^{-1/4} (\ln L)^\ell [(1/\ell!) \Lambda^\ell]$ when $\ell \geq 0$ and $L \gg 1$, with $\Lambda = 1/\sqrt{3} \pi$. Extensive simulations for various critical percolation models confirm our theoretical predictions and support the universality of the NP observables.

Universal Scaling of Gap Dynamics in Percolation

Abstract:Percolation is a cornerstone concept in physics, providing crucial insights into critical phenomena and phase transitions. In this study, we adopt a kinetic perspective to reveal the scaling behaviors of higher-order gaps in the largest cluster across various percolation models, spanning from latticebased to network systems, encompassing both continuous and discontinuous percolation. Our results uncover an inherent self-similarity in the dynamical process both for critical and supercritical phase, characterized by two independent Fisher exponents, respectively. Utilizing a scaling ansatz, we propose a novel scaling relation that links the discovered Fisher exponents with other known critical exponents. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of our theory to real systems, showing its practical utility in extracting the corresponding Fisher exponents. These findings enrich our understanding of percolation dynamics and highlight the robust and universal scaling laws that transcend individual models and extend to broader classes of complex systems.
