Abstract:We present a review of the chaotic hypothesis and discuss its applications to intermittency in statistical mechanics and fluid mechanics proposing a quantitative definition. Entropy creation rate is interpreted in terms of certain intermittency phenomena. An attempt to a theory of the experiment of Ciliberto-Laroche on the fluctuation law is presented.

Abstract:An overview is given of recent advances in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics about the statistics of random paths and current fluctuations. Although statistics is carried out in space for equilibrium statistical mechanics, statistics is considered in time or spacetime for nonequilibrium systems. In this approach, relationships have been established between nonequilibrium properties such as the transport coefficients, the thermodynamic entropy production, or the affinities, and quantities characterizing the microscopic Hamiltonian dynamics and the chaos or fluctuations it may generate. This overview presents results for classical systems in the escape-rate formalism, stochastic processes, and open quantum systems.

Abstract:In this paper,we mainly review the basic concepts in statistical mechanics of stochastic processes,including entropy production,flux,potential,equilibrium state,temperature in stochastic processes and their mathematical definitions.Moreover,we review some basic properties of the processes derived from these concepts,including fluctuation theorems,Green-Kubo formula,and the monotonicity of power spectrum density.Especially,we point out that we can introduce the temperature parameter in a Markov process to get the multi-layer clustering of the system modeled by the process.This multi-layer clustering shows the interaction network structure among the states.Finally,we give some examples of application problems,in which one can model by stochastic processes to get the answer,explanation,and understanding of concerned problems in natural sciences.

Abstract:A variety of astronomical phenomena appear to not satisfy the ergodic hypothesis in the relevant stationary state, if any. As such, there is no reason for expecting the applicability of Boltzmann–Gibbs (BG) statistical mechanics. Some of these phenomena appear to follow, instead, nonextensive statistical mechanics. In the same manner that the BG formalism is based on the entropy SBG=−k∑ipi ln pi, the nonextensive one is based on the form Sq=k(1 −∑ipiq)/(q− 1) (with S1=SBG). The stationary states of the former are characterized by an exponential dependence on the energy, whereas those of the latter are characterized by an (asymptotic) power law. A brief review of this theory is given here, as well as of some of its applications, such as the solar neutrino problem, polytropic self-gravitating systems, galactic peculiar velocities, cosmic rays and some cosmological aspects. In addition to these, an analogy with the Keplerian elliptic orbits versus the Ptolemaic epicycles is developed, where we show that optimizing Sq with a few constraints is equivalent to optimizing SBG with an infinite number of constraints.

Dynamical Instability and Statistical Behaviour of N-Body Systems

Abstract:We here describe the possibility of a synthetic description of the onset of Chaos in many degrees of freedom dynamical systems within the framework of the geometric description of dynamics. We show how this approach to instability helps to single out the transition between different regimes of stochasticity in typical as well peculiar N-body systems. It is shown how intermingled are the relationships between geometric properties of the manifold and stability properties of the dynamics, which do not follow any naive prescription. The implications concerning the possibility of a Statistical description are also addressed, and it is shown how the peculiarities of the interaction potential reflect themselves also on the geometric description. In particular, it is found that for the gravitational N-body system the dynamics possess features very similar to those of stable and tempered many body dynamical systems in the regime of strong stochasticity. All these issues are addressed from a semi-analytical approach, checked using well tailored numerical simulations, which help also to reinterpret some results recently appeared, and to correct to some extent previous claims presented in the literature.

It is proposed, as an example, that stationary states of an incompressible fluid subject to a constant force, can be described via several ensembles, in strict analogy with equilibrium Statistcal Mechanics.

Abstract:We give a general review on the application of Ergodic theory to the investigation of dynamics of the Yang-Mills gauge fields and of the gravitational systems, as well as its application in the Monte Carlo method and fluid dynamics. In ergodic theory the maximally chaotic dynamical systems (MCDS) can be defined as dynamical systems that have nonzero Kolmogorov entropy. The hyperbolic dynamical systems that fulfil the Anosov C-condition belong to the MCDS insofar as they have exponential instability of their phase trajectories and positive Kolmogorov entropy. It follows that the C-condition defines a rich class of MCDS that span over an open set in the space of all dynamical systems. The large class of Anosov-Kolmogorov MCDS is realised on Riemannian manifolds of negative sectional curvatures and on high-dimensional tori. The interest in MCDS is rooted in the attempts to understand the relaxation phenomena, the foundations of the statistical mechanics, the appearance of turbulence in fluid dynamics, the non-linear dynamics of Yang-Mills field and gravitating N-body systems as well as black hole thermodynamics. Our aim is to investigate classical- and quantum-mechanical properties of MCDS and their role in the theory of fundamental interactions.

Abstract:Systems with a multistable energy landscape are widespread in physics, biophysics, technology, and materials science. They are strongly influenced by thermal fluctuations and external mechanical actions that can be applied at different rates, moving the system from equilibrium to non-equilibrium regimes. In this paper, we focus on a simple system involving a single breaking phenomenon to describe the various theoretical approaches used to study these problems. To begin with, we propose the exact solution at thermodynamic equilibrium based on the calculation of the partition function without approximations. We then introduce the technique of spin variables, which is able to simplify the treatment even for systems with a large number of coordinates. We then analyze the energy balance of the system to better understand its underlying physics. Finally, we introduce a technique based on transition state theory useful for studying the non-equilibrium dynamical regimes of these systems. This method is appropriate for the evaluation of rate effects and hysteresis loops. These approaches are developed for both the Helmholtz ensemble (prescribed extension) and the Gibbs ensemble (applied force) of statistical mechanics. The symmetry and duality of these two ensembles is discussed in depth. While these techniques are used here for a simple system with theoretical purposes, they can be applied to complex systems of interest for several physical, biophysical, and technological applications.

Abstract:We address the problem of the dynamical foundation of non-canonical equilibrium. We consider, as a source of divergence from ordinary statistical mechanics, the breakdown of the condition of time scale separation between microscopic and macroscopic dynamics. We show that this breakdown has the effect of producing a significant deviation from the canonical prescription. We also show that, while the canonical equilibrium can be reached with no apparent dependence on dynamics, the specific form of non-canonical equilibrium is, in fact, determined by dynamics. We consider the special case where the thermal reservoir driving the system of interest to equilibrium is a generator of intermittent fluctuations. We assess the form of the non-canonical equilibrium reached by the system in this case. Using both theoretical and numerical arguments we demonstrate that Levy statistics are the best description of the dynamics and that the Levy distribution is the correct basin of attraction. We also show that the correct path to non-canonical equilibrium by means of strictly thermodynamic arguments has not yet been found, and that further research has to be done to establish a connection between dynamics and thermodynamics.

Abstract:Stable chaos is a generalization of the chaotic behaviour exhibited by cellular automata to continuous-variable systems and it owes its name to an underlying irregular and yet linearly stable dynamics. In this review we discuss analogies and differences with the usual deterministic chaos and introduce several tools for its characterization. Some examples of transitions from ordered behavior to stable chaos are also analyzed to further clarify the underlying dynamical properties. Finally, two models are specifically discussed: the diatomic hard-point gas chain and a network of globally coupled neurons.

Abstract:This review gives a pedagogical introduction to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), its basis, and its implications to statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. In the first part, ETH is introduced as a natural extension of ideas from quantum chaos and random matrix theory (RMT). To this end, we present a brief overview of classical and quantum chaos, as well as RMT and some of its most important predictions. The latter include the statistics of energy levels, eigenstate components, and matrix elements of observables. Building on these, we introduce the ETH and show that it allows one to describe thermalization in isolated chaotic systems without invoking the notion of an external bath. We examine numerical evidence of eigenstate thermalization from studies of many-body lattice systems. We also introduce the concept of a quench as a means of taking isolated systems out of equilibrium, and discuss results of numerical experiments on quantum quenches. The second part of the review explores the implications of quantum chaos and ETH to thermodynamics. Basic thermodynamic relations are derived, including the second law of thermodynamics, the fundamental thermodynamic relation, fluctuation theorems, the fluctuation–dissipation relation, and the Einstein and Onsager relations. In particular, it is shown that quantum chaos allows one to prove these relations for individual Hamiltonian eigenstates and thus extend them to arbitrary stationary statistical ensembles. In some cases, it is possible to extend their regimes of applicability beyond the standard thermal equilibrium domain. We then show how one can use these relations to obtain nontrivial universal energy distributions in continuously driven systems. At the end of the review, we briefly discuss the relaxation dynamics and description after relaxation of integrable quantum systems, for which ETH is violated. We present results from numerical experiments and analytical studies of quantum quenches at integrability. We introduce the concept of the generalized Gibbs ensemble and discuss its connection with ideas of prethermalization in weakly interacting systems.

Abstract:The Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistical mechanics constitutes one of the pillars of contemporary theoretical physics. It is constructed upon the other pillars-classical, quantum, relativistic mechanics and Maxwell equations for electromagnetism-and its foundations are grounded on the optimization of the BG (additive) entropic functional [Formula: see text]. Its use in the realm of classical mechanics is legitimate for vast classes of nonlinear dynamical systems under the assumption that the maximal Lyapunov exponent is positive (currently referred to as strong chaos), and its validity has been experimentally verified in countless situations. It fails however when the maximal Lyapunov exponent vanishes (referred to as weak chaos), which is virtually always the case with complex natural, artificial and social systems. To overcome this type of weakness of the BG theory, a generalization was proposed in 1988 grounded on the non-additive entropic functional [Formula: see text]. The index [Formula: see text] and related ones are to be calculated, whenever mathematically tractable, from first principles and reflect the specific class of weak chaos. We review here the basics of this generalization and illustrate its validity with selected examples aiming to bridge natural and social sciences. Abstract:This paper gives a short review of the history of statistical physics starting from D. Bernoulli's kinetic theory of gases in the 18th century until the recent new developments in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the last decades of this century. The most important contributions of the great physicists Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann are sketched. It is shown how the reversibility and the recurrence paradox are resolved within Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of the second law of thermodynamics. An approach to classical and quantum statistical mechanics is outlined. Finally the progress in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the second half of this century is sketched starting from the work of N.N. Bogolyubov in 1946 up to the progress made recently in understanding the diffusion processes in dense fluids using computer simulations and analytical methods.

Abstract:s of the lectures Lai-Sang Young (Courant Institute, New York University) Nonequilibrium steady states for certain particle systems The topic of this talk lies on the interface between dynamical systems and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. I will begin by describing a family of mechanical models in which local environments at lattice sites are represented by rotating disks, and energy exchange among these disks are mediated by moving particles. Each system is coupled to unequal heat baths and forced out of equilibrium. Relevant questions on nonequilibrium steady states are reviewed. Answers to these questions are, unfortunately, out of reach at the present time for the models described. I will instead consider stochastic models designed to capture the essence of their dynamics, and present recent results for these Markovian systems. Sebastian Gouezel (Université de Rennes) Moment bounds for non-uniformly expanding maps The growth rate of moments of Birkho¤ sums is commonly used in physics to estimate specic parameters of dynamical systems. We give a theoretical justication to this process, in intermittent maps or more generally in Young towers: we get precise (matching) upper and lower bounds for this growth rate, in the whole range of parameters of interest, and deduce that the growth rate indeed encodes how non-uniform the expansion is. The methods involve precise dynamical estimates and martingale inequalities. Sebastian van Strien (Imperial College London) Stochastic stability of expanding circle maps with neutral xed point One of the best known dynamical systems with intermittency behaviour is the well-known Pomeau-Manneville circle map. This map has a neutral xed point at 0 which causes orbits to linger there for long periods. Nevertheless this map has always a physical measure: for 1 it is the Dirac measure at 0 while for 2 (0; 1) it is absolutely continuous. It was also known for quite a while that this map is stochastically stable when 1. In this talk I will discuss a result which implies that this map is also stochastic stable when 2 (0; 1). (Joint with Weixiao Shen) Viviane Baladi (Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris) Linear response for one-dimensional dynamical systems The transfer operators of piecewise expanding interval maps f have a spectral gap on BV, which implies in particular exponential mixing in the aperiodic case. For smooth one-parameter families of piecewise expanding maps ft, Gerhard Keller showed in 1982 that the L-norm of the invariant density t has a jt log jtjj modulus of continuity. With Smania, we proved in 2008 that this result is optimal. In particular, linear response fails. Smooth unimodal maps are nonuniformly expanding at best. In the good cases, their transfer operator also enjoys a spectral gap on a suitable Banach space (constructed e.g. via a Hofbauer-Keller or Young tower), which implies several nice properties, including an invariant density 2 L and exponential mixing. The same mechanism as for piecewise expanding maps leads to breakdown of linear response: We shall present recent work with Benedicks and Schnellmann on di¤erentiable unimodal maps with nondegenerate critical points. Our upper bounds for the modulus of continuity of the a.c.i.m. (restricting to large sets of parameters t enjoying slow enough postcritical recurrence) are of the form j t log jtj j. For the quadratic family, our result gives both upper bounds and (restricting to appropriate sequences) lower bounds of the form t for the modulus of continuity of the a.c.i.m. tdx. In the mathematical treatment di¤raction and the connection to dynamical systems has recieved ample attention. We provide a survey on this line of research. Domokos Szasz (Budapest University of Technology) The Rare Interaction Limit in a Fast-Slow Mechanical System Gaspard and Gilberts 2008 two-step strategy to derive the macroscopicheat equation from the microscopickinetic equation challenged many experts for its rigorous elaboration. The GG model consists of a chain of localized but interacting hard disks. For a 2-chain, our paradigm replaces one of the disks with a stick moving in an interval with reecting barriers and interacting rarely with the localized disk. For this model realizing the rst, truly dynamical part of the GG-strategy we obtain the mesoscopicmaster equation describing a Markov jump process for the energies of the particles. A byproduct of our arguments: the calculation of the transition kernel provides at the same time rigorous foundation for Boltzmanns microscopic chaos hypothesis. The results are joint with Péter Bálint, Péter Nándori and Imre Péter Tóth. Carlangelo Liverani (Università Roma Tor Vergata) Beyond averaging in fast-slow partially hyperbolic systems Averaging theory provides a description for the motion on a moderately long time scale in a wide class of fast-slow systems. Yet, it is natural to wonder if something can be said for arbitrarily long times. At the moment almost nothing is known and it is not clear if there is any hope to develop a fairly general theory. To try to get some insight on the situation I will describe one of the simplest (non trivial) possible examples. I will illustrate what can be proven with particular emphasis on new limit theorems for the slow variable.

Abstract:Although not as wide, and popular, as that of quantum mechanics, the investigation of fundamental aspects of statistical mechanics constitutes an important research field in the building of modern physics. Besides the interest for itself, both for physicists and philosophers, and the obvious pedagogical motivations, there is a further, compelling reason for a thorough understanding of the subject. The fast development of models and methods at the edge of the established domain of the field requires indeed a deep reflection on the essential aspects of the theory, which are at the basis of its success. These elements should never be disregarded when trying to expand the domain of statistical mechanics to systems with novel, little known features. It is thus important to (re)consider in a careful way the main ingredients involved in the foundations of statistical mechanics. Among those, a primary role is covered by the dynamical aspects (e.g. presence of chaos), the emergence of collective features for large systems, and the use of probability in the building of a consistent statistical description of physical systems. With this goal in mind, in the present review we aim at providing a consistent picture of the state of the art of the subject, both in the classical and in the quantum realm. In particular, we will highlight the similarities of the key technical and conceptual steps with emphasis on the relevance of the many degrees of freedom, to justify the use of statistical ensembles in the two domains.

Abstract:A Hamiltonian-based model of many harmonically interacting massive particles that are subject to linear friction and coupled to heat baths at different temperatures is used to study the dynamic approach to equilibrium and non-equilibrium stationary states. Based on the exactly calculated dynamic approach to the stationary distribution, the functional that governs this approach, which is called the free entropy, is constructed. For the stationary distribution the free entropy becomes maximal and its time derivative is minimal and vanishes. Thus, the free entropy characterizes equilibrium as well as non-equilibrium stationary distributions by their extremal and stability properties. For an equilibrium system, i.e. if all heat baths have the same temperature, the free entropy equals the negative free energy divided by temperature. Using a systematic perturbative scheme for calculating velocity and position correlations in the overdamped massless limit, explicit results for few particles are presented: For two particles localization in position and momentum space is demonstrated in the non-equilibrium stationary state, indicative of a tendency to phase separate. For three elastically interacting particles heat flows from a particle coupled to a cold reservoir to a particle coupled to a warm reservoir if the third reservoir is sufficiently hot. Active particle models can be described in the same general framework, which thereby allows to characterize their entropy production not only in the stationary state but also in the approach to the stationary non-equilibrium state. Finally, the connection to non-equilibrium thermodynamics formulations that include the reservoir entropy production is discussed.
