Abstract:We consider the problem of random uniform generation of traces (the elements of a free partially commutative monoid) in light of the uniform measure on the boundary at infinity of the associated monoid. We obtain a product decomposition of the uniform measure at infinity if the trace monoid has several irreducible components-a case where other notions such as Parry measures, are not defined. Random generation algorithms are then examined.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is the construction of a trace and a trace pairing for endomorphisms satisfying suitable conditions in a monoidal category. This construction is a common generalization of the trace for endomorphisms of dualizable ob jects in a balanced monoidal category and the trace of nuclear operators on a locally convex topological vector space with the approximation property.

Abstract:We propose a new class of traces motivated by a trace/trace class property discovered by Laurie, Nordgren, Radjavi and Rosenthal concerning products of operators outside the trace class. Spectral traces, traces that depend only on the spectrum and algebraic multiplicities, possess this property and we suspect others do, but we know of no other traces that do. This paper is intended to be part survey. We provide here a brief overview of some facts concerning traces on ideals, especially involving Lidskii formulas and spectral traces. We pose the central question: whenever the relevant products, $AB$, $BA$ lie in an ideal, do bounded operators $A$, $B$ always commute under any trace on that ideal, i.e.,$\tau(AB) = \tau(BA)$? And if not, characterize which traces/ideals do possess this property.

Abstract:Using Cuntz semigroup techniques, we characterize when limit traces are dense in the space of all traces on a free ultrapower of a C*-algebra. More generally, we consider density of limit quasitraces on ultraproducts of C*-algebras. Quite unexpectedly, we obtain as an application that every simple C*-algebra that is (m,n)-pure in the sense of Winter is already pure. As another application, we provide a partial verification of the first Blackadar-Handelman conjecture on dimension functions. Crucial ingredients in our proof are new Hahn-Banach type separation theorems for noncancellative cones, which in particular apply to the cone of extended-valued traces on a C*-algebra.

Abstract:We conduct a systematic study of traces on locally compact groups, in particular traces on their universal and reduced C*-algebras. We introduce the trace kernel, and examine its relation to the von Neumann kernel and to small-invariant neighbourhood (SIN) quotients. In doing so, we introduce the class of residually-$SIN$ groups, which contains both $SIN$ and maximally almost periodic groups. We examine in detail the trace kernel for connected groups. We study traces on reduced C*-algebras, giving a simple proof for compactly generated groups that existence of such a trace is equivalent to having an open normal amenable subgroup, and we display non-discrete groups admitting unique trace. We finish by examining amenable traces and the factorization property. We show for property (T) groups that amenable trace kernels coincide with von Neumann kernels. We show for totally disconnected groups that amenable trace separation implies the factorization property. We use amenable traces to give a simple proof that amenability of the group is equivalent to simultaneous nuclearity and possessing a trace of its reduced C*-algebra. As a final application of the results obtained in the paper, we address the embeddability of group C*-algebras into simple AF algebras. As a consequence, if a locally compact group is amenable and tracially separated (trace kernel is trivial), then its reduced C*-algebra is quasi-diagonal.

The Homology Groups of a Partial Trace Monoid Action

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the homology groups of mathematical models of concurrency. We study the Baues-Wirsching homology groups of a small category associated with a partial monoid action on a set. We prove that these groups can be reduced to the Leech homology groups of the monoid. For a trace monoid with an action on a set, we will build a cubical complex of free Abelian groups with homology groups isomorphic to the integral homology groups of the action category. It allows us to solve the problem posed by the author in 2004 of the constructing an algorithm for computing homology groups of the CE nets. We describe the algorithm and give examples of calculating the homology groups.

Abstract:We prove that the space of traces $\text{T}(A)$ of the unital full free product $A=A_1*A_2$ of two unital, separable $C^*$-algebras $A_1$ and $A_2$ is typically a Poulsen simplex, i.e., a simplex whose extreme points are dense. We deduce that $\text{T}(A)$ is a Poulsen simplex whenever $A_1$ and $A_2$ have no $1$-dimensional representations, e.g., if $A_1$ and $A_2$ are finite dimensional with no $1$-dimensional direct summands. Additionally, we characterize when the space of traces of a free product of two countable groups is a Poulsen simplex. Our main technical contribution is a new perturbation result for pairs of von Neumann subalgebras $(M_1,M_2)$ of a tracial von Neumann algebra $M$ which gives necessary conditions ensuring that $M_1$ and a small unitary perturbation of $M_2$ generate a II$_1$ factor.

Quantum traces for $SL_n$-skein algebras

Abstract:We establish the existence of several quantum trace maps. The simplest one is an algebra map between two quantizations of the algebra of regular functions on the $SL_n$-character variety of a surface $\mathfrak{S}$ equipped with an ideal triangulation $\lambda$. The first is the (stated) $SL_n$-skein algebra $\mathscr{S}(\mathfrak{S})$. The second $\overline{\mathcal{X}}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$ is the Fock and Goncharov's quantization of their $X$-moduli space. The quantum trace is an algebra homomorphism $\bar{tr}^X:\overline{\mathscr{S}}(\mathfrak{S})\to\overline{\mathcal{X}}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$ where the reduced skein algebra $\overline{\mathscr{S}}(\mathfrak{S})$ is a quotient of $\mathscr{S}(\mathfrak{S})$. When the quantum parameter is 1, the quantum trace $\bar{tr}^X$ coincides with the classical Fock-Goncharov homomorphism. This is a generalization of the Bonahon-Wong quantum trace map for the case $n=2$. We then define the extended Fock-Goncharov algebra $\mathcal{X}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$ and show that $\bar{tr}^X$ can be lifted to $tr^X:\mathscr{S}(\mathfrak{S})\to\mathcal{X}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$. We show that both $\bar{tr}^X$ and $tr^X$ are natural with respect to the change of triangulations. When each connected component of $\mathfrak{S}$ has non-empty boundary and no interior ideal point, we define a quantization of the Fock-Goncharov $A$-moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{A}}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$ and its extension $\mathcal{A}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$. We then show that there exist quantum traces $\bar{tr}^A:\overline{\mathscr{S}}(\mathfrak{S})\to\overline{\mathcal{A}}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$ and $tr^A:\mathscr{S}(\mathfrak{S})\hookrightarrow\mathcal{A}(\mathfrak{S},\lambda)$, where the second map is injective, while the first is injective at least when $\mathfrak{S}$ is a polygon. They are equivalent to the $X$-versions but have better algebraic properties.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid. We call a tracial state $\tau$ on a general groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C_\nu^*(\mathcal{G})$ canonical if $\tau=\tau|_{C_0(\mathcal{G}^{(0)})} \circ E$, where $E:C^*_\nu(\mathcal{G}) \to C_0(\mathcal{G}^{(0)})$ is the canonical conditional expectation. In this paper, we consider so-called fixed point traces on $C_c(\mathcal{G})$, and prove that $\mathcal{G}$ is essentially free if and only if any tracial state on $C_\nu^*(\mathcal{G})$ is canonical and any fixed point trace is extendable to $C_\nu^*(\mathcal{G})$.

Traced Monads and Hopf Monads

Abstract:A traced monad is a monad on a traced symmetric monoidal category that lifts the traced symmetric monoidal structure to its Eilenberg-Moore category. A long-standing question has been to provide a characterization of traced monads without explicitly mentioning the Eilenberg-Moore category. On the other hand, a symmetric Hopf monad is a symmetric bimonad whose fusion operators are invertible. For compact closed categories, symmetric Hopf monads are precisely the kind of monads that lift the compact closed structure to their Eilenberg-Moore categories. Since compact closed categories and traced symmetric monoidal categories are closely related, it is a natural question to ask what is the relationship between Hopf monads and traced monads. In this paper, we introduce trace-coherent Hopf monads on traced monoidal categories, which can be characterized without mentioning the Eilenberg-Moore category. The main theorem of this paper is that a symmetric Hopf monad is a traced monad if and only if it is a trace-coherent Hopf monad. We provide many examples of trace-coherent Hopf monads, such as those induced by cocommutative Hopf algebras or any symmetric Hopf monad on a compact closed category. We also explain how for traced Cartesian monoidal categories, trace-coherent Hopf monads can be expressed using the Conway operator, while for traced coCartesian monoidal categories, any trace-coherent Hopf monad is an idempotent monad. We also provide separating examples of traced monads that are not Hopf monads, as well as symmetric Hopf monads that are not trace-coherent.

Abstract:Given a finite tensor category , we prove that a modified trace on the tensor ideal of projective objects can be obtained from a suitable trivialization of the Nakayama functor as right -module functor. Using a result of Costello, this allows us to associate to any finite tensor category equipped with such a trivialization of the Nakayama functor a chain complex valued topological conformal field theory, the trace field theory . The trace field theory topologically describes the modified trace, the Hattori-Stallings trace, and also the structures induced by them on the Hochschild complex of . In this article, we focus on implications in the linear (as opposed to differential graded) setting: We use the trace field theory to define a non-unital homotopy commutative product on the Hochschild chains in degree zero. Abstract:We consider the tracial crossed product algebra M = A ⋊ Λ arising from a trace preserving action σ : Λ ↷ A of a discrete group Λ on a tracial von Neumann algebra A. For a unitary subgroup G ⊂ U ( M ) , we study when this G can be conjugated into U ( A ) ⋅ Λ in M. We provide a general sufficient condition for this to happen. Our result generalizes [14, Theorem 3.1] which treats the case when M is the group von Neumann algebra L ( Λ ) .

Abstract:Let $H_n(\boldsymbol{u})$ be the degenerate cyclotomic Hecke algebra with parameter $\boldsymbol{u}=(u_1, \ldots, u_m)$ over $\mathbb{C}(\boldsymbol{u})$. We define and construct the (non-)normalized Markov traces on the sequence $\{H_n(\boldsymbol{u})\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$. This allows us to provide a canonical symmetrizing form on $H_n(\boldsymbol{u})$ and show that the Brudan--Kleshchev trace on $H_n(\boldsymbol{u})$ is a specialization of the non-normalized Markov traces.

Abstract:Let Q be a quiver. M. Reineke and A. Hubery investigated the connection between the composition monoid, as introduced by M. Reineke, and the generic composition algebra, as introduced by C. M. Ringel, specialised at q=0. In this thesis we continue their work. We show that if Q is a Dynkin quiver or an oriented cycle, then the composition algebra at q=0 is isomorphic to the monoid algebra of the composition monoid. Moreover, if Q is an acyclic, extended Dynkin quiver, we show that there exists an epimorphism from the composition algebra at q=0 to the monoid algebra of the composition monoid, and we describe its non-trivial kernel. Our main tool is a geometric version of BGP reflection functors on quiver Grassmannians and quiver flags, that is varieties consisting of filtrations of a fixed representation by subrepresentations of fixed dimension vectors. These functors enable us to calculate various structure constants of the composition algebra. Moreover, we investigate geometric properties of quiver flags and quiver Grassmannians, and show that under certain conditions, quiver flags are irreducible and smooth. If, in addition, we have a counting polynomial, these properties imply the positivity of the Euler characteristic of the quiver flag.

On Kleisli liftings and decorated trace semantics

Abstract:It is well known that Kleisli categories provide a natural language to model side effects. For instance, in the theory of coalgebras, behavioural equivalence coincides with language equivalence (instead of bisimilarity) when nondeterministic automata are modelled as coalgebras living in the Kleisli category of the powerset monad. In this paper, our aim is to establish decorated trace semantics based on language and ready equivalences for conditional transition systems (CTSs) with/without upgrades. To this end, we model CTSs as coalgebras living in the Kleisli category of a relative monad. Our results are twofold. First, we reduce the problem of defining a Kleisli lifting for the machine endofunctor in the context of a relative monad to the classical notion of Kleisli lifting. Second, we provide a recipe based on indexed categories to construct a Kleisli lifting for general endofunctors.

Abstract:We introduce an algorithm for the uniform generation of infinite runs in concurrent systems under a partial order probabilistic semantics. We work with trace monoids as concurrency models. The algorithm outputs on-the-fly approximations of a theoretical infinite run, the latter being distributed according to the exact uniform probability measure. The average size of the approximation grows linearly with the time of execution of the algorithm. The execution of the algorithm only involves distributed computations, provided that some - costly - precomputations have been done.

On semidirect products of quantale enriched monoids

Abstract:We consider monoids equipped with a compatible quantale valued relation, to which we call quantale enriched monoids, and study semidirect products of such structures. It is well-known that semidirect products of monoids are closely related to Schreier split extensions which, in the setting of monoids, play the role of split extensions of groups. We will thus introduce certain split extensions of quantale enriched monoids, which generalize the classical Schreier split extensions of monoids, and investigate their connections with semidirect products. We then restrict our study to a class of quantale enriched monoids whose behavior mimics the fact that the preorder on a preordered group is completely determined by its cone of positive elements. Finally, we instantiate our results for preordered monoids and compare them with existing literature.

Trace methods for stable categories I: The linear approximation of algebraic K-theory

Abstract:We study algebraic K-theory and topological Hochschild homology in the setting of bimodules over a stable category, a datum we refer to as a laced category. We show that in this setting both K-theory and THH carry universal properties, the former defined in terms of additivity and the latter via trace invariance. We then use these universal properties in order to construct a trace map from laced K-theory to THH, and show that it exhibits THH as the first Goodwillie derivative of laced K-theory in the bimodule direction, generalizing the celebrated identification of stable K-theory by Dundas-McCarthy, a result which is the entryway to trace methods.
