Abstract:In this paper we study the regularity of closed, convex surfaces which achieve maximal affine area among all the closed, convex surfaces enclosed in a given domain in the Euclidean 3-space. We prove the C 1, α regularity for general domains and C 1,1 regularity if the domain is uniformly convex.

Abstract:In any closed smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, we use the min-max construction to find anisotropic minimal hyper-surfaces with respect to elliptic integrands, with a singular set of codimension~$2$ vanishing Hausdorff measure. In particular, in a closed $3$-manifold, we obtain a smooth anisotropic minimal surface. The critical step is to obtain a uniform upper bound for density ratios in the anisotropic min-max construction. This confirms a conjecture by Allard [Invent. Math., 1983].

Abstract:We find the precise range of ( p , q ) for which local averages along graphs of a class of two-variable polynomials in are of restricted weak type ( p , q ), with hypersurfaces equipped with Euclidean surface measure. We derive these results using non-oscillatory, geometric methods, for a model class of polynomials bearing a strong connection to the general real-analytic case.

Abstract:In this article, we study maximal functions related to hypersurfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Firstly, we characterize the $L^p\rightarrow L^q$ boundedness of local maximal operators along homogeneous hypersurfaces. Moreover, weighted $L^p$-estimates are obtained for the corresponding global operators. Secondly, for a class of hypersurfaces that lack a homogeneous structure and pass through the origin, we attempt to look for other geometric properties instead of height of hypersurfaces to characterize the optimal $L^p$-boundedness of the corresponding global maximal operators.

On Maximal Functions Associated to Families of Curves in the Plane

Abstract:We consider the $L^p$ mapping properties of maximal averages associated to families of curves, and thickened curves, in the plane. These include the (planar) Kakeya maximal function, the circular maximal functions of Wolff and Bourgain, and their multi-parameter analogues. We propose a framework that allows for a unified study of such maximal functions, and prove sharp $L^p\to L^p$ operator bounds in this setting. A key ingredient is an estimate from discretized incidence geometry that controls the number of higher order approximate tangencies spanned by a collection of plane curves. We discuss applications to the Fässler-Orponen restricted projection problem, and the dimension of Furstenberg-type sets associated to families of curves.

Abstract:For $n\geq 3$, let $\mathscr{M} \subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a compact hypersurface, parametrized by a homogeneous function of degree $d\in \mathbb{R}_{>1}$, with non-vanishing curvature away from the origin. Consider the number $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ of rationals $\mathbf{a}/q$, with denominator $q\in [Q,2Q)$ and $\mathbf{a} \in \mathbb{Z}^{n-1}$, lying at a distance at most $\delta/q$ from $\mathscr{M}$. This manuscript provides essentially sharp estimates for $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ throughout the range $\delta \in (Q^{\varepsilon-1},1/2)$ for $d>1+\tfrac{1}{2n-3}$. Our result is a first of its kind for hypersurfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature ($d>2$) and those which are rough (meaning not even $C^2$ at the origin which happens when $d<2$). An interesting outcome of our investigation is the understanding of a `geometric' term $(\delta/Q)^{(n-1)/d}Q^n$ (stemming from a so-called Knapp cap), arising in addition to the usual probabilistic term $\delta Q^n$; the sum of these terms determines the size of $\mathrm{N}_{\mathscr{M}}(\delta,Q)$ for $\delta\in(Q^{\varepsilon-1},1/2)$. Consequences of our result concern the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on `rough' hypersurfaces -- going beyond the recent break-through of Beresnevich and L. Yang. Further, we establish smooth extensions of Serre's dimension growth conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we estimate areas of compact minimal rotational hypersurfaces in the unit sphere. A sharper lower bound and upper bound on areas of these hypersurfaces are given. As applications, we confirm two conjectures, one in Perdomo and Wei (Nonlinear Anal 125:241–250, 2015), another in Cheng et al (Asian J Math 25:183–194, 2021) and give estimations of entropies of some special self-shrinkers.

Abstract:On some specified convex supporting sets of spheres, we find a generalized longitude function $\theta $ whose level sets are totally geodesic. Given a (weakly) harmonic map $u$ into $S^n$, the composition of $\theta $ and $u$ satisfies an elliptic equation of divergence type. With the aid of Harnack’s inequalities, we establish the image shrinking property and then regularity results. Applying such results to study the Gauss image of minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces, we obtain curvature estimates and corresponding Bernstein type theorems.

Abstract:The primary goal of this paper is to introduce bilinear analogues of uncentered spherical averages, Nikodym averages associated with spheres and the associated bilinear maximal functions. We obtain $L^p$-estimates for uncentered bilinear maximal functions for dimensions $d\geq2$. Moreover, we also discuss the one-dimensional case. In the process of developing these results, we also establish new and interesting results in the linear case. In particular, we will prove $L^p$-improving properties for single scale averaging operators and $L^p$-estimates for lacunary maximal functions in this context.

Abstract:We establish $L^{p_1}(\mathbb R^d) \times \cdots \times L^{p_n}(\mathbb R^d) \rightarrow L^r(\mathbb R^d)$ bounds for spherical averaging operators $\mathcal A^n$ in dimensions $d \geq 2$ for indices $1\le p_1,\dots , p_n\le \infty$ and $\frac{1}{p_1}+\cdots +\frac{1}{p_n}=\frac{1}{r}$. We obtain this result by first showing that $\mathcal A^n$ maps $L^1 \times \cdots \times L^1 \rightarrow L^1$. Our result extends that in \cite{IPS2021} for the case of $n = 2$. We also obtain similar estimates for lacunary maximal spherical averages in the largest possible open region of indices.

Abstract:In 2011, Dekel et al. developed highly geometric Hardy spaces $H^p(\Theta)$, for the full range $0<p\leq 1$, which are constructed by continuous multi-level ellipsoid covers $\Theta$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with high anisotropy in the sense that the ellipsoids can change shape rapidly from point to point and from level to level. In this article, if the cover $\Theta$ is pointwise continuous, then the authors further obtain some real-variable characterizations of $H^p(\Theta)$ in terms of the radial, the non-tangential and the tangential maximal functions, which generalize the known results on the anisotropic Hardy spaces of Bownik.

Abstract:In this article, we focus on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\times\cdots\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\rightarrow L^{2/m}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ estimates for multilinear maximal averages over non-degenerate hypersurfaces. Our findings is new for $m$-linear averages with $m\geq3$, and represent a reproof of the recent result of T. Borges, B. Foster, and Y. Ou on the curvature conditions of the hypersurfaces required in establishing $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\rightarrow L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ estimates of bilinear maximal functions.

Abstract:We generalize techniques by Coskun, Riedl, and Yeong, and obtain an almost optimal bound on the degree for the algebraic hyperbolicity of very general hypersurfaces in homogeneous varieties. As examples, we work out the cases of very general hypersurfaces in products of Grassmannians, orthogonal and symplectic Grassmannians, and flag varieties.

Abstract:We derive some estimates for stable minimal hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$. The estimates are related to recent proofs of Bernstein theorems for complete stable minimal hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$ for $3\le n\le 5$ by Chodosh-Li, Chodosh-Li-Minter-Stryker and Mazet. In particular, the estimates indicate that the methods in their proofs may not work for $n=6$, which is observed also by Antonelli-Xu and Mazet. The method of derivation in this work might also be applied to other problems.

Abstract:Lebesgue space estimates are obtained for the circular maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ restricted to a class of Heisenberg radial functions. Under this assumption, the problem reduces to studying a maximal operator on the Euclidean plane. This operator has a number of interesting features: it is associated to a non-smooth curve distribution and, furthermore, fails both the usual rotational curvature and cinematic curvature conditions.

Abstract:In this note, we provide a complete classification for the entire area maximizing hypersurfaces with an isolated singularity. We also construct an interesting illustrated example. For the area maximizing hypersurfaces over exterior domains, we obtain a partial result on their asymptotic behavior at infinity. We also establish the solvability of the exterior Dirichlet problems for the area maximizing hypersurfaces.

Abstract:In this article, we will use inverse mean curvature flow to establish an optimal Sobolev-type inequality for hypersurfaces $$\Sigma $$ with nonnegative sectional curvature in $$\mathbb {H}^n$$ . (J Differ Geom 98:237–260, 2014) under the stronger condition that $$\Sigma $$ is horospherical convex.

Abstract:We study the elliptic maximal functions defined by averages over ellipses and rotated ellipses which are multi-parametric variants of the circular maximal function. We prove that those maximal functions are bounded on $L^p$ for some $p\neq \infty$. For this purpose, we obtain some sharp multi-parameter local smoothing estimates.

Abstract:We prove $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^p_s({\mathbb R}^3)$ Sobolev improvement theorems for local averaging operators over real analytic surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$. For most such operators, in a sense made precise in the paper, the set of $(p,s)$ for which we prove $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^p_s({\mathbb R}^3)$ boundedness is optimal up to endpoints. Using an interpolation argument in conjunction with these $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^p_s({\mathbb R}^3)$ results we obtain an $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^q({\mathbb R}^3)$ improvement theorem, and the set of exponents $(p,q)$ obtained will also usually be optimal up to endpoints. The advantage the methods of this paper have over those of the author's earlier papers is that the oscillatory integral methods of the earlier papers, closely tied to the Van der Corput lemma, allow one to only prove 1/2 of a derivative of surface measure Fourier transform decay, while the methods of this paper, when combined with appropriate resolution of singularities methods, allow one to go up to the maximum possible 1 derivative. This allows us to prove the stronger sharp up to endpoints results.
