Abstract:The metakaolin-based geopolymer were fabricated using the complex activator, which the proportions of phosphoric acid (OPA) and aluminum dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) were 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100, respectively. The workability and mechanical properties of the geopolymer were investigated. Moreover, the effect of complex acid-activator on hydration behavior and microstructure of the metakaolin-based geopolymer were studied using isothermal calorimetry, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG/DTA) and Fourier Transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) techniques. As a result, the addition and increase of ADP solution in the activator effectively shorten the final setting time of the geopolymer, the final setting time of the specimens with 20–100% ADP were 24.8–88.1% of that of the specimen without ADP, respectively. And the fluidity and 3-day compressive strength of the geopolymers were increase by 11.7–54.6% and 4.2–16.3 MPa as a result of the introduction of 20–100% ADP. At the same time, the presence of ADP decreased the hydration heat of the geopolymer, which containing 100% ADP showed the lowest cumulative heat (175.2 J) compared to the geopolymer containing 80%, 60%, 40%, 20% and 0% ADP (262.5, 259.3, 319.8, 342.1 and 431.2 J, respectively) in the first 7 days. Additionally, the drying shrinkage observations and the MIP analysis revealed that the increase of the total porosity and harmful pores of the geopolymer specimens with the addition and increase of ADP, resulting in improvement of the bulk stability and decrease of the 28-day compressive strength of the geopolymer under standard curing conditions.
