Abstract:We prove a Painlevé theorem for bounded quasiregular curves in Euclidean spaces extending removability results for quasiregular mappings due to Iwaniec and Martin. The theorem is proved by extending a fundamental inequality for volume forms to calibrations and proving a Caccioppoli inequality for quasiregular curves. We also establish a qualitatively sharp removability theorem for quasiregular curves whose target is a complete Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature bounded from above. As an application, we extend a theorem of Bonk and Heinonen for quasiregular mappings to the setting of quasiregular curves: every non-constant quasiregular $\omega$-curve from $\mathbb{R}^n$ into $( N, \omega )$, where the bounded cohomology class of $\omega$ is in the bounded Künneth ideal, has infinite energy.

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an alternative appraoch to an expectaion of Fässler et al [J. Geom. Anal. 2016] by showing that a metrically quasiregular mapping between two equiregular subRiemannian manifolds of homogeneous dimension $Q\geq 2$ has a negligible branch set. One main new ingredient is to develop a suitable extension of the generalized Pansu differentiability theory, in spirit of earlier works by Margulis-Mostow, Karmanova and Vodopyanov. Another new ingredient is to apply the theory of Sobolev spaces based on upper gradients developed by Heinonen, Koskela, Shanmugalingam and Tyson to establish the necessary analytic foundations.

Rigidity of J-rotational rational maps and critical quasicircle maps

Abstract:We present a number of rigidity results concerning holomorphic dynamical systems admitting rotation quasicircles. Firstly, we show the absence of line fields on the Julia set of any rational map that is geometrically finite away from a number of rotation quasicircles with bounded type rotation number. As an application, we prove combinatorial rigidity associated to the problem of degeneration of Herman rings of the simplest configuration. Secondly, we extend a result of de Faria and de Melo on the $C^{1+\alpha}$ rigidity of critical circle maps with bounded type rotation number to a larger class of dynamical objects, namely critical quasicircle maps. Unlike critical circle maps, critical quasicircle maps may have imbalanced inner and outer criticalities. As a consequence, we prove dynamical universality and exponential convergence of renormalization towards a horseshoe attractor.

A Unified Approach to Quasiregular Linearization in the Plane

Abstract:We generalize the classical König's and Böttcher's Theorems in complex dynamics to certain quasiregular mappings in the plane. Our approach to these results is unified in the sense that it does not depend on the local injectivity, or not, of the map at the fixed point. By passing to the logarithmic transform we obtain a quasiconformal mapping in either case. Certain restrictions on the quasiregular mappings are needed in order for there to be a candidate to linearize to. These are provided by requiring a simple infinitesimal space of the mapping at the fixed point and restricting to the BIP mappings introduced by the authors in prior work.

Rigidity Results for large displacement quotients of mapping class groups

Abstract:We consider quotients of mapping class groups of orientable, finite type surfaces by subgroups whose action on the curve graph has large displacement. This class includes quotients by the normal closure of a pseudo-Anosov element, the mapping class group itself, and in view of forthcoming work of Abbott, Berlyne, Ng, and Rasmussen, also random quotients. First, we show that every automorphism of the corresponding quotient of the curve graph is induced by a mapping class, thus generalising Ivanov's Theorem about automorphisms of the curve graph. Then we use this to prove quasi-isometric rigidity under additional assumptions, satisfied by all aforementioned quotients. In the process, we clarify a proof of quasi-isometric rigidity of mapping class groups by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto. Finally, we show that the outer automorphisms groups of our quotients, as well as their abstract commensurators, are "the smallest possible".

Abstract:Suppose that $M$ is a closed, connected, and oriented Riemannian $n$-manifold, $f \colon \mathbb{R}^n \to M$ is a quasiregular map automorphic under a discrete group $\Gamma$ of Euclidean isometries, and $f$ has finite multiplicity in a fundamental cell of $\Gamma$. We show that if $\Gamma$ has a sufficiently large translation subgroup $\Gamma_T$, then $\dim \Gamma \in \{0, n-1, n\}$. If $f$ is strongly automorphic and induces a non-injective Lattès-type uniformly quasiregular map, then the same holds without the assumption on the size of $\Gamma_T$. Moreover, an even stronger restriction holds in the Lattès case if $M$ is not a rational cohomology sphere.

Abstract:Ioffe's criterion and various reformulations of it have become a~standard tool in proving theorems guaranteeing various regularity properties such as metric regularity, i.e., the openness with a linear rate around the reference point, of a~(set-valued) mapping. We derive an analogue of it guaranteeing the almost openness with a linear rate of mappings acting in incomplete spaces and having non-closed graphs, in general. The main tool used is an approximate version of Ekeland's variational principle for a function that is not necessarily lower semi-continuous and is defined on an abstract (possibly incomplete) space. Further, we focus on the stability of this property under additive single-valued and set-valued perturbations.

Abstract:We define a subclass of quasiregular curves, called signed quasiregular curves, which contains holomorphic curves and quasiregular mappings. As our main result, we prove a growth theorem of Bonk-Heinonen type for signed quasiregular curves. To obtain our main result, we prove that signed quasiregular curves satisfy a weak reverse H\"older inequality and that this weak reverse H\"older inequality implies the main result. We also obtain higher integrability for signed quasiregular curves. Further, we prove a cohomological value distribution result for signed quasiregular curves by using our main result and equidistribution.

Abstract:Sobolev mappings exhibiting only pointwise quasiregularity-type bounds have arisen in various applications, leading to a recently developed theory of quasiregular values. In this article, we show that by using rescaling, one obtains a direct bridge between this theory and the classical theory of quasiregular maps. More precisely, we prove that a non-constant mapping $f \colon \Omega \to \mathbb{R}^n$ with a $(K, \Sigma)$-quasiregular value at $f(x_0)$ can be rescaled at $x_0$ to a non-constant $K$-quasiregular mapping. Our proof of this fact involves establishing a quasiregular values -version of the linear distortion bound of quasiregular mappings. A quasiregular values variant of the small $K$ -theorem is obtained as an immediate corollary of our main result.

Abstract:We investigate some aspects of the geometry of two classical generalisations of the Hilbert schemes of points. Precisely, we show that parity conjecture for $\text{Quot}_r^d\mathbb{A}^3$ already fails for $d=8$ and $r=2$ and that lots of the elementary components of the nested Hilbert schemes of points on smooth quasi-projective varieties of dimension at least 4 are generically non-reduced. We also deduce that nested Hilbert schemes of points on smooth surfaces have generically non-reduced components. Finally, we give an infinite family of elementary components of the classical Hilbert schemes of points.

An analogue of Green's Functions for Quasiregular Maps

Abstract:Green's functions are highly useful in analyzing the dynamical behavior of polynomials in their escaping set. The aim of this paper is to construct an analogue of Green's functions for planar quasiregular mappings of degree two and constant complex dilatation. These Green's functions are dynamically natural, in that they semi-conjugate our quasiregular mappings to the real squaring map. However, they do not share the same regularity properties as Green's functions of polynomials. We use these Green's functions to investigate properties of the boundary of the escaping set and give several examples to illustrate behavior that does not occur for the dynamics of quadratic polynomials.

Abstract:In his book "Metric structures for Riemannian and non-Riemannian spaces", Gromov defined two properties of Riemannian manifolds, ellipticity and quasiregular ellipticity, and suggested that there may be a connection between the two. Since then, groups of researchers working independently have proved strikingly similar results about these two concepts. We obtain new topological obstructions to the two properties: most notably, we show that closed manifolds of both types must have virtually abelian fundamental group. We also give the first examples of open manifolds which are elliptic but not quasireguarly elliptic and vice versa. Whether there is a direct connection between these properties -- and, in particular, whether they are equivalent for closed manifolds -- remains elusive.
