Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a method to promote the robustness for the stabilized optical frequency comb (OFC) referenced on the microwave atomic clock. The phase-locked loop (PLL) for the repetition rate of the OFC uses the charge-pump phase-frequency detector (CPPFD) instead of a double-balanced mixer (DBM), which serves as the phase detector in the traditional OFC locking schemes. The phase noise performance of the CPPFD scheme is achieved to the same level as the traditional DBM scheme, while the capture range of the PLL is significantly broadened. This greatly enhances the robustness of the stabilized OFC without degrading the noise performance.

Abstract:We present an optically stabilized Erbium fiber frequency comb with a broad repetition rate tuning range based on a hybrid mode-locked oscillator. We lock two combmodes to narrow-linewidth reference lasers in turn to investigate the best performance of control loops. The control bandwidth of fast and slow piezoelectric transducers reaches 70 kHz, while that of pump current modulation with phase-lead compensation is extended to 32 kHz, exceeding laser intrinsic response. Eventually, simultaneous lock of both loops is realized to totally phase-stabilize the comb, which will facilitate precision dual-comb spectroscopy, laser ranging, and timing distribution. In addition, a 1.8-MHz span of the repetition rate is achieved by an automatic optical delay line that is helpful in manufacturing a secondary comb with a similar repetition rate. The oscillator is housed in a homemade temperature-controlled box with an accuracy of +/- 0.02 K, which not only keeps high signal-to-noise ratio of the beat notes with reference lasers, but also guarantees self-starting at the same mode-locking every time. Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate a fully stabilized Er: fiber frequency comb by using a fiber-based, high-precision optical-microwave phase detector. To achieve high-precision and long-term phase locking of the repetition rate to a microwave reference, frequency control techniques (tuning pump power and cavity length) are combined together as its feedback. Since the pump power has been used for stabilization of the repetition rate, we introduce a pair of intracavity prisms as a regulator for carrier-envelope offset frequency, thereby phase locking one mode of the comb to the rubidium saturated absorption transition line. The stabilized comb performs the same high stability as the reference for the repetition rate and provides a residual frequency instability of 3.6 x 10(-13) for each comb mode. The demonstrated stabilization scheme could provide a high-precision comb for optical communication, direct frequency comb spectroscopy. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optical frequency combs provide a powerful tool for precise measurement of the optical frequency, holding significant importance in fields such as spectroscopy, optical communication and optical clock. The frequency stability of the comb line determines the precision of the frequency measurement, but the delicate interplay between high precision, low power consumption and integration still needs to be optimized. To this aim, here we demonstrate a frequency measurement scheme based on a fully stabilized electro-optic comb, in which the pump laser frequency and repetition rate are independently locked to the atomic transition and microwave signal. The measurement precision of the demonstrated wavemeter can reach sub-kHz-level, and the parallel measurement of multiple wavelengths can be performed. Therefore, by combining the technical scheme reported here with advanced integrated functional devices, our system is expected to provide a feasible solution for chip-scale frequency precision measurement and reference. Optical frequency combs enable precise measurement of optical frequencies, but integrated setups require a delicate balance between high precision and low power consumption. The authors demonstrate a sub-kHz-frequency measurement scheme based on a fully stabilized electro-optic comb that enables the parallel measurement of multiple wavelengths.

Abstract:A 25-line flattened optical frequency comb (OFC) is generated by cascading Mach-Zehnder modulators, and its coherent beating properties are investigated. The effect of bias voltages and the power of radio frequency signals on the flatness of the OFC, and the phase relationships between each comb line are theoretically deduced. In the experiment, a 25-line OFC with a flatness of less than 1 dB and an optical sideband suppression ratio of 12 dB is successfully demonstrated, and the agreement between simulation and experimental results supports the validity of the model for analysis of the flatness. The measured amplitude of harmonic signals by coherent beating of the generated 25-line OFC matches well with the theoretical prediction. A phase noise of -105.31dBc/Hz at 10 kHz frequency offset for the 12th harmonic signal almost without phase noise degradation proves the high coherence of the generated OFC lines.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact 29.3 GHz visible astro-comb covering the spectrum from 560nm to 700nm. A 837 MHz Yb:fiber laser frequency comb phase locked to a Rb clock served as the seed comb to ensure the frequency stability and high side mode suppression ratio. After the visible super-continuum generation, a cavity-length-fixed Fabry-Perot cavity made by ultra-low expansion glass was utilized to filter the comb teeth for eliminating the rapid active dithering. The mirrors were home-made complementary chirped mirrors pair with zero dispersion and high reflection to guarantee no mode skipping. These filtered comb teeth were clearly resolved in an astronomical spectrograph of 49,000 resolution, exhibiting sharp linetype, zero noise floor, and uniform exposure amplitude.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) in the 1.65 µm wavelength band are promising for methane sensing and extended high-capacity optical communications. In this work, a frequency-modulated (FM) OFC is generated from a 1.65 µm single-section quantum well laser. This is characterized by a 1 kHz-wide beatnote signal at ∼19.4 GHz. Typical FM optical spectra are shown and optical linewidth of the OFC narrows through the mutual injection locking process in the comb formation. No distinct pulse train is observed on oscilloscope, which conforms with the FM operation. Furthermore, to add further evidence that four-wave mixing (FWM) is the driving mechanism of the comb formation, FWM frequency conversion characterization is conducted on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fabricated together with the tested laser. An efficiency of ∼-30 dB confirms the capability of FM mode locking.

Abstract:Electro-optic frequency combs, generated by cascaded intensity and phase modulators, are known for their frequency agility. However, frequency detuning induced pulse distortion significantly hinders their applicability in asynchronous optical sampling. In this letter, we propose a scheme where a motor-driven optical delay line between the phase and intensity modulators serves as an effective pulse-duration compensation mechanism. A 10 GHz flat-topped optical frequency comb (OFC) at a central wavelength of 1552 nm is first optimized to output a 7.2 ps pulse. It is seen that the temporal pulses experience dramatic distortion and elongation (up to 130 ps) when frequency offset is present. Interestingly, the output pulse duration is periodically modulated by the frequency offset, and the associated period is inversely proportional to a system delay time ( ) that is fundamentally linked to the phase retardation between the intensity and phase modulators. In this scheme, we derive an algorithm that can drive the optical delay line in a deterministic way to counter the effect of frequency detuning, and successfully demonstrate an OFC tunable across 8- 12 GHz, with a constant pulse duration ( ps). Our approach provides a practical solution for stabilizing pulse duration for repetition rate-tunable OFCs and can bring new capabilities in optical sensing and sampling.

Abstract:An approach is reported to acquire an optical frequency standard based on precise frequency locking between optical frequency comb and continuous wave. A stabilized erbium-fiber-based frequency comb is created by locking to the two-photon absorption resonance of rubidium atoms. An Erbium-doped distributed-feedback narrow linewidth lasers is presented with an actively stabilized all fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. With this structure, many lines of the optical frequency comb can make a contribution to the error signal. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is enhanced compared to traditional way which utilizes only one comb line. An acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is used to compensate the noise in fiber which is induced by environment. The relative frequency offset instability is 2 x 10(-13) at 1 s and 6 x 10(-15) at 1000 s. This stabilized system can be wisely used in optical communication at 1550 nm. The main advantage of this structure is the ability for long distance frequency transmission. Without dispersion, the stability and the robustness of the transmission is greater than the scheme only with the frequency comb. We transferred the signals along 10km optical fiber link with it. The relative frequency stability loss of the frequency signal is 1.1 x 10(-15) at 1 s and reaches 7.6 x 10(-19) at 1000 s.

Abstract:A scheme using one intensity modulator and two phase modulators driven directly by sinusoidal waveform to generate an optical-frequency comb (OFC) is experimentally demonstrated. It is relatively simple, where Bragg grating or specially tailored waveforms are not used. By setting the ratio of direct-current bias to half-wave voltage and phase shifts between sinusoidal waveform applied on the intensity and two phase modulators at appropriate values, 29 comb lines with spectral power variation less than 1.5 dB at 10 GHz are obtained. And the scheme has adjustability; a flat-top OFC with frequency spacing of 9.5-10 GHz is achieved.
Optical frequency comb generation based on spectral broadening of a phase locked dual-wavelength microcavity laser

Abstract:A highly coherent optical frequency comb (OFC) based on spectral broadening of a phase-locked dual-wavelength microcavity laser is presented. By directly modulating the microcavity laser to generate multiple sidebands, the cross-injection locking of the dual modes is achieved and the beat-signal linewidth is improved from 13.5 MHz to less than 100 Hz. Subsequently, 21 flat comb teeth in a ±3 dB power variation are achieved by combining a phase modulator. Finally, an OFC with a bandwidth of 16 nm is successfully realized by narrowing the optical pulse and spectral broadening in a commercial nonlinear optical fiber. The repetition rate has a low phase noise of -102 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, demonstrating the generated OFC has a high degree of coherence.

Abstract:Continuously and widely tunable lasers actively stabilized on a frequency reference are broadly employed in atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics. The frequency-stabilized optical frequency comb (OFC) provides a novel optical frequency reference with a broadband spectrum that meets the requirement of laser frequency stabilization. Therefore, we demonstrate a frequency-stabilized and precisely tunable laser system based on it. In this scheme, the laser frequency locked to the OFC is driven to jump over the ambiguity zones, which blocks the wide tuning of the locked laser, and tuned until the mode hopping happens with the always-activated feedback loop. Meanwhile, we compensate the gap of the frequency jump with a synchronized acoustic optical modulator to ensure the continuity. This scheme is applied to an external cavity diode laser (ECDL) and we achieve tuning at a rate of about 7 GHz/s with some readily available commercial electronics. Furthermore, we tune the frequency-stabilized laser only with the feedback of diode current and its average tuning speed can exceed 100 GHz/s. Due to the resource-efficient configuration and the simplicity of completion, this scheme can be referenced and find wide applications in AMO experiments.

Abstract:We demonstrate a stable coherent dual comb generator with two phase/intensity-modulated combs. The optical fiber path induced phase fluctuation results in the coherent dual comb beating phase noise. We transfer this phase noise to a 40MHz intermediate frequency with dual-heterodyne phase error transfer, decreasing by a phase-locked loop and optical phase locked loop. Under the scheme, stable coherent dual comb with slightly different repetition rates and offset frequency is generated.

Abstract:We demonstrate an approach to create a stable erbium-fiber-based frequency comb at communication band by directly locking the combs to two rubidium atomic transitions resonances (electromagnetically induced transparency absorption and two-photon absorption), respectively. This approach directly transfers the precision and stability of the atomic transitions to the comb. With its distinguishing feature of compactness by removing the conventional octave-spanning spectrum and f-to-2f beating facilities and the ability to directly control the comb's frequency at the atomic transition frequency, this stable optical comb can be widely used in optical communication, frequency standard, and optical spectroscopy and microscopy.

Abstract:An optical comb based stable frequency dissemination system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated over a multi-access optical fiber loop link. In the system, a new technique based on optical-microwave phase locking loop is designed for phase compensation. In the experiment, a mode-locked fiber laser at a repetition rate of 100 MHz is used to provide an optical source at local site, then it transmits along a 150 km fiber loop link. To testify the proposed system, two accessing nodes are measured in the loop link. The dissemination frequency instability is measured at 3.65 × 10-15/1 s and 7.8 × 10-18/1000 s at the intermediate node. The similar performance is shown at the other node. Hence, the system has the potential application in high-precision frequency transmission system via a long-haul multi-access loop link.

Abstract:We demonstrate a phase conjugation frequency dissemination scheme using an optical frequency comb as a coherent source. After the comb's radio frequency is detected by a photodiode, its repetition frequency's first harmonic is used to modulate a laser, which is injected into a 10 km fiber link. The round-trip signal is mixed with the triple harmonic thereby obtaining a signal that is immune to the fluctuation at the remote end. This method results in frequency instability of 1.1 x 10(-17) at 10(4) s. Our scheme provides a potential approach to deliver coherent frequencies to many places with high stability. Abstract:Low noise and high repetition rate optical frequency combs are desirable for many applications from timekeeping to precision spectroscopy. For example, gigahertz repetition rate sources greatly increase the acquisition speed of spectra in a dual-comb modality when compared to lower repetition rate sources, while still maintaining sufficient instantaneous resolution to resolve ro-vibrational signatures from molecules in a variety of conditions. In this paper, we present the stabilization and characterization of a turnkey commercial 1~GHz mode-locked laser that operates at telecom wavelengths (1.56 $\mu$m). Fiber amplification and spectral broadening result in the high signal-to-noise ratio detection and stabilization of $\textit{f}_{\textit{ceo}}$ with 438 mrad of residual phase noise (integrated from 10$^2$ to 10$^7$ Hz). Simultaneously, we stabilize the beatnote between the nearest comb mode and a cavity stabilized continuous-wave laser at 1.55 $\mu$m with 41 mrad of residual phase noise (integrated from 10$^2$ to 10$^7$ Hz). This robust, self-referenced comb system is built with off-the-shelf polarization-maintaining fiber components and will be useful for a wide range of low noise frequency comb applications that benefit from the increased repetition rate.

Abstract:A scheme to generate a flat optical frequency comb (OFC) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on a directly modulated distributed feedback (DFB) laser cascaded with a polarization modulator (PolM). In the proposed scheme, the DFB laser is optically injection-locked by a tunable laser source and directly modulated by a radio frequency (RF) signal, which is amplified by a microwave power amplifier. The optical signal is then sent to PolM via a polarization controller (PC) and modulated by the amplified and phase-shifted RF signal from the same source. The optical signal is finally received and measured by an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) after transmitting through another PC and a polarizer. Here, the OFC with their power variation within 3 dB is desired, and four OFCs with 6, 6, 5, and 4 comb lines are generated using the RF signals with different frequencies, which have a flatness of, respectively, 2.4, 2.5, 0.7, and 0.6 dB. Abstract:We introduce a simple and robust scheme for optical frequency transfer of an ultra-stable source light field via an optical frequency comb to a field at a target optical frequency, where highest stability is required, e.g. for the interrogation of an optical clock. The scheme relies on a topology for end-to-end suppression of the influence of optical path-length fluctuations, which is attained by actively phase-stabilized delivery, combined with common-path propagation. This approach provides a robust stability improvement without the need for additional isolation against environmental disturbances such as temperature, pressure or humidity changes. We measure residual frequency transfer instabilities by comparing the frequency transfers carried out with two independent combs simultaneously. Residual fractional frequency instabilities between two systems of $8\times10^{-18}$ at 1 s and $3\times10^{-21}$ at $10^5$ s averaging time are observed. We discuss the individual noise contributions to the residual instability. The presented scheme is technically simple, robust against environmental parameter fluctuations, and enables an ultra-stable frequency transfer, e.g. to optical clock lasers or to lasers in gravitational wave detectors.
