Abstract:On September 2, 2023, Odisha, India, experienced a devastating lightning event that resulted in numerous casualties and injuries. This investigation delves into the meteorological conditions surrounding the incident by utilizing satellite data from INSAT 3D and MODIS, ground-based measurements from a lightning sensor network, and re-analysis outputs from ERA5. Identification of the severe lightning hours relied on real-time data from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) lightning sensor network, accessible internally at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Satellite Meteorology Division (SATMET). The INSAT 3D satellite observations revealed that the cloud top brightness temperature (CTBT) and cloud top pressure (CTP) dropped up to –89°C and 100 hPa, respectively, in the regions affected by lightning. Furthermore, in the hours of intense lightning discharge, there was a significant rise in cloud ice water content as per ERA5. This underscores the pivotal role played by the development of towering clouds in contributing to the occurrence of lightning disasters. Additionally, the INSAT 3D-derived rainfall product disclosed an enhanced hourly rain accumulation, reaching up to 26 mm. This suggests that intense downpours accompanied and followed the lightning strikes. The validity of INSAT 3D satellite measurements was affirmed through corroborative MODIS observations. The study also highlighted the role of enhanced convective available potential energy (CAPE) of ~4500 J/kg over the central regions of Odisha, signalling the imminent risk of an intense lightning calamity. Ultimately, this investigation provides valuable insights into the physical mechanisms behind lightning catastrophes, emphasizing the importance of incorporating cloud features and atmospheric instability parameters into predictive models to enhance lightning prediction and warning systems in India, crucial for advancing operational infrastructure in weather forecast and meteorological services.
