Abstract:In this work, magnetic S-doped Fe-Cu-La trimetallic oxides (S-FeCuLaO) were prepared and adopted as an adsorbent to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The S-FeCuLaO material was characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS and VSM, and batch adsorption experiments were employed to investigate the effects of main interfering factors on Cr(VI) adsorption. The results demonstrated that almost 100% of Cr(VI) was removed at initial pH 3–4 and Cr(VI) removal efficiency sharply declined to 25.3% with initial pH increasing to 10. Cr(VI) adsorption process abided by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, indicating that Cr(VI) adsorption onto S-FeCuLaO was monolayer chemical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) achieved from Langmuir model at initial pH 4 reached 157.98 mg/g. XPS analysis indicated 36.7% of adsorbed Cr(VI) anions was converted to non-toxic Cr(III) by Cu(I) and S2−. Furthermore, the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) at pH < pHPZC was proposed as electrostatic attraction, ion-exchange reaction, reduction of partial Cr(VI) and formation of Cr(OH)3. Among the five coexisting anions studied, only SO4 2− suppressed Cr(VI) adsorption. Moreover, the adsorbent displayed high stability at pH above 4 and great reusability with the removal of above 96% Cr(VI) in the fifth cycle. Therefore, the magnetic S-FeCuLaO composite is a low-cost material for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) from water environment.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the adsorption removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in aqueous solution by magnetic sulfur - doped iron - copper - lanthanum trimetallic oxide (S - FeCuLaO). Specifically, the paper addresses the following key issues: 1. **Cr(VI) pollution problem**: Hexavalent chromium is a common heavy - metal pollutant, which is highly carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic. Due to its special physical and chemical properties, Cr(VI) is widely used in electroplating, stainless - steel manufacturing, leather tanning, printing, textile manufacturing and pigment industries, resulting in a large amount of Cr(VI) - containing wastewater. Once these wastewaters are discharged into water bodies, they will seriously pollute the natural environment and threaten human health. Therefore, the effective removal of Cr(VI) from industrial wastewater is very urgent. 2. **Selection and optimization of adsorption materials**: The paper prepared a magnetic S - FeCuLaO composite material by chemical co - precipitation method and characterized it in detail. The experimental results show that S - FeCuLaO has a significant removal effect on Cr(VI), and the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 157.98 mg/g (under the condition of initial pH 4). In addition, this material also shows good stability and reusability. 3. **Study of adsorption mechanism**: The paper discussed in detail the adsorption mechanism of Cr(VI) on the surface of S - FeCuLaO. Research shows that the removal process of Cr(VI) mainly includes three steps: - **Electrostatic attraction**: When the pH value is lower than the pH point of zero charge (pHPZC), Cr(VI) anions are adsorbed on the positively charged S - FeCuLaO surface through electrostatic attraction. - **Ion - exchange reaction**: Cr(VI) anions undergo an ion - exchange reaction with - OH groups on the surface of the adsorbent. - **Reduction reaction**: Some adsorbed Cr(VI) anions are reduced to low - toxicity Cr(III) under the action of Cu(I) and S\(^{2-}\), and further generate Cr(OH)\(_3\) precipitate. 4. **Analysis of influencing factors**: The paper systematically studied the effects of solution pH value, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration and co - existing anions on Cr(VI) adsorption. The results show that the solution pH value has a significant impact on the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI), and the optimal pH value is around 4. In addition, the co - existing sulfate ions (SO\(_4^{2-}\)) will have an inhibitory effect on Cr(VI) adsorption. In conclusion, this paper systematically studied the adsorption performance and mechanism of magnetic S - FeCuLaO composite material for Cr(VI) by preparing and characterizing it, providing a valuable reference for the treatment of Cr(VI) pollution in industrial wastewater and groundwater.
