Abstract:Polyandric marriages,the remains of an ancient system of marriage and family,refer to the practice of one woman marrying a number of men.It is an important form of polyandry in which a woman is married to two or more men who are one another's brothers.Since ancient times,polyandry marriages have attracted the attention of scholars and researchers,and have been discussed deeply.In some remote minority areas in Western China,polyandry still exists.The Tibetan polyandric marriages were formed in a specific national context,so they are directly related to Tibetan natural environment as well as its economy,history,ancient culture,etc.

Abstract:Historically-speaking, centuries of interactions between Han Chinese newcomers from the north of China and indigenous Tai-speaking ethnic minorities in the south have left deep, indelible traces in the language and culture of the latter and raise questions of identity and language policy in modern times. The language and culture in this study is Zhuang, one of many Tai languages and the largest minority language in China today. Using kinship terms as an example, we employ the analytical tools of Geographic Information System (GIS) to map and analyze the spatial pattern of sinification of kinship terms and attempt to explain the process of cultural and linguistic interaction that may have led to such distribution in the Zhuang domain. We use published data on Zhuang kinship terms from thiry-four representative locations in Guangxi and border areas (four in eastern Yunnan and one in western Guangdong) and semi-quantify them according to their pronunciations: three for Han-like pronunciations, one for more clearly Zhuang, and two for linguistic forms in between. The spatial pattern of kinship term sinification scores based on interpolation of the sampling locations shows that high degrees of sinification are located in areas close to the coast or international border with Vietnam, with gentle land slope and close proximity to major transportation hubs, reflecting the importance of both physical features and economic development in those areas in facilitating interactions between the two cultures in the sinification process. The degree of sinification of kinship terms also varies with their positions in a family kinship tree, perhaps reflecting Han social customs and male dominance in society more than traditional Tai kinship systems, which are generally more bilateral in nature.

Based on the first-hand investigation and from an ethnological perspective, this article gives a case study of the Hui marriage and family in Nagu Town, a well-known Hui community of China, and covers its marriage system and practice, residence patterns, family structure and kinship terminology.

Abstract:The relevance of the study is determined by the necessity to understand the mechanisms of formation within a society of socially significant ideas, beliefs and behavioral strategies. The aim is to interpret the notions of marriage that existed in China’s Pearl River Delta region among Zi-Shu-Nv girls who were known for choosing not to marry. Materials and methods. The article deals with the semiotic approach to the analysis of Zi-Shu-Nv marriage belief in Chinese culture. This belief is interpreted as a cultural text, part of semio-sphere. The method of analysis was the interpretation of the phenomenon based on deconstruction from the perspective of metalanguage theory with a focus on contextual metalanguage, interpretive competence metalanguage and textual metalanguage. Results. Each metalanguage is characterized by its own codes and rules. The article underlines the role of each metalanguage in the origin and development of Zi-Shu-NVs’ marriage belief. The authors come to the conclusion that this belief is an inevitable outcome under the influence of social, personal and textual peculiarities of its time. Practical implications. The results can be used in the interpretation of social phenomena in modern society.

Abstract:This is a case study of the marriage between Dao Yingmeng,a Cheli Xuanwei Official,and a Burmese princess in the sixteenth century and it reveals the traits of Tusi System with the dual feudal influence from the Central Plains Imperial Court of China and the Burmese Imperial Court.Through the analysis of the wedding ceremony,gift exchanges and tribute presentation as well as the religious background in this area,the paper tries to interpret the psychological duality of Cheli Xuanwei Tusi System which helped establish the local royalty and the local society.Different from the analysis of this marriage from the tribute presentation,this paper focuses on the multi-relations between China and Burma as well as their relations with Xishuangbanna.

Abstract:Investigating lexical features with statistical methods has always been a key object of quantitative linguistic research. However, though Zhuang is the mother tongue of the minority with the largest population in China, its lexical features have attracted little attention from the researchers employing quantitative means. Based on a corpus (CZL) of over 500,000 tokens of the Zhuang language, this study addresses the features of word frequency distribution of Zhuang. The results show that Zhuang shares the universal feature of other tested languages in that its word frequency distribution abides by the Zipf's Law and the "Least Effort Principle". The study also tests the word frequency distribution of Zhuang texts of different genres, which shows that for different genres, the values of some parameters, such as b, are different. Moreover, in order to test whether Zhuang language has any distinctive or typological features in word frequency distribution, the values of the h-point and a-index of the texts in CZL are computed as well. It is found that the two indexes are effective in distinguishing Zhuang from other languages, and the position of Zhuang on the analytism-synthetism continuum proposed by Popescu is close to those of the Polynesian language family, which may be helpful for intersubjective placement of Zhuang into a language group. This study would open a new perspective in the statistical lexical research of Zhuang language and present a "new" corroborated language with respect to the laws in quantitative linguistics.

Abstract:Intermarriage circle theory and empirical research are one of the most important contents of marriage and family in Anthropology and Ethnology.However,the academics have not paid enough attention to the ethnic minority's intermarriage circle.So we chose the status of Tu's intermarriage circle for the research theme.According to one typical Tu village's investigation,we analyze the issue from the perspective of microscopic community in order to supply intermarriage circle-research.This field work sets in ethnic group,religion and region and so on,and discusses the standard by which Tu's selects a person to marry,the opening level of intermarriage circle,intermarriage distance and its influence factors.

Abstract:Chinese marriage law is a relative law based on the tow-line blood law,do the traditional culture and social practice of 56 nations of China all obey this basis? Abstract:Zhuang and Thailand languages are both belonged to the Dong-Tai branch of Han-Tibetan language family.Although they share the same resource and can be used as verbs and prepositions,the trend of grammaticalization is different,with continuous and durative aspects in Thailand language and without these two aspects in Zhuang language.The grammaticalization feature of Thailand language could be reflected from the use of auxiliary words of mediaeval times Chinese.The grammaticalization feature of Thailand language should be one of the grammaticalization feature of early Zhuang-Dong branch,including Zhuang language.Just because heavily influenced by Chinese language,Zhuang language takes the similar way in grammar while Thailand language preserves the grammatical feature of ancient Dong-Tai languages which were far away from the influence of Chinese.

Abstract:Taking the marriage customs of Wa People lived in Yonghe,Cangyuan county as research subject,the paper illustrated socio-cultural functions of marriage customs of Wa People from the perspective of Culture Function Theory,and it finds that marriage customs of Wa People have the following socio-cultural functions.Firstly,it regulates the basic social ethics of Wa people;Secondly,it also reflects the history of cultural change caused by the cultural communication.Thirdly,it demonstrates the development of family values of Wa People in Yonghe.

Abstract:As the starting point of “human relations” and th e basi s of feudal hierarchy, marriage in the Tang Dynasty was usually bound subject to Confucian doctrine about “Yin and Yang and the reverend and the humble”, all the customs of which were dominated by the patriarchal order as criterion. Howev er, the matrimonial customs in the Tang Dynasty were both feudal and conservativ e and realistic and open. This characteristic of theirs stipulated the tradition al principle of “man standardization” to be preserved in the matrimonial customs, and meanwhile a new situation came into being in which such marriages as “t he man married to the woman’s family” and “the husband moved into the wife’s house” began to be accepted. The appearance of such matrimonial customs indica tes the historical fact that women took a considerably high status in the Tang D ynasty.

Abstract:Kinship address forms carry profound connotations. They are linguistic, social, and cultural phenomena, all of which hold significant importance in daily communication. Due to diverse social backgrounds, substantial differences exist between English and Chinese kinship address forms. Although the study of kinship terms is not a novel topic, it continues to be of research value due to its frequent usage in daily communication. Under the guidance of intercultural communication theory, this paper provides a brief comparison of Chinese and English kinship address forms, considering perspectives from the elder generation, the same generation, and the younger generation. It analyzes the underlying causes in terms of social structure, cultural background, and economic context, with the aim of fostering an awareness of cultural disparities between China and Western countries. This understanding can help reduce culture shock and the occurrence of pragmatic failures and provide valuable references for future comparative studies. The results demonstrate that Chinese kinship address forms are intricate and detailed, accurately describing all kinship relationships, including lineal and collateral, paternal and maternal, consanguinity and affinity, elder and younger generations, among others. In contrast, English kinship address forms are highly generalized and simplistic, typically distinguishing only between males and females.
The Conceptual Structure of Kinship Words of Dai Nationality

Abstract:By using the method of natural classifying and multi-dimensional scale,the study probed into the conceptual structure of kinship words of Dai nationality.The subjects were 83 senior high school pupils.The results showed that there were 5 categories in the conceptual structure of kinship words of Daxi nationality:(1)the members of the family before one's marrige;(2)the members of the family after one's marrige;(3) the eldership and compeer members of cousinship;(4)the grandchildren and nephews of collateral branches and in-law;(5)the compeer brothers in-law and the compeer sisters in-law.There were two dimensions in the conceptual structure of kinship words of Dai nationality.One is the intimate level of the relatives before one's marrige,the other is the intimate level of the relatives after one's marrige.The conceptual structure of kinship words of Dai nationality was determined by the attributes of kinship words,and influenced by the marriage form,the fashions of production and life styles.

Abstract:This article focuses on the two dimensions of history and field of the marriage ceremony music of the Yao people, and then grasps the overall cultural significance of the traditional music of the Yao people. Through the investigation of the marriage ritual music of Nanling Yao, the author believes that it is the traditional culture of the Yao nationality that has undergone a series of conversion and cultivation processes in the long-term Chinese political, social and historical development context since the Song Dynasty product. It is also a product of the selective inheritance and reconstruction of a culture that has interacted with and merged with other cultures in a pluralistic society and historical background. In particular, the system of Xuanwei Division and Health Center established during the Yuan and Ming dynasties created an extremely favorable social space for the process of cultivating the traditional culture of the Yao nationality.

Abstract:Using data from two surveys in three counties in which the prevalence of uxorilocal marriage differs greatly, this article analyzes the effects of marriage form, individual, family, and social factors on age at first marriage and spousal age difference. The results show that, under the Chinese patrilineal joint family system, compared with the dominant virilocal marriage form, uxorilocal marriage significantly lowers women's age at first marriage, increases men's age at first marriage, and consequently increases spousal age difference. Education, number of brothers, adoption status, marriage arrangement, and marriage circle also significantly affect age at first marriage for both genders. Age at first marriage and spousal age difference vary greatly among the three counties. These findings address the process and consequences of change in rural family and marriage customs during the current demographic and social transition and may help to promote later marriage and later childbearing under the present low fertility conditions in rural China.
