Abstract:Tinfoil manufacturing and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling remain rudimentary processes in Zhejing Province, China, which could account for elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) and health impacts on children. We assessed the potential health risks of lead in tinfoil manufacturing and e-waste recycling areas. 329 children in total aged 11-12 who lived in a tinfoil manufacturing area (Lanxi), an e-waste recycling area (Luqiao) and a reference area (Chun'an) were studied. Lead levels in children's blood were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, serum calcium, delta-Aminolaevulinic acid (delta-ALA) and intelligence quotient (IQ) were also measured. Geometric mean of BLLs in Lanxi, Luqiao and Chun'an were 8.11 mu g/dL, 6.97 mu g/dL, and 2.78 mu g/dL respectively, with 35.1%, 38.9% and 0% of children who had BLLs above 10 mu g/dL. The BLLs in exposed areas were much higher than those in the control area. Lanxi children had higher creatinine and calcium than Chun'an children, and Luqiao children had higher delta-ALA and lower calcium than Chun'an children. No significant differences of IQ were observed between Lanxi, Luqiao and Chun'an, however a negative relationship between BLLs and IQ was shown for the study children. The results indicated that lead pollution from e-waste recycling and tinfoil processing appears to be a potential serious threat to children's health. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Incorporating field-based research into remote learning: An assessment of soil lead pollution in different land-use types in Los Angeles

Abstract:A research-based course was developed to investigate the legacy of soil lead (Pb) pollution in Los Angeles, California. During the course, undergraduate and graduate students collected a total of 270 soil samples for analyses of metal (loid) concentrations in different land-use types (residential, park, and school). Residential soils had significantly higher Pb concentrations than other land uses (p < 0.01) exceeding the California recommended safety level for soil Pb (80 mg/kg) at the highest frequency (64% of samples), followed by schools (42%) and parks (6.0%). Soil Pb from all 87 census block groups was correlated with battery recycling plant and railroad proximity as geospatial indicators of childhood Pb exposure risk. Meanwhile, census block groups with higher Pb levels were correlated with higher percentages of the following population: those without health insurance, without college degrees, with a lower median household income and income below the poverty line, and ethnic and racial minorities (r = -0.46 to 0.59, p < 0.05). Principal component regression models significantly improved soil Pb estimation over correlation analysis by incorporating sociodemographic, economic, and geospatial risk factors for Pb exposure (R2 = 0.58, p < 0.05). This work provides new insights into how topsoil Pb prevails in various land-use types and their co-occurring sociodemographic, economic, and geospatial risk factors, indicating the need for multi-scalar assessment across urban land uses.
Pollution Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils over the Past Five Years in Zhejiang, Southeast China.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this study, 1999 agricultural soil samples were collected from 11 cities in Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2020, and the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of 3 of the most important heavy metals, i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed. The results showed that Cd had a slightly higher sample over-standard rate of 12.06%. Spatial distribution and temporal trends showed that the Pb concentrations overall increased from 2016 to 2020 and mainly accumulated in southern Zhejiang. In addition, multiple exposure routes were evaluated for human health risks. Children are more susceptible to the adverse effects of heavy metals in agricultural soils, and oral ingestion was the major exposure route. Cr poses higher human health risks to humans than Pb and Cd in agricultural soils. Therefore, more rigid environmental monitoring and related soil remediation counter-measures for some sites with high concentrations of heavy metals are necessary to limit the potential threat to human health.
Linking Elevated Blood Lead Level in Urban School-Aged Children with Bioaccessible Lead in Neighborhood Soil.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) exposure is known to affect the health of children while soil Pb is an important contributor to human Pb exposure. To analyze the effects of both environmental and other factors, especially total and bioaccessible Pb in neighborhood soil, on school-aged urban children's blood lead level (BLL), 75 children (6-11 years old) were recruited from an industry city in eastern China for BLL measurement and questionnaire survey. Soil samples were collected from their living neighborhoods and measured for total and bioaccessible Pb. The mean BLL was 4.82 mu g dL(-1), with 42 out of 75 children having BLL exceeding the international guideline of 5 mu g dL(-1). Low Pb contamination was observed in soil with total Pb ranging from 12.5 to 271 mg kg(-1) (mean 34.3 mg kg(-1)). Based on the in vitro Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium (SBRC) gastric fluid extraction, bioaccessible Pb in soil ranged from 0.40 to 79.1 mg kg(-1) (mean 7.58 mg kg(-1)) with Pb bioaccessibility ranging from 1.74 to 68.1 (mean 19.9%). When BLL was correlated with total Pb in soil, insignificant linear relationship was observed (P > 0.05, correlation coefficient 95%CI = -0.047-0.40, R-2 = 0.07). However, when BLL was correlated with soil bioaccessible Pb or Pb bioaccessibility, much stronger linear relationships were observed (P < 0.01, correlation coefficient 95%CI = 0.28-0.64, R-2 = 0.16-0.20), suggesting that bioaccessible Pb was a much stronger predictor of BLL. In addition, strong associations were also observed between BLL and social factors such as house decoration, residence time, and personal habits, suggesting that both soil Pb contamination and social factors play important roles in elevating BLL for city children. Abstract:The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in soils near a lead–zinc mine located in Shangyu, Zhejiang Province, China, were determined and their toxicity was assessed using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The TCLP method is a currently recognized international method for evaluation of heavy metal pollution in soils. The available levels of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd were 8.2–36, 23–143, 6.4–1367 and 0.41–2.2 mg kg −1 , respectively, while the international standards were 15, 25, 5 and 0.5 mg kg −1 , respectively. Soils around the mine were more polluted with Zn and Pb, followed by Cd and Cu. Moreover, the levels of heavy metals in the soils extracted by TCLP indicated that extraction fluid 2 was more effective than extraction fluid 1 in extracting the heavy metals from the polluted soils and there was a positive correlation between fluids 1 and 2. Available heavy metal contents determined by TCLP were correlated with soil total heavy metal contents.

Abstract:[Objective]To investigate the current status of hazards in low lead environment work and take corresponding countermeasures. [Methods]Field occupational health investigation,physical examination and the analysis by synthesis method were adopted for evaluation. [Results]The Occupational population blood lead levels from high to low respectively were the lead smelter radiation worker highway maintenance worker the manufacturing industry worker(control group).In the low lead environment work,the blood lead average levels of radiation worker and highway maintenance worker were high,the difference with the lead smelting works and the manufacturing industry workers(P0.01). [Conclusion]The low lead environmental works represented by radiation workers and road maintenance workers should be concerned about the occupational hazards of lead.
Social and spatial distribution of soil lead concentrations in the City of Santa Ana, California: Implications for health inequities

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Lead (Pb) exposure is a problem that disproportionately impacts low-income communities and communities of color. We applied a community-based participatory research approach to assess the distribution of soil Pb concentrations and related social vulnerabilities across Census tracts in Santa Ana, CA.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Soil Pb samples (n = 1528) were collected by the <em>¡Plo-NO! Santa Ana! Lead-Free Santa Ana!</em> partnership in 2018 across Santa Ana, CA, at a high spatial resolution and measured using XRF analysis. Pb concentrations were mapped and spatial interpolation was conducted to generate a continuous smoothed map of soil Pb concentrations across the city. American Community Survey data was used to examine Pb across Census tracts based on social and economic factors, and to allow for the development of a Cumulative Risk Index to identify areas at high risk of health impacts.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Soil Pb concentrations varied by landuse type and socioeconomic factors. Census tracts with a median household income below $50,000 had over five times higher soil Pb concentrations than high-income Census tracts. Soil samples collected in tertiles with the highest percent children, residents without health insurance, renter-occupied housing units, and lowest percent college educated residents had 90.0%, 96.1%, 75.2%, and 87.0% higher Pb concentrations on average, respectively, compared to their counterparts. Overall, 52.7% of residential samples had Pb concentrations in excess of the 80 ppm California EPA recommendation, and 11 Census tracts were characterized as high risk according to our Cumulative Risk Index.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Discussion</h3><p>This study underscores the need for precautionary measures relating to disturbances of the soil, particularly for areas where children play outside, given children's higher absorption of lead. It also informs environmental justice initiatives and identifies vulnerable subpopulations at greater risk of Pb exposure, thus warranting community-driven recommendations for policies and initiatives to remediate soil Pb and protect public health and health equity.</p>

Abstract:[Objective]To investigate the leyels of lead,cadmium and copper in blood and urine samples among residents in an electronic waste recycling site as well as frequencies of micronucleated binucleated cells in those subjects.[Methods]We recruited a total of 138 subjects,of which 58 subjects(44 for male,14 for female)with average age of 33.0 years,from the e-waste recycling site(exposed group)and 80 farmers(41for male,39 for female)with average age of 43.7 years,from a village that located 50km away from the recycling site without known industrial pollution sources(control group).Levels of lead,cadmium and copper in blood and urine were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy,and frequencies of micronucleated binucleated cells (MNed BNC) in peripheral blood lymphocyte were measured by cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus assay.[Results]In the exposure group,median levels were 0.52μmol/L for the blood lead and 51.97μmol/mmol creatininc for urinary copper,which were significant higher than those of the control group (median:0.45μmol/L;median:45.69μmol/mmol creatinine,P0.01).The frequencies of MNed BNC among subjects from the exposed group(median:4‰)were higher than those of the controls(median:1‰,P0.01).Additionally,we found that the blood cadmium level may be interfered with age(P0.01).The occupational history of performing e-waste may be a risk factor of the elevated blood lead level (OR=2.9,P0.05).[Conclusion]The findings suggested that the subjects who lived in the e-waste recycling site had higher levels of blood lead,urinary copper and the MNed BNC frequencies,compared with the controls.
The Bioavailability and Adverse Impacts of Lead and Decabromodiphenyl Ether on Soil Microbial Activities

Abstract:Lead (Pb) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) are the main pollutants at electronic waste (e-waste) recycling sites (EWRSs), and their potential toxic effects on soil organisms have received extensive attention. However, the impact on soil microorganisms of joint exposure to the two chemicals remains almost unknown. Therefore, indoor incubation tests were performed to explore the adverse impacts of Pb and BDE209 on soil microbial activities and chemical transformation for the first time. The results have demonstrated that BDE209 was barely degraded in all treated groups, indicating that the presence of Pb hardly affected BDE209 dissipation. The fractions analysis according to Tessier suggested that Pb gradually transformed towards more stable fractions in the slightly alkaline soil, thus reducing the bioavailability of Pb. Additionally, increased Pb doses caused significantly higher bioavailability (p < 0.05), and the same trend was clearly observed after simultaneous exposure to BDE209. Generally, single Pb or BDE209 exposure markedly inhibited (p < 0.05 or 0.01) soil microbial biomass C (C mic), while soil basal respiration (SBR) indicated the opposite response trend (inhibition or stimulation for BDE209 or Pb alone, respectively). Compared to the controls, Pb dramatically (p < 0.01) facilitated soil metabolic quotient (qCO2) during the incubation period. After joint exposure to Pb and BDE209, C mic generally declined with increasing exposure concentration, following certain dose-response relationships. However, SBR and qCO2 were highly significantly stimulated (p < 0.01), and more doses of Pb and BDE209 resulted in higher values. The results of these observations have provided a basic understanding of the potential ecological risk of Pb and BDE209 in soil at EWRSs.
Superfund Cleanups and Children's Lead Exposure

Abstract:This study evaluates the effect of EPA's Superfund cleanup program on children's lead exposure. We linked two decades of blood lead level (BLL) measurements from children in six states with data on Superfund sites and other lead risk factors. We used quasi-experimental methods to identify the causal effect of proximity to Superfund cleanups on rates of elevated BLL. We estimated a difference-in-difference model comparing the change in elevated BLL of children closer to versus farther from lead-contaminated sites before, during, and after cleanup. We also estimated a triple difference model including children near hazardous sites with minimal to no lead contamination as a comparison group. We used spatial fixed effects and matching to minimize potential bias from unobserved differences between the treatment and comparison groups. Results indicate that Superfund cleanups lowered the risk of elevated BLL for children living within 2 kilometers of lead-contaminated sites 13 to 26 percent.

Abstract:The instant endeavor was undertaken for determination of lead (Pb) in water, soil, forage, and cow’s blood domesticated in contaminated area of heavy automobiles’ exhaust in Sahiwal town of District Sargodha, Pakistan. Water samples showed that the concentration of Pb ranged from 1.14 to 0.44 mg kg−1 at all sites. It was maximum at site 5 and minimum at site 2. Soil samples showed the concentration of Pb at all sites ranged from 1.58 to 0.279 mg kg−1. It was maximum in soil where Avena sativa was grown at site 5 and was found minimum in soil where Zea mays was grown at site 2. While among samples of forage, the concentration of Pb ranges from 0.048 to 2.002 mg kg−1. The highest Pb amount was found in Brassica campestris at site 1 and the minimum was recorded in Trifolium alexandrinum at site 2. Finally, the blood samples of cow depicted that concentration of Pb ranged from 4.468 to 0.217 mg kg−1. It was the maximum at site 1 and the minimum at site 3. It is recommended that such study should be conducted in other districts for public awareness.
Soil heavy metal contamination in residential neighborhoods in post-industrial cities and its potential human exposure risk

Abstract:This study assessed the extent of potential human risk to heavy metal exposure by comparing concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in soil in 43 vacant lots in two low income neighborhoods, Hough (Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio) and Weinland Park (Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio) in USA to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Soil Screening Levels (SSLs) and to regional background concentrations. At least one soil sample in all the lots in Weinland Park and 27 out of 28 (96%) of the lots in Hough exceeded the natural background concentration of Pb in Franklin (14 to 25 mg/kg soil) and Cuyahoga (56 to 136 mg/kg soil) counties, respectively. When compared to the USEPA’s SSL for Pb for human ingestion of soil, soil from only 1 out of 15 (6.6%) lots in Weinland Park and 15 out of 28 (54%) in Hough neighborhood exceeded the SSL of 400 mg Pb/kg soil. All sites in both neighborhoods exceeded the SSL for As (0.4 mg/kg soil); however only 1 lot (6.6%) in Weinland Park and 3 (11%) in Hough exceeded the background concentrations of As in Franklin (9 to 33 mg/kg soil) and Cuyahoga (5 to 20 mg/kg soil) counties. Thirteen (86%) lots in Weinland Park and 25 (89%) in Hough had soil Zn concentration higher than the background in Franklin County (71 to 177 mg/kg soil) and Cuyahoga County (56 to 137 mg/kg soil) respectively, however they were all within the SSL of 23,000 mg Zn/kg soil. Significant correlations were observed within metals, soil properties, and between metals and soil properties including texture, moisture, pH, organic matter and active carbon suggesting unique associations in the two neighborhoods. Results indicate that Pb is a metal of concern in 54% of the vacant lots in Hough neighborhood. The study highlights the need for comparing vacant lot heavy metal concentrations to both USEPA’s SSLs and natural background concentrations in the area for establishing safety of a lot prior to its use for urban agriculture.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollutants resulting from human activities consistently move from the topsoil to the subsoil profiles under the influence of rainfall leaching. This study intends to predict the long-term transport of heavy metals at an abandoned e-waste recycling site with respect to historical pollution activities, land use, and metal pollutant dynamics. Our results showed that the site was seriously contaminated with heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in the soil profiles. More specifically, Cu and Zn accumulated primarily in the upper layers of the soil profile owing to their weak mobility, while significant migration of Cd and Pb was observed in the deeper soil layers. Furthermore, to clarify the fate of Pb in soil profiles, Pb isotopes and the Hydrus model were used to trace the sources of Pb contamination and predict its long-term distribution. The Pb isotope results suggest that past e-waste recycling activities significantly contributed to the heavy metal concentration in the soil profiles; however, other anthropogenic sources such as vehicle exhaust had smaller impacts. Moreover, our model findings predicted that within the next 30 years, 60% of Pb contaminants will be concentrated in the surface soil. Together these results provide a theoretical foundation and scientific basis for evaluating, controlling, and remediating abandoned e-waste recycling sites.
[Impact of Newly Build Lead-Acid Battery Agglomeration Area on the Surrounding Soil Environment: A Study Based on the Spatial Characteristics of Heavy Metals].

Abstract:To determine whether the newly built lead-acid battery agglomeration area in a town in northern Zhejiang had an impact on the surrounding soil environment after seven years of operation, 76 samples of surface soil around the lead-acid battery concentration area were collected, and the contents of Hg, As, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr in the soil were determined. Based on the spatial distance of the agglomeration area and 50, 450, and 850 m from the agglomeration area boundary, the soil environmental quality was evaluated using the single factor index, Nemerow comprehensive pollution index, and potential ecological risk index methods. The spatial distribution characteristics of the heavy metals were analyzed using the geostatistical method, and the sources of heavy metals affecting the soil environment were determined by correlation analysis. The results showed that the average contents of Hg, Zn, and Pb in eight heavy metals were higher than their corresponding background values at all spatial scales. The average Cd content in spatial scales other than the agglomeration area was larger than its background value. Only As at 50 m was greater than its background value, whereas the average content of other elements at all spatial distances was lower than their corresponding background values. The spatial variability was high for Hg and Cd but not obvious for other elements. This implies that the influence of regional activities was concentrated mainly on Hg and Cd; the content of both increased with distance from the agglomeration area. Hg and Cd exceeded the risk screening values and were distributed mainly at 450 m and 850 m; 33.33% and 38.89% Hg points and 27.78% and 55.56% Cd points were observed at these distances, respectively. The spatial distribution characteristics of Hg and Cd were consistent with their contents; only Zn and Pb had scattered points that exceeded the risk screening values and generally no obvious spatial distribution characteristics. According to the risk analysis of soil comprehensive pollution caused by the eight heavy metals, Cd was the main source of soil comprehensive pollution risk at a contribution rate of 36.73%, which caused the soil at 850 m to be in a state of alert. Soil ecological risk at a medium level occurred mainly at 450 m and 850 m outside the agglomeration area from Hg and Cd. The contribution rates to the soil quality at these distances were 46.30% and 39.37% for Hg and 38.98% and 49.30% for Cd, respectively. This indicates that regional activities caused Hg and Cd to be the main elements affecting soil quality in the study area. The results of geostatistics and multivariate statistical analysis showed that Hg and Cd were diffused inward from the periphery of the agglomeration area on the axis of the local main wind direction (northeast-southwest), and the main sources of both were coal-burning activities of enterprises in the periphery of the agglomeration area. In summary, the newly build lead-acid battery agglomeration area has not significantly affected the accumulation of heavy metals in the agglomeration area and in the surrounding soil after seven years of operation.
Soil lead, zinc, and copper in two urban forests as influenced by highway proximity

Abstract:Heavy metals emitted by vehicles have the potential to accumulate in soil near roadways, threatening the health of soil, plants, animals, and humans. This study evaluates Pb, Zn, and Cu levels in forest O-horizons, mineral soil, and earthworms near busy roadways in the metro-Washington, DC area. The study sites comprised road-edge environments within urban parks. Six transects were sampled in each park, collecting mineral soil at 1- to 30-m distances from the road edge and dividing it into eight depth increments (0-30 cm). O-horizon plant litter and earthworm samples were also collected at these locations. All samples underwent total Pb, Zn, and Cu X-ray fluorescence analysis. Generally, Pb concentrations (in upper 0-10 cm) were 1-4.8 times higher at 3 m compared to 30 m from the road, with less consistent gradients for Zn and Cu. Concentrations peaked near the soil surface, with lower levels in the O-horizon above and deeper soil layers. Leaded vehicle fuel was phased out by the early 1980s, but legacy Pb contamination persisted in roadside forests, averaging 365 mg kg-1 in the upper 10 cm within 3 m of the roadway (< EPA action level of 1200 mg kg-1 for non-play areas). Zinc, often present in vehicle tires, accumulated in earthworms to 192-592 mg kg-1, concentrations exceeding those in the soil, while Pb and Cu were less concentrated in earthworms than in either O-horizon or mineral soil. Factors such as plant uptake, erosion, wind, soil texture, and metal solubility influence how heavy metals redistribute and bioaccumulate in the O-horizon, mineral soil, and soil fauna.

Abstract:Historical and contemporary use of lead (Pb) in gasoline, paints, and industry have led to its concentration in urban soils, presenting a human health risk, with disproportionate impacts on children living in urban areas. Contaminated soil is one of the major contributors to child Pb exposure. While many residents practicing urban agriculture have their soil tested to determine the amount of soil total Pb present, this measure does not provide a direct indicator of soil Pb bioaccessibility (used to predict bioavailability). Because bioavailability is ultimately necessary to determine the exposure risk, we aimed to gain a more refined understanding of Pb risk using soil measurements commonly obtained by means of the common agricultural soil tests. Accordingly, we sampled soils from 142 residential parcels located in Detroit, MI. Soils were evaluated for: pH, organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium and total and in-vitro bioaccessible (IVBA) Pb. Detroit soil IVBA Pb ranged from 4.5% to 81%, with a mean of 39%. Total Pb, organic matter (OM) content and soil pH were found to be the most important predictors of Pb bioaccessibility. Soils typically had a relatively low OM content (mean of 5%) however, samples with higher OM content had lower IVBA (e.g., the IVBA was 15.2% smaller in soils with 7.5% OM). Soils were typically slightly basic (mean of 7.8); however, samples with pH closer to neutral had lower IVBA (e.g., the IVBA was 11.6% smaller in soils with a pH of 7.3). The proximity of soil sampling locations to former smelter locations was also found to influence Pb bioaccessibility, with samples closer to former Pb smelter sites having a somewhat higher average IVBA. Results suggest increasing soil OM content in urban soils will reduce Pb bioaccessibility. Building soil OM would therefore improve both soil fertility and decrease soil Pb bioaccessibility, imparting a predicted decrease in exposure risks.

Abstract:Despite great progress in reducing environmental lead (Pb) levels, many children in the United States are still being exposed. Our aim was to develop a generalizable approach for systematically identifying, verifying, and analyzing locations with high prevalence of children's elevated blood Pb levels (EBLLs) and to assess available Pb models/indices as surrogates, using a Michigan case study. We obtained BLL test results of children of age in Michigan from 2006-2016; we then evaluated them for data representativeness by comparing two percentage EBLL (%EBLL) rates (number of children tested with EBLL divided by both number of children tested and total population). We analyzed %EBLLs across census tracts over three time periods and between two EBLL reference values ( vs. ) to evaluate consistency. Locations with high %EBLLs were identified by a top 20 percentile method and a Getis-Ord Gi* geospatial cluster "hotspot" analysis. For the locations identified, we analyzed convergences with three available Pb exposure models/indices based on old housing and sociodemographics. Analyses of 2014-2016 %EBLL data identified 11 Michigan locations via cluster analysis and 80 additional locations via the top 20 percentile method and their associated census tracts. Data representativeness and consistency were supported by a 0.93 correlation coefficient between the two EBLL rates over 11 y, and a Kappa score of of %EBLL hotspots across the time periods (2014-2016) and reference values. Many EBLL hotspot locations converge with current Pb exposure models/indices; others diverge, suggesting additional Pb sources for targeted interventions. This analysis confirmed known Pb hotspot locations and revealed new ones at a finer geographic resolution than previously available, using advanced geospatial statistical methods and mapping/visualization. It also assessed the utility of surrogates in the absence of blood Pb data. Abstract:Cement production is a major source of metals and metalloids in the environment, while exposures to metals and metalloids may impact human health in the surrounding communities. We recruited 185 participants living in the vicinity of a cement plant in the northeast U.S., and measured the levels of aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and selenium (Se) in blood and Hg in hair samples from them. A questionnaire was used to assess potential sources of Hg exposure. Multivariate regressions and spatial analyses were performed to evaluate the relative importance of different routes of exposures. The metal concentrations in blood or hair samples of our study participants were comparable to the U.S. general or regional population. Smoking contributed significantly to Cd and Pb exposures, and seafood consumption contributed significantly to Hg and As exposures, while variables related to the cement plant were not significantly associated with metal concentrations. Our results suggest that our study population was not at elevated health risk due to metal exposures, and that the contribution of the cement plant to metal exposures in the surrounding community was minimal.

Abstract:Human health risk assessment increasingly recognizes the need to integrate participatory-based research, geospatial analysis, and environmental epidemiology, particularly to address contamination concerns in underserved and disadvantaged communities. Here, we demonstrate the combined application of such methods within the Greater Fifth Ward neighborhood in Northeast Houston. In particular, in tandem with community members, we collected soil samples from 193 residential sites using a complete canvassing method from July to November 2021 to characterize contaminant concentrations, focusing on heavy metals and metalloids As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, Se, Ag, and Hg measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. Individual heavy metals as well as cumulative cancer and non-cancer risks were calculated for children and adults using the USEPA Regional Soil Screening Levels and benchmarks for specific land uses, such as crop growing. Soils from most sites had low or typical background levels expected in urban areas, but samples from several locations had significantly elevated lead levels (>1200 mg/kg) that warrant additional examination. Geospatial analysis suggested clustering of heavy metal contaminants within one geographic area of the neighborhood. This study highlights how participatory research in underserved environmental justice communities can help characterize current conditions as well as establish priorities for future investigation.

Abstract:As a highly toxic heavy metal, the pollution and exposure risks of lead are of widespread concern for human health. However, the collection of blood samples for use as an indicator of lead pollution is not always feasible in most cohort or longitudinal studies, especially those involving children health. To evaluate the potential use of urinary lead as an indicator of exposure levels and source apportionment, accompanying with environmental media samples, lead concentrations and isotopic measurements (expressed as (207)Pb/(206)Pb, (208)Pb/(206)Pb and (204)Pb/(206)Pb) were investigated and compared between blood and urine from children living in the vicinities of a typical coking plant and lead-acid battery factory. The results showed urinary lead might not be a preferable proxy for estimating blood lead levels. Fortunately, urinary lead isotopic measurements could be used as an alternative for identifying the sources of children's lead exposure, which coincided well with the blood lead isotope ratio analysis.
