Abstract:The primary inversion of the accurately measured frequencies of solar oscillations determines the mechanical properties of the Sun, i.e., the sound speed and density as a function of solar radius. In order to infer the temperature and hydrogen abundance profiles inside the Sun, it becomes necessary to use, in addition, the equations of thermal equilibrium along with the input physics, such as opacities, equation of state and nuclear reaction rates. It then becomes possible to estimate the effects of uncertainties in opacity and nuclear reaction rates on the inferred thermal and composition profiles. The seismically determined temperature and hydrogen abundance profiles turn out to be close to those in a standard evolutionary solar model that includes the diffusion of helium and heavy elements below the convection zone. The most significant departure occurs just below the base of the convection zone where the inferred hydrogen abundance profile is smoother than that in a standard diffusion model. The region just beneath the solar convection zone appears to be mixed, a process which could account for the observed low lithium abundance in the solar envelope. With a reasonable allowance for errors in opacities, the helioseismically estimated cross-section for pp nuclear reaction rate turns out to be (4.15+/-0.25)*1.E-25 MeV barns.

Abstract:The ionization level and free electron density of most abundant elements (C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, S, and Fe) in the sun are calculated from the centre of the sun to the surface of the photosphere. The model and computations are made under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The Saha equation has been used to calculate the ionization level of elements and the electron density. Temperature values for calculations along the solar radius are taken from references.

Abstract:Helioseismology puts strong constraints on the internal sound speed and on the rotation profile in the radiative zone. Young stars of solar type are more active and faster rotators than the Sun. So we begin to build models which include different rotation histories and compare the results with all the solar observations. The profiles of the rotation we get have interesting consequence for the introduction of magnetic field in the radiative zone. We discuss also the impact of mass loss deduced from measured flux of young stars. We deduce from these comparisons some quantitative effect of the dynamical processes (rotation, magnetic field and mass loss) of these early stages on the present sound speed and density. We show finally how we can improve our present knowledge of the radiative zone with PICARD and GOLFNG.

Abstract:A model-independent reconstruction of mechanical profiles (density, pressure) of the solar interior is outlined using the adiabatic sound speed and bouyancy frequency profiles. These can be inferred from helioseismology if both p- and g-mode frequencies are measured. A simulated reconstruction is presented using a solar model bouyancy frequency and available sound speed data.

Abstract:On its journey through the Galaxy, the Sun passes through diverse regions of the interstellar medium. High-resolution spectroscopic measurements of interstellar absorption lines in spectra of nearby stars show absorption components from more than a dozen warm partially ionized clouds within 15 pc of the Sun. The two nearest clouds—the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC) and Galactic (G) cloud—move toward each other. Their bulk heliocentric velocities can be compared with the interstellar neutral helium flow velocity obtained from space-based experiments. We combine recent results from Ulysses, IBEX, and STEREO observations to find a more accurate estimate of the velocity and temperature of the very local interstellar medium. We find that, contrary to the widespread viewpoint that the Sun resides inside the LIC, the locally observed velocity of the interstellar neutral helium is consistent with a linear combination of the velocities of the LIC and G cloud, but not with either of these two velocities. This finding shows that the Sun travels through a mixed-cloud interstellar medium composed of material from both these clouds. Interactions between these clouds explain the substantially higher density of the interstellar hydrogen near the Sun and toward stars located within the interaction region of these two clouds. The observed asymmetry of the interstellar helium distribution function also supports this interaction. The structure and equilibrium in this region require further studies using in situ and telescopic observations.

Abstract:The magnetic processes associated with the non-thermal broadening of optically thin emission lines appear to carry enough energy to heat the corona and accelerate the solar wind. We investigate whether non-thermal motions in cool stars exhibit the same behaviour as on the Sun by analysing archival stellar spectra taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, and full-disc Solar spectra taken by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. We determined the non-thermal velocities by measuring the excess broadening in optically thin emission lines formed in the stellar atmosphere; the chromosphere, the transition region and the corona. Assuming the non-thermal broadening is caused by the presence of Alfvén waves, we also determined the associated wave energy densities. Our results show that, with a non-thermal velocity of $\sim$23 kms$^{-1}$ the Sun-as-a-star results are in very good agreement with values obtained from spatially-resolved solar observations. The non-thermal broadening in our sample show correlation to stellar rotation, with the strength of the non-thermal velocity decreasing with decreasing rotation rate. Finally, the non-thermal velocity in cool Sun-like stars varies with atmospheric height or temperature of the emission lines, and peaks at transition region temperatures. This points towards a solar-like Alfvén wave driven heating in stellar atmospheres. However, the peak is at a lower temperature in some cool stars suggesting that, other magnetic process such as flaring events could also dominate.

Abstract:Determining the He/H ratio in cool stars presents a fundamental astrophysical challenge. While this ratio is established for hot O and B stars, its extrapolation to cool stars remains uncertain due to the absence of helium lines in their observed spectra. We address this knowledge gap by focusing on the Sun as a representative cool star. We conduct spectroscopic analyses of the observed solar photospheric lines by utilizing a combination of MgH molecular lines and neutral Mg atomic lines including yet another combination of CH and C_2 molecular lines with neutral C atomic lines. Our spectroscopic analyses were further exploited by adopting solar model atmospheres constructed for distinct He/H ratios to determine the solar photospheric helium abundance. The helium abundance is determined by enforcing the fact that for an adopted model atmosphere with an appropriate He/H ratio, the derived Mg abundance from the neutral Mg atomic lines and that from the MgH molecular lines must be the same. Ditto holds for the C abundance derived from neutral C atomic lines and that from CH lines of the CH molecular band and C_2 lines from the C_2 Swan band. The estimated He/H ratio for the Sun is discussed based on the one-dimensional local thermodynamic equilibrium (1D LTE) model atmosphere. The helium abundance (He/H = 0.091(+0.019/+0.014)) obtained for the Sun serves as a critical reference point to characterize the He/H ratio of cool stars across the range in their effective temperature. Using this derived He/H ratio, the solar mass fractions are determined to be X_sun=0.7232(+0.0305/-0.0377), Y_sun=0.2633(+0.0384/-0.0311), and Z_sun=0.0135(+0.0006/-0.0007).

The acoustic size of the Sun

Abstract:Analysis of f-mode frequencies has provided a measure of the radius of the Sun which is lower, by a few hundredths per cent, than the photospheric radius determined by direct optical measurement. Part of this difference can be understood by recognizing that it is primarily the variation of density well beneath the photosphere of the star that determines the structure of these essentially adiabatic oscillation modes, not some aspect of radiative intensity. In this paper we attempt to shed further light on the matter, by considering a differently defined, and dynamically more robust, seismic radius, namely one determined from p-mode frequencies. This radius is calibrated by the distance from the centre of the Sun to the position in the subphotospheric layers where the first derivative of the density scale height changes essentially discontinuously. We find that that radius is more- or-less consistent with what is suggested by the f modes. In addition, the interpretation of the radius inferred from p modes leads us to understand more deeply the role of the total mass constraint in the structure inversions. This enables us to reinterpret the sound-speed inversion, suggesting that the positions of the photosphere and the adiabatically stratified layers in the convective envelope differ nonhomologously from those of the standard solar model.

Abstract:Measurements of oscillation frequencies of the Sun and stars can provide important independent constraints on their internal structure and dynamics. Seismic models of these oscillations are used to connect structure and rotation of the star to its resonant frequencies, which are then compared with observations, the goal being that of minimizing the difference between the two. Even in the case of the Sun, for which structure models are highly tuned, observed frequencies show systematic deviations from modeled frequencies, a phenomenon referred to as the "surface term." The dominant source of this systematic effect is thought to be vigorous near-surface convection, which is not well accounted for in both stellar modeling and mode-oscillation physics. Here we bring to bear the method of homogenization, applicable in the asymptotic limit of large wavelengths (in comparison to the correlation scale of convection), to characterize the effect of small-scale surface convection on resonant-mode frequencies in the Sun. We show that the full oscillation equations, in the presence of temporally stationary 3-D flows, can be reduced to an effective "quiet-Sun" wave equation with altered sound speed, Brünt--Väisäla frequency and Lamb frequency. We derive the modified equation and relations for the appropriate averaging of three dimensional flows and thermal quantities to obtain the properties of this effective medium. Using flows obtained from three dimensional numerical simulations of near-surface convection, we quantify their effect on solar oscillation frequencies, and find that they are shifted systematically and substantially. We argue therefore that consistent interpretations of resonant frequencies must include modifications to the wave equation that effectively capture the impact of vigorous hydrodynamic convection.

The $^7$Be Solar Neutrino Line: A Reflection of the Central Temperature Distribution of the Sun

Abstract:A precise test of the theory of stellar evolution can be performed by measuring the average difference in energy between the neutrino line produced by ${\rm ^7Be}$ electron capture in the solar interior and the corresponding neutrino line produced in a terrestrial laboratory. This energy shift is calculated to be 1.29~keV (to an accuracy of a few percent) for the dominant ground-state to ground-state transition. The energy shift is approximately equal to the average temperature of the solar core, computed by integrating the temperature over the solar interior with a weighting factor equal to the locally-produced $^7$Be neutrino emission. The characteristic modulation of the ${\rm ^7Be}$ line shape that would be caused by either vacuum neutrino oscillations or by matter-enhanced (MSW) neutrino oscillations is shown to be small. Other frequently-discussed weak interaction solutions to the solar neutrino problem are also not expected to change significantly the line profile. Therefore, a measurement of the energy shift is a measurement of the central temperature distribution of the sun.
On the Temperatures of Planetary Magnetosheaths at the Subsolar Points

Abstract:This research explores the relationship between the temperatures of the solar corona and planetary magnetosheaths. Based on the second law of thermodynamics, the maximum temperature of the planetary magnetosheaths cannot exceed that of the solar corona. A theoretical investigation is presented into the expansion of the solar corona, the propagation of solar wind, and the compression of planetary magnetosheaths by bow shocks. The method used is general and fits the dynamics of multiple components, thermal anisotropy, and non-Maxwellian plasmas in the steady state, and approximate formulas are obtained. The results indicate that, for the steady state, planetary magnetosheaths at the subsolar points in the solar system have approach peak mean temperatures. Second, a systematic statistical survey of the average temperature of the planetary magnetosheaths is presented and shows that the average plasma temperature of the subsolar point magnetosheaths of Earth and Saturn are 206 eV (2.39 MK) and 171 eV (1.98 MK), respectively, which are close to that of the corona. The statistical results are consistent with the theoretical estimations. These results are of significant use for estimating the thermal properties of the planetary magnetospheres.

Abstract:Two finite volume methods are derived and applied to the solution of problems of incompressible flow. In particular, external inviscid flows and boundary-layer flows are examined. The firstmethod analyzed is a cell-centered finite volume scheme. It is shown to be formally first order accurate on equilateral triangles and used to calculate inviscid flow over an airfoil. The second method is a vertex-centered least-squares method and is second order accurate. It's quality is investigated for several types of inviscid flow problems and to solve Prandtl's boundary-layer equations over a flat plate. Future improvements and extensions of the method are discussed.

Abstract:Quantitative data on the solar wind, solar magnetic fields, solar eruptions, solar neutrinos, and on the planetary material orbiting the Sun all indicate the presence of an iron-rich solar interior and a neutron star at the core of the Sun. Solar magnetic fields are deep-seated remnants from the core and/or Bose-Einstein condensation of Fe-rich material into a rotating superconductor. Neutron emission from the core triggers a series of reactions that produce solar luminosity, the H carrier gas that maintains mass separation in the Sun, and an outpouring of 3 E43 H+ ions per year in the solar wind.

Abstract:We analyse the temperature anisotropy of the protons in the solar wind and thereby concentrate on plasma data obtained in the year 1976 of the Helios 1 and Helios 2 missions. We derive the core proton temperatures and , in the directions perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field, as well as the core parallel plasma beta, . The data are separately analysed for two distance ranges, AU and AU, and divided into 24 bins for the plasma beta, in the range from to , and into 72 bins for the total temperature anisotropy, , which is here considered in the range from −0.9 to 0.9. The number of spectra in each bin is determined to obtain distributions. The statistical results are presented in two-dimensional histograms. For each column we define a critical upper and lower limit of the anisotropy. The resulting empirical points are compared with the known theoretical instability thresholds. The protons are found to come with increasing radial distance closer to the fire-hose instability threshold.
Temperature inversion in a gravitationally bound plasma: Case of the solar corona

Abstract:The temperature of the solar atmosphere increases from thousands to millions of degrees moving from the lower layer (chromosphere) to the outermost one (corona), while the density drops accordingly. The mechanism behind this phenomenon, known as a temperature inversion, is still unknown. In this work, we model a coronal loop as a collisionless plasma confined in a semicircular tube that is subject to the Sun's gravity and in thermal contact with a fully collisional chromosphere behaving as a thermostat at the loop's feet. By using kinetic $N$-particle simulations and analytical calculations, we show that rapid, intermittent, and short-lived heating events in the chromosphere drive the coronal plasma towards a non-equilibrium stationary state. The latter is characterized by suprathermal tails in the particles' velocity distribution functions, exhibiting temperature and density profiles strikingly similar to those observed in the atmosphere of the Sun. These results suggest that a million-Kelvin solar corona can be produced without the local deposition of heat in the upper layer of the atmosphere that is typically assumed by standard approaches. We find that suprathermal distribution functions in the corona are self-consistently produced instead of postulated a priori, in contrast to classical kinetic models based on a velocity filtration mechanism.

Abstract:The proximity of the Sun to the Earth allows detailed, spatially-resolved observations. The complexity of the solar atmosphere has not ceased to surprise us ever since the telescope, and in particular the spectrograph, has been used to observe the Sun. Details show up down to scales below an arc- second, while future high-resolution telescopes probably hold more surprises in store. Not only the high degree of structuring is surprising, but also the high temperature of the outer atmosphere (i.e. everything above the photosphere), reaching values in excess of 106K in the outermost regions. The atmospheric plasma is evidently non-radiatively heated by the dissipation of energy which is being delivered either actively or passively (or both) to the outer layers by the complex magnetic field which at the same time serves to confine the heated plasma. Observers structured the confusion contained in the observed phenomena by introducing names: chromosphere, coronal mass ejection, ephemeral region, facula, flare, granule, network, plage, pore, prominence, spicule, spot, umbra,… The list of terms is a long one indeed with new ones still being added. Continued observations revealed the solar cycle with its associated “butterfly diagram,” the differential rotation, etc. Observations of the “objects” which are described by these terms create the mental framework within which solar physicists communicate.

Abstract:The temperatures of some highly charged ions in the southern solar polar coronal hole are determined from the widths of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lines measured by the SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) instrument on SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory). Radiation from both light ions, such as Ne6+, Ne7+, Mg7+, Mg9+, Si6+, and Si7+, and heavy ions, such as Fe9+, Fe10+, and Fe11+, are recorded in off-limb observations. We refer here to the limb as the height, h0, where the limb brightening of the N IV 765 Å line maximizes. After correction of the measured line widths for instrument contributions, the intrinsic widths of these emission lines are derived. These are produced by thermal motions of the ions and turbulent wave motions of the background plasma. Since the turbulent line broadening should be the same for all the different ions, its upper limit can be determined from the widths of the iron lines, assuming zero iron temperatures. Thus, the range of kinetic temperatures permitted for the light species can be delimited. For example, the average temperature of Ne7+, at heights above the southern limb relative to h0 from 17'' to 64'', ranges between 1.3 and 5 × 106 K, and the average temperature of Ne6+ ranges between 1 and 4 × 106 K. The interpretation of these measurements does not require knowledge of the ion formation (or electron) temperature. It is also found that the ion thermal speed decreases with increasing mass per charge, while the ion temperature remains roughly constant. In another observation at heights from 167'' to 183'' above h0, the temperature of the ions increases slightly with increasing mass per charge, while the thermal speed reveals no clear trend. The upper limits of the turbulence amplitude, ⟨δv2⟩1/2, derived for these two altitude ranges are 33-37 and 44 km s-1, respectively. The implications of these results for the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind are discussed.

Abstract:The solar atmosphere shows anomalous variation in temperature, starting from the 5500 K photosphere to the million-degree Kelvin corona. The corona itself expands into the interstellar medium as the free streaming solar wind, which modulates and impacts the near-Earth space weather. The precise source regions of different structures in the solar wind, their formation height, and the heating of the solar atmosphere are inextricably linked and unsolved problems in astrophysics. Observations suggest correlations between Coronal holes (CHs), which are cool, intensity deficit structures in the solar corona, with structures in the solar wind. Observations also suggest the local plasma heating in the corona through power-law distributed impulsive events. In this thesis, we use narrowband photometric, spectroscopic, and disc-integrated emission of the solar atmosphere ranging from Near Ultraviolet to X-rays along with in-situ solar wind measurements to understand (i). the source regions of the solar wind, (ii). the underlying mechanism of solar coronal heating, and (iii). the differentiation in dynamics of CHs with the background Quiet Sun (QS) regions, which do not show any significant signature of the solar wind. We leverage machine learning and numerical modeling tools to develop solar wind forecasting codes using interpretable AI, inversion codes to infer the properties of impulsive events and to understand the differences in the thermodynamics of CHs and QS regions. We finally present a unified scenario of solar wind emergence and heating in the solar atmosphere and discuss the implications of inferences from this thesis.

Abstract:The proton temperature data from the Helios 1 and Helios 2 primary missions (1975-1976) have been analyzed to establish spectral characteristics of temperature fluctuations in the inner solar wind and their relation to the large-scale morphology of the stream structure. It is found that the temperature spectra in high- and low-speed winds are very different. In the low-frequency range (2.10(-5)-3.10(-4)Hz), the spectral slopes obtained from least-squares fits are near to -5/3 (with large standard deviations) for different solar wind velocities, whereby the observed spectrum densities are higher in low-speed than in high-speed wind. In the high-frequency range (5.10(-4)-2.10(-3)Hz), the absolute values of the slopes are found to decrease with increasing solar wind velocities. Possible mechanisms for the generation of temperature fluctuations in the solar wind are discussed.
