Paradoxes before the paradox: surface gravity and the information loss problem

Abstract:The information loss paradox is widely regarded as one of the biggest open problems in theoretical physics. Several classical and quantum features must be present to enable its formulation. First, an event horizon is needed to justify the objective status of tracing out degrees of freedom inside the black hole. Second, evaporation must be completed (or nearly completed) in finite time according to a distant observer, and thus the formation of the black hole should also occur in finite time. In spherical symmetry these requirements constrain the possible metrics strongly enough to obtain a unique black hole formation scenario and match their parameters with the semiclassical results. However, the two principal generalizations of surface gravity, the quantity that determines the Hawking temperature, do not agree with each other on the dynamical background. Neither can correspond to the emission of nearly-thermal radiation. We infer from this that the information loss problem cannot be consistently posed in its standard form.

Abstract: A recent article by Mathur attempts a "precise formulation" for the paradox of black hole information loss [S. D. Mathur, arXiv:1108.0302v2 (hep-th)]. We point out that a key component of the above work, which refers to entangled pairs inside and outside of the horizon and their associated entropy gain or information loss during black hole evaporation, is a presumptuous false outcome not backed by the very foundation of physics. The very foundation of Mathur's above work is thus incorrect. We further show that within the framework of Hawking radiation as tunneling the so-called small corrections are sufficient to resolve the information loss problem.

Abstract:Unlike black hole thermodynamics, the fluid-gravity correspondence of a generic null surface appears to be ``incomplete''; though both approaches point to the emergent nature of gravitation. In the existing formulation of fluid-gravity correspondence of a null surface, we have only the momentum conservation relation in the form of the Damour-Navier-Stokes (DNS) equation. The other relations, such as the energy conservation relation, continuity relation, etc., are almost non-existent and are discussed sporadically in literature for stretched horizons. Furthermore, the fluid-gravity correspondence is not formulated from a suitable energy-momentum tensor in the conventional manner. In the paper, we address these issues. By giving the energy conservation relation, we improve the fluid-gravity analogy on a generic null hypersurface. Additionally, by introducing a suitable energy-momentum tensor, which forms the basis of the entire fluid description, we formulate the entire fluid description of the null surface. Moreover, we provide the expression of continuity relation in the context of fluid-gravity correspondence. The entire analysis has been done for a generic null surface, which differs from the existing stretched horizon approach and, thereby, expands the scope of applicability for any arbitrary null surface.

Abstract:Surface gravity plays a pivotal role in the characterization of black holes and also in formulating the laws of black hole thermodynamics. Despite its significance, defining surface gravity in general spacetimes is a nontrivial task and thus has multiple definitions that lack equivalence in dynamical scenarios. This paper reviews different notions of dynamical surface gravity and then proposes a new definition based on tidal acceleration, which is an alternative way of characterizing spacetime curvature. By integrating tidal acceleration from the horizon to infinity, we could retrieve surface gravity in familiar situations of Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. We outline a generic procedure for calculating surface gravity and substantiate our proposal by investigating the surface gravity of stationary spacetimes and reproducing the results from the literature. Furthermore, we examine surface gravity in nonstationary spacetimes, with a focus on Vaidya spacetime as a model of evaporating black holes.

Abstract:Abstract We rectify a typographical error in equation (3.14) from the original version of this article, pertaining to the effective Higgs-Majoron coupling, λ(0) JJh 1 , expressed in the mass eigenbasis. Notably, the same error persisted in the computational routines used in our work. This oversight resulted in a discrepancy in the numerical calculation of the invisible Higgs decay branching fraction, Br(h 1 → JJ), affecting a subset of the sampled points. While the main conclusions remain unaltered, we provide an updated version of our results.

Abstract:We consider marginally trapped surfaces in a spherically symmetric spacetime evolving due to the presence of a perfect fluid in D-dimensions and look at the various definitions of the surface gravity for these marginally trapped surfaces. We show that using Einstein equations it is possible to simplify and obtain general formulas for the surface gravity in terms of invariant quantities defined at these marginally trapped surfaces like area radius, cosmological constant, and principal values of the energy-momentum tensor ρ , p . We then correlate these expressions of surface gravity to the cases of dynamical horizons and timelike tubes and find which proposals of surface gravity are causally sensitive as these surfaces undergo causal transitions from spacelike to timelike and vice versa. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.084062 © 2024 American Physical Society
