Abstract:The flow of fluids over the boundaries of a rotating disc has many practical uses, including boundary-layer control and separation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to discuss the impact of unsteady magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) hybrid ferrofluid flow over a stretching/shrinking rotating disk. The time-dependent mathematical model is transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations (ODE's) by using similarity variables. The bvp4c method in the MATLAB platform is utilised in order to solve the present model. Since the occurrence of more than one solution is presentable, an analysis of solution stabilities is conducted. Both solutions were surprisingly found to be stable. Meanwhile, the skin friction coefficient, heat transfer rate—in cooperation with velocity—and temperature profile distributions are examined for the progressing parameters. The findings reveal that the unsteadiness parameter causes the boundary layer thickness of the velocity and temperature distribution profile to decrease. A higher value of magnetic and mass flux parameter lowers the skin friction coefficient. In contrast, the addition of the unsteadiness parameter yields a supportive effect on the heat transfer rate. An increment of the magnetic parameter up to 30% reduces the skin friction coefficient by 15.98% and enhances the heat transfer rate approximately up to 1.88%, significantly. In contrast, the heat transfer is rapidly enhanced by improving the mass flux parameter by almost 20%.

Abstract:The effects of rotation and intermittent frequency on the flow transition of secondary flow and, main flow were examined in detail. Certain hitherto unknown flow patterns were found. A numerical study was performed to study the characteristics of unsteady intermittent flow in a rotating curved pipe. Due to the rotation, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force could contribute to the unsteady intermittent flow and some complicated phenomena can be found. The results indicate that the unsteady intermittent flow are mainly characterized by five parameters: the Dean number Dn, the curvature kappa, the maximal force ratio F (of the Coriolis force to the centrifugal force in a cycle), the intermittent frequency parameter eta(the ratio of a pulslating time to the cycle period), and the Womersley number alpha. Present works shows the natures of the unsteady intermittent flow in a rotating curved pipe.

Abstract:Geometric confinements play an important role in many physical and biological processes and significantly affect the rheology and behavior of colloidal suspensions at low Reynolds numbers. On the basis of the linear Stokes equations, we investigate theoretically and computationally the viscous azimuthal flow induced by the slow rotation of a small spherical particle located in the vicinity of a rigid no-slip disk or inside a gap between two coaxially positioned rigid no-slip disks of the same radius. We formulate the solution of the hydrodynamic problem as a mixed-boundary-value problem in the whole fluid domain, which we subsequently transform into a system of dual integral equations. Near a stationary disk, we show that the resulting integral equation can be reduced into an elementary Abel integral equation that admits a unique analytical solution. Between two coaxially positioned stationary disks, we demonstrate that the flow problem can be transformed into a system of two Fredholm integral equations of the first kind. The latter are solved by means of numerical approaches. Using our solution, we further investigate the effect of the disks on the slow rotational motion of a colloidal particle and provide expressions of the hydrodynamic mobility as a function of the system geometry. We compare our results with corresponding finite-element simulations and observe very good agreement.

Abstract:The stability of a two-dimensional viscous flow between two rotating porous cylinders is studied. The basic steady flow is the most general rotationally-invariant solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in which the velocity has both radial and azimuthal components, and the azimuthal velocity profile depends on the Reynolds number. It is shown that for a wide range of the parameters of the problem, the basic flow is unstable to small two-dimensional perturbations. Neutral curves in the space of parameters of the problem are computed. Calculations show that the stability properties of this flow are determined by the azimuthal velocity at the inner cylinder when the direction of the radial flow is from the inner cylinder to the outer one and by the azimuthal velocity at the outer cylinder when the direction of the radial flow is reversed. This work is a continuation of our previous study of an inviscid instability in flows between rotating porous cylinders (see \cite{IM2013}).

Abstract:The low-Reynolds-number Stokes flow driven by rotation of two parallel cylinders of equal unit radius is investigated by both analytical and numerical techniques. In Part I, the case of counter-rotating cylinders is considered. A numerical (finite-element) solution is obtained by enclosing the system in an outer cylinder of radius $R_{0}\!\gg\!1$, on which the no-slip condition is imposed. A model problem with the same symmetries is first solved exactly, and the limit of validity of the Stokes approximation is determined; this model has some relevance for ciliary propulsion. For the two-cylinder problem, attention is focused on the small-gap situation $\varepsilon \ll 1$. An exact analytic solution is obtained in the contact limit $\varepsilon=0$, and a net force $F_{c}$ acting on the pair of cylinders in this contact limit is identified; this contributes to the torque that each cylinder experiences about its axis. The far-field torque doublet (`torquelet') is also identified. Part II treats the case of co-rotating cylinders, for which again a finite-element numerical solution is obtained for $R_{0}\!\gg \!1$. The theory of Watson (1995) is elucidated and shown to agree well with the numerical solution. In contrast to the counter-rotating case, inertia effects are negligible throughout the fluid domain, however large, provided Re $\ll 1$. In the concluding section, the main results for both cases are summarised, and the situation when the fluid is unbounded ($R_{0}=\infty$) is discussed. (...)

Abstract:The von Kármán swirling flow due to a rotating disk admits similarity solutions even in the case of a power-law fluid. The non-linearities introduced by the rheological model may deteriorate the numerical solutions of the resulting set of ordinary differential equations with increasing departure from Newtonian behaviour. The reliability of earlier numerical results are nevertheless approved, except for highly shear-thinning fluids (the power-law index n < 0.5) for which a severe ambiguity in the solutions is revealed and ascribed to a breakdown of the boundary layer approximation. This phenomenon makes it impossible to determine the pumping action of the disk. For highly shear-thickening fluids, on the other hand, new accurate results are provided beyond the parameter range considered earlier, i.e. for 1.5 < n ≤ 2.0.

Abstract:The fluid flow over a rotating disk is critically important due to its application in a broad spectrum of industries and engineering and scientific fields. In this article, the traditional swirling flow of Von Karman is optimized for Maxwell fluid over a porous spinning disc with a consistent suction/injection effect. Buongiorno’s model, which incorporates the effect of both thermophoresis and Brownian motion, describes the Maxwell nanofluid nature. The dimensionless system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) has been diminished from the system of modeled equations through a proper transformation framework. Which is numerically computed with the bvp4c method and for validity purposes, the results are compared with the RK4 technique. The effect of mathematical abstractions on velocity, energy, concentration, and magnetic power is sketched and debated. It is perceived that the mass transmission significantly rises with the thermophoresis parameter, while the velocities in angular and radial directions are reducing with enlarging of the viscosity parameter. Further, the influences of thermal radiation Rd and Brownian motion parameters are particularly more valuable to enhance fluid temperature. The fluid velocity is reduced by the action of suction effects. The suction effect grips the fluid particles towards the pores of the disk, which causes the momentum boundary layer reduction.

Abstract:Recently, Sengupta and Ghosh [Phys. Fluids 34, 054116, (2022)] published a linear stability analysis of a pressure-driven channel flow which is subject to rotation around a spanwise axis and a uniform magnetic field applied in the same direction. Unfortunately, the formulation of the magnetohydrodynamic part of the problem contains an elementary error which makes the obtained results unphysical. The error is due to unfounded omission of the electric potential contribution in the induced electric current which, thus, does not satisfy the charge conservation.

Abstract:The series solutions of unsteady flows of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid caused by an impulsively rotating infinite disk are given by means of an analytic technique, namely the homotopy analysis method. Using a set of new similarity transformations, we transfer the Navier–Stokes equations into a pair of nonlinear partial differential equations. The convergent series solutions are obtained, which are uniformly valid for all dimensionless time 0 ≤ τ < ∞ in the whole spatial region 0 ≤ η < ∞. To the best of our knowledge, such kind of series solutions have never been reported. The effect of magnetic number on the velocity is investigated.

Abstract:We study magnetic effects induced by rigidly rotating plates enclosing a cylindrical MHD Taylor-Couette flow at the finite aspect ratio $H/D=10$. The fluid confined between the cylinders is assumed to be liquid metal characterized by small magnetic Prandtl number, the cylinders are perfectly conducting, an axial magnetic field is imposed $\Ha \approx 10$, the rotation rates correspond to $\Rey$ of order $10^2-10^3$. We show that the end-plates introduce, besides the well known Ekman circulation, similar magnetic effects which arise for infinite, rotating plates, horizontally unbounded by any walls. In particular there exists the Hartmann current which penetrates the fluid, turns into the radial direction and together with the applied magnetic field gives rise to a force. Consequently the flow can be compared with a Taylor-Dean flow driven by an azimuthal pressure gradient. We analyze stability of such flows and show that the currents induced by the plates can give rise to instability for the considered parameters. When designing an MHD Taylor-Couette experiment, a special care must be taken concerning the vertical magnetic boundaries so they do not significantly alter the rotational profile.

Abstract:Investigation of nanofluid flow, mass and heat transfer, and impact of thermal relaxation time parameter against temperature in porous spinning rotating stretching disks was done. The behavior of heat and mass transfer, velocity, temperature and particles concentration volume fraction profiles against other parameters are investigated. A decrease in heat transfer in the lower disk and upper disk was observed as Eckert number, porosity parameter and Brownian diffusion parameter increased in value though with an increase in temperature ratio and thermal relaxation time parameter. The mass transfer rate at both lower and upper disk increased as Lewis number, Eckert number alongside porosity parameter increase in values, but decreases in value as Brownian diffusion parameter and temperature ratio increase in values. Increasing thermal relaxation time parameter caused decrease in temperature. The physical meaning is that because longer time is needed for transporting heat to nearby particles, the upper disk stretching parameter increases whenever radial velocity profile towards the lower disk is increased, which was exhibited by a negative sign towards the lower disk and positive sign in the neighbourhood of the upper disk. This implies that the fluid inside the two disks continues to flow in opposite directions of upward and downward directions. The partial differential equations which are non-linear are, transformed to non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations by app-lying Van Karman transformations which are then solved using MATLAP bvp4c with shooting technique.

Abstract:Purpose The hybrid nanofluid flow due to a rotating disk has numerous applications, including centrifugal pumps, paper production, polymers dying, air filtration systems, automobile cooling and solar collectors. This study aims to investigate the convective heat transport and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) hybrid nanofluid flow past a stretchable rotating surface using the Yamada-Ota and Xue models with the impacts of heat generation and thermal radiation. Design/methodology/approach The carbon nanotubes such as single-wall carbon nanotubes and multi-wall carbon nanotubes are suspended in a base fluid like water to make the hybrid nanofluid. The problem's governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations. Then, the numerical solutions are found with a bvp4c function in MATLAB software. The impacts of pertinent parameters on the flow and temperature fields are depicted in tables and graphs. Findings Two solution branches are discovered in a certain range of unsteadiness parameters. The fluid temperature and the rate of heat transport are enhanced when the thermal radiation and heat generation effects are increased. The Yamada-Ota model has a higher temperature than the Xue model. Furthermore, it is observed that only the first solution remains stable when the stability analysis is implemented. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, the results stated are original and new with the investigation of MHD hybrid nanofluid flow with convective heat transfer using the extended version of Yamada-Ota and Xue models. Moreover, the novelty of the present study is improved by taking the impacts of heat generation and thermal radiation.

Abstract:For the two-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) boundary layer system, it has been shown that the non-degenerate tangential magnetic field leads to the well-posedness in Sobolev spaces and high Reynolds number limits without any monotonicity condition on the velocity field in our previous works. This paper aims to show that sufficient degeneracy in the tangential magnetic field at a non-degenerate critical point of the tangential velocity field of shear flow indeed yields instability as for the classical Prandtl equations without magnetic field studied by Gérard-Varet and Dormy (2010). This partially shows the necessity of the non-degeneracy in the tangential magnetic field for the stability of the boundary layer of MHD in 2D at least in Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:Research on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of viscoelastic fluids has been an issue of considerable interest. However, it is gradually found that the behaviors of some viscoelastic fluids deviate from the classical flow and heat transfer phenomena, which are represented by integer order governing equations. Thus, it is necessary to construct a new constitutive relationship to study complex viscoelastic fluids. In this paper, we investigate the rotating magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flow and heat transfer of generalized Maxwell fluid with distributed order characteristics over an infinite plate, and the Hall effect is considered. In view of the multi-scale characteristics and nonlocality of generalized Maxwell fluid flow and heat transfer, fractional calculus is introduced to accurately depict the flow and heat transfer mechanism. Fractional governing equations consisting of the distributed order time fractional momentum equations and time fractional energy equation are derived. To calculate the numerical solutions of velocities and temperature governing equations, the Crank-Nicolson finite difference schemes are proposed based on the L1 approximation formula. Then, the effectiveness and feasibility of the numerical method are verified, and the effects of relevant parameters on fluid velocities and temperature are discussed, graphically. Finally, some conclusions are summarized.

Abstract:The suspension of tiny solid particles inside the energy transport liquids could enhance their thermal conductivity as well as provide an efficient and inventive approach to significantly improve their properties of heat transport. Therefore, our aim is to explore the radiative two-dimensional unsteady flow of a viscous nanofluid about an aligned magnetic field that includes the joint effect of suction, velocity slip, and heat source across a porous convective stretching/shrinking surface. Initially, using non-dimensional variables, the nonlinear governing partial differential equations (PDEs) were transformed into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) which were subsequently solved with the help of bvp4c built-in package in MATLAB. The results declare that escalating the values of the unsteadiness parameter escalates the friction drag whereas it reduces with the escalation of the slip parameter. Furthermore, the heat transfer rate escalates with the escalation of radiation and concentration parameter, and the escalation of the heat source parameter causes to reduce the heat transfer rate. Finally, it is found that the rate of heat transfer and friction drag continuously improve and decline against the rising rates of stretching, respectively.

Abstract:A mathematical model is developed for a non-Newtonian tangent hyperbolic fluid over a rotating disk by extending the concept of standard von Karman swirling flow. The impact of magnetic field, melting heat transfer, viscous dissipation, and Joule heating are incorporated. The existing leading nonlinear partial differential equations are modified into ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformation. Then, the bvp4c solver is adopted to investigate the solution of modified nonlinear ordinary differential equations with boundary constraints. The probable error (PE) is computed to examine the reliability of the correlation coefficient ( ) of the physical parameters. The presence and absence of power-law index parameter are depicted and compared by graphical and tabular form. The rotation parameter is positively correlated and the Weissenberg number is negatively correlated in the presence of the power-law index. Moreover, the Eckert number shows a dual nature in temperature and entropy generation profiles. Finally, velocities, i.e., radial and azimuthal are diminished by enhancing magnetic parameter.

Abstract:Two classes of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) motions of the incompressible Oldroyd-B fluids through an infinite cylinder are analytically investigated. General expressions are firstly established for shear stress and velocity fields corresponding to the motion induced by longitudinal shear stress on the boundary. For validation, the expression of the shear stress is determined by two different methods. Using an important remark regarding the governing equations for shear stress and fluid velocity corresponding to the two different motions, this expression is then used to provide the dimensionless velocity field of the MHD motion of the same fluids generated by a cylinder that rotates around its symmetry axis. Obtained results can generate exact solutions for any motion of this kind of Oldroyd-B fluids. Consequently, both types of motions are completely solved. For illustration, some case studies are considered, and adequate velocity fields are provided. The steady-state components of these velocities are presented in different forms whose equivalence is graphically proved. The influence of the magnetic field on the fluid behavior is graphically investigated. It was found that the fluid flows slower, and a steady state is earlier reached in the presence of a magnetic field. The fluid behavior when shear stress is given on the boundary is also investigated.

Abstract:In this research article, the effect of rotating and second-grade fluid on an MHD Jeffery–Hamel flow (J–HF) has been investigated. Here, the MHD second-grade fluid theory has been used. The PDEs that represent this flow are transformed into ODEs, which are then solved using two separate methods: the 4th–5th-order Runge–Kutta Fehlberg technique with shooting methodology and the DTM technique. The impact of diverse physical factors, like rotational factor, Deborah, and Hartmann numbers, on the dimensionless rapidity of the second-grade fluid and the wall frictional force factor is analyzed. Backflow is not detected in the lower part of the channel, according to the study. Additionally, the results show that the reverse flow disappears completely as the Hartmann number increases. Also, it is found that the Deborah quantity has less impact on the dimensionless velocity of second-grade fluid nearby the down surface of the rotative diverging channel, but a significant increase in the thickener of the momentum boundary layer at the upper half of the channel is noticed with the rise in the magnitude of the Deborah number, hence signaling the beginning of the backflowing behavior. The current findings are contrasted to those of prior investigations and the HAM-built Mathematica package BVPh 2. The newly used analytical method shows high reliability, usefulness, and precision, as evidenced by the excellent agreement between DTM, HAM-BMP BVPh 2, and computational RKF45.
