Abstract:Articulatory Phonology and Task Dynamics model spoken language mathematically based on dynamical systems, expressing the view that speaking is similar in nature to many other biological phenomena that have been described in this way. In this paper, we present a critical appraisal of developments in Articulatory Phonology and Task Dynamics in the 21st century, illustrating how this point of view addresses some fundamental questions in phonetics. Our paper identifies some of the key areas in which progress has been made, and others in which more progress is warranted. We thereby touch on recent work contributing to the empirical underpinning of some assumptions of the Task Dynamic model, then consider recent proposals of how Articulatory Phonology can deal with linguistically structured macro- and microscopic variation in constriction gestures induced by syllabic and phrasal prosodic structure. Part and parcel of these developments is the integration of the dynamical expression of phonological contrast into a model of utterance planning, and the structuring of the timeflow of speech by prosody. We finish our overview with a discussion on how a stronger link between articulation and acoustics could further enhance the dynamical approach to spoken language.

Nonlinear second-order dynamics describe labial constriction trajectories across languages and contexts

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of labial constriction trajectories during the production of /b/ and /m/ in English and Mandarin. We find that, across languages and contexts, the ratio of instantaneous displacement to instantaneous velocity generally follows an exponential decay curve from movement onset to movement offset. We formalize this empirical discovery in a differential equation and, in combination with an assumption of point attractor dynamics, derive a nonlinear second-order dynamical system describing labial constriction trajectories. The equation has only two parameters, T and r. T corresponds to the target state and r corresponds to movement rapidity. Thus, each of the parameters corresponds to a phonetically relevant dimension of control. Nonlinear regression demonstrates that the model provides excellent fits to individual movement trajectories. Moreover, trajectories simulated from the model qualitatively match empirical trajectories, and capture key kinematic variables like duration, peak velocity, and time to achieve peak velocity. The model constitutes a proposal for the dynamics of individual articulatory movements, and thus offers a novel foundation from which to understand additional influences on articulatory kinematics like prosody, inter-movement coordination, and stochastic noise.

Abstract:Since the seminal works of Bernstein (The coordination and regulation of movements. Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1967) several authors have supported the idea that, to produce a goal-oriented movement in general, and a movement of the organs responsible for the production of speech sounds in particular, individuals activate a set of coupling relations that coordinate the behavior of the elements of the motor system involved in the production of the target movement or sound. In order to characterize the configurations of the coupling relations underlying speech production articulator movements, we introduce an original method based on recurrence analysis. The method is validated through the analysis of simulated dynamical systems adapted to reproduce the features of speech gesture kinematics and it is applied to the analysis of speech articulator movements recorded in five German speakers during the production of labial and coronal plosive and fricative consonants at variable speech rates. We were able to show that the underlying coupling relations change systematically between labial and coronal consonants, but are not affected by speech rate, despite the presence of qualitative changes observed in the trajectory of the jaw at fast speech rate.

Abstract:It is proposed that the theory of dynamical systems offers appropriate tools to model many phonological aspects of both speech production and perception. A dynamic account of speech rhythm is shown to be useful for description of both Japanese mora timing and English timing in a phrase repetition task. This orientation contrasts fundamentally with the more familiar symbolic approach to phonology, in which time is modeled only with sequentially arrayed symbols. It is proposed that an adaptive oscillator offers a useful model for perceptual entrainment (or `locking in') to the temporal patterns of speech production. This helps to explain why speech is often perceived to be more regular than experimental measurements seem to justify. Because dynamic models deal with real time, they also help us understand how languages can differ in their temporal detail---contributing to foreign accents, for example. The fact that languages differ greatly in their temporal detail suggests that these effects are not mere motor universals, but that dynamical models are intrinsic components of the phonological characterization of language.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Speech requires the selection of a conceptual representation, the construction of a word form, and the execution of a complex articulatory plan. Investigating this global system requires high-resolution recordings with an analytic approach to resolve discrete cognitive states. We integrated autoregressive hidden Markov models to resolve trial-by-trial state transition sequences in distributed networks derived from a large-scale electrocorticographic dataset with complete coverage of language-dominant cortex. METHODS: Intracranial electrodes (n = 25810, 134 patients), including both surface grids and stereotactic depths, were implanted for the evaluation of epilepsy. Patients performed picture naming of common objects and underwent systematic cortical stimulation mapping of language function. We used cross-validated autoregressive hidden Markov models – combining the interpretability of multivariate autoregressive analysis with the nonlinear embedding of the switching Markov characteristic – to distinguish cognitive states defined by causal interactional motifs of distributed cortical substrates and to simulate in silico lesions of dynamical network structures. RESULTS: We created a detailed spatiotemporal atlas of word production spanning the entire language-dominant cortex. From this map, we resolved network dynamics comprising sequences of state space transitions for each word articulated. This identified five essential states for speech production, each defined by a unique pattern of directed interactions within the language network. We then derived a computational lesion model for state dynamics and compared its predictions with causal perturbation by direct cortical stimulation. We assembled a global dynamical state model for language production and resolved the fine-scale interregional dynamics of conceptualization and lexical access. CONCLUSIONS: The distributed network dynamics detailed within this comprehensive interactional map of speech production advance our understanding of how both local and disconnection injuries yield complex neurological deficits, facilitating the development of novel therapeutic approaches for aphasia.

Abstract:Articulatory Phonology advances an account of phonological structure in which dynamically defined vocal tract tasks—gestures—are simultaneously and isomorphically units of cognitive representation and units of physical action. This paradigm has fundamentally altered our understanding of the linguistic representation of words. This article reviews the relatively recent incorporation of prosody into Articulatory Phonology. A capsule review of the Articulatory Phonology theoretical framework is presented, and the notions of phrasal and prominence organization are introduced as the key aspects of linguistic prosodic structure under consideration. Parameter dynamics, activation dynamics, and prosodic modulation gestures, such as the π-gesture, are outlined. The review is extended to touch on rhythm, intonation, and pauses and to consider innovations for integrating multiple aspects of prosodic structure under this dynamical approach. Finally, a range of questions emerges, crystallizing outstanding issues ranging from the abstract and theoretical to the interactive and functional.

Abstract:Introduction: We examined the effects of four types of voicing on vocal tract movements by comparing the articulatory kinematics of whispered speech to habitual, loud, and soft conditions. Methods: Participants included 10 males and 10 females with no history of communication disorders. They read six stimulus sentences in habitual, loud, soft, and whispered conditions. An electromagnetic articulograph tracked the tongue, jaw, and lip movements. Analysis focused on the words we do from a longer sentence. Vertical tongue/jaw and horizontal lip movements were measured during the production of the retracted and rounded front and back vowels in we do. Results: Soft speech led to smaller and slower lip movements than in the habitual condition. Displacement increased for the tongue and jaw in loud and whispered speech compared to the habitual condition. Tongue and jaw velocity increased for loud but not for whispered speech compared to the habitual condition. Utterance duration increased for loud and whispered conditions. Discussion: The increasing tongue and jaw displacement and velocity from soft to habitual to loud speech reported here is consistent with previous accounts. Whispering was less intense than soft speech, yet it involved larger tongue and jaw movements than habitual speech, possibly reflecting a speaker’s focus on greater articulatory clarity when the acoustic signal is the weakest.

Abstract:<p>It is commonly understood that hand gesture and speech coordination in humans is culturally and cognitively acquired, rather than having a biological basis. Recently, however, the biomechanical physical coupling of arm movements to speech vocalization has been studied in steady‐state vocalization and monosyllabic utterances, where forces produced during gesturing are transferred onto the tensioned body, leading to changes in respiratory‐related activity and thereby affecting vocalization F0 and intensity. In the current experiment (<i>n</i> = 37), we extend this previous line of work to show that gesture–speech physics also impacts fluent speech. Compared with nonmovement, participants who are producing fluent self‐formulated speech while rhythmically moving their limbs demonstrate heightened F0 and amplitude envelope, and such effects are more pronounced for higher‐impulse arm versus lower‐impulse wrist movement. We replicate that acoustic peaks arise especially during moments of peak impulse (i.e., the beat) of the movement, namely around deceleration phases of the movement. Finally, higher deceleration rates of higher‐mass arm movements were related to higher peaks in acoustics. These results confirm a role for physical impulses of gesture affecting the speech system. We discuss the implications of gesture–speech physics for understanding of the emergence of communicative gesture, both ontogenetically and phylogenetically.</p>

Towards a dynamical model of English vowels. Evidence from diphthongisation

Abstract:Diphthong vowels exhibit a degree of inherent dynamic change, the extent of which can vary synchronically and diachronically, such that diphthong vowels can become monophthongs and vice versa. Modelling this type of change requires defining diphthongs in opposition to monophthongs. However, formulating an explicit definition has proven elusive in acoustics and articulation, as diphthongisation is often gradient in these domains. In this study, we consider whether diphthong vowels form a coherent phonetic category from the articulatory point of view. We present articulometry and acoustic data from six speakers of Northern Anglo-English producing a full set of phonologically long vowels. We analyse several measures of diphthongisation, all of which suggest that diphthongs are not categorically distinct from long monophthongs. We account for this observation with an Articulatory Phonology/Task Dynamic model in which diphthongs and long monophthongs have a common gestural representation, comprising two articulatory targets in each case, but they differ according to gestural constriction and location of the component gestures. We argue that a two-target representation for all long vowels is independently supported by phonological weight, as well as by the nature of historical diphthongisation and present-day dynamic vowel variation in British English.

Quantifying the Complexity of Excised Larynx Vibrations from High-Speed Imaging Using Spatiotemporal and Nonlinear Dynamic Analyses

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the biomechanical applications of spatiotemporal analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis to quantitatively describe regular and irregular vibrations of twelve excised larynges from high-speed image recordings. Regular vibrations show simple spatial symmetry, temporal periodicity, and discrete frequency spectra, while irregular vibrations show complex spatiotemporal plots, aperiodic time series, and broadband spectra. Furthermore, the global entropy and correlation length from spatiotemporal analysis and the correlation dimension from nonlinear dynamic analysis reveal a statistical difference between regular and irregular vibrations. In comparison with regular vibrations, the global entropy and correlation dimension of irregular vibrations are statistically higher, while the correlation length is significantly lower. These findings show that spatiotemporal analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis are capable of describing the complex dynamics of vocal fold vibrations from high-speed imaging and may potentially be helpful for understanding disordered behaviors in biomedical laryngeal systems.
Decoding kinematic information from beta-band motor rhythms of speech motor cortex: A methodological/analytic approach using concurrent speech movement tracking and magnetoencephalography

Abstract:Articulography and functional neuroimaging are two major tools for studying the neurobiology of speech production. Until now, however, it has generally not been feasible to use both in the same experimental setup because of technical incompatibilities between the two methodologies. Here we describe results from a novel articulography system dubbed Magneto-articulography for the Assessment of Speech Kinematics (MASK; Alves et al., 2016), which is technically compatible with magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain scanning systems. In the present paper we describe our methodological and analytic approach for extracting brain motor activities related to key kinematic and coordination event parameters derived from time-registered MASK tracking measurements ( ). Data were collected from ten healthy adults with tracking coils on the tongue, lips, and jaw. Analyses targeted the gestural landmarks of reiterated utterances /ipa/ and /api/, produced at normal and faster rates ( ; ). The results show that (1) Speech sensorimotor cortex can be reliably located in peri-rolandic regions of the left hemisphere; (2) mu (8-12 Hz) and beta band (13-30 Hz) neuromotor oscillations are present in the speech signals and contain information structures that are independent of those present in higher-frequency bands; and (3) hypotheses concerning the information content of speech motor rhythms can be systematically evaluated with multivariate pattern analytic techniques. These results show that MASK provides the capability, for deriving subject-specific articulatory parameters, based on well-established and robust motor control parameters, in the same experimental setup as the MEG brain recordings and in temporal and spatial co-register with the brain data. The analytic approach described here provides new capabilities for testing hypotheses concerning the types of kinematic information that are encoded and processed within specific components of the speech neuromotor system.

On the Emergence of Phonological Knowledge and on Motor Planning and Motor Programming in a Developmental Model of Speech Production

Abstract:A broad sketch for a model of speech production is outlined which describes developmental aspects of its cognitive-linguistic and sensorimotor components. A description of the emergence of phonological knowledge is a central point in our model sketch. It will be shown that the phonological form level emerges during speech acquisition and becomes an important representation at the interface between cognitive-linguistic and sensorimotor processes. Motor planning as well as motor programming are defined as separate processes in our model sketch and it will be shown that both processes revert to the phonological information. Two computational simulation experiments based on quantitative implementations (simulation models) are undertaken to show proof of principle of key ideas of the model sketch: (i) the emergence of phonological information over developmental stages, (ii) the adaptation process for generating new motor programs, and (iii) the importance of various forms of phonological representation in that process. Based on the ideas developed within our sketch of a production model and its quantitative spell-out within the simulation models, motor planning can be defined here as the process of identifying a succession of executable chunks from a currently activated phoneme sequence and of coding them as raw gesture scores. Motor programming can be defined as the process of building up the complete set of motor commands by specifying all gestures in detail (fully specified gesture score including temporal relations). This full specification of gesture scores is achieved in our model by adapting motor information from phonologically similar syllables (adapting approach) or by assembling motor programs from sub-syllabic units (assembling approach).

Abstract:Human movement studies and analyses have been fundamental in many scientific domains, ranging from neuroscience to education, pattern recognition to robotics, health care to sports, and beyond. Previous speech motor models were proposed to understand how speech movement is produced and how the resulting speech varies when some parameters are changed. However, the inverse approach, in which the muscular response parameters and the subject's age are derived from real continuous speech, is not possible with such models. Instead, in the handwriting field, the kinematic theory of rapid human movements and its associated Sigma-lognormal model have been applied successfully to obtain the muscular response parameters. This work presents a speech kinematics based model that can be used to study, analyze, and reconstruct complex speech kinematics in a simplified manner. A method based on the kinematic theory of rapid human movements and its associated Sigma lognormal model are applied to describe and to parameterize the asymptotic impulse response of the neuromuscular networks involved in speech as a response to a neuromotor command. The method used to carry out transformations from formants to a movement observation is also presented. Experiments carried out with the (English) VTR TIMIT database and the (German) Saarbrucken Voice Database, including people of different ages, with and without laryngeal pathologies, corroborate the link between the extracted parameters and aging, on the one hand, and the proportion between the first and second formants required in applying the kinematic theory of rapid human movements, on the other. The results should drive innovative developments in the modeling and understanding of speech kinematics.

Abstract:Purpose: Prior research introduced quantifiable effects of three methodological parameters (number of repetitions, stimulus length, and parsing error) on the spatiotemporal index (STI) using simulated data. Critically, these parameters often vary across studies. In this study, we validate these effects, which were previously only demonstrated via simulation, using children's speech data. Method: Kinematic data were collected from 30 typically developing children and 15 children with developmental language disorder, all spanning the ages of 6–8 years. All children repeated the sentence “buy Bobby a puppy” multiple times. Using these data, experiments were designed to mirror the previous simulated experiments as closely as possible to assess the effects of analytic decisions on the STI. Experiment 1 manipulated number of repetitions, Experiment 2 manipulated stimulus length (or the number of movement units in the target phrase), and Experiment 3 manipulated precision of parsing of the articulatory trajectories. Results: The findings of all three experiments closely mirror those of the prior simulation. Experiment 1 showed consistent underestimation of STI values from smaller repetition counts consistent with the theoretical model for all three participant groups. Experiment 2 found speech segments containing fewer movements yield lower STI values than longer ones. Finally, Experiment 3 showed even small parsing errors are found to significantly increase measured STI values. Conclusions: The results of this study are consistent with the findings of prior simulations in showing that the number of repetitions, length of stimuli, and amount of parsing error can all strongly influence the STI independent of behavioral factors. These results further confirm the importance of closely considering the design of experiments, which employ the STI.

Towards a Quantitative Analysis of Coarticulation with a Phoneme-to-Articulatory Model

Abstract:Prior coarticulation studies focus mainly on limited phonemic sequences and specific articulators, providing only approximate descriptions of the temporal extent and magnitude of coarticulation. This paper is an initial attempt to comprehensively investigate coarticulation. We leverage existing Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) datasets to develop and train a phoneme-to-articulatory (P2A) model that can generate realistic EMA for novel phoneme sequences and replicate known coarticulation patterns. We use model-generated EMA on 9K minimal word pairs to analyze coarticulation magnitude and extent up to eight phonemes from the coarticulation trigger, and compare coarticulation resistance across different consonants. Our findings align with earlier studies and suggest a longer-range coarticulation effect than previously found. This model-based approach can potentially compare coarticulation between adults and children and across languages, offering new insights into speech production.

Abstract:Speech production can differ depending on how speech is elicited (e.g., spontaneous speech, read text, speaking style instructions, the speaking environment). Previous studies have shown different speaking styles being elicited via instruction (e.g., clear speech) or via the speaking environment (e.g., Lombard speech). There is evidence that the acoustic features of clear speech elicited by reading are similar to those observed in semi-spontaneous interaction between two interlocutors, but that clear speech changes are of a greater magnitude in the read speech than the semi-spontaneous speech. Ten talkers (five male, five female) performed read sentences (BVD) and picture descriptions in several conditions. The present study compares vowel formants from BVD sentences and spontaneously produced picture descriptions in a variety of conditions. Conditions were as follows: (1) repeated measures given the same instructions, (2) the effects of two speaking style instructions (conversational and clear), and (3) four simulated listening environments (quiet, 55 dB SPL of white noise, 63 dB SPL of white noise, and a reverberant environment) presented via earphones. Formants were extracted both manually (hand marked) and using automated techniques. Acoustic features relevant to the speaking styles and simulated conditions will be discussed in terms of the two extraction techniques.

Abstract:The articulation process of dynamical networks is studied with a functional map, a minimal model for the dynamic change of relationships through iteration. The model is a dynamical system of a function $f$, not of variables, having a self-reference term $f \circ f$, introduced by recalling that operation in a biological system is often applied to itself, as is typically seen in rules in the natural language or genes. Starting from an inarticulate network, two types of fixed points are formed as an invariant structure with iterations. The function is folded with time, until it has finite or infinite piecewise-flat segments of fixed points, regarded as articulation. For an initial logistic map, attracted functions are classified into step, folded step, fractal, and random phases, according to the degree of folding. Oscillatory dynamics are also found, where function values are mapped to several fixed points periodically. The significance of our results to prototype categorization in language is discussed.

Abstract:Ranging from overt emotion displays to the understated eyebrow raise accompanying speech, facial expressions are indispensable cues in social interaction. Yet, how these inherently dynamic cues contribute to emotion signalling remains only partially understood. One overlooked factor is how facial actions combine and recombine over time to produce nuanced expressions. Moreover, although most face-to-face interactions naturally involve speech, its contribution to facial emotion signalling has been largely neglected. Building on motor control principles and employing a novel data-driven pipeline - combining spatiotemporal dimensionality reduction, dynamic feature extraction, classification and clustering - we investigated the structure and function of facial dynamics in both Expression only and Emotive speech signals. We show that a few fundamental spatiotemporal patterns reliably differentiated between specific emotion dynamics such as happy, sad and angry as well as between Expression only and Emotive speech signals. Furthermore, these spatiotemporal components exhibit meaningful substates, which reflect transient dynamics that are diagnostic of emotion content. This underlying spatiotemporal structure represents an efficient encoding strategy, optimising the transmission and perception of emotion and non-emotion facial signals. These findings have implications for understanding normative and "atypical" face-to-face signalling and can inform the design of expressive emotive capabilities in artificial social agents. Moreover, our data-driven pipeline can be extended to study broader aspects of multimodal social signalling.

Abstract:This study examines relationships between external face movements, tongue movements, and speech acoustics for consonant-vowel (CV) syllables and sentences spoken by two male and two female talkers with different visual intelligibility ratings. The questions addressed are how relationships among measures vary by syllable, whether talkers who are more intelligible produce greater optical evidence of tongue movements, and how the results for CVs compared to those for sentences. Results show that the prediction of one data stream from another is better for C/a/ syllables than C/i/ and C/u/ syllables. Across the different places of articulation, lingual places result in better predictions of one data stream from another than do bilabial and glottal places. Results vary from talker to talker; interestingly, high rated intelligibility do not result in high predictions. In general, predictions for CV syllables are better than those for sentences.
