Abstract:Variations in the photosynthetic plasticity of tropical trees. To investigate how and to what extent there are differences in the photosynthetic plasticity of trees in response to different light environments, six species from three successional groups (late successional, mid‐successional, and pioneers) were exposed to three different light environments [deep shade – DS (5% full sunlight – FS), moderate shade – MS (35% FS) and full sunlight – FS]. Maximum net photosynthesis (Amax), leaf N partitioning, stomatal, mesophile, and biochemical limitations (SL, ML, and BL, respectively), carboxylation velocity (Vcmax), and electron transport (Jmax) rates, and the state of photosynthetic induction (IS) were evaluated. Higher values of Amax, Vcmax, and Jmax in FS were observed for pioneer species, which invested the largest amount of leaf N in Rubisco. The lower IS for pioneer species reveals its reduced ability to take advantage of sunflecks. In general, the main photosynthetic limitations are diffusive, with SL and ML having equal importance under FS, and ML decreasing along with irradiance. The leaf traits, which are more determinant of the photosynthetic process, respond independently in relation to the successional group, especially with low light availability. An effective partitioning of leaf N between photosynthetic and structural components played a crucial role in the acclimation process and determined the increase or decrease of photosynthesis in response to the light conditions.

Abstract:Abstract The link between functional traits and changes in the environment are challenging, especially in systems of high diversity, such as transitional regions between savannas and tropical forests that are considered unstable and highly vulnerable to climate change. Here we evaluate a series of anatomical traits, key morphological traits, and nutrient concentration for the most representative woody species of four vegetation types (i.e. semideciduous seasonal forest, transition forest, typical cerrado and rocky cerrado ) in the Amazonia-Cerrado transition. Our aim was to understand how trees respond to the distinct and unique environmental conditions in each area. Overall, species growing in closed-canopy environments exhibited acquisitive strategies (i.e., higher leaf water content and higher specific leaf area). On the other hand, species from open-canopy environments have adopted conservative strategies (i.e., higher leaf thickness and higher trichomes density). These differences represent a divergence in the adaptive strategies of woody species of the Amazonia-Cerrado transition and are important indicators of how vegetation can respond to future climate change and water availability. Despite these differences, stomatal density and leaf nutrient concentration at a mass basis was surprisingly similar across trees from all vegetation types, suggesting some common environmental drivers, such as likely similar nutrient limitation and climate seasonality.

Abstract:Increases in hydrological extremes, including drought, are expected for Amazon forests. A fundamental challenge for predicting forest responses lies in identifying ecological strategies which underlie such responses. Characterization of species-specific hydraulic strategies for regulating water-use, thought to be arrayed along an 'isohydric-anisohydric' spectrum, is a widely used approach. However, recent studies have questioned the usefulness of this classification scheme, because its metrics are strongly influenced by environments, and hence can lead to divergent classifications even within the same species. Here, we propose an alternative approach positing that individual hydraulic regulation strategies emerge from the interaction of environments with traits. Specifically, we hypothesize that the vertical forest profile represents a key gradient in drought-related environments (atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, soil water availability) that drives divergent tree water-use strategies for coordinated regulation of stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potentials (ΨL) with tree rooting depth, a proxy for water availability. Testing this hypothesis in a seasonal eastern Amazon forest in Brazil, we found that hydraulic strategies indeed depend on height-associated environments. Upper canopy trees, experiencing high vapor pressure deficit (VPD), but stable soil water access through deep rooting, exhibited isohydric strategies, defined by little seasonal change in the diurnal pattern of gs and steady seasonal minimum ΨL. In contrast, understory trees, exposed to less variable VPD but highly variable soil water availability, exhibited anisohydric strategies, with fluctuations in diurnal gs that increased in the dry season along with increasing variation in ΨL. Our finding that canopy height structures the coordination between drought-related environmental stressors and hydraulic traits provides a basis for preserving the applicability of the isohydric-to-anisohydric spectrum, which we show here may consistently emerge from environmental context. Our work highlights the importance of understanding how environmental heterogeneity structures forest responses to climate change, providing a mechanistic basis for improving models of tropical ecosystems.
Growth and drought resilience of four native tree species suitable for reforestation of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest

Abstract:Abstract Deforestation of tropical forests has been a critical issue affecting climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation. Reforestation strives to remedy this situation, yet it is futile as long as deforestation of primary forests continues. Since deforestation is partly motivated by the demand for valuable tropical wood, reforestation should focus not only on planting native tree species, but specifically on a high diversity of native tree species with high-quality wood. However, the eco-physiological information required for growing such species is limited, and their resilience to drought events is unknown. Here, we focused on four native tropical wood tree species identified as suitable for Brazil’s Atlantic Forest reforestation. Growth, carbon assimilation, water-use and xylem hydraulics were studied in seedlings of the two legume species Dalbergia nigra and Plathymenia foliolosa and the two non-legume species Cariniana legalis and Zeyheria tuberculosa. Seedlings were monitored weekly for 9 consecutive weeks, three to five weeks of which under induced drought. Growth and carbon assimilation were 25–65 per cent higher in the legume vs. non-legume species. In turn, non-legume species mostly avoided the drought by stomatal closure, producing a 50 per cent higher water-use efficiency (WUE) compared with the legume species. The average water potential at 50 per cent stomatal conductivity (Ψgs50) for legume species was −2.6 MPa, whereas for non-legume species it was −0.85 MPa. Still, each species showed a unique set of responses, indicating different growth strategies under mesic and xeric conditions. Our results indicate a divergence among legume and non-legume species, driven by a trade-off between plant productivity (carbon assimilation and growth) and plant safety (stomatal regulation and WUE). All in all, the four species of juvenile potted plants demonstrated a high capacity for recovery from drought, which supports their potential role in future reforestation under climate change.

Abstract:Key messagePlantations of two multipurpose legume species markedly differ in stand development and functioning. The sustainability of tree plantations can be inferred from their ecological strategies along the fast-slow economic spectrum.Growing plantations with native trees is crucial for ecosystem restoration and wood and non-wood product supply, but silvicultural guidelines are lacking. The growth, survival, biomass allocation, nutrient accumulation and nutrient use efficiency, 13C isotopic composition, canopy openness, and solar radiation in understory and grass cover were assessed in monoculture plantations of fast [Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber & Ducke) Barneby], and slow [Anadenanthera peregrina var. peregrina (L.) Speg] growing species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Nine experimental plots per species and a stand density of 1111 trees ha−1 were examined 6 years after planting. The mean values of wood density were higher in A. peregrina than S. parahyba trees, with 0.66 g cm−3 and 0.27 g cm−3, respectively. S. parahyba trees showed 75% higher stem-wood biomass, with five times less leaf biomass than A. peregrina trees. However, contrasting diameter growth and survival rates resulted in comparable stand above-ground biomass between species. Macronutrient content and δ13C composition differences showed that S. parahyba exhibits higher nutrient use while A. peregrina has higher intrinsic water efficiency. Grass was abundant in the S. parahyba plantations and suppressed in the A. peregrina plantations, in line with the observed canopy openness and solar radiation in the understory. Functional traits allow the prediction of the contrasting silvicultural potentials of A. peregrina (wood production and microclimate recovery) and S. parahyba (timber production and agroforestry).

Abstract:Summary The hydraulic limitation hypothesis postulates an increase in resistance to water conductivity as trees become taller. Accordingly, we expect that the hydraulic architecture of trees shares a close relationship with the crown architecture and that anatomical traits can directly or indirectly influence hydraulic conductivity. The aim of this work was to investigate the variations in vessels, hydraulic properties and wood density of three native Brazilian tree species. We selected 40-year-old Balfourodendron riedelianum , Cariniana legalis and Handroanthus vellosoi trees and measured maximum vessel length, specific hydraulic conductivity, the percentage loss of conductivity, leaf hydraulic conductivity, and density of branches at three different positions of the crown. Variability in anatomical and hydraulic properties was mostly explained by differences between species, while small differences were related to the position of the branch along the crown-position gradient. Within the measured variables, only the maximum vessel length differed between one crown position and the other. We posit that poor differences between anatomical and hydraulic positions in the crown-position gradient could be related to sample positions within the crown, which were relatively close to each other, with branches having similar ages and diameters. Our findings demonstrate that despite growing in the same environment and having the same age, our species deploy contrasting carbon allocation and hydraulic species-specific strategies. These strategies mirror different growth performances resulting from a different trade-off between hydraulic capacity and safety.

Abstract:How plants respond physiologically to leaf warming and low water availability may determine how they will perform under future climate change. In 2015–2016, an unprecedented drought occurred across Amazonia with record-breaking high temperatures and low soil moisture, offering a unique opportunity to evaluate the performances of Amazonian trees to a severe climatic event. We quantified the responses of leaf water potential, sap velocity, whole-tree hydraulic conductance ( K wt ), turgor loss and xylem embolism, during and after the 2015–2016 El Niño for five canopy-tree species. Leaf/xylem safety margins (SMs), sap velocity and K wt showed a sharp drop during warm periods. SMs were negatively correlated with vapour pressure deficit, but had no significant relationship with soil water storage. Based on our calculations of canopy stomatal and xylem resistances, the decrease in sap velocity and K wt was due to a combination of xylem cavitation and stomatal closure. Our results suggest that warm droughts greatly amplify the degree of trees' physiological stress and can lead to mortality. Given the extreme nature of the 2015–2016 El Niño and that temperatures are predicted to increase, this work can serve as a case study of the possible impact climate warming can have on tropical trees. Abstract:Introduction: Trees from flooded forests have to adjust their xylem hydraulic structure to face the annual flooding and the climatic conditions of the atmosphere. Usually, this adjustment of anatomical tissues in the tropics is driven by drought events inducing conservative behavior and can be recorded annually in tree rings. However, how the flood pulse and the climatic conditions influence the xylem hydraulic structure in floodplain trees is unknown. Methods: To fill this gap, we explore if flooded periods and monthly climate variation affect the annual tree growth and xylem anatomy structure for the tree species Hydrochorea corymbosa (Fabaceae) from the várzea flooded forest in the Central Amazon. We developed a 41-year ring width chronology (1971–2018) and a 30-year time series of xylem anatomy parameters (1988–2018) as mean hydraulic vessel diameter (Dh), vessel frequency (VF), and parenchyma quantity (PQ). We correlated the series with monthly hydrological and climatic data. Results: The hydrological regime did not correlate with annual tree growth in that species as we previously expected but showed correlations with the xylem anatomical structure. High flood levels during the end of the flooding period induced conservative patterns of the anatomical structure, with a negative correlation with Dh (rho June = −0.40, p < 0.05) and a positive correlation with the PQ (rho September/October = 0.42, p < 0.05). These responses show that these trees are responding to flooding similar to the tree responses to drought. Regarding the climatic variation, the annual tree growth showed a negative correlation with the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), after the second half of the flooded period with the strongest correlation happening during the non-flooded period (rho December = −0.66, p < 0. 01). These conservative patterns in tree behavior also happened when the maximum temperature negatively affected the vessel diameter (rho September = −0.42, p < 0.05). Discussion: In that case, we recognized two different moments that the environment is inducing conservative patterns in the xylem structure of those trees: 1) increasing the flood levels and 2) the high evaporative demand during the non-flooded period. In this way, the intensification of the hydrological regime, as well as the strong drought conditions during the non-flooded periods, can be a risk for H. corymbosa in the Central Amazonian floodplains.

Age-specific and species-specific tree response to seasonal drought in tropical dry forests

Abstract:Millions of people depend on ecosystem services provided by Tropical Dry Forests (TDFs), yet their proximity to population centers, seasonally dry climate, and the ease at which they are converted to agriculture has left only 10 % of their original extent globally. As more TDFs become protected, basic information relating TDF age to subsurface water resources will help guide forest recovery. Severe deforestation and recent reforestation around Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuador produced a mosaic of different successional stages ideal for exploring relationships between TDF age, subsurface water availability and species-specific responses to seasonal drought. Over one year, we measured gravimetric water content, predawn and midday leaf water potential, and the stable isotope composition of xylem and source waters in two regenerating and one primary forest. Over the transition from wet to dry season, we discovered a sharper decrease in predawn water potential in younger successional forests than in the primary forest. Growing in degraded subsurface environments under increased competition, successional forest trees accessed deeper sources of moisture from unsaturated weathered bedrock and groundwater through the dry season; however, different species employed distinct water use strategies. Ceiba trichistandra maintained midday water potentials above -1.27 MPa through a drought avoidance strategy dependent on groundwater. Sideroxylon celastrinum tolerated drought by lowering predawn and midday water potential through the early dry season but took up greater proportions of saprolite moisture and groundwater as the dry season progressed. Contrastingly, Handroanthus chrysanthus maintained access to shallow soil and saprolite moisture by dropping midday water potential to -4.30 MPa, reflecting drought tolerance. Our results show that limited subsurface water resources in regenerating TDF's lead to species-specific adaptations reliant on deeper sources of moisture. The recovery of soil and saprolite hydrologic properties following disturbances is likely to exceed 100 years, highlighting the importance of forest conservation.

Abstract:Abstract Plant-water relations in secondary tropical montane forests (TMFs) are driven by complex interactions between environmental conditions, species composition, and forest structure. We investigated the differential water-use strategies of cooccurring pioneers and late-successional tree species in a secondary TMF of Eastern Himalaya, India. It is the wettest (mean annual precipitation = 4500 mm yr -1 ) high-elevation (> 2000 m) site in the world. The observed maximum daily stand transpiration (5.3 mm) is highest among other tropical montane or lowland forests. Although energy-limited, increased moisture availability allowed the observed sap flux densities from the studied species, Symplocos racemosa, Eurya acuminata, and Castanopsis racemosa , to be 3-9 times higher than their conspecifics from relatively drier TMFs. Interestingly, differential access to solar radiation, a characteristic of the forest canopy in secondary forests, induced significant radial and azimuthal variability in sap flow. Solar radiation was the key driver of transpiration in energy-limited winters and Vapour pressure deficit in energy-abundant summers. Nocturnal (1800-0500h) transpiration was significant (13.8%) part of daily T and was dominated by pre-dawn flux. Shallow-rooted pioneers, S. racemosa and E. acuminata , exhibited strong midday depression in sap flow in response to environmental extremes and soil moisture fluctuations, whereas the deep-rooted late-successional C. hystrix transpired unaffected. The complex interactions between different successional groups for accessing changing energy and moisture conditions are highlighted for prioritized conservation and management of these secondary forests in Eastern Himalaya.

Abstract:Absolute growth rates change with tree size and age, shifting throughout species ontogeny. The study on interspecific variation in plant traits has generated important insights into the life-history strategies and their consequences for ecosystem functioning. However, it remains unknown to what extent – and even if – species’ functional traits are related to the variation in their growth trajectories. We set out to model growth trajectories of 45 woody species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest in a secondary subtropical forest under regeneration, aiming to understand if species can be grouped by their growth patterns throughout ontogeny and if these groups could be classified in distinct ecological strategies based on key plant traits. We used a maximum likelihood estimation approach to predict growth trajectories using three ecologically relevant parameters [maximum growth rate (G max ), diameter at maximum growth rate (D opt ), and the ontogenetic variability in growth rate (K)] followed by multivariate analyses to detect associations among phylogenetic relationships, plant traits, and growth parameters and classify species into growth pattern groups. Across species, growth trajectory parameters varied widely. The cluster analysis identified three distinct groups based on growth trajectories parameters, which were not functionally or ecologically well defined. Our findings supports the idea that traits describing plant size and tree shape, such as maximum height, canopy volume and height to diameter ratio, were generally the best predictors of species growth parameters throughout ontogeny, even though traits representing resource-use and reproductive strategies also played a significant role. Growth-trait framework can be understood as a continuum of multi-trait combinations where, at one end of the gradient, we find trees with higher growth rate and larger diameters supporting a voluminous canopy combined with lower investment in leaf tissue and smaller diaspore; at the other end, taller trees supporting a smaller canopy with higher investment in leaf tissue and longer diaspore. Ultimately, we have shown that tree architecture, leaf and reproductive traits significantly influence growth trajectory along tree ontogeny, which may be the reason why objectively grouping species based on growth-trajectories parameters is ineffective, at least in highly diverse secondary subtropical forests undergoing regeneration.
Functional groups of woody species in riparian forest in the Brazilian semi-arid region: phenological and morphophysiological evidence

Abstract:Abstract Relationships between morphophysiological and phenological traits of functional groups of tree species from seasonally dry tropical environments are reasonably known. However, such information is scarce for riparian forests in semi-arid environments, especially regarding the representativeness of these groups in the community. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of the morphofunctional characteristics of leaves and stem in the identification of functional groups and how these traits vary in these groups in a riparian forest in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Traits of leaf phenology (specific leaf area, leaf area, leaf thickness, and leaf dry matter content), wood density, and amount of saturated water in the stem and their association with soil water availability, relative air humidity, precipitation, temperature, photoperiod, and vapor pressure deficit were evaluated in 23 species. Cluster analysis showed three functional groups: deciduous low wood density species (9%), deciduous high wood density species (48%), and non-deciduous species, which included semideciduous (17%) and evergreen species (26%). Deciduousness was positively related to specific leaf area and negatively related to leaf dry matter and leaf area. Deciduous and semideciduous species (55.1% and 7.5% of the individuals in the community, respectively) showed a strong dependence on abiotic factors linked to precipitation and temperature, while the evergreen species showed a strong dependence on the vapor pressure deficit to trigger their phenophases. It was evident that the studied functional traits influenced the leaf habit, which is essential to determine the abundance of functional groups of woody species from riparian forests in the semi-arid region.

Abstract:Intraspecific trait variation is a key feature that enables species to occur in heterogeneous landscapes. We studied Clusia grandiflora and Anacardium occidentale traits over a forest–dune gradient on the Brazilian Amazon coast ( restinga ). C. grandiflora showed a drought-avoidance strategy, storing water in its leaves, whereas A. occidentale showed conservative resource use in leaves, evidenced by its high dry-matter content and acquisitive resource in wood, showing lower wood density. Only A. occidentale changed its trait values through the forest–dune gradient, showing more conservative leaves in dunes and shrublands, despite a lower wood density than in forest. Leaf and wood traits are likely to be decoupled among Amazon coastal trees and their responses to environmental gradients are species-specific.

Abstract:Tropical forests are converted at an alarming rate for agricultural use and pastureland, but also regrow naturally through secondary succession. For successful forest restoration, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of secondary succession. These mechanisms may vary across forest types, but analyses across broad spatial scales are lacking. Here, we analyse forest recovery using 1,403 plots that differ in age since agricultural abandonment from 50 sites across the Neotropics. We analyse changes in community composition using species-specific stem wood density (WD), which is a key trait for plant growth, survival and forest carbon storage. In wet forest, succession proceeds from low towards high community WD (acquisitive towards conservative trait values), in line with standard successional theory. However, in dry forest, succession proceeds from high towards low community WD (conservative towards acquisitive trait values), probably because high WD reflects drought tolerance in harsh early successional environments. Dry season intensity drives WD recovery by influencing the start and trajectory of succession, resulting in convergence of the community WD over time as vegetation cover builds up. These ecological insights can be used to improve species selection for reforestation. Reforestation species selected to establish a first protective canopy layer should, among other criteria, ideally have a similar WD to the early successional communities that dominate under the prevailing macroclimatic conditions.

Abstract:Flooding in the floodplain of Amazonian black‐water rivers results in the selection of different tree lineages, thus promoting coexistence between species. We investigated whether Amazonian tree communities are phylogenetically structured and distributed along a flooding gradient, from irregularly flooded forests along streams embedded in highland forests (terra‐firme) to seasonally flooded floodplains of large rivers (igapós). The results show that forests subject to prolonged seasonal flooding had reduced taxon richness, low phylogenetic diversity, and random distribution of lineages within communities, while riparian forests in streams had higher rates of taxon richness, diversity, and phylogenetic dispersion, in addition to greater phylogenetic endemism. Different adaptations to root waterlogging are likely requirements for colonization in these environments and may represent an important factor in the diversification of tree lineages in the Amazon biome. Floristic inventories and hydrological monitoring were performed along the Falsino River, a black‐water river in the eastern Amazon within the Amapá National Forest. We constructed a presence‐and‐absence matrix and generated a phylogeny using the vascular plant database available in GenBank. We calculated the standardized values of the metrics of phylogenetic diversity (ses.PD), average phylogenetic distance (ses.MPD), and average nearest‐neighbor distance (ses.MNTD) to test whether the history of relationships between species in the community is influenced by inundation. We used the phylogenetic endemism (PE) metric to verify the existence of taxa with restricted distribution. Linear regressions were used to test whether phylogenetic metrics have a significant relationship with the variables: maximum flood height, maximum water table depth, and maximum flood amplitude. The results show that forests subject to prolonged seasonal flooding have reduced taxon richness, low phylogenetic diversity, and random distribution of lineages within communities. On the other hand, terra‐firme riparian forests showed higher rates of taxon richness, diversity, and phylogenetic dispersion, in addition to greater phylogenetic endemism. These results indicate that seasonal and predictable soil flooding filters tree lineages along the hydrographic gradient. Different adaptations to root waterlogging are likely requirements for colonization in these environments and may represent an important factor in the diversification of tree lineages in the Amazon biome.

Abstract:Summary Wood anatomy plays a key role in plants' ability to persist under drought and should therefore predict demography. Plants balance their resource allocation among wood cell types responsible for different functions. However, it remains unclear how these anatomical trade‐offs vary with water availability, and the extent to which they influence demographic rates. We investigated how wood anatomical trade‐offs were related to drought and demographic rates, for seedling communities in four tropical dry forests differing in their aridity indexes (AIs). We measured wood density, as well as vessel, fiber and parenchyma traits of 65 species, and we monitored growth and survival for a 1‐yr period. Two axes defined wood anatomical structure: a fiber‐parenchyma axis and a vessel‐wood density axis. Seedlings in drier sites had larger fiber but lower parenchyma fractions, while in less dry forests, seedlings had the opposite allocation pattern. The fiber–parenchyma trade‐off was unrelated to growth but was positively related to survival, and this later relationship was mediated by the AI. These findings expand our knowledge about the wood anatomical trade‐offs that mediate responses to drought conditions and influence demographic rates, in the seedling layer. This information is needed to anticipate future responses of forests to changing drought conditions.

Abstract:In tropical forests, leaf phenological strategies determine patterns of plant hydraulic traits variations. Whereas hydraulic trait values of evergreen species are coupled to water availability, while drought‐deciduous species exhibit hydraulic traits indicative of drought sensitivity regardless of climatic moisture. Considering the global intensification of aridity in tropical biomes due to climate change, we need to understand what shapes the distribution of drought sensitivity in tropical plants. We conducted a pantropical data synthesis representing 1117 species to test whether xylem‐specific hydraulic conductivity (KS), water potential at leaf turgor loss (ΨTLP) and water potential at 50% loss of KS (ΨP50) varied along climate gradients. The ΨTLP and ΨP50 increased with climatic moisture only for evergreen species, but KS did not. Species with high ΨTLP and ΨP50 values were associated with both dry and wet environments. However, drought‐deciduous species showed high ΨTLP and ΨP50 values regardless of water availability, whereas evergreen species only in wet environments. All three traits showed a weak phylogenetic signal and a short half‐life. These results suggest strong environmental controls on trait variance, which in turn is modulated by leaf habit along climatic moisture gradients in the tropics.

Abstract:This open, randomised multicenter trial compares the efficacy and safety of Fragmin administered subcutaneously twice daily with standard heparin administered by continuous infusion in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The initial dose of Fragmin is 100 U anti-Xa/kg/12 h and the further doses are adjusted according to the anti-Xa activity between 0.5 and 0.8 U/ml, 3 hours after the morning injection. The initial dose of standard heparin is 240 UI/kg/12 h. The dose adjustments are based on the daily results of APTT (1.5 - 3 times the control). Treatments efficacy are appreciated when comparing the venography performed before and after 10 days of treatment. The safety is evaluated on clinical parameters and iterative biological tests. Sixty-six patients have been included in this study. Efficacy of the two treatments is equivalent with a phlebographic improvement in respectively 79.3 p. 100 (Heparin Group) and 71.0 p. 100 (Fragmin Group) of the cases and an aggravation in 3.4 p. 100 and 6.4 p. 100 (NS) respectively. The frequency of dosage adjustments is lower and the stability of biological tests is better in the Fragmin group. In conclusion, the administration of Fragmin twice daily by subcutaneous route seems to be equivalent at least to standard heparin continuous infusion in the treatment of recent DVT. The better convenience and safety of Fragmin have to be verified on a larger panel of patients.

Abstract:Non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) are major substrates for plant metabolism and have been implicated in mediating drought-induced tree mortality. Despite their significance, NSC dynamics in tropical forests remain little studied. We present leaf and branch NSC data for 82 Amazon canopy tree species in six sites spanning a broad precipitation gradient. During the wet season, total NSC (NSCT) concentrations in both organs were remarkably similar across communities. However, NSCT and its soluble sugar (SS) and starch components varied much more across sites during the dry season. Notably, the proportion of leaf NSCT in the form of SS (SS:NSCT) increased greatly in the dry season in almost all species in the driest sites, implying an important role of SS in mediating water stress in these sites. This adjustment of leaf NSC balance was not observed in tree species less-adapted to water deficit, even under exceptionally dry conditions. Thus, leaf carbon metabolism may help to explain floristic sorting across water availability gradients in Amazonia and enable better prediction of forest responses to future climate change.
