Abstract:Background: This study aimed to examine the evolving trends in the global burden of low back pain (LBP) from 1990 to 2021 and predicted disease burden until 2035. Materials and methods: LBP-related data were obtained from the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) query tool. All estimates and their 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) were generated using DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool in Global Burden of Disease, Injury, and Risk Factor Study (GBD) 2021. Data processing and visualization were conducted using The R Programming Language software version 4.3.2 and Joinpoint 4.7. Results: In 2021, approximately 628.8 million people worldwide were affected by LBP, with approximately 266.9 million new incident cases and age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of 3176.6 per 100,000. Compared with 1990, although the ASIR and age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rate (ASDALYsR) decreased, absolute numbers increased significantly. Projections for 2035 reveal a continued decline in ASIR and ASDALYsR for LBP. The LBP burden varied by the sociodemographic index quintile and GBD region, with the highest ASIR and ASDALYsR observed in Central Europe and the greatest decrease in East Asia. Globally, women bear a higher burden of LBP than men, with middle-aged populations experiencing the heaviest burden. Occupational ergonomic factors, high body mass index, and smoking remain the primary risk factors for LBP, with occupational ergonomic factors contributing the most to the overall burden. Conclusion: Despite a projected decline in incidence, the global burden of LBP persists, exhibiting significant regional and gender disparities. To mitigate its future burden, precise and effective prevention and control strategies targeting high-risk factors are imperative.

The global burden of disease attributable to high body mass index in 204 countries and territories: Findings from 1990 to 2019 and predictions to 2035

Abstract:Aim: Our study aims to provide an updated estimate of age- and sex-specific deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with high body mass index (BMI) from 1990 to 2019 at the global, regional and national levels, and to forecast the global burden of disease attributed to high BMI from 2020 to 2035. Methods: We used the data for the number of deaths, DALYs, age-standardized rate (per 100 000 population), percentage change and population attributable fraction from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) to examine the disease burden attributable to high BMI. We further applied an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to predict the disease burden for the period 2020-2035. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the deaths and DALYs attributable to high BMI increased by 148% and 155.86% for men, and by 111.67% and 121.78% for women, respectively. In 2019, high BMI directly accounted for 8.52% [95% uncertainty intervals (UI) 0.05, 0.12] of all-cause deaths and 5.89% (95% UI 0.04, 0.08) of global DALYs. The highest death rates were observed in men aged 65-69 and women aged 75-79. The highest DALY rates were observed in the age group of 60-64 for both sexes. In 2019, the highest age-standardized deaths and DALY rates were observed in the Central Asia region [163.15 (95% UI 107.72, 223.58) per 100 000 people] and the Oceania region [4643.33 (95% UI 2835.66, 6902.6) per 100 000 people], respectively. Fiji [319.08 (95% UI 213.77, 444.96) per 100 000 people] and Kiribati [10 000.58 (95% UI 6266.55, 14159.2) per 100 000 people] had the highest age-standardized deaths and DALY rates, respectively. In 2019, the highest age-standardized rates of high BMI-related deaths and DALYs were observed in the middle-high socio-demographic index quintile and in the middle socio-demographic index quintile. The age-standardized deaths and DALY rates attributable to high BMI are projected to increase in both sexes from 2020 to 2035. The death rates are projected to rise from 62.79 to 64.31 per 100 000 people, while the DALY rates are projected to rise from 1946 to 2099.54 per 100 000 people. Conclusions: High BMIs significantly contribute to the global disease burden. The projected rise in deaths and DALY rates attributable to high BMI by 2035 highlights the critical need to address the impact of obesity on public health. Our study provides policymakers with up-to-date and comprehensive information.

Abstract:Objective: This study explores the global disease burden associated with high Body Mass Index (BMI) from 1990 to 2021, using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (GBD 2021). Methods: We applied Joinpoint regression to assess trends in deaths and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and employed ARIMA models to project future BMI-related burdens. Results: From 1990 to 2021, global deaths linked to high BMI surged by 153.97%, rising from 1.46 million to 3.71 million. DALYs increased by 167.57%, with the highest rises in North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Women, particularly those aged 75 and above, experienced the most significant burden, with a faster rate of increase in disease burden compared to men post-2000. Future projections indicate a continued rise in BMI-related health impacts, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Conclusions: The global disease burden attributable to high BMI is increasing rapidly, particularly in low- and middle-income regions. Targeted public health interventions, especially for women and the elderly, are crucial to addressing this growing health challenge.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Aims The global historical and projected health impacts of the escalating burden of obesity on young adults, who are particularly susceptible to weight gain during transitional life stages, remain insufficiently understood. Materials and Methods Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we analysed the disability‐adjusted life‐years (DALYs) and deaths attributable to high body mass index (BMI) among young adults aged 20–44 years globally and by age, sex, year, location and disease between 1990 and 2019. Future projections until 2050 were further assessed. Results The global burden for young adults attributable to high BMI more than doubled from 1990 to 2019, reaching 24,509.8 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 20,191.8–28,966.0) thousand for DALYs and 321.9 (258.3–384.2) thousand for deaths. Males had a higher burden and faster increase than females. The burden escalated with advancing age. From 1990 to 2019, regions with middle Socio‐demographic Index (SDI) replaced regions with high‐middle SDI to have the highest age‐standardized rates of DALYs and deaths, while regions with low‐middle SDI witnessed the largest rise. Stroke, ischaemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus were consistently the top three causes of high BMI‐related burden, together accounting for 74.7% (70.8–78.4) for DALYs and 81.2% (77.6–84.2) for deaths in 2019. By 2050, the age‐standardized rates of DALYs due to high BMI tripled that in 1990, with the corresponding rates for deaths expected to double. Among the 10 most populous countries, India was projected to have the highest rates and the fastest increase in both DALYs and deaths by 2050. Conclusions The escalating disease burden attributable to high BMI in young adults, marked by notable demographic and geographic variations, highlights the urgent need for tailored public health interventions on weight management during young adulthood.

Abstract:Abstract Background The long-term and future trends in gout burden have rarely been reported. We aimed to analyze the trends in gout-related burden from 1990 to 2019 and forecast the trends from 2020 to 2050. Methods We extracted data on incidence cases, age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs), disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and age-standardized DALY rates, and calculated age-specific age-standardized rate (ASR). We also calculated the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) to quantify trends in gout-related incidence and DALYs. The ASIRs and age-standardized DALY rates were predicted to 2050 using the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model. The 95% uncertainty interval (UI) were calculated for all the estimates. Result Persistent increasing trends in gout-related ASIRs and the age-standardized DALY rates were observed from 1990 to 2019.The trends will remain increasing until in 2050. High BMI played a more vital role in causing gout in both younger and middle-aged group, while gout in older-aged was more often caused by the kidney disfunction. Moreover, group 65 and over years old were more susceptible to gout, and males were more likely to suffer from gout than females. Conclusion Gout-related both the ASIRs and the age-standardized DALY rates are expected to increase in most regions by 2050.Thus, gout remains a worldwide public health challenge, especially in high SDI countries, where more attention and health project services are needed. Given the differences on burden of gout, future successful interventions should be based on country-, age- and sex-specific distributions so as to reduce the burden of gout.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Low back pain is highly prevalent and the main cause of years lived with disability, but data on the burden and trends of low back pain (LBP) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To assess trends in the burden of LBP among AYAs aged 15–39 years at the global, regional and national levels from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 were used to analyze incidence, prevalence and Disability-adjusted life year (DALY) due to LBP at global, regional, and national levels. Joinpoint regression analysis calculated the average annual percentage changes (AAPC). Then analyse the association between incidence, prevalence and DALYs and socioeconomic development using the GBD Socio-demographic Index (SDI). Finally, projections were made until 2030 and calculated in Nordpred. RESULTS: The incidence, prevalence and DALYs rates (95%UI) were 2252.78 (1809.47–2784.79), 5473.43 (4488.62–6528.15) and 627.66 (419.71–866.97) in 2019, respectively. From 1990 to 2019, the incidence, prevalence, and DALYs rates AAPC (95%CI) were -0.49 (-0.56 to -0.42), -0.58 (-0.65 to -0.51) and -0.57 (-0.64 to -0.5), respectively. Incidence, prevalence, and DALYs rates in South Asia, East Asia, High-income North America, Western Europe, and Australasia decreased with SDI. Incidence, prevalence, and DALYs rates in Central Asia, Central Europe, and Eastern Europe decreased and then increased with SDI. At the national level, the incidence, prevalence, and DALYs rates are high in the United States and low in India and China. From the 2020 to 2030, most regions is predicted to decline. CONCLUSION: LBP in AYAs is a major global public problem with a high burden. There are large differences in incidence, prevalence and DALYs across SDIs, regions and countries. there is still a need to focus on LBP in AYAs and tailor interventions to reduce the future burden of this condition.

Abstract:Background: Obesity represents a major global health challenge with important clinical implications. Despite its recognized importance, the global disease burden attributable to high body mass index (BMI) remains less well understood. Methods: We systematically analyzed global deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to high BMI using the methodology and analytical approaches of the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021. High BMI was defined as a BMI over 25 kg/m2 for individuals aged ≥20 years. The Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) was used as a composite measure to assess the level of socio-economic development across different regions. Subgroup analyses considered age, sex, year, geographical location, and SDI. Findings: From 1990 to 2021, the global deaths and DALYs attributable to high BMI increased more than 2.5-fold for females and males. However, the age-standardized death rates remained stable for females and increased by 15.0% for males. Similarly, the age-standardized DALY rates increased by 21.7% for females and 31.2% for males. In 2021, the six leading causes of high BMI-attributable DALYs were diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, chronic kidney disease, low back pain and stroke. From 1990 to 2021, low-middle SDI countries exhibited the highest annual percentage changes in age-standardized DALY rates, whereas high SDI countries showed the lowest. Interpretation: The worldwide health burden attributable to high BMI has grown significantly between 1990 and 2021. The increasing global rates of high BMI and the associated disease burden highlight the urgent need for regular surveillance and monitoring of BMI. Abstract:Abstract Purpose We aimed to assess the global, regional, and national burdens of low back pain (LBP) from 1990 to 2019 by gender, age, and the sociodemographic index (SDI) from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study. Methods The number of incident cases, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), age-standardized incidence rates, and age-standardized DALY rates during 1990–2019 were obtained from the GBD 2019 study. The estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) in the age-standardized incidence rates and age-standardized DALY rates were determined to measure the temporal trends of LBP. Results In 2019, there were an estimated 223.5 million cases of LBP and 63.7 million LBP-related DALYs worldwide. During 1990–2019, the age-standardized incidence rate [EAPC = − 0.41; 95% confidence interval (CI) − 0.46 to − 0.36] and age-standardized DALY rate decreased (EAPC = − 0.51; 95% CI − 0.56 to − 0.46) globally. The age-standardized incidence rate of LBP decreased the most in low-middle SDI regions. The age-standardized incidence rate of LBP decreased the most in South Asia (EAPC, − 1.51), East Asia (EAPC, − 0.68), and Australasia (EAPC, − 0.26). The incidence in male subjects was lower than that in female subjects. The largest decreases in the age-standardized incidence rate and age-standardized DALY rate of LBP were observed in India, and China. Conclusions The global age-standardized incidence rate and age-standardized DALY rate of LBP showed a downward trend, especially in East and South Asia. In addition, a heavier burden of LBP was observed in older and female populations.

The most practical to create ships with steering gondolas with an electric power transmission, forming electric propulsion system, in which the energetic connection between the ship's hull with steering gondola carried by an electric cable.

Abstract:Introduction To examine data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 to determine the global burden of osteoarthritis (OA) from 1990 to 2019 that is attributable to high body mass index (BMI). Material and methods Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and age-standardized DALY rates, and their corresponding estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs), were used to compare estimated OA burdens between countries and regions. Moreover, a comparative risk assessment framework was used to estimate the risks attributable to high BMI in terms of DALYs. Results From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized DALY rate for OA attributable to high BMI increased significantly (EAPC = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.44, 1.47). Moreover, from 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized DALY rate and number of DALYs for OA attributable to high BMI increased less in women than in men. From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized DALY rate for OA attributable to high BMI increased the most in South Asia (EAPC = 3.94). From 1990 to 2019, among 204 countries worldwide, the age-standardized DALY rate for OA attributable to high BMI increased the most in Equatorial Guinea (EAPC = 7.42). Also, the burden was higher in high-sociodemographic index (SDI) regions than in low-SDI regions. Conclusions The global burden of OA attributable to high BMI increased significantly from 1990 to 2019. In particular, this burden was higher in women than in men; primarily affected middle-aged and older adults; and was generally greater in high-SDI regions than in low-SDI regions.

Abstract:Objectives: To analyze and describe the spatiotemporal trends of Low back pain (LBP) burdens from 1990 to 2019 and anticipate the following decade’s incidence. Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 Study, we described net drifts, local drifts, age effects, and period cohort effects in incidence and forecasted incidence rates and cases by sex from 2020 to 2029 using the Nordpred R package. Results: LBP remained the leading cause of the musculoskeletal disease burden globally and across all socio-demographic index (SDI) regions. China is the top country. For recent periods, high-SDI countries faced unfavorable or worsening risks. The relative risk of incidence showed improving trends over time and in successively younger birth cohorts amongst low-middle-, middle- and high-middle-SDI countries. Additionally, the age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) of LBP in both sexes globally showed a decreasing trend, but the incident cases would increase from 223 to 253 million overall in the next decade. Conclusion: As the population ages, incident cases will rise but ASIR will fall. To minimise LBP, public awareness and disease prevention and control are needed.

Abstract:Purpose: The increasing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) attributable to high body mass index (BMI) represents both a threat and an opportunity for intervention. Estimates of the global latest trend of high BMI-related NCDs and its association with socioeconomic status can facilitate strategic intervention and inform further research. Methods: This global burden of disease study extracted global, regional, and national data on death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to high BMI-related NCDs from the GBD Study 2017. Secondary analyses were performed by year, age, sex, and specific causes of death and DALYs. The 2017 Socio-demographic Index (SDI) was used as an indicator of national socioeconomic status. The association between age-standardized death or DALYs rate and socioeconomic status were analyzed. Results: Worldwide, 4.7 million deaths and 147.7 million DALYs of NCDs were related to high BMI in 2017, with a projection to 5.5 million deaths and 176.9 million DALYs in 2025. Globally, high BMI-related burden showed an increasing trend with males being more heavily impacted overall. The trend and magnitude of high BMI-related disease burden varied substantially in different geographical and socioeconomic regions. Specifically, the low-middle, middle, and high-middle SDI countries were associated with a higher burden. The leading three causes of DALYs attributable to high BMI in 2017 were ischemic heart diseases, stroke, and diabetes mellitus. Conclusions: High BMI-related burden of NCDs is worsening, particularly in developing countries. Our findings may enhance public awareness of interventions to reduce the diseases burden caused by high BMI.
Time trends in the burden of low back pain and its associated risk factors in China from 1990 to 2019

Abstract:Background From 1990 to 2019, low back pain (LBP) was the leading cause of years lived with disability (YLDs) in China. However, the change patterns of LBP and its risk factors in China remain unclear. Methods Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 were used. We used the join-point regression model and age-period-cohort analysis to evaluate the time trends of attributable risk factors on the burden of LBP. Results In 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4.36 million YLDs of LBP, representing 42.2% of all YLDs of LBP in China, with 2.86 million due to occupational ergonomic factors, 1.74 million due to smoking, and 0.46 million due to high body mass index (BMI). The age-standardized YLD rates of LBP showed downward trends during 1990–2019, while there was a faster decline between 1990 and 1994. The curves of local drifts, which reflected the average annual percentage change across age groups, showed an increasing trend with age for high BMI and smoking, and a downward trend for occupational ergonomic factors. The YLD rates for LBP increased dramatically with age for high BMI, while it reached a peak at 40–60 years old for occupational ergonomic factors, and 65–80 years old for smoking. The period and cohort rate ratios of LBP YLD decreased in the past 3 decades for occupational ergonomic factors and smoking, while increased for high BMI. Conclusions Our results provided strong evidence that there were diverse changing patterns for different risk factors, highlighting the need for risk-specific strategies. The translational potential of this article China has the largest senior population and the fastest aging population in the world. Given that LBP typically occurs in the senior population, there would be an increasing LBP burden on China's health system. This suggests that effective strategies for LBP prevention should be strictly implemented in China, particularly in the senior population, which is of crucial translational potential.

Abstract:Background: High body mass index (BMI) plays a critical role in the initiation and development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Up to now, far too little attention has been paid to the global burden of T2D attributable to high BMI. This study aims to report the deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of T2D related to high BMI in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Methods: Data on T2D burden attributable to high BMI were retrieved from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. The global cases, age-standardized rates of mortality (ASMR), and disability-adjusted life years (ASDR) attributable to high BMI were estimated by age, sex, geographical location, and socio-demographic index (SDI). The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to quantify the trends of ASMR and ASDR during the period 1990–2019. Results: Globally, there were 619,494.8 deaths and 34,422,224.8 DALYs of T2D attributed to high BMI in 2019, more than triple in 1990. Moreover, the pace of increase in ASMR and ASDR accelerated during 1990–2019, with EAPC of 1.36 (95% CI: 1.27 to 1.45) and 2.13 (95% CI: 2.10 to 2.17) separately, especially in men, South Asia, and low-middle SDI regions. Oceania was the high-risk area of standardized T2D deaths and DALYs attributable to high BMI in 2019, among which Fiji was the country with the heaviest burden. In terms of SDI, middle SDI regions had the biggest T2D-related ASMR and ASDR in 2019. Conclusion: The global deaths and DALYs of T2D attributable to high BMI substantially increased from 1990 to 2019. High BMI as a major public health problem needs to be tackled properly and timely in patients with T2D.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal problem globally. Updating the prevalence and burden of LBP is important for researchers and policy makers. This paper presents, compares and contextualizes the global prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) of LBP by age, sex and region, from 1990 to 2017.METHODS: Data were extracted from the GBD (the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study) 2017 Study. Age, sex and region-specific analyses were conducted to estimate the global prevalence and YLDs of LBP, with the uncertainty intervals (UIs).RESULTS: The age-standardized point prevalence of LBP was 8.20% (95% UI: 7.31-9.10%) in 1990 and decreased slightly to 7.50% (95% UI: 6.75-8.27%) in 2017. The prevalent numbers of people with LBP at any one point in time in 1990 was 377.5 million, and this increased to 577.0 million in 2017. Age-standardized prevalence of LBP was higher in females than males. LBP prevalence increased with age, and peaked around the ages of 80 to 89 years, and then decreased slightly. Global YLDs were 42.5 million (95% UI: 30.2 million-57.2 million) in 1990 and increased by 52.7% to 64.9 million (95% UI: 46.5 million-87.4 million) in 2017. YLDs were also higher in females than males and increased initially with age; they peaked at 35-39 years of age in 1990, before decreasing, whereas in 2017, they peaked at 45-49 years of age, before decreasing. Western Europe had the highest number of LBP YLDs.CONCLUSIONS: Globally, LBP is the leading global cause of YLDs. Greater attention is urgently needed to mitigate this increasing burden and the impact it is having on health and social systems.

Abstract:Background: This study aims to evaluate the distribution and changes in the global burden of IS attributable to high body-mass index (BMI) from 1990 to 2021, providing a foundation for the development of targeted prevention and treatment strategies. Methods: Based on the modeling strategies of the 2021 global burden of disease (GBD) dataset, the burden of IS attributable to high BMI was estimated. The assessment covered the global disease burden and its distribution by region, country, development level, age group, and gender. Age-standardized rates, along with the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) in these rates, were utilized to describe this burden and its evolving trends. Results: From 1990 to 2021, although the age-standardized death rate and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rate for IS attributable to high BMI have declined globally, the absolute number of deaths and DALYs nearly doubled, reaching 172,390.65 (95% UI, 347,912.75 to 25,064.57) and 4,439,186.31 (95% UI, 8,647,485.11 to 649,030.21) respectively. Meanwhile, significant disparities in disease burden existed across different regions, genders, and age groups. In high-middle SDI regions, the burden of IS caused by high BMI significantly exceeded that in other regions, while in low-income areas, this burden was rapidly increasing. Additionally, the increase in burden among men was significantly greater than that among women, and the previously concentrated burden in the elderly is now rapidly shifting toward younger groups. Conclusions: The overweight and obese populations continue to present significant challenges in managing the burden of IS. In light of future population growth and aging trends, more effective stroke prevention strategies and practical solutions are urgently needed, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Additionally, given the increasing disease burden among men and younger populations, it is essential to establish targeted preventive measures to address the specific needs of different groups and improve overall health outcomes.
A comparison of the burden of knee osteoarthritis attributable to high body mass index in China and globally from 1990 to 2019

Abstract:Background: Excess body mass index (BMI) plays a key role in the onset and progression of knee osteoarthritis (knee OA). However, the burden of knee OA attributable to high BMI at the global, Chinese, and regional levels have received far too little attention. The aim of this study is to provide evidence to support the design of policy by investigating long-term trends of years lived with disability (YLDs) for knee OA. Methods: To illustrate the trends of YLDs for knee OA attributable to high BMI and the temporal trends of the YLDs rate by age, period, and cohort, Joinpoint regression software and age-period-cohort (APC) were used to analyze the YLDs data of knee OA from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019. Results: In China, there were 549,963.5 YLDs for knee OA attributable to high BMI in 2019, which had increased by 460.7% since 1990. From 1990 to 2019, age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate (ASDR) of knee OA attributable to high BMI trended upwards. The average annual percent change (AAPC) of knee OA attributable to high BMI in China and globe were 3.019, 1.419%, respectively. The longitudinal age curve of the APC model showed that the YLDs rates of knee OA due to high BMI increased with age, and YLDs rates were higher among females than males. The period rate ratios (RRs) of knee OA due to high BMI increased significantly. The cohort RRs of knee OA due to high BMI increased among those born between 1900 and 1970. The net drifts of knee OA attributable to high BMI in China and globe were above 1. Compared with global condition, the net drift values of knee OA attributable to high BMI in China was higher. Compared with females, males had higher net drift value. Countries with high socio-demographic index (SDI) have a much higher burden of knee OA caused by high BMI than countries with low SDI. Conclusion: In China, high BMI is a substantial cause of knee OA, the incidence of which has been increasing since 1990. In addition, women and the elderly are more vulnerable to knee OA caused by high BMI. The Chinese government must take the long-term impact of high BMI on knee OA into account and implement effective public health policies and resort to interventions to reduce the burden as soon as possible.

Abstract:Objective: Exploring changing trends in the burden caused by overweight and obesity among children and adolescents from 1990 to 2019 at the global, regional, and national levels, based on data from the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) 2019. Methods: The annual number and rate of deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with a high BMI among children and adolescents at global, regional, and national levels by age groups, sexes, and the sociodemographic index from 1990 to 2019 were collected from the GBD study 2019. Change percentage for number, and the estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) for rate were calculated to determine the temporal trends. Results: From 1990 to 2019, global high BMI-related deaths decreased by 34% but DALYs increased by 48%. Death rates in females were higher than in males, although both showed decreasing trends. For the rate of DALYs, both sexes showed increasing trends, but since 1999, the rate in males has surpassed that in females. A high BMI had the greatest impact on children under 5 years of age, and the burden in other age groups continued to increase. Regionally, High-income Asia Pacific experienced the fastest decrease in death rate (EAPC=−9.57), and East Asia saw the fastest increase in the DALYs rate (EAPC= 3.47). Globally, as age increases, the proportion of disease burden attributed to a high BMI in females generally increases. Conclusions: Our findings emphasize the urgent need to improve efforts to prevent children and adolescents becoming overweight and obese.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of disease burden attributed to high body mass index (DB-hBMI) from 1990 to 2019 in Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries, in light of increasing hBMI prevalence worldwide. Design: The study was a secondary analysis of global burden of disease 2019 (GBD 2019) that analyzed (using Joinpoint regression analysis) numbers and the age-standardized rate of mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of hBMI-induced diseases and their trends from 1990 to 2019 and in the final decade. Setting: GBD 2019 study data for BRI countries were categorized by country, age, gender, and disease. Participants: GBD 2019 data were used to analyze DB-hBMI in BRI countries. Results: In 2019, China, India, and Russia reported the highest mortality and DALYs among BRI countries. From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized DALYs increased in Southeast Asia and South Asia, whereas many European countries saw declines. Notably, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Vietnam showed the steepest increases, with AAPC values of 4.42%, 4.19%, and 4.28%, respectively (all P<0.05). In contrast, Israel, Slovenia, and Poland experienced significant reductions, with APCC values of -1.70%, -1.63%, and -1.58%, respectively (all P<0.05). The most rapid increases among males were seen in Vietnam, Nepal, and Bangladesh, while Jordan, Poland, and Slovenia recorded the fastest declines among females. Across most BRI countries, the burden of diabetes and kidney diseases related to hBMI showed a significant uptrend. Conclusion: DB-hBMI varies significantly by region, age, gender, and disease type across BRI countries. It can pose a substantial threat to public health.

Abstract:Introduction Gout is an inflammatory and metabolic disease characterized by arthritis and elevation of the serum uric acid (SUA) level. More and more studies have shown that high body mass index (BMI) has become one of the most important risk factors for gout. Material and Methods We used the data of gout burden attributed to high body mass index (BMI) from global burden of disease (GBD) study 2019 to provide insights for reducing the global burden of gout. Results From 1990 to 2019, the prevalence and DALYs of gout caused by high BMI worldwide has been increasing. The burden of gout caused by high BMI is heavier in the elderly male group and regions with high SDI worldwide. Conclusions Our findings provide evidence for the burden of gout caused by high BMI. Developing a weight management plan and lifestyle habits for groups severely affected by gout will effectively reduce the global disease and economic burden.
