Abstract:To meet the requirement of sustainable development, bio-based adsorbents were developed for the removal of dye contaminant. To improve the adsorption capacity of pure sodium alginate (SA) adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB), aromatic bio-based tannin (Tan) was incorporated through the cross-linking with calcium ion. The obtained Tan/SA composite hydrogel beads were characterized with SEM, FTIR and TG, demonstrating that millimeter-sized beads were obtained through calcium cross-linking with enhanced thermal stability. The maximum capacity (247.2 mg/g) at optimal condition (pH = 12, T = 45 °C) was obtained for the 40%Tan/SA adsorbents, with a removal efficiency of 82.4%. This can be ascribed to the electrostatic attraction between SA and MB, as well as the formation of π–π stacking between Tan and MB. The adsorption process for MB is endothermic, and chemical adsorption, the removal efficiency was exceeded 90% after five cycles.

Abstract:The increase in the world population and the decrease in clean water resources increase people's interest in water purification technologies. Many industries, such as the textile industry, leather industry, cosmetics and food industry, color their products with substances such as dyes and pigments. In this study, a cheap, useful, innovative, environmentally friendly, and sustainable adsorbent was developed for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB), one of the dyes that is harmful to the environment. In fruit tree cultivation, in addition to the product, very high amounts of by-products/waste (branches, bark, leaves, fruit seeds, fruit shells, etc.) are produced. In this direction, walnut tree and olive tree wastes were immobilized with chitosan, made magnetic (m-WCH and m-OCH), and the adsorption of MB on the developed adsorbents was examined in a batch system. Characterization of the synthesized biocomposite adsorbents was performed by FT-IR, SEM, EDX and XRD analyzes. It has been thoroughly described how the pH solution of the MB dye compares to the pH PZC of the adsorbent surface. The pH PZC values for m-WCH and m-OCH were 5.2 and 5.5 respectively. MB adsorption of biocomposites depends on the pH of the environment (3–8), amount of adsorbent (2–10 gL −1 ), contact time (5–360 min), temperature (25–55 °C) and initial dye concentration (10–250 ppm) was examined as a function. The obtained data were evaluated with kinetic and isotherm models. Using adsorption equilibrium data obtained from MB adsorption studies using m-WCH and m-OCH biocomposite adsorbents, their suitability to Langmuir, Freundlich, Stachard, Dubinin–Radushkevich and Temkin models was examined. The empirical data of MB adsorption by m-WCH and m-OCH showed agreement with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity for MB by m-WCH and m-OCH was estimated to be 85.47 mg g −1 and 53.48 mg g −1 , respectively. The result showed that a higher adsorption selectivity on m-WCH compares to m-OCH. Among the kinetic models applied, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was identified with the highest regression coefficients. In the light of these results, it was determined that there are new promising adsorbents of natural origin, with higher adsorption capacity, lower cost, and alternatives to commercially used adsorbents in the removal of MB from aqueous media.

Abstract:The existence of organic dyes wastewater had caused serious harm to the environment and human beings. Herein, in this study, a simple and efficient method was selected to synthesize sodium alginate gel beads adsorbent (CPS-Bead) with porous structure and high adsorption performance. Interestingly, the addition of polyamino-modified 3D carbon materials (GO-CNT) enhanced the related properties of gel beads. Moreover, the well-designed adsorbent was used to remove methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), crystal violet (CV), and congo red (CR) from dyes wastewater. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of CPS-Bead on MB, MG, CV and CR could reach the highest of 2191.39 mg/g, 2201.69 mg/g, 1669.11 mg/g and 2096.04 mg/g at 318 K, respectively. The kinetic behavior and the isotherm behavior of CPS-Bead was more consistent with the nonlinear model of pseudo-second-order dynamics and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the thermodynamic data showed that the adsorption process of the four dyes was automatic. In addition, CPS-Bead also demonstrated excellent adsorption performance in cyclic experiments, selectivity experiments and adsorption column experiments, which could selectively and continuously adsorb different dyes. Overall, the prepared gel beads not only showed outstanding adsorption capacity, but also the had an excellent reusability, besides, CPS-Bead had great potential industrial applications.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the use of hydrogels as adsorbent in the removal of methylene blue (MB), a cationic dyestuff commonly used in industry, by adsorption from waste water. Therefore, sodium alginate-modified polyacrylamide-sodium alginate (PAAm/SA) hydrogels with the different concentration of sodium alginate were synthesized by free radical solution polymerization under normal atmospheric conditions. The absorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The absorption and adsorption experiments were performed and the effects of several experimental parameters including pH and contact time upon the adsorption process were evaluated. As a result of swelling tests, PAAm/SA hydrogels swelled in the range of 12.72–25.52 gwater gdry gel−1 in water, while PAAm hydrogel swelled to 8.5 gwater gdry gel−1. Methylene blue adsorption, which showed a rapid increase with increasing pH in the range of pH 2.0–6.0, reached the highest value at pH 7.0. Adsorption equilibrium was investigated by using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. Two kinetic models, (i) pseudo-first-order and (ii) pseudo-second-order kinetic models, were applied to test the experimental data. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model well fitted the kinetic results, suggesting chemisorption as the most probable adsorption mechanism. Adsorption of methylene blue with hydrogels was well fitted with the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating the multilayer adsorption process on heterogeneous surfaces. The prepared hydrogels can be potential candidates for use as absorbents to treat wastewater.

Abstract:The removal of dyes from the aquatic ecosystem is necessary being a major threat to life. For enhanced remediation of methylene blue (MB) dye, a new ternary biopolymer-geopolymer-surfactant composite adsorbent is synthesized by combining phosphoric acid geopolymer (PAGP), calcium alginate (Alg), and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). During the synthesis of the composites, PAGP and SLS were mixed with the alginate matrix, producing porous hybrid beads. The PAGP-SLS-alginate (PSA) beads prepared were characterized using different analytical tools, i.e., scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), surface area and porosimetery (SAP), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). To ascertain the ideal conditions for the adsorption process, a batch reactor procedure was used to investigate the effects of several parameters on MB adsorption, including pH (2, 4, 6, 8, 10), PSA adsorbent dosage (0.06-0.12 g), MB concentration (50-500 mg/L), contact time (15 to 300 min), and temperature (25, 35, and 45 °C). The SEM investigation indicated that ~ 1860 μm-sized PSA beads with 6-8 μm voids are generated. Based on XRD, FTIR, and SAP examinations, the material is amorphous, having numerous functional groups and an average pore size of 6.42 nm. Variation of pH has a little effect on the adsorption process, and the pH of 7.44 was found to be the pHpzc of the PSA beads. According to the findings of the batch study, equilibrium adsorption was obtained in 270-300 min, showing that the adsorption process was moderately slow-moving and effective. The dye adsorption linearly increased with initial dye concentration over concentration range of 50-500 mg/L and reciprocally decreased with rise in temperature. 0.06 g adsorbent dose, 25 °C, pH10, and 270 min were found to be the better conditions for adsorption experiments. Langmuir isotherm fitted well compared to Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR) isotherm models on the experimental data, and the maximum adsorption capacity(qmax) calculated was 1666.6 mg. g-1. Pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics model and multi steps (two) intra particle diffusion (IPD) model fitted well on the adsorption kinetics data. The system's entropy, Gibbs free energy, and change in enthalpy were measured and found to be -109.171 J. mol-1. K-1, - 8.198 to - 6.014 kJ. mol-1, and - 40.747 kJ. mol-1. Thermodynamics study revealed that adsorption process is exothermic, energetically favorable and resulting in the decrease in randomness. Chemisorption is found to be the dominant mechanism as confirmed by pH effect, Langmuir isotherm, PSO kinetics, IPD model, and thermodynamics parameters. PSA beads were successfully regenerated using ethanol in a course of 120 min and re-used for five times. To sum up, the PSA adsorbent's impressive adsorption capability of 1666.66 mg/g highlights its potential as a successful solution for methylene blue removal. The results of this study add to the expanding corpus of information on sophisticated adsorption materials and demonstrate PSA's potential for real-world uses in wastewater treatment and environmental clean-up.

Abstract:A novel hydrogel bead [tannic acid (TA)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA)] with high strength prepared by biocompatible PVA, TA, and biocompatible SA via an instantaneous gelation method was applied to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The obtained TA-PVA/SA hydrogel beads were fully characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and so on. The adsorption performances of TA-PVA/SA hydrogel beads for MB were investigated by changing the factors of TA content, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and temperature systematically. The maximum capacity of TA-PVA/SA hydrogel beads for MB removal was obtained to be 147.06 mg/g at 30 °C, whose capability was better than that without TA. After fitting the adsorbed data, it was basically consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic studies indicated that MB removal was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. It is concluded that the low-cost TA-PVA/SA hydrogel beads as an easily recoverable adsorbent have a great potential on the removal of hazardous dyes from wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, sodium alginate/chitosan/halloysite nanotube composites were prepared by three-dimensional printing and characterized in terms of morphology, viscosity, thermal properties, and methylene blue (MB) adsorption performance. The high specific surface area and extensively microporous structure of these composites allowed for effective MB removal from wastewater; specifically, a removal efficiency of 80% was obtained after a 60 min treatment at an adsorbent loading of 1 g L−1 and an MB concentration of 80 mg L−1, while the maximum MB adsorption capacity equaled 376.3 mg g−1. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were well described by quasi-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. The composites largely retained their adsorption performance after five adsorption–desorption cycles and were concluded to hold great promise for MB removal from wastewater.

Abstract:Water pollution is rising worldwide, necessitating innovative and effective treatment solutions. This study introduces a multicomponent/multifunctional novel nanocomposite synthesized from polyethyleneimine (PEI), graphene oxide (GO), bentonite clay, and MgFeAl-layered triple hydroxide (LTH), termed as AGO/Bentonite/LTH. In this study, the synthesized AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite was utilized to remove azo dyes (methyl orange and crystal violet) from contaminated water samples. The novel AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite was benchmarked against its pristine materials and their binary combinations. The results indicated the superior adsorption performance of the AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite relative to all other adsorbents synthesized and examined herein. All the synthesized adsorbents were characterized using different techniques in order to reveal their textural properties, functional groups, morphology, thermal stability, and crystallinity before applying them to decontaminate wastewater samples contaminated with methyl orange (MO) and crystal violet (CV). The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model predicted that the maximum adsorption capacities of CV and MO onto the AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite are 1705.1 and 1171.8 mg/g, respectively. On the other hand, zeta potential, pH, and FTIR studies suggested the existence of multiple mechanisms governing the adsorption of CV and MO onto the AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite. Thermodynamic results indicated the endothermicity and exothermicity of CV and MO adsorption, respectively. Another interesting finding reported herein is the high reusability of this nanocomposite as demonstrated by the minimal reduction in the removal of these two pollutants with the repetitive use of the nanocomposite. Additionally, the nanocomposite can also be easily and cheaply regenerated via a few rinses with a diluted NaOH aqueous solution. These interesting observations suggest that the synthesized AGO/Bentonite/LTH nanocomposite is a potent material for efficient dye removal from contaminated water bodies.

Abstract:Dye-contaminated water and waste plastic both pose enormous threats to human health and the ecological environment, and simultaneously solving these two issues in a sustainable and resource-saving way is highly important. In this work, a sodium alginate-polyethylene terephthalate-sodium alginate (SA@PET) composite adsorbent for efficient dye removal is fabricated using wasted PET bottle and marine plant-based SA via simple and energy-efficient nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Benefiting from its porous structure and the abundant binding sites, SA@PET shows an excellent methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity of 1081 mg g −1 . The Redlich–Peterson model more accurately describes the adsorption behavior, suggesting multiple adsorption mechanisms. In addition to the electrostatic attractions of SA to MB, polar interactions between the PET matrix and MB are also identified as adsorption mechanisms. It is worth mentioning that SA@PET could be recycled 7 times without a serious decrease in performance, and the trifluoroacetic acid-dichloromethane solvent involved in the NIPS process has the possibility of reuse and stepwise recovery. Finally, the discarded adsorbent could be completely degraded under mild conditions. This work provides not only a composite adsorbent with excellent cationic dye removal performance for wastewater treatment, but also an upcycling strategy for waste PET.

Abstract:Natural macromolecular-based hydrogels have unique advantages in pollutant adsorption due to their biodegradability and abundance of reactive functional groups. However, poor mechanical properties and adsorption capability limit their application. In this paper, Poly-(acrylamide-acrylic acid)/sesbania gum/bentonite (P(AM-AA)/SG/BT) composite hydrogel was prepared by in situ free-radical polymerization and applied to the adsorption for methylene blue (MB) and methylene green (MG). Relevant characterization, performance tests, and model analysis were used to investigate the preparation mechanism and absorption characteristics of MB and MG on P(AM-AA)/SG/BT. Our results indicated that SG, BT, and P(AM-AA) were combined through multiple mechanisms including functional group copolymerization, hydrogen bonding, and structural interweaving, which endowed P(AM-AA)/SG/BT composite hydrogel with good mechanical properties (tensile strength of 116 kPa, tensile elongation of 2645%, and over 90% recovery of compression deformation), high adsorption capacity (1226mg/g for MB and 783mg/g for MG, over 90% of removal rate at a dye concentration of 100mg/L), and good recyclability (the adsorption amount maintaining 86% of the initial amount and the desorption efficiency over 78% after 5 cycles). Adsorption of MB and MG on P(AM-AA)/SG/BT was consistent with the pseudo-second order equation, the intraparticle diffusion model and the Freundlich isotherm model, as well as spontaneous and exothermic for MB adsorption, while spontaneous and endothermic for MG adsorption. Clearly, P(AM-AA)/SG/BT composite hydrogel proved to be an efficient and effective adsorbent in PDW treatments.

Abstract:Dye-related water pollution is a worldwide problem. This work describes a facile fabrication of the super-absorbent sodium alginate hydrogel (SA-Ca hydrogel) with improved chemical stability and biocompatibility. By combining the freeze–thaw process with calcium crosslinking, hydrogel with nanopores ranging from 10 to 200 nm was prepared. The SA-Ca hydrogel presents a swelling ratio of 90.6 g·g −1 . The effects of pH, initial concentration of the methylene blue (MB) concentration, amounts of absorbents, and temperature on adsorption capacity are investigated. At optimized conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 2986 mg·g −1 . The adsorption kinetics are analyzed using different models, and the pseudo-second-order model can be used to describe the kinetic profile. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the MB adsorption processes using SA-Ca hydrogel are favorable, spontaneous, and endothermic. The proposed SA-Ca hydrogel is expected to be an effective absorbent for water treatment without extra pollution.

Abstract:Wastewater contains organic compounds, including dyes, which have potential risks to the environment. Hence, these compound needs to be eliminated from the aqueous solution. In the present study, chitosan-pectin composite (Cs-Pc) was used as an adsorbent to remove methylene blue dye (MB) from synthetic wastewater. To evaluate the parameters affecting adsorption, including the initial MB concentration, solution pH, contact time, and Cs-Pc dose, batch experiments were carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and pH point of zero charges (pH pzc) were applied for characterizations of Cs-Pc. The optimum conditions were obtained with an initial MB concentration of 50 mg L −1 : solution pH ~ 11, Cs-Pc dose: 1.5 g L −1 and 180 min contact time, which caused 97.77% of MB removal. In addition, the removal efficiency of MB was more influenced by pH than by sorbate dose. Also, Cs-Pc had a higher ability to remove MB than chitosan and pectin, probably due to its highly porous structure and rough surfaces that provides active sites and facilitate MB adsorption. The maximum removal efficiency and the adsorption capacity of MB onto Cs-Pc at 500 mg L −1 concentration under optimum conditions were 98.67% and 328.02 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were best described by pseudo-second-order and Freundlich equation, respectively. After four times of recycling, the removal efficiency of MB was above 96%. Electrostatic and pi-pi interactions are the main mechanisms for the removal of MB onto the adsorbent. So the application of Cs-Pc is promising for MB removal from polluted solutions not only due to its strong adsorbing capability but also due to its excellent ability to reuse.

In this direction, fig tree wastes were immobilized with chitosan, made magnetic, and MB adsorption on the developed adsorbent was examined in a batch system. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinker. Characterization of synthesized glutaraldehyde cross-linked chitosan-coated magnetic vegetable waste composite beads (g-CMBW) was carried out by SEM, EDX, FTIR and XRD. In the study, the effects of temperature (25–55 °C), pH (3.0–8.0), initial MB concentration (10–250mg/L), contact time (5–360min) and the amount of adsorbent (2–10 g/L) on MB adsorption with g-CMBW were examined. The optimum conditions obtained were determined as pH 6.0, temperature 25 °C, adsorbent amount 6 g/L, and contact time 120 min. The maximum adsorption capacity in MB removal using g-CMBW composite beads was calculated as 103.1 mg/g according to the Langmuir isotherm model. The temperature studies showed that the adsorption capacity decreased with increasing temperature, showing that the system was exothermic. In light of these results, it was determined that there are new promising adsorbents of natural origin, with higher adsorption capacity, lower cost, and alternatives to commercially used adsorbents in the removal of MB from aqueous media. In this study, we developed a renewable magnetic composite bead as a low-cost pioneer based on a new sustainable biopolymer using chitosan and plant waste. The novelty of this work is based on the development of a new composite adsorbent that can be synthesized in a fast, simple, and environmentally friendly method, not requiring expensive reagents or complex equipment. Another innovation is that methylene blue, a common micropollutant, can be easily removed from polluted water using simple biowaste-based adsorbents by adopting appropriate procedures. It exhibited higher micropollutant adsorption performance compared to most other adsorbents. These results showed that it could be a very effective adsorbent for methylene blue removal from aqueous media.

Abstract:Industrial sectors are main responsible for continually releasing of harmful compounds in the form of wastewater. The potential utilization of bio-waste materials has received great attention to minimize the serious environmental issues. Therefore, the present research is focused to develop an Elaeis guineensis/polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotube (EG/PVA/CNT) composite via a simple polymerization method and tested to remove the dye from aqueous solutions. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterizations were selected to confirm the morphology and chemical structures of composites. The water content measurement and swelling characteristics of EG/PVA/CNT were also elaborated. The evaluation of composites was explored through the elimination of methylene blue (MB) in a batch adsorption scheme including EG loading, pH of MB aqueous solutions, contact time, initial concentration of MB solutions, adsorbent dose and solution temperature. The results revealed that EG-based adsorbents have superior adsorption efficiency of 92.44%. The adsorption kinetics was well explained by pseudo-second-order model, while in adsorption isotherms, Langmuir model was appropriate to demonstrate the MB adsorption data giving superlative removal aptitudes. The thermodynamic results revealed that adsorption onto EG/PVA/CNT was favorable, spontaneous and exothermic in nature, while activation energy informed the physical type of adsorption process. The adsorption mechanism of MB onto EG/PVA/CNT was also proposed. Moreover, EG/PVA/CNT was in stable form with good adsorption capacity and could easily be recycled. Based upon the present research, a strong strategy between EG, CNT and PVA could successfully develop an economical adsorbent for the treatment of different effluents.

Abstract:Clean and safe water resources are essential for environmental safety and human health. Hydrogels and biomass polymers have attracted considerable attention in recent years, considering their nontoxicity, controllable performance, and high adsorption capacity. The interpenetrating network described here is a combination of biomass polymer and hydrogel adsorbent was established, the biomass polymer microspheres were first prepared with the combination of biomass monomer trans-anethole and maleic anhydride copolymer. A simple, environment-friendly, and facile method of incorporating biomass polymer into sodium alginate biopolymer was developed by introducing cross-linking agent calcium chloride and glutaraldehyde into the biomass polymer. Furthermore, the biomass polymer sodium alginate hydrogel (BP@SA/H) was characterized by FTIR, XPS, SEM and XRD. In order to test materials' performance, the removal of pollutants and adsorption study were also investigated after and before adsorption toward metals and dyes in water. We examined the factors influencing the materials adsorption capability, such as initial concentration, time, absorbent amount, and pH. Moreover, the maximum adsorption toward Pb+2 and Cd+2 are 734.9 and 722 mg/g. While the adsorption toward RhB dye are 745 mg/g. In addition, the adsorption results were investigated using the kinetic and isothermal models, demonstrating that biomass polymer hydrogel adsorption is chemisorption. Therefore, the as-developed biomass polymer sodium alginate hydrogel (BP@SA/H) is an exceptional multifunctional material that can be used to remove hazardous pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:Increasing industrial contamination necessitates development of sustainable water treatment solutions. Photocatalysis is a green technology utilizing light-activated materials (photocatalysts), which can degrade pollutants into harmless by-products. It is an emergent need to develop a photocatalyst that presents a significant advancement for sustainable water treatment and non-toxic to the environment. This study investigates the photocatalytic activity and in vitro cytotoxicity of a novel hybrid material comprising of alginate, copper oxide (CuO) and graphitic carbon nitride (gC 3 N 4 ) for methylene blue (MB) degradation. The hybrid material was synthesized by a two-step process: (i) doping of CuO on gC 3 N 4 through co-precipitation method formed CuO-gC 3 N 4 (CG) and (ii) incorporation of CG in the calcium alginate (A) by ionotropic gelation method that is named as ACG. The characteristic features of the synthesized A, CG and ACG were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The optical characteristic of A, CG and ACG was studied using UV-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS). The morphology and elemental composition of ACG was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To assess the environmental impact of ACG, a two-step approach was employed. First, the photocatalytic activity of ACG under UV–visible light (UV–vis) irradiation for MB degradation was evaluated. ACG exhibited photocatalytic activity by achieving 86.26% of degradation efficiency for MB within 60 min. Second, the in vitro cytotoxicity of ACG, MB and MB degraded products towards tilapia gill cell lines were assessed. By comparing the toxicity of the MB and the secondary products, it is concluded that the overall process leads to a sustainable outcome.

Abstract:Abstract The urgent problem to solve is how to design a kind of green and porous adsorbent that can effectively remove dye pollutants in the field of the sewage treatment. The objectives of this investigation are to incorporate zeolitic imidazolate frameworks‐8 (ZIF‐8) particles in situ onto the surface of multiwalled carbon tubes (MWCNTs) and integrate them into an agarose‐sodium alginate (ASA) double network hydrogel. The resulting composite hydrogel beads, denoted as MWCNTs/ZIF‐8/ASA (MZASA), are synthesized using calcium ion crosslinking. The addition of agarose is employed to create a dual‐crosslinked hydrogel, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the ASA hydrogel. By incorporating MWCNTs/ZIF‐8 nanoparticles, the surface area of the MZASA hydrogel is augmented, leading to an enhancement in dye adsorption capacity. In batch sorption mode, the maximum absorbency of the resulting hydrogel beads for methylene blue (MB) is 493.799 mg/g, which was a third greater than that of pure SA beads. Absorption of MB obeys the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting monolayer chemisorption adsorption. Analysis of the thermodynamics proves that the entire adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Moreover, the MZASA hydrogel beads show high selectivity for cationic dyes in the mixed dye test. Hence, the synthesized MZASA hydrogel beads serve as a highly effective, innovative, and reusable adsorbent for eliminating cationic dyes from water‐based solutions.

Abstract:In this study, an eco-friendly and novel hydrogel based on a crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), iota carrageenan (IC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) scaffold, containing a large amount (10-50 wt%) of nanoscale palm fronds (NPF) as additives, for water purification was demonstrated. A life cycle assessment (LCA) findings on NPF as biomass waste incorporated into PVA_PVP_IC polymer matrix was presented, and the results highlight the necessity of focused actions to reduce environmental impact and support the palm waste utilization in a sustainable manner. The multicomponent nanocomposite hydrogels were examined as adsorbents in a system work in batches for methylene blue (MB) and paracetamol (PCT) removal. The results show that, the presence of NPF, which dispersed in the hydrogel PVA_PVP_IC scaffolds containing both covalent and non-covalent cross-linking bonds, greatly enhanced the MB and PCT adsorption efficiency. A response surface methodology (RSM) model was used to find the best operating parameters of contaminant adsorption, including time, adsorbent dose, and starting concentration of pollutants. By using this statistical model, it was found that the optimal conditions for the adsorption reaction to achieve the complete removal of MB are 66.7 h adsorption time duration, 98.5 mg L-1 starting concentration, and an adsorbent dose of 5.9 mg, while for the complete removal of PCT, it is 57.6 h adsorption time duration, 80 mg L-1 starting concentration, and an adsorbent dose of 6 mg. The reusability of the nanocomposite hydrogels were tested for 5 cycles, all showed high adsorption capacity, indicating the potential for practical application of this nanocomposite hydrogel system. This study indicates that the prepared nanocomposite hydrogel raises the standard used for treatment of wastewater and also gives a solution to protect the environment and mitigate global warming.

Abstract:Currently, industrial water pollution represents a significant global challenge, with the potential to adversely impact human health and the integrity of ecosystems. The continuous increase in global consumption has resulted in an exponential rise in the use of dyes, which have become one of the major water pollutants, causing significant environmental impacts. In order to address these concerns, a number of wastewater treatment methods have been developed, with a particular focus on physicochemical approaches, such as adsorption. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of a bio-based material derived from olive oil pomace (OOP) as an environmentally friendly bio-adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB), a cationic dye commonly found in textile effluents. The biobased material was initially characterized by determining the point of zero charge (pHpzc) and using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis was conducted, evaluating the impact of specific physicochemical parameters on MB adsorption, which included a thorough examination of the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. The adsorption process was characterized using Langmuir, Freundlich, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Dubinin Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms. The results suggest that the equilibrium of adsorption is achieved within ca. 200 min, following pseudo-second-order kinetics. The optimal conditions, including adsorbent mass, temperature, bulk pH, and dye concentration, yielded a maximum adsorption capacity of ca. 93% (i.e., 428 mg g−1) for a pomace concentration of 450 mg L−1. The results suggest a monolayer adsorption process with preferential electrostatic interactions between the dye and the pomace adsorbent. This is supported by the application of Langmuir, BET, Freundlich, and D-R isotherm models. The thermodynamic analysis indicates that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. This work presents a sustainable solution for mitigating MB contamination in wastewater streams while simultaneously valorizing OOP, an agricultural by-product that presents risks to human health and the environment. In conclusion, this approach offers an innovative ecological alternative to synthetic adsorbents.
