Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to explore the level of stress, stressors sources, and coping strategies used among female Saudi undergraduate nursing students during their clinical practice. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used. Using a convenience sampling technique, female nursing students in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Alahsa who enrolled in clinical courses were recruited from a governmental university from January to May 2022. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire including socio-demographic characteristics, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Coping Behavior Inventory (CBI). Results: The degree of stress perceived by the 332 participants ranged from 3 to 99 (54.77 ± 0.95). Stress from assignments and workload was the most common type of stressor perceived by nursing students, with a score of 2.61 ± 0.94, followed by stress from the environment, with a score of 1.18 ± 0.47. Meanwhile, the students used staying optimistic as the most adopted strategy, with a score of 2.38 ± 0.95, followed by the transference strategy, a score of 2.36 ± 0.71, and the problem-solving strategy scored 2.35 ± 1.01. The coping strategy of avoidance is positively correlated with all of the stressor types (P < 0.01), while the problem-solving strategy is negatively correlated with stress from peers and daily life (r = -0.126, P < 0.05). Transference is positively correlated with stress from assignments and workload (r = 0.121, P < 0.05), and stress from teachers and nursing staff (r = 0.156, P < 0.01). Lastly, staying optimistic is negatively correlated with stress from taking care of patients (r = -0.149, P < 0.01), and with stress from lack of professional knowledge and skills (r = -0.245, P < 0.01). Conclusions: These research findings are significant for nursing educators to identify nursing students' main stressors and coping strategies used. Effective countermeasures should be taken to promote a healthy learning environment, decrease the level of stressors and improve students' coping strategies during clinical practice.

Abstract:Purpose: Nursing profession is considered as a stressful and demanding job. The purpose of this research was to determine stressors types and degrees over two data collection periods in 2015-2016. Methods: This is a quantitative descriptive research study. A purposive sample of 55 female nursing students (complete 4 th year cohort) from Princess Nourah University took part in this study. Results: The results highlight that the most influential cause of stress were factors related to taking care of patients, teachers and nursing staff. Moreover, nursing students reported increased level of stress comparing them in two different time periods. Conclusions: To overcome these clinical stressors, it requires students to be equipped with competent knowledge, skills and experience in dealing with the changing needs of patients’ condition. Future research should explore nursing students’ beliefs and causes of stress and how it can be avoided by conducting a qualitative research study.

Abstract:Background Clinical hospital stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic are one of the problems that affect the quality of education among first-year nursing students, particularly in the first 6 months of their practice. Objective Assess the types and severity of clinical hospital stressors among first-year nursing students and investigate the relationship between students' clinical stressors and their level of worry from COVID-19. Design A descriptive correlational research design. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, Alexandria's main university hospital. The study included a convenience sample of 200 first-year nursing students. Tools Socio-demographic and academic data of nursing students. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) is used to assess the degree and type of stressors. Results The highest reported types of stressors were stress from the clinical hospital (M = 13.54) and stress from a lack of professional knowledge and skills (M = 13). Concerning the overall stressors, all students experienced a severe degree of stress (M = 116.87). Furthermore, students' age, sex, number of study hours/week, number of assignments/week, and worry from COVID 19 were highly statistically significant with degrees of perceived stress as ( p = 0.000, 0.030). Conclusion Clinical hospital stressors had a significant negative impact on the majority of students' education in the hospital. As well as worrying about COVID 19, positively increased the perceived stressors of nursing students. Recommendations Implement an educational program for the first-year nursing students about clinical hospital stressors during COVID-19 and trained them how they can cope with these stressors by using stress management.

The perception and association between depression and academic stress among female undergraduate nursing students: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Introduction: Academic demands and stressors put nursing students at increasing risk of depression. The aims of the study examine the perceived level of depression and academic stress and investigate the association between these variables among nursing students in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used in this study. Data was collected using depression subscale from DASS-21 scale and the Academic Stress Inventory scale. Results: A total of 237 students participated in the study. Nursing students perceived normal to mild levels of depression. Students perceived moderate levels of academic stress in all subscales, except for time management and test stress which were high. All academic stress subscales had a positive statistically significant correlation with depression. The regression model explains 49.0% of the variance in the depression scale and indicated that the main significant predictor of depression is studying in group stress, followed by self-inflected stress, study year, and sleep problem. The mean score of depression for first year students was significantly different than students in other study years. Discussion: Nurse educators should facilitate group formation and teach students about time-management, problem-solving, negotiation, and coping strategies to deal with academic expectations and demanding situations. Understanding the causes, limiting the exposure to negative influences, and seeking support as needed are important. To enhance the quality of sleep, students should maintain a consistent sleep schedule, while avoiding stimulating activities before bedtime. Future research should focus on a longitudinal study and other variables such as quality of life, satisfaction with the quality of teaching, and support from others.

Abstract:AIM The life of a student may be affected by different stressors in both the internal and external environment. Although people from all walks of life experience stress on daily basis, students are more likely to experience stressful situations because of their academic requirements. To identify stressors among nursing students in Ghana. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 400 students sampled from first year to fourth year students. Students were included in the study if they are above 18 years, nursing students and have been registered by the university for the 2019/2020 academic year. RESULTS A majority of the students (73.0%) perceived themselves to be stressed with academic-related work and cognitive, behavioural and emotional symptoms were highly prevalent among the students. Students enrolled in the regular programme were 0.09 times (p < .0001) less likely stressed than those in the modular stream of the training programme and female students compared to their male counterparts were 2.18 times (p < .0001) more likely feeling stressed. CONCLUSION The students with high cognitive symptoms also show high emotional and behavioural symptoms and vice versa. Nursing training institutions may consider further studies to investigate the impact of stress on academic performances and identify appropriate support students.

Stressors and Coping Strategies of the Saudi Nursing Students in the Clinical Training: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Nursing students often encounter high levels of stress through clinical practice that may cause psychological or emotional problems during their professional life eventually affecting the quality of patient care they provide. The aims of the current study were to identify the level and types of stress perceived by nursing students in their clinical practice and to identify the coping strategies that students used to relieve their stress. A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used in this study. A total of 200 students who were enrolled in the nursing program were taken as study respondents. Research data were collected using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Coping Behavior Inventory (CBI). Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA test, Pearson’s test, and independent sample t -test on SPSS version 22. Findings indicated that nursing students experienced a high level of stress. The most common coping strategy utilized by the students was problem solving, while avoidance was the least frequently used one. Saudi nursing students experienced stress levels above the mean in clinical training. The most common stressors were related to assignments and workload. The study recommends that clinical curriculum requirements and the workload of nursing students should be reviewed.

Abstract:Background: Stress is inevitable. Mild level of stress is needed for better performance among individuals. Nursing and medical undergraduates experience high levels of pressure during their college when compared to students in other arts and science specialties. Numerous factors of stress among applied medical students may be theoretical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental. The objective of this study was to assess sources and level of stress by college of applied medical undergraduates.Methods: A descriptive study was conducted among the female college of applied medical sciences, Prince Sattam Bin Abdul-Aziz university, Wadi Al Dawasir, Saudi Arabia. A study sample of 72 female students of nursing and medical lab sciences were selected using random convenient sampling technique. Primary data was collected using a questionnaire related to sources of stress distributed among the students. Results: The results revealed that 11 (15%) of students had mild level of stress, 51 (56%) of them had moderate and 21 (29%) of them had severe level of stress. Intrapersonal stressors with the mean value of 2.09 (sometimes), interpersonal stressors mean value is 2.0 (sometimes), environmental stressors mean value is 1.4 (never), and academic stressors mean value is 2.5 (often) disturbing stressors for the students.Conclusions: The university should maintain conducive academic environment for better learning, with the focus on the students’ personal and social needs. The administrators should provide adequate resources such as books, computers to do assignments. Nursing college administrators need to take effort to narrow the gap between student’s opportunities, goals, and values to be integrated with that of the university.

Abstract:Literature has documented that student nurses undergo stress in their academic and clinical setting. This raises concerns because stress during undergraduate training may result in psychological or emotional impairment during the nurses’ professional life and ultimately affect the quality of patient care. The Objective of the study was to study the prevalence of stress, and the association between sociodemographic factors, stressors and coping strategies with stress. This was a cross-sectional study on 96-year 1-3 nursing students from a government university done between 2015-2018. Bahasa Malaysia translated The General Health Questionnaire, Stressors in Nursing Student Scale Questionnaire and Brief COPE Questionnaire was used in this study. This study had Malay (95.9%) and female (91.7%) dominated population. The prevalence of stress in student nurses was 25%. No association was reported between sociodemographic factors and stress. Among the 4 stressors educational, clinical, confidence and financial, clinical stressor scored the highest mean 6.40 (SD±3.66). Confidence stressor (AOR=1.26 95% CI 1.04-1.53) was the only stressor associated with stress. The top 3 coping strategies practiced by the student nurses were religion (praying), acceptance and planning. Self-blame (AOR 8.18 95% CI 1.86-35.91) was the only coping strategy associated with stress. Stress management programmes, and workshops on stress and coping strategies should be conducted yearly to ensure a well-balanced environment for good learning experiences and prevent stress related health problems and improved academic performance.

Abstract:Introduction Clinical training allows nursing students to acquire and strengthen their psychomotor abilities, which is an important component of nursing education. The clinical components of nursing training programs were much more demanding than the academic ones. Purposes The purpose of this study was to examine sources of stress-related and coping behaviors during first clinical training among nursing students in the Arab American University. Methods The study was cross-sectional and conducted with a convenience sample of 266 participants of nursing students. Data collection was performed by “Perceived Stress Scale and the Coping Behavior Inventory.” The data were analyzed by using the descriptive, that is, frequency and percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Results The results revealed that the perceived stress mean was 41.2 ( SD = 19.5). The main stressors were taking care of the patients ( M = 11.4 ± 0.85) and teachers and nursing staff ( M = 8.32 ± 5.3). Coping behaviors mean was ( M = 29.0 ± 15.2). The main coping behavior was problem-solving ( M = 9.5 ± 5.6). Conclusion The study confirmed that students perceived moderate levels of stress in their first clinical training, and the most common sources of stress were taking care of the patients and teachers and nursing staff. However, the main coping behavior was problem-solving.
Do academic advising and levels of support affect nursing students' mental health? A cross‐sectional study

Abstract:Aim The current study aimed to identify the association between social support, academic advising and mental health disorders among nursing students. Background Stress and workload can trigger multiple mental health disorders, especially for nursing students. Thus, academic advising and counselling help support students with academic and mental health problems. Design This cross‐sectional study utilized online questionnaires in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Methods Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ‐4) and the Student Academic Advising and Counseling Survey (SAACS) were utilized to measure social support, depression and anxiety and evaluation of academic advising and counselling services, respectively. Results The study included 1134 nursing students (mean age of 20.3 years). Students with higher academic advising satisfaction were 37% less likely to experience depression (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.46–0.85) and mental disorders (OR 0.68, 95% CI 0.50–0.94). Moderate family social support was associated with lower depression (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.37–0.93) and mental disorders (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.33–0.92). Conclusion Academic advising and social support can mitigate mental health disorders among nursing students. These findings will help nurses and post‐secondary providers develop strategies to support nursing students during difficult times.

Abstract:Aims: Nursing and midwifery students experience multiple stressors in the clinical setting that can affect their proper functioning. Therefore, the objective of this research was the effective stressors in clinical education among nursing and midwifery students of Islamic Azad University, Mahabad in 2016. Materials and Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study of applied type. The statistical population was nursing and midwifery students of the Azad University of Mahabad in 2016. The sample size was selected in clinical setting to be 300 person. The data gathering tool was a researcher-made questionnaire consisting of two sections of demographic information and a section of the stressful factors of clinical education in eight domains and 106 items. The validity of this questionnaire was determined by content validity. Hence, the reliability of this tool was confirmed by a test–retest method with a correlation of 0.89. The partial least square (PLS) method, independent t-test, and Friedman test were used for data analysis. Results: The results showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between the interpersonal communication, environmental factors, educational planning, personal–social factors, university education factors, unpleasant experiences, and clinical experiences with stress (P = 0.000). However, there was not a statistically significant relationship between the humiliating experiences and the feeling of tension in students (P ≤ 0.218). Furthermore, Friedman test showed that the most important stressor on students' perception of their stress in the clinical environment is environmental factors. Conclusion: The results of stressful factors in clinical education indicated lack of significance in all areas except for humiliating experiences area. Therefore, the authorities should take necessary steps to control and manage stress in students and increase the quality of education by holding workshops and the formation of the committee or the community to examine these factors, given all the stressful areas in the clinical education setting, especially environmental factors.
Exploring predictors of perceived stress: a cross-sectional study among nursing students during their clinical practice

Abstract:Journal of Research in Nursing, Ahead of Print. Background:Clinical practice is a demanding academic activity for nursing students, and a variety of factors can affect this perception. This study aimed to investigate the predictors of perceived stress among Indonesian nursing students during their clinical practice.Methods:From September to November 2022, this cross-sectional investigation was carried out. Five questionnaires, including the socio-demographic, the PSS, the GHQ, the CBI, the MSPSS and the RSES, were completed by 208 participants. With significance set to p < 0.05, the Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were carried out.Results:Coping strategies (r = 0.20, p < 0.01), overall health (r = 0.50, p < 0.01), social support (r = −0.34, p < 0.01) and self-esteem (r = −0.51, p < 0.01) were all substantially linked with perceived stress. Furthermore, age (β = −0.22, p < 0.001), coping style (β = 0.22, p < 0.001) and self-esteem (β = −0.42, p < 0.001) substantially predicted perceived stress among nursing students.Conclusion:The study's findings revealed strong relationships between perceived stress and general health, coping mechanisms, self-esteem and social support. These results can be utilised as evidence to help educators and other stakeholders develop programmes that effectively manage stress among nursing students during their clinical rotations.

Abstract:Background: Stress has been linked to different life stages. One of those stages is the transition during the college period. Nursing has been identified as one of the challenges that face student, as its deals with human life. In addition, high levels of stress may lead to health problems and academic dissatisfaction. Objective: To explore clinical stressors among nursing students in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This study employed a qualitative study design; therefore, the collection of data was employed using semi-structured face-to-face interviews with nursing students. Data were analyzed through the use of content analysis. Results: Analysis of the data identified three categories of students’ stressors during clinical training: the urge to learn, how to learn communication, and the nature of the hospital environment. Conclusion: As this study highlighted the clinical stressors facing nursing students, recommendations for nursing education and clinical environments are mentioned in order to ease the stressors.
Correlates of Stress and Coping among Jordanian Nursing Students during Clinical Practice in Psychiatric/Mental Health Course

Abstract:Training in psychiatric settings is stressful for nursing students. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlations between the students' characteristics, their stress degrees, stressors and types of coping strategies they experience during training in psychiatric course. A descriptive, correlational, longitudinal design was used. Sixty-five undergraduate nursing students were recruited randomly from five Jordanian universities. Self-report questionnaires were administered at the second semester of the 2012-2013 academic year. The findings showed that students who utilized avoidance or transference strategies reported high stress degrees. Moreover, the results showed that those students who were in the fourth year, with a low family income, who avoid extracurricular activities, with a low academic grade or who registered in other clinical course(s) reported high stress degrees. These findings present a worthy data for the clinical instructors that facilitate students training in psychiatric settings and promote their psychosocial well-being. Abstract:Background: Nursing students often face high levels of stress due to demanding responsibilities during clinical placement. Emotional regulation, the ability to manage and regulate one's emotions effectively, is crucial for nursing students in dealing with stress and maintaining their overall well-being. Additionally, learning motivation plays a vital role in students' engagement and academic success. The current investigation aimed at studying the link that exists among stress, learning motivation, and emotional regulation among Saudi undergraduate nursing students. The study also aimed at investigating the sequential mediating effects that motivation might perform in this association. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional methodology was used in the present research, which recruited 367 Saudi undergraduate nursing students. Results: The results of the ANOVA showed that the level of perceived stress was linearly and negatively correlated with emotional regulation and motivation. Upon conducting structural equation modeling, significant direct and indirect effect pathways were identified between perceived stress, emotional regulation, and motivation, while only indirect pathways were identified between perceived stress and emotional regulation. Conclusions: This study provides evidence of the mediating role of learning motivation in the relationship between perceived stress and emotional regulation among Saudi nursing students. The results highlight the negative impact of stress on emotional regulation and learning motivation and emphasize the importance of addressing motivational factors in interventions aimed at enhancing emotional regulation among nursing students.
Sources of Nursing Students’ Stress and Coping Behaviors during their Clinical Training

Abstract:Clinical practice is an important aspect of nursing education, where nursing students can learn and develop their psychomotor skills. The practical parts of nursing training programs were more stressful than the academic parts. The purpose to identify the sources of stress during clinical training and to determine the relationship between these stress sources and coping behaviors among nursing students at Arab American University Palestine (AAUP). A cross-sectional study, convenience sample with 131 participants from nursing students. The perceived stress level was low to medium with a mean of 47.2 (SD = 20.5). The most common type of stressors perceived was stress from assignment and workload (M= 1.71). The CBI participants’ coping behavior was moderate (M = 35.34. The most common coping behavior utilized by the participants was transference (M= 2.00), while the avoidance was least frequently utilized (M = 1.72). Also, the study confirmed that avoidance, being optimistic, problem-solving, and transference as coping strategies are positively correlated to the stressors. Students perceived low to moderate levels of stress. Students commonly used transference behavior with least the avoidance from the stressful situation to other things to cope with their stress, and they found these methods to be effective.

Abstract:Background: In nursing students, high stress levels can lead to burnout, anxiety, and depression. Our objective is to characterize the epidemiology of perceived stress, stressors, and coping strategies among nursing students in the Middle East and North Africa region. Methods: We conducted an overview of systematic reviews. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, and grey literature sources between January 2008 and June 2020 with no language restrictions. We included any systematic review reporting measurable stress-related outcomes including stress prevalence, stressors, and stress coping strategies in nursing students residing in any of the 20 Middle East and North Africa countries. We also included additional primary studies identified through a hand search of the reference lists of relevant primary studies and systematic reviews. Results: Seven systematic reviews and 42 primary studies with data from Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan were identified. Most studies included nursing students undergoing clinical training. The prevalence range of low, moderate, and high perceived stress among nursing students was 0.8-65%, 5.9-84.5%, and 6.7-99.2%, respectively. Differences related to gender, training period, or the type of tool used to measure stress remain unclear given the wide variability in the reported prevalence measures across all stress levels. Common clinical training stressors were assignments, workload, and patient care. Academic training-related stressors included lack of break/leisure time, low grades, exams, and course load. Nursing students utilized problem focused (dealing with the problem), emotion focused (regulating the emotion), and dysfunctional (venting the emotions) stress coping mechanisms to alleviate their stress. Conclusions: Available data does not allow the exploration of links between stress levels, stressors, and coping strategies. Limited country-specific prevalence data prevents comparability between countries. Reducing the number or intensity of stressors through curriculum revision and improving students' coping response could contribute to the reduction of stress levels among students. Mentorship, counseling, and an environment conducive to clinical training are essential to minimize perceived stress, enhance learning, and productivity, and prevent burnout among nursing students.

Abstract:Background: There is limited evidence on the association between psychological distress, academic stress, and burnout among Saudi nursing students. Clarifying such an association is crucial to understanding the factors associated with psychological distress and developing interventions to prevent it. Aim: To explore the prevalence and association of psychological distress with academic stress and burnout among Saudi nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, and 237 students participated from a nursing college in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Students' demographics; the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale; the Academic Stress Inventory; and the Maslach Burnout Inventory were used for data collection. Results: Most of the participants reported no-to-mild depression, anxiety, and stress. Stress related to studying in groups, time management, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment were the significant predictors of psychological distress, explaining 52.1% of the variance. Conclusions: This study suggest implementing tailored mental health screenings and support services for nursing students, embedding mental health professionals in the program, and using telehealth or mobile apps for remote monitoring to ensure comprehensive care for nursing students. Future research should consider these predictors while designing strategies to decrease psychological distress among students.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: There has been increased attention in the literature about stress among nursing students. It has been evident that clinical education is the most stressful experience for nursing students.AIM: The aim of this paper was to critically review studies related to degrees of stress and the type of stressors that can be found among undergraduate nursing students during their clinical education.METHODS: The search strategy involved the utilization of the following databases: MEDLINE (Medical Literature on-Line), CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), PsycINFO (Psychology Information) and PubMed. Keywords were stress, undergraduate nursing students, clinical practice. The review included those studies published between 2002 and 2013, conducted in any country as long as reported in English, and including a focus on the clinical practice experience of nursing students. Thirteen studies met the eligibility criteria.RESULTS: Four themes were identified: initial clinical experience, comparison between different academic years, cross-cultural comparison, and eustress aspects of clinical experience.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: This review expands current knowledge in the area of stress in clinical settings and calls for further research. Nursing teachers should utilize the findings of this review to direct their students during clinical practice. Moreover, hospital administrators need to promote policies to promote a training environment where students are supported and inspired.
