Abstract:Oral candidiasis is a fungal infection affecting the oral mucous membrane, and this research specifically addresses on a localized treatment through fluconazole-loaded ibuprofen in situ gel-based oral spray. The low solubility of ibuprofen is advantageous for forming a gel when exposed to an aqueous phase. The 1% w/w fluconazole-loaded in situ gel oral sprays were developed utilizing various concentrations of ibuprofen in N -methyl pyrrolidone. The prepared solutions underwent evaluation for viscosity, surface tension, contact angle, water tolerance, gel formation, interface interaction, drug permeation, and antimicrobial studies. The higher amount of ibuprofen reduced the surface tension and retarded solvent exchange. The use of 50% ibuprofen as a gelling agent demonstrated prolonged drug permeation for up to 24 h. The incorporation of Cremophor EL in the formulations resulted in increased drug permeation and exhibited effective inhibition against Candida albicans , Candida krusei , Candida lusitaniae , and Candida tropicalis . While the Cremophor EL-loaded formulation did not exhibit enhanced antifungal effects on agar media, its ability to facilitate the permeation of fluconazole and ibuprofen suggested potential efficacy in countering Candida invasion in the oral mucosa. Moreover, these formulations demonstrated significant thermal inhibition of protein denaturation in egg albumin, indicating anti-inflammatory properties. Consequently, the fluconazole-loaded ibuprofen in situ gel-based oral spray presents itself as a promising dosage form for oropharyngeal candidiasis treatment. Graphical

A novel mucoadhesive film containing probiotic extract for oral candidiasis treatment: Formulation and antifungal evaluation

Abstract:Probiotic strains offer a novel and potentially effective approach to treat oral candidiasis. Buccal mucoadhesive films have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their unique ability to adhere and persist on the oral mucosa, while gradually releasing their encapsulated drug content. Therefore, the aim of the study was to develop mucoadhesive films containing probiotic extract for treatment of oral candidiasis. Mucoadhesive films were fabricated with hydrophilic polymers, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC). Then, films were evaluated regarding their thickness, pH, tensile strength and elongation, swelling, in vitro release and antifungal activity. The type of polymer used had an impact on the mechanical properties, swelling and release of the films. Films prepared using PVA showed significantly higher tensile strength and elongation at break values compared to those prepared using HPMC. However, swelling index increased with enhancing HPMC concentration in the films. The release of probiotic extract from the film prepared with HPMC occurred slowly. Based on these results, films containing 54 % HPMC and 26 % PVA were selected as optimal formulation. Moreover, it was found that optimal film containing probiotic extract could inhibit the growth of Candida albicans. Regarding to the obtained results, probiotic oral adhesive mucoadhesive films can be considered as a promising alternative to traditional methods in the treatment of candidiasis.

Abstract:Fluticasone propionate is a synthetic corticosteroid drug distinguished by its potent anti-inflammatory action with low systemic side effects in comparison to other corticosteroids making it a potential drug for local buccal delivery. The aim of the present study was to design mucoadhesive buccal film containing fluticasone that is aesthetically acceptable and could maintain local drug release for a sustained period to manage the sign and symptoms of severe erosive mouth lesions. Solvent casting technique was used in film preparation. Different polymeric blends were used either alone or in combination with mucoadhesive polymers, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC), or Carbopol 971P at different concentrations. The physicochemical properties, in vitro mucoadhesion time as well as the drug release properties for all prepared formulations were determined. Selected formulations with adequate properties were further examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and subjected to in vivo evaluation. Films containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)/ethyl cellulose (EC) showed acceptable physicochemical properties, homogenous drug distribution, convenient mucoadhesion time, moderate swelling as well as sustained drug release up to 12 h. The biological performance of these formulations was assessed on healthy human volunteers and compared with a prepared mouthwash which showed enhanced pharmacokinetic parameters for the selected films in comparison to the mouthwash. The results revealed that the optimized formulation containing HPMC/EC and 10% SCMC could successfully achieve sustained drug release for 10 h which is considered promising for local treatment of severe mouth lesions.

Abstract:Background:: Candida albicans is the yeast that causes the fungal infection known as candidiasis. One of the standard methods for treating candida is the application of fluconazole. The low solubility of fluconazole in aqueous media is a big problem in the use of this agent. Novel drug delivery systems, such as microemulsions, could be applied to solve this problem. The main aim of this study was to perform statistical optimization of the formulation and physicochemical characterization of fluconazole microemulsion. Methods:: Optimization of the microemulsion formulation was done by using experimental design software, and then fluconazole was loaded onto the best formulation at a concentration of 1 % w/w. The physiochemistry of the microemulsion formulation was assessed by pH measurement, rheology measurement, simultaneous thermal analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results:: The two-level fractional factorial design application demonstrated the optimum formulation to consist of surfactant, co-surfactant, oil content, and water, comprising 58%, 27%, 10%, and 5% of the formulation, respectively. Desirable thermal mass was observed up to 150°C. The formulation was a non-Newtonian shear-thinning liquid in terms of viscosity, with a reported pH between 6.5-7. Conclusion:: Considerably stable, high-quality microemulsion formulations containing fluconazole are presented, which are applicable for antifungal skin candidiasis treatment in clinical trials.

Abstract:Since the local treatment of oral candidiasis usually requires long-term administration of the antifungal drug, an ideal dosage form should be able to maintain the drug release over an extended period, assuring an adequate concentration at the infection site. In this context, we have considered the possibility of a buccal delivery of miconazole nitrate (MN) by mucoadhesive polymeric matrices. The loading of the antifungal drug in a hydrophilic matrix was made possible by taking advantage of the amphiphilic nature of liposomes (LP). The MN-loaded LP were prepared by a thin film evaporation method followed by extrusion, while solid matrices were obtained by freeze-drying a suspension of the LP in a polymeric solution based on chitosan (CH), sodium hyaluronate (HYA), or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). MN-loaded LP measured 284.7 ± 20.1 nm with homogeneous size distribution, adequate drug encapsulation efficiency (86.0 ± 3.3 %) and positive zeta potential (+47.4 ± 3.3). CH and HYA-based formulations almost completely inhibited C. albicans growth after 24 h, even if the HYA-based one released a higher amount of the drug. The CH-based matrix also provided the best mucoadhesive capacity and therefore represents the most promising candidate for the local treatment of oral candidiasis.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of the present study was to formulate a fluconazole cream for the treatment of Candida albicans. The optimized cream formulation was prepared using stearic acid, oleic acid, beeswax and borax. The uniform distribution of the active ingredient fluconazole could be confirmed in all formulated creams. The FC-C-C formulation showed satisfactory spreadability and extrudability. FC-C-C delivered (95.07 ± 15.85)% in only 36 h, and the formulation released the drug by an anomalous diffusion mechanism. The viscosity of FC-C-C was found to be (63.20 ± 0.83) cP. The antifungal study and animal studies confirmed that the prepared formulation is non-irritant and has an enhanced antifungal activity that reduces the side effects of fluconazole. The studies confirm that the prepared formulation may be useful for the treatment of Candida albicans .

Abstract:In this paper, we present results on the sorption and wettability of tablets containing mucoadhesive (Carbopol 974P NF, HEC) and film-forming (Kollidon VA 64) polymers, with fluconazole as a model active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), important from the point of view of designing new mucoadhesive drug delivery systems for potential use for development of mucoadhesive vaginal or buccal dosage forms. Preliminary studies of the powdered polymer mixture with API and the tablets containing the same components in simulated saliva and vaginal fluids were conducted. Wetting properties of the tablets were determined by contact angle measurements using the sessile drop method. On the basis of the measured contact angles, the surface free energy (SFE) was determined according to the Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Käelble (OWRK) approach. The sorption properties of the powders were evaluated by the liquid penetration method. Moreover, in vitro fluconazole release studies were performed using USP 4 apparatus. The composition of the formulation as well as pH of the model fluids were found to significantly influence the surface properties of the tested systems, but simultaneously, composition revealed a weak effect of the above parameters on the rate of drug release from the polymer matrix was observed. It was found that the fluconazole release kinetics for most of the tested tablets can be described by the anomalous or super case II transport mechanism.

Abstract:Currently, pharmaceutical companies are working on innovative methods, processes and products. Oral mucoadhesive systems, such as tablets, gels, and polymer films, are among these possible products. Oral mucoadhesive systems possess many advantages, including the possibility to be applied in swallowing problems. The present study focused on formulating buccal mucoadhesive polymer films and investigating the physical and physical–chemical properties of films. Sodium alginate (SA) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) were used as film-forming agents, glycerol (GLY) was added as a plasticizer, and cetirizine dihydrochloride (CTZ) was used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). The polymer films were prepared at room temperature with the solvent casting method by mixed two-level and three-level factorial designs. The thickness, tensile strength (hardness), mucoadhesivity, surface free energy (SFE), FTIR, and Raman spectra, as well as the dissolution of the prepared films, were investigated. The investigations showed that GLY can reduce the mucoadhesivity of films, and CTZ can increase the tensile strength of films. The distribution of CTZ proved to be homogeneous in the films. The API could dissolve completely from all the films. We can conclude that polymer films with 1% and 3% GLY concentrations are appropriate to be formulated for application on the buccal mucosa as a drug delivery system.

Ocular Mucoadhesive and Biodegradable Sponge-Like Inserts for the Sustained and Controlled Delivery of Voriconazole; Preparation, D-optimal Factorial Optimization and in-vivo Evaluation

Abstract:The aim of this study was to formulate and optimize by statistical means mucoadhesive and biodegradable sponge-like inserts loaded with voriconazole (VCZ) which increases the contact time of the drug with the eye and sustain its release from the formula in a controlled manner. This avoids the pulsed effect reported for the drug suspension and results in reducing the number of drug instillations in the eye with the result of enhancing the patient compliance. Also, the sponge like nature of the insert reduces the foreign body sensation caused by other ocular solid dosage forms. They were prepared using casting/freeze-drying technique using five polymers namely high molecular weight chitosan (CH), sodium alginate (AL), sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC), gellan gum (GG) and xanthan gum (XG). The prepared inserts were subjected to evaluations of their visual appearance, weight variation, drug content, surface pH, in-vitro release (percent drug released after 1h (Q1 (%)), mean dissolution time (MDT) and dissolution efficiency (DE)) in addition to kinetic analysis of the release data, water uptake, mucoadhesion and rheology of the forming plain polymer solution at the maximum rate of shear. The independent variables of the D-optimal factorial design were the polymer type and concentration while Q1 (%), MDT, DE, % water uptake after 15 minutes and rheology at the maximum rate of shear were chosen as dependant variables. The performed optimization process using design expert software showed an optimum formula consisting of 2 % GG. It showed slow release behavior compared to the drug suspension. FTIR and DSC studies showed that there is no interaction between VCZ and GG. The optimum formula has good in-vitro mucoadhesive properties and pH in the safe ocular range. Moreover, it showed promising in-vivo results of rapid hydration and gelling in addition to good mucoadhesive behavior when instilled in the eye, high ocular safety and biocompatibility, sustained antifungal activity in comparison to the drug suspension and finally biodegradation. So, it may be taken into consideration as an outstanding carrier for the ocular delivery of VCZ.
Development of mucoadhesive microspheres for intranasal delivery of fluconazole as an alternative treatment of cryptococcal meningitis infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency

Abstract:Introduction: Cryptococcal meningitis is a deadly disease with few treatment options. Its incidence is still high and closely linked to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This study aimed to develop a mucoadhesive microsphere delivery system for fluconazole for the intranasal route. Method: Microspheres of mucoadhesive fluconazole formulation variables such as different amounts of drug concentration and polymer concentration were prepared by a simple emulsion-crosslinking method. The prepared microspheres' surface was characterised by SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and evaluated for particle size, entrapment efficiency, production yield, infrared spectroscopic study, in-vitro muco-adhesion, and in-vitro drug release. Results: The results showed that formula 1 is the optimal mucoadhesive microsphere preparation, with a particle size of 56.375m, a spherical surface shape, an entrapment efficiency of 99.96%, and a greater mucoadhesive capability during 6-hour evaluation. Furthermore, wash-off examination revealed that the mucoadhesive ability of this delivery system has a long duration and may release the active material at the right time. Conclusion: The result of the researches suggesting that the formulation of mucoadhesive microspheres of fluconazole could be used to treat cryptococcal meningitis infection in HIV/AIDS patients.
Mucoadhesive delivery systems for oral candidiasis treatment: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract:Objectives This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to evaluate the clinical and mycological effectiveness of mucoadhesives as vehicles for drugs or natural products in the treatment of oral candidiasis. Materials and methods The search for articles was carried out in the Medline/PubMed, SCOPUS, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and SciELO databases before August 2023. We selected the studies, extracted the data, evaluated the study quality, graded the evidence, performed the risk of bias, and carried out meta‐analysis. Results A total of 389 potentially relevant articles were identified, and 11 studies (1869 participants) met the inclusion criteria of the systematic review. The overall risk of bias was considered low. The most common presentation of mucoadhesives was tablets, with miconazole being the most frequently drug used in the delivery system. Mucoadhesives demonstrated comparable efficacy with topical or systemic antifungal agents, with no significant differences between treatments in terms of clinical (RR = 0.907; 95CI = 0.3–1.297; p = 0.591; I2 = 64.648) or mycological (RR = 0.95; 95CI = 0.667–1.360; p = 0.789; I2 = 73.271) efficacy. Conclusions Mucoadhesives may be a suitable alternative to conventional treatments, with the advantage of reducing the frequency of application by up to 5 times and the daily dosage by up to 20 times.

Abstract:In this research, 3D-printed antifungal buccal films (BFs) were manufactured as a potential alternative to commercially available antifungal oral gels addressing key considerations such as ease of manufacturing, convenience of administration, enhanced drug efficacy and suitability of paediatric patients. The fabrication process involved the use of a semi-solid extrusion method to create BFs from zein-Poly-Vinyl-Pyrrolidone (zein-PVP) polymer blend, which served as a carrier for drug (miconazole) and taste enhancers. After manufacturing, it was determined that the disintegration time for all films was less than 10 min. However, these films are designed to adhere to buccal tissue, ensuring sustained drug release. Approximately 80% of the miconazole was released gradually over 2 h from the zein/PVP matrix of the 3D printed films. Moreover, a detailed physicochemical characterization including spectroscopic and thermal methods was conducted to assess solid state and thermal stability of film constituents. Mucoadhesive properties and mechanical evaluation were also studied, while permeability studies revealed the extent to which film-loaded miconazole permeates through buccal tissue compared to commercially available oral gel formulation. Histological evaluation of the treated tissues was followed. Furthermore, in vitro antifungal activity was assessed for the developed films and the commercial oral gel. Finally, films underwent a two-month drug stability test to ascertain the suitability of the BFs for clinical application. The results demonstrate that 3D-printed films are a promising alternative for local administration of miconazole in the oral cavity.
Development and evaluation of wafer loaded with sertaconazole solid dispersion for the treatment of oral candidiasis

Abstract:Candidiasis is one of the most common fungal infections of oral cavity in humans, causing great oral discomfort, pain and aversion to food. To develop more effective antifungal systems for the treatment of oral candidiasis, an oral mucoadhesive wafer containing sertaconazole solid dispersion (STZ-SD) was developed in this study. Dispersion of STZ in Soluplus® as a solubility enhancement excipient was done by melting, solvent evaporation and freeze drying method at various STZ to Soluplus® ratios. The optimized STZ-SD was then incorporated in the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) gel, xanthan gum gel, or their combination to prepare the lyophilized wafers. The swelling capacity, porosity, and mechanical, release and mucoadhesive properties of the wafers, together with their antifungal activity, were then evaluated. The melting method sample with the ratio of 8:1 showed the best results in terms of saturation solubility and dissolution rate. The STZ-SD-composite wafer exhibited higher hardness and mucoadhesion, as compared to those made of the SCMC polymer. The STZ-SD-wafer also exhibited a greater antifungal effect when compared to the STZ-wafer. The present study, thus, suggested that the STZ-SD-wafer could serve as a novel effective delivery system for oral candidiasis treatment.

Preparation, Optimization, and Evaluation of Hyaluronic Acid-Based Hydrogel Loaded with Miconazole Self-Nanoemulsion for the Treatment of Oral Thrush

Abstract:Miconazole nitrate (MZ) is a BCS class II antifungal poorly water-soluble drug with limited dissolution properties and gastrointestinal side effects. Self-nanoemulsifying delivery system-based gel of MZ can improve both solubility and oral mucosal absorption with enhanced antifungal activity. The study aims to formulate MZ self-nanoemulsion (MZ-NE) and combine it within hyaluronic acid-based gel. MZ solubility in various oils, surfactants, and cosurfactant used in NE formulations were evaluated. Mixture design was implemented to optimize the levels of NE components as a formulation variable to study their effects on the mean globule size and antifungal inhibition zones. Further, the optimized MZ-NE was loaded into a hyaluronic acid gel base. Rheological behavior of the prepared gel was assessed. Ex vivo permeability of optimized formulation across buccal mucous of sheep and inhibition against Candida albicans were examined. Mixture design was used to optimize the composition of MZ-NE formulation as 22, 67, and 10% for clove oil, Labrasol, and propylene glycol, respectively. The optimized formulation indicated globule size of 113 nm with 29 mm inhibition zone. Pseudoplastic flow with thixotropic behavior was observed, which is desirable for oral gels. The optimized formulation exhibited higher ex vivo skin permeability and enhanced antifungal activity by 1.85 and 2.179, respectively, compared to MZ-SNEDDS, and by 1.52 and 1.72 folds, respectively, compared to marketed gel. Optimized MZ-NE hyaluronic acid-based oral gel demonstrated better antifungal activity, indicating its potential in oral thrush pharmacotherapy.

Abstract:The aim in this study was to develop and evaluate a nanofluconazole (FLZ) formulation with increased solubility and permeation rate using nanosuspensions. The FLZ nanosuspensions were stabilized using a variety of stabilizing agents and surfactants in various concentrations. The FLZ nanosuspension was characterized in vitro using particle size, zeta potential, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and solubility. In addition, the ex vivo ocular permeation of FLZ through a goat cornea was analyzed. The results showed that the particle size of all nanosuspension formulations was in the nanometer range from 174.5 ± 1.9 to 720.2 ± 4.77 nm; that of the untreated drug was 18.34 μm. The zeta potential values were acceptable, which indicated suitable stability for formulations. The solubility of the nanosuspensions was up to 5.7-fold higher compared with that of the untreated drug. The results of the ex vivo ocular diffusion of the FLZ nanosuspensions showed the percentage of FLZ penetrating via the goat cornea increased after using Kollicoat to stabilize the nanosuspension formulation. Consequently, when using a nanosuspension formulation of Kollicoat, the antifungal activity of the drug strengthens.

Optimization of a Mucoadhesive Vaginal Gel Containing Clotrimazole Using a D-Optimal Experimental Design and Multivariate Analysis

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop a suitable clotrimazole (CLT)-loaded mucoadhesive vaginal gel (CLT-MVG) for topical applications in vaginal candidiasis. Ten CLT-MVG formulations were prepared, consisting of mixtures of acid polyacrylic (Carbopol 940) and polyethene oxides, Sentry Polyox WSRN 1105 or 750, according to an experimental D-optimal design, and CLT was suspended at a ratio of 1%. The prepared CLT-MVG formulations were studied in vitro, and the formulation containing Carbopol 940 0.89% combined with PEO 1105 1.39% was identified with the optimal rheological and in vitro bioadhesion properties, ensuring the prolonged release of CLT, with a similarity factor greater than 50, indicating dissolution profile similarity for three batches of the optimized formulation. This optimized formulation showed a pH in the tolerance range, and an adequate ex vivo mucoadhesion time, while the FT-IR studies revealed no interactions between the excipients and CLT. The microscopic analysis identified a mean particle size of suspended CLT of 5.24 ± 0.57 μm. The in vitro antifungal activity of the optimized formulation was tested on twenty strains of Candida albicans and proved to be better compared to a marketed clotrimazole preparation, showing a greater inhibition effect (p < 0.05). The optimized formulation could be a good candidate for the local treatment of vaginal mycosis.
Formulation and Evaluation of Novel Hybridized Nanovesicles for Enhancing Buccal Delivery of Ciclopirox Olamine

Abstract:Ciclopirox olamine (CPO) is a topical wide-spectrum antimycotic agent that possesses antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. Loading CPO into a hybridized vesicular system is expected to enhance its buccal permeation and hence, therapeutic activity, whereas the frequent administration and side effects are reduced. Vesicular systems with high penetration ability were prepared based on cholesterol, Lipoid S45 or Phospholipon 90H, with span 60 while incorporating a penetration enhancer (Labrafac or labrasol) followed by full assessment of their size, entrapment efficiency, and drug release profiles. The optimum formulation, composed of Lipoid S45 and Labrafac, possessed the smallest vesicle size (346.1 nm), highest entrapment efficiency (94.4%), and sustained CPO release pattern, and was characterized for its morphology and thermal properties. This powerful mixture of the penetration enhancers (Lipoid S45 and Labrafac) in the designed hybridized vesicles was thoroughly investigated for their characteristics after being incorporated in bioadhesive gel. Moreover, enhanced antifungal activity was demonstrated either upon testing the designed formulation on agar plates or in vivo upon treating infected rabbits with the proposed formulation. Results suggest that the presented bioadhesive gel incorporating the CPO-loaded vesicles can be a promising delivery system that can offer a prolonged localized antifungal treatment with enhanced therapeutic effect.
In Silico Guided Nanoformulation Strategy for Circumvention of Candida albicans Biofilm for Effective Therapy of Candidal Vulvovaginitis

Abstract:Candidal vulvovaginitis involving multispecies of Candida and epithelium-bound biofilm poses a drug-resistant pharmacotherapeutic challenge. The present study aims for a disease-specific predominant causative organism resolution for the development of a tailored vaginal drug delivery system. The proposed work fabricates a luliconazole-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier-based transvaginal gel for combating Candida albicans biofilm and disease amelioration. The interaction and binding affinity of luliconazole against the proteins of C. albicans and biofilm were assessed using in silico tools. A systematic QbD analysis was followed to prepare the proposed nanogel using a modified melt emulsification-ultrasonication-gelling method. The DoE optimization was logically implemented to ascertain the effect of independent process variables (excipients concentration; sonication time) on dependent formulation responses (particle size; polydispersity index; entrapment efficiency). The optimized formulation was characterized for final product suitability. The surface morphology and dimensions were spherical and ≤300 nm, respectively. The flow behavior of an optimized nanogel (semisolid) was non-Newtonian similar to marketed preparation. The texture pattern of a nanogel was firm, consistent, and cohesive. The release kinetic model followed was Higuchi (nanogel) with a % cumulative drug release of 83.97 ± 0.69% in 48 h. The % cumulative drug permeated across a goat vaginal membrane was found to be 53.148 ± 0.62% in 8 h. The skin-safety profile was examined using a vaginal irritation model (in vivo) and histological assessments. The drug and proposed formulation(s) were checked against the pathogenic strains of C. albicans (vaginal clinical isolates) and in vitro established biofilms. The visualization of biofilms was done under a fluorescence microscope revealing mature, inhibited, and eradicated biofilm structures.

Abstract:This research aimed to develop miconazole-based microemulsions using oleic acid as a natural lipophilic phase and a stabilizer mixture comprising Tween 20 and PEG 400 to solubilize miconazole as an antifungal agent known for its activity in oral candidiasis and to improve its bioavailability. The formulation and preparation process was combined with a mathematical approach using a 23-full factorial plan. Fluid and gel-like microemulsions were obtained and analyzed considering pH, conductivity, and refractive index, followed by extensive analyses focused on droplet size, zeta potential, rheological behavior, and goniometry. In vitro release tests were performed to assess their biopharmaceutical characteristics. Independent variables coded X1-Oleic acid (%, w/w), X2-Tween 20 (%, w/w), and X3-PEG 400 (%, w/w) were analyzed in relationship with three main outputs like mean droplet size, work of adhesion, and diffusion coefficient by combining statistical tools with response surface methodology. The microemulsion containing miconazole base–2%, oleic acid–5%, Tween 20–40%, PEG 400–20%, and water–33% exhibited a mean droplet size of 119.6 nm, a work of adhesion of 71.98 mN/m, a diffusion coefficient of 2.11·10−5 cm2/s, and together with remarked attributes of two gel-like systems formulated with higher oil concentrations, modeled the final optimization step of microemulsions as potential systems for buccal delivery.
