Abstract:Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially lethal disease. Syncope or seizure as a presenting symptom of PE is very difficult to diagnose. We report a patient with PE presenting recurrent transient loss of consciousness including both syncope and seizure. A previously healthy 51-year-old woman with unremarkable family history and personal history was referred to our hospital for evaluation of recurrent transient loss of consciousness. Half a month before admission, she had approximately 60 seconds of loss of consciousness with urinary and fecal incontinence when getting up in the morning. She had no tonic-clonic activity. She was brought to the local hospital. There in the afternoon she experienced another transient loss of consciousness the same as the previous episode in the morning. Three days before admission, she encountered a third lapse in consciousness. Her husband witnessed the 60 seconds spell characterized by tonic bilateral upgaze with head twitching to the right upper and extensor posturing of all four extremities. Then she was transferred to our hospital from the local hospital. On physical examination, she was alert without evidence of respiratory distress and showed no signs of cyanosis. Her blood was 110/70 mmHg without orthostatic change. The chest examination revealed no abnormal findings. There was no hepatomegaly or splenomegaly on abdominal examination. And neurologic examination was also normal. Objective tests including a head CT and brain MRI were normal. The electroencephalogram (EEG) was also unremarkable. The level of D-dimer was 1018 μg/L. A Doppler scan of the lower extremities revealed no deep venous thrombosis. A chest CT showed vague opacities in the upper lobe of right lung and bilateral small pleural effusions. The ECG revealed a sinus tachycardia and an echocardiogram showed elevated pulmonary artery pressure with normal left and right ventricles. And Hotler did not reveal long Q-T interval or any arrhythmias. On the sixth hospital day during defecating in the morning, she suddenly fell to the ground and was witnessed by an approximately 30 seconds spell characterized by tonic bilateral upgaze and extensor posturing of all four extremities without urinary and fecal incontinence. Postictally, she complained of weakness and denied chest pain or dyspnea. On examination, she was tachycardic, tachypneic, and normotensive. She had a pulse oximetry value of 100% while receiving 30% oxygen. Two hours later, she became hypoxic and hypotensive and required intravenous administration of pressor agents. She had a pulse oximetry value of 86% while receiving 100% oxygen by face mask, becoming obviously cyanotic and progressive dyspnea. Emergent CT angiograms confirmed PE (Figure 1). She was subsequently treated with bolus urokinase and followed by subcutaneous injection of low molecular weight heparin, which resulted in clinical improvement. She was discharged home on the eighteenth hospital day with a regimen of warfarin.Figure 1.: Contrast-enhanced CT angiograms show bilateral pulmonary embolism (arrows).Here we report a patient with recurrent PE which resulted in recurrent attacks of syncope and seizure, as emboli were detected in both left and right pulmonary arteries. PE triggered vaso-vagal reflex, ventricular failure, impaired left ventricular filling, and arterial hypotension were the mechanisms involved in our patient.1,2 D-dimer test and CT angiograms are now widely used in diagnostic algorithms for the evaluation of PE, and prompt medications with thrombolytic therapy and anticoagulation might be life-saving.3
Dabigatran Use after Argatroban for Heparin-induced Thrombocytopenia with Thrombosis: A Case Series and Literature Review

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenia following the use of heparin, which contributes to a high limb-amputation rate and mortality if not appropriately handled. There is growing evidence suggesting that novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) may be effective for treating HIT.METHODS:We described five rare cases of patients with HIT associated with deep vein thrombosis treated with dabigatran, a member of NOACs. We also reviewed representative cases and literature investigating the use of NOACs to treat patients with HIT to further discuss the efficacy and safety.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:Following the treatment of dabigatran after argatroban, the platelet count of patients with HIT gradually elevated and reached the normal range eventually. There was no incidence of new symptomatic, objectively-confirmed arteriovenous thromboembolism observed within the 90-day-period follow up. The patient in case 3 presented with gastric bleeding after dabigatran treatment and died in the end. The results suggested that dabigatran use after argatroban may be effective in the treatment of patients with HIT. However, safety should be reconsidered since severe complications were observed in case 3.
Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis Due to Low-molecular-weight Heparin-induced Thrombocytopenia

Abstract:Introduction: Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is an immune-mediated complication of heparin exposure. A limited number of studies have reported cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) as the presenting thrombotic event induced by HIT, only one of which occurred with exposure to low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH), with death as outcome. Here, we present a unique case of LMWH-induced HIT leading to CVST but resulting in good clinical outcome. Case report: A 52-year-old woman received subcutaneous LMWH for deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis while in rehabilitation following kyphoplasty for spinal fracture related to recent trauma. On postoperative day 15, she developed acute onset altered mental status with significant agitation and nonsensical speech and was found to have brain imaging findings suggestive of CVST. Work-up revealed a drop in platelets associated with HIT, which did not improve off heparin products and with steroids, requiring intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, likely due to an overlapping immune thrombocytopenic purpura. Patient was managed on an argatroban drip until platelet count normalized and was able to transition to warfarin. Her clinical outcome was very favorable with near-normal neurological exam except for subtle cognitive changes. Conclusions: This unique case of LMWH-induced HIT leading to CVST but resulting in good clinical outcome highlights the importance of linking CVST with HIT and of establishing the need for early alternative antithrombotic therapeutic strategies.
False-Negative Platelet Factor 4 Antibodies and Serotonin Release Assay and the Utility of Repeat Testing in the Diagnosis of Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia and Thrombosis

Abstract:Objective: To report a case of false-negative serological tests in the diagnosis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) followed by a brief review of the literature on this topic. Case presentation: A 75-year-old Caucasian female patient was admitted with a traumatic right ankle fracture that required open reduction and internal fixation. Despite postoperative subcutaneous heparin chemoprophylaxis, she developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) on day 4 and subsequently started on continuous heparin infusion. On day 5, she suffered a stroke from a complete occlusion of the right common carotid artery with tandem occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery. She underwent successful thrombectomy of both arteries. The proposed stroke mechanism was paradoxical embolism through a patent foramen ovale. Over the next few days, thrombocytopenia was noted, the heparin drip was stopped, and HIT antibodies (antibodies targeting the complex of platelet factor 4 and heparin; PF4-H AB) and serotonin release assay (SRA) tests were sent. Because of the suspicion for HIT, she was started on bivalirudin with subsequent improvement in platelet count. Initial PF4-H AB and SRA tests were negative, bivalirudin was stopped, and heparin was restarted. Subsequently, her platelets trended down, again raising clinical suspicion of HIT. Repeat PF4-H AB and SRA testing resulted positive. Conclusions: A positive SRA in the appropriate context is considered for the diagnosis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. This case report highlights that false-negative serological evaluation is possible early in the course of the disease. Repeat testing is recommended in patients with high clinical suspicion.

Abstract:Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a rare and life-threatening autoimmune-mediated adverse drug reaction seen in patients who are exposed to various forms of pharmacological heparin, including unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Despite the presence of thrombocytopenia, these patients face the risk of clot formation and bleeding simultaneously. Prompt cessation of heparin and the initiation of non-heparin anticoagulants are important for the patient's survival. Typically, clinical diagnosis of HIT is necessary, and waiting for lab test results, which can take days, may not be always feasible. Here, we present a case of an unusual presentation of type II HIT, complicated by significant thrombocytopenia, pulmonary hemorrhage, and cardiac arrest after receiving intravenous (IV) heparin bolus during an elective cardiac ablation procedure for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Abstract:A 78-year-old man presented with an eight-hour history of chest distress. Electrocardiograph and serum cardiac enzymes were suggestive of acute inferior myocardial infarction with right ventricular infarction. The patient, who underwent emergency percutaneous coronary intervention, suffered from thrombocytopenia presenting with cerebral infarction and myocadial reinfarction during haparin exposure. The laboratory test for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) specific antibodies (heparin-platelet factor, PF4) was positive. The case was diagnosed as arteries thrombosis due to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia; the patient died after cessation of heparin.

Abstract:RATIONALE:Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a common antibody-mediated adverse reaction that occurs after heparin exposure. However, few case reports exist regarding nonantibody-mediated HIT.PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES:An 81-year-old female diagnosed with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) presented with atypical presentation of non antibody-meditated HIT after using heparin during hemodialysis.INTERVENTIONS AND OUTCOMES:Patient was initiated on hemodialysis and presented with thrombocytopenia following administration of heparin during dialysis. After ruling out all other causes of thrombocytopenia, HIT was suspected to be the cause. Patient's 4Ts score was 6 points, and Naranjo adverse drug reaction probability scale was a score of 10. However, enzyme-linked immunoassay for platelet factor 4 (PF4)/heparin antibodies was negative, indicating non-antibody mediated HIT. Patient eventually continued hemodialysis without heparin.LESSONS:This patient case presented a rare presentation of HIT type I reaction due to heparin and demonstrated the importance of timely recognition of thrombocytopenia, appropriate diagnosis and management, and possible existence of a new atypical or subtype of HIT reaction.
Magnetostructural correlation for rational design of Mn(II) hybrid-spin complexes.

Abstract:The magnetic properties of a series of manganese(II) diacetylacetonate and dihexafluoroacetylacetonate hybrid-spin complexes with neutral pyridine-based organic radicals were characterized theoretically by DFT calculations. Three stable radicals, in which a radical group is bound in either para or meta position with respect to the pyridine nitrogen atom, were considered. The correct stable structures and multiplets of the complexes were obtained by full geometry optimization starting from an ideal structure. A total of three important geometry descriptors of the complexes were monitored and related to their magnetic characteristics. These structural parameters are (i) the torsion angle governing the conjugation of the organic radical m-PyNO (anti versus gauche), (ii) the coordination geometry of the acetyl acetonate ligands around the metal ion (square versus rhombic), and (iii) the relative orientation of the organic radical with respect to the acetyl acetonate plane (parallel versus perpendicular). It was found that the magnetic properties are not sensitive to the orientation of the radicals with respect to the equatorial plane but do depend on the conformation of the organic radicals. Even a spin switch between the ferromagnetic (S = (7)/(2)) and antiferromagnetic (S = (3)/(2)) ground state was found to be feasible for one of the complexes upon variation of the organic radical geometry, namely, the dihedral angle between the organic radical moiety and the pyridine ring. The pattern of molecular orbital overlap was determined to be the key factor governing the exchange coupling in the modeled systems. Bonding π-type overlap provides antiferromagnetic coupling in all complexes of the para radicals. In the meta analogues, the spins are coupled through the σ orbitals. A low-spin ground state occurs whenever a continuous σ-overlap pathway is present in the complex. Ferromagnetic interaction requires σ-π orthogonality of the pyridine atomic orbitals and/or π-antibonding Mn-pyridine natural orbital overlap. Using an estimate of the donor-acceptor energy stabilization, the affinity of a given Mn(II) d-orbital to mix with the sp(2) orbital from pyridine can be predicted.
Preimplantation diagnosis of single disorders.

Abstract:Preimplantation diagnosis of inherited and chromosomal diseases provides an option for couples at risk for conceiving genetically abnormal fetus to avoid a birth of an affected child without the need for a prenatal diagnosis and selective abortion of affected fetus (1-3). In some countries this might be the only way to the prevention of genetic disease, as abortion is not acceptable procedure. Even in those countries where prenatal diagnosis is practiced for many years, there is also concern that existing genetic programs based on prenatal screening will lead to increasing number of abortions. On the other hand, the possibilities for genotyping oocytes and cleaving embryos open a new prospect for genetic diagnosis before pregnancy, making genetic programs more ethically acceptable in any social setting. This will make preimplantation diagnosis the method of choice in the community based programs for prevention of genetic disease in the future, as well as a useful addition to assisted reproduction technologies, at least for IVF patients of advanced maternal age.

Abstract:Heparin, a naturally occurring polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycans (GAG) family, is ubiquitously found in mast cells. Unfractionated heparin is the least processed form of natural GAG, purified from animal tissue. In a 67-year-old female patient diagnosed with hypertension and asthma, who suffered a femoral fracture due to a fall, intravenous heparin sodium was administered for thromboembolic treatment in the postoperative period following closed reduction. Subsequently, respiratory distress, loss of consciousness, and cardiac arrest occured following profound hypotension. The patient, whose clinical findings were evaluated as anaphylaxis, was successfully resuscitated with prompt intervention. Despite immune-mediated reactions and Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT) being commonly encountered side effects in clinical practice, it is crucial for all healthcare professionals to recognize that widely used anticoagulant agents such as heparin sodium can lead to fatal complications.
Positive Heparin/PF4 Antibodies and High Mortality Rate: a Retrospective Case-Series Analysis

Abstract:Introduction: Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a potentially lethal complication of unfractionated or low-molecular weight heparin therapy. We aimed to determine the incidence and mortality rate of patients with positive heparin/platelet factor 4 (PF4) antibodies, which is a rapid detection test of HIT. Methods: Coronary artery bypass grafting and mitral and aortic valve surgeries were evaluated. Cardiopulmonary bypass was employed in all patients. The diagnosis of HIT was based on immunological assays. Postoperative complications, mortality rates, and the causes of death were specified in patients with positive heparin/PF4 antibodies. Results: Postoperative thrombocytopenia was detected in 257 patients. Twenty of these patients undergoing open heart surgery were included in the final analysis. Antibodies against heparin/PF4 complex were positive in 20 patients. The mean body mass index was 28.8±2.3 kg/m2, mean value of left ventricular ejection fraction was 48.3±6.7%, cardiopulmonary bypass time was 113.0±35.0 min, aortic cross-clamping time was 88.0±32.7 min, mean intensive care unit length of stay was 10.9±4.9 days, mean preoperative platelet count was 307.250±88528 platelets/microliter, and mean postoperative platelet count was 243.050±89.354 platelets/microliter. The mean duration of heparin exposure was 6.9±2.9 days. The mortality rate was 45% (nine patients) and 1.2% (three patients) in heparin/PF4 complex positive and negative patients, respectively. Conclusion: Although the incidence of HIT was low in patients undergoing open heart surgery, an increased rate of early mortality was observed in patients with positive heparin/PF4 antibodies.
Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia in Patients Undergoing Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Abstract:Background: Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a serious, immune-mediated adverse drug reaction to unfractionated heparin (UFH) affecting also patients undergoing venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). Although the association between VA-ECMO support and the development of thrombocytopenia has long been known and discussed, HIT as one underlying cause is still insufficiently understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to further investigate the epidemiology, mortality, diagnosis, and clinical management of HIT occurring in VA-ECMO patients treated with UFH. Methods: We conducted a retrospective single-center study including adult patients (≥18 years) with VA-ECMO support in the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) of the University Hospital of Munich (LMU) between January 2013 and May 2022, excluding patients with a known history of HIT upon admission. Differences in baseline characteristics and clinical outcome between excluded HIT (positive anti-platelet factor 4 (PF4)/heparin antibody test but negative functional assay) and confirmed HIT (positive anti-PF4/heparin antibody test and positive functional assay) VA-ECMO patients as well as diagnosis and clinical management of HIT were analysed. Results: Among the 373 patients included, anti-PF4/heparin antibodies were detected in 53/373 (14.2%) patients. Functional HIT testing confirmed HIT in 13 cases (3.5%) and excluded HIT in 40 cases (10.7%), corresponding to a prevalence of confirmed HIT of 13/373 (3.5%) [1.6, 5.3] and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 24.5% for the antibody screening test. The platelet course including platelet recovery following argatroban initiation was similar between all groups. One-month mortality in patients with excluded HIT was 14/40 (35%) and 3-month mortality 17/40 (43%), compared to 5/13 (38%) (p > 0.999), and 6/13 (46%) (p > 0.999) in patients with confirmed HIT. Neurological outcome in both groups measured by the cerebral performance category of survivors on hospital discharge was similar, as well as adverse events during VA-ECMO therapy. Conclusions: With a prevalence of 3.5%, HIT is a non-frequent complication in patients on VA-ECMO and was not associated with a higher mortality rate. HIT was ultimately excluded by functional essay in 75% of VA-ECMO patients with clinical suspicion of HIT and positive anti-PF4/heparin antibody test. Argatroban seems to be an appropriate and safe therapeutic option for confirmed HIT-positive patients on VA-ECMO support.

Abstract:Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is a profoundly dangerous, potentially lethal, immunologically mediated adverse drug reaction to unfractionated heparin or, less commonly, to low-molecular weight heparin. In this comprehensive review, the authors highlight heparin-induced thrombocytopenia's risk factors, clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnostic principles, and treatment. The authors place special emphasis on the management of patients requiring procedures using cardiopulmonary bypass or interventions in the catheterization laboratory. Clinical vigilance of this disease process is important to ensure its recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. Misdiagnosis of the syndrome, as well as misunderstanding of the disease process, continues to contribute to its morbidity and mortality.
Evaluating Diagnostic Algorithms for Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia using Two Combined Automated Rapid Immunoassays

Abstract:Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is an autoimmune disorder caused by antibodies against platelet factor 4 (PF4) and heparin complexes. Rapid immunoassays (IAs) for detection of these antibodies mark a milestone in HIT diagnosis, despite a higher false-positive rate compared with functional platelet-activation assays. However, combining different rapid IAs may help to improve their diagnostic specificity. Here, we compared the individual performance of the latex immunoturbidimetric assay (LIA; HemosIL HIT-Ab [PF4-H]; sensitivity 91.7%, specificity 68.4%) and chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA; HemosIL AcuStarHIT-Ab [PF4-H]; sensitivity 92.4%, specificity 85.8%) with their combined performance using two unique diagnostic algorithms in a single prospective cohort of suspected HIT patients. Using the simultaneous algorithm adapted from Warkentin et al, the combined LIA–CLIA had a sensitivity of 99.0% and specificity of 64.3%. The sequential algorithm adapted from Rittener-Ruff et al was applied in two theoretical scenarios to reflect real-world circumstances in diagnostic laboratories where access to clinical information is limited: (1) assuming all patients had an intermediate 4Ts score and (2) assuming all patients had a high 4Ts score. This algorithm correctly predicted HIT in 94.5% (high 4Ts) and 96.0% (intermediate 4Ts) and excluded HIT in 82.6% (high 4Ts) and 80.1% (intermediate 4Ts) of patients in either scenario, respectively. Although both combined algorithms improved diagnostic performance of individual IAs, the simultaneous algorithm showed fewer false predictions (7.9%) than the sequential algorithm (intermediate 4Ts: 37.6% and high 4Ts: 41.5%) and proved more practical as it does not rely on physician evaluations. Our findings highlight the importance of accounting for clinician and interlaboratory variability when evaluating diagnostic tests for HIT. Abstract:IntroductionClinically relevant bleeding occurs three times as frequently as recurrent venous thromboembolism in the modern early treatment of pulmonary embolism (PE) with fixed-dose, unmonitored anticoagulants. Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is monitored and adjusted to assure efficacy and minimize bleeding risk, but low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is not. PE requires more anticoagulant than isolated deep venous thrombosis. Speculating that PE with low clot burden could lead to excess bleeding with unadjusted LMWH treatment but not with UFH, we compared PE patients receiving either UFH or LMWH with high and low clot burden for clinically significant bleeding in an observational study.Materials and MethodsPatients with acute PE at multiple Chinese teaching hospitals had been randomized to UFH or LMWH for initial treatment. These treatment cohorts had baseline measurement of pulmonary artery obstruction (PAO) score, which was prospectively separated into quartiles, lowest to highest PAO. All patients were followed for bleeding episodes, which were subsequently analyzed by quartile of PAO.ResultsTwo hundred seventy-four patients divided between the two groups had similar efficacy and safety outcomes (12 clinically significant bleeds in the UFH group vs 15 in the LMWH group). LMWH recipients with the smallest clot burdens (lowest PAO quartiles) had highest bleeding rates (Cochran-Armitage trend test, P trend=0.048), but there was no such trend for UFH recipients.ConclusionsFor UFH, excess anticoagulant pro-hemorrhagic potential is down-adjusted via activated partial thromboplastin time monitoring, but for LMWH it is not. For PE patients at high bleeding risk, UFH may be safer if the clot burden is small.

Abstract:We report a case of a 77-year-old woman with massive pulmonary embolism associated with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Before developing a pulmonary embolism, the patient underwent gastrectomy due to gastric cancer and received subcutaneous heparin calcium for deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis for 5 d. Then, thrombectomy with cardiopulmonary bypass using full heparinization was successfully performed. The patient was definitively diagnosed with this condition postoperatively, based on elevated serum antibody levels, in addition to pre- and postoperative thrombocytopenia and thrombosis. Intravenous heparin therapy was switched to argatroban. Although it is uncommon, clinicians should consider this condition in patients with a history of heparin exposure.

Abstract:Objective: To discuss a case of adrenal insufficiency (AI) caused by heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) and subsequent adrenal hemorrhage. Methods: We describe the case of a patient who developed postoperative HIT, which went undetected until the patient presented with fulminant adrenal crisis. We provide here an overview of the work-up, diagnosis, and treatment of HIT-associated AI. Results: HIT is a rare cause of bilateral adrenal hemorrhage, and subsequent AI secondary to HIT is often clinically unsuspected until overt hemodynamic collapse occurs. Conclusions: Lack of early detection and appropriate treatment of HIT-induced AI can lead to significant patient morbidity and mortality. Awareness of this clinical condition is key to early recognition and treatment. Abstract:Objectives: Cardiogenic shock (CS) is associated with high mortality. Patients treated for CS mostly require heparin therapy, which may be associated with complications such as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). HIT represents a serious condition associated with platelet decline and increased hypercoagulability and remains a poorly researched field in intensive care medicine. Primary purpose of this study was to: 1) determine HIT prevalence in CS, 2) assess the performance of common diagnostic tests for the workup of HIT, and 3) compare outcomes in CS patients with excluded and confirmed HIT. Design: Retrospective dual-center study including adult patients 18 years old or older with diagnosed CS and suspected HIT from January 2010 to November 2022. Setting: Cardiac ICU at the Ludwig-Maximilians University hospital in Munich and the university hospital of Bonn. Patients and interventions: In this retrospective analysis, adult patients with diagnosed CS and suspected HIT were included. Differences in baseline characteristics, mortality, neurologic and safety outcomes between patients with excluded and confirmed HIT were evaluated. Measurements and main results: In cases of suspected HIT, positive screening antibodies were detected in 159 of 2808 patients (5.7%). HIT was confirmed via positive functional assay in 57 of 2808 patients, corresponding to a prevalence rate of 2.0%. The positive predictive value for anti-platelet factor 4/heparin screening antibodies was 35.8%. Total in-hospital mortality (58.8% vs. 57.9%; p > 0.999), 1-month mortality (47.1% vs. 43.9%; p = 0.781), and 12-month mortality (58.8% vs. 59.6%; p > 0.999) were similar between patients with excluded and confirmed HIT, respectively. Furthermore, no significant difference in neurologic outcome among survivors was found between groups (Cerebral Performance Category [CPC] score 1: 8.8% vs. 8.8%; p > 0.999 and CPC 2: 7.8% vs. 12.3%; p = 0.485). Conclusions: HIT was a rare complication in CS patients treated with unfractionated heparin and was not associated with increased mortality. Also, HIT confirmation was not associated with worse neurologic outcome in survivors. Future studies should aim at developing more precise, standardized, and cost-effective strategies to diagnose HIT and prevent complications.
