Abstract:Background: Over the past 50 years, the content and structure of antenatal education classes have varied to reflect social norms of the time, the setting and context in which they have been held and who has facilitated them. In recent times, antenatal and parenting education classes have become a smorgasbord of information, offering a range of diverse content. Where and how parents-to-be may access formal antenatal and parenting education classes are also varied. Even before the lockdown challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, many antenatal and parenting education classes had become available and accessible online. While the flexibility and accessibility of this option are apparent, scant research to date has reported on parents’ experiences of undertaking online antenatal education. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to explore new parents’ experiences of engaging in online antenatal education, and to discover how consumers of online antenatal education perceive it should be designed and delivered. Design/Methods: A mixed-methods design was used for this study, which was conducted with 294 past enrolees in a range of online antenatal and early parenting education programmes delivered by one private provider in Australia. The past enrolees were invited to participate in the study by email, wherein a link to an online information sheet and survey containing closed- and open-ended questions was provided. The responses to the open-ended questions that are reported in this article were analysed using a thematic approach that involved coding, sub-categorizing and then categorizing the data. Results: A total of 108 participants provided qualitative data about the delivery and design of online antenatal education and information. The data were captured in three themes: video control and content, accessibility and pre-/intra-programme support. Conclusions: The results of this study provide important insights for the development of online antenatal education programmes and courses that will be of interest to antenatal educators, maternity services and maternity care policy developers. Specifically, millennial parents want trustworthy and accurate antenatal education that is delivered in a framework that aligns with and builds on adult-learning principles. The diversity of families and of expectant parents’ learning styles is also important to recognize in antenatal education curricula.
The Impact of Text-Based and Video Discussions on Student Engagement and Interactivity in an Online Course

Abstract:Learning in an online classroom can be optimized when teaching methods focus on student engagement with course content and student-student interactivity. Social learning is a challenge in any online learning environment, but it is realistic with the appropriate selection of discussion modalities. Textbased discussions have been traditionally used, but is this the most effective format to enhance learning outcomes? Video-based discussions have been utilized to supplement the traditional discussion, but the true impact of this newer format has not been explored. Online graduate students enrolled in a nursing ethics course were exposed to both discussion formats during their academic term and were subsequently surveyed on their perceptions of each modality in terms of engagement and interactivity. Students felt that the text-based discussions were more engaging and interactive than the video-based discussions, although the results could have been skewed based simply on a student preference for the familiar format. Keeping in mind the practical applicability of video-based discussions and the potential benefits to the students with this teaching method, it is in the best interest of student learning to continue using this modality moving forward. As online educators strive to optimize learning outcomes for students, it is imperative that social learning through engagement and interactivity is considered when implementing new teaching methods into the virtual learning environment.

Women's experiences of online antenatal education: An integrative literature review

Abstract:Aim: To identify what is currently known about how women experience online antenatal education. Design: Integrative literature review. Review methods: This integrative review applied the five-stage methodological framework outlined by Whittemore and Knafl (2005), supporting rigour in problem identification, selection and critical appraisal of quality literature, data analysis and synthesis of findings. Data sources: A literature search was conducted in May/June 2022, utilizing databases including OVID Embase, CINAHL, Joanna Briggs Institute EBP database, Nursing and Allied Health database, Wiley Online Library, Google scholar search engine and related reference lists. The search was limited to English language and primary research articles published in the last 10-year period (2012-2022). Results: 12 articles met inclusion criteria. Three primary themes were identified: Comprehensibility: Looking back - understanding women's needs and preferences; Manageability: In the moment - flexibility versus social connection; and Meaningfulness & sustainability: Looking forward - the future of digital maternity education. Conclusion: Findings identified a marked digital divide for women accessing online antenatal education, placing vulnerable women at risk of continuing inequity. E-health literacy frameworks need to be implemented to create genuine accessibility, comprehensibility and cultural responsiveness to best meet the needs of users. Implications for the profession and/or health care consumer: As digital health is an emerging field, there is strong evidence that online antenatal education requires further evaluation to better meet the needs of pregnant women and their support people. Enhancing digital health literacy for health professionals will also promote a greater understanding for how to uphold and support the socio-technical dimensions of online service delivery. Abstract:When the social distancing guidelines, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused universities to close campuses, there was a rapid shift in the course delivery methods of human gross anatomy laboratory sessions. Courses were delivered online, and this change created new challenges for anatomy faculty to engage students effectively. This profoundly impacted student-instructor interactions, the quality of the learning environment, and successful student outcomes. Because of the importance of student interaction and engagement for hands-on laboratory courses like anatomy, which rely on cadaver dissections and in-person learning communities, as well as the novel opportunity, this qualitative study sought to explore the faculty perspectives of transitioning their in-person laboratory sessions online and unearth their experience with student engagement in this new teaching format. The Delphi technique was used to explore this experience in two rounds of qualitative inquiry using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, identifying codes and building themes. The study utilized indicators of student engagement in online courses to formulate four themes: instructor presence, social presence, cognitive presence, and reliable technology design and access. These were constructed based on the factors faculty used to maintain engagement, new challenges they faced, and strategies deployed to overcome these challenges and engage students in the new learning format. These are supported by strategies such as using video and multimedia, ice-breaker activities, chat and discussion features, immediate and personalized feedback, and virtual meeting via synchronous sessions. These themes highlight important lessons that faculty designing online anatomy laboratory courses can use to guide their course design, and institutions and instructional design faculty can use to inform best practices and faculty development efforts. Additionally, the study calls for further research to design a standardized and global assessment tool that measures student engagement in the online learning environment.

Abstract:Distance instruction has a long history in the U. S. higher education. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutions worldwide quickly adopted online learning modalities. A student’s feeling of isolation contributes to the high dropout rate in online classrooms. Carefully planning and redesigning online courses could effectively engage students in the course content and prompt active interactions between students and their peers and instructors. This paper presents a mixed-method research study to investigate the effectiveness of a redesigned healthcare administration graduate course online. Quantitative and qualitative data are collected from various sources to triangulate the findings. The findings derived from this study indicate an overall positive view from students toward this revised course integrated with multiple assessment formats. As adult learners, students can gain a solid foundation of knowledge presented in the revised course and apply the knowledge they learned to their jobs. There are some lessons learned for future course revisions in our program that could be empirical evidence for other institutions to implement and better their online courses.

Abstract:Distance education over the years has been defined by the ability of students to learn at any time, from anywhere. Thus, it is not surprising that most online courses rely solely on asynchronous text-based online communication, such as email and discussion forums. However, the COVID- 19 pandemic and the rise of emergency remote teaching have sparked an increased interest in using web conferencing software (e.g., Zoom, WebEx, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams) to hold live synchronous meetings, often on a set day and time each week, instead of asynchronous discussions. But as convenient as it can be to move classroom instruction to live synchronous meetings, instructors and students have quickly experienced some drawbacks to using this mode of instruction. Given this problem, we set out to curate a list of strategies to improve the use of live synchronous meetings based on the literature and our combined experience designing and teaching online over the years. In this paper, we describe some affordances and constraints of live synchronous meetings and then describe some strategies that instructors can use to improve their use of these meetings, whether that be in a blended, remote, or online course.

Abstract:Online learning is convenient for many learners; it gives them the possibility of learning without being restricted by attending a particular classroom at a specific time. While this exciting opportunity can let its users manage their life in a better way, many students may suffer from feeling isolated or disconnected from the community that consists of the instructor and the learners. Lack of interaction among students and the instructor may negatively impact their learnings and cause adverse emotions like anxiety, sadness, and depression. Apart from the feeling of loneliness, sometimes students may come up with different issues or questions as they study the course, which can stop them from confidently progressing or make them feel discouraged if we leave them alone. To promote interaction and to overcome the limitations of geographic distance in online education, we propose a customized design, Tele-instruction, with useful features supplement to the traditional online learning systems to enable peers and the instructor of the course to interact at their conveniences once needed. The designed system can help students address their questions through the answers already provided to other students or ask for the instructor's point of view by two-way communication, similar to face-to-face forms of educational experiences. We believe our approach can assist in filling the gaps when online learning falls behind the traditional classroom-based learning systems.

Abstract:Background and Objectives: Fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs) are evidence-based means of tracking observable biomarkers of a woman’s fertility for the purpose of reproductive health monitoring and family planning. However, medical education regarding FABMs is limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a 4-week, two-part online elective on students’ knowledge of FABMs, confidence in explaining and offering them to patients, and anticipated behaviors in future practice. Methods: The online elective, “FABMs for Family Planning and Women’s Health,” was delivered from August 2020 to May 2023. Students completed pre- and postknowledge surveys. Paired t tests and the Wilcoxon signed rank test were used for analysis of the data. Results: A total of 571 students completed the elective, and 462 students completed both pre- and posttest surveys (response rate=81%). Students’ knowledge of FABMs increased significantly. Posttest scores increased by a mean of 9.02 for Part A and 5.95 for Part B. We identified a significant increase in students’ confidence discussing FABMs to avoid pregnancy, achieve pregnancy, monitor reproductive health, and address reproductive health concerns. At the completion of the elective, students were significantly more likely to offer FABMs as an option for most or all women. Conclusions: This online elective addresses the knowledge gap in FABMs and was effective in improving students’ knowledge of FABMs and their confidence and willingness to offer these methods to patients for family planning and management of common women’s health conditions.

Teaching pathophysiology to diverse students using an online discussion board

Abstract:Communication on the internet offers teachers a unique method for promoting learning among students who are challenged by numerous factors such as linguistic and cultural considerations. This article describes the use of out-of-class online discussions to promote active student learning among a diverse group of baccalaureate nursing students enrolled in a large lecture class. Student-to-student and teacher-to-student asynchronous threaded discussions occurred out of class. Students earned class points by posting and responding to classroom topics. By the end of the 15-week semester, there were approximately 790 messages on the bulletin board. Eighty-five percent of the 64 students participated in this assignment. Of the 64 students, approximately 50% were moderate to high users of the activity and 14% did not participate at all. There were no statistical differences between native English-speaking and non-native English-speaking students and their preference for study partners, interest, or experience with the internet. These initial results suggest that this assignment, based on electronic discussions, promoted greater participation and feedback among this diverse nursing student population. Despite the potential isolation of internet and e-mail-based communications, this computer-based technology may, ironically, facilitate an important shift from teacher-orchestrated to student-centered learning.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to review Chickering and Gamson's principles of good practice in teaching and to illustrate their applicability to nursing online education delivery. An additional purpose is to present examples of teaching methods used by faculty to promote engagement in online education courses during the pandemic. The original 7 best practices in education, including ( a ) encourages contact between students and faculty, ( b ) develops reciprocity and cooperation among students, ( c ) uses active learning techniques, ( d ) gives prompt feedback, ( e ) emphasizes time on task, ( f ) communicates high expectations, and ( g ) respects diverse talents and ways of learning, remain evidence-based guidelines today. The authors recommend the addition of 2 new best practices: ( a ) incorporating assignment flexibility to meet student learning preferences; and ( b ) applying learning to real-life situations. Having evidence-based guidelines for supporting the role of a teacher in the online learning setting is of paramount importance.

Abstract:This study explores the integration of design thinking into online problem-based learning (PBL) within the context of nursing education, leveraging Google Jamboard as a facilitative interactive tool. By prioritizing creativity, empathy, and iteration, this innovative approach seeks to bolster student motivation and satisfaction. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved third-year nursing students and compared the efficacy of traditional PBL methods against a hybrid model that integrates design thinking principles. Notably, the experimental group's interaction with Google Jamboard significantly enhanced their engagement, resulting in notable improvements in both motivation and satisfaction. The findings underscore the benefits of merging online PBL with design thinking, particularly when supported by digital tools, in creating a more vibrant and effective learning environment. This methodology not only stimulates active learning but also fosters vital competencies such as critical thinking and collaboration, which are crucial in the nursing profession. The results of this study advocate for the implementation of cutting-edge teaching methodologies in nursing education and pave the way for further investigation into the enduring impacts of this educational amalgamation.

Abstract:Online learning is an educational process which takes place over the Internet as a form of distance education. Distance education became ubiquitous as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020. Because of these circumstances, online teaching and learning had an indispensable role in early childhood education programs, even though debates continue on whether or not it is beneficial for young children to be exposed extensively to Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This descriptive study demonstrates how a preservice teacher education course in early childhood education was redesigned to provide student teachers with opportunities to learn and teach online. It reports experiences and reflections from a practicum course offered in the Spring Semester of 2020, in the USA. It describes three phases of the online student teachers' experiences–Preparation, Implementation, and Reflection. Tasks accomplished in each phase are reported. Online teaching experiences provided these preservice teachers with opportunities to interact with children, as well as to encourage reflection on how best to promote young children's development and learning with online communication tools.

Abstract:PROBLEM: Complex physiological processes are often difficult for midwifery students to comprehend when using traditional teaching and learning approaches. Online resources for midwifery education are limited.BACKGROUND: Face to face instructional workshops using simulation have had some impact on improving understanding. However, in the 21st century new technologies offer the opportunity to provide alternative learning approaches. Virtual and artificial realities have been shown to increase confidence in decision making during clinical practice.AIM: Explore the impact of using three-dimensional (3D) visualisation in midwifery education, on student's application, when educating women about the birth of the placenta, and membranes.METHODS: Face to face individual interviews were performed, to collect deep, meaningful experiences of students, learning about the third stage of labour.FINDINGS: Prior clinical experiences impacted on student's ability to articulate how they would discuss birth of the placenta and membranes, and the process of haemostasis with women.DISCUSSION: The narrative findings of this pilot study identified ways that students traditionally learn midwifery, through theory, and clinical practice. Interview narratives illustrated how midwifery students who had previous experiences of witnessing birth, had superior ability to discuss the third stage of labour with women. While students with limited birth experiences, found the 3DMVR assisted them in their understanding of the physiology of the third stage of labour.CONCLUSION: In an environment of increasing technological advances, clinical placements remain an essential component of midwifery education.

Twelve Tips for COVID-19 friendly learning design in medical education

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused educational institutions around the world to close their doors and move their teaching and learning into the online space. For many medical educators, who usually rely on face-to-face and blended instruction, this presents a challenge. By rethinking learning design, medical educators can ensure a smooth transition of their subjects into the online space. However, because of the immersive nature of medical education, not all teaching and learning activities can be delivered online. This paper outlines twelve tips using evidence-based educational practices and a student-centred approach. The twelve tips presented and discussed in this paper can help medical educators to transition to online learning and maintain the integrity of their subjects. They can also promote student self-regulation, help develop graduate attributes, and generally enhance learning experiences during pandemic social distancing. Finally, these tips can be used to rethink medical education in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract:The Family Journal, Ahead of Print. We adapted previous descriptions on couples counseling experiential learning practices to an online classroom in counselor education. Specifically, we utilized two doctoral teaching assistants in a quarter-long couple role-play scenario and incorporated reflecting and co-counseling teams. The adapted strategies included attention to sociocultural aspects that addressed working with a queer couple among other salient identities. We offer the strengths and challenges of the approach and discuss implications for marriage, couple, and family counselor educators.
Improving Prelicensure Student Learning and Experience With Interactive Online Learning Modules

Abstract:Background: Fundamentals of Nursing students at a large school of nursing in the Midwest reported difficulty using their course textbooks. There was also an increase in course failures and a decrease in performance on a Fundamentals of Nursing National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®) preparatory proctored examination. Method: A pilot project was implemented to evaluate the effectiveness of interactive, online learning modules compared to textbook readings on student performance, access and use of resources, and student experience. Results: Following the pilot there was a significant improvement in course grades among traditional but not accelerated students using the modules compared to those using the textbook. Students reported that the modules were more engaging, cost-effective, and appealing to various learning styles. Weaknesses identified were the module lengths and technological concerns. Conclusion: The online, interactive modules engaged students with course materials, reduced costs, and may have changed student performance.
