Abstract:Electron spin polarization is identified as a promising avenue for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the bottleneck that limits the energy efficiency of water-splitting. Here, we report that both ferrimagnetic (f-Fe3O4) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (s-Fe3O4) catalysts can exhibit external magnetic field (Hext)-induced OER enhancement, and the activity is proportional to their intrinsic magnetic moment. Additionally, the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect was utilized in synergy with Hext to get a maximum enhancement of up to 89% improvement in current density (at 1.8 V vs RHE) with a low onset potential of 270 mV in s-Fe3O4 catalysts. Spin polarization and the resultant spin selectivity suppress the production of H2O2 and promote the formation of ground state triplet O2 during the OER. Furthermore, the design of chiral s-Fe3O4 with synergistic spin potential effect demonstrates a high spin polarization of ∼42%, as measured using conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM).

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) frequently hinder advances in Zn-air battery-dependent technologies. In this study, the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect was employed to achieve spin alignment, resulting in a reduction in the reaction overpotential for chiral nanocatalysts compared to their compositionally similar achiral counterparts. Moreover, we demonstrated that chiral L-type Co@CoO catalysts (Co@CoO-L) could achieve outstanding oxygen electrocatalytic performances, overcoming thermodynamic limitations, by manipulating the spin alignment of the reaction intermediates during the catalytic reaction. Zn-air batteries assembled with Co@CoO-L exhibited excellent performances, including a high specific capacity (839.5 mA h g −1 @ 10 mA cm −2 ), large open-circuit voltage (1.47 V), and long-term cycling stability (800 h). This work provides new insights into the construction excellent catalysts by exploiting chiral-induced spin selectivity.

Abstract:The fabrication of low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts is essential for water splitting to achieve a sustainable oxygen evolution reaction. In this work, spinel oxides (CuCo 2 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 ) are mounted on nickel foam (NF) to form chrysanthemum-like hybrid crystal structures assembled from nanowires. The as-synthesized CuCo 2 O 4 –Co 3 O 4 /NF shows a high surface area, a large number of mesoporous structures and excellent charge transfer channels, which is conducive to the generation and overflow of O 2 . And the synergistic effect, as well as the transfer of electron density between CuCo 2 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 , contributes to the enhancement of OER activity. As a result, CuCo 2 O 4 –Co 3 O 4 /NF exhibits excellent OER performance with an overpotential of only 267 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope (114.6 mV dec −1 ) and excellent stability with a scarce loss of the initial catalyst activity over 24 h under alkaline conditions. This work provides an effective method to show higher catalytic activity by combining two spinel oxides.

Abstract:Abstract Continual progress in technologies that rely on water splitting are often hampered by the slow kinetics associated with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we show that the efficiency of top-performing catalysts can be improved, beyond typical thermodynamic considerations, through control over reaction intermediate spin alignment during electrolysis. Spin alignment is achieved using the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect and the improvement in OER manifests as an increase in Faradaic efficiency, decrease in reaction overpotential, and change in the rate determining step for chiral nanocatalysts over compositionally analogous achiral nanocatalysts. These studies illustrate that a defined spatial orientation of the nanocatalysts is not necessary to exhibit spin selectivity and therefore represent a viable platform for employing the transformative role of chirality in other reaction pathways and processes.

Abstract:It has been extensively researched that oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions involves dynamic surface restructuring. In particular, the development and design of sulfide/oxide pre-catalyst can reasonably adjust the composition and structure after surface reconstruction, which is very important for oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, a simple two-step hydrothermal method was used to achieve in situ S leaching and doping by precipitation-dissolution equilibrium, inducing the composition change and structure reconstruction of CoFe oxides. In addition, the cross-linked nanosheet structure generated in situ widely exposes the active area, and the crystal/amorphous interface accelerates the charge and mass transfer efficiency. The structurally transformed FeOOH and CoOOH showed excellent OER activity, with overpotentials of 299 and 322.2 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 , significantly superior to one-step or uncured catalysts. Low-cost iron based materials combined with simple methods can be easily mass-produced. This provides an opportunity for the effective design of heterogeneous surface reconfigurable electrocatalysts for practical water electrolysis.

Abstract:In water splitting processes, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the main kinetic control steps that should be triggered by high-efficiency catalysts. A series of Cu-based catalysts are considered potential candidates. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for fabricating large-scale copper-based catalysts by anodization on a copper foil at room temperature in a KOH solution. The representative petal-shaped CuO and Cu(OH)2 nanorods are obtained. The corresponding surface areas are 0.0197 and 1.966 m2/g, respectively. The surface wettability of Cu(OH)2 is lower than that of CuO. The catalytic performance is studied by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The results show that the potential of the OER for CuO at 10 mA/cm2 is 1.67 V, which reduces by 130 mV compared to Cu(OH)2. The CuO could keep 10 mA/cm2 after a 1 h chronoamperometry test, which is about 3 times higher than that of Cu(OH)2. To verify the distinguishing catalytic difference between CuO and Cu(OH)2, in situ Raman spectra have been recorded. Inspiringly, the CuIII active specie at 603 cm–1 is captured during the OER process on CuO instead of Cu(OH)2. The related mechanism has been discussed in detail.

Herein, we constructed ZnO-Cu2S nanoflower arrays on copper foam (CF) substrate with porous structure and high conductivity for accelerated mass transfer and electron transfer. The ZnO-Cu2S heterostructure can generate a simple electron transport pathway, optimize the water adsorption energy, and thus improve the electrochemical performance. Meanwhile, superhydrophilic and aerophobic of ZnO-Cu2S/CF is conducive to the immersion of electrolyte, and the bubbles can be quickly detached from the electrode surface. As a result, the current density of ZnO-Cu2S/CF is 20 mA & BULL;cm-2, the potential is only 1.359 V, and it is stable for 24 h. The improvement of OER performance of electrocatalyst is mainly due to the increase of active sites, the acceleration of electron transfer between electrode and electrolyte, and the synergistic effect between ZnO and Cu2S. A Nanosized CoNi Hydroxide@Hydroxysulfide Core-Shell Heterostructure for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution.

Abstract:A cost-effective and highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst will be significant for the future energy scenario. The emergence of the core-shell heterostructure has invoked new feasibilities to inspire the full potential of non-precious-metal candidates. The shells always have a large thickness, affording robust mechanical properties under harsh reaction conditions, which limits the full exposure of active sites with highly intrinsic reactivity and extrinsic physicochemical characters for optimal performance. Herein, a nanosized CoNi hydroxide@hydroxysulfide core-shell heterostructure is fabricated via an ethanol-modified surface sulfurization method. Such a synthetic strategy is demonstrated to be effective in controllably fabricating a core-shell heterostructure with an ultrathin shell (4 nm) and favorable exposure of active sites, resulting in a moderately regulated electronic structure, remarkably facilitated charge transfer, fully exposed active sites, and a strongly coupled heterointerface for energy electrocatalysis. Consequently, the as-obtained hydroxide@hydroxysulfide core-shell is revealed as a superior OER catalyst, with a small overpotential of 274.0 mV required for 10.0 mA cm(-2), a low Tafel slope of 45.0 mV dec(-1), and a favorable long-term stability in 0.10 M KOH. This work affords fresh concepts and strategies for the design and fabrication of advanced core-shell heterostructures, and thus opens up new avenues for the targeted development of high-performance energy materials.

Engineering spin-dependent catalysts: chiral covalent organic frameworks with tunable electroactivity for electrochemical oxygen evolution

Abstract:The chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect offers promising prospects for spintronics, yet designing chiral materials that enable efficient spin-polarized electron transport remains challenging. Here, we report the utility of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in manipulating electron spin for spin-dependent catalysis via CISS. This enables us to design and synthesize three three-dimensional chiral COFs (CCOFs) with tunable electroactivity and spin-electron conductivity through imine condensations of enantiopure 1,1'-binaphthol-derived tetraaldehyde and tetraamines derived from 1,4-benzenediamine, pyrene, or tetrathiafulvalene skeletons. The CISS effect of CCOFs is verified by magnetic conductive atomic force microscopy. Compared with their achiral analogs, these CCOFs serve as efficient spin filters, reducing the overpotential of oxygen evolution and improving the Tafel slope. Particularly, the diarylamine-based CCOF showed a low overpotential of 430 mV (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) at 10 mA cm-2 with long-term stability comparable to the commercial RuO2. This enhanced spin-dependent OER activity stems from its excellent redox-activity, good electron conductivity and effective suppression effect on the formation of H2O2 byproducts.

Abstract:Rational designing and synthesizing highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst plays a key role in energy conversion. However, due to the numerous factors affecting the activity of electrocatalysis, the understanding of their catalytic mechanism is insufficient, and challenges still exist. Herein, the organic group of the metal-organic nanosheets electrocatalyst was replaced by NH2 to CH3 to controllable regulate the catalytic performance of OER, corresponding to the overpotential of OER reducing from 385 mV to 318 mV at 10 mA cm−2, superior to the commercial precious metal based catalyst RuO2. Furthermore, combining the density functional theory (DFT) and electron localization function (ELF) indicates that the type of ligands group can indirectly modulate the electronic structure of metal catalytic center and the degree of electronic localization of the metal-organic nanosheets catalysts, resulting in the change in electrocatalytic activity. This simple catalytic model is more favorable to investigate the catalytic mechanism, providing a new strategy for the development of efficient electrocatalyst.

Electronic coupling strategy to boost water oxidation efficiency based on the modelling of trimetallic hydroxides Ni1-x-yFexCry (OH)2: From theory to experiment

Abstract:Developing low-cost yet highly efficient earth-abundant electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance for industrial scale water splitting for clean hydrogen production, as well as for rechargeable metal-air batteries. In searching for advanced catalysts, it is equally important to fundamentally understand working mechanism and be able to rationally design and manipulate catalytic sites. Starting from the density functional theory (DFT) calculations as a guidance, our theoretical model revealed that chromium substitution in nickel-iron hydroxides (Ni1-xFex(OH)(2)) not only accelerated the charge transfer but also regulated the adsorption energy of OER intermediates to achieve optimal binding strength. Experimentally, chromium was doped into the laminate of Ni1-xFex(OH)(2), resulting in the enhanced catalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction, which confirmed the predictions from the theoretical data. The porous and ultra-thin ternary Ni1-x-yFexCry(OH)(2) electrocatalysts were grown directly on a nickel foam (NF) substrate, with an optimum composition Ni0.66Fe0.27Cr0.07(OH)(2)/NF identified, which exhibited a superior OER performance, i.e., achieving a significant current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low overpotential of 231 mV, a small Tafel slope (31 mV dec(-1)) and an excellent stability at a highly oxidative potential of 1.68 V vs RHE in alkaline electrolyte. The comprehensive study involving both theoretical and experimental results in this work provides an insightful guidance in designing efficient OER catalysts for chemical and electrical energy conversion and storage.
Nano-assembly Hierarchical Fe–Ni–Se/Cu(OH)2 with Induced Interface Engineering As Highly Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Developing novel electrocatalysts with both high efficiency and low cost are highly imperative for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, the hierarchical Fe-Ni-Se/Cu(OH)(2)/CF with core-shell structural nanorod arrays were fabricated via the facile electrodeposition treatment after the self-supported anodization of copper foam (CF). The as-prepared catalytic electrode presents prominent OER performance with the low overpotential of 272 mV at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 and behaves the impressive durability for almost 58 h, outperforming most of the previously reported electrocatalysts. The obtained excellent activity could be ascribed to the unique hierarchical structure composed of the Fe-Ni-Se shell with superb conductivity and the Cu(OH)(2) nanorods core, which could establish the synergistic effect in the interface engineering and further increase electron transfer rate. Moreover, it is identified that the catalyst experienced the reconstruction of phases and microstructure during the OER operation. The produced oxygen vacancies and fluffy ultrathin nanosheets are beneficial to the reduction of reaction kinetics as well as the expose of active sites. Our study may pave the way to design noble-metal-free catalyst with rational structure and remarkable activity for water splitting in the future.
Engineering Co/Co2P Mott-Schottky heterostructure encased in hollow N-doped carbon polyhedron as an advanced nanoreactor towards high-efficiency electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Abstract:Rational exploration of earth-abundant, highly active and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through the compositional manipulation and nano-architectural design is of great significance for the development of renewable energy technologies. Herein, an advanced nanoreactor composed of Co/Co2P heterostructured nanoparticles in-situ confined in N-doped carbon hollow rhombic dodecahedrons (referred as Co/Co2P@N-CHRDs hereafter) was elaborately designed as a high-efficiency OER electrocatalyst through a feasible self-sacrificial templated method. The construction of Co/Co2P metal/semiconductor Mott-Schottky heterojunctions could effectively trigger the spontaneous charge redistribution at the heterointerfaces, which is beneficial to enhance the charge transfer rate, tailor the adsorption behaviors of the OER intermediates, and thus ultimately improve the intrinsic activity. Moreover, the intimate coupling Co/Co2P heteroparticles with the porous and hollow carbon matrix with abundant open interior voids allows to stabilize the active sites, enrich the accessibility of active species, and shorten mass diffusion pathways. Benefiting from the favorable compositional and morphological merits, the well-designed Co/Co2P@N-CHRDs exhibit distinguished OER performance in alkaline electrolyte, requiring an overpotential of 267 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and demonstrating superb long-term durability. More impressively, the Pt/C+Co/Co2P@N-CHRDs-equipped Zn-air battery delivers a lower charge polarization curve and remarkable prolonged stability over 593 cycles as compared with the commercial Pt/C+RuO2-based counterpart, holding the promising practicability in real-life energy conversion devices. The simultaneous implementation of Mott-Schottky effect, nano-hollowing design, and carbon hybridization may inspire the future design of affordable and practicable electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in electrochemical water splitting, leading to a more feasible route for sustainably and eco-friendly producing hydrogen energy. Rather than noble metal catalysts with scarcity and expense, first raw 3d dual transition metal non-oxides are promising candidates to achieve superior OER activity and durability in alkaline solution due to their tunable electron structure, high conductivity, and cost-off advantages. Herein, a concise review of recent advances in designing 3d dual transition metal non-oxides electrocatalysts for OER under alkaline condition is provided with particular emphasis on structure-performance relationships. The diverse effects of 3d dual transition metals, especially for Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, are highlighted in discussion regarding synthesis strategies and OER performances of corresponding electrocatalysts, in different categories of transition metal sulfides, selenides, phosphides, nitrides, and other non-oxides. Finally, existent challenges and directional perspectives for developing first raw 3d dual transition metal non-oxides electrocatalysts with outstanding OER performance are outlined.

Abstract:The constructure of a heterostructured interface is an effective way to design highly durable and efficient water oxidation electrocatalysts. Herein, Cu/CuCN with heterointerfaces is the first synthesized case through a simple epitaxial-like growth method, displaying superior activity and stability under pH-universal media. Associated with high electron transport and transfer of the epitaxial interfacial area, the Cu/CuCN pre-catalyst is applied to deliver the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with lower overpotentials of 250 mV (forward scan) and 380 mV (backward scan) at 10 mA cm(-2) and demonstrates better intrinsic activity (jECSA of 1.0 mA cm(-2) at 420 mV) and impressive stability (136 h) in 1.0 M KOH, which exceeds most previous catalysts. Even using a nominal voltage of 1.5 V of a AA battery can drive the overall water-splitting setup. Experiments combined with theoretical simulations further uncover the existence of CuO species at the heterointerface during basic OER, which is evidence of better OER performance with abundant active sites that accelerate the conversion kinetics.
Improved Interface Charge Transfer and Redistribution in CuO‐CoOOH p‐n Heterojunction Nanoarray Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Electron density modulation is of great importance in an attempt to achieve highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, the successful construction of CuO@CoOOH p-n heterojunction (i.e., p-type CuO and n-type CoOOH) nanoarray electrocatalyst through an in situ anodic oxidation of CuO@CoSx on copper foam is reported. The p-n heterojunction can remarkably modify the electronic properties of the space-charge region and facilitate the electron transfer. Moreover, in situ Raman study reveals the generation of SO42− from CoSx oxidation, and electron cloud density distribution and density functional theory calculation suggest that surface-adsorbed SO42− can facilitate the OER process by enhancing the adsorption of OH−. The positively charged CoOOH in the space-charge region can significantly enhance the OER activity. As a result, the CuO@CoOOH p-n heterojunction shows significantly enhanced OER performance with a low overpotential of 186 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The successful preparation of a large scale (14 × 25 cm2) sample demonstrates the possibility of promoting the catalyst to industrial-scale production. This study offers new insights into the design and fabrication of non-noble metal-based p-n heterojunction electrocatalysts as effective catalytic materials for energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:The electrolysis of water is an efficient and environmentally friendly technology for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves a multi-electron–proton coupling transfer step that limits the efficiency of water splitting. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop electrocatalysts with expected activity and stability to accelerate the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction. In this paper, hierarchically porous Cu(OH)2@(Fe, Co, Ni)MOF/CF nanosheet (denoted as Cu(OH)2@FCN MOF/CF) arrays were successfully prepared by the hydrothermally induced in situ growth of FCN MOF nanosheets using modified Cu(OH)2 nanowires as carriers; herein, the tuned active species of metal ligands in the FCN MOF composition structure are used as the main catalytic reaction size in the OER. The synergistic effect of a unique porous structure and the active metal-ligand species in the MOF render the catalyst a large electrochemically active surface area and more active species. Then, the active material is fully contacted with the electrolyte to expose more electrochemically active sites, thus greatly improving the electrocatalytic activity and durability of the OER. Specifically, the Cu(OH)2@FCN MOF/CF delivers a minimum overpotential of 290 mV and low Tafel slope of 96.15 mV·dec−1 at 10 mA·cm−2 as well as ultra-long cycling stability. The resulted OER performance is superior to most reported MOF-based electrocatalysts. This novel structural design not only provides a new strategy for the facile preparation of low-cost and high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts but also paves an avenue for the development of other MOF-based composite electrocatalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performances.

Abstract:Hollow CuCo2S4 nanorods (H-CCS-Ns) have been successfully developed via a facile successive anion/cation-exchange method. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance of H-CCS-Ns is mainly attributed to its distinctive hollow structure, which accelerates the electron transfer rate and provides abundant active sites. Moreover, a mechanism study indicates that H-CCS-Ns has highly active octahedral Co3+, and the existence of Co3+ cations optimizes the adsorption of oxygen-involved intermediates, making H-CCS-Ns a promising OER electrocatalyst. Optimized H-CCS-Ns only need an ultralow overpotential of 220 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 and exhibit distinguished cycling stability with a negligible fluctuation for 30 h. More impressively, when H-CCS-Ns are assembled with Pt/C for overall water splitting, a voltage as low as 1.545 V is required at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2, and the catalyst shows outstanding stability for as long as 38 h. This study offers a feasible strategy to design hollow spinel catalysts for efficient OER catalysis.
