Abstract:Atmospheric CO(2) enrichment generally stimulates plant photosynthesis and nutrient uptake, modifying the local and global cycling of bioactive elements. Although nutrient cations affect the long-term productivity and carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems, little is known about the effect of CO(2) enrichment on cation availability in soil. In this study, we present evidence for a novel mechanism of CO(2)-enhancement of cation release from soil in rice agricultural systems. Elevated CO(2) increased organic C allocation belowground and net H(+) excretion from roots, and stimulated root and microbial respiration, reducing soil redox potential and increasing Fe(2+) and Mn(2+) in soil solutions. Increased H(+), Fe(2+), and Mn(2+) promoted Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) release from soil cation exchange sites. These results indicate that over the short term, elevated CO(2) may stimulate cation release from soil and enhance plant growth. Over the long-term, however, CO(2)-induced cation release may facilitate cation losses and soil acidification, negatively feeding back to the productivity of terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract:In this paper, four hypotheses to explain the N concentration decrease in plants exposed to elevated pCO2 were tested by growing rice (Oryza sativa L.) in nutrient solution under two atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations (ambient and ambient+200μmolmol−1) and two N levels (14 and 28mgNL−1). Results showed that: (1) ‘dilution’ of N by enhanced biomass occurred in all tissues but leaves. (2) Elevated pCO2 favored N allocation to ears over to stems and leaves, however, altered N partition between the shoot and the root was not observed. (3) The decline in transpiration rate should not be the key factor that led to the reduction in plant tissue N concentration under elevated pCO2. (4) Significantly increased total plant N uptake under elevated pCO2 did not led to a significant increase of N yield due to increased plant N loss (defined as the difference between total N uptake and N yield). Elevated pCO2 also decreased root N uptake efficiency (NRE). Increased plant N loss and decreased NRE at elevated pCO2 may play major roles in N concentration decrease in tissues of rice.
Effects of Free-air CO_2 Enrichment on Root Characteristics and C:N Ratio of Rice at the Heading Stage

Abstract:A hydroponics experiment was conducted to investigate the rice root growth in FACE (free-air carbon dioxide enrichment). The root biomass, root volume, ratio of root/shoot, number of adventitious roots and root diameter significantly increased under FACE conditions, while the CO2 enrichment decreased the N concentration in rice roots without any change in the C content, leading to an increase in root C:N ratio. Moreover, the elevated CO2 resulted in a remarkable decrease of root activity, expressed as per unit root dry weight, which might be responsible for decreased N concentration in roots.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) nutrition is always a key issue regarding plants responses to elevated CO2. Yet it is unclear of how elevated CO2 affects P uptake under different nitrogen (N) forms. This study investigated the influence of elevated CO2 (800 l l(1)) on P uptake and utilization by Arabidopsis grown in pH-buffered phosphate (P)-deficient (0.5 M) hydroponic culture supplying with 2mM nitrate (NO3) or ammonium (NH4+). After 7 d treatment, elevated CO2 enhanced the biomass production of both NO3- and NH4+-fed plants but decreased the P amount absorbed per weight of roots and the P concentration in the shoots of plants supplied with NH4+. In comparison, elevated CO2 increased the amount of P absorbed per weight of roots, as well as the P concentration in plants and alleviated P deficiency-induced symptoms of plants supplied with NO3. Elevated CO2 also increased the root/shoot ratio, total root surface area, and acid phosphatase activity, and enhanced the expression of genes or transcriptional factors involving in P uptake, allocation and remobilization in P deficient plants. Furthermore, elevated CO2 increased the nitric oxide (NO) level in roots of NO3-fed plants but decreased it in NH4+-fed plants. NO scavenger 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO) inhibited plant P acquisition by roots under elevated CO2. Considering all of these findings, this study concluded that a combination of elevated CO2 and NO3 nutrition can induce a set of plant adaptive strategies to improve P status from P-deficient soluble sources and that NO may be a signalling molecule that controls these processes.
Impacts of elevated CO2 on plant resistance to nutrient deficiency and toxic ions via root exudates: A review

Abstract:Elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO(2)) concentration can increase root exudation into soils, which improves plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. This review used a meta-analysis to assess effect sizes of eCO(2) on both efflux rates and total amounts of some specific root exudates, and dissected whether eCO(2) enhances plant's resistance to nutrient deficiency and ion toxicity via root exudates. Elevated CO2 did not affect efflux rates of total dissolved organic carbon, a measure of combined root exudates per unit of root biomass or length, but increased the efflux amount of root systems per plant by 31% which is likely attributed to increased root biomass (29%). Elevated CO2 increased efflux rates of soluble-sugars, carboxylates, and citrate by 47%, 111%, and 16%, respectively, but did not affect those of amino acids and malate. The increased carbon allocation to roots, increased plant requirements of mineral nutrients, and heightened detoxification responses to toxic ions under eCO(2) collectively contribute to the increased efflux rates despite lacking molecular evidence. The increased efflux rates of root exudates under eCO(2) were closely associated with improved nutrient uptake whilst less studies have validated the associations between root exudates and resistance to toxic ions of plants when grown under eCO(2). Future studies are required to reveal how climate change (eCO(2)) affect the efflux of specific root exudates, particularly organic anions, the corresponding nutrient uptake and toxic ion resistance from plant molecular biology and soil microbial ecology perspectives. Assimilation of exogenous cyanide cross talk in Oryza sativa L. to the key nodes in nitrogen metabolism

Abstract:Exogenous cyanide (CN-) effects on nitrogen (N) uptake, transport, and assimilation in rice seedlings were investigated at the biochemical and molecular levels. Seedlings were treated with either a 2-d or 4-d supply of potassium cyanide (KCN) in the nutrient solution containing nitrate (NO3-) or ammonium (NH4+). Although a KCN-induced increase was recorded in the activity of β-cyanoalanine synthase (β-CAS) in rice tissues of both NH4+-fed and NO3--fed seedlings, the former showed a significantly greater assimilation rate for CN- than the latter. The addition of KCN decreased NO3- uptake and assimilation, whereas a negligible impact was observed in NH4+ treatments. Enzymatic assays showed a marked activities enhancement of glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) in NH4+-fed seedlings after KCN exposure. Similarly, the rises occurring in nitrate reductase (NR) and GDH activity in NO3--fed seedlings were also detected after 2-d exposure to KCN, whereas a significant reduction of GS and GOGAT activities was determined. The results suggest that although exogenous KCN at moderate or high concentrations caused repressively effects on biomass growth of both NH4+-fed and NO3--fed rice seedlings, the nontoxic concentration of KCN supplied can serve as a supplemental N source in plant nutrition and N metabolism.
Interaction Between C-4 Barnyard Grass and C-3 Upland Rice under Elevated Co2: Impact of Mycorrhizae

Abstract:Atmospheric CO2 enrichment may impact arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) development and function, which could have subsequent effects on host plant species interactions by differentially affecting plant nutrient acquisition. However, direct evidence illustrating this scenario is limited. We examined how elevated CO2 affects plant growth and whether mycorrhizae mediate interactions between C-4 barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv.) and C-3 upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in a low nutrient soil. The monocultures and combinations with or without mycorrhizal inoculation were grown at ambient (400 +/- 20 mu mol mol (1)) and elevated CO2 (700 +/- 20 mu mol mol (1)) levels. The N-15 isotope tracer was introduced to quantify the mycorrhizally mediated N acquisition of plants. Elevated CO2 stimulated the growth of C-3 upland rice but not that Of C-4 barnyard grass under monoculture. Elevated CO2 also increased mycorrhizal colonization Of C-4 barnyard grass but did not affect mycorrhizal colonization Of C-3 upland rice. Mycorrhizal inoculation increased the shoot biomass ratio of C-4 barnyard grass to C-3 upland rice under both CO2 concentrations but had a greater impact under the elevated than ambient CO2, level. Mycorrhizae decreased relative interaction index (RII) of C-3 plants under both ambient and elevated CO2, but mycorrhizae increased RII Of C-4 plants only under elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 and mycorrhizal inoculation enhanced N-15 and total N and P Uptake Of C-4 barnyard grass in mixture but had no effects on N and P acquisition of C-3 upland rice, thus altering the distribution of N and P between the species in mixture. These results implied that CO2 stimulation of mycorrhizae and their nutrient acquisition may impact competitive interaction Of C-4 barnyard grass and C-3 upland rice under future CO2, scenarios. Abstract:Increasing CO2 levels are speculated to change the effects of engineered nanomaterials in soil and on plant growth. How plants will respond to a combination of elevated CO2 and nanomaterials stress has rarely been investigated, and the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. Here, we conducted a field experiment to investigate the rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. IIyou) response to TiO2 nanoparticles (nano-TiO2, 0 and 200 mg kg-1) using a free-air CO2 enrichment system with different CO2 levels (ambient ∼370 μmol mol-1 and elevated ∼570 μmol mol-1). The results showed that elevated CO2 or nano-TiO2 alone did not significantly affect rice chlorophyll content and antioxidant enzyme activities. However, in the presence of nano-TiO2, elevated CO2 significantly enhanced the rice height, shoot biomass, and panicle biomass (by 9.4%, 12.8%, and 15.8%, respectively). Furthermore, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis revealed that genes involved in photosynthesis were up-regulated while most genes associated with secondary metabolite biosynthesis were down-regulated in combination-treated rice. This indicated that elevated CO2 and nano-TiO2 might stimulate rice growth by adjusting resource allocation between photosynthesis and metabolism. This study provides novel insights into rice responses to increasing contamination under climate change.
Elevated CO2 Exacerbates Effects of TiO2 Nanoparticles on Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Leaf Transcriptome and Soil Bacteria

Abstract:Elevated CO2 affects the plant rhizosphere and can therefore affect the fate and toxicity of soil contaminants. However, little is known about how the effects of nanoparticles on plants and soil bacteria will change under future CO2 levels. A free-air CO2 enrichment system with two CO2 levels (ambient, 390 μmol mol-1; elevated, 590 μmol mol-1) was used to investigate the responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and soil bacteria to titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2, 0 and 200 mg kg-1). Results showed that nano-TiO2 alone did not significantly affect rice growth but affected soil bacteria involved in the carbon and sulfur cycles. Elevated CO2 alone increased rice plant biomass and up-regulated genes related to ribosomes, but its combination with nano-TiO2 down-regulated genes related to photosynthesis and photosynthetic antennae. Elevated CO2 also exacerbated the disturbance by nano-TiO2 to soil bacteria involved in carbon and nitrogen cycles, and consequently inhibited the rice growth. These findings provide a reference for the comprehensive evaluation for the risk of soil pollution.
Response of rice growth and leaf physiology to elevated CO2 concentrations: A meta-analysis of 20-year FACE studies

Abstract:The Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facility enables the study of plant responses to climate change under open field conditions. This meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively assess the effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on 47 variables describing rice growth physiology and whether CO2 effects were influenced by cultivar, plant growth stage, nitrogen application rate or temperature. On average, elevated [CO2] increased root and shoot biomass by 28% and 19%, respectively. Among shoot organs, the [CO2]-induced increase in leaf biomass was only 9%, significantly smaller than a 24% increase in stems or a 25% increase in panicles. The higher biomass for FACE rice was consistent with the stimulation in plant height (4%), maximum tiller number (11%), leaf area index (9%) and light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Asat, 22%). When compared within rice groups, hybrid rice showed the greatest CO2 response in growth and leaf physiological variables. Elevated [CO2] increased plant biomass and Asat at each rice growth stage, but the increment tended to decline with the advancement of rice growth and development. The increase in aboveground biomass at elevated [CO2] was enhanced by a higher nitrogen supply but reduced with a temperature elevation of 1-2 °C. Rice growth benefited more from elevated [CO2] in Chinese FACE studies than in Japanese FACE studies, which may result from the different cultivars and nitrogen application rates used in the two countries. Combined with a previous meta-analysis of the rice yield response to FACE, the [CO2] level predicted in the middle of this century will improve rice productivity by stimulating leaf photosynthesis. However, the effects of CO2 on the photosynthetic rate and rice growth tend to shrink over the plant life cycle. Selecting heat-resistant, high-yield hybrid rice cultivars with large sink capacity, supplemented with appropriate nitrogen input, will maximize the CO2 fertilizer effect in the future.

Abstract:Over time, the relative effects of elevated [CO(2)] on the aboveground photosynthesis, growth and development of rice (Oryza sativa L.) are likely to be changed with increasing duration of CO(2) exposure, but the resultant effects on rice belowground responses remain to be evaluated. To investigate the impacts of elevated [CO(2)] on seasonal changes in root growth, morphology and physiology of rice, a free-air CO(2) enrichment (FACE) experiment was performed at Wuxi, Jiangsu, China, in 2002-2003. A japonica cultivar with large panicle was exposed to two [CO(2)] (ambient [CO(2)], 370 mu mol mol(-1); elevated [CO(2)], 570 mu mol mol(-1)) at three levels of nitrogen (N): low (LN, 15 g N m(-2)), medium (MN, 25 g N m(-2)) and high N (HN, 35 g N m(-2)). Elevated [CO(2)] increased cumulative root volume, root dry weight, adventitious root length and adventitious root number at all developmental stages by 25-71%, which was mainly associated with increased root growth rate during early growth period (EGP) and lower rate of root senescence during late growth period (LGP), while a slight inhibition of root growth rate occurred during middle growth period (MGP). For individual adventitious roots, elevated [CO(2)] increased average length, volume, diameter and dry weight early in the season, but the effects gradually disappeared in subsequent stages. Total surface area and active adsorption area per unit root dry weight reached their maxima 10 days earlier in FACE vs. ambient plants, but both of them together with root oxidation ability per unit root dry weight declined with elevated [CO(2)] during MGP and LGP, the decline being larger during MGP than LGP. The CO(2)-induced decreases in specific root activities during MGP and LGP were associated with a larger amount of root accumulation during EGP and lower N concentration and higher C/N ratio in roots during MGP and LGP in FACE vs. ambient plants. The results suggest that most of the CO(2)-induced increases in shoot growth of rice are similarly associated with increased root growth.

Abstract:Inputs of nitrogen into terrestrial ecosystems, mainly via the use of ammonium-based fertilizers in agroecosystems, are enormous, but the fate of this nitrogen under elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is not well understood. We have taken advantage of a 15-year free-air CO2 enrichment study to investigate the influence of elevated CO2 on the transformation of ammonium-nitrogen in a rice ecosystem in which ammonium is usually assumed to be stable under anaerobic conditions. We demonstrate that elevated CO2 causes substantial losses of ammonium-nitrogen that result from anaerobic oxidation of ammonium coupled to reduction of iron. We identify a new autotrophic member of the bacterial order Burkholderiales that may use soil CO2 as a carbon source to couple anaerobic ammonium oxidation and iron reduction. These findings offer insight into the coupled cycles of nitrogen and iron in terrestrial ecosystems and raise questions about the loss of ammonium-nitrogen from arable soils under future climate-change scenarios.

Abstract:The rising atmospheric CO 2 is a major driver for climate change, directly affects rice production. Cadmium (Cd) in paddy soils also serves as a persistent concern. Currently, few studies consider the rice response to coupled stresses of elevated CO 2 (eCO 2 ) and soil Cd. Experimental evidence understanding the effects and mechanisms of eCO 2 on Cd uptake by rice is lacking yet. In a free-air CO 2 enrichment (FACE) system, a 3-year pot experiment was conducted to explore the Cd uptake by rice under two CO 2 conditions (ambient and ambient + 200 μmol·mol −1 ) using combinations of in-situ Cd-contaminated soils and associated rice varieties. Results showed that more low-crystalline Fe oxides (Feh) in iron plaque (IP) were deposited on root surface with the increased dissolved Fe 2+ due to lower soil redox status under eCO 2 . The Cd accumulation in rice was hindered due to more Cd associated with Feh (Feh-Cd) rather than uptake by roots. Taken together, the relative effects of eCO 2 on Cd uptake by rice were consistent across years under different Cd-contaminated soils. Our findings will help to better understand the Cd uptake by rice under future climate conditions, and thus push the development of climate-crop-soil models and accurate prediction for food security.

Abstract:Cyanide (CN − ) assimilation in plants takes place by β-cyanoalanine synthase (β-CAS) and sulfurtransferase (ST), in which the ST pathway converts CN − into thiocyanate (SCN − ). Both chemicals (CN − and SCN − ) are frequently detected in the effluent of gold mining operations. In this connection, exogenous SCN − was applied to rice plants with CN − and compared with CN − alone to investigate its effects on CN − assimilation and degradation pathways. Interestingly, the CN − and SCN − content in both roots and shoots were increased with the increase in "CN − " treatments, but surprisingly their content under "SCN − +CN − " treatments did not show the similar trend. The increasing trend remained the same for CN − but the SCN − content was constant with increasing CN − concentrations in comparison with the control (SCN − alone). Additionally, the assimilation rates of CN − in rice plants under "SCN − +CN − " treatments were significantly higher than "CN − " treatments. The application of SCN − with CN − mostly alters the expression of both β-CAS and ST-associated genes. On one side, the application of SCN − significantly repressed the expression of genes encoded with ST in rice plants, but on the other side, it significantly up-regulated the expression of the β-CAS gene located in mitochondria. These results reveal that the application of exogenous SCN − increases CN − assimilation rates by inhibiting the ST pathway and stimulating the β-CAS pathway. This study would provide new insight into the positive effects of exogenous SCN − in increasing CN − assimilation by altering the degradation pathways in rice plants.

Abstract:Hydroponic experiments were carried out to study the mechanisms of CO2 enrichment-induced decrease of nitrate accumulation in two genotypes of Chinese cabbage(low nitrate accumulation genotype Dongfei and high nitrate accumulation genotype Gaoxiongtiancui).Results showed that elevated CO2 not only significantly increased the biomass and nitrate reductase(NR) activity,but also significantly decreased the nitrate concentration in leaves,stems and roots of both genotypes.In addition,nitrate uptake by plants was also enhanced by elevated CO2,and the elevated CO2-increased percentage of nitrate uptake was higher than that of biomass,indicating that not only the dilution effect resulted by biomass increase,but also the change of physiological processes are the reasons leading to the decrease of nitrate accumulation in plants under elevated CO2.Moreover,the decreased percentage of nitrate concentration was correlated well with the increased percentage of NR activities in Dongfei genotype,while in Gaoxiongtiancui genotype the decreased percentage of nitrate concentration was greatly correlative to the increased percentage of biomass.These results demonstrate that the increases of both NR activity and biomass are the pivotally mechanisms reducing nitrate accumulation in vegetable under CO2 enrichment,whereas distinct genotypic differences exist in the contribution rates of these two mechanisms.
Inhibition of Autotrophic Nitrifiers in a Nitrogen-Rich Paddy Soil by Elevated CO2

Abstract:Autotrophic nitrifiers, by catalysing the oxidation of ammonia to nitrate, play a vital role in the global nitrogen cycle. They convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into biomass and, therefore, are expected to respond positively to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations. However, in a long-term free-air CO2 enrichment experiment, we demonstrated that elevated atmospheric CO2 inhibited the growth of autotrophic nitrifiers, resulting in a reduction in nitrification in a rice ecosystem. By coupling stable-isotope probing with metagenomics, we found that the CO2 inhibition of nitrifiers was mainly a consequence of CO2-induced functional loss (genomes not recovered from metagenomes) of dominant but previously uncharacterized autotrophic nitrifying species. These species belonged mainly to ammonia-oxidizing archaea and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and comprised 63% of total dominant members identified from the active nitrifying communities. We further showed that the functional loss of these novel nitrifying species under elevated CO2 was due largely to the CO2-induced aggravation of anoxic stress in the paddy soil. Our results provide insight into the fate of inorganic nitrogen pools in global lowland soil and water systems under climate change. The growth and function of autotrophic nitrifiers are suppressed under elevated CO2 due to the intensification of anoxic stress, according to a long-term free-air CO2 enrichment experiment in nitrogen-rich paddy soil.

Abstract:The increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) concentrations can enhance plant growth and change their nutrient demands. We report that when tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum 'Zheza 809') plants were grown in iron (Fe)-limited medium (with hydrous ferric iron oxide) and elevated CO(2) (800 microL L(-1)), their biomass and root-to-shoot ratio were greater than plants grown in ambient CO(2) (350 microL L(-1)). Furthermore, the associated increase in Fe concentrations in the shoots and roots alleviated Fe-deficiency-induced chlorosis. Despite the improved nutrient status of plants grown in Fe-limited medium under elevated CO(2), the Fe-deficiency-induced responses in roots, including ferric chelate reductase activity, proton secretion, subapical root hair development, and the expression of FER, FRO1, and IRT genes, were all greater than plants grown in the ambient CO(2). The biomass of plants grown in Fe-sufficient medium was also increased by the elevated CO(2) treatment, but changes in tissue Fe concentrations and Fe deficiency responses were not observed. These results suggest that the improved Fe nutrition and induction of Fe-deficient-induced responses in plants grown in Fe-limited medium under elevated CO(2) are caused by interactions between elevated CO(2) and Fe deprivation. Elevated CO(2) also increased the nitric oxide (NO) levels in roots, but treatment with the NO scavenger cPTIO inhibited ferric chelate reductase activity and prevented the accumulation of LeFRO1, LeIRT1, and FER transcripts in roots of the Fe-limited plants. These results implicate some involvement of NO in enhancing Fe-deficiency-induced responses when Fe limitation and elevated CO(2) occur together. We propose that the combination of elevated CO(2) and Fe limitation induces morphological, physiological, and molecular responses that enhance the capacity for plants to access and utilize Fe from sparingly soluble sources, such as Fe(III)-oxide.
An Integrated Analysis of the Rice Transcriptome and Metabolome Reveals Differential Regulation of Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism in Response to Nitrogen Availability

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) is an extremely important macronutrient for plant growth and development. It is the main limiting factor in most agricultural production. However, it is well known that the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of rice gradually decreases with the increase of the nitrogen application rate. In order to clarify the underlying metabolic and molecular mechanisms of this phenomenon, we performed an integrated analysis of the rice transcriptome and metabolome. Both differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and metabolite Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis indicated that carbon and nitrogen metabolism is significantly affected by nitrogen availability. Further analysis of carbon and nitrogen metabolism changes in rice under different nitrogen availability showed that high N inhibits nitrogen assimilation and aromatic metabolism pathways by regulating carbon metabolism pathways such as the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). Under low nitrogen, the TCA cycle is promoted to produce more energy and α-ketoglutarate, thereby enhancing nitrogen transport and assimilation. PPP is also inhibited by low N, which may be consistent with the lower NADPH demand under low nitrogen. Additionally, we performed a co-expression network analysis of genes and metabolites related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism. In total, 15 genes were identified as hub genes. In summary, this study reveals the influence of nitrogen levels on the regulation mechanisms for carbon and nitrogen metabolism in rice and provides new insights into coordinating carbon and nitrogen metabolism and improving nitrogen use efficiency in rice.

Abstract:Understanding the reciprocal interaction between root development and coadapted beneficial microbes in response to elevated CO2 (eCO2) will facilitate the identification of nutrient‐efficient cultivars for sustainable agriculture. Here, systematic morphological, anatomical, chemical and gene expression assays performed under low‐nitrogen conditions revealed that eCO2 drove the development of the endodermal barrier with respect to L‐/S‐shaped lateral roots (LRs) in rice. Next, we applied metabolome and endodermal‐cell‐specific RNA sequencing and showed that rice adapts to eCO2 by spatially recruiting diazotrophs via flavonoid secretion in L‐shaped LRs. Using the rice Casparian strip mutant Oscasp1‐1, we confirmed that reduced lignin deposition selectively recruits the diazotrophic family of Oxalobacteraceae to confer tolerance to low nitrogen availability.

Abstract:Abstract The positive effects of high atmospheric CO2 concentrations [CO2] decrease over time in most C3 plants because of down-regulation of photosynthesis. A notable exception to this trend is plants hosting N-fixing bacteria. The decrease in photosynthetic capacity associated with an extended exposure to high [CO2] was therefore studied in non-nodulating rice that can establish endophytic interactions. Rice plants were inoculated with diazotrophic endophytes isolated from the Salicaceae and CO2 response curves of photosynthesis were determined in the absence or presence of endophytes at the panicle initiation stage. Non-inoculated plants grown under elevated [CO2] showed a down-regulation of photosynthesis compared to those grown under ambient [CO2]. In contrast, the endophyte-inoculated plants did not show a decrease in photosynthesis associated with high [CO2], and they exhibited higher photosynthetic electron transport and mesophyll conductance rates than non-inoculated plants under high [CO2]. The endophyte-dependent alleviation of decreases in photosynthesis under high [CO2] led to an increase in water-use efficiency. These effects were most pronounced when the N supply was limited. The results suggest that inoculation with N-fixing endophytes could be an effective means of improving plant growth under high [CO2] by alleviating N limitations.
