Abstract:Abstract Microbial community structure changes are key in detecting and characterizing the impacts of anthropogenic activities on aquatic ecosystems. Here, we evaluated the effect of river pollution of industrial and urban sites on the microbial community composition and distribution in the Nakivubo wetland and its catchment areas in Lake Victoria basin, Uganda. Samples were collected from two industrial and one urban polluted sites and the microbial diversity was analyzed based on a 16S rRNA gene clone library. Differences in microbial diversity and community structure were observed at different sampling points. Bacteria associated with bioremediation were found in sites receiving industrial waste, while a low proportion of important human-pathogenic bacteria were seen in urban polluted sites. While Escherichia spp. was the most dominant genus of bacteria for all sites, three unique bacteria, Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Thermomonas sp ., which have been reported to transform contaminants such as heavy metals and hydrocarbons (such as oils) by their metabolic pathways were also identified. Our results may serve as a basis for further studies assessing microbial community structure changes among polluted sites at Nakivubo Water Channel for management and monitoring. The diversity of natural microbial consortia could also be a rich bioprospecting resource for novel industrial enzymes, medicinal and bioactive compounds.
Assessing the quality of drinking water from selected water sources in Mbarara city, South-western Uganda

Abstract:This study assessed the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality with emphasis on risk score, source apportionment, geochemistry, feacal coliforms and water quality index of drinking water from selected water sources. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six villages in Mbarara city, south-western Uganda. Each selected source was inspected using a WHO-adopted sanitary inspection questionnaire. Each source’s risk score was calculated. Thirty-seven samples were taken from one borehole, nine open dug wells, four rain harvest tanks, and twenty-three taps. The values for apparent color and phosphate were higher than the permissible level as set by the World Health Organization and Ugandan standards (US EAS 12). The isolated organisms were Klebsiella spp . (8.11%), Citrobacter divergens (62.16%), Citrobacter fluendii (2.7%), E . coli (35.14%), Enterobacter aerogenes (8.11%), Enterobacter agglomerus (5.4%), Proteus spp . (2.7%), Enterobacter cloacae (13.5%), and Proteus mirabilis (2.7%). Twelve water sources (32.4%) had water that was unfit for human consumption that was unfit for human consumption (Grade E), Five sources (13.5%) had water that had a very poor index (Grade D), nine (24.3%) had water of poor index (Grade C), eight (21.6%) had water of good water index (Grade B), and only three (8.1%) had water of excellent water quality index (Grade A). The piper trilinear revealed that the dominant water type of the area were Mgso 4 and Caso 4 type. Gibbs plot represents precipitation dominance. PCA for source apportionment showed that well, tap and borehole water account for the highest variations in the quality of drinking water. These results suggest that drinking water from sources in Mbarara city is not suitable for direct human consumption without treatment. We recommend necessary improvements in water treatment, distribution, and maintenance of all the available water sources in Mbarara City, South Western Uganda.

High levels of faecal contamination in drinking groundwater and recreational water due to poor sanitation, in the sub-rural neighbourhoods of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Abstract:In many urban and peri-urban areas of developing countries, shallow wells and untreated water from urban rivers are used for domestic purposes, including drinking water supply, population bathing and irrigation for urban agriculture. The evaluation and monitoring of water quality are therefore necessary for preventing potential human risk associated with the exposure to contaminated water. In this study, physicochemical and bacteriological parameters were assessed in an urban river (named Kokolo Canal/Jerusalem River) draining the municipality of Lingwala (City of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo) and in two shallow wells used as drinking water supplies, during the wet and dry seasons in order to estimate the seasonal variation of contamination. The faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) isolated strains (Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Enterococcus (ENT)) from water and surface sediment, were characterized for human-specific bacteroides by molecular approach. The results revealed very high faecal contamination of water from the shallow wells, and of water and sediments from the river, during both wet and dry seasons. During the wet season, E. coli reached the values of 18.6 × 105 and 4.9 × 105 CFU 100 mL-1 in Kokolo Canal and shallow wells, respectively; and Enterococcus reached the values of 7.4 × 104 and 2.7 × 104 CFU 100 mL-1. Strong mutually positive correlation was observed between E. coli and ENT, with the range of R-value being 0.93 < r < 0.97 (p-value < 0.001, n = 15). The PCR assays for human-specific Bacteroides indicated that more than 98% of 500 isolated FIB strains were of human origin, pointing out the effect of poor household sanitation practices on surface water but also on groundwater contamination. The water samples from the shallow wells and Kokolo Canal were highly polluted with faecal matter in both seasons. However, the pollution level was significantly higher during the wet season compared to the dry season. Physicochemical analysis revealed also very high water electrical conductivity, with values much higher than the recommended limits of the World Health Organization guideline for drinking water. These results highlight the potential human health risk associated with the exposure to water contamination from shallow wells and Kokolo Canal, due to the very high level of human FIB. Rapid, unplanned and uncontrolled population growth in the city of Kinshasa is increasing considerably the water demand, whereas there is a dramatic lack of appropriate sanitation and wastewater facilities, as well as of faecal sludge (and solid waste) management and treatment. The lack of hygiene and the practice of open defecation is leading to the degradation of water quality, consequently the persistence of waterborne diseases in the neighbourhoods of sub-rural municipalities, and there is a growing threat to the sustainability to water resources and water quality. The results of this study should encourage municipality policy and strategy on increasing the access to safely managed sanitation services; in order to better protect surface water and groundwater sources, and limit the proliferation of epidemics touching regularly the city.
The influence of geology on the quality of groundwater for domestic use: a Kenyan review

Abstract:Kenya's population, akin to other Sub-Saharan countries, is rapidly growing. With the increasing unreliability of surface water, groundwater resources are becoming highly relied on for domestic and industrial use. Despite several known contaminants reported in different parts of the country, no study has attempted to correlate groundwater quality in the different geological provinces. This review critically synthesizes the influence of Kenya's diverse geology on groundwater quality for human consumption. This was achieved through a review of published journal articles and other research material through research and government databases. Groundwater was categorised based on the major geological provinces including the Archaean volcanic Nyanzian Craton, the Proterozoic metamorphic Mozambique Mobile Belt (MMB) and volcanic Kisii Group, the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sediments, and Tertiary volcanic Rift Valley. Groundwater quality in these regions showed a characteristic high concentration of fluoride (F − ) in volcanic aquifers of the Rift Valley and Nyazian Craton and metamorphic aquifers of the MMB, where mineral dissolution was the main process of F − release. High salinity was common in metamorphic aquifers in the MMB and the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary aquifers where mineral dissolution and seawater intrusion were the common contributors to salinity. Other contaminants such as lead and iron were reported in localised areas in the sedimentary and metamorphic aquifers, respectively. Anthropogenic contaminants such as Escherichia coli ( E. coli) , NO 3 − , and NO 2 − were common in shallow groundwater resources in most informal settlements in urban areas. Due to the presence of health implications, of the highlighted contaminants, such as fluorosis, high blood pressure and diarrhoea (due to high F − and salinity) in affected regions, this review highlights the need for an active water resource management program in any country relying on groundwater resources to determine the presence of all region-specific potentially harmful chemical elements and mitigation measures in all its water resources.

Abstract:Water is necessary for all biological life and industrial, municipal, agricultural, and residential processes. It is challenging to imagine living without water. Unfortunately, human and natural activities are causing the sources of useable water to become contaminated. Despite having enormous and unique natural water resources, Africa has experienced unprecedented environmental pollution because of the abuse of these resources. Additionally, population increase and urbanization brought by technological advancements have significantly worsened water pollution in Africa. The significant causes of pollution for surface waterways are untreated effluents released into the environment by humans and machines. It is still being determined if the emission goals set by several African countries for surface water discharge have been fulfilled. Wells and boreholes are essential sources of drinking water for Africans. However, because of their location in sterile areas, the natural water quality of these groundwater sources could be better. The primary sources of water pollution in Africa include agricultural activities, mining, roadside discharges, trash from companies and workshops, landfills, and e-waste. Oil leaks are a severe problem in oil-rich African countries. Lake Tanganyika is East Africa's most significant freshwater reservoir, while Lake Victoria is the second-deepest lake in the world.
A water quality dataset of levels of metal, nutrient and anions in sample water points from sixteen selected urban and rural districts of Uganda

Abstract:This dataset highlights some of the water quality issues in Uganda. The rationale for collecting the water samples was to test and ascertain the level and source of contamination. A total of one hundred and eighty five samples were collected from sixteen districts. At each water point, a sample was collected using a sterile plastic container, which was pre-rinsed with the water to be sampled. Water samples were drawn from protected and unprotected springs, shallow wells, taps, rain tanks, water reservoirs, open and hand dug wells and boreholes and immediately transported on ice to the National Water Quality Reference Laboratory for analysis. At the laboratory, a BWB flame photometer, Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) titration and gallery plus-thermos fisher discreet analyzer were used to analyze metal, nutrient and anion elements. On-site testing of dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity and turbidity was done using a water data sonde. This data can be used to draw comparative analyses of water quality issues in rural and urban districts and help in identifying the factors that influence water quality variations. The data can further be used for trend analysis and identifying long-term patterns whilst providing insights into pollution sources and the impact of environmental and climate change. Consequently, mathematical and machine learning models can use this data together with other parameters to predict the changes in water quality which information is essential for policy and decisions making. This data can be used by environmental scientists to draw insights into the health of the aquatic biodiversity; geospatial analysts to ascertain proximal water contaminants; public health specialists to analyze pathogens leading to water-borne diseases; water chemists to study the source and cause of water pollution; data scientists to perform predictive and descriptive analyses; and policy makers to formulate laws and regulations.

Abstract:Groundwater resources are important sources of drinking water in Africa, and they are hugely important in sustaining urban livelihoods and supporting a diverse range of commercial and agricultural activities. Groundwater has an important role in improving health in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). An estimated 250 million people (40% of the total) live in urban centres across SSA. SSA has experienced a rapid expansion in urban populations since the 1950s, with increased population densities as well as expanding geographical coverage. Estimates suggest that the urban population in SSA will double between 2000 and 2030. The quality status of shallow urban groundwater resources is often very poor due to inadequate waste management and source protection, and poses a significant health risk to users, while deeper borehole sources often provide an important source of good quality drinking water. Given the growth in future demand from this finite resource, as well as potential changes in future climate in this region, a detailed understanding of both water quantity and quality is required to use this resource sustainably. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of the water quality status, both microbial and chemical, of urban groundwater in SSA across a range of hydrogeological terrains and different groundwater point types. Lower storage basement terrains, which underlie a significant proportion of urban centres in SSA, are particularly vulnerable to contamination. The relationship between mean nitrate concentration and intrinsic aquifer pollution risk is assessed for urban centres across SSA. Current knowledge gaps are identified and future research needs highlighted.

Abstract:Groundwater and surface water quality is of great significance for humanity as they serve as the primary drinking water sources globally. Due to population growth and the need to provide people with necessities that depend on water as an essential resource, these bodies of water are becoming more polluted. The present study involved the collection of groundwater and surface water samples from Kampala and Mbarara districts in Uganda during the dry and wet seasons. Also, concentrations of lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) were analyzed in order to evaluate the toxicity of metals, identify potential sources, and determine the health risk associated with their presence in water. Results showed that metals were observed with higher concentration during the wet season than the dry season. The concentrations of Fe (8.646 ± 0.00 mg/L), Mn (2.691 ± 0.01 mg/L) and Cd (0.090 ± 0.41 mg/L) measured in groundwater were significantly higher than those measured in surface water. However, only Cu was observed with higher concentration (0.322 ± 0.06 mg/L) in surface water during the wet season. Furthermore, the degree of contamination (C d ) and the heavy metal pollution index (HPI) were evaluated for both the wet and dry seasons. Results showed that few samples were found in the category of portable drinking water while majority are within the "poor" and "very poor" classes which require proper treatment before consumption. The oral hazard index (HI oral ) results showed that none of the samples are suitable for consumption; therefore, cause potential non-carcinogenic health issues to the consumer (HI oral > 1). Moreover, children are more at risk than adults in the study districts (higher HI values in both seasons). This study recommends frequent monitoring of quality of water and also effluent waste treatment by the major source of pollution.

Abstract:Groundwater contamination poses significant challenges to public health and sustainable development in Malawi, where approximately 80 % of the population relies on groundwater sources for drinking water. This study investigates the presence and drivers of nitrate and E. coli contamination in groundwater used for drinking. Analysis was conducted on results from 3388 boreholes/tube wells for nitrate contamination and 2418 drinking water sources drawn from groundwater for E. coli contamination. Overall, 6.11 % and 57.2 % of water-points did not meet WHO guidelines for safe drinking water quality for nitrate and E. coli contamination, respectively. Through a mixed-method approach, utilizing generalised linear mixed models and random forest regression modelling, the study identifies factors relating to sanitation usage as critical drivers of both nitrate and E coli contamination. Pit-latrine usage was identified as a particularly important factor in contamination; accounting for pit latrine density specifically, rather than population density, resulted in better model prediction for both nitrate and high E. coli contamination indicating that consideration of the specific type of sanitation is important in predicting water quality In addition, a stable isotope tracer analysis method to validate predictions and monitor nitrate in drinking water was piloted, identifying human waste as a likely source of nitrate contamination. Overall, this study underscores the urgency of addressing sanitation-related contamination of drinking water sources to ensure access to safe drinking water in low-income settings.

Abstract:Nutrients are essential for the growth of aquatic life; however, in excess, they can result in a decline in water quality, posing serious risks to both human and aquatic organisms. Human activities, such as urbanisation, industry, and farming, can increase the amount of nutrients and other elements that reach receiving waterbodies like Lake Victoria in Uganda, which can be problematic at elevated levels. There is therefore a strong need to evaluate recent changes in pollutant concentrations and their potential negative effects. To contribute to this gap and to explore the pollutant changes in Lake Victoria, a series of water chemistry data (phosphate, nitrate, potassium, ammonium, sodium, sulphate, silica and chlorine) was collected between 2016 and 2023 in Uganda's Napoleon Gulf (NG) and Murchison Bay (MB), primarily by the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE). These locations were chosen based on their vicinity to expanding urban centres and agriculture, and they are also areas where fishing frequently occurs. The datasets were collected at different water depths (0.5–24 m). Data were analysed with the use of IBM's Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 28.0) software and confirmed the excessive concentrations of pollutants within MB compared to NG. The analysis identified the different nutrient types that exceeded internationally recognised thresholds relating to acceptable water quality during the data collection period. Seasonal variations were observed, during the dry season; nutrient levels, however, in NG showed higher nutrient concentrations during the wet season. The study's capacity to inform local authorities and policymakers about such potential major sources of pollution is of crucial importance for beginning to address the potential impacts on human health and aquatic life.

[A case of atypical type of Sturge-Weber syndrome demonstrated reversible change by MRI FLAIR method in ictus and in postictal state].

Abstract:We report a patient of atypical type of Sturge-Weber syndrome who demonstrated a reversible change by MRI FLAIR method in ictus and postictal state. A 5-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital because of severe headache, vomiting and loss of consciousness with his eyes conjugated to left for a few minutes. He had no facial nevus and other abnormal findings in physical examination. CT scan showed two small calcifications in the right occipital lobe. Postcontrast T 1-weighted image of MRI demonstrated a right parieto-occipital leptomeningeal enhancement. We diagnosed this case as an atypical type of Sturge-Weber syndrome. Although, on admission, FLAIR method showed the area of high signal intensity, after anticonvulsant therapy, those abnormal area disappeared. It is presumably detected by FLAIR method slight extravasation of plasma element in the surface of the brain due to regional hyperperfusion in ictus.
Antibiotic resistance of E. coli isolates from different water sources in Mbarara, Uganda

Abstract:Escherichia coli is widely used as an indicator of recent faecal pollution of water. Most E. coli strains are commensals; however, isolates in water samples have been shown to carry antibiotic resistance determinants. A total of 47 E. coli were isolated from selected drinking water sources in Mbarara, Uganda. The isolates were examined for their susceptibility to seven antibiotics and the presence of nine antibiotic-resistance genes (mostly β-lactamase genes) and class 1 integrons. Isolates showed a high resistance to ampicillin of 55.5% and a high sensitivity to azithromycin and gentamicin at 98 and 96%, respectively. PCR analysis showed the presence of extended spectrum β-lactamase genes blaCTX-M-32 and blaCMY-2 in 64 and 36% of the isolates. The carbapenemase genes blaOXA-48, blaVIM-2, blaNDM-1, and blaKPC-3 were either not detected or only in a very small number of the isolates, whereas class 1 integrons were present in 68% of the isolates. This study proves, that antimicrobial resistance exists in E. coli in water used for drinking purposes in Mbarara city. There is a need for public health actors to improve surveillance of microbiological quality of drinking water to minimize health risks.

Nanoscale integrin ligand patterns determine melanoma cell behavior.

Abstract:Cells use integrin receptors to adhere onto surfaces by binding to ligands such as the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) motif. Cancer cells make use of this adhesion process, which has motivated the development of integrin-directed drugs. However, those drugs may exert paradoxical effects on tumor progression, which raises the question of how integrin function is governed in tumor cells on the nanoscale. We have utilized precisely defined and tunable RGD ligand site densities spanning 1 order of magnitude, i.e., 103 to 1145 ligand sites/μm(2), by using RGD-functionalized gold nanoparticle patterns immobilized on glass by block copolymer (micellar) nanolithography. In an αVβ3 integrin-dependent fashion, human melanoma cells spread, formed focal contacts, and reorganized cytoskeletal fibers on a physiologically relevant RGD density of 349 sites/μm(2). Intriguingly, low doses of solute RGD "shifted" the optimal densities of immobilized ligand along with corresponding melanoma cell integrin clusters and cytoskeletal changes toward those typical for "intermediate" ligand presentation. Consequently, melanoma cells were forced into a "permissive" state, optimizing interactions with suboptimal nanostructured biomimetic surfaces, thus providing an explanation for the seemingly paradoxical effects on tumor progression and a potential clue for individualized antitumoral therapies.

Abstract:Background: Today, close to a billion people mostl living in the developing world do not have access to safe and adequate water. Several studies in Ethiopia indicate that the majority of the drinking water sources had coliform count beyond the WHO standard. Therefore, Regular quality control mechanisms need to be in place. The objective of this study is therefore to determine the level of faecal coliform contamination of drinking water and its associated factors in North Gondar Zone, Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in rural parts of North Gondar Zone from April to July, 2016. Water samples were taken from water sources using standardized water sampling techniques. Face-to-face interview with structured questionnaires were used to collect socio-economic and behavioral data. Univariate and multivariate analyses were done using logistic regression models. Results: A total of 736 households participated in the study. The prevalence of positive faecal coliform at water sources in North Gondar Zone was found to be 56.5% (n=416) with [95% CI (53-60)]. In multivariate analysis, educational status [(AOR): 0.28, 95% CI (0.1-0.8], sanitary risk of contamination [AOR): 513, 95%CI (51-511)] and water shortage experience [AOR: 0.25, 95% CI (0.12-0.5)] are variables identified as predictors for faecal coliform contamination of water in the source. Conclusion: In this study, the prevalence of positive faecal coliform at water source was high. Educational status, sanitary Risk of contamination at the water source, water shortage experience had significant associations with the presence of faecal coliform in drinking water sources.

Abstract:The study evaluated water access and disease prevalence in the Rhino Camp refugee settlement by mapping water sources, interviewing residents, and reviewing health centre records. Primary water sources were tanks providing 10.2 litres per person per day (l/p/d). Microbial contamination including total coliforms reaching 2.8 × 104 cfu/ml (household container – Tika), thermotolerant coliforms, and faecal enterococci were observed throughout the water supply chain, suggesting faecal contamination and posing a health risk. We attributed this to poor handling and storage related to poor sanitation in the settlement, highlighting the importance of promoting hygiene practices among refugees, particularly in the Ofua Zone, which had the highest contamination risks and the highest sanitary risk scores. Malaria and typhoid were the most prevalent diseases, with Ofua having the highest disease incidence. Water collection was mostly done by adult females and female children (34.7 and 30.3%, respectively) although water collection was generally low (<4 times a day). Boiling water was associated (p 20 l/p/d), water treatment, and education on hygiene practices especially for adult females are essential in lowering contamination and the incidence of diseases.

Abstract:Across the water sector, Escherichia coli is the preferred microbial water quality indicator and current guidance upholds that it indicates recent faecal contamination. This has been challenged, however, by research demonstrating growth of E . coli in the environment. In this study, we used whole genome sequencing to investigate the links between E . coli and recent faecal contamination in drinking water. We sequenced 103 E . coli isolates sampled from 9 water supplies in rural Kitui County, Kenya, including points of collection (n = 14) and use (n = 30). Biomarkers for definitive source tracking remain elusive, so we analysed the phylogenetic grouping, multi-locus sequence types (MLSTs), allelic diversity, and virulence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes of the isolates for insight into their likely source. Phylogroup B1, which is generally better adapted to water environments, is dominant in our samples (n = 69) and allelic diversity differences (z = 2.12, p = 0.03) suggest that naturalised populations may be particularly relevant at collection points with lower E . coli concentrations (<50 / 100mL). The strains that are more likely to have originated from human and/or recent faecal contamination (n = 50), were found at poorly protected collection points (4 sites) or at points of use (12 sites). We discuss the difficulty of interpreting health risk from E . coli grab samples, especially at household level, and our findings support the use of E . coli risk categories and encourage monitoring that accounts for sanitary conditions and temporal variability.

Abstract:This research employed the groundwater quality index (GWQI), multivariate statistical methods, and human health risk assessment model to investigate the suitability of groundwater for domestic uses in northern Khartoum state, Sudan. The groundwater samples were analyzed for eleven physiochemical parameters, including pH, EC, TDS, TH, Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , HCO 3 − and the primary investigation indicated the deviation of these parameters from World Health Organization (WHO) standards. The hydrochemical analysis revealed different groundwater facies with the dominance of Ca–Mg–HCO 3 water type. Consequently, the groundwater samples were classified, based on GWQI, into three categories as 76.4% of the samples fall in the excellent water class, 17.6% are projected in the good water class, and 5.9% of groundwater samples are considered unsuitable for human consumption. The multivariate statistical methods were applied, including Pearson's correlation analysis, principal component analyses (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Three principal components (PCs) explaining 86.07% of total variances are extracted. These PCs indicated that rock-water interactions and agricultural practices influence groundwater quality in the study area. Additionally, HCA is used to categorize groundwater samples based on the concentration of the physiochemical parameters. Consequently, three types of groundwater were identified as low, medium, and highly mineralized. In the final stage, the non-carcinogenic human health risk was assessed based on the concentration of NO 3 − using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) models. The obtained hazard quotient for children indicated that 64.7% of groundwater samples are beyond the permissible limit (1 <), and the use of these samples may result in health consequences. Therefore, remedial measures are suggested for the sustainable use of groundwater.
Contamination of groundwater with sulfamethoxazole and antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli in informal settlements in Kisumu, Kenya

Abstract:High frequency of antibiotic detection in groundwater in informal settlements is attributed to increased usage and improper disposal, thus difficult to identify sources of antibiotic resistance in the environment, worsened by inadequate sanitation facilities and increased population density, particularly in developing-countries. Reliance on groundwater exposes them to pollutants and risk of antibiotic resistance, in addition to experiencing inequities in accessing vital services. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, used for prophylaxis by HIV/AIDS patients were tested in 49 groundwater sources in Kisumu, Kenya. Only Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was found, with a detection frequency of 14.3% and concentrations ranging from below limit of quantification (LOQ) to 258.2 ng/L. Trimethoprim (TMP), marketed in combination with sulfamethoxazole, was not detected, owing to its high distribution coefficient (kPa7.12) and, generally, being a bigger molecule with modest water mobility and solubility. Furthermore, TMP ratio in cotrimoxazole is low (5:1), it is expected that mass loading will be lower, as well as influence of the study area's hydrogeology, where soil is clayey with high porosity and permeability. Escherichia coli was recovered in 98% (n = 48) of water samples, with counts ranging from 16 to 8,850 MPN/100ml. Additionally, resistance to sulfamethoxazole was identified in 6% (n = 3) samples with Inhibition Zone Diameters of 0.8mm(resistant), 10.5mm (resistant), and 11.5mm (intermediate), but not among samples where SMX was detected. Antibiotic concentrations in water that can cause resistance are unknown because antibiotic-resistant E . coli was not found in water samples where sulfamethoxazole was identified, raising concerns about f environmental resistance spread. Concentration of SMX was lower in a previous research, which only collected water from one groundwater source, than the current study, which included additional samples (49). Presence of SMX and Escherichia coli resistance is of concern and necessitates greater attention and regular monitoring for potential contaminants and resistance trigger to avert potential risks to human health.

Abstract:Access to safe drinking water is considered a fundamental human right, yet, in most developing countries, this is not the case, as microbial contamination of drinking water is commonly responsible for the transmission of many waterborne diseases, including cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea, and dysentery. The study aimed to assess the microbiological quality of drinking water from three communities along the Odaw River in Accra, known for their poor waste disposal practices and incidents of flooding. Water samples were collected from community tap water and locally manufactured sachet water from three flood-prone communities along the Odaw River, namely, Alajo, Avenor, and Agbogbloshie, and analyzed for the presence of indicator organisms: total coliforms, faecal coliforms, and Escherichia coli (E. coli). All brands of sachet water sampled from the three communities had no microbial contamination. Conversely, most community tap water showed contamination with indicator organisms that exceeded the international standard of 0 per 100 mL for potable water. The presence of faecal coliforms and E. coli in community shared tap water is an indication of poor water quality and may present a risk for waterborne disease outbreaks among households and communities.
