Abstract:Heavy-metal contamination in river and ocean is a critical environmental issue that endangers marine ecosystems and human health. Therefore, conducting extensive research to devise effective mitigation measures is imperative. Sediment samples were taken randomly throughout the study area. Analysis was done to determine the presence of different metals, including arsenic, cadmium, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, lead, and manganese. The assessment of different pollution levels was done by using various pollution indicators including "geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF)" for accuracy. The Igeo measurement for Cd indicated varying pollution, ranging from moderate to significantly polluted, while Mn revealed no contamination. Elements such as Ni, Cr, Cu, and Zn showed a moderate level of contamination. The contamination factor values exhibited a range of 0.436 (Pb) to 7.637 (Cd), with average values spanning from 0.9176 (Mn) to 4.9714 (Cd), suggesting significant regional variation. EF exhibits a pattern of contamination comparable to that of Igeo. The noncarcinogenic risk associated with exposure to Cd and As exceeded the higher limit (HI > 1) for children and adults. Furthermore, the carcinogenic risk presented by pollutants such as copper (Cu), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) was found to exceed the limits in children. In adults, only arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) were shown to represent a higher risk of cancer than the limit of 10 −4 . The PCA analysis revealed that two (PCs) accounted for more than 65% of the total variance in the River Ravi, as determined by eigenvalues greater than 1. This study underscores the importance of the ongoing monitoring and management of heavy-metal pollution to ensure sustainable marine ecosystem development and public health protection.

Abstract:The objective of the current research was to examine the water quality of the River Ravi and the River Sutlej, with a specific focus on potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Additionally, we sought to monitor the sources of pollution in these rivers by gathering samples from the primary drains that carry industrial and municipal waste into these water bodies. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of PTEs in surface water on groundwater quality by collecting groundwater samples from nearby populated areas. A total of 30 samples were collected from these three sources: rivers (6 samples), drains (9 samples), and groundwater (15 samples). The analysis revealed that the levels of PTEs in the samples from these three resources having a mean value: arsenic (As) 23.5 μg/L, zinc (Zn) 2.35 mg/L, manganese (Mn) 0.51 mg/L, lead (Pb) 6.63 μg/L, and chromium (Cr) 10.9 μg/L, exceeded the recommended values set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, PTEs including (As 84%), (Zn 65%), (Mn 69%), (Pb 53%), (Cr 53%), and (Ni 27%), samples were beyond the recommended values of WHO. The results of the Principal Component Analysis indicated that surface water and groundwater exhibited total variability of 83.87% and 85.97%, respectively. This indicates that the aquifers in the study area have been contaminated due to both natural geogenic factors and anthropogenic sources. These sources include the discharge of industrial effluents, wastewater from municipal sources, mining activities, agricultural practices, weathering of rocks, and interactions between rocks and water. Spatial distribution maps clearly illustrated the widespread mobilization of PTEs throughout the study area. Furthermore, a health risk assessment was conducted to evaluate the potential adverse health effects of PTEs through the ingestion of drinking groundwater by both children and adults. Health risk assessment result show the mean carcinogenic values for As, Cr, Pb and Ni in children are calculated to be (1.88E-04), (2.61E-04), (2.16E-02), and (5.74E-05), respectively. Similarly, the mean carcinogenic values for the above mentioned PTEs in adults were recorded to be (2.39E-05), (3.32E-05), (1.19E-03), and (7.29E-06) respectively. The total hazard index values for As, Zn, Cr, Pb, Mn, Cu, and Ni in children were observed to be (9.07E + 00), (9.95E-07), (4.59E-04), (5.75E-04), (4.72E-05), (2.78E-03), and (5.27E-05) respectively. The analysis revealed that As has an adverse effect on the population of the study area as compared to other PTEs investigated in this study.

Abstract:This study examined potentially toxic elements (PTE) of water and sediments in the Darband and Samana streams of Hangu District. Darband and Samana streams are the main fluvial ecosystems of Hangu District, Pakistan, directly or indirectly affecting more than 0.52 Million people. Water and sediment samples were collected and analyzed for PTE utilizing inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Water characteristics of Darband and Samana streams were noted within the WHO drinking water guidelines, except for Turbidity and sulfate. Most water characteristics showed higher values in the Samana stream than in the Darband stream. Similarly, most of PTE showed higher concentrations in sediments collected from the Samana stream than the Darband stream. For ecological risk evaluation, several pollution indices were employed to assess the eco-toxicological consequences. The highest contamination factor (CF) value of 15 and 20 were exhibited by molybdenum (Mo) in the Samana and Darband streams showing very high contamination. Similarly, the pollution load index (PLI) showed that 24% of the sediment samples were polluted (PLI > 1). Furthermore, a high ecological risk in a range of 160 < ERI < 320 was observed for Mo, while a low ecological risk ERI < 40 was by As for the Darband and Samana streams sediments. Statistical techniques revealed that various anthropogenic sources primarily contaminated in water and sediment. Therefore, this study recommends regular monitoring PTE contaminations in the area to avoid any health hazards in the future.

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) pollution is one of the major issues of concern in the world due to its serious health consequences on humans and ecology. In this study, riverine water from the River Kabul in Pakistan was studied using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the variation, routes, and possible socio-ecological hazards of chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb). The results revealed significant HMs variation ( p Zn > Ni > Cu > Cd > Pb > Mn > Co > Hg, indicating prevalent metal contaminations in the river. Multivariate statistics showed significant strong positive correlations ( p ≤ 0.01) between the individual HMs contents along the monitoring sites. The strong-moderate levels of Cu, Co, Zn, Mn, Pb, and Cd in riverine systems were observed to be caused by surrounding industrial, agrochemicals, mining, and domestic wastewater discharges along with geogenic sources, the weak levels of Cr and Ni could be induced by erosion of mafic and ultramafic rocks, and mining activities, whereas the low contamination of Hg suggests minimal atmospheric deposition with fewer industrial discharges in the environment. The overall mass flux of the ∑HMs was estimated to be around 164.10 kg/year, with significant HM pollution index (HPI) and pollution index (PI) variations along the river characterizing the potential risk of HMs in decreasing order of Cd > Hg > Cr > Ni > Co > Pb > Mn > Cu > Zn and Cd > Hg > Ni > Pb > Cr > Co > Cu > Mn > Zn, respectively. Individual HM contamination was within the ecological risk threshold (ERI < 110), where, the chronic daily intake (CDIs), hazard quotients (HQs), health indices (HIs), and cancer risks (CRs) of Cd, Ni, Co, Cr, and Pb by daily riverine water ingestion and dermal contact posing considerable human health concerns. To protect the environment and public health, our findings suggest that untreated anthropogenic wastewater discharge into the river system be strictly controlled and regulated through public awareness campaigns and legislation prohibiting the use of herbicides and fertilizers containing high levels of Cr, Ni, Co, Cd, and Pb.

Abstract:Water, forages, and soil contamination with potentially toxic metals (PTMs) through anthropogenic activities has become a significant environmental concern. It is crucial to find out the level of PTMs in water, soil, and forages near industrial areas. The PTMs enter the body of living organisms through these sources and have become a potential risk for humans and animals. Therefore, the present study aims at the health risk assessment of PTMs and their accumulation in soil, water, and forages of three tehsils (Kallar Kahar, Choa Saidan Shah, and Chakwal) in district Chakwal. Samples of wastewater, soil, and forages were collected from various sites of district Chakwal. PTMs detected in the present study were cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni), and their levels were measured through atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAs GF95 graphite furnace auto sampler). Pollution load index (PLI), bio concentration factor (BCF), soil enrichment factors (EF), daily intake value (DIM), and health risk index (HRI) in sheep, cow, and buffalo were also analyzed. The results revealed that the mean concentration (mg/L) of Cd (0.72-0.91 mg/L), Cr (1.84-2.23 mg/L), Pb (0.95-3.22 mg/L), Co (0.74-2.93 mg/L), Cu (0.84-1.96 mg/L), and Ni (1.39-4.39 mg/L) in wastewater samples was higher than permissible limits set by WHO, NEQS, WWF, USEPA, and Pakistan in all three tehsils of district Chakwal. Similarly, in soil samples, concentrations of Cd (1.21-1.95 mg/kg), Cr (38.1-56.4 mg/kg), and Ni (28.3-55.9 mg/kg) were higher than their respective threshold values. The mean concentration of PTMs in forage samples (Parthenium hysterophorus, Mentha spicata, Justicia adhatoda, Calotropis procera, Xanthium strumarium, Amaranthaceae sp.) showed that maximum values of Cd (5.35-7.55 mg/kg), Cr (5.47-7.51 mg/kg), Pb (30-36 mg/kg), and Ni (12.6-57.5 mg/kg) were beyond their safe limit set for forages. PLI, BCF, and EF were > 1.0 for almost all the PTMs. The DIM and HRI for sheep were less than < 1.0 but for cows and buffalo were > 1.0. The current study showed that soil, water, and forages near coal mines area are contaminated with PTMs which enter the food chain and pose significant harm to humans and animals. In order to prevent their dangerous concentration in the food chain, regular assessment of PTMs present in soil, forages, irrigating water, and food is recommended.

Abstract:Groundwater quality was investigated in three urban semi-arid multi-industrial metropolitan areas i.e. (Hayatabad Industrial Estate, Peshawar (HIEP), Gadoon Industrial Estate, Swabi (GIES) and Hattar Industrial Estate, Haripur (HIEH). The main aim of the study was to determine their physicochemical parameters, potentially harmful elements (PHEs) concentration, pollution sources and public health risks in semi-arid multi-industrial metropolitan areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan. The physicochemical parameters (pH, TDS and EC), PHEs (Cd, Zn, Pb, Cr and Ni) concentrations and Mg in drinking water sources were found within the permissible limits, except Fe, which exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) acceptable limit. Among PHEs, Zn had the highest contribution rates of 69.6%, 58.2% and 67.64% in HIEP, GIES and HIEH, respectively, while Cd showed the lowest contribution rates (3.15%, 1.98% and 2.06%) for HIEP, GIES and HIEH respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed significant correlations between parameters, with contributions of industrial effluents and wastewater discharge (46.81%), mixed sources (34.05%) and geo-genic sources (19.14%) for drinking water in the study area. The carcinogenic risk (CR) for Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb, were found within the acceptable threshold value of 1 × 10 −4 . This study suggests that urban groundwater should also be regularly monitored for PHEs contamination as over-extraction, industrialization and informal E-waste recycling events surges the public health risks globally, facing related environmental contamination difficulties of the urban groundwater.

Abstract:Abstract Freshwater ecosystems are being contaminated by heavy metals pollution. The primary source of contamination is wastewater discharged from urban, industrial, and agricultural facilities. The contaminated water contains hazardous amounts of heavy metals mixed in the freshwater ecosystem, causing deleterious impacts on marine life and humans. This review paper highlights the contamination of the freshwater ecosystem of Pakistan with heavy metals. Heavy metals concentration in sediments, water, and fish were assessed in the food chain, and their relationship with sites and sources was explored. It was observed that heavy metals present in freshwater and sediments bio-accumulate into fish organs. It was also found that some parts of freshwaters like River Ravi, Chenab, Kabul, and Indus were highly contaminated, and they posed negative impacts on fish and human health. River Ravi, receiving a huge amount of industrial and sewage wastewater from urban centers and industries of Central Punjab, was highly contaminated compared to other Rivers of Pakistan. The ecosystem health of River Indus was the best among all the rivers of Pakistan due to the enormous volume of water flow and less number of industrial units along with it. Freshwater fish of River Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum are consumable for humans. The presence of heavy metals also causes social, environmental, and economic problems. Therefore, the wastewater should be treated before discharge into freshwater streams and rivers to lessen the harmful impacts of heavy metals on marine life and human beings.

Abstract:The presence of toxic substances in aquifers, particularly potentially toxic heavy metals, is an important environmental and social concern worldwide. These heavy metals are capable to exert many injurious health effects in human beings by intake of drinking metal-contaminated water. However, very little attention is paid towards quantitative and qualitative analysis of groundwater used for drinking purpose in several less-developed countries. Therefore, this study was intended to estimate, for the first time, the heavy metal levels in groundwater/drinking water in District Vehari, Pakistan. A total of 129 groundwater samples were obtained and subjected to analyze heavy metal concentrations (lead, copper, cadmium, nickel, manganese, chromium, iron, and zinc). Moreover, pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, total dissolved solids, and anion (carbonates, chloride, and bicarbonates) and cation (calcium, potassium, sodium, lithium, and barium) contents of groundwater were also determined. It was noticed that the values of several groundwater physicochemical characteristics such as cation contents, alkalinity, chloride concentration, and especially the concentrations of heavy metals such as Pb (93%), Cd (68%), and Fe (100%) were higher than their limit values given by WHO. Principal component analysis separately grouped heavy metals and physicochemical characteristics of groundwater. The risk assessment indices predicted potential carcinogenic risks due to the consumption of metal-rich groundwater, predominantly with Cd (0.0007–0.03). The mean hazard quotient (HQ) values for all the metals were < 1, while Pb showed HQ > 1 envisaging non-carcinogenic risk with the consumption of studied groundwater. The findings of the study emphasized on the need of appropriate approaches to remediate groundwater before being used for drinking purpose.

A review of heavy metals pollution in riverine sediment from various Asian and European countries: Distribution, sources, and environmental risk

Abstract:Riverine sediments are important reservoirs of heavy metals, representing both historical and contemporary anthropogenic activity within the watershed. This review has been conducted to examine the distribution of heavy metals in the surface sediment of 52 riverine systems from various Asian and European countries, as well as to determine their sources and environmental risks. The results revealed significant variability in heavy metal contamination in the world's riverine systems, with certain hotspots exhibiting concentrations that exceeded the permissible limits set by environmental quality standards. Among the studied countries, India has the highest levels of chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) contamination in its riverine systems, followed by Iran > Turkey > Spain > Vietnam > Pakistan > Malaysia > Taiwan > China > Nigeria > Bangladesh > Japan. Heavy metal pollution in the world's riverine systems was quantified using pollution evaluation indices. The Contamination Factor (CF) revealed moderate contamination (1 ≤ CF < 3) throughout the geological units, with the exception of Pb, Cd, and Cu. The Contamination Degree (CD) classifies the contamination level into different categories: Low degree of contamination (CD < 6), moderate degree of contamination (6 ≤ CD < 12), considerable degree of contamination (12 ≤ CD < 24), and a very high degree of contamination (CD ≥ 24), while the Pollution Load Index (PLI) estimate the total amount of heavy metal pollution in riverine sediments, with Turkey having the highest PLI value of 6.512, followed by Spain, Vietnam, Taiwan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Iran, and Nigeria. In applied multivariate statistics, correlation analysis determined the fate and distribution of heavy metals in riverine systems, while Principal Component Analysis (PCA) elucidated the potential sources, including industrial, agrochemical, mining, and domestic wastewater discharges, lubricant leakages, multiple geogenic inputs, erosion of mafic and ultramafic rocks, and minimal atmospheric deposition. As per Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI) perspectives, Vietnam, Spain, and Turkey have the highest ecological risk, followed by Nigeria > Pakistan > Bangladesh > China > Taiwan > Japan and Iron, while the potential risks of ∑non-carcinogenic Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Co, Zn, and Mn for exposed human children and adults through ingestion and dermal contact were significantly influenced between acceptable to high risk, necessitating special attention from pollution control agencies.
Characterization, Source Apportionment and Health Risk Assessment of Trace Metals in Groundwater of Metropolitan Area in Lahore, Pakistan

Abstract:The quality of groundwater resources is deteriorating worldwide since last few decades. Evaluating trace metal contents, sources, and their potentially harmful effects in the groundwater are the most important factors for assessing human health risks. The current study was aimed to characterize potentially toxic and essential metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, Mn, Ag, Li, Cu, Fe, Zn, Sr, Na, K, Ca and Mg) and physiochemical parameters in the groundwater of Lahore, Pakistan in pre- and post-monsoon seasons. Significant spatial/seasonal variations were observed in the metal levels; Fe, Zn, Co, and Cu contents were comparatively higher in pre-monsoon, whereas, Mn, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni levels were elevated in post-monsoon season. Mean levels of Ni, Pb, Co, Cr and Cd were exceeding the national and international permissible limits. Multivariate analysis revealed major anthropogenic contamination of the groundwater (mostly emanating from domestic wastes, automobile emissions, industrial effluents and combustion processes) while significant contributions were observed for mixed sources. Health risk assessment showed that non-carcinogenic risks in terms of hazard quotient (HQ ing ) for children exceeded the safe level (HQ ing > 1) for Co, Cd, and Pb in pre-monsoon whereas Ni and Cr surpassed the safe limit in post-monsoon. In case of adults, Co and Pd were in excess of the safe limit in both seasons. This study revealed that children are more vulnerable to non-carcinogenic risks than adults. In addition, the carcinogenic health risks associated with Pb, Ni, Cd, and Cr contents were significantly elevated than the safety limit (1.0 × 10 –06 ). Thus, it is highly recommended that the groundwater should be continuously monitored and appositely treated before ultimate use.

Abstract:The global concern of heavy metal toxicity has affected all nations, as the discharge of agricultural runoff and untreated industrial waste into water bodies, including rivers, leads to environmental toxicology. This increased level of heavy metals poses risks not only for marine life but also to those who consume them. While fish is an important protein source, consuming contaminated fish containing high levels of heavy metals can have severe adverse effects on human health. Therefore, it is crucial to address these pollution sources effectively in Pakistan, where a significant portion of the population relies on agriculture and fishing for their living. The country's rapid industrialization and urbanization have substantially increased pollutants in its rivers and other water bodies. The current body of research has indicated that the elevated levels of heavy metals in the ecosystem, including the Indus River, pose a significant threat to the local ecosystem and the well-being of marine life. Heavy metal pollution in Pakistani rivers originates from multiple sources, such as industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and municipal waste. The unregulated discharge of industrial waste into rivers is a major contributor to heavy metal pollution in Pakistani rivers. Moreover, the excessive and uncontrolled use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture equally contributes to the contamination of rivers with heavy metals. The current study is a review article, which provides a comprehensive explanation of how environmental toxicology affects the ecosystem, especially concerning the rivers of Pakistan.

Abstract:This research highlights the distribution of heavy metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Co and Mn) in Ravi and Chenab and assesses their effect on ecosystem health. Samples of plant species and sediments at eight sampling sites were collected and analysed by the PIXE technique. Heavy metal concentrations (μg/g) of Zn (7.98–411.23), Ni (12.59–209), Cu (3.74–38.77) and Mn (0–730.21) in river Ravi and concentrations of Zn (49.32–274.30), Ni (1.05–141.21) and Mn (41.66–519.47) in river Chenab were found to be high but Heavy metal concentration in the two compartments were in the following order plants > sediments. Heavy metals of sediments and plants depict that there are significant correlations between Cu (0.994), Zn (0.986) and Cr (0.978) in river Ravi and Ni (1.000), Zn (.990) and Cr (.978) in river Chenab. The results show the potential of heavy metals from plants in two rivers of Pakistan.

Abstract:The surface and groundwater are the main sources for human consumption, and the groundwater is being used as a supplement where the surface water is not adequate due to insufficient accessibility and contamination. Fast growing population, anthropogenic activities creating serious environmental concerns on the deterioration of groundwater. The quality of drinking water has a significant effect on human health. Contaminated surface and groundwater may be the cause of a number of diseases in 3rd world countries. According to the survey conducted by Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) in 22 districts of Sindh, the weathering of rocks and anthropogenic activities are viewed as principal natural and artificial sources of heavy metals (HM). The aim of this research was to investigate concentration of heavy metal (Co, Cd, Cr, As, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, Pb, and Fe) and the quality of the groundwater of district Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan. The research examined the possible health risk of the population triggered by consuming heavy metals (HM). HM concentrations were analyzed by flame air-acetylene atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) using standard burner head with 800 (Perkin Elmer, Singapore). The results were compared with the permissible limit of the WHO, and samples of reference water (Rfw) were collected from a water supply scheme of Hyderabad city. The health risk assessment of hazard quotient (HQ) and chronic daily intake (CDI) was calculated based on the concentration of HM. The CDI values for groundwater Hyderabad rural (GWHR) and groundwater Hyderabad city (GWHC) were higher than the threshold value of 1.00 shown in decreasing order Zn > Fe > Ni > Pb > Mn > Cu > Cd > Cr > Co and Fe > Zn > Cr > Mn > Ni > Co > Pb > Cu, respectively. The HQ values of GWHR and GWHC were found greater than 1.00 in lowering order: Cd > Co > Pb > Cu and Co > Cd > Pb and Cr, respectively. The results of CDI and HQ values were calculated greater than the safe limit 1.00 for multiple metal ions and may be a cause of indicated health risk for the consumers of the district of Hyderabad. This study confirmed that specific methods are required for the incorporated evaluation of the groundwater pollution and affords a systematic foundation for the strategic destiny making plans and complete management for the availability of hygienic water for the habitants of the study area.

Abstract:Industrial and agricultural water run-off are polluting the aquatic ecosystem by depositing different toxic trace elements (TTEs) in riverine system. It has become a global concern impacting not only the well-being of aquatic organisms but human health as well. Current study evaluated the impact of four TTEs (Cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni)) in three organs (liver, gills, and muscles) of five fish species viz, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Wallago attu, Mastacembelus armatus, and Cirrhinus mrigala collected from right and left banks of Punjnad headworks during winter, spring and summer. We investigated accumulation (mg/kg) of these TTEs in fish in addition to the human health risk assessment by estimating exposure hazards, hazardous index (THQ and TTHQ) and metal pollution index (MPI). The obtained results showed that W. attu accumulated significantly more TTEs (p < 0.00) as compared to other fish. Among seasons, summer had significantly more (p < 0.00) accumulation of TTEs than other seasons. Lead (Pb) accumulation was highest across TTEs in fish liver as compared to gills and muscles. Right bank showed higher accumulation (p < 0.00) of all TTEs in all fish species in contrast to the left bank. The human health risk assessment showed that Cd and Pb had higher exposure levels than Cu and Ni. Furthermore, the THQ was in the order of Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu. All fish species had THQ 1 for Cd and Pb and TTHQ > 1 for all fish. MPI index showed moderate to high level of TTE contamination if all fish species. The study concluded that right bank has higher metal accumulation than left bank. However, fish consumption from both of the study site was not safe for human consumption.

Abstract:Lake ecosystems in northern Pakistan are the most critical resources that maintain and regulate water flow for downstream agricultural, domestic, industrial, and ecological processes. One consequence of these processes is that ecosystems deposit heavy metals (HMs), where lake stagnant conditions result in high vulnerability of water resources. For this purpose, the present study examined HMs such as cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) concentrations in high-altitude lakes (HAL) sediments of Mansehra district, northern Pakistan. Sediment samples were collected from the five HAL. This study used HM concentrations in lake sediments for the pollution factors such as contamination factor ( C f ), pollution load index (PLI), sediment pollution index (SPI), ecological risk assessment (ERA), and risk index (RI). Among HMs, Fe showed the uppermost levels of 1410 mg/kg in lake sediment, while Cd with lowermost levels of 1.05 mg/kg. Results revealed that most HM concentrations in HAL sediments were within the threshold of sediments quality guidelines (SQGs), except for Cd. Among lakes, the sediments of Siri Lake showed higher contamination of HMs than others. Siri Lake sediments also showed higher C f , PLI, ERA, and RI values than others. The majority of HMs in HAL sediments showed no contamination, except for Cd (considerable) and Pb (moderate) levels to the exposed aquatic ecosystem. This study revealed that 95% of sediment samples in HAL were noted low to medium-level risks to the exposed aquatic communities. Statistical and geospatial analyses revealed that geogenic sources of contamination are a significant contributor to HM contamination of HAL sediments compared to others.

Abstract:Trace heavy metals, such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel, and mercury, are important environmental pollutants, particularly in areas with high anthropogenic pressure. In addition to these metals, copper, manganese, iron, and zinc are also important trace micronutrients. The presence of trace heavy metals in the atmosphere, soil, and water can cause serious problems to all organisms, and the ubiquitous bioavailability of these heavy metal can result in bioaccumulation in the food chain which especially can be highly dangerous to human health. This study reviews the heavy metal contamination in several areas of Pakistan over the past few years, particularly to assess the heavy metal contamination in water (ground water, surface water, and waste water), soil, sediments, particulate matter, and vegetables. The listed contaminations affect the drinking water quality, ecological environment, and food chain. Moreover, the toxicity induced by contaminated water, soil, and vegetables poses serious threat to human health.

Abstract:Water quality is a big concern for the humankind as it is the most important natural resource. Water is polluted by increasing activities of population and the necessity to provide them with goods and services that use water as a vital resource. In this study, surface water samples were collected in the summer and the winter season from Rupsa river, Bangladesh, and pH, electrical conductivity (EC), Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb concentrations were analyzed to assess the metal toxicity, identify the possible sources and determine health risk from metals in water. During the the summer season, the mean concentrations of Cr, Pb, As, Cu, Ni and Cd were measured as 7.20 ± 0.613, 7.09 ± 0.904, 5.45 ± 0.441, 5.36 ± 0.471, 3.85 ± 0.694 and 0.975 ± 0.106 µg/L, respectively, whereas the concentrations were measured as 8.87 ± 0.756, 7.32 ± 0.93, 6.05 ± 0.490, 6.02 ± 0.529, 5.48 ± 0.986 and 1.38 ± 0.151 µg/L, respectively, during the the winter season. Source identification like correlation analysis, Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were applied to identify the source of toxic metals in water. Total heavy metal toxicity load and heavy metal evaluation index values were found to be higher than permissible value except for Cu. According to the ecological risk index classification, 85% of the total samples were found to pose moderate ecological risks, while the rest 15% were found to pose low ecological risks during both seasons. As showed high non-carcinogenic risk on the basis of single element via oral exposure. The hazard index value for oral exposure by male, female and children was found to be 4.17E + 00, 3.67E + 00 and 8.64E + 00, respectively; indicating that non-carcinogenic effects are obvious to occur. The carcinogenic risks of Ni and As due to regular exposure via oral and dermal contact pathways were higher than the standard value (>1.0E-04) which anticipated possible cancer risks to male, female and children in the study area.

Abstract:This study investigated the heavy metals (HM) contamination in the water of Indus River and its tributaries, northern Pakistan. Water samples (n=44) were collected along with the five geological units: Kohistan batholith, Chilas complex, Kamila amphibolites, Jijal complex, and Indian plate. Observed HM levels were within the WHO drinking water guidelines except for Ni (23.7 µg/L) in the Jijal complex and Pb (10.6 µg/L) at on the Indian plate. Hazard quotient (HQ) values were observed < 1, suggesting no health risk through water consumption. Statistical analyses revealed that bedrock geology plays a major role in the HM distribution in water of the study area.
