Abstract:The alpha 2-HS-glycoprotein (AHSG) is a plasma protein reported to play roles in bone mineralization and in the immune response. It is composed of two subunits, the A and B chains. Recombinant plasmids containing human cDNA AHSG have been isolated by screening an adult human liver library with a mixed oligonucleotide probe. The cDNA clones containing AHSG inserts span approximately 1.5 kilobase pairs and include the entire AHSG coding sequence, demonstrating that the A and B chains are encoded by a single mRNA transcript. The cDNA sequence predicts an 18-amino-acid signal peptide, followed by the A-chain sequence of AHSG. A heretofore unseen connecting sequence of 40 amino acids was deduced between the A- and B-chain sequences. The connecting sequence demonstrates the unique amino acid doublets and collagen triplets found in the A and B chains; it is not homologous with other reported amino acid sequences. The connecting sequence may be cleaved in a posttranslational step by limited proteolysis before mature AHSG is released into the circulation or may vary in its presence because of alternative processing. The AHSG cDNA was utilized for mapping the AHSG gene to the 3q21----qter region of human chromosome 3. The availability of the AHSG cDNA clone will facilitate the analysis of its genetic control and gene expression during development and bone formation.

Abstract:The growing use of lithium (Li) in industrial and energy applications and increasing demand worldwide has inevitably resulted in its wide dispersal, representing a significant threat to aquatic systems. Unfortunately, as a ubiquitous emerging contaminant, the comprehensive toxicological information regarding Li at multifarious levels is limited. To diminish this gap, this work was focused to explore Li-induced cascading effects on Daphnia magna as a key species in freshwater ecosystems . Specifically, the organisms were chronically exposed to gradient Li concentrations with emphasis on characterizing life-history traits from individual to population scale, primarily as observed by a markedly concentration-dependent decrease along exposure gradients. In parallel, a robust set of biomarkers relating to energy reserves, antioxidant and biotransformation enzymes, cellular damage, ionoregulation and neurotoxicity were assayed for further understanding potential underlying mechanisms. As a result, biomarker alterations were characterized by significant decreases in energy storage and enzymatic profiles of antioxidant and biotransformation systems, not only triggering an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and elimination under Li exposure, but compromising the fecundity fitness of phenotypical costs. In contrast, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were remarkably enhanced as a consequence of inefficient antioxidant and biotransformation capacity leading to lipid peroxidation (LPO). Additionally, Li exerted a dose-dependent biphasic effect on the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), Na + ,K + -ATPase and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by interfering with inherent balance. In terms of responsive patterns and dose-effect trends, the integrated biomarker response indices (IBRv2) and star plots were consistent with the differences in biomarker profiles, not only presenting comprehensively biological effects in a visualized form, but signaling the importance of progressive induced changes in an integrative way. Overall, these findings highlighted the need for elucidating Li-produced impacts from a comprehensive perspective, providing valuable insights into better understanding the toxicity of Li in relation to aquatic ecosystem functioning and ecological relevance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Experiments were done on five lambs to determine if carotid denervation influences the arousal and cardiopulmonary responses to rapidly developing hypoxemia during sleep. Each lamb was anesthetized and instrumented for recordings of electrocorticogram, electrooculogram, nuchal and diaphragm electromyograms, and measurements of arterial blood pressure and arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation. The carotid chemoreceptors and baroreceptors were denervated, a tracheostomy was done, and a fenestrated tracheostomy tube was placed in the trachea so that the inspired oxygen mixture could be changed quickly. No sooner than 3 d after surgery, measurements were made in quiet sleep and active sleep during control periods when the animal was breathing 21% oxygen and during experimental periods of rapidly developing hypoxemia when the animal was breathing 5% oxygen. Rapidly developing hypoxemia was terminated during each epoch by changing the inspired gas mixture back to 21% oxygen once the animal aroused from sleep or once the arterial Hb oxygen saturation decreased to 30%. Arousal occurred during only 4 of 11 epochs in quiet sleep and during only 3 of 14 epochs in active sleep before the arterial Hb oxygen saturation decreased to 30%. These data provide evidence that the carotid chemoreceptors and/or carotid baroreceptors play a major role in causing arousal from sleep during rapidly developing hypoxemia in lambs.
Influences of Lithium on Soil Microbial Biomass, Bacterial Community Structure, Diversity, and Function Potential

Abstract:Lithium is an emerging contaminant, but there is little knowledge about its influences on soil microbial ecosystem. In this work, soils were treated with 10 to 1280 mg/kg lithium (Li10 to Li1280), and then microbial biomass assay and bacterial 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis were conducted to investigate the influences of lithium on soil microbial biomass, bacterial community structure and diversity, and predicted function potential. The results showed that lithium generally decreased microbial biomass carbon and the count of culturable microbe colony, reflecting the reduction in microbial biomass. However, microbial biomass nitrogen increased. Meanwhile, lithium altered bacterial community composition, structure, and dominance. The abundance of phylum such as Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria respectively increased and reduced under lithium stress, while genus such as Adhaeribacter dominated in control group to Li320, and genus such as Lysobacter dominated in Li640, Li960, and Li1280. Then, higher lithium treatments consistently inhibited the bacterial richness, evenness, and diversity, and caused community dissimilarity between groups and significant down-regulation of predicted pathways. Finally, the LEfSe cladogram distinguished several indicator bacteria for different lithium levels. Overall, the influences of lithium on soil microbial community depended on its content, and microbial biomass and richness were sensitive to lower lithium, while higher lithium varied bacterial community and predicted function potential more significantly. This study will provide microbial insights into understanding lithium contamination.
Effects of lithium on growth, maturation, reproduction and gene expression in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Abstract:Lithium (Li) has been widely used to treat bipolar disorder, and industrial use of Li has been increasing; thus, environmental pollution and ecological impacts of Li have become a concern. This study was conducted to clarify the potential biological effects of LiCl and Li(2)CO(3) on a nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system for evaluating soil contaminated with Li. Exposure of C. elegans to LiCl and Li(2)CO(3) decreased growth/maturation and reproduction. The lowest observed effect concentrations for growth, maturation and reproduction were 1250, 313 and 10 000 µm, respectively, for LiCl and 750, 750 and 3000 µm, respectively, for Li(2)CO(3). We also investigated the physiological function of LiCl and LiCO(3) in C. elegans using DNA microarray analysis as an eco-toxicogenomic approach. Among approximately 300 unique genes, including metabolic genes, the exposure to 78 µm LiCl downregulated the expression of 36 cytochrome P450, 16 ABC transporter, 10 glutathione S-transferase, 16 lipid metabolism and two vitellogenin genes. On the other hand, exposure to 375 µm Li(2)CO(3) downregulated the expression of 11 cytochrome P450, 13 ABC transporter, 13 lipid metabolism and one vitellogenin genes. No gene was upregulated by LiCl or Li(2)CO(3). These results suggest that LiCl and Li(2)CO(3) potentially affect the biological and physiological function in C. elegans associated with alteration of the gene expression such as metabolic genes. Our data also provide experimental support for the utility of toxicogenomics by integrating gene expression profiling into a toxicological study of an environmentally important organism such as C. elegans.
Impacts of changes in intestinal flora on the metabolism of Sprague-Dawley rats

Abstract:Changes in intestinal flora affect the health and cause metabolic diseases of the host. The extent to which the impact of different changes in intestinal flora would have on the metabolism of an individual has not been reported. This study aims to investigate the effect of different changes in intestinal flora on the metabolism of Sprague-Dawley (SD) normal rats' individuals. Forty-eight SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (8 rats per group), which were treated with normal saline, probiotics, nonpathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, gentamicin, and magnesium sulfate, respectively. After 7 days, the ileum of each group of rats was collected and real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to analyze the composition of intestinal flora. And gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to analyze plasma metabolic profile. The results revealed that the decrease in alanine content in the probiotics group was statistically significant, while the alanine content in the nonpathogenic Escherichia group increased significantly. Alanine, leucine, isoleucine, and serine decreased significantly in the Salmonella group. Proline and butyric acid decreased significantly in the gentamicin group. The principal component analysis showed significant differences in the Salmonella group compared with other test groups. Overall, the most significant metabolic changes were observed in SD rats in the Salmonella group, while a great similarity was observed in the probiotics, Escherichia group, and gentamicin groups compared with the normal group. Changes in intestinal flora had a certain impact on the metabolism in SD rats, especially on amino acid levels.

Abstract:A drug that is widely used in the treatment of psychiatric disorder is lithium (Li) salts. The people who make therapeutic use of this drug develop a series of side effects. Through metataxonomic data, this study assessed the impacts of lithium, as Li carbonate or Li-enriched mushrooms, on the microbial composition of the ileum, colon, and feces of piglets. Employing Bray–Curtis metric, no differences were observed among the treatments evaluated. Nevertheless, the alpha diversity indices showed differences in the Simpson, Shannon, and Chao-1 indices in the colon and Chao-1 in the feces in the diets with Li compared with the diets without Li. The taxa with the highest relative abundance varied among the ileum, colon, and feces, with a predominance of the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Proteobacteria in diets with Li. Many groups of microorganisms that are important for the health of the host (e.g., Lactobacillus , Ruminococcaceae, Enterorhabdus , Muribaculaceae, and Coprococcus ) had their relative abundance increased in animals that received diets with the recommended dose of lithium. Furthermore, there was an increase in the abundance of Prevotellaceae and Bacteroidales (in the diet with Li-enriched mushroom) and Clostridia , Ruminococcus, Burkholderia, and Bacteroidales (diets with Li carbonate) at the recommended dosages. This is the first study to show the effects of Li carbonate and Li-enriched mushrooms on the intestinal microbiota of piglets. Thus, the effects of lithium on the body may be related to its ability to change the composition of the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract:The host microbiome plays an important role in regulating physiology through microbiota-derived metabolites during host-microbiome interactions. However, molecular mechanism underly host-microbiome interactions remains to be explored. In this study, we used Drosophila as the model to investigate the influence of microbiome and microbiota-derived metabolite sodium butyrate on host transcriptome and metabolome. We established both a sterile Drosophila model and a conventional Drosophila model to demonstrate the role of sodium butyrate. Using multi-omics analysis, we found that microbiome and sodium butyrate could impact host gene expression patterns in both the sterile Drosophila model and the conventional Drosophila model. The analysis of gut microbial using 16S rRNA sequencing showed sodium butyrate treatment also influenced Drosophila bacterial structures. In addition, Drosophila metabolites identified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-MS/MS were shown to be affected by sodium butyrate treatment with lipids as the dominant changed components. Our integrative analysis of the transcriptome, the microbiome, and the metabolome data identified candidate transcripts that are coregulated by sodium butyrate. Taken together, our results reveal the impact of the microbiome and microbiota-derived sodium butyrate on host transcriptome and metabolome, and our work provides a better understanding of host-microbiome interactions at the molecular level with multi-omics data.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Borna disease virus (BDV) causes acute and persistent infections in various vertebrates. During recent years, BDV-specific serum antibodies, BDV antigen, and BDV-specific nucleic acid were found in humans suffering from psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, viral antigen was detected in human autopsy brain tissue by immunohistochemical staining. Whether BDV infection can be associated with psychiatric disorders is still a matter of debate; no direct evidence has ever been presented. In the present study we report on (i) the detection of BDV-specific nucleic acid in human granulocyte cell fraction from three different psychiatric patients and (ii) the isolation of infectious BDV from these cells obtained from a patient with multiple psychiatric disorders. In leukocyte preparations other than granulocytes, either no BDV RNA was detected or positive PCR results were obtained only if there was at least 20% contamination with granulocytes. Parts of the antigenome of the isolated virus were sequenced, demonstrating the close relationship to the prototype BDV strains (He/80 and strain V) as well as to other human virus sequences. Our data provide strong evidence that cells in the granulocyte fraction represent the major if not the sole cell type harboring BDV-specific nucleic acid in human blood and contain infectious virus. In contrast to most other reports of putative human isolates, where sequences are virtually identical to those of the established laboratory strains, this isolate shows divergence in the region previously defined as variable in BDV from naturally infected animals.
Salt concentration in substrate modulates the composition of bacterial and yeast microbiomes of Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract:Aim: Microbiomes influence the physiology and behavior of multicellular organisms and contribute to their adaptation to changing environmental conditions. However, yeast and bacterial microbiota have usually been studied separately; therefore, the interaction between bacterial and yeast communities in the gut of Drosophila melanogaster (D. melanogaster) is often overlooked. In this study, we investigate the correlation between bacterial and yeast communities in the gut of D. melanogaster. Methods: We studied the shifts in the joint microbiome of Drosophila melanogaster, encompassing both yeasts and bacteria, during adaptation to substrate with varying salt concentrations (0%, 2%, 4%, and 7%) using plating for both yeasts and bacteria and NGS-sequencing of variable 16S rRNA gene regions for bacteria. Results: The microbiome of flies and their substrates was gradually altered at moderate NaCl concentrations (2% and 4% compared with the 0% control) and completely transformed at high salt concentrations (7%). The relative abundance of Acetobacter, potentially beneficial to D. melanogaster, decreased as NaCl concentration increased, whereas the relative abundance of the more halotolerant lactobacilli first increased, peaking at 4% NaCl, and then declined dramatically at 7%. At this salinity level, potentially pathogenic bacteria of the genera Leuconostoc and Providencia were dominant. The yeast microbiome of D. melanogaster also undergoes significant changes with an increase in salt concentration in the substrate. The total yeast abundance undergoes nonlinear changes: it is lowest at 0% salt concentration and highest at 2%-4%. At a 7% concentration, the yeast abundance in flies and their substrate is lower than at 2%-4% but significantly higher than at 0%. Conclusions: The abundance and diversity of bacteria that are potentially beneficial to the flies decreased, while the proportion of potential pathogens, Leuconostoc and Providencia, increased with an increase in salt concentration in the substrate. In samples with a relatively high abundance and/or diversity of yeasts, the corresponding indicators for bacteria were often lowered, and vice versa. This may be due to the greater halotolerance of yeasts compared to bacteria and may also indicate antagonism between these groups of microorganisms.

Abstract:The demand of lithium (Li) has increased rapidly in recent decades under carbon neutrality strategies, but the environmental fate and potential risks of Li in aquatic ecosystem are barely known. This study conducted a comprehensive field survey in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and the adjacent East China Sea (ECS), to investigate the spatial distribution of dissolved Li and bioaccumulation of Li in the coastal food web. The dissolved Li increased with salinity (from 7.39 to 189 μg L −1 ), controlled by the conservative mixing of Li-enriched seawater and Li-poor riverine water. Negative correlation was observed between Li content and stable nitrogen isotope in the coastal biota, indicating bio-diminish of Li in the food web. Furthermore, the Li contents in muscle tissues were significantly higher in bivalves (as filter-feeders; mean: 0.75 ± 0.41 μg g −1 ) than in fish (as predator; mean: 0.10 ± 0.05 μg g −1 ) and other biota species, indicating that dissolved uptake might be the major exposure pathway for Li. Importantly, it was noticed that the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) in fish muscle varied greatly (from 0.17 to 5.82), showing lower BAFs for fish inhabiting in marine and benthic regions (with higher salinity and higher dissolved Li concentration). Such inhibition effects of salinity on Li bioaccumulation could not be explained by the modulation of salinity on Li speciation, but highly attributed to the inhibition of high salinity on the dissolved uptake of Li, which was associated with the co-transportation of Li and Na. Our results illuminate the importance of salinity on regulation the spatial variations of dissolved Li and Li bioaccumulation in the YRE and the adjacent ECS, which could help the understanding of Li biogeochemical cycling and potential risks in estuarine and coastal regions.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) has been widely used in clinical therapy and new Li-ion battery industry. To date, the impact of Li on the development of immune cells is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of Li on hematopoiesis. C57BL/6 (B6) mice were treated with 50 ppm LiCl, 200 ppm LiCl, or the control via drinking water for 3 months, and thereafter the hematopoiesis was evaluated. Treatment with Li increased the number of mature lymphoid cells while suppressing the number of mature myeloid cells in mice. In addition, a direct action of Li on hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) suppressed endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress to reduce the proliferation of HSC in the bone marrow (BM), thus leading to fewer HSC in mice. On the other hand, the suppression of ER stress by Li exposure increased the expression of Hsp90, which promoted the potential of lymphopoiesis but did not impact that for myelopoiesis in HSC in the BM of mice. Moreover, in vitro treatment with Li also likely disturbed the ER stress-Hsp90 signaling, suppressed the proliferation, and increased the potential for lymphopoiesis in human HSC. Our study reveals a previously unrecognized toxicity of Li on HSC and may advance our understanding for the immunotoxicology of Li.
Lithium in the Environment and its Effects on Higher Plants

Abstract:Summary Lithium (Li) is present in low concentrations in all parts of the biosphere, including living organisms. It reaches the terrestrial environment primarily through natural processes to which parent substrate was subjected during pedogenesis, and due to anthropogenic activities. Individual soil types differ regarding Li content; for example saline and loamy soils have higher Li content. It is found in low concentrations primarily in ionic form in aquatic environments in surface and groundwater. It is mobile in the soil and thus soil contamination with Li can lead to its higher concentration in groundwater. In the environment, Li reaches the atmosphere from Li-emitting sources. It is widely used in many industries, lately in the Li-ion batteries in electronic goods, due to which it may be a potential risk for the environment. Terrestrial plants take up Li largely via roots from the soil, but also via shoots from the atmosphere. In the soil, Li is mostly bound by clay fraction and organic matter. During the uptake, transport and distribution in plants it behaves like an alkaline earth ion, not like an alkali ion. The fact that Li is immobile in the phloem supports this claim. Its ascendent transport mainly depends upon the transpiration intensity. More Li is taken up by plants from acid soils than from alkaline soils. Li is non-essential for plant growth and development. In low concentrations it can be stimulative and affect chemical composition and organic production of plants. Li plays an important role in the metabolism of halophyte species. It is increasingly regarded as an essential trace element for animals and humans, and used in human medication to treat dementia, suicidal ideation, aggression and violence. High levels of Li are toxic to all plants, but uptake and sensitivity to Li are species-dependent. Some representatives of the Ranunculaceae, Solanaceae and Asteraceae families are characterized by increased Li accumulation, while Poaceae, Liliaceae, Brassicaceae, Caprifoliaceae show low accumulation. High concentrations of Li have adverse effects on many physiological and biochemical processes in plants (DNA, RNA and protein pathways, water relations, content of photosynthetic pigments, photosynthesis, production of reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation of the cell membranes etc.), which is further manifested as stunted growth, developmental disorder, visual symptoms, interveinal necrosis and necrosis along the leaf margins. Hyperaccumulator plants extract significant amounts of Li and are therefore used in phytoremediation. Better understanding of the effects of beneficial and phytotoxic concentrations of Li on metabolism and plant growth and development remains vital for the improvement of the knowledge about biological activity of Li in higher plants.
Lithium disturbs homeostasis of essential microelements in erythrocytes of rats: Selenium as a protective agent?

Abstract:BackgroundSelenium is an essential element which shows protective properties against diverse harmful factors. Lithium compounds are widely used in medicine, but, in spite of undoubted beneficial effects, treatment with these compounds may lead to severe side effects, including renal, gastrointestinal, neurological, endocrine and metabolic disorders. This study was aimed at evaluating the influence of selenium and/or lithium on lithium, iron, zinc and copper content in rats’ erythrocytes as well as estimate the action of additional selenium on lithium exposure effects.MethodsThe experiment was performed on four groups of rats (six animals each): control — received saline; Li — received 2.7 mg Li/kg b.w. as lithium carbonate; Se — received 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w. as sodium selenite; Se + Li — received simultaneously 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w. and 2.7 mg Li/kg b.w. (sodium selenite and lithium carbonate). The administration was performed for three weeks, once a day by stomach tube, in form of water solutions. In erythrocytes the content of lithium, iron, zinc and copper was determined using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy.ResultsLithium treatment insignificantly disturbed iron and zinc homeostasis as well as markedly increased lithium accumulation and copper content in rat erythrocytes. Selenium coadministration reversed those effects.ConclusionsThe beneficial effect of selenium on disturbances of studied microelements homeostasis as well as on preventing lithium accumulation in erythrocytes in Li receiving animals allows suggesting that further research on selenium application as an adjuvant in lithium therapy is worth carrying on.

Influences of Lithium on Soil Properties and Enzyme Activities

Abstract:Lithium is an emerging environmental contaminant under the current sustainable energy strategy, but little is known about its contamination characteristic in soil. In this study, soil properties and enzyme activities in soils treated with 10-1280 mg kg(-1) lithium were measured. The results showed that the content of ammonium ni-trogen, total nitrogen, and exchangeable potassium significantly increased by 64.39%-217.73%, 23.06%-131.86%, and 4.76%-16.10%, while electric conductivity and available phosphorus content in lithium treated soils was respectively as 1.10-fold-13.44-fold and 1.27-fold-6.66-fold comparing to CK value. Soil pH and cation exchange capacity slightly declined and increased, respectively, and there was no significant variation in total organic carbon. However, nitrate nitrogen and sulfate content significantly decreased under higher lithium stress. On the other hand, lower lithium treatment level of 10, 20, 40, or 80 mg kg(-1) selectively promoted the activities of sucrase, urease, aryl sulfatase, and peroxidase, while the protease, neutral phosphatase, phytase, and lipase were significantly inhibited under all lithium levels, indicating a weaken geochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Then, lithium's 10% and 50% ecological dose (ED10 and ED50) was respec-tively fitted as 21.18 and 1408.67 mg kg(-1) basing on Geometric Mean Index. The influences of lithium on soil were adverse. This study provided important insights into understanding the characteristics of lithium contamination, informing risk assessment and guiding remediation.
Ecotoxicological Effects of Soil Lithium on Earthworm Eisenia Fetida: Lethality, Bioaccumulation, Biomarker Responses, and Histopathological Changes.

Abstract:Lithium is an emerging environmental contaminant in the current low-carbon economy, but little is known about its influences on soil invertebrates. In this work, earthworm Eisenia fetida was exposed to soils treated with different levels of lithium for 7 d, and multiple ecotoxicological parameters were evaluated. The results showed that mortality was dose-dependent and lithium's median lethal content (LC50) to earthworm was respectively 865.08, 361.01, 139.36, and 94.95 mg/kg after 1 d, 2 d, 4 d, and 7 d exposure. The bioaccumulation factor based on measured exogenous lithium content (BFexog) respectively reached 0.79, 1.01, 1.57, and 1.27 with the increasing lithium levels, suggesting that lithium accumulation was averagely 1.16-fold to the exogenous content, and 74.42%∼81.19%, 14.54%∼18.23%, and 2.26%∼8.02% of the lithium in exposed earthworms were respectively retained in the cytosol, debris, and granule. Then, lithium stress stimulated the activity of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, acetylcholinesterase, and glutathione S-transferase as well as the content of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine and metallothionein, indicating the generation of oxidative damage, while the content of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde decreased. Finally, lithium introduced histopathological changes, including the degenerated seminal vesicle and muscle hyperplasia, as well as high or extreme nuclear DNA damage. This study confirmed the obvious bioaccumulation and toxic effects caused by soil lithium via ecotoxicological data, providing new theoretical insights into understanding the ecological risks of lithium to soil invertebrates.

Abstract:Iron is a common and essential element for maintaining life in bacteria, plants and animals and is found in soil, fresh waters and marine waters; however, over exposure is toxic to organisms. Iron is used in electron transport complexes within mitochondria as well as a co-factor in many essential proteins. It is also established that iron accumulation in the central nervous system in mammals is associated with various neurological disorders. Ample studies have investigated the long-term effects of iron overload in the nervous system. However, its acute effects in nervous tissue and additional organ systems warrant further studies. This study investigates the effects of iron overload on development, behavior, survival, cardiac function, and glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the Drosophila melanogaster. Additionally, physiological responses in crayfish were examined following Fe3+ exposure. Fe3+ reduced neuronal excitability in proprioceptive neurons in a crayfish model. Thus, Fe3+ may block stretch activated channels (SACs) as well as voltage-gated Na+ channels. Exposure also rapidly reduces synaptic transmission but does not block ionotropic glutamatergic receptors, suggesting a blockage of pre-synaptic voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in both crustacean and Drosophila models. The effects are partly reversible with acute exposure, indicating the cells are not rapidly damaged. This study is relevant in demonstrating the effects of Fe3+ on various physiological functions in different organisms in order to further understand the acute and long-term consequences of overload.
