Abstract:Reusing reclaimed water through drip irrigation offers an effective way to overcome freshwater scarcity. However, biofilm accumulation in the flow channel of drip emitters is the primary obstacle. So far, biofilm development in the emitters remains largely unknown. Here, industrial computed tomography was used to quantify the emitter biofilm developments. Results showed that biofilm typically accumulated in the inlet of the emitter flow channel and decreased toward the flow direction. Biofilm was also typically accumulated in dead areas having low flow velocities, such as edge, corner, and adjacent surface zones in flow channels. The dynamics of the emitter biofilm variation mechanisms were also elucidated. Specifically, particle and nutrient transport appeared to be dominant in shaping the initial biofilm formation (i.e., 5% emitter clogging degree), resulting in biofilm abundant in the inlet of the flow channel. However, it changed the hydraulic conditions in emitter flow channels, increased local water shear stress, which made the biofilm easier to be washed away in the inlet, and caused biofilm to grow faster in the middle and outlet regions of the flow channel at 20% emitter clogging degree. At 50% clogging degree, biofilm in inlet regions grew faster again. Finally, some biofilm control approaches such as water quality management and emitter flow channel structure optimization were proposed. This study provided a better understanding of biofilm formation mechanisms in the emitter flow channels, which is critical for designing appropriate biofilm control technologies and will facilitate the reuse of reclaimed water in agricultural irrigation.

Abstract:Drip irrigation is the most effective and reliable method for reclaimed wastewater irrigation. Emitter clogging is the major problem for extending the drip irrigation technology. The existence of suspended particulates in irrigation water is the main reason for the emitter clogging. However, the reclaimed wastewater quality is extremely complex, and there is a series of physical, chemical, and biological reactions between suspended particulates and other materials contained such as microorganisms, which make the characteristics of suspended particulates in reclaimed wastewater complicated. In this paper, two types of widely used wastewaters treated with fluidized-bed reactor (FBR) and biological aerated filter (BAF) processes respectively were selected. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) technology and fractal theory were used to quantitatively describe the characteristics of the surface topography of suspended particulates. The results showed that the suspended particulates in two reclaimed wastewater were flocculent and porous. The pore system mainly consisted of solid suspended particulates, and most areas between the particulates were filled with microbes and extracellular polymers (EPS). The complex structure of biofilms was formed. That the biofilms grew and detached in irrigation system and deposited continuously at the inlet and outlet of labyrinth path was the major reason for the emitter clogging. The surface topography of suspended particulates in both reclaimed wastewaters showed fractal and multifractal characteristics, and the fractal dimension could not characterize the local and microsingularity of particulates but multifractal dimension could. The uniformity of the distribution of sediment pores increased with the size. Comparatively, the uniformity of suspended particulates in reclaimed wastewater treated by FBR was lower. With operation of reclaimed wastewater irrigation system, the average discharge of emitters decreased continuously with obvious fluctuations. The clogging degree of emitters was low during the first 256 h, and the clogging degree of the two types of reclaimed water was similar. But then, the degree of clogging increased greatly, and the FBR treatment on the emitters discharge were more obvious than BAF. It was closely related to the growth, detachments and sediment of biofilms in the irrigation system. Hence, using the reclaimed wastewater treated by BAF for drip irrigation is more suitable.

Abstract:Biofilm growth in drinking water distribution systems was studied in an annular reactor system which was designed to model the hydraulic conditions in water mains. Experiments were performed with chlorine-free water as well as with different disinfectant (chlorine or chloramine) residuals and different AOC concentrations added to the reactor influent to examine the effect of disinfectant residuals and AOC concentrations on biofilm accumulation and planktonic cell numbers. The dynamic parameters of bacteria growth were calculated in water with different disinfectant (chlorine or chloramine) and the results indicated that monochloramine may be more effective than free chlorine for control of biofilm accumulation.

Abstract:Having drinking water is one of the sustainable development goals (SDG no. 6) that is not always easy to ensure, especially in countries like Spain or arid regions marked by water deficit. The reuse of treated water should be considered when planning water resources, but it is necessary to conduct experiments to verify that this effectiveness is applicable to real situations. Our field trial was carried out in several study areas distributed in agricultural parcels of SE Spain. Three olive grove and vineyard plantations were monitored for 3 years. Two irrigation water types were considered: freshwater from conventional wells (controls) and treated wastewater (TW). The treated wastewater came from three different wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) that employ a biological secondary treatment without disinfection and different numbers of Inhabitants Equivalent (IE) as a measure of pollutant load. They were located in Valdeganga (3,000 IE), Fuente&#225;lamo (5,600 IE) and Ontur (1,500 IE). All the study plots were watered by drip irrigation using 16 mm-diameter polyethylene pipelines.Several soil and water parameters were analysed to determine the main differences among them. Increasing of soil salinity is a real risk after irrigating with wastewater as is reflected in higher electrical conductivity values. However, this fact was compensated by the greater contribution of organic matter and nutrients, which allowed crops to adequately develop. Moreover, no microbiological, metal content, toxicity or organic compounds in the studied water samples were detected and reclaimed municipal wastewater was comparable in quality to the conventional sources at all the demonstration sites. Hence adopting this water type for irrigation for grapes and olives could help save primary water resources. The future of water resources management policies involves sustainable wastewater reuse within a circular economy frame because this is the only way to guarantee everyone solidarity access to water.Fundings provided by the ERA-NET WaterWorks2014 Cofunded Call. Abstract:A recent innovation in air phytoremediation is active green walls, which utilises biofiltration technology with airflow from mechanical ventilation. While this novel technology is gaining traction, the influence of irrigation on soil moisture, and subsequently the microbial communities that play a role in air filtration is untested. In this study, the application of drip irrigation techniques in active green walls were investigated for their influence on system performance. A modular green wall system was tested, with tests across 7 different plant species, as well as a substrate only control. Water distribution across the modules, the water-carrying capacity and airflow through the substrate were measured. The microbial community present, which is critical to the phytoremediation process, was quantified by identifying individual microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) within the substrate. Results demonstrated that the lower-speed drip irrigation reduced water consumption compared to the rapid system, and had generally more uniform moisture distribution. High flow drip irrigation resulted in a water pathway phenomenon, leading to uneven moisture distribution within the green wall, and this effect was accentuated with fibrous root plant species. Drip irrigation did not change microbial community composition across planted modules, apart from increasing fungi by 6%, but did wash out bacteria at the high flow rate used (−56.67%), thus low flow rate irrigation rate is more beneficial for both plant growth and microbial community composition. The current work provides evidence that drip irrigation has considerable effects on both substrate airflow rate and substrate microbial density: both key to system air cleaning performance.

Abstract:Biofilms within drinking water distribution systems serve as a habitat for drinking water microorganisms. However, biofilms can negatively impact drinking water quality by causing water discoloration and deterioration and can be a reservoir for unwanted microorganisms. In this study, we investigated whether indicator organisms for drinking water quality, such as coliforms, can settle in mature drinking water biofilms. Therefore, a biofilm monitor consisting of glass rings was used to grow and sample drinking water biofilms. Two mature drinking water biofilms were characterized by flow cytometry, ATP measurements, confocal laser scanning microscopy and 16S rRNA sequencing. Biofilms developed under treated chlorinated surface water supply exhibited lower cell densities in comparison with biofilms resulting from treated groundwater. Overall, the phenotypic as well as the genotypic characteristics were significantly different between both biofilms. In addition, the response of the biofilm microbiome and possible biofilm detachment after minor water quality changes were investigated. Limited changes in pH and free chlorine addition, to simulate operational changes that are relevant for practice, were evaluated. It was shown that both biofilms remained resilient. Finally, mature biofilms were prone to invasion of the coliform, . After spiking low concentrations (i.e. ± 100 cells/100 mL) of the coliform to the corresponding bulk water samples, the coliforms were able to attach and get established within the mature biofilms. These outcomes are emphasizing the need for continued research on biofilm detachment and its implications for water contamination in distribution networks.

Niche Differentiation of Biofilm Microorganisms in a Full-scale Municipal Drinking Water Distribution System in China and Their Implication for Biofilm Control

Abstract:Biofilms on the inner surface of a drinking water distribution system (DWDS) affect water quality and stability. Understanding the niche differentiation of biofilm microbial communities is necessary for the efficient control of DWDS biofilms. However, biofilm studies are difficult to conduct in the actual DWDS because of inaccessibility to the pipes buried underground. Taking the opportunity of infrastructure construction and relevant pipeline replacement in China, biofilms in a DWDS (a water main and its branch pipes) were collected in situ, followed by analysis on the abundances and community structures of bacterial and archaeal using quantitative PCR and high-throughput sequencing, respectively. Results showed that archaea were detected only in the biofilms of the water main, with a range of 9.4×103~1.1×105 copies/cm2. By contrast, bacteria were detected in the biofilms of branch pipes and the distal part of the water main, with a range of 8.8×103~9.6×106 copies/cm2. Among the biofilm samples, the archaeal community in the central part of the water main showed the highest richness and diversity. Nitrosopumilus was found to be predominant (86.22%) in the biofilms of the proximal part of the water main. However, Methanobrevibacter (87.15%) predominated in the distal part of the water main. The bacterial community of the water main and branch pipes was primarily composed of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria at the phylum level, respectively. Regardless of archaea or bacteria, only few operational taxonomic units (OTUs) (<0.5% of total OTUs) were shared by all the biofilms, indicating the niche differentiation of biofilm microorganisms. Moreover, the high Mn content in the biofilms of the distal sampling location (D3) in the water main was linked to the predominance of Bacillus. Functional gene prediction revealed that the proportion of infectious disease-related genes was 0.44-0.67% in the tested biofilms. Furthermore, functional genes related to the resistance of the bacterial community to disinfections and antibiotics were detected in all the samples, that is, glutathione metabolism-relating genes (0.14-0.65%) and beta-lactam resistance gene (0.01-0.05%). The results of this study indicate the ubiquity of archaea and bacteria in the biofilms of water main and branch pipes, respectively, and pipe diameters could be a major influencing factor on bacterial community structure. In the water main, the key finding was the predominant existence of archaea, particularly Nitrosopumilus and methanogen. Hence, their routine monitoring and probable influences on water quality in pipelines with large diameter should be given more attention. Besides, since Mn-related Bacillus and suspected pathogenic Enterococcus were detected in the biofilm, supplementation of disinfectant may be a feasible strategy for inhibiting their growth and ensuring water quality. In addition, the monitoring on their abundance variation could help to determine the frequency and methods of pipeline maintenance.
Microbial stratification and DOM removal in drinking water biofilters: Implications for enhanced performance

Abstract:Biofiltration is a low-cost, low-energy technology that employs a biologically activated bed of porous medium to reduce the biodegradable fraction of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool in source water, resulting in the production of drinking water. Microbial communities at different bed depths within the biofilter play crucial roles in the degradation and removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultimately impacting its performance. However, the relationships between the composition of microbial communities inhabiting different biofilter depths and their utilisation of various DOC fractions remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted an experimental study where microbial communities from the upper (i.e., top 10 cm) and lower (i.e., bottom 10 cm) sections of a 30-cm long laboratory-scale biofilter were recovered. These communities were then individually incubated for 10 days using the same source water as the biofilter influent. Our study revealed that the bottom microbial community exhibited lower diversity yet had a co-occurrence network with a higher degree of interconnections among its members compared to the top microbial community. Moreover, we established a direct correlation between the composition and network structure of the microbial communities and their ability to utilise various DOM compounds within a DOM pool. Interestingly, although the bottom microbial community had only 20 % of the total cell abundance compared to the top community at the beginning of the incubation, it utilised and hence removed approximately 60 % more total DOC from the DOM pool than the top community. While both communities rapidly utilised labile carbon fractions, such as low-molecular-weight neutrals, the utilisation of more refractory carbon fractions, like high-molecular-weight humic substances with an average molecular weight of more than ca. 1451 g/mol, was exclusive to the bottom microbial community. By employing techniques that capture microbial diversity (i.e., flow cytometry and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing) and considering the complexities of DOM (i.e., LCOCD), our study provides novel insights into how microbial community structure could influence the microbial-mediated processes of engineering significance in drinking water production. Finally, our findings could offer the opportunity to improve biofilter performances via engineering interventions that shape the compositions of biofilter microbial communities and enhance their utilisation and removal of DOM, most notably the more classically humified and refractory DOM compound groups.
Impact of hydrodynamics on clay particle deposition and biofilm development in a labyrinth-channel dripper

Abstract:To better understand the physical and biological clogging in drip-irrigation, a study was conducted on the impacts of hydrodynamic conditions on clay particle deposition and biofilm development in drippers using an optical method. A transparent milli-fluidic system composed of labyrinth channels was used to identify areas most susceptible to particle clogging using two different types of clay suspensions: sodium bentonite and kaolin. The impact of salt addition [(NaCl) = 200 mg L− 1] on the clay deposition was also analyzed. Biofilm development was studied using the same methodology using a nutritive solution (chemical oxygen demand, COD = 200 mg L−1). In addition, fluid dynamics simulations were performed along the labyrinth channel to understand the effect of flow behaviour on the fouling. Computational fluid dynamics results show two types of flow topology: high velocity in the main flow (around 1 m s− 1) and low velocity in the vortex zones (less than 0.2 m s− 1) found in the channel corners. Using an optical method, kaolin deposition and biofilm growth in the dripper were observed to occur mainly in the inlet channel and initial vortex zones, which are characterized by lower mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy values. This part of the dripper can be considered as a bottleneck that amplifies the fouling phenomena and which should be optimized. With the addition of NaCl, kaolin particles tend to form bigger flocs. Therefore, more significant particle deposition is observed, but this is not the case of bentonite for which no fouling is observed along the dripper.

Abstract:Biofilm formation in long-distance water conveyance pipelines poses significant risks to water quality, particularly under varying nutrient levels and heavy metal stress. However, the impacts of pipeline material on biofilm formation dynamics under different raw water conditions remain elusive. This study investigated the effects of nutrient availability and Fe-Mn stress on biofilm development, structural stability, bacterial community composition, and the occurrence of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) bacteria. Using reactors with different nutrient conditions, we observed that increased nutrient levels promote biofilm growth but lead to greater instability, heightening the risk of secondary contamination. Notably, nutrient escalation beyond a critical threshold had a diminishing impact on biofilm community composition. Additionally, Fe-Mn stress, while initially enhancing microbial adhesion and metabolic activity, ultimately inhibited biofilm formation over time and increases the prevalence of VBNC bacteria, particularly on stainless steel (SS) surfaces. Our findings also highlighted the importance of material selection for pipelines, with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) showing reduced biofilm formation compared to SS, making it a more suitable option for transporting raw water in environments with high metal content. Dispersal limitation determined the bacterial community assembly during the biofilm formation, accounting for 64.53-90.67 % of the variability in different scenarios. These insights offer valuable guidance for managing biofilm-related issues in water distribution systems, emphasizing the need for careful control of nutrient levels and material choice to ensure water safety over long distances.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment using biofilm technology with sustainable carriers contributes towards the circular bioeconomy. The use of renewable biological materials and wastes as novel biofilm supports promotes material valorisation and reusability, decreasing the depletion of natural resources and the generation of waste and emissions. This manuscript presents a comprehensive review of the sustainable bacterial biofilm carriers used in biological wastewater rehabilitation. They include organic and inorganic materials from natural sources such as clays, volcanic rocks, stones, bamboo and luffa fibers and waste-based materials as wood husk, coconut husk, corncob, waste tire rubber, cigarette filter rods, textile wastes, among others. The material characteristics and application performance as sustainable bacterial biofilm carrier to remove several toxic pollutants and nutrients typically found in domestic or industrial effluents, in batch experiments and biofilm reactors were analyzed. Cell attachment and biofilm formation mechanisms are discussed. Processing approaches and surface modifications of the referred materials are presented. The review emphasizes the economic and environmental benefits of sustainable carriers compared to traditional ones. This survey is in tune with the need to explore materials that are included within the principles of circular economy, allowing the application of a more environment friendly and cost-effective water treatment.

Abstract:Bacterial biofilms that grow in porous media are critical to ecosystem processes and applications ranging from soil bioremediation to bioreactors for treating wastewater or producing value-added products. However, understanding and engineering the complex phenomena that drive the development of biofilms in such systems remains a challenge. Here we present a novel micromodel technology to explore bacterial biofilm development in porous media flows. The technology consists of a set of modules that can be combined as required for any given experiment and conveniently tuned for specific requirements. The core module is a 3D-printed micromodel where biofilm is grown into a perfusable porous substrate. High-precision additive manufacturing, in particular stereolithography, is used to fabricate porous scaffolds with precisely controlled architectures integrating flow channels with diameters down to several hundreds of micrometers. The system is instrumented with: ultraviolet-C light-emitting diodes; on-line measurements of oxygen consumption and pressure drop across the porous medium; camera and spectrophotometric cells for the detection of biofilm detachment events at the outlet. We demonstrate how this technology can be used to study the development of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm for several days within a network of flow channels. We find complex dynamics whereby oxygen consumption reaches a steady-state but not the pressure drop, which instead features a permanent regime with large fluctuations. We further use X-ray computed microtomography to image the spatial distribution of biofilms and computational fluid dynamics to link biofilm development with local flow properties. By combining the advantages of additive manufacturing for the creation of reproducible 3D porous microarchitectures with the flow control and instrumentation accuracy of microfluidics, our system provides a platform to study the dynamics of biofilm development in 3D porous media and to rapidly test new concepts in process engineering.
Transition of fouling characteristics after development of membrane wetting in membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs)

Abstract:The practical applications of water treatment techniques based on hydrophobic aeration membrane are limited due to membrane pores blocking. Various studies have revealed that both biofilm and microbial secretion can exacerbate membrane fouling. Recently, we constructed a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) system for treating micro-polluted surface water in order to identify the primary cause for oxygen transfer rate (OTR) decline. It was found that microbial secretion had a more prominent negative effect than that caused by biofilm, as manifested by the fact the effect of microbial secretion (66.49%) was greater than the resistance of biofilm (38.83%). Fouling decreased the total pore volume of all membrane. The peak location of adsorption capacity was more likely to occur at smaller pore sizes with longer running time. Notably, continuous fluorescence distribution between the separating layer and pores like finger in MABR system exhibited an increasing trend with the operation time, indicating a gradual increase of microbial viability. Core protein structure was revealed by different bond peaks (0–90 d). Specifically, for different organic components of EPS, the hydrophilic HIS was the main content, while the mass transfer resistance caused by the gel increased, which reduced the contact angle and increased the bubble point pressure. Therefore, effects of EPS content and composition should be considered during the application of water treatment techniques based on MABR.

Abstract:Compared to drinking water, the higher bacterial abundance, diversity, and organic matter concentration in reclaimed wastewater suggest that it is more likely to form biofilms. Nevertheless, little is known regarding many important aspects of the biofilm ecology in reclaimed wastewater distribution systems (RWDS), such as the long-term microbial community succession and the underlying driving factors. In the present study, by sampling and analysing microbial compositions of pipe wall biofilms from six frequently used pipe materials under NaClOdisinfection (sodium hypochlorite-treated), NONdisinfection (without disinfection), and UVdisinfection (UV-treated) treatments over one year, it was found that the succession of microbial community structure followed a primary succession pattern. This primary succession pattern was reflected as increases in live cell number and α-diversity, along with metagenic succession in taxonomic composition. Proteobacteria, Nitrospirae, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia comprised the dominant phyla in biofilm samples. Compared to biofilms in the NaClOdisinfection reactor, the bacterial communities of biofilms in NONdisinfection and UVdisinfection reactors were distributed more evenly among different bacterial phyla. Principal component analysis revealed a clear temporal pattern of microbial community structures in six kinds of pipe wall biofilms albeit a difference in microbial community structures among the three reactors. Adonis testing indicated that the microbial community composition variation caused by disinfection methods (R2 = 0.283, P < 0.01) was more pronounced than that from the time variable (R2 = 0.070, P < 0.01) and pipe material (R2 = 0.057, P < 0.01). Significantly positive correlation between average local abundance and occupancy was observed in biofilm communities of the three reactors, suggesting that the 'core-satellite' model could be applied to identify biofilm-preferential species under specific disinfection conditions in RWDS. The prevalence of family Sphingomonadaceae, known to show chlorine tolerance and powerful biofilm-forming ability in NaClOdisinfection reactors, evidenced the habitat filtering consequent to environment pressure. Correlation-based network analysis revealed that taxonomic relatedness such as similar niches, cooperation, taxa overdispersion, and competition all functioned toward driving the bacterial assembly succession in RWDS.

Abstract:Controlling emitter clogging by reducing clogging substances is commonly used nowadays, but it is merely applied in clogged emitters, so establishing a convenient and pre‐treated emitter clogging control strategy is essential. In this paper, four types of non‐pressure‐compensating emitters were selected for a drip irrigation experiment using reclaimed water. Furthermore, suspended particles' components in reclaimed water treated with four technologies were tested, and then their components' relations with emitter clogging substances were studied. The results showed that clogging substances inside emitters and suspended particles both showed the complicated biofilm structure. The mineral components, relative phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) concentrations and dominant microbial communities of clogging substances inside emitters were consistent with those of suspended particles in the same reclaimed water. Mineral components were quartz, alkali‐feldspar and illite (total exceeding 88.0%). The relative PLFA concentrations were 0.7–0.8‰, while the main PLFAs were 12:0, i15:0, 16:0 and 18:0. Moreover, bacteroides, bacillus and cellvibrio were the dominant bacteria. However, solid particles in four types of reclaimed water represented more differences. The mineral components, relative PLFA concentrations and dominance indexes varied by 9.7–29.9, 57.9–253.0 and 2.6–49.0%, respectively. Therefore, an emitter‐clogging control strategy could be established according to suspended particles' components in the same reclaimed water. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Une pratique courante de contrôle du colmatage d'un émetteur consiste à réduire la charge en particules colmatâtes, ce qui implique de recourir à un prétraitement de l'eau. Dans cet article, quatre types d'émetteurs non‐compensés en pression ont été sélectionnés pour une expérience d'irrigation au goutte à goutte à l'aide de l'eau de réutilisation. De plus, nous avons étudié les relations entre la composition des eaux traitées selon quatre technologies, avec la composition des substances trouvées dans les émetteurs. Les résultats montrent que les substances à l'intérieur des émetteurs et sur les particules en suspension ont toutes deux une structure compliquée de biofilms. Les composants minéraux, le ratio d'acides gras phospholipidiques (PLFAs) et les communautés microbiennes dominantes présentes dans les substances à l'intérieur des émetteurs étaient cohérents avec celles des particules en suspension dans l'eau de réutilisation. Les composants minéraux étaient du quartz, du feldspath alcalin et de l'illite (88.0%). Les concentrations relatives PLFAs étaient de 0.7 à 0.8‰, tandis que les concentrations principales PLFAs étaient 12: 0, 15: 0, 16: 0 et 18: 0. En outre, Bacteroides, bacillus et Cellvibrio étaient les bactéries dominantes. Cependant, les particules solides présentes dans les quatre types de l'eau de réutilisation présentaient plus de différences. Les composants minéraux, les concentrations relatives PLFAs et les indices de dominance variaient de 9.7 à 29.9, de 57.9 à 253 et de 2.6 à 49.0%, respectivement. Abstract:The reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural practices is becoming increasingly important due to the growing demand for the transition to a circular economy. It has the major advantage of providing an alternative resource to the conventional water used for agricultural irrigation. The main objective of this work is to study, through tests on experimental installations, the effect of the type of irrigation water on the growth and development of lettuce. The types of irrigation water were prepared from purified wastewater, treated wastewater plus fertilizer, conventional water, and conventional water plus fertilizer. The physicochemical analyzes of wastewater from the Imzouren-Bni Bouayach WWTP resulted in different values of the parameters measured (pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, oxygen below, suspended matter, BOD5, COD, nitrate, nitrite and phosphorus) which fall within the limited range of direct discharges and comply with Moroccan standards for the quality of water intended for irrigation. The results of the characterization of the soil showed that it is a basic soil (pH= 8.5), unsalted (electrical conductivity = 2.43 ms/cm) and poor in organic and nutrient elements (Carbon 0.8%, organic matter 1.46%, nitrogen 0.06 mg/l, phosphorus 10.5 mg/l, potassium 56.4 mg/l.) The main results of the plant analysis show that the production level of this study crop irrigated with conventional water is similar to that of this study crop irrigated with treated wastewater. In other words, irrigation with treated wastewater allows lettuce to guarantee irrigated production at least at the level of conventional water. Another motivated addition of nitrogen, phosphate and potash mineral supplement in the treated wastewater improves the production potential of lettuce.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the combined impact of flow hydrodynamics and pipe material on biofilm development in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). Biofilms were formed on four commonly used pipe materials (namely polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, structured wall high-density polyethylene and solid wall high-density polyethylene) within a series of purpose built flow cell reactors at two different flow regimes. Results indicate that varying amounts of microbial material with different morphologies were present depending on the pipe material and conditioning. The amount of microbial biomass was typically greater for the biofilms conditioned at lower flows. Whereas, biofilm development was inhibited at higher flows indicating shear forces imposed by flow conditions were above the critical levels for biofilm attachment. Alphaproteobacteria was the predominant bacterial group within the biofilms incubated at low flow and represented 48% of evaluated phylotypes; whilst at higher flows, Betaproteobacteria (45%) and Gammaproteobacteria (33%) were the dominant groups. The opportunistic pathogens, Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas were found to be particularly abundant in biofilms incubated at lower flows, and only found within biofilms incubated at higher flows on the rougher materials assessed. This suggests that these bacteria have limited ability to propagate within biofilms under high shear conditions without sufficient protection (roughness). These findings expand on knowledge relating to the impact of surface roughness and flow hydrodynamics on biofilm development within DWDS.GRAPHICAL
