Regional Coral Growth Responses to Seawater Warming in the South China Sea

Abstract:Seawater temperature is one of the main environmental factors controlling coral skeleton growth. Sustained seawater warming is regarded as a major threat to coral growth and reef development Coral reefs are widespread in the South China Sea (SCS), where the history and future of coral growth are of great concern. We integrated 99 linear extension rate series of the coral Porites from 12 locations at three regions in SCS, which include the Hainan Island (HN), the Xisha Islands (XS), and the Huangyan Island-Nansha Islands (HY-NS), and explored the regional responses of coral growth to sustained seawater warming. The sea surface temperature (SST) rose linearly by 0.47 degrees C, 0.71 degrees C, and 0.76 degrees C at HN, XS, and HY-HN, respectively, between 1900 and 2014. During this period, coral growth increased linearly by similar to 21.0% and -0.7% at HN and XS, while HY-NS saw a decline of similar to 2.8% in coral growth. Moreover, interdecadal variations were found for both SST and coral growth. A nonlinear response relationship was revealed between coral growth and SST, with a thermal optimum of similar to 27.5 degrees C for Porites, which is responsible for the regional difference in the long-term trend in coral growth in SCS. In recent decades, reductions in coral growth have occurred in SCS, especially at HN, with the largest fall of similar to 15.1% over the past century, which is attributed mainly to intensifying human impacts instead of seawater warming. A preliminary estimate presents regional-different coral growths in SCS by the end of 21st century, with declines of similar to 8.9-16.3% under the atmospheric CO2 emission scenario (RCP 8.5), implying that the overall downturn of coral growth will be inevitable under the future sustained seawater warming in SCS. Potential Geochemical Evidence of Porites Corals Responding to Coral Bleaching in the 20th Century in the Nansha Islands, Southern South China Sea

Abstract:To better understand the long-term survival of modern coral reefs under global warming, the history of past coral bleaching events prior to modern marine ecological surveys must be investigated. Here, 11 dead Porites and 2 Porites with growth hiatuses growing in the 20th century were collected from the Nansha Islands, southern South China Sea (SCS) for monthly Sr/Ca, δ18O and δ13C analyses to explore the climatic conditions and metabolic information corresponding to these growth structures. Among the 13 episodes, the results showed that 8 mortalities occurred in the summers, coral MJ8 died in spring, and the other 2 mortalities and 2 growth hiatuses occurred in the cooling season. In addition to the dead surface of the coral mortalities, stress bands with significantly reduced growth rates could also be observed in the corals. Negative shifts in δ13C occurred prior to 5 coral mortalities and most stress bands were caused in summer, suggesting a sharp reduction in photosynthesis by decreased symbiotic zooxanthellae or photosynthetic pigments. Overall, the mortalities can be concluded to have occurred in summer and stress bands with abrupt δ13C decreases in the last century were mainly caused by thermal coral bleaching in the southern SCS. This in turn suggests that the repeated coral bleaching and mortalities occurred much earlier before the 1980s, which is a longer-term response to modern global warming during the last century.
The Responses of Sr/Ca, δ18O, and δ13C in the Porites Coral Skeleton to Extreme Thermal Events in the Nansha Islands

Abstract:In recent years, extreme thermal events have become one of the main reasons for coral reef degradation. Determining the variation of coral skeletal geochemical proxies in response to extreme thermal events would be vital evidence for reconstructing historical extreme thermal events using corals. In this study, cores from modern Porites corals YSL24 that lived in 1987-1999 and YSL2A that lived in 1971-1999 were collected from the Yongshu Reef, Nansha Islands, southern South China Sea (SCS) for high-resolution analysis of skeletal Sr/Ca, δ18O, and δ13C to determine the responses of these geochemical proxies to past extreme warming events. There is evidence that extreme warming events occurred in 1973, 1983 and 1998 in the southern SCS during the period 1971-1999. The Sr/Ca ratios in the Porites corals showed a significant negative correlation with the variation in local sea surface temperature (SST), and the values in the bands of these three years were much lower. This suggested a clear record of higher temperatures than other years in response to the warming events in these episodes. Compared with the Sr/Ca ratios, skeletal δ18O proxies in the two Porites corals also revealed a negative correlation with SST, but the δ18O values in these three bands were likely to be less sensitive to the thermal events. This is mainly because the variation in this proxy was controlled by both local SST and sea surface salinity, while the two factors had opposite effects on the seasonal variation of coral δ18O in the SCS. After the removal of the SST contributions, the ∆δ18O series of the Porites corals showed clear annual cycles and a negative correlation with seasonal precipitation, but the records in the bands of those warming years did not reveal clear anomalous shifts due to thermal stress, which might be an inappropriate proxy for identifying extreme warming episodes. In the skeletal δ13C series of Porites corals, an abnormal negative shift was detected during the summers of 1973, 1983, and 1998. This was likely caused by a substantial reduction in photosynthesis of symbiotic zooxanthellae in the coral host cells, a biological reaction of corals responding to thermal stress in the three years. In conclusion, the lower Sr/Ca ratios and negative δ13C shifts in the summer that occurred in the bands of Porites corals in this study, revealed significant coincidence with past extreme warming events. As the Porites corals had a stronger tolerance to thermal stress and much lower bleaching rates than other corals, the abnormal geochemical records in the Porites corals are potential signals indicating local past mass coral bleaching events in recent years.
Skeletal Growth Response of Porites Coral to Long‐Term Ocean Warming and Acidification in the South China Sea

Abstract:Identifying the response of corals to anthropogenic ocean warming and acidification remains challenging, but is critical to understanding coral resilience in a changing world. Here, we report composite records of skeletal growth (1847-2014) of nine Porites spp. colonies from the open ocean of the northern South China Sea (SCS), and paired reconstructions of sea surface temperature (SST) and seawater pH (pH(sw)) by examining skeletal Sr/Ca and delta B-11 from two of the cores. The reconstructions demonstrate that the open ocean of the northern SCS has experienced significant warming since the 1960s with an overall temperature elevation of similar to 0.50 degrees C, and persistent acidification since the 1920s with a decline rate of -0.0102 +/- 0.0017 pH units per decade. Under such environmental changes, coral skeletal density represents a long-term mild decline for the past 168 years, demonstrating significant responses to pH(sw) and SST variation; whereas coral extension and calcification appear to be less affected, exhibiting overall increases over the studied period. However, persistent declines of both parameters are evident from the 1960s to 2014, which coincide with the sustained low pH(sw) and elevated SST. Although the general response of coral calcification (mainly dominated by upward growth) to both warming and acidification falls just short of statistical significance over the decadal timescales, the significantly persistent decline in skeletal density and recent downtrends of calcification still underline a pessimistic situation for corals in the northern SCS.
Coral growth over the past 550 years in the central South China Sea linked to monsoon- and seabird-induced nutrient stress

Abstract:Nutrient enrichment is a widely recognized threat to coastal coral reefs. Yet its impact on open ocean reefs is largely unknown due to the lack of long-term observations at remote sites and the entanglement of various environmental factors affecting coral growth. Here we determined growth rates and the carbonate chemistry of calcifying fluid (CF) of massive corals over the last 550 years at a remote South China Sea reef ecosystem. We show that large growth variations cannot be fully explained by changes in seawater pH or temperature due to the antiphase relationship between growth rate and pH cf as well as small sea surface temperature variations before the 1960s. Instead, coral growth rate decreases proportionally with past seabird populations over the past centuries. We suggest that excess nutrient loads through monsoon pumping and seabird migration played an important role in controlling coral growth at this remote reef ecosystem. Specifically, episodic eutrophication as indicated by a ~ 3 per mil increase in coral δ 13 C has depressed coral growth by ~30% during 15th to 18th centuries, which is comparable to the modern decline. Thus, accurate projections of future coral growth for remote reefs under ongoing human activities and climate change needs to take into account the history of past nutrient inputs into these ecosystems under pre-anthropogenic conditions, which has been overlooked previously due to a lack of historical observations.

Abstract:Scleratinian corals (hard corals) and their symbiotic algae are the ecological engineers of biodiverse and geological important coral reef habitats. The complex, linked physiological processes that enable the holobiont (coral + algae) to calcify and generate reef structures are consequently of great interest. However, the mechanism of calcification is difficult to study for several reasons including the small spatial scales of the processes and the close coupling between the symbiont and host. In this study, we explore the utility of pH and Ca2+ microelectrodes for constraining the rates and spatial distribution of photosynthesis, respiration, and calcification. The work focuses on vertical profiles of pH and Ca2+ through the coelenteron cavity, a semi-isolated compartment of modified seawater amenable to quantitative interpretation. In two studied species, Turbinaria reniformis and Acropora millepora, Ca2+ concentrations decreased in a roughly linear manner from the mouth to the base of the coelenteron, indicating the primary physiological process affecting Ca2+ concentration is removal for calcification below the coelenteron. In contrast, the H+ concentration remained relatively constant over much of the coelenteron cavity before it increased sharply toward the base of the coelenteron, indicative of proton-pumping from the calcification fluid below. The estimated H+ gradient between the coelenteron cavity and the calcification site was >10 times higher than previously predicted. Consequently, the energy required to export protons from the calcifying fluid was estimated to be ~3 times higher than previously calculated. A one-dimensional reaction-diffusion model was used to interpret the pH profile considering the effects of photosynthesis, respiration, and calcification. This model provided a good fit to the observed pH profile and helped to constrain the rates and spatial distribution of these processes. Our modeling results also suggested that adult corals with deeper polyps may be more sensitive to ocean acidification (OA) because of enhanced difficulty to transport H+ out of the coelenteron and into the surrounding seawater.
Reduced calcification and lack of acclimatization by coral colonies growing in areas of persistent natural acidification

Abstract:As the surface ocean equilibrates with rising atmospheric CO 2 , the pH of surface seawater is decreasing with potentially negative impacts on coral calcification. A critical question is whether corals will be able to adapt or acclimate to these changes in seawater chemistry. We use high precision CT scanning of skeletal cores of Porites astreoides , an important Caribbean reef-building coral, to show that calcification rates decrease significantly along a natural gradient in pH and aragonite saturation (Ω arag ). This decrease is accompanied by an increase in skeletal erosion and predation by boring organisms. The degree of sensitivity to reduced Ω arag measured on our field corals is consistent with that exhibited by the same species in laboratory CO 2 manipulation experiments. We conclude that the Porites corals at our field site were not able to acclimatize enough to prevent the impacts of local ocean acidification on their skeletal growth and development, despite spending their entire lifespan in low pH, low Ω arag seawater.
Seagrass-driven changes in carbonate chemistry enhance oyster shell growth

Abstract:Quantifying the strength of non-trophic interactions exerted by foundation species is critical to understanding how natural communities respond to environmental stress. In the case of ocean acidification (OA), submerged marine macrophytes, such as seagrasses, may create local areas of elevated pH due to their capacity to sequester dissolved inorganic carbon through photosynthesis. However, although seagrasses may increase seawater pH during the day, they can also decrease pH at night due to respiration. Therefore, it remains unclear how consequences of such diel fluctuations may unfold for organisms vulnerable to OA. We established mesocosms containing different levels of seagrass biomass (Zostera marina) to create a gradient of carbonate chemistry conditions and explored consequences for growth of juvenile and adult oysters (Crassostrea gigas), a non-native species widely used in aquaculture that can co-occur, and is often grown, in proximity to seagrass beds. In particular, we investigated whether increased diel fluctuations in pH due to seagrass metabolism affected oyster growth. Seagrasses increased daytime pH up to 0.4 units but had little effect on nighttime pH (reductions less than 0.02 units). Thus, both the average pH and the amplitude of diel pH fluctuations increased with greater seagrass biomass. The highest seagrass biomass increased oyster shell growth rate (mm day-1) up to 40%. Oyster somatic tissue weight and oyster condition index exhibited a different pattern, peaking at intermediate levels of seagrass biomass. This work demonstrates the ability of seagrasses to facilitate oyster calcification and illustrates how non-trophic metabolic interactions can modulate effects of environmental change.

Abstract:Coral reef community composition and ecosystem function may change in response to anthropogenic ocean acidification. However, the magnitude of acidification on reefs will be modified by natural spatial and temporal variability in seawater CO2 chemistry. Consequently, it is necessary to quantify the ecological, biogeochemical, and physical drivers of this natural variability before making robust predictions of future acidification on reefs. In this study, we measured temporal and spatial physiochemical variability on a reef flat in Kāne‘ohe Bay, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, using autonomous sensors at sites with contrasting benthic communities and by sampling surface seawater CO2 chemistry across the reef flat at different times of the day during June and November. Mean and diurnal temporal variability of seawater CO2 chemistry was more strongly influenced by depth gradients (~ 0.5–10 m) on the reef rather than benthic community composition. Spatial CO2 chemistry gradients across the reef flat reflected the cumulative influence from benthic metabolism, bathymetry, and hydrodynamics. Based on graphical assessment of total alkalinity–dissolved inorganic carbon data, reef metabolism in November was dominated by organic carbon cycling over inorganic carbon cycling, while these processes were closely balanced in June. Overall, this study highlights the strong influence of depth on reef seawater CO2 chemistry variability through its effects on benthic biomass to seawater volume ratio, seawater flow rates, and residence time. Thus, the natural complexity of ecosystems where a combination of ecological and physical factors influence reef chemistry must be considered when predicting ecosystem biogeochemical responses to future anthropogenic changes in seawater CO2 chemistry.

Enhanced regional variability of seawater pCO2 under human and natural interference in a nearshore coral nature reserve (Dongshan Island, China)

Abstract:CO2 signatures differ among locations, even within the same coastal habitat. However, the driving mechanism behind this variation is not well understood due to the presence of both human and natural stresses. This study examines seawater pCO2 and its deviation from the regional average (defined as pCO2 anomaly) during spring, summer, and winter at two contrasting zones (trial and core zones) of Dongshan coral habitat. The impact of solar, tidal, and biological cycles on pCO2 anomaly is relatively small under the designed sampling scheme. Results show that there is a large positive pCO2 anomaly in the turbid water of the trial zone during all studied seasons, while the large negative pCO2 anomaly in the core zone only occurs during the summer upwelling season. This indicates that CO2 signatures among locations may have seasonality. The physical and biological contributors to pCO2 anomaly are then quantitatively revealed based on a first‐order Taylor decomposition and biological carbon metabolisms. The results suggest that organic carbon metabolism of marine phytoplankton dominated pCO2 anomaly in all three seasons, while inorganic carbon metabolism also enlarged pCO2 anomaly, especially during summer. Physical contributions were minor. Moreover, significant linear correlations between turbidity (related to local human activities), chlorophyll (related to coastal upwelling) and changes in DIC (induced by organic carbon metabolism) indicate human and natural influences on bioprocesses, which may enhance pCO2 anomaly. Finally, the Dongshan coral habitat was estimated as a source of atmospheric CO2, with an annual efflux of approximately 50 t C.

Abstract:Ocean acidification (OA) and thermal stress may undermine corals' ability to calcify and support diverse reef communities, particularly in marginal environments. Coral calcification depends on aragonite supersaturation (Ω » 1) of the calcifying fluid (cf) from which the skeleton precipitates. Corals actively upregulate pH cf relative to seawater to buffer against changes in temperature and dissolved inorganic carbon, which together control Ω cf . Here we assess the buffering capacity of modern and fossil corals from the Galápagos Islands that have been exposed to sub-optimal conditions, extreme thermal stress, and OA. We demonstrate a significant decline in pH cf and Ω cf since the pre-industrial era, trends which are exacerbated during extreme warm years. These results suggest that there are likely physiological limits to corals' pH buffering capacity, and that these constraints render marginal reefs particularly susceptible to OA.

Abstract:With coral reefs declining globally, resilience of these ecosystems hinges on successful coral recruitment. However, knowledge of the acclimatory and/or adaptive potential in response to environmental challenges such as ocean acidification (OA) in earliest life stages is limited. Our combination of physiological measurements, microscopy, computed tomography techniques and gene expression analysis allowed us to thoroughly elucidate the mechanisms underlying the response of early-life stages of corals, together with their algal partners, to the projected decline in oceanic pH. We observed extensive physiological, morphological and transcriptional changes in surviving recruits, and the transition to a less-skeleton/more-tissue phenotype. We found that decreased pH conditions stimulate photosynthesis and endosymbiont growth, and gene expression potentially linked to photosynthates translocation. Our unique holistic study discloses the previously unseen intricate net of interacting mechanisms that regulate the performance of these organisms in response to OA.

Regulation of the Coral-Associated Bacteria and Symbiodiniaceae in Acropora valida Under Ocean Acidification

Abstract:Ocean acidification is one of many stressors that coral reef ecosystems are currently contending with. Thus, understanding the response of key symbiotic microbes to ocean acidification is of great significance for understanding the adaptation mechanism and development trend of coral holobionts. Here, high-throughput sequencing technology was employed to investigate the coral-associated bacteria and Symbiodiniaceae of the ecologically important coral Acropora valida exposed to different pH gradients. After 30 days of acclimatization, we set four acidification gradients (pH 8.2, 7.8, 7.4, and 7.2, respectively), and each pH condition was applied for 10 days, with the whole experiment lasting for 70 days. Although the Symbiodiniaceae density decreased significantly, the coral did not appear to be bleached, and the real-time photosynthetic rate did not change significantly, indicating that A. valida has strong tolerance to acidification. Moreover, the Symbiodiniaceae community composition was hardly affected by ocean acidification, with the C1 subclade ( Cladocopium goreaui ) being dominant among the Symbiodiniaceae dominant types. The relative abundance of the Symbiodiniaceae background types was significantly higher at pH 7.2, indicating that ocean acidification might increase the stability of the community composition by regulating the Symbiodiniaceae rare biosphere. Furthermore, the stable symbiosis between the C1 subclade and coral host may contribute to the stability of the real-time photosynthetic efficiency. Finally, concerning the coral-associated bacteria, the stable symbiosis between Endozoicomonas and coral host is likely to help them adapt to ocean acidification. The significant increase in the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria at pH 7.2 may also compensate for the photosynthesis efficiency of a coral holobiont. In summary, this study suggests that the combined response of key symbiotic microbes helps the whole coral host resist the threats of ocean acidification.

Abstract:Remote seawater has been considered a potential refuge for corals in the face of anthropogenic disturbances. However, these remote areas may receive increased atmospheric N deposition, and the ecological consequences remain unclear. This field survey revealed coral-algal phase shifts in the mid-north of the South China Sea. These shifts were observed in 44%, 13.6%, and 26.5% of the sampled reef sites at depths of 1-4 m, 5-8 m, and 10-15 m, respectively. Over 50% of sections in the deeper depths hosted fewer corals compared to shallower areas, coinciding with a higher abundance of macroalgae in the deeper layers. Furthermore, based on long-term observation of atmospheric N flux, laboratory experiments were conducted to explore the cause of coral declines. The results indicate that N supply efficiently promoted macroalgae growth. The saturation of N absorption by macroalgae occurred within 2 weeks, leading to nutrient accumulation in seawater, especially nitrate, which had a direct impact on corals. While moderate N fluxes appeared to mitigate coral bleaching, high N fluxes, even with a balanced P supply or medium level of nutrients with an imbalanced N/P ratio, can both increase the susceptibility of corals to heat bleaching. This study explains the coral-algal phase shift in remote and relatively deep seawater and improves understanding of the cause-and-effect relationship between atmospheric N deposition and coral reef decline.

Abstract:Coral reef ecosystems have extremely high primary productivity and play an important role in the marine carbon cycle. However, due to the high carbon metabolism efficiency of coral communities, little is known about the carbon sink–source properties of coral reefs. In November 2022, in situ field investigations coupled with incubation experiments were conducted in typical subtropical coral reef waters, i.e., Yangmeikeng Sea Area (Area I) and Dalu Bay (Area II), to explore the dynamics of the carbonate system and its controlling factors. The results revealed that the carbonate parameters had high variability, comprehensively forced by various physical and biochemical processes. Overall, Areas I and II were net sinks of atmospheric CO2, with net uptake fluxes of 1.66 ± 0.40 and 0.99 ± 0.08 mmol C m−2 day−1, respectively. The aragonite saturation state (ΩA), 3.04–3.87, was within the range adequate for growth of tropical shallow-water scleractinian corals. Inorganic carbon budget results indicated that photosynthesis and microbial respiration were the main factors affecting the dynamics of carbonate systems in the whole study area. However, focusing on the reef areas, coral metabolism was also a key factor affecting the carbonate system in seawater (especially in Area I) and its contribution accounted for 28.9–153.3% of the microbial respiration. This study highlighted that metabolism of coral communities could significantly affect the seawater carbonate system, which is of great significance in the context of the current process of ocean acidification.

Seasonal Controls of Seawater CO2 Systems in Subtropical Coral Reefs: A Case Study from the Eastern Coast of Shenzhen, China

Abstract:In situ field investigations coupled with coral culture experiments were carried out in the coral reef waters of the eastern coast of Shenzhen, Da’ao Bay (DAB), Dalu Bay (DLB), and Yangmeikeng Sea Area (YMKSA) to study the dynamics of the carbon dioxide (CO2) system in seawater and its controlling factors. The results indicated that the CO2 parameters were highly variable over a range of spatiotemporal scales, forced by various physical and biochemical processes. Comprehensively, DAB acted as a sink for atmospheric CO2 with exchange flux of –1.51 ± 0.31 to 0.27 ± 0.50 mmol C m−2 d−1, while DLB and YMKSA acted as a CO2 source with exchange fluxes of –0.42 ± 0.36 to 1.69 ± 0.74 mmol C m−2 d−1 and –0.58 ± 0.48 to 1.69 ± 0.41 mmol C m−2 d−1, respectively. The biological process and mixing effect could be the most important factor for the seasonal variation in total alkalinity (TA). In terms of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), in addition to biological process and mixing, its seasonal variation was affected by air–sea exchange and coral metabolism to some extent. Different from the former, the other CO2 parameters, total scale pH (pHT), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), and aragonite saturation state (ΩA), were mainly controlled by a combination of the temperature change, biochemical processes, air–sea exchange, and coral metabolism, while water mixing has little effect on them. In addition, our results indicated that coral communities could significantly increase the DIC/TA ratio by reducing the TA concentration and increasing the DIC in the reef waters, which may promote the acidification of local seawater and need attention.

Abstract:Environmental conditions between the outer reef slope (ORS) and lagoon in tropical atolls are significantly different, but the variations of juvenile coral-microbiomes in the two environments and their relationship with coral thermal acclimatization are poorly understood. We explored this issue based on local water conditions and the microbiome of juvenile corals in the ORS and lagoon in the central South China Sea. Coral-symbiotic Symbiodiniaceae showed significant differences among coral species; Pocillopora verrucosa and Pachyseris rugosa in the ORS, and Acropora formosa in the lagoon were dominated by Durusdinium, but other corals were dominated by Cladocopium. Although A. formosa in the ORS were dominated by Cladocopium (C3u), they were dominated by Durusdinium (D1/D1a) and Cladocopium (C50) in the lagoon. Other coral species were both dominated by Cladocopium in the lagoon and ORS. The relative abundance of bacteria in the Deinococcus-Thermus was generally higher in the lagoon corals than in the ORS corals. Our study indicates that Pocillopora verrucosa, Pachyseris rugosa, and Porites lutea may have high thermal tolerance based on the relatively high abundance of heat-tolerant Durusdinium and Thermus scotoductus. Likewise, A. formosa in the lagoon may acclimatize to the thermal environment based on a high relative abundance of heat-tolerant Durusdinium.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Scleractinian corals are increasingly subjected to local stressors combined with global changes. In subtropical areas, corals exhibit metabolic plasticity and resilience in response to variability and extremes in local temperature, salinity, and light; however, the physiological mechanisms by which corals acclimate or adapt to these changing conditions remain disputed. We assessed the physiological status of the coral Platygyra carnosa during a two-year in situ monitoring survey. To obtain metabolic rates (respiration and photosynthesis), photochemical efficiency (Fv / Fm), and biocalcification measurements, non-invasive techniques such as underwater respirometry, Pulse Amplitude Modulated (PAM) fluorometry, total alkalinity measurements, and digital photography were used. Our findings show clear seasonality in water quality parameters, which affected coral health. Elevated temperatures during the summer were below the maximum monthly mean < 31°C) but reduced the energetic productivity of corals (-44% relative to winter). Fluctuations in salinity (25–38 ppt) and pH (7.65–8.44) were linked to rainfall and reduced calcification rates. The conditions during the spring were favorable for coral metabolism and calcification (+20% relative to summer). Overall, our research demonstrates that the metabolic plasticity of P. carnosa in response to shifts in seawater quality allows this species to survive ongoing environmental change. Our in situ observations provide fundamental insights into coral response mechanisms under changing environmental conditions and contribute to projections of coral health under future scenarios of global change.
