Abstract:Controlled synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials with multiple levels of porous structures across different length scales is of great interest in various applications but it still remains challenging. Most of the current strategies are time consuming and labor intensive, and not readily scaled-up. In this work, we introduce a straightforward one-pot fabrication strategy to prepare a robust and flexible hierarchically macro-meso-micro porous HKUST-1/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite through solvent evaporation, in which MOF crystallization and polymer precipitation are combined together. The effect of the MOF precursor and the polymer initial amount on the morphology of the final composite was thoroughly studied. The interaction between the MOF and the polymer during the evaporation process is the key factor, which would limit the mobility of the polymer chains and cause instability in the MOF growth, thus endowing the composite with a hierarchically macro-meso-micro porous structure. This "all-in-one" porous structure could enhance the mass transport property of molecules within the composite. The obtained HKUST-1/PVDF composite showed an enhanced CO2 adsorption rate constant of 0.821 min(-1) (298 K, 1 bar), which was 3.5 times higher than that of the pristine MOF. In addition, the composite showed an equivalent gas adsorption capacity under all tested pressures and greatly improved water stability.

Abstract:The predictable topologies and designable structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the most important advantages for this emerging crystalline material compared to traditional porous materials. However, pore-environment engineering in MOF materials is still a huge challenge when it comes to the growing requirements of expanded applications. A useful method for the regulation of pore-environments, linker installation, has been developed and applied to a series of microporous MOFs. Herein, employing PCN-700 and PCN-608 as platforms, ionic linker installation was successfully implemented in both microporous and mesoporous Zr-based MOFs to afford a series of ionic frameworks. Selective ionic dye capture results support the ionic nature of these MOFs. The mesopores in PCN-608 are able to survive after installation of the ionic linkers, which is useful for ion exchange and further catalysis. To illustrate this, Ru(bpy)32+, a commonly used photoactive cation, was encapsulated into the anionic mesoporous PCN-608-SBDC via ion exchange. Photocatalytic activity of Ru(bpy)3@PCN-608-SBDC was examined by aza-Henry reactions, which show good catalytic performance over three catalytic cycles.

Abstract:By controlling the terminal organic ligands, various fascinating supramolecular assemblies originating from hydrogen bonding interactions in different dimensions in a series of hexavanadate hybrids were synthesized via step-by-step organic modification. These hybrids were characterized, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the introduction of a rigid bridging ligand has a positive influence on the assembly of supramolecular architectures, providing a new vision for the design and synthesis of advanced inorganic-organic materials.

Abstract:New metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on flexible tetra-carboxylate ligands and Cu(II) are designed to gain stimuli-responsive materials. Unstable MOFs can be more stable with unabated flexibility by replacing coordinated solvent molecules with auxiliary N-based ligands. Two of them are intensively studied by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis and the unit cell parameters during transformations have been observed in detail. They undergo exceptional structural transformations which can be divided into two processes: the thermal-responsive phase transition and the solvent-responsive phase transition. The thermal-responsive phase transition takes place in a narrow temperature interval reversibly. However, the solvent-responsive phase transition is a gradual and irreversible process. The stimuli-responsive mechanism has also been explored by comparing the parameters of the crystal structures under different temperatures. Fascinatingly, their exceptional structural transformations correlate with the flexibility of the ligand fragments and the [Cu2(RCOO)4] clusters.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developing at an unexpected rate over the last two decades. However, the unsatisfactory chemical stability of most MOFs hinders some of the fundamental studies in this field and the implementation of these materials for practical applications. The stability in a MOF framework is mostly believed to rely upon the robustness of the M-L (M = metal ion, L = ligand) coordination bonds. However, the role of organic linkers as agents of stability to the framework, particularly the linker rigidity/flexibility, has been mostly overlooked. In this work, we demonstrate that a ligand-rigidification strategy can enhance the stability of MOFs. Three series of ligand rotamers with the same connectivity but different flexibility were prepared. Thirteen Zr-based MOFs were constructed with the Zr6O4(OH4)(-CO2) n units ( n = 8 or 12) and corresponding ligands. These MOFs allow us to evaluate the influence of ligand rigidity, connectivities, and structure on the stability of the resulting materials. It was found that the rigidity of the ligands in the framework strongly contributes to the stability of corresponding MOFs. Furthermore, water adsorption was performed on some chemically stable MOFs, showing excellent performance. It is expected that more MOFs with excellent stability could be designed and constructed by utilizing this strategy, ultimately promoting the development of MOFs with higher stability for synthetic chemistry and practical applications.

Abstract:The photo-induced polymerization to covalently link metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) by flexible polymer chains is reported for the first time, which endows MOPs with enhanced processability, dispersity, and hydrostability. The resultant hybrid material exhibits 9 times higher capacity and much better reusability than bulk MOPs in the adsorption of methylene blue.

Abstract:Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) have attracted great attention in the past two decades, but a better robustness of polyhedron and functionalization in cage space are still challenging in this field. Attaching metal ions into the cage not only helps to support the pores, but also serves as functional sites. Herein, we successfully achieved control over whether hydrated copper ions enter the cage of molecular octahedron by partly replacing the auxiliary ligands on its paddle wheel cluster. The introduction of hydrated metal ions enhances the robustness of MOP, and the octahedron with hydrated metal ion in cage (compound 4) exhibits higher BET than the one without it (compound 2). The catalytic ability of compound 4 for methanolysis of styrene oxide reaction is significantly improved, with a conversion rate increasing from 53% of compound 2 to 81%.

Abstract:The discovery of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with novel structures provides significant opportunities for developing porous solids with new properties and enriching the structural diversity of functional materials for various applications. The rational design of building units with specific geometric conformations is essential to direct the construction of MOFs with unique properties. Herein, we leverage a ligand desymmetrization approach to construct a series of new MOFs. A flexible tetratopic carboxylate ligand with a tetrahedral geometry was designed and assembled with a Zr6 cluster, generating four Zr-based MOF structures: NU-2600, NU-2700, NU-2800, and NU-1802, in which the ligand configurations and Zr6 cluster connectivities can be controlled by varying solvents and modulators during synthesis. Except for NU-1802, these represent entirely new topologies. Notably, NU-1802 exhibits structural flexibility, with up to a 74% reduction in the unit cell volume as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Given their microporous structures, we studied the adsorption behaviors of n-hexane and 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide to explore the structure-property relationships of these MOFs. Overall, this work highlights ligand desymmetrization as a powerful method to enrich MOF structural diversity and access complex MOFs with non-default topologies suitable for applications such as toxic gas capture.

Abstract:A universal strategy is proposed for the modification of poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) on multiscale and multistructured substrates to promote the in situ growth of large‐area and continuous metal‐organic framework (MOF) films, achieving excellent selective adsorption and synergetic separation of industrially relevant isomers, also realizing the ingenious construction of MOF‐on‐MOFs. Transformation of metal‐organic framework (MOF) particles into thin films is urgently needed for the persistent development of well‐applicable devices, and recently emerging functional‐integrated hybrid frameworks. Although some flexible polymers and exclusive modification approaches have been proposed, the additive‐free and widely applicable strategy has not been reported, hampering the deep investigation of the structure‐performance relationship. A universal strategy for the in situ growth of large‐area and continuous MOF films with controllable microstructures is introduced, through the modification of multi‐scale and multi‐structure substrates with poly(4‐vinylpyridine) as the anchor to capture metal ions via Coulomb attraction. Based on the clarified structure‐adsorption‐separation mechanisms, the customized devices fabricated by in situ growth can achieve highly selective adsorption and excellently synergetic separation of various industrially relevant isomers. In addition, this strategy is also feasible for the construction of MOF‐on‐MOFs with varied lattice parameters. This strategy is easy to implement and will be widely applicable to the surface growth of diverse MOFs on desired substrates, and provides a new concept for developing hybrid MOFs integrating with customized functionalities.

Abstract:A facile one-step solvothermal approach to engineer a van der Waals integrated heteromaterial self-assembled superstructure composed of two structurally distinct species that is polyoxomolybdate and zirconia (POM-ZrO2 ) is reported. Nonclassical aggregation-based self-assembly process grows the superstructure. The introduced POM not only behaves as a catalytically active component of the hybrid structure but also imparts flexibility to the developed POM-ZrO2 superstructures. The material shows high performance toward oxygenation of thioethers as a result of its morphology, composition, and structure. This growing strategy may introduce a viable pathway to the rational design of Van der Waals integrated complex hybrid, catalytically active assemblies with potential applications in different fields.

In general, ophthalmological requirements now allow for lower standards, specifically in refraction, but also in color vision. Also new examination methods are admitted. German and French authorities have announced their opposition being concerned about flight safety for the future.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) chemistry was exploited, for the first time, to regulate the contra-diffusion synthesis of 1D metal–organic framework (MOF) superstructures in the channels of polycarbonate track-etched membranes. The PDA modified template channels facilitate controllability for the heterogeneous nucleation and interfacial growth of various MOFs. Well-defined 1D hybrid MOF nanotubes with a high aspect ratio up to 40 and length of 10 μm were successfully obtained. Potential application of the composite membrane for decontamination of organic dyes was demonstrated by a facile filtration method. This study provides new insights into the surface chemistry directed growth behavior of MOFs on polymeric templates. Moreover, the methodology of PDA chemistry mediated contra-diffusion synthesis opens a new avenue to fabricate diverse 1D superstructures of MOFs and other functional materials.

Abstract:For differentiation of benign and malignant adrenal lesions, sensitivities and specificities of 85-100% can be reached by unenhanced computed tomography (CT)-methods, chemical shift techniques in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), delayed enhanced CT-techniques, and by evaluation of wash-out curves in contrast enhanced CT or MRI. An increasing number of adrenal lesions that are detected on imaging studies for indications unrelated to the adrenals can be immediately characterized by delayed series nowadays. According to excellent results of CT and MRI in characterization of adrenal masses, the indications for fine needle aspiration biopsy have already regressed as well as complications associated with this invasive technique.

Abstract:In this work, we developed an approach that can simultaneously control the morphology and pore-surface chemistry of mesoporous materials. By introducing diols as ‘non-covalent cross-linking agents’, microphase separation of polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-b-polylactide triblock terpolymers can be tuned, leading to the formation of long-lived metastable phase with disordered bicontinuous morphology. After removing polylactide end-block by selectively etching, mesoporous structures can be achieved, but poly(4-vinylpyridine) mid-blocks will be preserved on the inner wall of pores. We demonstrate that the prepared mesoporous materials can be applied as adsorbents for organic dyes and metal ions. This work provides new insight into the development of functionalized mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Constructing architectures with hierarchical porosity has been widely considered as the most efficient way to bypass the problems related to slow mass transfer and inaccessibility of internal space in MOFs. Now, a crystal-growth-dominated strategy is proposed to fabricate hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs). When the crystal growth is dominated by the monomer attachment, the aggregation of nonionic surfactant or polymer can be easily captured and released during the crystal growth process, resulting in the formation and ordering hierarchical pores along the radial direction. Owing to the accelerated mass diffusion and more exposed active sites of this design, HP-MOFs exhibited an enhanced catalytic efficiency in styrene oxidation.

Abstract:Multivariate (MTV) hierarchical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which contain multiple regions arranged in ordered structures, show promise for applications such as gas separation, size-selective catalysis, and controlled drug delivery. However, the complexity of these hierarchical MOFs is limited by a lack of control during framework assembly. Herein, we report the controlled generation of hierarchical MOF-on-MOF structural formation under the guidance of two design principles, surface functionalization and retrosynthetic techniques for stability control. Accordingly, the tunability of spatial distributions, compositions, and crystal sizes has been achieved in these hierarchical systems. The resulting MOF-on-MOF hierarchical structures represent a unique crystalline porous material which contains a controllable distribution of functional groups and metal clusters that are associated together within a framework composite. This general synthetic approach not only expands the scope and tunability of the traditional MTV strategy to multicomponent materials, but also offers a facile route to introduce variants and sequences to sophisticated three-dimensional hierarchical and cooperative systems. As a proof of concept, the photothermal effects of a porphyrinic core-MOF are exploited to trigger the controlled guest release from a shell-MOF with high guest capacity, highlighting the integrated cooperative behaviors in multivariate hierarchical systems.

Abstract:A highly ordered, porous nanoscale network structure of polyoxomolybdate was prepared from the slow decomposition of an unstable precursor compound MoO2(OH)(OOH) in the presence of PEO-containing triblock copolymer gels or semidilute/concentrated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) homopolymer solutions. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements of the 1-μm size crystals revealed an extremely ordered primitive cubic (pc) structure made of polyoxomolybdates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements showed that the overall size of these single crystals was close to 1 μm, in agreement with estimates from the scattering peak widths. Evidence from both scattering measurements and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements suggested that the system formed a highly porous primitive cubic network similar to that of certain zeolite structures. However, the observed lattice constant of 5 nm was much larger. The function of the PEO-containing polymer network was found to be very subtle and complex. Presumably, PEO acted simultaneously as a weak reducing agent and as a viscous matrix to ensure sufficient time for the formation of long-range ordered structures, resulting in the growth of extremely uniform but probably hollow “nanospheres”. We suggest that this new material may find unique applications as a high-efficiency absorbent or catalyst. Furthermore, the current synthetic method may open up new pathways to prepare similar functional nanomaterials.
