Abstract:Soil aggregates with spatially heterogeneous microenvironments influence microbial communities and mineral protection in agricultural soils and play a pivotal role in soil organic carbon (OC) turnover. However, the mechanisms through which conservation practices affect microbial properties and mineral protection to regulate soil OC accumulation at the aggregate scale has not been determined in the black soil region of Northeast China. Here, we investigated the potential mechanisms of soil OC accumulation in two sets of conservation (Cons) and conventional (Conv) soil samples: (1) Cons (no-tillage with straw mulching) and Conv (rotary tillage with straw removal) in a Phaeozem (Lishu County) and (2) Cons (rotary tillage with straw incorporation) and Conv (rotary tillage with straw removal) in a Chernozem (Da'an County). The soil aggregates were classified into three fractions: macroaggregates (0.25-2 mm), microaggregates (0.053-0.25 mm), and silt and clay (< 0.053 mm). Cons significantly increased soil OC by increasing macroaggregate-associated OC. Cons significantly increased the concentrations of free iron oxides (Fe-d), iron-bound OC and calcium-bound OC in macro- and microaggregates (except in calcium-bound OC within microaggregates in Lishu) and increased exchangeable calcium (Ca-exe) in Da'an. Additionally, Cons significantly increased the relative abundance of Gemmatimonadota in functionally and topologically important (FTI) taxa within macroaggregates. In Da'an, the relative abundance of Ascomycota in FTI taxa within the macroaggregates and microaggregates was significantly greater in Cons. Cons significantly reduced microbial network complexity (except in microaggregates in Lishu). Structural equation modeling indicated that conservation practices regulated stable OC pools accumulation through mineral protection (mainly Ca-exe and Fe-d) and network complexity to increase macroaggregate-associated OC. Our findings emphasize the joint role of soil minerals and microbes in increasing soil OC through the modulation of macroaggregate-associated OC accumulation, which has important implications for enhancing soil quality and improving agricultural sustainability.
Enhanced microbial contribution to mineral-associated organic carbon accrual in drained wetlands: Beyond direct lignin-iron interactions

Abstract:Drainage poses a major threat to the tremendous soil organic carbon (SOC) reservoir in wetlands. However, drainage-induced carbon loss may be mitigated by the accumulation of mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) via both microbial processes and iron (Fe)-organic matter (especially lignin) interactions, which remains under-investigated in wetlands. Here using a novel analytical approach, we quantitatively examined the response of MAOC to drainage and the driving mechanisms in four distinct wetlands. Contrary to the prevailing assumption, MAOC consisted a significant fraction (7%∼91%) of wetland SOC, and increased with mineral-bound (microbial-dominated) sugars, but decreased with Fe-bound lignin phenols in SOC assessed after removal of reactive soil minerals. Furthermore, mineral-bound sugars increased with clay and reactive aluminum instead of Fe, and overrode Fe-bound lignin regarding contribution to MAOC after long-term drainage. These results indicate that microbial processes leading to microbial sugars accumulation played a prominent role in wetland MAOC accrual after long-term drainage, especially in soils rich in reactive Al and clay. Our study highlights the prevalent yet under-investigated microbial regulation on MAOC accrual in wetlands during long-term drainage. Given the large stock and persistence of MAOC in wetlands, its increase may partly compensate for particulate organic carbon loss during drainage, and may underpin wetland SOC stabilization in the long term.

Abstract:Abstract Sphagnum wetlands are global hotspots for carbon storage, conventionally attributed to the accumulation of decay-resistant litter. However, the buildup of mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) with relatively slow turnover has rarely been examined therein. Here, employing both large-scale comparisons across major terrestrial ecosystems and soil survey along Sphagnum gradients in distinct wetlands, we show that Sphagnum fosters a notable accumulation of metal-bound organic carbon (OC) via activating iron and aluminum (hydr)oxides in the soil. The unique phenolic and acidic metabolites of Sphagnum further strengthen metal-organic associations, leading to the dominance of metal-bound OC in soil MAOC. Importantly, in contrast with limited MAOC sequestration potentials elsewhere, MAOC increases linearly with soil OC accrual without signs of saturation in Sphagnum wetlands. These findings collectively demonstrate that Sphagnum acts as an efficient ‘rust engineer’ that largely boosts the rusty carbon sink in wetlands, potentially increasing long-term soil carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Peatlands represent the largest natural terrestrial carbon (C) store, however, this C can become destabilized, particularly in response to anthropogenic disturbance or lowering of the water table. Several different paradigms have been proposed to explain the positive or negative relationships of moisture status with C loss rates in peat soils (e.g. 'enzyme latch', 'iron gate'). The relative importance of these regulatory mechanisms and whether they are mutually exclusive, however, remain unknown. To address this, we evaluated the effects of contrasting soil moisture regime and iron concentration on organic matter mineralization in an agriculturally managed lowland fen peat. Our results showed that for the first 50 days of incubation, phenol oxidative activity under saturated conditions (120% water holding capacity; WHC) was lower than that at 65% WHC, but after this period the pattern was reversed. These results suggest that two different mechanisms may control phenol oxidative activity simultaneously, with the dominant controlling factor and final response being dependent on the trade-offs between oxygen and Fe(II) effects. Although Fe(II) addition increased phenol oxidative activity, it suppressed SOC mineralization regardless of the soil moisture content, suggesting that iron can protect soil C from microbial decomposition in lowland peat soils. Our study has implications for understanding the widely divergent bio-geochemical functions of soil moisture on peat soils and emphasizes the influence of oxygen and Fe(II) on phenol oxidative activity and SOC mineralization.

Abstract:The carbon storage of wetlands is related to inhibited enzyme activity (particularly phenol oxidase) under oxygen-deprived conditions. However, phenol oxidase response to field drainage is highly uncertain, constraining our ability to predict wetland carbon–climate feedbacks. Here, using literature data, laboratory simulations and a pair-wise survey of 30 diverse wetlands experiencing long-term (15–55 years) drainage across China, we show that while short-term drainage generally leads to increased phenol oxidative activity, its response to long-term drainage diverges in Sphagnum versus non- Sphagnum wetlands. In non- Sphagnum wetlands, long-term drainage is linked to increased plant secondary metabolites and decreased phenol oxidase-producing microbes, while in Sphagnum wetlands, drainage is linked to replacement of antimicrobial Sphagnum by vascular plants and increased phenol oxidative activity with cascading effects on hydrolytic enzymes. Our findings highlight that trait-based plant dynamics are pivotal to decipher wetland carbon dynamics and feedback to climate change under shifting hydrological regimes.

Abstract:Mineral binding of organic carbon (OC) is one of the key mechanisms promoting soil organic carbon (SOC) persistence, which is vital for the long‐term sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide into soils. However, the relative importance of two main types of soil minerals ‐ metal oxides and silicate clay ‐ in SOC protection remains unclear, hampering our ability to predict and protect this important pool of persistent SOC. Here, we analyzed OC bound to metal oxides (OCmetal) versus silicate clay (OCclay) in soils from contrasting environments (i.e., wetlands and uplands) using sequential dissolution by dithionite and hydrofluoric acid. We found that OCmetal% was higher than OCclay% in both wetlands and uplands, indicating the dominance of metal oxides in SOC protection. The sum of OCmetal% and OCclay% constituted a higher fraction of SOC in wetlands than uplands, suggesting an underappreciated role of mineral (in particular, metal oxide) protection in wetland SOC preservation. Furthermore, using lignin phenol analysis in tandem, ∼23% of lignin phenols were additionally released after the removal of silicate clay, providing a potential means to assess 'hidden' lignin in mineral matrices. Given the wide use of lignin phenols as tracers for terrestrial plant‐derived OC, our results suggest that the contribution of terrestrial or plant‐derived carbon to sedimentary carbon stocks or mineral‐protected SOC deserves reassessment. These findings highlight the differential role of various soil minerals in the protection of SOC and its components in contrasting terrestrial environments, which warrants better recognition for understanding the distribution and dynamics of mineral‐protected SOC.

Abstract:The replacement of farmland by native hygro-plants is increasingly common globally within the context of wetland ecosystem restoration. Understanding the long-term effects of this replacement on the abundance and persistence of soil organic carbon (SOC) in mountain marshes is important for soil carbon management. Here, the restored plateau mountain marshes of Duliu River Wetland Provincial Nature Reserve, China was selected. The properties, soil moisture content (SMC), pH, texture, free-form iron oxides ( ), amorphous iron oxides ( ), mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC), and iron-bound organic carbon (Fe-OC) were analyzed in topsoil samples (0 ~ 20 cm) during the restoration of rice paddies to Sphagnum palustre L. wetlands for 0, 2, 10, and 20 years. Natural Sphagnum wetlands were also used as the control. We found that marsh restoration increased SMC, , , / , SOC, MAOC, Fe-OC, Fe-OC/SOC, but decreased the MAOC/SOC ratio. MAOC/SOC ratio of marshes were expectedly lower than the proportion of labile SOC in total SOC during the restoration period. SMC, SOC, and MAOC were higher in the natural Sphagnum wetlands than in other habitats. Both SOC and Fe-OC/SOC were positively correlated with SMC, , , / , and Fe-OC, but negatively correlated with soil pH. MAOC/SOC was negatively correlated with SMC, and / . These results emphasized the significance of reconverting rice paddies to marsh wetlands for increasing the sequestration of labile SOC and Fe-OC. Further studies are required to identify and quantify the organo-mineral stabilization mechanisms of SOC at the different SOC fractionations throughout the restoration period.

Abstract:The tremendous reservoir of soil organic carbon (SOC) in wetlands is being threatened by water-table decline (WTD) globally. However, the SOC response to WTD remains highly uncertain. Here we examine the under-investigated role of iron (Fe) in mediating soil enzyme activity and lignin stabilization in a mesocosm WTD experiment in an alpine wetland. In contrast to the classic ‘enzyme latch’ theory, phenol oxidative activity is mainly controlled by ferrous iron [Fe(II)] and declines with WTD, leading to an accumulation of dissolvable aromatics and a reduced activity of hydrolytic enzyme. Furthermore, using dithionite to remove Fe oxides, we observe a significant increase of Fe-protected lignin phenols in the air-exposed soils. Fe oxidation hence acts as an ‘iron gate’ against the ‘enzyme latch’ in regulating wetland SOC dynamics under oxygen exposure. This newly recognized mechanism may be key to predicting wetland soil carbon storage with intensified WTD in a changing climate.

Abstract:The distribution patterns and accumulation mechanisms of plant and microbial residues, along with their potential contributions to soil organic carbon (SOC), remain subjects of considerable debate, particularly within drawdown areas affected by reservoir operation. In this study, surface soil samples (0–10 cm) were collected from three different elevations within the drawdown area of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Amino sugars and lignin phenols served as biomarkers for microbial residues and plant-derived materials, respectively. The results revealed that with increasing duration of flooding, the content of amino sugars increased from 0.26 mg g −1 to 0.64 mg g −1 , whereas the content of lignin phenols decreased from 204.09 mg kg −1 to 37.93 mg kg −1 . Moreover, as the duration of flooding increased, the contribution of microbial necromass carbon (MNC) to SOC rose from 29% to 47%, while the contribution of plant-derived carbon to SOC gradually declined. Plants biomass and iron minerals influenced the accumulation of lignin phenols, whereas amino sugars were affected by plants biomass, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and clay minerals. The periodic flooding and drying events induced alterations in carbon inputs and environmental characteristics within the drawdown area, resulting in fluctuations in the contributions of plants and MNC to SOC in this region. The findings of this study highlight the critical role played by both plant- and microbial-derived carbon in the retention and turnover of SOC within the terrestrial-aquatic transition zone.

Abstract:Subtropical moss peatlands are valuable delicate ecosystems that play crucial roles in biodiversity preservation, carbon sequestration, and water retention. However, driven by economic interests, a large area of subtropical moss peatlands in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau of China has been used for drainage and afforestation of a Cryptomeria japonica forest, leading to changes in the ecological functions of the peatlands. The Biolog EcoPlate™ method was used to study the differences in the carbon utilization functions of the soil microbial communities between a typical natural Sphagnum fen (SF), a natural Polytrichum bog (PB) and a Cryptomeria swamp forest that were formed by long-term drainage and afforestation (more than 20 years) in the region. Combined with measurements of the soil physicochemical properties, the effects of drainage and afforestation on different types of moss peatlands and the underlying mechanisms were explored. The results showed that long-term drainage and afforestation significantly increased the soil microbial carbon utilization activity and functional diversity in the SF, but no significant effects were observed in the PB. Drainage and afforestation did not significantly alter the proportion structures of the soil microbial carbon source utilization in the SF or PB but did significantly affect soil microbial preferences for specific carbon source utilization in the SF. Carbohydrates, amino acids, carboxylic acids and polymers were the main carbon sources utilized by the microbial communities in the three vegetation types. The soil volumetric water content (SVW) and available phosphorus (AP) content were significant factors affecting the functional characteristics of soil microbial carbon utilization. There was a significant negative correlation between the SVW and the activity of soil microbial carbon source utilization and functional diversity, and there was a significant positive correlation between the AP and polymer utilization activity. Moreover, the SVW significantly and indirectly affected overall carbon source utilization by influencing the utilization of carbohydrates. In the restoration of subtropical moss peatlands affected by drainage and afforestation, in addition to emphasizing vegetation restoration, the SF restoration should be focused on the restoration of water conditions, while the PB restoration should be focused on the restoration of nutrients (such as AP).

Abstract:Land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) is the main cause of mangrove deforestation and degradation. However, the effect of LULCC on mangrove soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions and metal pollution risks, and the difference between the effects of those two soil evolutions are largely unknown. Here, we collected soil samples from natural systems (mangroves and mudflat), land-cover changes (Spartina alterniflora invasion), and anthropogenic land-use changes (cropland and culture pond) in Zhangjiang Estuary. We determined the soil aggregate fractions (macro-aggregate, micro-aggregate, and silt-clay fraction) and the associated carbon, and heavy metal dynamics. Our findings suggested that LULCC did not remarkably affect SOC contents, but changed the soil aggregate structures. LULCC significantly increased aggregate-associated carbon fractions, especially macro-aggregate carbon fraction. The large proportion of silt-clay fraction in natural systems was corresponding to a high percentage of mineral organic carbon, indicating that LULCC decreases the mangrove SOC stability. Land-cover change promoted the accumulation of SOC, nitrogen, and heavy metals compared with uninvaded mudflat. The heavy metal contents in mangrove soil were highest among all studied soils, expect for Cd, which suggested that mangrove soil had high metal accumulation. However, land-use changes could stimulate the mobility and dynamics of metals enriched in mangrove soils; these changes, especially in cropland, will also cause a large amount of exogenous Cd being exported into the adjacent aquatic environment. Thus, mangrove shifts metal pollutant from sink to source when affected by land-use changes. The contamination index demonstrated that heavy metals have posed ecological risks, especially for Cd in cropland. Compared with mangrove, land-use change was dominated by single-element pollution, but land-cover change showed low multiple-element complex pollution. These findings elucidate the effects of LULCC on mangrove SOC fraction and metal pollution risk, and are of great significance for designing the long-term management and conservation policies for mangrove managers.

Abstract:Subtropical moss peatlands have important ecological functions, and their protection and restoration are urgent. The lack of understanding of the biogeochemical changes in subtropical moss peatlands after human disturbance, particularly regarding their underground ecological changes, limits the efforts towards their protection and restoration. In this study, typical subtropical moss peatlands and the Cryptomeria swamp forest (CSF) formed by long-term (more than 20 years) drainage and afforestation in the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau of China were selected as the research sites. Moreover, 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology was used to study the differences in soil bacterial community diversity and composition among a natural Sphagnum fen (SF), Polytrichum bog (PB), and CSF to explore the effects of drainage and afforestation on different types of moss peatlands and its mechanism combined with soil physicochemical properties. Results showed that (1) drainage and afforestation significantly reduced the α diversity of soil bacterial communities in SF while significantly increasing the α diversity of soil bacterial communities in PB. Soil bacterial communities of SF had the highest α diversity and had many unique species or groups at different taxonomic levels. (2) The impact of drainage and afforestation on the soil bacterial community composition in SF was significantly higher than that in PB. Drainage and afforestation caused significant changes in the composition and relative abundance of dominant groups of soil bacteria in SF at different taxonomic levels, such as significantly reducing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, significantly increasing the relative abundance of Acidobacteria, and significantly reducing the ratio of Proteobacteria to Acidobacteria, but did not have a significant impact on the corresponding indicators of PB. The changes in the ratio of Proteobacteria to Acidobacteria may reflect changes in the trophic conditions of peatlands. (3) Soil moisture content, available phosphorus content, and pH were key driving factors for changes in soil bacterial community composition and diversity, which should be paid attention to in the restoration of moss peatlands. This study provides insights into the protection and restoration of subtropical moss peatlands.

Abstract:Wetlands in the Yarlung Tsangpo River Basin (YTR) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau provide immense soil organic carbon (SOC) storage, which is highly susceptible to climate warming and requires urgent deciphering SOC stabilization mechanisms of long-term protection of SOC against decomposition. Conflicting views exist regarding whether persistent SOC is controlled by molecular features or by mineral protection. As such, this study quantified SOC stability using two thermal indices (TG-T50, and DSC), described molecular features of SOC using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and measured SOC protection by minerals using a chemical extraction method. Results indicated SOC of topsoils had higher thermal stability, with TG-T50 and DSC-T50 of 337.61 °C and 384.58 °C, than that of subsoils with TG-T50 and DSC-T50 of 337.32 and 382.67 °C, respectively. We found subsoils had significantly higher proportions of aliphatic and aromatic compounds, while existed higher SOC associated with minerals. It seemed SOC stabilization differed with soil depths, in which mineral protection dictated SOC thermal stability in topsoils while molecular features posed a more important constraint on SOC stabilization in subsoils. Overall, our findings support the hypothesis of physical and chemical protection but emphasized that SOC thermal stability largely depended on to extent of the combination between molecular features and mineral protection, which explained 55% in topsoils and 73% in subsoils, respectively.

Abstract:Summary Human activities have been a significant driver of environmental changes with tremendous consequences for carbon (C) dynamics. Peatlands are critical ecosystems because they store ~30% of the global soil organic C pool and are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic changes. The Zoige peatland on the eastern Tibet Plateau, as the largest alpine peatland in the world, accounts for 1‰ of global peat soil organic C storage. However, this peatland has experienced dramatic climate change including increased temperature and reduced precipitation in the past decades, which likely is responsible for a decline of the water‐table and facilitated earthworm invasion, two major factors reducing soil organic carbon (SOC) storage of peatlands. Because earthworms often are more active in low‐ than in high‐moisture peatlands, we hypothesized that the simultaneous occurrence of water‐table decline and earthworm invasion would synergistically accelerate the release of SOC from peatland soil. We conducted a field experiment with a paired split‐plot design, i.e. presence vs. absence of the invasive earthworms (Pheretima aspergillum) nested in drained vs. undrained plots, respectively, for 3 years within the homogenous Zoige peatland. Water‐table decline significantly decreased soil water content and bulk density, resulting in a marked reduction of SOC storage. Moreover, consistent with our hypothesis, earthworm presence dramatically reduced SOC in the drained but not in the undrained peatland through the formation of deep burrows and decreasing bulk density of the lower soil layer over 3 years. The variation in SOC likely was due to changes in above‐ground plant biomass, root growth and earthworm behaviour induced by the experimental treatments. Synthesis and applications. We suggest that incentive measures should be taken to prevent further water‐table decline and earthworm invasion for maintaining the soil carbon pool in Zoige peatland. Artificial filling of drainage canals should be implemented to increase the water‐table level, facilitating the recovery of drained peatlands. Moreover, the dispersal of earthworms and their cocoons attached to the roots of crop plants and tree saplings from low‐lying areas to the Zoige region should be prevented.
Linking microbial carbon pump capacity and efficacy to soil organic carbon storage and stability under heavy metal pollution

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution can lead to a great loss of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, the microbial mechanisms that link heavy metal pollution to SOC remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated five apple-orchard soils at different distances from a Pb−Zn smelter. After assessing the heavy metal pollution level based on Grade II of the national soil environmental quality standard (China), we found SOC stocks and microbial carbon pump (MCP) capacity (i.e., microbial residue carbon) under medium and heavy pollution levels were significantly lower than those under safe, cordon and light pollution levels. The structural equation model showed causality in the SOC variations linked to pollution level through MCP capacity, which could contribute 77.8% of the variance in SOC storage. This verified MCP capacity can serve as a key parameter for evaluation of SOC storage under heavy metal pollution. Soil MCP efficacy, i.e., the proportion of microbial residue carbon to SOC, also decreased under medium and heavy pollution. This suggested that, with a heavier pollution level, there was a higher rate of reduction of microbial residue carbon in soil than the rate of reduction of SOC. As MCP efficacy can be a useful assessment of SOC stability, the significantly positive relationship between MCP efficacy and clay content in correlation analysis implied that lower MCP efficacy was correlated with SOC stability under the heavier pollution level. Our study provides valuable insights to identify the mechanisms of microbially mediated C transformation processes that are influenced by heavy metal pollution in agroecosystems.

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) enrichment is closely related to soil organic carbon (SOC) pools in terrestrial ecosystems, which are deeply intertwined with soil microbial processes. However, the influence of HMs on SOC remains contentious in terms of magnitude and direction. A global analysis of 155 studies was conducted to integrate the synergistic responses of SOC and microorganisms to HM enrichment. A significant increase of 13.6 % in SOC content was observed in soils exposed to HMs. The response of SOC to HMs primarily depends on soil properties and habitat conditions, particularly the initial SOC content, mean annual precipitation (MAP), initial soil pH, and mean annual temperature (MAT). The presence of HMs resulted in significant decreases in the activities of key soil enzymes, including 31.9 % for soil dehydrogenase, 24.8 % for β-glucosidase, 35.8 % for invertase, and 24.3 % for cellulose. HMs also exerted inhibitory effects on microbial biomass carbon (MBC) (26.6 %), microbial respiration (MR) (19.7 %), and the bacterial Shannon index (3.13 %) but elevated the microbial metabolic quotient ( q CO 2 ) (20.6 %). The HM enrichment-induced changes in SOC exhibited positive correlations with the response of MBC ( r = 0.70, p < 0.01) and q CO 2 ( r = 0.50, p < 0.01), while it was negatively associated with β-glucosidase activity ( r = 0.72, p < 0.01) and MR ( r = 0.39, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that the increase in SOC storage is mainly attributable to the inhibition of soil enzymes and microorganisms under HM enrichment. Overall, this meta-analysis highlights the habitat-dependent responses of SOC to HM enrichment and provides a comprehensive evaluation of soil carbon dynamics in an HM-rich environment.

Abstract:Wetlands, which are ecosystems with the highest soil surface carbon density, have been severely degraded and replaced by artificial reclamation for fish and shrimp ponds in recent years. This transformation is causing intricate shifts in soil carbon pools and microbial stability. In this study, we examined natural wetlands and reclaimed aquaculture ponds in Southeast China to analyze the structure and network stability of soil microbial communities following the reclamation of estuarine wetlands and to elucidate the microbial-mediated mechanisms for regulating soil organic carbon (SOC). The aquaculture ponds presented significantly less average SOC content than the natural wetlands (p < 0.05). ACE, Chao1, and Shannon's indices of bacteria and fungi were decreased in aquaculture ponds. Less numbers of nodes and edge links in the co-occurrence network of soil fungi and bacteria in aquaculture ponds. This suggests reduced correlation and stability within the microbial network of aquaculture ponds. Decomposers in soil fungi (e.g. Dung Saprotroph) reduced. Reduced proportions of key phyla Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Rozellomycota in the soil fungal network. Reduced proportions of key phyla Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Desulfobacterota in the soil bacterial network. In conclusion, our results suggest that converting wetland paddocks to intensive aquaculture ponds results in carbon pool loss and reduces soil microbial network stability. The results highlight the importance of protecting or moderately restoring mangrove wetlands along the coast of southeastern China. It is also predicted that such measures may enhance the storage capacity of soil carbon pools and improve the stability of carbon sequestration by soil microorganisms, thus offering a potential solution for mitigating global climate change.

Abstract:Soils are an important pool for storing organic carbon. Differences in soil managements, the effect of land use, and other factors are often evaluated to explain the dynamics and storage potential of the total soil organic carbon (SOC). As the SOC pool is composed of several subpools with different degrees of stability and turnover rate, insights into the dynamics and driving factors of the functional pools are essential for evaluating carbon sequestration or emission. In China, coastal wetlands are undergoing intensive reclamation due to the ever-increasing population. However, the dynamics and identification of key drivers of the functional SOC pools of reclaimed soils remain largely unclear. In this study, the concentrations of SOC and permanganate-oxidizable carbon (POxC) were determined for soils with different reclamation durations and land uses in an intensified reclamation region in eastern China. A random forest (RF) model was used to identify the importance of the potential drivers of the SOC and POxC at 241 sites in this study area. The result indicated that both SOC and POxC increased significantly with reclamation duration until 65 years of land reclamation. The human-dominated land uses had significantly (p < 0.05) higher levels of SOC and POxC than the tidal flats. For lands with identical reclamation durations, the paddy soils were superior to the upland soils in terms of sequestering the SOC and POxC. Soil total nitrogen (STN), pH and soil total phosphorus (STP) were identified as the most important factors impacting the spatial pattern of SOC, while the three most important drivers of POxC were STN, STP and Cl in coastal reclaimed lands. The relatively higher POxC contents and POxC/SOC ratios of the reclaimed soils in this study compared to previous studies suggest that reclaimed soils are potentially under the great threat of global warming due to the high sensitivity of POxC to environmental changes. However, paddy management practices are recommended as an efficient approach for minimizing the potential negative impacts of global warming because of the larger POxC sequestration ability of paddy soils than that of other land uses.
