Abstract:Pea pods are by-products of the pea processing industries which are often disposed improperly but are rich reserves of nutrients. In this work, pea pod powder (PPP) was prepared and analysed for its nutritional, physical, functional and structural characteristics for food applications. Results showed that PPP contained 6.3% moisture, 5.2% ash, 3.5% crude fat, 13.3% crude protein, and 35.3% dietary fiber. Further, PPP exhibited 0.47 g/ml bulk density, 0.50 g/ml aerated bulk density, 0.62 g/ml tapped bulk density and had fair flowability as determined by Hausner's ratio and Carr's index. PPP also showed good functional characteristics with 3.24 g/g water absorption index, 7.9% water solubility index, 1.25 g/g oil absorption capacity, and 4.65% swelling power. Based on its excellent qualities, PPP was used to prepare cookies which were analyzed for its structural and spectral characteristics. The X-ray diffraction pattern of PPP and cookies revealed that the crystalline region in the latter remained intact. The FTIR spectra showed the presence of different functional groups in PPP and cookies. The study showed that PPP could be utilized as a beneficial ingredient in dietetic products such as baked goods due to its good water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity and dietary fiber content.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate 16 early Indian cauliflower genotypes for agro-morphological traits, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. Analysis of variance, cluster analyses, and principal components analysis (PCA) elucidated patterns of variation among the genotypes. The genotype CC 12 exhibited highest marketable curd weight (450 g). Curd sinigrin varied from 3.29 to 16.37 µmol 100g−1 FW with maximum in DC 41–5. Total antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC and FRAP) ranged from 8.87 to 24.24 mg GAE 100g−1 and 11.71 to 34.00 mg GAE 100g−1 FW, respectively. The Phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was higher than the Genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters with highest GCV, PCV and high heritability value for sinigrin content in curd. D2 statistics classified the genotypes into three clusters where genotypes in cluster I had high sinigrin both in curd and leaf. The PCA revealed that first principal component (PC1) contributed 47.86% of total variation whereas, second principal component (PC2) contributed 35.14%. The genotypes Pusa Deepali, Selection 71, and CC 13 could be used in breeding programme for higher yield and bioactive compounds.

Abstract:Chickpea ( Cicer arietinum L.) is an important food legume crop grown mostly in Asia and Africa as well as in other parts of the world, and serves as an important source of protein in the diets of vegetarian people. Lot of variation in grain quality traits has been observed in cultivated chickpea in both desi and Kabuli types. It has often been observed that seeds with smaller size have more protein when compared with those with larger size. The joint dependence of these two traits on the same primary characteristics results in this negative relationship. This negative correlation coupled with breeding efforts aimed at increasing grain yield has hampered the progress of improving these two traits simultaneously. Therefore, a germplasm exhibiting wider variability for these quantitative traits is an important resource for the identification of novel alleles. Herein, we report the wide variation observed for five important quantitative traits including days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, 100-seed weight and protein content, and also report the significant positive correlation observed between 100-seed weight and protein content in a diverse collection of chickpea germplasm comprising both desi and Kabuli types.

Abstract:This study analyzed the diversity of major yield traits and nutritional components across 122 chickpea breeding lines, cultivars, and landraces of different origins. All parameters showed significant variations, with a variance ranging from 4.61% in days to maturity (DM) to 43.04% in oleic acid. Six accessions, including CP021, CP022, CP026, CP037, CP066, and CP109, outperformed in yield traits and nutritional value. Origin significantly affected all phenotypic traits except total fatty acid contents, with Indian and Ukrainian accessions demonstrating contrasting performances. Most traits, except for the number of seeds per pod (SPP), palmitic acid, and total fatty acid contents, differed significantly among breeding lines, cultivars, and landraces. Breeding lines were the earliest to flower and to mature with average days to flowering (DF) of 50.23 days and DM of 101.50 days. They also had the highest average SPP, number of pods per plant (PPP), total seeds per plant (TSPP), total protein, crude fiber, dietary fiber, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid contents making them preferable for high yield and nutrition. Hierarchical cluster analysis classified the chickpea accessions into seven clusters, showing significant variations in yield traits and nutritional components. Principal component and Pearson's correlation analyses indicated positive correlations between DM and DF, and between SPP, PPP, and TSPP. Nutritional components also displayed varying associations, with a notable negative correlation between oleic and linoleic acids, the two essential fatty acids. Overall, this study showed the diversity of key phenotypic traits in chickpea breeding lines, cultivars, and landraces of different origins. The significant effects of genotype and origin differences on these traits could be used as a basis for future metabolomics and genomics research.

Abstract:Background: Cicer arietinum (L.), is a legume being grown world wide as a good source of vegan protein. It is a vital part of human feed. Quantification of biochemical parameters of seed is one of the requirements for breeding programmes to develop cultivars suitable for human consumption and food industry. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate chickpea genotypes on the basis of biochemical parameters to select superior germplasm for further crop improvement. Methods: In this investigation, seventy-one chickpea genotypes employed for different biochemical parameters analysis including protein, total free amino acid and sugar content, reducing and non-reducing sugar, phytic acid, total phenol, flavonoid and tannin content along with DPPH radical scavenging activities. Result: Genotypes showed substantial variation for different biochemical parameters. Maximum seed protein content was found in genotype JG315 (25.1%) and lowest in SAGL-152344 (14.3%), whilst content of amino acid ranged between 2.4 mg/g (SAGL-152318) to 9.51 mg/g (SAGL-152330). Maximum phytic acid content was evident in genotype SAGL22-122 (20.7 mg/g) and lowest in JG315 (4.78 mg/g). Range of total phenol content varied between 0.72mg/g (RVSSG 92) to 1.91 mg/g (ICCV20116).

Abstract:Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is the most important pulse crop providing the livelihood to farmers. India is one of the topmost countries in chickpea production followed by middle-east. Assessment of morphological traits and their genetic diversity will help in increasing production of chickpea. A comprehensive evaluation of 44 distinct chickpea genotypes was conducted during 2020-21 Rabi season at RLBCAU, Jhansi. Utilizing Tocher's method and D2 values, the studied genotypes were meticulously organized into nine non-overlapping clusters, with cluster (I) comprising the most, featuring 17 genotypes, followed by cluster (II) with 12 genotypes. Significant genetic diversity was evident, especially between clusters (IV) and (VI) (2710.13) followed by (V) and (VI) (2565.51), highlighting the diversity among these genotypes. Key contributors to this divergence were 100-seed weight (48.8%), number of secondary branches per plant (26.5%), and seed yield per plant (9%). Cluster (VIII) exhibited higher mean values for days to maturity (140.57), while cluster (VII) had elevated values for the number of pods per plant (84.61). Genotypes like Phule G 171105, RVSSG 81, RLBG 6, GL-16063, and RKG 19-2 emerged as potential contributors to future breeding programs, promising significant hybrid vigour and superior heterotic segregants to advance chickpea genetics.

Abstract:Chickpea ( Cicer arietinum L.) is a vital grain legume, offering an excellent balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, essential micronutrients, and vitamins that can contribute to addressing the global population's increasing food and nutritional demands. Chickpea protein offers a balanced source of amino acids with high bioavailability. Moreover, due to its balanced nutrients and affordable price, chickpea is an excellent alternative to animal protein, offering a formidable tool for combating hidden hunger and malnutrition, particularly prevalent in low-income countries. This review examines chickpea's nutritional profile, encompassing protein, amino acids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, micronutrients, vitamins, antioxidant properties, and bioactive compounds of significance in health and pharmaceutical domains. Emphasis is placed on incorporating chickpeas into diets for their myriad health benefits and nutritional richness, aimed at enhancing human protein and micronutrient nutrition. We discuss advances in plant breeding and genomics that have facilitated the discovery of diverse genotypes and key genomic variants/regions/quantitative trait loci contributing to enhanced macro- and micronutrient contents and other quality parameters. Furthermore, we explore the potential of innovative breeding tools such as CRISPR/Cas9 in enhancing chickpea's nutritional profile. Envisioning chickpea as a nutritionally smart crop, we endeavor to safeguard food security, combat hunger and malnutrition, and promote dietary diversity within sustainable agrifood systems.

Abstract:Background: Cowpea is a major legume crop which has high protein content and provides a powerful tool to combat malnutrition due to its highly nutritional value. Identification of superior genotypes will aid in cowpea breeding program. Genetic variability is the foremost requirement in a breeding population for the selection of high yielding genotypes. To develop a new high yielding variety, it is important to study the genetic variability present in it so that proper and efficient selection could be done and most promising genotypes could be identified. Methods: Keeping this in mind, studies on genetic variability in grain cowpea was done utilizing 40 diverse exotic and indigenous cowpea genotypes which were evaluated for ten quantitative characters for two consecutive years 2020 and 2021. The experiment was planted in randomized block design with 3 replications at Pantnagar. Data was recorded on ten characters. Result: Mean squares were found to be highly significant for all the characters. Cluster analysis revealed five genetically diverse clusters. Cluster I had 8 genotypes, cluster II had 9 genotypes, cluster III consisted of 12 genotypes, cluster IV had 6 genotypes and Cluster V consisted 5 genotypes. Cluster I had the greatest intra-cluster distance (2.500) whereas cluster V had the smallest intra-cluster distance (1.701). In the cluster V, one of the genotype Pant Lobia-2 exhibited the highest mean values for all the characters. The highest GCV and PCV was recorded by number of pods per plant (28.87, 29.19) followed by yield (q/ha) (28.72, 29.04). The higher value of phenotypic component compared to the corresponding genotypic component suggest that there was an environmental influence on the performance of the genotypes. Correlation studies revealed positive correlation between pod length, pods per cluster, seeds per pod and yield quintal per hectare. Path coefficient analysis showed the significant positive direct relationship between plant height, peduncle length, pod length, number of pods per cluster, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod with yield quintals per hectare. The results of the study showed that, out of the 40 genotypes evaluated, Pant Lobia-2 exhibited the best performance. It has attractive red bold seeds with 31% protein content. Therefore it can be used in grain cowpea breeding program.

Abstract:Abstract Zero hunger and good health could be realized by 2030 through effective conservation, characterization and utilization of germplasm resources 1 . So far, few chickpea ( Cicer arietinum ) germplasm accessions have been characterized at the genome sequence level 2 . Here we present a detailed map of variation in 3,171 cultivated and 195 wild accessions to provide publicly available resources for chickpea genomics research and breeding. We constructed a chickpea pan-genome to describe genomic diversity across cultivated chickpea and its wild progenitor accessions. A divergence tree using genes present in around 80% of individuals in one species allowed us to estimate the divergence of Cicer over the last 21 million years. Our analysis found chromosomal segments and genes that show signatures of selection during domestication, migration and improvement. The chromosomal locations of deleterious mutations responsible for limited genetic diversity and decreased fitness were identified in elite germplasm. We identified superior haplotypes for improvement-related traits in landraces that can be introgressed into elite breeding lines through haplotype-based breeding, and found targets for purging deleterious alleles through genomics-assisted breeding and/or gene editing. Finally, we propose three crop breeding strategies based on genomic prediction to enhance crop productivity for 16 traits while avoiding the erosion of genetic diversity through optimal contribution selection (OCS)-based pre-breeding. The predicted performance for 100-seed weight, an important yield-related trait, increased by up to 23% and 12% with OCS- and haplotype-based genomic approaches, respectively.

Abstract:Triticum aestivum is among the few species of crops which has been widely grown as a source of food. For seed quality trait analysis, wheat germplasm (77 genotypes) was collected from Pakistan's diverse agro-climatic regions. Significant variation ( p < 0.05) was observed for tested parameters among tested genotypes. Genotypes with maximum protein content, i.e., GA2002 (16.5%) and Marvi (16.5%), moisture content, i.e., advance line 9,244 (11%), starch content, i.e., AARI 2011 (54.1%), zeleny sedimentation rate, i.e., advance line 2006 (44ml), wet gluten content, i.e., advance line 2006 (44%), kernel weight, i.e., advance line TC-4928 (41.6 ± 9.5 mg), kernel diameter, i.e., sassui (2.91 ± 0.32 mm), kernel moisture, i.e., AUQAB 2000 (11.7 ± 0.4%), Mairaj 2000 (11.7 ± 0.4%), and Barani-83 (11.7 ± 0.3%), and hardness index, i.e., Punjab 2011 (91 ± 39) are concluded as potential candidates to be explored for bakery products and the breeding program to improve quality attributes of wheat. Data were also analyzed for correlation, agglomerative hierarchical clustering, and principal component analysis (PCA). Cluster analysis clustered all genotypes into five different groups. The D 2 statistics confirmed maximum diversity of cluster-V genotypes against genotypes of cluster-IV regarding single kernel characteristics, whereas cluster-II genotypes revealed maximum diversity against cluster-III genotypes relating to grain nutritional profile. The contribution of PC-I regarding single kernel characteristics toward variability was highest (48.58%) and revealed positive factor loadings for kernel weight, kernel diameter, and kernel moisture, while the contribution of PC-I with respect to grain nutritional profile toward variability was highest (59.76%) and showed positive factor loadings for moisture and starch content. Varieties having good quality attributes can be combined by breeders via various breeding methods with the aim of developing high quality wheat in the future.

Abstract:Climate change, depleting natural resources, declining arable land and sky-high population represent the main obstacles to the attainment of global food security. Therefore, to make a significant breakthrough in the food production and to combat global food insecurity, sustainable intensification of the agricultural production through low-input agriculture and development of cultivar with improved yield and adaptability is required. By traditional and modern plant breeding methods, breeding of pulses, cereals, and other important food crops, especially chickpea, can be accomplished by exploiting available genetic diversity. Chickpea and other pulse crops are important foods in many nations and play a vital role in the diet of malnourished populations world wide. Globally, chickpea is mainly grown in developing countries, accounting for ~97% of world area and 96% of world production. At present the average global yield of chickpea is 0.9 mt/ha, very low comparedto its estimated potential of 6 mt/ha under favorable growthconditions. The main constraints that limit desired goals of chick peaproductivity include low genetic variability, low and unstable yield and low resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Chickpea being a self-pollinated crop harbors low genetic variability. Mutation breeding is the logical tool to create variability in a crop species in a very short span of time, as compared to breeding methods. This chapter cover sorigin, classification, cytogenetics, germplasm and breeding methods for chickpea improvement.
Novel Alleles from Cicer reticulatum L. for Genetic Improvement of Cultivated Chickpeas Identified through Genome Wide Association Analysis

Abstract:The availability of wild chickpea (Cicer reticulatum L.) accessions has the potential to be used for the improvement of important traits in cultivated chickpeas. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the phenotypic and genetic variations of chickpea progeny derived from interspecific crosses between C. arietinum and C. reticulatum, and to establish the association between single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and a series of important agronomic traits in chickpea. A total of 486 lines derived from interspecific crosses between C. arietinum (CDC Leader) and 20 accessions of C. reticulatum were evaluated at different locations in Saskatchewan, Canada in 2017 and 2018. Significant variations were observed for seed weight per plant, number of seeds per plant, thousand seed weight, and plant biomass. Path coefficient analysis showed significant positive direct effects of the number of seeds per plant, thousand seed weight, and biomass on the total seed weight. Cluster analysis based on the agronomic traits generated six groups that allowed the identification of potential heterotic groups within the interspecific lines for yield improvement and resistance to ascochyta blight disease. Genotyping of the 381 interspecific lines using a modified genotyping by sequencing (tGBS) generated a total of 14,591 SNPs. Neighbour-joining cluster analysis using the SNP data grouped the lines into 20 clusters. The genome wide association analysis identified 51 SNPs that had significant associations with different traits. Several candidate genes associated with early flowering and yield components were identified. The candidate genes and the significant SNP markers associated with different traits have a potential to aid the trait introgression in the breeding program.

Anemoside A3-induced relaxation in rat renal arteries: role of endothelium and Ca2+ channel inhibition.

Abstract:Anemoside A(3), a lupane-type triterpenoid saponin, exists in the roots of Pulsatilla chinensis, but its pharmacological properties are largely unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying anemoside A(3)-induced relaxation in rat renal arteries. Changes of isometric force were determined on arteries with a myograph. Anemoside A(3) caused concentration-dependent relaxation in precontracted aortas, mesenteric, left coronary, and renal arteries. Removal of endothelium or treatment with charybdotoxin plus apamin slightly but significantly attenuated the relaxation in renal arteries. TEA(+) inhibited the relaxation caused by anemoside A(3) in renal arteries with and without endothelium while glibenclamide, BaCl(2), or capsaicin had no effect on it. Anemoside A(3) produced less relaxation in rings contracted by 60 mM KCl compared with rings contracted by receptor-dependent constrictors. It further inhibited contractions induced by Ca(2+) influx through nifedipine-sensitive voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels, nifedipine-insensitive receptor-operated Ca(2+) channels, and by intracellular Ca(2+) release. Pretreatment with nifedipine attenuated anemoside A(3)-induced relaxation. Taken together, the present results indicate that anemoside A(3) produces relaxation in rat renal arteries through multiple mechanisms. The release of CTX/apamin-sensitive endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor, stimulation of TEA(+)-sensitive K(+) channel, and inhibition of Ca(2+) influx jointly contribute to the relaxation.

Abstract:Chickpea is an inexpensive source of protein, minerals, and vitamins to the poor people living in arid and semi-arid regions of Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. New chickpea cultivars with enhanced levels of protein, Fe and Zn content are a medium-term strategy for supplying essential nutrients for human health and reducing malnutrition. In the current study, a chickpea reference set of 280 accessions, including landraces, breeding lines, and advanced cultivars, was evaluated for grain protein, Fe, Zn content and agronomic traits over two seasons. Using a mid-density 5k SNP array, 4603 highly informative SNPs distributed across the chickpea genome were used for GWAS analysis. Population structure analysis revealed three subpopulations (K = 3). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) was extensive, and LD decay was relatively low. A total of 20 and 46 marker-trait associations (MTAs) were identified for grain nutrient and agronomic traits, respectively, using FarmCPU and BLINK models. Of which seven SNPs for grain protein, twelve for Fe, and one for Zn content were distributed on chromosomes 1, 4, 6, and 7. The marker S4_4477846 on chr4 was found to be co-associated with grain protein over seasons. The markers S1_11613376 and S1_2772537 co-associated with grain Fe content under NSII and pooled seasons and S7_9379786 marker under NSI and pooled seasons. The markers S4_31996956 co-associated with grain Fe and days to maturity. SNP annotation of associated markers were found to be related to gene functions of metal ion binding, transporters, protein kinases, transcription factors, and many more functions involved in plant metabolism along with Fe and protein homeostasis. The identified significant MTAs has potential use in marker-assisted selection for developing nutrient-rich chickpea cultivars after validation in the breeding populations.
Genetic Diversity of Agronomic Traits in Global Cowpea Resource

Abstract:Seventeen agronomic traits of 768 cowpea resources which were collected from 58 countries or regions were analyzed with USDA standard method. Phenotypic polymorphism analysis shown that among all traits, the major accessions have white pod, semi-round smooth white seed with black eye seed-type and erect semi-prostrate plant-type with semi-hastate leaf. Variance analysis showed that there were no significant differences in grain shape, pod-position, pod placement and plant type among each geographic group. The variances of remaining traits were different in certain extent among each geographic group. Clustering analysis showed the geographical groups have certain difference with no significant. Among each group, commercial cultivars were obviously different from those in other groups with the highest pod number and the seed weight, the lowest coefficient of variation (CV) and genetic diversity. Accessions from Africa and Asia have the highest genetic diversity with close genetic relationship. Within North America and Latin America groups, the phenotypes were similar and have closer relations with South and Central Asian compare with other out-continent groups. Therefore it can be inferred that cowpea may originate from Africa and undergo second domestication in Asia, then move into the American colonies by colonial expansion.

Abstract:Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), an annual plant of the family Fabaceae is mainly grown in semiarid and temperate regions. Among pulses, cultivated worldwide chickpeas are considered an inexpensive and rich source of protein. Chickpea is a good source of protein and carbohydrate, fiber, and important source of essential minerals and vitamins. The quality of protein is better among other pulses. Consumption of chickpeas is related to beneficial health outcomes. Dietary peptides from the protein of chickpeas gaining more attention. Peptides can be obtained through acid, alkali, and enzymatic hydrolysis. Among all these, enzymatic hydrolysis is considered safe. Various enzymes are used for the production of peptides, i.e., flavorzyme, chymotrypsin, pepsin, alcalase, papain, and trypsin either alone or in combinations. Chickpea hydrolysate and peptides have various bioactivity including angiotensin 1-converting enzyme inhibition, digestive diseases, hypocholesterolemic, CVD, antioxidant activity, type 2 diabetes, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticarcinogenic activity. This review summarizes the nutritional composition and bioactivity of hydrolysate and peptides obtained from chickpea protein. The literature shows that chickpea peptides and hydrolysate have various functional activities. But due to the limited research and technology, the sequences of peptides are unknown, due to which it is difficult to conduct the mechanism studies that how these peptides interact. Therefore, emphasis must be given to the optimization of the production of chickpea bioactive peptides, in vivo studies of chickpea bioactivity, and conducting human study trials to check the bioactivity of these peptides and hydrolysate.

Abstract:Twenty diverse genotypes of chickpea including three checks viz., GNG 158, GNG 1488, PNG 469- checks, were carried out under Agriculture Research farm, Department of Genetics of Plant Breeding, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara (Punjab). This experiment was conducted in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications, during rabi 2021-2022. To estimate genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance percent of the mean. analysis of variance for the design of experiments has been present for all the twelve traits The analysis of variance estimation demonstrated that the mean sum of squares attributed to genotypes were significant for all of the characters, suggesting that there was enough genetic diversity among the genotypes. The current study found that the Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation (PCV) was greater than the corresponding Genotypic Coefficient of Variation (GCV) for all traits, which could be attributed to genotype-environment interaction to some degree or another, explaining environmental factors influencing the expression of these characters. In the present study, moderate PCV, GCV were observed in No. of secondary branches per plant, 100 seed weight, No. of primary branches per plant, Harvest index, biological yield per plant, No. of pods per plant, Plant height and Seed yield per plant. Low value of PCV and GCV were recorded in No. of seeds per pod, protein content, Days to maturity and Days to 50% flowering, shows the magnitude of PCV and GCV were low and indicating limited scope for improvement. The genotypic correlation coefficient was higher in magnitude than their corresponding phenotypic one, indicating there by strong inherent association between different traits studied. The phenotypic expression of correlation was less due to multiple influences of environmental components in the view of correspondence selection on phenotypic basis would be effective.

Abstract:Quality seed production of efficient strains can be valuable which are developed through breeding strategy at parental selection emphasizing the seed morphology and bio-molecular activity at germination initiation. The significant distinct variation in qualitative assessment of seed was observed exploited 20 Chickpea genotypes. The observable factors like seed length; breadth, L/B ratio, seed volume, 1000 seed weight, α-amylase activity as well as α-amylase rising rate were responsible to denote the selection approach. The genotype V8 (FLIP-171C) demonstrated eminence in seed length, L/B ratio, 1000 seed weight with occurrence of α-amylase rising rate though high genetic changeability was noticed among genotypes for all characters. Coefficient of variation offered a relative measure on variance among diverse characters. GCV was advanced (more than 20%) for seed length, L/B ratio of seed, seed volume, and 1000 seed weight. Greater heritability (H2 %) combined with better genetic advances (GA %) was detected for seed length, and 1000 seed weight. Furthermore, the considerable characters explained hopeful positive correlation with each other. Hence, these parameters were vital for considerable seed uniqueness and choice based on these qualities would be reliable for chickpea genotypes developed under West Bengal condition.

Abstract:Understanding the nutritional diversity in Perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) is essential for selecting and developing superior varieties with enhanced nutritional profiles in the North Eastern Himalayan (NEH) region of India. In this study, we assessed the nutritional composition of 45 diverse perilla germplasm collected from five NEH states using standard protocols and advanced analytical techniques. Significant variability was observed in moisture (0.39-11.67%), ash (2.59-7.13%), oil (28.65-74.20%), protein (11.05-23.15%), total soluble sugars (0.34-3.67%), starch (0.01-0.55%), phenols (0.03-0.87%), ferric reducing antioxidant power (0.45-1.36%), palmitic acid (7.06-10.75%), stearic acid (1.96-2.29%), oleic acid (8.11-13.31%), linoleic acid (15.18-22.74%), and linolenic acid (55.47-67.07%). Similarly, significant variability in mineral content (ppm) was also observed for aluminium, calcium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, sodium, nickel, phosphorus, and zinc. Multivariate analyses, including hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), revealed the enriched nutritional diversity within the germplasm. Correlation analysis indicated significant positive and negative relationships between nutritional parameters, indicating potential biochemical and metabolic interactions present in the perilla seeds. TOPSIS-based ranking identified promising genotypes for functional foods, pharmaceuticals, and nutritional applications. This study provides a first in-depth report of the nutritional composition and diversity of perilla germplasm in the NEH region, thus aiding in the identification of superior varieties for food and nutritional diversification and security.
