Abstract:Abstract It is challenging to develop a material which has low cost, high activity, good stability and recyclability under light exposure. Apart from these properties, the photocatalyst should also have good visible region absorbance and low electron-hole pair recombination rate. Keeping all this in view, we have designed a simple scalable synthesis of ZnO–ZnS heterostructures for the photocatalytic treatment of industrial waste ( p -nitrophenol and methyl orange). The ZnO–ZnS heterostructures are synthesized via a solvent-free route by thermal annealing of solid-state mixture of ZnO and thiourea (a sulphur source) which results in ZnO–ZnS core shell kind of heterostructure formation. The interface formation between the ZnO–ZnS heterostructure favored the band-gap reduction in comparison to the bare ZnO and ZnS nanoparticles. Further, these ZnO–ZnS heterostructures were utilized as a photocatalyst for the degradation of toxic phenolic molecules ( p -nitrophenol) and harmful organic dyes (methyl orange) present in the water under the light exposure (> 390 nm).
Efficient CeO2/ZnO Heterojunction for Enhanced Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Application

Abstract:Organic pollutants pose a significant challenge due to their toxicity and potential carcinogenicity, thereby posing a severe threat to the environment and human health. Heterogeneous photocatalysts offer promising advantages over traditional water purification methods due to their tunable electronic properties such as bandgap, easy separation from the reaction solution and formidable nanostructures. Herein, we prepare a CeO2/ZnO heterostructure via simple hydrothermal synthesis. The electronic structure of this nanocomposite was tuned to achieve a band gap of ∼2.94 eV, which was between the individual bandgaps of CeO2 and ZnO nanoparticles. In addition, the mixed valence character of Ce further enhanced the electronic properties of the CeO2/ZnO heterostructure. The photocatalytic performance of CeO2, ZnO and CeO2/ZnO heterostructure was evaluated and it was found that CeO2/ZnO heterostructure with a Zn/Ce ratio of 0.2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, where the degradation efficiency was 99.28 % after irradiation for 60 min. It was mainly ascribed to the heterojunction structure of the CeO2/ZnO nanocomposite, leading to a higher separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs and generating more superoxide radicals, which in turn improved the photocatalytic activity effectively.
Fabrication of ZnO/Au@Cu2O heterojunction towards deeply oxidative photodegradation of organic dyes

Abstract:Fabrication of heterojunction is an effective way of improving the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor in the photocatalytic wastewater treatment. ZnO/2O heterojunctions were successfully synthesised using Au nanoparticles loaded onto the surface of ZnO nanorods as heterostructural seeds to induce in situ growth of Cu2O shells. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical workstation and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrograph were employed to analyze the structures, compositions and photoelectric properties of the synthesised photocatalysts. After 45–90 min of the photocatalysis of ZnO/2O heterojunctions under simulated sunlight, the degradation efficiencies of methyl orange and rhodamine B could reach 93.0% and 99.6%, respectively, which were much higher than those with mono- and bi-component catalysts. The photocatalytic system with ZnO/2O can achieve deep mineralization to decompose organic dye molecules into non-toxic products. The formation of heterostructures not only could expand the spectral absorption range to the visible region but also efficiently facilitate charge separation to transfer more photo-generated holes and electrons to generate oxidative hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. A Z-scheme charge separation mechanism was proposed according to the determination of radical species and energy band structures of ZnO–Cu2O.

Abstract:ZnO-Cu2O composites were made as photocatalysts in a range of different amounts using an easy, cheap, and environment-friendly coprecipitation method due to their superior visible light activity to remove pollutants from the surrounding atmosphere. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) have demonstrated that ZnO-Cu2O catalysts are made of highly pure hexagonal ZnO and cubic Cu2O. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has confirmed that there is a substantial interaction between the two phases of the resultant catalyst. The optical characterizations of the synthesized ZnO-Cu2O composite were done via UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy. Due to the doping on ZnO, the absorption range of the ZnO-Cu2O catalyst is shifted from the ultraviolet to the visible region due to diffuse reflection. The degradation efficiency is affected by the Ratio of ZnO: Cu2O and ZnO-Cu2O composite with a proportion of 90:10 exhibited the most prominent photocatalytic activity on Acid Red 114, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.05032 min-1 that was 6 and 11 times greater than those of ZnO and Cu2O, respectively. The maximum degradation efficiency is 97 %. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite is caused by the synergistic interaction of ZnO and Cu2O, which improves visible light absorption by lowering band gap energy and decreasing the rate at which the electron-hole pairs recombine. The scavenging experiment confirmed that hydroxyl radical was the dominant species for the photodegradation of Acid Red 114. Notably, the recycling test demonstrated the ZnO-Cu2O photocatalyst was highly stable and recyclable. These results suggest that the ZnO-Cu2O mix might be able to clean up environmental pollutants when it meets visible light.
Influence of local structure on the location of antigenic determinants in tobacco mosaic virus protein.

Abstract:Early work on protein antigenicity led to the common belief that proteins possess a finite number of antigenic determinants located in accessible regions of the molecule's surface. This view is now changing. As a result of extensive studies, seven continuous epitopes have been located on tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) protein by measuring the antigenic activity of short peptides with anti-protein antibodies. The structure of the viral protein has been refined in Cambridge, enabling the Strasbourg workers to correlate the position of these epitopes with regions of high segmental mobility in the protein. Surface accessibility is not a sufficient condition for antigenicity, because six short peptides corresponding to accessible regions of the protein possess no antigenic activity. Recent work in Strasbourg shows that when longer peptides of TMV protein are used, more antigenic determinants are found and these lie in more structured regions of the protein (e.g. helices). In these cases the longer peptide may be folding up in solution to mimic part of the native structure.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures have emerged as efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solutions and industrial wastewaters. In this work, a simple and effective method is reported for the synthesis of zinc oxide/zinc hydroxide (ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 ) hybrid nanoparticles using a mineral acid to enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Infrared spectroscopy reveals the presence of hydroxyl groups in ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction shows the formation of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO nanoparticles, which retain their wurtzite structure after acid treatment but additional diffractions for Zn(OH) 2 are also recorded. The optical bandgap of resulting ZnO and ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 nanoparticles is reduced to 3.05 and 3.08 eV, respectively. In the initial photocatalysis experiments, ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 nanoparticles exhibit 3.5-times improved degradation and removal of sunset yellow dye, a model organic pollutant, from deionized water compared to pristine ZnO nanoparticles. Hence, for further studies, ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 coatings are fabricated on glass slides with a uniform surface morphology as shown by the atomic force microscopy. The time-dependent UV-visible spectroscopy reveals the photocatalytic degradation of sunset yellow over the surface of ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 coatings. The degradation reaction follows the pseudofirst-order mechanism with a rate constant of 2.9 × 10 –2 min −1 . The recyclability and stability experiments reveal the retention of appreciable photocatalytic activity of ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 coatings (with >92% degradation efficiency after six successive cycles). The results are compared with recent examples from the pertinent literature. The surface hydroxyl groups on ZnO/Zn(OH) 2 nanoparticles and bandgap lowering enhance the anchoring of dye molecules and electron transfer reactions.

Abstract:The photocatalytic process over semiconducting oxide surfaces has attracted worldwide attention as a potentially efficient, environmentally friendly, and low-cost method for wastewater treatment. This study presents a straightforward, inexpensive, and rapid route for the synthesis of nickel oxide (NiO) and its composites with zinc oxide (NiO/ZnO) and copper oxide (NiO/CuO) nanoparticles through the chemical precipitation method using capping agent-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for photocatalytic degradation of the methylene blue dye. The structure, morphology, and elemental constituents were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The energy band gap of pure NiO, NiO-ZnO, and NiO-CuO composites was evaluated using the Tauc plot from absorption spectra and resulted as 3.00, 2.90, and 3.25 eV, respectively. The optimum parameters for all photocatalysts were the following: pH 8, irradiation time 175 min, catalyst amount 75 mg, and dye concentration 7 mg/L. At these optimum parameters, the degradation efficiency of the prepared photocatalysts toward the MB dye achieved was 89.8% for NiO, 97% for NiO/ZnO, and 94.2% for NiO/CuO. The highest activity of the p-type/n-type (NiO/ZnO) nanocomposite for MB degradation is possibly due to electron–hole pair recombination inhibition by charge transfer processes. Therefore, semiconducting composite-based nanocatalysts such as NiO/ZnO with high photocatalytic activity are promising for future industrial applications to remove undesirable organic pollutants from the environment.

Abstract:Highlights: • Hydrothermal synthesis of pristine ZnO, ZnO/rGO binary nanocomposites (BNCs) and ZnO/rGO/Au ternary nanocomposites (TNCs). • Small Au nanocubes and multifaceted pentagonal ZnO nanostructures wrinkled on the sheet of rGO in ternary nanocomposites. • Investigation of lattice parameters of pristine ZnO nanostructures, ZnO/rGO, and ZnO/rGO/Au nanocomposites. • Enhanced sunlight-driven photocatalysis by ZnO/rGO/Au TNCs as nanocatalysts. • Photoexcited electrons of Au NPs surface migrate to the conductive rGO layers through ZnO conduction band. The combination of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) incorporated ZnO/rGO heterostructures is unique for sunlight-driven photocatalysis (SPC). Here, hydrothermally synthesized pristine ZnO nanostructures (NSs), ZnO/rGO binary nanocomposites (BNCs) and ZnO/rGO/Au ternary nanocomposites (TNCs) of bandgap ( E g ) values 3.56 eV, 3.37 eV and 3.17 eV, respectively are reported. These NSs are analyzed optically, structurally and morphologically via UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and SEM techniques, respectively. The SPC of methylene blue (MB) organic dye was considered using all three samples. The slow charge transfer over grain boundaries of ZnO results in the prohibition of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, exhibiting low photodegradation efficiency (87 %). However, in BNCs the creation of alternative pathway of the carriers due to low work function level of rGO as compared to ZnO enhances the charge separation with an increased photocatalytic efficiency (92 %). In contrast, TNCs show rather fast photodegradation efficiency (96 %) as the photoexcited electrons on Au NPs surface migrate to the CB of ZnO because of the SPR stimulation of Au. These electrons easily shift to the conductive rGO layers and react with oxygen species (O 2 ) producing superoxide radicals (•O 2 – ). Thus, TNCs sample has appeared to be auspicious candidate for the photodegradation of organic pollutants in untreated water.

Highly effective visible-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and simultaneous organic pollutant degradation over an urchin-like oxygen-doped MoS2/ZnIn2S4 composite

Abstract:Achieving hydrogen production and simultaneous decomposition of organic pollutants through dual-functional photocatalytic reactions has received increasing attention due to the environmentally friendly and cost-effective characteristics of this approach. In this work, an urchin-like oxygen-doped MoS2/ZnIn2S4 (OMS/ZIS) composite was fabricated for the first time using a simple solvothermal method. The unique microstructure with abundant active sites and fast charge transfer channels further shortened the charge migration distance and compressed carrier recombination. The obtained composite exhibited an efficient H2 evolution reaction rate of 12.8 mmol/g/h under visible light, which was nearly times higher than pristine ZnIn2S4, and the apparent quantum efficiency was 14.9% (420 nm). The results of the simultaneous photocatalytic H2 evolution and organic pollutant decomposition test were satisfactory, resulting in decomposition efficiencies of resorcinol, tetracycline, and bisphenol A that reached 41.5%, 63.5%, and 53.0% after 4 h, respectively, and the highest H2 evolution rate was 672.7 µmol/g/h for bisphenol A. Furthermore, natural organic matter (NOM) abundantly found in actual water was adopted as an electron donor for H production under simulated sunlight irradiation, indicating the promising practicability of simultaneous hydrogen evolution and NOM decomposition. Moreover, the mechanisms of the dual-purpose photocatalytic reactions, as well as the synergistic effect between the molecular structures of the organic pollutants and the corresponding adsorption behavior on the photocatalyst surface were illustrated in detail. These obtained results may serve as an inspiration for the rational design of highly efficient, dual-functional photocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:The objective of the present work is to develop a simple route for synthesis of visible light active ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 type-II heterojunction photocatalysts with improved photodegradation performance. The g-C 3 N 4 is synthesized by single step thermolysis method, whereas, ZnO and ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 type-II heterojunction photocatalysts with different (10, 15, and 20 wt%) loading of ZnO are synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The structural, morphological and optical properties are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence characterizations. The synthesized photocatalysts are used to degrade the rhodamine B (RhB) dye under 35 W Xe light lamp. The photocatalytic activity is investigated in detail via different experiments like effect of pH, trapping of reactive oxygen species (ROS), cyclic stability test, etc. The ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 type-II heterojunction photocatalysts with 15 wt% loading of ZnO (15ZG) shows the best photodegradation performance with 0.52 min −1 degradation rate constant and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) as major ROS. Further, it exhibits highest degradation rate in acidic medium (pH = 3) with its point of zero charge value 2.54 and possesses good cyclic stability with high activity (91% after 5 cycles). In addition, the photocurrent measurement study is conducted to explore the concept of capability of charge separation and transportation processes across the heterojunction. A photodegradation mechanism involved in the said activity is presented. The 15ZG heterojunction photocatalyst is very much capable for water purification applications.

Abstract:Novel and versatile photocatalysts that can work under direct sunlight are in high demand especially for mitigating water contamination. Some of the burgeoning pollutants in water are textile dyes, organic molecules, pharmaceutical products etc. In view of their extensive use, polymers wastes such as microplastics in water bodies are a new cause of concern. Using direct sunlight for the degradation of such pollutants needs the development of solar photocatalysts. We report on a novel next-generation solar-photocatalyst, consisting laddered-heterojunction formed between Co 2+ - substituted zinc-ferrite core & zinc-oxide shell, to harvest full-solar-spectrum in scavenger-free photodegradation of dyes, pharmaceuticals and microplastics. Using in-house developed protocols and Microwave-assisted-solvothermal-technique (MAST), nanospheres of ∼20-40nm were synthesized first followed by ZnO shell growth in a controlled manner (∼80-180nm) to obtain the core-shell photocatalyst nanospheres using another microwave approach. The absorption of the photocatalyst could be extended upto 852 nm by judiciously doping with Co 2+ - enabling the utilization of UV-Vis-NIR region of sunlight. As evident from the valence band spectra, the Co 2+ substitution introduced free electrons in the conduction band of ZnFe 2 O 4 that resulted in the formation of laddered type-1 heterojunction. With the optimized Co 2+ content and ZnO-shell thickness, solar-photocatalytic degradation of Methyl-Orange enhanced 6-&12-times respectively. Complete degradation of antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin (CF), Norfloxacin (NF), and Ofloxacin (OF) under direct sunlight was achieved within an hour. This unusual enhanced activity was attributed to the inclusion of Co 2+ , conducive band positions leading to higher absorption and reduced recombination. We also showed the degradation of polypropylene microfibers used in face masks to combat the COVID-19 outbreak could also be degraded., indicating their potential to combat microplastic pollution. Our novel photocatalyst holds promise for sunlight-assisted degradation of a wide range of hazardous pollutants.

Abstract:A Z-scheme Cd0.85Zn0.15S/Co9S8 (CZS-CS) photocatalyst was reasonably fabricated by a simple solvothermal method for the effective visible-light-driven H2 evolution and organic pollutants degradation. The precise construction of the CZS-CS composites provided an efficient heterogeneous contact interface and abundant reaction sites for the proposed photocatalytic reaction. The homogeneous Co9S8 nanocrystals were uniformly wrapped on the surface of Cd0.85Zn0.15S nanorods, forming an intimate-contact interface, markedly contributed to the light collection and effectively inhibited the charge-carrier recombination. The optimized CZS-CS-15 composites exhibited a special H2 production rate reaching 19.15 mmol·h−1·g−1, roughly 1915 and 4.5 times of pure Co9S8 and Cd0.85Zn0.15S samples and 85% of tetracycline (TC) molecule within 15 min was degraded. Furthermore, trapping experiments confirmed that h+ was the main active species for TC photodegradation. Moreover, the obtained photocatalysts manifested stability without apparent activity declines during the proposed reactions. Finally, the Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was verified to illustrate the characteristics of efficient charge transfer and high redox ability. This study provided a rational and learnable strategy for designing dual-functional Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized a novel ZnO/CoS 2 S-scheme heterojunction and used it as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and as a photocatalyst for the reduction of chromium (VI) and the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The prepared samples were thoroughly characterized to determine their crystal structure, elemental, and chemical composition, morphological features as well as optical and charge transfer properties. Compared to ZnO and CoS 2 alone, the ZnO/CoS 2 nanocomposite showed significantly improved photocatalytic activity. Several factors, such as larger surface area, heterojunction construction, separation, and effective migration of photoinduced charge carriers, were involved in the improvement of the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/CoS 2 nanocomposite. The material also exhibited excellent OER operation with a low onset potential and a low Tafel slope. Durability studies showed that the electrocatalyst exhibited successful catalytic OER activity even after 1000 cycles without significant changes in current density and onset potential. In addition, the study proposed a possible photocatalytic mechanism based on analysis and quenching experiments. It was also found that the ZnO/CoS 2 nanocomposite exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency in a mixture of TC and Cr(VI) environment due to a synergistic effect between Cr(VI) and TC. Finally, the evaluation of the double-layer capacitance of the ZnO/CoS 2 electrocatalyst showed that the electrochemically active surface was suitable for redox reactions.

Solid-State Synthesis of ZnO/ZnS Photocatalyst with Efficient Organic Pollutant Degradation Performance

Abstract:To improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers in ZnS, constructing a ZnS-based heterostructure with ZnO is assessed to be an efficient strategy, and a ZnO/ZnS photocatalyst was prepared by a solid-phase approach, and the structure and morphology were systematically studied. The ZnO/ZnS photocatalyst showed excellent photocatalytic properties on methyl orange, rhodamine B and tetracycline under UV light irradiation, indicating that the photocatalyst exhibited efficient broad-spectrum photocatalytic performance. Compared with ZnS, the degradation rates of ZnO/ZnS photocatalysts for methyl orange, rhodamine B and tetracycline under UV light increased from 21%, 9% and 32% to 96%, 94% and 93%, respectively, higher than the reported ZnO/ZnS composites synthesized by a novel wet chemical route, attributing to the improvement of light absorption ability and the effective separation of carriers. In addition, the influence of the sacrificial agent on the reaction system was investigated, and the synergistic mechanism of ZnO and ZnS in the catalytic process was analyzed according to the fluorescence spectra, photocurrent and first-principles calculation results, and a possible catalytic mechanism was put forward.

Abstract:Advance oxidative process is an efficient method to photocatalytically degrade the effluent pollutant of organic dyes with suitable catalyst. The photocatalysts with heterojunction not only improve the excitation efficiency of the catalyst in presence of light by broadening the wavelength range of absorption, but also reduce the rate of recombination. ZnO and TiO2 were successfully synthesized in this study via solution combustion synthesis. Wurtzite ZnO was grown along with anatase TiO2 to create heterojunction of ZnO-TiO2 and Co loading was carried out to facilitate the rate of electron transfer between the heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic activity. The photo generated electrons are injected from the conduction band of ZnO to TiO2 via Co to create •O2- and holes from TiO2 to form OH• that help degrading the Alizarin S. The detailed photocatalytic experiment confirmed Co/ZnO-TiO2 as an extremely efficient catalyst that shows a complete degradation of the dye Alizarin S in just 40 minutes under UV light illumination.

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of organic pollutants in water sources necessitates the development of efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts for their degradation. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely studied for their photocatalytic properties; however, their application is hindered by low photocatalytic efficiency and high recombination rates of photogenerated carriers. This manuscript explores the enhanced photocatalytic performance of intercalated ZnO/SiO 2 nanocomposites (NCs), synthesized through a combination of co-precipitation and Stöber methods, as a solution to these challenges. A comprehensive analysis of the structural, optical elemental and Morphological properties of both ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO 2 NCs was conducted using various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–Vis spectrometry and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Through, XRD analysis, the calculated crystallite sizes of ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO2 NCs were found to be 36 nm and 39 nm respectively. TEM images illustrated that the ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO2 NCs have crystallized in elongated spherical morphology. XPS and FTIR analyses provided the signature band details the presence of Cu and Si in their Zn 2 + and Si4+ oxidation states. The optical bandgap energies were calculated to be 3.38 eV for ZnO NPs and 3.22 eV for ZnO/SiO2 NCs. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO/SiO 2 NCs achieved an impressive degradation rate of 92 % for Rhodamine B (RhB), compared to a relatively lower rate of 81 % for pure ZnO NPs for the degradation of RhB under visible light due to its lower bandgap, high surface area, and lower electron-hole recombination rate. BET surface area measurements revealed that ZnO nanoparticles have a surface area of 11.234 m 2 /g, while ZnO/SiO2 NCs show 57.118 m 2 /g, highlighting SiO2's enhancement. The NCs demonstrated exceptional reusability for degradation, sustaining high efficiency across multiple cycles. Its ability to scavenge superoxide radicals highlighted the effectiveness of the ZnO/SiO2 NCs in environmental remediation, especially for wastewater treatment.

Solar-Energy-Driven Cu-ZnO/TiO2 Nanocomposite Photocatalyst for the Rapid Degradation of Congo Red Azo Dye

Abstract:This study effectively demonstrates the sonochemical synthesis of visible-light-responsive Cu-ZnO/TiO2 ternary Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposite photocatalyst. The as-prepared photocatalyst was comprehensively characterized by techniques including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and elemental dot mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The photocatalytic activity of the Cu-ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalyst was assessed for the degradation of Congo red (CR), an azo dye, under direct sunlight. The pseudo-first-order rate constant for CR degradation was found to be 0.09 min−1. The outcome implies that the synthesised nanocomposite photocatalyst demonstrates excellent photocatalytic activity under direct sunlight as 98% degradation of CR dye was achieved in approximately 20 min using the Cu-ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalyst. Furthermore, its high recoverability and reusability of five times indicate its excellent catalytic potential.

Abstract:Developing synergistic systems and taking environmental risks into account are two necessary aspects of being considered to remove persistent organic pollutants efficiently. Thus, a combined catalytic system uniting the Fenton-like process and simulated solar-light photocatalysis has been constructed. Moreover, a series of NiCo2O4/HP-UiO-66 catalysts (yNiCo-DUx) were also fabricated to improve tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency. The NiCo2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs) were synthesised using one-step calcination. The Z-scheme structure of the catalysts was confirmed by ESR, XPS, DRS, time-resolved PL (TR-PL) spectra and the quenching experiments. The NiCo2O4 nanoparticles could be embedded and fixed into the defects of the MOF structure, and the leaching of toxic metals was also significantly suppressed. In the optimal reaction condition with 15NiCo-DU50, sunlight, and peroxymonosulfate (PMS), the total removal efficiency of TC could reach 98.5% within 8 min of irradiation, and the highest % RSE could reach 11.2%. Moreover, the corresponding reaction rate was 28.7, 3.6 and 1.3–10.2 times higher than photocatalysis, Fenton-like processes and other catalysts. Furthermore, the possible degradation mechanism, generation of reactive species and PMS excitation pathways were also investigated in depth. The present study sheds light on the fabrication of HP-MOFs based catalysts and the combination of various methods to eliminate organic pollutants.

Abstract:Domestic wastage and liquid discharge from industries cause serious water pollution and severely damage the life cycle of living species. Therefore, it is necessary to construct efficient photocatalysts for the removal of toxic pollutants from water. Herein, a novel heterostructure ZnWO–ZnCeS nanocomposite was prepared by the sol-gel route and studied its physical and photocatalytic properties using various analytical techniques. Under sunlight irradiation, the ZnWO–ZnCeS photocatalyst eliminated 99.7, 99.1, 99.0 % rhodamine-B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and safranin-O (SO) dyes within 70 min with excellent performance higher than individual ZnWO and ZnCeS catalysts. The optimization tests exhibit the catalyst loading = 30 mg, dye content = 25 ppm, solution pH = 8 of ZnWO–ZnCeS against MB dye for practical application. The heterojunction of coupled ZnWO and ZnCeS leads to a synergistic effect that facilitates the charge transport and hampers the recombination of photo-induced charge carriers thereby leading to boosted photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, based on the scavenging test, the hydroxyl and superoxide radicals were the reactive species during the photodegradation reaction. The designed photodegradation reaction mechanism has proposed the formation of an S-scheme in ZnWO–ZnCeS that led to the accumulation of electrons at ZnCeS and holes at ZnWO, favoring the formation of reactive species for dye degradation. Moreover, this work provides a novel direction to synthesize S-scheme heterostructure photocatalysts for application in wastewater treatment.
