Abstract:As a popular robot path planning algorithm, RRT (Rapid-exploring Random Tree) and various RRT-based extensions have achieved remarkable results. However, existing algorithms rely too much on randomness and often do not make use of known map information, this makes the growth of trees too blind. To this end, we introduce Bidirectional Homotopy-Guided RRT (BH-RRT) that combines Bidirectional RRT (Bi-RRT) with information obtained from obstacle contours. Compared with the previous methods, BH-RRT can reflect most of the map's information with a small number of feature points, and then form a set of points. This set can provide a better local goal point in each iteration, so that the tree can grow in a more favorable direction, rather than only being affected by the goal point. Experimental results show that BH-RRT outperforms RRT, HRRT and Bi-RRT in the success rate within a limited time.
Research on Autonomous Vehicle Path Planning Algorithm Based on Improved RRT* Algorithm and Artificial Potential Field Method

Abstract:For the RRT* algorithm, there are problems such as greater randomness, longer time consumption, more redundant nodes, and inability to perform local obstacle avoidance when encountering unknown obstacles in the path planning process of autonomous vehicles. And the artificial potential field method (APF) applied to autonomous vehicles is prone to problems such as local optimality, unreachable targets, and inapplicability to global scenarios. A fusion algorithm combining the improved RRT* algorithm and the improved artificial potential field method is proposed. First of all, for the RRT* algorithm, the concept of the artificial potential field and probability sampling optimization strategy are introduced, and the adaptive step size is designed according to the road curvature. The path post-processing of the planned global path is carried out to reduce the redundant nodes of the generated path, enhance the purpose of sampling, solve the problem where oscillation may occur when expanding near the target point, reduce the randomness of RRT* node sampling, and improve the efficiency of path generation. Secondly, for the artificial potential field method, by designing obstacle avoidance constraints, adding a road boundary repulsion potential field, and optimizing the repulsion function and safety ellipse, the problem of unreachable targets can be solved, unnecessary steering in the path can be reduced, and the safety of the planned path can be improved. In the face of U-shaped obstacles, virtual gravity points are generated to solve the local minimum problem and improve the passing performance of the obstacles. Finally, the fusion algorithm, which combines the improved RRT* algorithm and the improved artificial potential field method, is designed. The former first plans the global path, extracts the path node as the temporary target point of the latter, guides the vehicle to drive, and avoids local obstacles through the improved artificial potential field method when encountered with unknown obstacles, and then smooths the path planned by the fusion algorithm, making the path satisfy the vehicle kinematic constraints. The simulation results in the different road scenes show that the method proposed in this paper can quickly plan a smooth path that is more stable, more accurate, and suitable for vehicle driving.

Abstract:This paper proposes a random tree algorithm based on a potential field oriented greedy strategy for the path planning of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Potential-field-RRT (PF-RRT) discards the defect of traditional artificial potential field (APF) algorithms that are prone to fall into local errors, and introduces potential fields as an aid to the expansion process of random trees. It reasonably triggers a greedy strategy based on the principle of field strength descending gradient optimization, accelerating the process of random tree expansion to a better region and reducing path search time. Compared with other optimization algorithms that improve the sampling method to reduce the search time of the random tree, PF-RRT takes full advantage of the potential field without limiting the arbitrariness of random tree expansion. Secondly, the path construction process is based on the principle of triangle inequality for the root node of the new node to improve the quality of the path in one iteration. Simulation experiments of the algorithm comparison show that the algorithm has the advantages of fast acquisition of high-quality initial path solutions and fast optimal convergence in the path search process. Compared with the original algorithm, obtaining the initial solution using PF-RRT can reduce the time loss by 20% to 70% and improve the path quality by about 25%. In addition, the feasibility of PF-RRT for UAV path planning is demonstrated by actual flight test experiments at the end of the experiment.

Abstract:In recent decades, Rapidly-exploring Random Tree star(RRT*) with asymptotic optimality has attracted much attention in path planning algorithm, but it suffers from slow convergence. Hence to solve the drawback, this paper proposes a novel Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) trajectory planning in cluttered environments based on PF-RRT* algorithm with goal-biased strategy. It creates a novel parent node for the new node near the obstacle by dichotomy method, instead of updating the parent node in the existing random tree nodes, which considerably decreases the path cost. The improved artificial potential field(APF) is proposed to guide the growth of the random tree towards the target point by adding random point attraction, target point attraction and obstacle repulsion, which not only addresses the local minimum problem, but also boosts the search rate of the random tree. The algorithm proposed in this paper combines with goal-biased strategy to obtain higher quality sampling points during the sampling process. Finally, the simulation verifies that the proposed algorithm is greatly optimized in terms of the number of iterations, convergence rate and path cost.

Abstract:In recent decades, RRT* algorithm has attracted much attention because of its asymptotic optimization. However, the RRT* algorithm still suffers from slow convergence rate and large randomness of search range. To overcome the shortcomings of this algorithm, this paper proposes UAV trajectory planning based on bi-directional APF-RRT* algorithm with goal-biased. Firstly, goal-biased strategy is used to guide the generation of random sampling points, and two mutually alternating random search trees are established by the bi-directional RRT* algorithm to perform the search, thus increasing the convergence rate of the algorithm. Secondly, the number of iterations is greatly reduced by incorporating an modified artificial potential field method into the bi-directional growth tree. In the process of smoothing the paths, a cubic spline interpolation algorithm is applied to optimize the paths to obtain the best trajectory. The combination of the two algorithms improves the direction of new node generation and reduces the path cost. Finally, the algorithm of this paper is compared with Informed-RRT*, Bi-RRT* and improved P-RRT* algorithms, and it enhances the search performance of the growing tree.

Abstract:This paper proposed an improved potential rapidly exploring random tree star (P-RRT*) algorithm for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The algorithm has faster expansion and convergence speeds and better path quality. Path planning is an important part of the UAV control system. Rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) is a path-planning algorithm that is widely used, including in UAV, and its altered body, P-RRT*, is an asymptotic optimal algorithm with bias sampling. The algorithm converges slowly and has a large random sampling area. To overcome the above drawbacks, we made the following improvements. First, the algorithm used the direction of the artificial potential field (APF) to determine whether to perform greedy expansion, increasing the search efficiency. Second, as the random tree obtained the initial path and updated the path cost, the algorithm rejected high-cost nodes and sampling points based on the heuristic cost and current path cost to speed up the convergence rate. Then, the random tree was pruned to remove the redundant nodes in the path. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm could significantly decrease the path cost and inflection points, speed up initial path obtaining and convergence, and is suitable for the path planning of UAVs.

Abstract:The rapidly exploring random tree star (RRT*) algorithm is widely used to solve path planning problems. However, the RRT* algorithm and its variants fall short of achieving a balanced consideration of path quality and safety. To address this issue, an improved discretized artificial potential field-QRRT* (IDAPF-QRRT*) path planning strategy is introduced. Initially, the APF method is integrated into the Quick-RRT* (Q-RRT*) algorithm, utilizing the attraction of goal points and the repulsion of obstacles to optimize the tree expansion process, swiftly achieving superior initial solutions. Subsequently, a triangle inequality-based path reconnection mechanism is introduced to create and reconnect path points, optimize the path length, and accelerate the generation of sub-optimal paths. Finally, by refining the traditional APF method, a repulsive orthogonal vector field is obtained, achieving the orthogonalization between repulsive and attractive vector fields. This places key path points within the optimized vector field and adjusts their positions, thereby enhancing path safety. Compared to the Q-RRT* algorithm, the DPF-QRRT* algorithm achieves a 37.66% reduction in the time taken to achieve 1.05 times the optimal solution, and the IDAPF-QRRT* strategy nearly doubles generated path safety.

Abstract:During the last decade, RRT* algorithm has been widely concerned by researchers because of its asymptotic optimality. However, the slow convergence rate of the RRT* algorithm leads to poor quality of the optimal paths at small number of iterations. Meanwhile, searching the initial path slowly limits its application scenarios. To overcome these problems, a directionally biased variable step APF-RRT* (DBVS-APF-RRT*) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a novel directionally biased variable step sampling strategy is used in RRT* algorithm to quickly generate the initial path. Then, global random sampling and key region sampling strategies are added to improve global search ability and optimal path quality. At the same time, an artificial potential field (APF) method is introduced to improve the ability of obstacle avoidance. In addition, we propose a pruning strategy based on triangular inequality with direct connection of goal points to reduce the number of redundant nodes and shorten the path length. Finally, DBVS-APF-RRT* algorithm is compared with RRT*, Bias-RRT*, Informed-RRT* and Bias-P-RRT* algorithms to verify its superiority of optimal path quality, stability of the algorithm and its rapidity of finding the initial path.

Abstract:Given that the rapidly exploring random tree algorithm (RRT) and its variants cannot efficiently solve problems of path planning of autonomous vehicles, this paper proposes a new, adaptive improved RRT algorithm. Firstly, an adaptive directional sampling strategy is introduced to avoid excessive search by reducing the randomness of sampling points. Secondly, a reasonable node selection strategy is used to improve the smoothness of the path by utilizing a comprehensive criterion that combines angle and distance. Thirdly, an adaptive node expansion strategy is utilized to avoid invalid expansion and make the generated path more reasonable. Finally, the expanded ellipse is used to realize vehicle obstacle avoidance in advance, and the post-processing strategy removes redundant line segments of the initial path to improve its quality. The simulation results show that the quality of the planned path is significantly improved. This path followed successfully has good trajectory stability, which shows the proposed algorithm’s effectiveness and practicability in autonomous vehicles’ local path planning.

Abstract:Recently, the path planning has become one of the key research hot issues in the field of autonomous vehicles, which has attracted the attention of more and more related researchers. When RRT (Rapidly-exploring Random Tree) algorithm is used for path planning in complex environment with a large number of random obstacles, the obtained path is twist and the algorithm cannot converge quickly, which cannot meet the requirements of autonomous vehicles’ path planning. This paper presents an improved path planning algorithm based on RRT algorithm. Firstly, random points are generated using the circular sampling strategy, which ensures the randomness of the original RRT algorithm and improves the sampling efficiency. Secondly, an extended random point rule based on cost function is designed to filter random points. Then consider the vehicle corner range when choosing the adjacent points, select the appropriate adjacent points. Finally, the B-spline curve is used to simplify and smooth the path. The experimental results show that the quality of the path planned by the improved RRT algorithm in this paper is significantly improved compared with the RRT algorithm and the B-RRT (Bidirectional RRT) algorithm. This can be seen from the four aspects of the time required to plan the path, mean curvature, mean square deviation of curvature and path length. Compared with the RRT algorithm, they are reduced by 55.3 %, 68.78 %, 55.41 % and 19.5 %; compared with the B-RRT algorithm, they are reduced by 29.5 %, 64.02 %, 39.51 % and 11.25 %. The algorithm will make the planned paths more suitable for autonomous vehicles to follow.

Abstract:The Rapidly Exploring Random Tree Star (RRT*) is a probabilistically complete algorithm. It is recognized as a better path planning algorithm, but its path quality and path planning speed still have room for improvement. This paper proposes an improved RRT* algorithm based on alternative paths and triangular area sampling (ATS-RRT*). The alternative paths strategy generates multiple initial paths based on whether the sample points can communicate with the target points and set the path with the smallest cost as the final initial path, which can speed up the initial path planning and improve the initial path finding rate. The triangular area sampling strategy combines every three adjacent nodes to generate some triangle areas and corresponding half-triangle areas. The path quality can be improved quickly by limiting the sampling in these triangle areas. In addition, the direct connection strategy with triangle nodes and the tabu table using in the Rewire process also speeds up the algorithm. Experiments show that the speed of finding the initial path and the success rate of finding the suboptimal path are improved by 2.3 and 1.45 times respectively compared with RRT*, Quick-RRT*, and Informed + Quick-RRT*. Abstract:With the increasing utilization of sampling-based path planning methods in the field of mobile robots, the RRT* algorithm faces challenges in complex indoor scenes, including high sampling randomness and slow convergence speed. To tackle these issues, this paper presents an improved RRT* path-planning algorithm based on the generalized Voronoi diagram with an adaptive bias strategy. Firstly, the algorithm leverages the properties of the generalized Voronoi diagram (GVD) to obtain heuristic paths, and a sampling region with target bias is constructed, increasing the purposefulness of the sampling process. Secondly, the node expansion process incorporates an adaptive bias strategy, dynamically adjusting the step size and expanding direction. This strategy allows the algorithm to adapt to the local environment leading to improved convergence speed. To ensure the generation of smooth paths, the paper employs the cubic spline curve interpolation algorithm for trajectory optimization to ensure that the mobile robotic can obtain the best trajectory. Finally, the proposed algorithm is experimentally compared with existing algorithms, including the RRT* and Informed-RRT* algorithms, to verify the feasibility and stability.

Abstract:To address the shortcomings of the classical RRT (Rapidly exploring Range Tree) path planning algorithm, such as long planning time and path curvature in some narrow and complex environments, an improved APG-RRT (Adaptive Path Guide RRT) algorithm is proposed. First, a guiding path is introduced in the sampling stage, and a node on the preset guiding path is selected first to expand the node tree so as to guide the algorithm to plan the exploration process. Secondly, the selection weight of the loading guidance path is dynamically adjusted according to the probability of collision between obstacles during the exploration process, and a safe and feasible path point is generated in the path expansion stage by combining the expansion information of the obstacles. Finally, in the path post-processing stage, combined with the vehicle kinematic constraints, the triangular inequality method is used to remove redundant path points, making the path more smooth, so as to fulfill the specific operational needs of the vehicle. The results of the simulation experiment demonstrate that the suggested method exhibits superior planning efficiency compared to the previous algorithm, resulting in a higher quality final path. At the same time, the verification of the algorithm's feasibility and effectiveness is conducted through real car testing.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved APF-GFARRT* (artificial potential field-guided fuzzy adaptive rapidly exploring random trees) algorithm based on APF (artificial potential field) guided sampling and fuzzy adaptive expansion is proposed to solve the problems of weak orientation and low search success rate when randomly expanding nodes using the RRT (rapidly exploring random trees) algorithm for disinfecting robots in the dense environment of disinfection operation. Considering the inherent randomness of tree growth in the RRT* algorithm, a combination of APF with RRT* is introduced to enhance the purposefulness of the sampling process. In addition, in the context of RRT* facing dense and restricted environments such as narrow passages, adaptive step-size adjustment is implemented using fuzzy control. It accelerates the algorithm's convergence and improves search efficiency in a specific area. The proposed algorithm is validated and analyzed in a specialized environment designed in MATLAB, and comparisons are made with existing path planning algorithms, including RRT, RRT*, and APF-RRT*. Experimental results show the excellent exploration speed of the improved algorithm, reducing the average initial path search time by about 46.52% compared to the other three algorithms. In addition, the improved algorithm exhibits faster convergence, significantly reducing the average iteration count and the average final path cost by about 10.01%. The algorithm's enhanced adaptability in unique environments is particularly noteworthy, increasing the chances of successfully finding paths and generating more rational and smoother paths than other algorithms. Experimental results validate the proposed algorithm as a practical and feasible solution for similar problems.

An Innovative Path Planning Algorithm for Complex Obstacle Environments with Adaptive Obstacle Density Adjustment: AODA-PF-RRT*

Abstract:To address the limitations of low node utilization and inadequate adaptability in complex environments encountered by Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithms during the expansion phase, this study presents an enhanced path planning algorithm—AODA-PF-RRT* (Adaptive Obstacle Density Adjustment-PF-RRT*). The proposed algorithm implements a random extension strategy for nodes that fail collision detection, thereby improving node efficiency. Furthermore, it dynamically partitions the area surrounding sampling points and calculates local obstacle density in real time. By leveraging this density information, the algorithm flexibly adjusts both the number of expansion points and the dichotomy threshold, significantly enhancing its responsiveness to environmental changes. We rigorously demonstrate the algorithm's probabilistic completeness and asymptotic optimality. Simulation and benchmarking results demonstrate that the AODA-PF-RRT* algorithm not only generates smooth and high-quality paths compared to existing algorithms but also maintains low computational costs in complex environments, showcasing exceptional stability and robustness.

Abstract:PurposeThe goal of this research is to develop a dynamic step path planning algorithm based on the rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) algorithm that combines Q-learning with the Gaussian distribution of obstacles. A route for autonomous vehicles may be swiftly created using this algorithm.Design/methodology/approachThe path planning issue is divided into three key steps by the authors. First, the tree expansion is sped up by the dynamic step size using a combination of Q-learning and the Gaussian distribution of obstacles. The invalid nodes are then removed from the initially created pathways using bidirectional pruning. B-splines are then employed to smooth the predicted pathways.FindingsThe algorithm is validated using simulations on straight and curved highways, respectively. The results show that the approach can provide a smooth, safe route that complies with vehicle motion laws.Originality/valueAn improved RRT algorithm based on Q-learning and obstacle Gaussian distribution (QGD-RRT) is proposed for the path planning of self-driving vehicles. Unlike previous methods, the authors use Q-learning to steer the tree's development direction. After that, the step size is dynamically altered following the density of the obstacle distribution to produce the initial path rapidly and cut down on planning time even further. Abstract:The existing variants of the rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) cannot be effectively applied in local path planning of the autonomous vehicle and solve the coherence problem of paths between the front and back frames. Thus, an improved heuristic Bi-RRT algorithm is proposed, which is suitable for obstacle avoidance of the vehicle in an unknown dynamic environment. The vehicle constraint considering the driver's driving habit and the obstacle-free direct connection mode of two random trees are introduced. Multi-sampling biased towards the target state reduces invalid searches, and parent node selection with the comprehensive measurement index accelerates the algorithm's execution while making the initial path gentle. The adaptive greedy step size, introducing the target direction, expands the node more effectively. Moreover, path reorganization minimizes redundant path points and makes the path's curvature continuous, and path coherence makes paths between the frames connect smoothly. Simulation analysis clarifies the efficient performance of the proposed algorithm, which can generate the smoothest path within the shortest time compared with the other four algorithms. Furthermore, the experiments on dynamic environments further show that the proposed algorithm can generate a differentiable coherence path, ensuring the ride comfort and stability of the vehicle.

The APS-RRT planner can reach a feasible path quickly using the proposed adjustable probability and sampling area strategies, while the optimizer applies the Dijkstra algorithm to prune and improve the initial path generated by the APS-RRT planner and smooths-out sharp nodes based on the interpolation method. A series of experiments are conducted to demonstrate that our method can perform much better in terms of the balance between the computing cost and performance.

Abstract:Obstacle avoidance path planning capability, as one of the key capabilities of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to achieve safe autonomous flight, has always been a hot research topic in UAV research filed. As a commonly used obstacle avoidance path planning algorithm, RRT (Rapid-exploration Random Tree) algorithm can carry out obstacle avoidance path planning in real time and online. In addition, it can obtain the asymptotically optimal obstacle avoidance path on the premise of ensuring the completeness of probability. However, it has some problems, such as high randomness, slow convergence speed, long transit time, and curved flight trajectory, so that it cannot meet the flight conditions of the actual UAV. To solve these problems, the paper proposes an improved RRT algorithm. In the process of extending the random tree, ACO (ant colony optimization) is introduced to make the planning path asymptotically optimal. The optimized algorithm can set pheromones on the path obtained by RRT and select the next extension point according to the pheromone concentration. And then through a certain number of iterations, it converges to an ideal path scheme. In addition, this paper also uses MATLAB to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the algorithm: Although RRT is easy to fall into local optimization, since the optimization method in this paper can almost certainly converge to the optimal solution, when it is necessary to preplan the path before UAV takeoff, it can be used.

Abstract:Abstract This paper studies the autonomous path planning of unmanned vehicles in a known driving environment. The path planning algorithm used is a hybrid algorithm combining bidirectional fast random search tree and artificial potential field method. On the basis of introducing the principle of the two algorithms, an improved algorithm combining Bi-RRT and artificial potential field is proposed. In order to reflect the advantages of the improved algorithm, the traditional RRT and Bi-RRT algorithms are simulated and compared in Matlab.
