Abstract:A long-range ordered lamellae-within-lamellae hierarchical structure is reported for the first time through the directed self-assembly of supramolecular polymer-surfactant thin films on chemical patterns with density multiplication. Abstract:Reversibly photo-cross-linkable pH-responsive block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly((2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-4-methyl-[7-(methacryloyl)oxyethyloxy] coumarin)) (PEO-b-P(DEA-co-CMA)) was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Block copolymer nanogels could be easily prepared by first photo-cross-linking of the micelles at pH>7 and then adjusting the solution to pH<7. The photo-cross-linking was proved to be reversibly controlled under alternative irradiation of UV light at 365nm and 254nm. As a result, the cross-linking degrees and sizes of the nanogels can be easily controlled by alternatively UV light irradiation. Finally, the nanogels can serve as nanoreactors for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. The protonated DEA units were first coordinated with HAuCl4, and then the electrostatically bounded AuCl4− anions were reduced to gold nanoparticles by NaBH4. The nanogel-supported gold nanoparticles were used in chemical catalysis. The pH-responsive photo-cross-linked nanogels have been characterized using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis spectra and 1H NMR spectroscopy measurements, respectively.
Reversible Assembly and Disassembly of Gold Nanoparticles Directed by A Zwitterionic Polymer

Abstract:Herein, we have successfully introduced the stimuli-response concept into the controllable synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with designed properties. We used a pH-responsive zwitterionic polymer that acted as a template and a stabilizer. Gold colloids prepared in situ from the polymer solution have a narrow size distribution of about 5 nm. The assembly and disassembly of AuNPs can be finely tuned by modulating the net charges of the zwitterionic polymer so that they are either positive or negative as a function of the solution pH. Different aggregates and colors appear on altering the solution pH. In acidic solutions, gold colloids form large symmetrical aggregates, while the AuNPs disperse in solutions with a pH approximate to 9.6. However, as the solution pH increases (> 9.6), needle-like aggregates with a small interparticle distances are formed. On the basis of TEM, SEM, H-1 NMR and UV/Vis measurements, we attribute pH-triggered aggregation and color changes of the gold colloids to the ionization process and conformational change of the polymer. The ionization process governs the choice of ligand anchored on the surface of AuNPs, and the conformational change of the polymer modulates the interspaces between AuNPs. The present approach, which is based on a rational design of the physicochemical properties of the template used in the synthesis process, provides a powerful means to control the properties of the nano-material. Furthermore, the colorimetric readout can be visualized and applied to future studies on nanoscale switches and sensors.
Two-dimensional assembly of gold nanoparticles grafted with charged-end-group polymers

Abstract:Hypothesis: Introducing charged terminal groups to polymers that graft nanoparticles enables Coulombic control over their assembly by tuning the pH and salinity of aqueous suspensions. Experiments: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) terminated with CH3 (charge-neutral), COOH (negatively charged), or NH2 (positively charged) groups. The nanoparticles are characterized using dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Liquid surface X-ray reflectivity (XR) and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) techniques are employed to determine the density profile and in-plane structure of the AuNP assembly across and on the aqueous surface. Findings: The assembly of PEG-AuNPs at the liquid/vapor interface can be tuned by adjusting pH or salinity, particularly for COOH terminals. However, the effect is less pronounced for NH2 terminals. These distinct assembly behaviors are attributed to the overall charge of PEG-AuNPs and the conformation of PEG. The COOH-PEG corona is the most compact, resulting in smaller superlattice constants. The net charge per particle depends not only on the PEG terminal groups but also on the cation sequestration of PEG and the intrinsic negative charge of the AuNP surface. NH2-PEG, due to its closeness to overall charge neutrality and the presence of hydrogen bonding, enables the assembly of NH2-PEG-AuNPs more readily.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple approach to produce self-assembly of nanocomposites of gold nanoparticles with a supramolecular block copolymer formed by a fan-shaped small molecule L and polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) through hydrogen bonding. Hybrids PS-b-P4VP(L)(n), where n is the molar ratio of L to 4VP, were obtained by blending the polymer PS-b-P4VP, the small molecule L, and gold nanoparticles. With the use of the supramolecular approach, chemical modification of either the nanoparticle or the polymer is unnecessary. The organization of Au nanoparticles with controlled inter-particle distance and ordering was realized by changing the value of n. In addition, a hierarchical structure-within-structure morphology was observed for one of the hybrids, Au/PS-b-P4VP(L)(1.0), in which the Au/P4VP(L)(n) domains form a hexagonal packing stabilized by nano-phase separation. The hybrids self-assemble into sphere, lamella, or cylinder structures, which were characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The contents of both L and Au NPs can affect the type and size of the self-assembled structure.

Abstract:Stable gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are synthesized in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) by using amphiphilic multiblock copolymer (P4VP–PS–P4VP)n containing multiple trithiocarbonate moieties or amphiphilic triblock copolymer (HS–P4VP–PS–P4VP–SH) with thiol end groups as protecting agents. Only isolated gold nanoparticles are obtained, which indicate that the multiple functional groups of a single polymer chain are grafted at the same time to the same nanoparticle. The sizes of the AuNPs are slightly increased with raising the concentration of gold salt for a given concentration of the copolymers, leading to the red shift of the surface plasmon resonance of the AuNPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and scanning force microscopy (SFM) images confirm that the AuNPs are indeed wrapped by the block copolymers. With the amphiphilic characteristic of the block copolymers, the AuNPs can be successfully transferred from DMF into aqueous solution. An unexpected red shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the AuNPs after solvent transfer is observed, which is mainly attributed to the dense protecting polymer layers on the surfaces of the AuNPs in aqueous solutions. Both the size and structure of nanoparticles are maintained after solvent transfer. The AuNPs in aqueous solutions can be stable for a wide range of pH value up to pH≈9. At strong basic condition with pH>10, the AuNPs will aggregate. The effect of pH value on the stability of the AuNPs is reversible. The optical property of the AuNPs also slightly depends on the pH value.

Abstract:The core-shell polystyrene (PS)/poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) composite microgels with pH sensitivity were synthesized via two-step polymerization method. Au nanoparticles were supported onto pH sensitivity composite microgels via in situ reduction of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) using NaBH4 as reduction agent and sodium citrate as stabilizer. The results demonstrated that the plasmonic coupling of gold nanoparticles could be regulated, and the diffusion of reactive substrates availably controlled, due to the shrinkage and swelling performance of the shell chains under the different acid and alkali conditions. The optical property and catalytic activity of Au NPs could be regulated by changing the micro-environment of composite microgels. Therefore, the performance of composite materials could be realized the pH-controllable.

Abstract:Homopolymers of poly[N‐(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl) acrylamide] exhibit the ability to adsorb onto the surface of preformed or growing gold nanoparticles. The resulting hybrid materials possess a pH and thermo‐sensitive nature. Consequently, their optical properties can be modulated by manipulating either the temperature or the pH. Moreover, introducing monomers based on poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) into block or random statistical polymers enables further modulation of the thermosensitive properties. These copolymers, employed for the in‐situ synthesis and/or stabilization of gold nanoparticles, lead to hybrid materials whose properties and/or particle size depend on the polymer composition and microstructure: statistical polymers emerge as superior stabilizing agents compared to their block counterparts at a constant composition.

Abstract:Self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is an essential tool for constructing structured materials with a wide range of applications. However, achieving ordered assembly structures with externally programmable properties in binary NP systems remains challenging. In this work, we assemble binary inorganic NPs into hierarchically pH-responsive alternating copolymer-like nanostructures in an aqueous medium by engineering the interparticle electrostatic interactions. The polymer-grafted NPs bearing opposite charges are viewed as nanoscale monomers ("nanomers"), and copolymerized into alternating nano-copolymers (ANCPs) driven by the formation of interparticle "bonds" between nanomers. The resulting ANCPs exhibit reversibly responsive "bond" length (i.e., the distance between nanomers) in response to the variation of pH in a range of ~7-10, allowing precise control over the surface plasmon resonance of ANCPs. Moreover, specific interparticle "bonds" can break up at pH ≥ 11, leading to the dis-assembly of ANCPs into molecule-like dimers and trimers. These dimeric and trimeric structures can reassemble to form ANCPs owing to the resuming of interparticle "bonds", when the pH value of the solution changes from 11 to 7. The hierarchically responsive nanostructures may find applications in such as biosensing, optical waveguide, and electronic devices.

Abstract:We report on a robust approach to the size-selective and template-free synthesis of asymmetrically functionalized ultrasmall (<4 nm) gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) stably anchored with a single amphiphilic triblock copolymer chain per NP. Directed NP self-assembly in aqueous solution can be facilely accomplished to afford organic/inorganic hybrid micelles, vesicles, rods, and large compound micelles by taking advantage of the rich microphase separation behavior of the as-synthesized AuNP hybrid amphiphilic triblock copolymers, PEO-AuNP-PS, which act as the polymer metal polymer analogue of conventional amphiphilic triblock copolymers. Factors affecting the size-selective fabrication and self-assembly characteristics and the time-dependent morphological evolution of NP assemblies were thoroughly explored.

Abstract:The design of tunable dynamic self-assembly of nanoparticles with switchable assembled dimensions and morphologies is a challenging goal whose realization is vital for the evolution of smart nanomaterials. Herein, we report on chitosan polymer as an effective supramolecular glue for aldehyde-modified Au nanoparticles to reversibly modulate the states of self-assembled nanocomposites. By simultaneous integration of dynamic covalent Schiff base interactions and noncovalent hydrogen bonds, the chitosan/Au nanocomposites could reversibly transform their assembled morphologies from one-dimensional nanowires to three-dimensional nanosponges in response to the variation of pH value. Moreover, the obtained nanosponges could be used as an efficient pH-controlled cargo release system.

Abstract:In situ synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) in polyelectrolytes multilayers (PEMs) has recently gained much attention. Due to the versatility of their composition, PEMs offer a unique opportunity to synthesize a variety of NPs. So far, mostly cationic precursors have been used and only few studies have investigated the possibility of using amine groups to bind anionic precursors. Here, we use exponentially growing poly(l-lysine)/hyaluronan (PLL/HA) films as a nanoreservoir to bind and sequester aurochlorate (AuCl4-) anions thanks to the large number of free amine groups. The polypeptide–polysaccharide reactive template enabled the formation in a spatially-confined environment of gold NP at a very high yield. The synthesized gold NPs were homogenous and well-dispersed in the nanocomposite. Importantly, there was no particular effect of the film-ending layer (either PLL or HA). The largest particles of ∼9nm and the largest amount of gold were obtained at acidic pH of 3. When the pH was increased, smaller and more numerous NPs were synthesized but the total amount of gold was lower. Based on UV–visible spectrometry, FTIR and TEM data, we finally propose a scheme for the mechanism of gold NPs formation, in which several groups of PLL and HA contribute to the binding of gold ions, the nucleation and growth of NPs, and their stabilization in the “bulk” of the film.

Abstract:Owing to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), dynamic manipulation of optical properties through the structure evolution of plasmonic nanoparticles has been intensively studied for practical applications. This paper describes a novel method for direct reversible self-assembly and dis-assembly of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) in water driven by pH stimuli. Using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as the capping ligand and pH-responsive agent, the APTES hydrolyzes rapidly in response to acid and then condenses into silicon. On the contrary, the condensed silicon can be broken down into silicate by base, which subsequently deprotonates the APTES on AuNPs. By controlling condensation and decomposition of APTES, the plasmonic coupling among adjacent AuNPs could be reversible tuned to display the plasmonic color switching. This study provides a facile and distinctive strategy to regulate the reversible self-assembly of AuNPs, and it also offers a new avenue for other plasmonic nanoparticles to adjust plasmonic properties via reversible self-assembly.
A Facile Approach to Prepare Hybrid Nanoparticles with Morphology Controlled by the Thickness of Glyco-Shell

Abstract:Herein, we designed a novel amphiphilic triblock glycopolymer poly(oligo(ethyleneglycol) methacrylate)-block-poly(maltopyranoside methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (POMA-b-PMal-b-PS) via the combination of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and post-polymerization modification. The micelles with core–shell–corona structures were prepared by direct self-assembly of this glycopolymer in water. We found that these micelles can be used in in situ formation and stabilization of AuNPs. By controlling the thickness of glyco-shell, we successfully obtained Janus particles and raspberry-like particles with AuNPs in the sugar shell.

Abstract:Polymeric supramolecular assemblies provide a simple and versatile approach to fabricate specific nanostructures and functional nanocomposites in recent years. However, only few supramolecular assembly morphologies, in most cases, micelles and vesicles, have been reported. Herein, novel bowl- and porous sphere-shaped supramolecular assemblies were prepared by self-assembly of a supramolecular copolymer which was formed through end group ionic interaction between hydrophilic poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) with amino end groups (PMPC-NH2) and hydrophobic polystyrene with carboxyl end groups (PSt-COOH). Furthermore, it is interesting to find that the electrostatic induced supramolecular assemblies possess great potential for further functionalization at the ionic combining interfaces. Gold nanoparticles with a weak positive charge on their surface were assembled in a series of supramolecular assemblies. It was important to note that the gold nanoparticles were preferentially located at the inner interface of the supramolecular assemblies, bowls, porous spheres and others. The present method might be promising to extend to other supramolecular and nanoparticle systems to build spatial distribution precisely controlled nanoparticle–polymer composites.

Abstract:Arrays of nanoparticle (NP) clusters with controlled architectures show broad applications in nanolasers, sensors, and photocatalysis, but the fabrication of these arrays on substrates remains a grand challenge. This review presents a highly effective polymer-based strategy for the process-directed self-assembly of binary polyelectrolyte-grafted NPs (PGNPs) bearing opposite charges into stable colloidal molecules (CMs) on substrates via electrostatic interactions. The coordination number (x) of ABx CMs can be tuned by adjusting the pH or ionic strength of the solution or by employing different combinations of PGNPs with varying charge densities. Large-area CMs with diverse structures ranging from AB to AB7 can be constructed on substrates in high yields. This approach is applicable to PGNPs with different cores of NPs. This assembly strategy offers a useful tool for the fabrication of structurally precise assemblies on substrates with broad applications.
Assembling Biocompatible Polymers on Gold Nanoparticles: Toward a Rational Design of Particle Shape by Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have received great attention in a number of fields ranging from the energy sector to biomedical applications. As far as the latter is concerned, due to rapid renal clearance and a short lifetime in blood, AuNPs are often encapsulated in a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) matrix owing to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. A better understanding of the PLGA polymers on the AuNP surface is crucial to improve and optimize the above encapsulation process. In this study, we combine a number of computational approaches to explore the adsorption mechanisms of PLGA oligomers on a Au crystalline NP and to rationalize the PLGA coating process toward a more efficient design of the NP shape. Atomistic simulations supported by a recently developed unsupervised machine learning scheme show the temporal evolution and behavior of PLGA clusterization by tuning the oligomer concentration in aqueous solutions. Then, a detailed surface coverage analysis coupled with free energy landscape calculations sheds light on the anisotropic nature of PLGA adsorption onto the AuNP. Our results prove that the NP shape and topology may address and privilege specific sites of adsorption, such as the Au {1 1 1} crystal planes in selected NP samples. The modeling-based investigation suggested in this article offers a solid platform to guide the design of coated NPs.

Abstract:Here we report the self-assembly of heteroarm core-shell polymeric nanoparticles (HCPNs) into spherical superparticles and Synthesis of gold nanoparticles within the HCPNs and the superparticles. HCPNs with polystyrene (PS)/poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) as the heteroarms and the cross-linked network poly(4VP-co-divinylbenzene) as the core were synthesized via a two-step anionic polymerization method. In the first step, living PS chains were prepared by initiating styrene using n-butyllithium in THF. In the second step, copolymerization of 4VP and DVB was initiated by the living PS chains. The HCPNs thus prepared have two features in the structure. (1) The HCPNs are large (the average hydrodynamic radius < R-h > of the HCPNs in DMF is 111 nm, whereas < R-h > of reported heteroarms star polymers are less than 10 nm) and flexible when they are dispersed in the solvents such as DNF and acidic water. (2) The PS arms are designed to be considerably longer than the P4VP arms. These two features led to interesting behaviors of the HCPNs in both the common solvent and the selective solvents for the heteroarms. In DMF, the common solvent, the HCPNs were swollen and with a < R-h > of 111 nm. In toluene, the selective solvent for PS, the longer PS arms shielded the short insoluble P4VP chains so that the HCPNs were individually dispersed with a < R-h > of 80 nm; the short P4VP arms collapsed, and the core shrank. In acidic water, which is a selective solvent for the shorter P4VP arms, the HCPNs self-assembled into large spherical superparticles with an average < R-h > of 187 nm. The above-mentioned two structural features are thought necessary for the regular self-assembly of such large and isotropic HCPNs. Furthermore, both HCPNs in toluene and the superparticles in acidic aqueous solution were used as templates to prepare gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). When HCPNs in toluene were used as the template, the Au NPs with a size of ca. 2-7 nm were scattered at the periphery of the cross-linked cores, forming raspberry-like morphology. When the superparticles were used as the template, the morphology of AuNP/superparticle composite nanoparticles depended on the solvent composition. In 0.1 M aqueous HCl solution, Au NPs were located at the periphery of the superparticles, forming gold shells with a thickness of ca. 50 nm. However, in 0.1 M HCl aqueous solution/DMF mixed solvent (9:1, v/v), the HAuCl4 precursor could penetrate into the P4VP domains within the superparticles, forming dendron-like Au NP clusters within the template after the reduction.
Self-assembled PHEA-based block copolymers for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles

Abstract:In this work, cholesteryl chloroformate (Chol) and cholic acid (CA) were conjugated into six-arms star-shaped poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) polymers. These molecules were randomly attached to the hydroxyl groups of the PHEA. The first block of PHEA contains around 2% of cholesterol and 13% of cholic acid. The resulting star (PHEA-co-PChol-co-PCA)6 copolymers were then extended by further addition of HEA to form a second block. The copolymers self-assembled in an aqueous solution (DH between 10-14 nm, by DLS). Next, these small aggregates were used to prepare in situ AuNPs without an additional reducing agent. The metallic nanoparticles were obtained in solution for four to six hours at 70 °C. The formation of AuNPs was only observed when the second block was long enough, between 120 to 180 repetitive units of HEA per arm. FE-SEM images show spherical nanoparticles, triangles, and pentagonal/hexagonal shapes. Only spherical nanoparticles were obtained by increasing the polymer concentration. The gold nanoparticles were obtained and kept stable from a polymer concentration of 0.5 g/L. Interestingly, with the increase in polymer concentration, the intensity of the absorption band of the AuNPs decreases noticeably. Furthermore, the reducing capacity of PHEA homopolymers was demonstrated in obtaining AuNPs. The development of nanosystems with small size and improved stability makes them promise for future research.

Abstract:Assemblies of nanoparticles possess extensive potentials for various applications due to their unique properties. These properties are significantly related to the morphology (size, shape) and spatial positioning of nanoparticles. To meet the needs of different application fields, it is important to tune the structures of assemblies in a controllable way. Currently, the morphology control and assembly of nanoparticles are generally conducted in two separate steps, which cannot resolve the contradiction between the need of sufficient surface charge for stabilizing nanoparticles and the necessity of overcoming the electrostatic repulsion during self-assembly process. In this study, a simple one-pot method to fabricate assembled gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) films with tunable morphologies is proposed. AuNPs are synthesized and self-assembled simultaneously at cyclohexanone–water interface. The cyclohexanone in this system not only reduces the chloroauric acid solution to form AuNPs, but also establishes an oil–water interface with low interface energy, which can capture the AuNPs effectively for forming an ordered array. Furthermore, the morphologies of AuNPs are manipulated by simply tuning pH of the chloroauric acid solution. The fabricated AuNPs films with different morphologies are demonstrated to be applicable for surface enhanced Raman scattering detection, catalytic monitoring, and sensing.
