Abstract:Based on the local sound speed measurement model,the acoustic propagation model and the local acoustic pressure measurement model,the approach of ocean acoustic data assimilation suitable to shallow water environments is discussed.In this approach,according to the optimality principle,the a priori knowledge of the local sound speed and acoustic pressure fields is combined with the acoustic propagation model,which effectively improves the precision in the parameter estimation.To validate the approach,the sound speed field in shallow water expressed by empirical orthogonal functions and the geo-acoustic parameters are estimated via a numerical implementation of this approach using the experimental sound velocity measurement data and the effects of different model errors on the prccision in the parameter estimation are analyzed.The approach discussed in the paper gives a novel idea for acoustic tomography in shallow water.

Abstract:Model-based signal processing methods, such as matched-field processing, are concerned with exploiting the combination of the sound propagation physics in an ocean waveguide and the observation data. As such, they require accurate knowledge of the ocean acoustic environment. This paper presents an approach of environmental inversion via acoustic data assimilation (ADA), intended specifically to reconstruct the sound-speed field perturbed by linear internal waves. It exploits a variety of information sources, including direct local sound-speed measurements, an internal wave model, a full field acoustic propagation model, and acoustic pressure measurements. Compared to the previous work on ADA, four important improvements have been made: 1) a linear internal wave model is included; 2) a more realistic shallow-water environment from the Shelf Break PRIMER 1996 experiment is considered in the numerical simulations; and 3) effect of the sediment on acoustic propagation is considered in the inversion algorithm. The results further demonstrate the validity of the ADA approach.

Abstract:The ocean acoustic tomographic (OAT) approach to sound speed field estimation is generalized to include a variety of sources of information of interest such as an oceanographic model of the sound speed field, direct local sound speed measurements, and a full field acoustic propagation model as well as measurements. The inverse problem is presented as a four-dimensional field estimation problem using a variational approach commonly used in oceanographic data assimilation. The current OAT approach is shown to be a special case of the general framework. The matched-field tomography (MFT) approach is also discussed within this context. A simple implementation of this novel approach is then investigated in the absence of a suitable oceanographic model, and acoustic propagation is accounted for using a standard parabolic equation model. The inverse equations derived are validated numerically through a simple inversion example, and some issues on environmental mismatch and computations are discussed. The developments then provide a basic framework for ongoing data-model melding in acoustically focused oceanographic sampling (AFOS) network.

Abstract:Coastal acoustic tomography can perform a realtime field observation, and can be an important supplement to the Marine Ranch Observation. In this paper, a short range experiment has been conducted in ZhaiRuo Island, ZhouShan on January 20,2019. Four acoustic stations sent signals to each other to obtain the travel time of the signal between stations. ADCP and CTD were used to collect reference data. The horizontal velocity fields are mapped by inversion. The range-average currents calculated by inversion and travel time difference are close, and the inversion results are almost the same as the velocities obtained by ADCP. Vloume transports are also proved to reach balance by calculating flow rates of upper 2m crossing perpendicularly to the peripheral paths. Experiments show the feasibility of the coastal acoustic tomography to observe small area.

Short-Range Water Temperature Profiling in a Lake with Coastal Acoustic Tomography.

Abstract:Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT), as an innovative technology, can perform water temperature measurements both in horizontal and vertical slices. Investigations on vertical slice observations are significantly fewer in number than horizontal observations due to difficulties in multi-path arrival peak identification. In this study, a two-station sound transmission experiment is carried out in Thousand-Island Lake, Hangzhou, China, to acquire acoustic data for water temperature profiling. Time windows, determined by range-independent ray simulation, are used to identify multi-path arrival peaks and obtain corresponding sound wave travel times. Special attention is paid to travel time correction, whose errors are caused by position drifting by more than 2 m of moored stations. The sound speed and temperature profiling are divided into four layers and are calculated by regularized inversion. Results show a good consistency with conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) measurements. The root mean square error (RMSE) of water temperature is 0.3494, 0.6838, 1.0236 and 1.0985 °C for layer 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The fluctuations of measurement are further smoothed by the moving average, which decreases the RMSE of water temperature to 0.2858, 0.4742, 0.7719 and 0.9945 °C, respectively. This study illustrates the feasibility and high accuracy of the coastal acoustic tomography method in short-range water temperature measurement. Furthermore, 3D water temperature field profiling can be performed with combined analyzing in horizontal and vertical slices.

Abstract:Nowadays, Long sequences observations and modeling of artificial upwelling area is the key research direction in artificial upwelling. The traditional single point observations are not representative to the artificial upwelling region where environmental parameters are uneven distribution or change is complex. In order to obtain real-time, continuous and large-scale flow rate and temperature distribution. It is proposed to use acoustic tomography for artificial upwelling area measurements. Compared with the traditional methods of ocean observation, ocean acoustic tomography can carry out wide-range and long-term simultaneous observation with much less equipment. The utilization of ocean acoustic tomography technology shall provide great potential advantages and applications. In order to improve the time resolution and signal to noise ratio, the sound wave signal will use maximum length sequence. the CAT system is consist of GPS receiver, internal clock digital, signal processor unit, digital-to-analog conversion unit, power amplifier unit, signal amplification/filtering unit, receiver/transmitter switch unit, PC and 30KHz transducer. All of the parts are installed in a waterproof box expect transducer and external PC.

Abstract:Mapping small-scale high-precision velocity fields is of great significance to oceanic environment research. Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT) is a frontier technology used to observe large-scale velocity field in the horizontal slice. Nonetheless, it is difficult to observe the velocity field using the CAT in small-scale areas, specifically where the flow field is complex such as ocean ranch and artificial upwelling areas. This paper conducted a sound transmission experiment using four 50 kHz CAT systems in the Panzhinan waterway. Notably, sound transmission based on the round-robin method was recommended for small-scale CAT observation. The travel time between stations, obtained by correlation of raw data, was applied to reconstruct the horizontal velocity fields using Tapered Least Square inversion. The minimum net volume transport was 8.7 m3/s at 12:32, 1.63% of the total inflow volume transport indicating that the observational errors were acceptable. The relative errors of the range-average velocity calculated by differential travel time were 1.54% (path 2) and 0.92% (path 6), respectively. Moreover, the inversion velocity root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) were 0.5163, 0.1494, 0.2103, 0.2804 and 0.2817 m/s for paths 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, respectively. The feasibility and acceptable accuracy of the CAT method in the small-scale velocity profiling measurement were validated. Furthermore, a three-dimensional (3-D) velocity field mapping should be performed with combined analysis in horizontal and vertical slices.

Abstract:The ocean is a complicated hydro-dynamic system, showing various interdisciplinary processes of multiple interactive scales. Such processes as internal waves, eddies, and fronts make the ocean acoustic environment drastic changes in time and space. Understanding and modeling physical-acoustical processes are essential for ocean acoustic applications as well as ocean field prediction and parameter estimation. The acoustic data assimilation (ADA), which melds instant observed data of different natures and various physical models, has recently been developed as a new technique for forecasting both ocean and acoustic fields. The general framework of ADA includes three major parts: (1) an observational network for data measurements; (2) a suite of interdisciplinary ocean physics models and the sound propagation model; and (3) data assimilation schemes. Hence it is expected to provide ocean acoustic predictions with higher resolution and better accuracy, compared to those only using the observation data or the physics model. In this paper, we discuss the concepts and framework required to develop the coupled physics-acoustical data assimilation schemes, and review some typical ADA systems and their filed-testing results. It is shown that both the theory and related experiments are advancing steadily.

Abstract:High-resolution observations from moorings and transect data can provide new insights into ocean structures, their variability, and the downstream effects on acoustic operations. Previously, we established a framework to maintain optimal communication and navigation for small-scale, under-ice operations that focused on spatio-temporal variability in the upper water column and around an autonomous underwater vehicle. However, mid- and deep-water sound speed fidelity are crucial for larger operations that exploit convergence zone ranging. The Irminger Sea is a useful case study for understanding how sound speed uncertainty, whether from partial data or models, obscures the informational content from acoustics. Generally, the density gradient dominates the sound speed at depth. In the Irminger Sea, hydrographic variability comes from the advection of different water masses through the region at all depths and also from water mass modification by local air-sea interaction. Instead of a uniform gradient as a result of hydrostatic loading, a shifted gradient in the mid-water column and a negative gradient near the bottom are often observed in mooring and transect data. This talk presents initial results for understanding the impacts of the environment through the lens of impact on acoustic propagation. [Work supported by the Office of Naval Research]

Overflow waters in the western Irminger Sea modify deep sound speed structure and convergence zone propagation

Abstract:Deep sound speed structure in the western Irminger Sea is found to be highly dynamic in comparison to the adiabatic (uniform) sound speed gradient underpinning data assimilation and modeling efforts around the globe. A beamed source parabolic equation model is used to illustrate how the resulting non-uniform sound speed structure at 1 to 1.5 km in depth and sound speed inversion near the seafloor produce observable effects on acoustic signals between a shallow source and shallow vertical line array at convergence zone ranges. Beamforming analysis shows that a uniform sound speed gradient leads to “ideal” interference patterns that do not capture or represent modeled convergence zone properties, such as location, strength, and sharpness. Overall findings suggest that in situ information about sound speed below 1 km is necessary for low frequency, long-range propagation studies, particularly in areas of complex thermohaline circulation.

Abstract:Ocean sound speed is important for underwater acoustic applications, such as communications, navigation and localization, where the assumption of uniformly distributed sound speed profiles (SSPs) is generally used and greatly degrades the performance of underwater acoustic systems. The acquisition of SSPs is necessary for the corrections of the sound ray propagation paths. However, the inversion of SSPs is challenging due to the intricate relations of interrelated physical ocean elements and suffers from the high costs of calculations and hardware deployments. This paper proposes a novel sound speed inversion method based on multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and machine learning, which adapts to large-scale sea regions. Firstly, the datasets of SSPs are generated utilizing the Argo thermohaline profiles and the empirical formulas of the sound speed. Then, the SSPs are analyzed utilizing the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) to reduce the dimensions of the feature space as well as the computational load. Considering the nonlinear regression relations of SSPs and the observed datasets, a general framework for sound speed inversion is formulated, which combines the designed machine learning models with the reduced-dimensional feature representations, multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and water temperature data. After being well trained, the proposed machine learning models realize the accurate inversion of the targeted ocean region by inputting the real-time ocean environmental data. The experiments verify the advantages of the proposed method in terms of the accuracy and effectiveness compared with conventional methods.

Abstract:A through-the-sensor method to sense the local sound speed profile (SSP) using measured acoustic wave numbers via an array of hydrophones is proposed. Ocean sounds can be treated as acoustic energy trapped as discrete modes within the water column. A Fredholm integral equation of the first kind relates the linearized (perturbative) sound speed corrections to the wave number differences between the measured values and those calculated from an acoustic kernel. Thus, a method to exploit environmental information deduced from different in situ sonar systems is proposed. Though this inversion can be unstable and non-unique, recent improvements in sparse inversions can lead to robust estimates even without an accurate starting SSP. An iterative algorithm using multiple acoustic frequencies is beneficial to achieve convergence and stability for larger sound speed corrections. This paper will compare broadband incoherent L2- and coherent L1-inversion results. Careful consideration must be made of the acoustic frequency, number of modes, a priori environmental information (e.g., water depth), and array length. The method will be first demonstrated on simulations and recordings from the Littoral Depth Discrimination Experiment 2012 (LIDDEX12) data set.

A Method for Full-Depth Sound Speed Profile Reconstruction Based on Average Sound Speed Extrapolation

Abstract:The speed of sound in seawater plays a crucial role in determining the accuracy of multibeam bathymetric measurements. In deep-sea multibeam measurements, the challenge of inadequate longitudinal coverage of sound speed profiles arises from variations in seafloor topography, meteorological conditions, measurement equipment, and operational efficiency, resulting in diminished measurement precision. Building upon the EOF (Empirical Orthogonal Function), a method employed to analyze spatiotemporal data such as sound speeds, this paper addresses the limitations of the EOF method caused by the shallowest sampling depth of the sound speed profile samples. It proposes two methods for EOF reconstruction of measured sound speed profiles extended to full water depth by splicing measured sound speed profiles at non-full water depths with historical average sound speed profiles of the surveyed sea area. Specially, Method 2 introduces the latest metaheuristic optimization algorithm, CPO (Crested Porcupine Optimizer), which exhibited superior performance on multiple standard test functions in 2024. The study reconstructs randomly sampled measured sound speed profiles using the two proposed methods and commonly employed substitution and splicing methods, followed by a comparative analysis of the experimental outcomes. At a sampling depth of 200 m, Method 2 demonstrates performance superior to other methods, with RMSE, MAE, MAPE, and R2 values of 0.9511 m/s, 0.8492 m/s, 0.0566%, and 0.9963, respectively. Method 1 yields corresponding values of 0.9594 m/s, 0.8492 m/s, 0.0568%, and 0.9962, respectively. Despite its slightly inferior performance compared with Method 2, it offers substantial advantages over the substitution and splicing methods. Varying the sampling depth of measured sound speed profiles reveals that Methods 1 and 2 exhibit inferior reconstruction performance in shallow water compared with the substitution and splicing methods. Nevertheless, when the sampling depth surpasses the depth range of initial spatial modes with abrupt variations, both methods achieve notably higher reconstruction accuracy compared with the substitution and splicing methods, reaching a stabilized state. Sound ray tracing reveals that the reconstructed sound speed profiles from both methods meet the stringent accuracy standards for bathymetric measurements, achieving an effective beam ratio of 100%. The proposed methods not only provide rapid reconstruction of sound speed profiles, thereby improving the efficiency of multibeam bathymetric surveys, but also provide references for the reasonable determination of sampling depths of sound speed profiles to ensure reconstruction accuracy, demonstrating practical application value.

Abstract:It is increasingly important to our understanding of the effects of climate change on our oceans that we can model sound propagation in the future environments that are being predicted. This brings conflicting demands to increase the fidelity of sound propagation models, to account for a greater number of dynamic ocean properties, and their efficiency, in particular, to account for the spatial and temporal distribution of sound speed data. In this paper, different spatial clustering methods are developed to group similar sound speed data into a small number of clusters based on acoustically relevant properties of the sound speed structure. The clusters then represent the sound speed distribution, derived from thousands of individual sound speed profiles, with a small number of effective sound speed profiles which have similar properties. This is illustrated on data for the Norwegian Sea where the performance of each method is evaluated, using measures of the separation between clusters, and by comparing sound speed predictions using profiles sampled from each cluster and using the effective sound speed profile. We show that spatial clustering is an effective tool for reducing the number of sound speed profiles that are needed to represent their spatial distribution.

A Limited Data-Driven Approach to Oceanic Front Sound Speed Reconstruction

Abstract:In response to the demand for high-precision acoustic support under the condition of limited data, this study utilized high-resolution reanalysis data and in situ observation data to extract the Kuroshio Extension Front (KEF) section through front-line identification methods. By combining the parameterized oceanic front model and the statistical features of big data, the parameterized oceanic front was reconstructed. A proxy dataset was generated using the Latin hypercube sampling method, and the sound speed reconstruction model based on the PIX2PIX model was trained and validated using single sound speed profiles at different positions of the oceanic front, combined with the parameterized oceanic front model. The experimental results show that the proposed sound speed reconstruction model can significantly improve the reconstruction accuracy by introducing the parameterized front model as an additional input, especially in the shallow-water area. The mean absolute error (MAE) of the full-depth sound speed reconstruction for this model is 0.63~0.95 m·s−1, and the structural similarity index (SSIM) is 0.76~0.78. The MAE of the sound speed section within a 1000 m depth is reduced by 6.50~37.62%, reaching 1.95~3.31 m·s−1. In addition, the acoustic support capabilities and generalization of the model were verified through ray tracing models and in situ data. This study contributes to advancing high-precision acoustic support in data-limited oceanic environments, laying a solid groundwork for future innovations in marine acoustics.

Abstract:By establishing a linear regression relationship between the projection coefficient of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of the sound speed profile (SSP) and remote sensing parameters of the sea surface, the single empirical orthogonal function regression (sEOF-r) method was used to reconstruct the underwater SSP from satellite remote sensing data. However, because the ocean is a complex dynamical system, the parameters of the surface and the subsurface did not conform to the linear regression model in strict sense. This paper proposes a self-organizing map (SOM)-based nonlinear inversion method that used satellite observations to obtain anomalies in data on the sea surface temperature and height, and combined them with the EOF coefficient from an Argo buoy to train and generate a map. The SSP was then reconstructed by obtaining the best matching neuron. The results of SSP reconstruction in the northern part of the South China Sea showed that the relationship between the parameters of the sea surface and the subsurface could be adequately expressed by the nonlinear neuronal topology. The SOM algorithm generated a smaller inversion error than linear inversion and had better robustness. It improved the average accuracy of reconstruction by 0.88 m/s and reduced the mean-squared reconstruction error to less than 1.19 m/s. It thus offered significant promise for acoustic applications.
