Abstract:This paper proposes and tests competing hypotheses about the moderating roles of subordinates’ and supervisors’ workflow and friendship network positions on the abusive supervision-individual and team performance relationships. The power dependence theory suggests that subordinates’ centrality amplifies the negative effect of abusive supervision on subordinates’ task performance whereas supervisors’ centrality mitigates the negative relationship between abusive supervision and performance. The social capital perspective suggests that subordinates’ centrality provides resources that buffer the detrimental effect of abusive supervision whereas supervisors’ centrality enhances visibility and strengthens the negative effect of abusive supervision. Multi-source time-lagged data were collected from 197 subordinates and 37 supervisors from a research institute and provided support to hypotheses derived from the social capital perspective. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Aims To explore the relationships of ethical climate, physician-nurse collaboration and psychological empowerment with ethical conflict in critical care nurses. Background Ethical conflict is a major ethical issue in nursing practice. Little research has been done on the associated factors from both organizational and personal perspectives, especially in China. Methods From October 2021 to March 2022, we collected the data from 342 critical care nurses in three tertiary general hospitals in China via questionnaires about four variables (ethical climate, physician-nurse collaboration, psychological empowerment and ethical conflict). Data were analysed using Spearman's correlation and a structural equation model through statistical product and service solutions (SPSS) and analysis of moment structure (AMOS). Results Critical care nurses' ethical conflict showed a negative correlation with ethical climate (r = -0.351), physician-nurse collaboration (r = -0.347) and psychological empowerment (r = -0.259) (all p < 0.001). Physician-nurse collaboration partially mediated the relationship between ethical climate and ethical conflict. Additionally, physician-nurse collaboration and psychological empowerment served as sequential mediators in the association. Conclusions These findings suggested that negative ethical climate can lead to poor physician-nurse collaboration and ultimately ethical conflict. The intermediary role of psychological empowerment and physician-nurse collaboration was also identified. Implications for Nursing Management Nursing managers should use the study as a fundamental basis to evaluate factors that can affect nurses' ethical conflict and develop effective strategies to mitigate this issue, which may help improve nurses' wellbeing and quality of patient care.

Abstract:This research investigates abusive supervision's impact on employee voice behavior.We hypothesize that abusive supervision will influence employee voice behavior through undermining employee's perception of psychological safety.The study examines psychological safety's mediating effect in the relationship between abusive supervision and employee voice behavior.We also hypothesize that uncertainty avoidance moderates the relationship between abusive supervision and psychological safety perception in that an employee with higher uncertainty avoidance feels more psychological unsafe when being abused by his or her supervisor.Regression analyses on the data collected from 258 employees and 102 supervisors working in two petroleum and chemical enterprises support the above hypotheses.

Abstract:Drawing from an approach-avoidance perspective, we examine the relationships between subordinates' perceptions of abusive supervision, fear, defensive silence, and ultimately abusive supervision at a later time point. We also account for the effects of subordinates' assertiveness and individual perceptions of a climate of fear on these predicted mediated relationships. We test this moderated mediation model with data from three studies involving different sources collected across various measurement periods. Results corroborated our predictions by showing (a) a significant association between abusive supervision and subordinates' fear, (b) second-stage moderation effects of subordinates' assertiveness and their individual perceptions of a climate of fear in the abusive supervision-fear-defensive silence relationship (with lower assertiveness and higher levels of climate-of-fear perceptions exacerbating the detrimental effects of fear resulting from abusive supervision), and (c) first-stage moderation effects of subordinates' assertiveness and climate-of-fear perceptions in a model linking fear to defensive silence and abusive supervision at a later time. Abstract:Subordinates' counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs) have been demonstrated as a critical precursor to their supervisors' abusive supervision. However, prior research has mainly taken a victim precipitation paradigm and focused on exploring subordinate characteristics that may diminish or amplify this relationship. The important role of supervisor characteristics has been rather overlooked. Integrating self‐regulation and identity threat theories, the current study extends the prior literature by focusing on supervisor characteristics, specifically, supervisors' sleep quantity, sleep quality, and narcissism, as moderators of the relationship between subordinates' CWB and supervisors' abusive supervision. The study utilized a time‐lagged design with a sample of 292 employees and 50 supervisors at a Chinese hospital. Results showed that subordinates' CWB at Time 1 was positively related to their supervisors' abusive supervision at Time 2. Supervisors' sleep quality was found to mitigate the relationship between subordinates' CWB and supervisors' abusive supervision; however, the moderating effect of supervisors' sleep quantity was not significant. Moreover, supervisors' narcissism exacerbated the relationship between subordinates' CWB and supervisors' abusive supervision. This study contributes to the abusive supervision literature by shifting away from the victim precipitation paradigm and placing supervisors, those in positions of power, at the forefront. Findings from the study provide insights into the design and implementation of supervisor training aimed at mitigating abusive behaviors in the workplace.

Data collected from 78 Chinese organizations (456 employees and 78 human resource managers) revealed that: (1) abusive supervision leads to subordinate silence; (2) organizational high-performance work systems intensify this effect; and (3) such cross-level moderating effect of high-performance work systems is accounted for by employee organizational commitment.

Abstract:This manuscript examines a conceptual model that casts subordinate performance both as an antecedent and a consequence of abusive supervision and introduces supervisors’ outcome dependence as a key boundary condition. Combining predictions from moral exclusion and interdependence theory, we hypothesize that supervisors’ perceptions of subordinate performance will negatively associate with abusive supervision only if supervisors’ outcomes depend on such performance. Further, we propose that abusive supervision will inversely relate with subordinates’ subsequent, actual work performance. Finally, we build on the self-fulfilling prophecy literature to integrate these hypotheses. Under conditions of high (but not low) outcome dependence, abusive supervision is suggested to represent a crucial mediator that links subordinates’ perceived and actual work performance. We empirically test these hypotheses across two independent studies, using both an experimental scenario design (N = 157; Study 1) and a field research design (N = 183; Study 2). Results supported our predictions across both studies. All in all, these findings promote new knowledge on the origins of abusive supervision and advance a more comprehensive view of the abusive supervision – subordinate performance linkage, illustrating such hostile supervisor behavior as a possible mediating mechanism for self-fulfilling prophecy effects in organizations.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test a mediated moderation model of the joint influence of abusive supervision, high-performance work systems (HPWSs) and organizational commitment and intention to leave on employee silence. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 456 employees and 78 human resource managers in 78 Chinese organizations. Findings The results revealed that abusive supervision led to subordinate silence, and HPWSs intensified this effect. In addition, such moderating effect of HPWSs was accounted for by employees' organizational commitment and intention to leave. Originality/value This is the first study which demonstrates that HPWSs can foster employees' organizational commitment and hinder their intention to leave and consequently strengthen the relation between abusive supervision and employee silence.

Abstract:Workplace bullying experienced by clinical nurses is a critical and pervasive issue that not only detrimentally impacts nurses but also poses a significant threat to the overall quality of nursing services and patient care. This study aimed to determine the mediating role of organizational commitment in the relationship between workplace bullying and turnover intention among clinical nurses in China. Participants were recruited from 40 hospitals in various provinces of China from December 2, 2021 to February 25, 2023, using convenience sampling. After obtaining hospital ethical approval and participants’ informed consent, clinical nurses (n = 585) from different nursing departments in different hospitals completed the questionnaire. The Socio-demographic Questionnaire, Negative Acts Qestionnaire, Chinese Workers’ Organizational Commitment Scale and Turnover Intention Questionnaire were used to collect general demographic data of nurses and assess workplace bullying they experienced, their level of organizational commitment and turnover intention. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analyses and structural equation model were adopted to analyze the data. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that that workplace bullying was significantly negatively correlated with organizational commitment (r = − 0.512, P<0.01) and significantly positively correlated with turnover intention (r = 0.558, P<0.01), organizational commitment was significantly negatively correlated with turnover intention (r = − 0.539, P<0.01). Mediation analysis indicated organizational commitment partially mediated the association between workplace bullying and turnover intention. The total effect (β = 0.69) of workplace bullying on turnover intention consisted of its direct effect (β = 0.41) and the indirect effect mediated through organizational commitment (β = 0.280), with the mediating effect accounting for 40.58

Abstract:This study replicates previous studies by examining the effects of abusive supervision on employee deviant behaviours in the Chinese organisational context. It extends the existing research of abusive supervision by investigating the mediating role of the perception of interactional justice and the moderating role of individual-level power distance in the link between abusive supervision and workplace deviance. Regression analyses on data of 283 employee-supervisor dyads revealed that the perception of interactional justice mediates the link between abusive supervision and workplace deviance. We also found that abusive supervision has a stronger negative relationship with the perception of interactional justice for employees low in power distance than for employees high in power distance. These findings provide both replications of and extensions to western theories of abusive supervision and workplace deviance. Practical implications of this study include hints for reducing both financial and psychological costs of deviant behaviour.

Abstract:The research aims to estimate the impact of abusive supervision on psychological engagement and absorptive capacity under the mediating role of knowledge hiding. This study was cross-sectional and data were collected from employees of four different sectors through a questionnaire. The convenient sampling technique was used to collect data from 450 employees. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used as a data analysis technique because the two-stage SEM technique produces precise and accurate estimates while modeling the path analysis. The output of the measurement model assessment confirmed that all measurement scales were reliable. In addition to this, structural model assessment confirmed that abusive supervision did not significantly predict the absorptive capacity and psychological engagement, although knowledge hiding negatively predicted psychological engagement.

Abstract:While a large number of studies have shown the detrimental effects of abusive supervision on subordinates' work attitudes and outcomes, little is known about how abusive supervision impacts supervisors themselves. Drawing upon self-perception theory and power-dependence theory, we take a unique actor-focused approach to examine how and when engaging in abusive supervisory behavior may benefit actors (i.e., supervisors). Specifically, we propose that abusive supervisory behavior is positively related to supervisors' state sense of power, which in turn positively relates to their managerial self-efficacy and task-oriented leadership behavior. Furthermore, the relationship between abusive supervisory behavior and state sense of power and the positive indirect effect of abusive supervisory behavior on managerial self-efficacy via state sense of power are stronger for supervisors with low, rather than high, levels of chronic sense of power. Our hypotheses are substantially supported by a multi-wave field diary study (Study 1) conducted across 10 consecutive workdays and three experiments (Studies 2a, 2b, and 3). Moreover, supplementary analyses showed that abusive supervisory behavior was positively related to sense of power and managerial self-efficacy only in the short term (i.e., these relationships turned negative after one week). Our findings contribute to the abusive supervision literature by delineating a nuanced view of the supervisory outcomes of abusive supervision.

Abstract:Drawing from the group engagement model of justice, we examine how and when higher abusive supervision relates to fewer safety behaviors and worse safety performance. In Study 1, a 2-wave survey study of 468 manufacturing technicians, we found that belongingness need satisfaction mediated the negative relationship between abusive supervision and safety behavior. In Study 2, a multiwave survey study of 589 airline pilots, we found that safety behavior mediated the adverse relationship between abusive supervision and downstream objective safety performance. Higher trait social standing uncertainty was associated with a stronger adverse relationship between abusive supervision and safety. Indirect relationships of abusive supervision with safety behavior (Study 1) and safety performance (Study 2) were stronger among individuals with higher social standing uncertainty. Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate how abusive supervisor affects knowledge hiding (KH). Specifically, this study investigates employee silence as a mediating mechanism between abusive supervision and employees’ KH. Further, psychological ownership is examined as a buffer between abusive supervision and employee silence. Design/methodology/approach KH has become a major issue for both manufacturing and service sectors. Therefore, this study collected data from 322 employees working in manufacturing and service sectors through “Google Forms” during COVID-19. The respondents were contacted through LinkedIn platform between January and July 2021. Findings This study noted that when employees working in high-power distance cultures perceive their leaders/supervisors as abusive, they avoid confrontation and engage in silent behavior, which positively affects their KH behavior. However, employees with a high level of psychological ownership are less likely to respond to their abusive supervisors through silence because such employees feel a greater sense of belongingness and prefer to benefit their organization. Research limitations/implications This study used a cross-sectional design that restricts causality. However, the findings of this study suggest management to focus on leadership style to minimize KH at the workplace. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to explore the underlying mechanism (employee silence) and boundary condition (psychological ownership) to explain the association between abusive supervision and KH.

Abstract:In times of uncertainty, such as during COVID-19, many organizations experience profit decline, and employees develop a fear of external threats, such as organizational layoffs. However, most of the literature focuses on how people’s fear influences their well-being. Less is known about how employees’ fear of external threats influences their workplace behaviors. The current study proposes that supervisors’ fear of external threats stimulates those who are high in trait anger to behave in a more abusive way. Simultaneously, subordinates’ fear of external threats would strengthen the positive relationship between abusive supervision and their burnout and compulsory citizenship behaviors (CCB), as fear of external threats constrains their response options to abusive supervision. We tested the hypotheses with a multiwave and multisource survey study (N = 322 dyads) in China, and the results showed that supervisors’ fear of external threats strengthened the positive effect of trait anger on abusive supervision. Subordinates’ fear of external threats strengthens the positive relationships of abusive supervision with CCB and the mediating effect of abusive supervision in the relationship of supervisors’ trait anger with subordinates’ CCB. Our study enriches people’s understanding of how supervisors’ and subordinates’ fear of external threats may play roles in workplace behaviors.

Abstract:Drawing on the social cognitive theory,using data from 1 912 employees in 307 companies in different provinces of China,the paper further explores the relationship of abusive supervision and counterproductive work behavior and how the relationship is affected by other factors.Based on the empirical results,abusive supervision is significantly and positively related to counterproductive work behavior,and psychological contract violation mediates the relationship of abusive supervision and counterproductive work behavior,and self-construal moderates the relationships of abusive supervision and psychological contract violation/counterproductive work behavior.The paper enriches our understanding of the influencing mechanism of abusive supervision on counterproductive work behavior,and provides a new perspective for future research.

Abstract:Abusive supervision reflects a critical form of destructive leadership. Compared with the large amount of research on the consequences of abusive supervision, less attention has been paid to examining potential factors that may influence employees' perceptions of supervisor abuse. Moreover, there has been a dearth of research on team level abusive supervision, which has been conceived as an emergent construct at the collective level. This study investigated supervisor narcissism as one important precursor of team level abusive supervision climate using a sample of 386 employees from 52 work teams. In addition to a positive relationship between supervisor narcissism and abusive supervision climate, we found that abusive supervision climate was negatively related to team helping assessed by team members, but positively associated with team task performance rated by upper-level managers. Abusive supervision climate mediated the indirect effects of supervisor narcissism on both team helping and team task performance. We discussed the implications of this study for research on abusive supervision, destructive leadership, and narcissism, as well as for organizational and employee practices in terms of reducing and dealing with supervisor abuse.
