Abstract:Purpose: Measuring the blood flow velocity in capillaries is a useful method for diagnosing many diseases. Despite increasing interest in nailfold capillaroscopy, objective measures of capillary structure and blood flow have been rarely studied. This study aimed to measure the blood flow velocity along the capillary central line using capillaroscopy system, and also ImageJ software used Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) tracking algorithms and Kalman filter for image processing. Materials and Methods: The Red Blood Cells (RBCs) velocity in capillaries of finger nailfold was measured in 12 normal cases using a novel capillaroscopy system. The measurements of the velocity were performed at 12 points in nailfold regions by two observers separately. The image processing and automated measurement take 1-2 min per nailfold. FFmpeg software was used to convert the images format, and then the images were imported to ImageJ software and segmented. SIFT tracking algorithms and Kalman filter were used to filter noise and irregularities in the images. For reproducibility, the velocity distribution values obtained by the two performers, and Paired T-Test was used. The reliability of a measuring instrument or calculation method depends on the tools obtained using Cronbach's alpha. To assess the repeatability of the algorithm, the capillary velocity values were executed at different times with 24-hour intervals using a coefficient of variance method. Results: The calculated RBCs velocity was in the range of 0.05-0.16 mm/s. The results based on Cronbach's alpha analysis for reliability factor was 0.97, with a good correlation among the measurements, 0.85. The average velocity (along with standard deviation) for repeatability at three different times was obtained 0.1195 ± 0.0246, 0.0974 ± 0.0221, and 0.0962 ± 0.0202 mm/s, demonstrating that there was no statistically variation between these measurements (P-value > 0.05). The velocity results for the two observers were 0.811 ± 0.392 and 0.819 ± 0.325 mm/s, indicating a good reproducibility between them (P-value = 0.959). Conclusion: For the measurements of nailfold capillaries velocity, there was good/reasonable reliability, repeatability, and reproducibility. The results indicated a good accuracy of capillaroscopy system and ImageJ software with SIFT algorithm and Kalman filter, which can be used as an appropriate tool for determining the rate of nailfold blood flow velocity.

A Comprehensive Dataset and Automated Pipeline for Nailfold Capillary Analysis

Abstract:Nailfold capillaroscopy is widely used in assessing health conditions, highlighting the pressing need for an automated nailfold capillary analysis system. In this study, we present a pioneering effort in constructing a comprehensive nailfold capillary dataset-321 images, 219 videos from 68 subjects, with clinic reports and expert annotations-that serves as a crucial resource for training deep-learning models. Leveraging this dataset, we finetuned three deep learning models with expert annotations as supervised labels and integrated them into a novel end-to-end nailfold capillary analysis pipeline. This pipeline excels in automatically detecting and measuring a wide range of size factors, morphological features, and dynamic aspects of nailfold capillaries. We compared our outcomes with clinical reports. Experiment results showed that our automated pipeline achieves an average of sub-pixel level precision in measurements and 89.9% accuracy in identifying morphological abnormalities. These results underscore its potential for advancing quantitative medical research and enabling pervasive computing in healthcare. Abstract:A digit image processing system was developed to quantitatively analyse two-dimension (2D) morphometric data on the microcirculatory network. Processing the digitized image by noise elimination, thresholding, primary improving, thinning and secondary improving, we can eliminate the tissue background effectively to get 2D morphometric information which cannot be readily obtained by manual methods, including length of microvessels, number of nodal points, distribution of diameter, perfused condition and branch angle, etc. A high speed and a high degree of consistency are found and human bias are avoided. Distilling the main skeleton line of shrimp based on machine vision technology

Abstract:The length is one of main features of shrimps,which can be seen from the main skeleton line of the shrimp. So,it is very important to analyze the main skeleton line. The length of branches was studied based on a classical thinning method in this research. And the initial length was set as the threshold. The threshold should be corrected automatically after one branch was removed each time. This algorithm could remove branches of the skeleton efficiently and didn’t have an effect on the length of the main skeleton line. Actually, the length of skeleton was highly correlated with the real length,the maximum R2 was 0.946 and the minimum R2 was 0.747. The real length of another sample set was predicted with this method ,and the mean relative error was 2.06%. Results demonstrated that this algorithm had prevalent applicability to distill the main skeleton line from the skeleton of the shrimp no matter what posture the shrimp’s body was. The main skeleton line produced by this algorithm not only had great smoothness and connectedness,but also kept one-pixel width. The geometric properties of the main skeleton line could be shown precisely.
Automatic Analysis of Microaneurysms Turnover to Diagnose the Progression of Diabetic Retinopathy.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common microvascular complications and its early detection is critical for the prevention of vision loss. Recent studies have indicated that microaneurysms (MAs) are the hallmark of DR. However, the detection of MAs relies on trained clinicians and relatively expensive software. Moreover, manual errors often lower the accuracy of this detection. Therefore, an automatic analysis technique is highly demanded in the detection of DR progression. In this paper, we present a novel and complete methodology involving two different ways from the view of MAs turnover and pathological risk factors to diagnose the progression of DR. Specifically, one approach follows the traditional image analysis-based roadmap to obtain MAs turnover. The other investigates seven pathological features, related with MAs turnover, to classify the unchanged, new, and resolved MAs by means of statistical analysis and pattern classification techniques. The evaluations on Grampian diabetes database show that the proposed image analysis method could achieve a sensitivity of 94% and a specificity of 93%, while the classification model could achieve 89% sensitivity and 88% specificity, respectively. We also analyzed the potential weight of pathological risk factors leading to the MAs turnover, which could provide an alternative guidance for the progression of DR than traditional detection methods. In conclusion, this study provides a novel and noninvasive detection technique for early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy with a competitive accuracy.

Abstract:Nail capillaroscopic examination is an inexpensive and easily applicable method to identify capillary morphological changes in patients with conditions such as systemic sclerosis and Raynaud's. The detection of changes in capillaries makes an important contribution to diagnosing these diseases. Capillary morphology is important in the symptoms of these diseases, and capillary diameter, visibility, distribution, length, microbleeds, blood flow, and density are important indicators in capillaroscopic evaluation. Manual examination to determine these parameters is subjective, causes inconsistent results, and is labor-intensive and time-consuming. To overcome these problems, a YOLOv8s-based system was proposed in this paper to detect the number, thickness, and density of capillaries in the nail bed. The system's components include database systems that store the analysis results, artificial intelligence-based software that runs on the SBC (Single-Board Computer), and recorded microscope images. mAP and F1_score parameters were used to evaluate the system's performance, and values of 0.882 and 0.83 were obtained. The proposed system is promising in improving the diagnosis process of diseases such as systemic sclerosis and Raynaud's by providing objective measurements and the early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases.

Artificial Intelligence Algorithms in Nailfold Capillaroscopy Image Analysis: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background Non-invasive imaging modalities offer a great deal of clinically significant information that aid in the diagnosis of various medical conditions. Coupled with the never-before-seen capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI), uncharted territories that offer novel innovative diagnostics are reached. This systematic review compiled all studies that utilized AI in Nailfold Capillaroscopy as a future diagnostic tool. Methods and Findings Five databases for medical publications were searched using the keywords artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning and nailfold capillaroscopy to return 105 studies. After applying the eligibility criteria, 10 studies were selected for the final analysis. Data was extracted into tables that addressed population characteristics, AI model development and nature and results of their respective performance. We found supervised deep learning approaches to be the most commonly used (n = 8). Systemic Sclerosis was the most commonly studied disease (n = 6). Sample size ranged from 17,126 images obtained from 289 participants to 50 images from 50 participants. Ground truth was determined either by experts labelling (n = 6) or known clinical status (n = 4). Significant variation was noticed in model training, testing and feature extraction, and therefore the reporting of model performance. Recall, precision and Area Under the Curve were the most used metrics to report model performance. Execution times ranged from 0.064 to 120 seconds per image. Only two models offered future predictions besides the diagnostic output. Conclusions AI has demonstrated a truly remarkable potential in the interpretation of Nailfold Capillaroscopy by providing physicians with an intelligent decision-supportive tool for improved diagnostics and prediction. With more validation studies, this potential can be translated to daily clinical practice.

Abstract:Background: Nail diseases are often associated with significant physical and psychosocial burden, but diagnosis is challenging due to non-specific clinical and histological findings. Nail fold capillaroscopy has been studied for diagnosis of systemic diseases, but studies on nail diseases are lacking. Objective: Our objectives were to characterize and compare capillary changes in a set of nail conditions vs. controls, between nail groups, and based on demographic/clinical criteria. Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study of patients with nail psoriasis, onychomycosis, idiopathic onycholysis, brittle nail syndrome, nail lichen planus, retronychia, other nail conditions, and no nail findings (controls) undergoing capillaroscopy imaging/analysis. Results: Nail psoriasis vs. control patients demonstrated decreased capillary length/density and increased abnormal capillaries, with higher frequency in older, male patients. Onychomycosis was associated with increased meandering capillaries compared to controls, nail psoriasis, and nail lichen planus. Retronychia is associated with increased disorganized polymorphic capillaries compared to controls and onychomycosis. Limitations: Limitations include small sample size for certain nail conditions and small numbers of nail psoriasis patient with psoriatic arthritis. Conclusion: Our findings highlight nailfold capillaroscopy as a potentially quick, cost-effective, and non-invasive imaging modality, as an adjunct for diagnosis and treatment initiation for patients with onychodystrophies.

Abstract:Nail psoriasis is a chronic condition characterized by nail dystrophy affecting the nail matrix and bed. The severity of nail psoriasis is commonly assessed using the Nail Psoriasis Severity Index (NAPSI), which evaluates the characteristics and extent of nail involvement. Although the NAPSI is numeric, reproducible, and simple, the assessment process is time‐consuming and often challenging to use in real‐world clinical settings. To overcome the time‐consuming nature of NAPSI assessment, we aimed to develop a deep learning algorithm that can rapidly and reliably evaluate NAPSI, thereby providing numerous clinical and research advantages. We developed a dataset consisting of 7054 single fingernail images cropped from images of the dorsum of the hands of 634 patients with psoriasis. We annotated the eight features of the NAPSI in a single nail using bounding boxes and trained the YOLOv7‐based deep learning algorithm using this annotation. The performance of the deep learning algorithm (DLA) was evaluated by comparing the NAPSI estimated using the DLA with the ground truth of the test dataset. The NAPSI evaluated using the DLA differed by 2 points from the ground truth in 98.6% of the images. The accuracy and mean absolute error of the model were 67.6% and 0.449, respectively. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.876, indicating good agreement. Our results showed that the DLA can rapidly and accurately evaluate the NAPSI. The rapid and accurate NAPSI assessment by the DLA is not only applicable in clinical settings, but also provides research advantages by enabling rapid NAPSI evaluations of previously collected nail images.

Abstract:Objective. Corneal nerve fiber (CNF) has been found to exhibit morphological changes associated with various diseases, which can therefore be utilized to aid in the early diagnosis of those diseases. CNF is usually visualized under corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) in clinic. To obtain the diagnostic biomarkers from CNF image produced from CCM, image processing and quantitative analysis are needed. Usually, CNF is segmented first and then CNF's centerline is extracted, allowing for measuring geometrical and topological biomarkers of CNF, such as density, tortuosity, and length. Consequently, the accuracy of the segmentation and centerline extraction can make a big impact on the biomarker measurement. Thus, this study is aimed to improve the accuracy and universality of centerline extraction. Approach. We developed a new thinning algorithm based on neighborhood statistics, called neighborhood-statistics thinning (NST), to extract the centerline of CNF. Compared with traditional thinning and skeletonization techniques, NST exhibits a better capability to preserve the fine structure of CNF which can effectively benefit the biomarkers measurement above. Moreover, NST incorporates a fitting process, which can make centerline extraction be less influenced by image segmentation. Main results. This new method is evaluated on three datasets which are segmented with five different deep learning networks. The results show that NST is superior to thinning and skeletonization on all the CNF-segmented datasets with a precision rate above 0.82. Last, NST is attempted to be applied for the diagnosis of keratitis with the quantitative biomarkers measured from the extracted centerlines. Longer length and higher density but lower tortuosity were found on the CNF of keratitis patients as compared to healthy patients. Significance. This demonstrates that NST has a good potential to aid in the diagnostics of eye diseases in clinic.

Abstract:Microcirculation imaging has significantly clinical value in early diagnosis and curative effect judgment of various diseases. The most superficial layer of the nailbed is rich in capillaries, which is suitable as a window on the microcirculation. However, few techniques can noninvasively observe the blood supply distribution of the nailbed, especially for high-resolution imaging of capillaries. In this study, we adapted an optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) to image the nailbed microvasculature. The imaging sensitivity was significantly improved by hydration pretreatment of the nail. In vitro phantom experiments demonstrate that the sensitivity was improved about 3.5 times after hydration. In vivo imaging experiments of the nailbed microvasculature were conducted to further examine the enhanced sensitivity and practicability of OR-PAM. Moreover, the quantitative analysis of capillary loops showed that OR-PAM can extract the detection indicators including vascular morphology, diameter, and length, which provides a basis for clinical microcirculation detection using OR-PAM. Abstract:Objective:To observe the morphology,flow state and periphery of toe nailfold microvessels in healthy volunteers.Method:The indox of toe nailfold microciroulation was detected by ZL104 microcirculatory microscopy with image analysis system.Results:There was no significant difference in the number,the length and the diameter of nailfold microvessels between the right and the left toes.The number of microvessles was from 4.33 to 5.67/mm,and the microvascular length was from 70.94 to 155.92μm.The ranges of the input and output branches,the top diameter of microvessles were respectively 5.50~10.50μm,8.03~12.41μm and 7.64~12.66μm.The blood velocity of 84.61% healthy subjects was ≥400μm/s and that of 15.39% was between 300～399μm/s.Mean while,the images of 88.46% healthy subjects showed no or mild erythrocyte aggregation and effusion,and the images of 11.54% showed moderate aggregation and effusion.The frequency of the microvascular contract in all subjects was 0~4 times per min.All subjects had less than 2 lines of the venous plexus under the nipple.White microembolus and bleeding weren't found in all subjects.Conclusion:Toe is an appropriate position for intravital microvessel observation.There is no significant difference in morphology,flow state and periphery of nailfold microvessels between the right and left toes.
A Novel Non-Iterative Shape Method for Estimating the Decay Time Constant of the Finger Photoplethysmographic Pulse

Abstract:The photoplethysmogram (PPG) of a pulse wave, similar in appearance to the arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveform, contains rich information about the cardiovascular system. The decay time constant RC, equal to the product of peripheral resistance R and total arterial compliance C, is a meaningful cardiovascular model parameter in vascular assessment. Using or ameliorating the existing ABP methods does not achieve a satisfactory estimation of RC from the PPG volume pulse (VRC). Thus, a novel non-iterative shape method (NSM) of evaluating VRC is introduced in this paper. The mathematic expression between a novel, readily available morphological parameter called the area difference ratio (ADR) and VRC was established. As it was difficult to calculate VRC from the complicated expression analytically, we recommend estimating it using a piecewise linear interpolation criterion. Also, since the effect of the PPG magnitude is eliminated in the calculation of ADR, precaliberation or normalization is dispensable in the NSM. Results of human experiments indicated that the NSM was computationally efficient, and the simulation experiments confirmed that the NSM was theoretically available for ABP.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, Ahead of Print. Diabetes is often considered a vascular disease due to its impact on blood vessels, it is a complex condition with various metabolic and autoimmune factors involved. One of the long term comorbidities of diabetes includes microvascular complications. The microvascular complications can be analyzed using the Nailfold capillaroscopy, a non-invasive technique that allows for the visualization and analysis of capillaries in the proximal nailfold area. Using advanced video capillaroscopy with high magnification, capillary images can be captured from and processed to analyze their morphology. The capillary images of normal group and diabetic group are acquired from 118 participants using nailfold capillaroscopy and the obtained images are preprocessed using image processing filters. The identification and segmentation of the capillaries are the challenges to be addressed in the processing of the images. Hence segmentation of capillaries is done using morphological operations, thresholding and convolutional neural networks. The performance of the filters and segmentation methods are evaluated using Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), Jaccard Index and Sorensen coefficient. By analyzing the morphological features namely the capillary diameter, density, distribution, presence of hemorrhage and the shape of the capillaries from both the groups, the capillary changes associated with diabetic condition were studied. It was found that the non diabetic participants considered in this study has capillary diameter in the range of 8–14 μm and the capillary density in the range of 10–30 capillaries per mm2 whereas the diabetic participants has capillary diameter greater than 30 μm and the capillary density is less than 10 capillaries per mm2. In addition to capillary density and diameter, the presence of hemorrhage, the orientation and distribution of the capillaries are also considered to differentiate the diabetic group from the non diabetic group. The classification of the participants are validated with the clinical history of the participants.

Abstract:Vascular cross-section is an important basis for computer-assisted diagnosis of vascular diseases. In this study, a new algorithm of calculating cross-sectional area of blood vessels was proposed. The algorithm first extracts centerline of the blood vessel from the image through thinning algorithm, and obtains neighborhood coordinates of each point on the centerline. The principal component analysis is employed on and the blood vessel cross-section is achieved via coordinating transformation with the tangent vector. Experiments were performed with the real data and simulated data, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method can efficiently detect stenosis of blood vessels with high accuracy, and achieve 2.06% deviation from the simulated ring model.

Abstract:A Summary: A novel method based on voxel-based morphometry was proposed to investigate the average volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) of femoral head nail tract in patients treated with intramedullary nails-proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) and gamma nail (GN). The results showed that there was no significant difference in average vBMD between the two groups. Background: For unstable intertrochanteric fractures, poor bone quality might be one of the most important causes of cut-out complications in the femoral head during surgical treatment. Bone quality is generally regarded as an equivalent of BMD. Thus, we develop a novel voxel-based morphometry-based method to quantify vBMD of the femoral head nail tract. Methods: Automatic calculation of average vBMD of nail tracts requires three main steps. First, we built a standard nail tract in a proximal femur template. Then, we mapped the proximal femur structure of each patient to the template by B-spline and Demons registration so that the anatomical positions of the proximal femur of all patients spatially corresponded to the standard template. Finally, we calculated and visualized the average vBMD distribution of the nail tract of all patients. To verify the feasibility of the method, we enrolled 75 patients (52 women and 23 men) with hip fractures to our study to compare measurements. The root mean square of the standard deviation (RMSSD) was calculated, and the coefficient of variation (CV) of the RMSSD (CV-RMSSD) was used to evaluate the reproducibility of intraoperator and interscan measurements. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the average vBMD of nail tracts for the PFNA and GN. Results: The CV-RMSSD of intraoperator measurements ranged from 1.0% to 2.0%, and the CV-RMSSD of interscan measurements ranged from 3.6% to 4.5%. There was no significant difference in the average vBMD between patients with PFNAs and those with GNs (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The proposed method is reproducible for determining the average vBMD, which may provide a reference index for selection of appropriate intramedullary nails for individual patients. The current choice of intramedullary nail based on the experience of a surgeon may be biased. The translational potential of this article: A novel method was proposed to measure the spatial average vBMD of nail tracts, which has good potential to provide a reference index for surgeons to choose appropriate implants. Morphometric Optical Imaging of Microporated Nail Tissue: An Investigation of Intermethod Agreement, Reliability, and Technical Limitations

Abstract:Background and objectives: While optical imaging is a useful technique to quantitate morphological differences and treatment effects, comparative investigations of the various techniques are lacking. This study aimed at evaluating intermethod agreement, reliability, and technical limitations of wide-field microscopy (WFM), reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for morphometry by assessing fractionally ablated nail tissue. Study design/materials and methods: Fifty healthy nail clippings were processed with a fractionated CO2 -laser (20 mJ/microbeam, density 15%), measured with calipers, and imaged using WFM, OCT, and RCM. Images were assessed for nail plate thickness, micropore dimensions, degree of poration, and artifacts. Repeated measurements (2-5) were taken to evaluate method repeatability using Cronbach's α and coefficients of variation (CoV), and estimate the intermethod correlation through linear correlation assessment (Pearson correlation coefficient [PCC]), ranked correlation (Kendall's tau; tau-c), and intraclass correlation (Shrout-Fleiss reliability coefficient; ICC). Results: The repeatability varied substantially between methods and target measurements. The level of intermethod agreement for thickness measurements performed with calipers, WFM, and OCT was high (tau-c ≥ 0.7; ICC ≥ 0.8; PCC ≥ 0.9). RCM could only image 28 out of 50 samples due to its limited penetration depth. OCT demonstrated the highest repeatability of all imaging techniques (CoV 4-7%) and nail thickness showed the highest measurement reliability (α = 0.92). Micropore dimensions correlated strongest between OCT and RCM (tau-c/ICC/PCC ≥ 0.5). All modalities were prone to artifacts, which may have adversely affected measurement variation and intermethod agreement. Conclusion: Intermethod agreement and reliability appear to be highly dependent on the specific modality and target measurement. To reap the benefits of each technique while mitigating their limitations, an integrated approach to optical imaging is recommended. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.
In Vivo Structural and Functional Imaging of Human Nailbed Microvasculature Using Photoacoustic Microscopy.

Abstract:Monitoring microvascular structure and function is of great significance for the diagnosis of many diseases. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of OR-PAM to nailbed microcirculation detection as a new, to the best of our knowledge, application scenario in humans. We propose a dual-wavelength optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) with improved local-flexible coupling to image human nailbed microvasculature. Microchip lasers with 532 nm wavelength are employed as the pump sources. The 558 nm laser is generated from the 532 nm laser through the stimulated Raman scattering effect. The flowing water, circulated by a peristaltic pump, maintains the acoustic coupling between the ultrasonic transducer and the sample. These designs improve the sensitivity, practicality, and stability of the OR-PAM system for human in vivo experiments. The imaging of the mouse ear demonstrates the ability of our system to acquire structural and functional information. Then, the system is applied to image human nailbed microvasculature. The imaging results reveal that the superficial capillaries are arranged in a straight sagittal pattern, approximately parallel to the long axis of the finger. The arterial and venular limbs are distinguished according to their oxygen saturation differences. Additionally, the images successfully discover the capillary loops with single or multiple twists, the oxygen release at the end of the capillary loop, and the changes when the nailbed is abnormal.
A Lightweight and Noise-Robust Method for Internal OCT Fingerprint Reconstruction

Abstract:Optical coherence tomography (OCT), as a non-invasive and high-resolution three-dimensional imaging technology, can capture biological tissue structure information under the skin of fingertips. This structure information facilitates stronger anti-spoofing capability of automatic fingerprint recognition systems (AFRSs), and the reconstructed internal fingerprint images based on the structural information are more robust against poor skin conditions. Various internal fingerprint reconstruction methods have been proposed, but these approaches often ignore the continuity of spatial structure information, have a large number of model parameters and are sensitive to noise. Specific to these problems, this paper proposes a lightweight and noise-robust point detection network (LNPDN) to reconstruct internal fingerprints. At first, by combining the ShuffleNet with the temporal shift module and self-attention, the continuity of spatial information is considered. Meanwhile, the previous refined tissue structural region segmentation task, which is highly affected by noise, is transformed into an easy noise-robust feature point detection mission. Then, these detected points are synthesized into a curve to represent the upper envelope of the viable epidermis by linear interpolation. Finally, internal fingerprint image is reconstructed by averaging those pixel values at a certain depth range below the envelope. The experimental results show the proposed feature point extraction model for the central vertex of ridge blocks reaches the F1-score value of 93.911%, and the average minimum point-segment distance between the proposed curve and the target curve is 1.475. It demonstrates that the proposed model can well extract the central vertex of the ridge blocks and the curve can reflect the location of the viable epidermis. We also compared the recognition capabilities of internal fingerprints extracted from 2138 OCT fingerprint volume data on the public OCT fingerprint benchmark dataset. Our method achieves the lowest equal error rate of 0.167%, with a relative reduction of 60.91% compared with state-of-the-art reconstruction methods.

Abstract:Even though the deep neural networks have strong feature representation capability and high recognition accuracy in finger vein recognition, the deep models are computationally intensive and poor in timeliness. To address these issues, this article proposes a lightweight algorithm for finger vein image recognition and matching. The proposed algorithm uses a lightweight convolutional model in the backbone network and employs a triplet loss function to train the model, which not only improves the matching accuracy, but also satisfies the real-time matching requirements. In addition, the Mini-region of interest (RoI) and finger vein pattern feature extraction also effectively solve the problems of large amounts of calculation and background noise. Moreover, the present model recognizes new categories based on the feature vector space constructed by the finger vein recognition system, so that new categories can be recognized without retraining the model. The results show that the finger vein recognition and matching algorithm proposed in this article achieves 99.3% and 99.6% in recognition accuracy and 14.2 and 16.5 ms in matching time for the dataset Shandong University Machine Learning and Applications Laboratory-Homologous Multimodal Biometric Traits (SDUMLA-HMT) and Peking University Finger Vein Dataset (PKU-FVD), respectively. These metrics show that our approach is time-saving and more effective than previous algorithms. Compared with the state-of-the-art finger vein recognition algorithm, the proposed algorithm improves 1.45% in recognition accuracy while saving 45.7% in recognition time.
