Abstract:Coastal oceans, serving as transitional zones between land and sea, possess unique geographical features and complex hydrological conditions, functioning as regional reservoirs and crucial transport pathways for anthropogenic pollutants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) to the open ocean. This study comprehensively investigates traditional perfluoroalkyl carboxylic and sulphonic acids (PFCAs and PFSAs) and emerging perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic and sulfonic acids (PFECAs and PFESAs), fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTSAs) in seawater columns and surface sediments from the inner shelf of the East China Sea, by integrating hydrological and biogeochemical data. Comparable levels of traditional and emerging PFASs were observed in seawater samples, in contrast to higher concentrations of traditional PFASs in surface sediments. Waterborne PFASs exhibited a nearshore-to-offshore decreasing trend and a surface enrichment pattern in offshore waters, typically influenced by terrestrial inputs and oceanic processes. Significant terrestrial inputs for waterborne PFASs were identified, including large rivers like the Changjiang River (Yangtze) and semi-enclosed coastal bays such as Xiangshan Port and Sanmen Bay, where prolonged hydraulic retention times contribute to PFAS accumulation. The source apportionment model demonstrated that emerging fluorochemical manufacturing, textile production, and high-performance fluoropolymer materials are primary sources, consistent with PFAS releases from commercial products and industrial processes along the Changjiang River and in Xiangshan County. Hydrologically, the offshore transport barrier effect created by river plume fronts, and the vertical stratification of different water masses were significant for PFASs. Sediment inputs and resuspension also played a crucial role, with surface sediment-bottom water partitioning behavior primarily regulated by the hydrophobicity of PFASs and salting-out effects. While the overall ecological risks of PFASs were low, elevated risks associated with legacy perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and emerging hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) warrant closer attention due to their accumulation in the environment. The methodologies and findings of this research provide valuable insights into PFAS cycling in coastal oceans worldwide.

Abstract:PFAS, recognized as persistent organic pollutants, present risks to both the ecological environment and human health. Studying PFASs in surface water yields insights into pollution dynamics. However, existing research on PFASs surface water pollution in China often focuses on specific regions, lacking comprehensive nationwide analyses. This study examined 48 research papers covering PFAS pollution in Chinese surface water, involving 49 regions and 1338 sampling sites. The results indicate widespread PFAS contamination, even in regions like Tibet. Predominant PFAS types include PFOA and PFOS, and pollution is associated with the relocation of industries from developed to developing countries post-2010. The shift from long-chain to short-chain PFASs aligns with recent environmental policy proposals. Geographic concentration of PFAS pollution correlates with industry distribution and economic development levels. Addressing point source pollution, especially from wastewater plant tailwater, is crucial for combating PFAS contamination. Greater emphasis should be placed on addressing short-chain PFASs.

Abstract:China, as one of the largest global producers and consumers of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), faces concerning levels of PFAS pollution in soil. However, knowledge of their occurrence in agricultural soils of China on the national scale remains unknown. Herein, the first nationwide survey was done by collecting 352 soil samples from 31 provinces in mainland China. The results indicated that the Sigma(24)PFASs concentrations were 74.3 24880.0 pg/g, with mean concentrations of PFASs in decreasing order of legacy PFASs > emerging PFASs > PFAS precursors (640.2 pg/g, 340.7 pg/g, and 154.9 pg/g, respectively). The concentrations in coastal eastern China were distinctly higher than those in inland regions. Tianjin was the most severely PFASs-contaminated province because of rapid urban industrialization. This study further compared the PFAS content in monoculture and multiple cropping farmland soils, finding the concentrations of PFASs were high in soils planted with vegetable and fruit monocultures. Moreover, a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was employed to identify different sources of PFASs. Fluoropolymer industries and aqueous film-forming foams were the primary contributors. The contributions from different emission sources varied across the seven geographical regions. This study provides new baseline data for prevention and control policies for reducing pollution.

Abstract:Since the addition of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) to the Stockholm Convention in 2009, it became imperative to reassess the distribution and ecological risk of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in coastal sediments over the past decade as sediment records the history of pollutants from human activities. To achieve this, sediments were collected in 2009 and 2021 from China's coastal regions. Despite the consistent geographical pattern where the highest concentrations of ∑PFAS were found in the Yellow Sea, temporal changes have emerged. During the studied period, ∑PFAS levels experienced an increase in the East China Sea while concurrently witnessing a decrease in the South China Sea. Of significance, emerging PFAS compounds displayed not only rising concentrations but also a broader array, pointing towards their intensified production and utilization within China. Alarmingly, PFOS levels in sediments taken from the East China Sea maintained a consistently high ecological risk status over the last ten years. Significant correlations were found between long-chain PFAS and organic carbon content. Comparisons between datasets from 2009 to 2021 uncovered a shifting ecological risk landscape, with heightened concerns for PFOA in the East China Sea, while PFOS-associated risks appeared to diminish in the South China Sea-potentially reflecting the transition to alternative PFAS chemicals. The research reinforces the importance of continuous monitoring and emphasizes the urgent necessity for deeper exploration into the environmental implications and hazards posed by emerging PFAS.
Perfluoroalkyl acids in rapidly developing coastal areas of China and South Korea: Spatiotemporal variation and source apportionment

Abstract:Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are recognized as emerging contaminants that have captured worldwide attention. They are primarily transported in environments and spread around the globe due to their persistent and bioaccumulative characteristics. In this study, 15 PFASs were detected in major rivers of the rapidly developing coastal areas of China and South Korea. The concentrations and compositions of these PFASs varied greatly between different regions along the coastline. The total concentrations ranged from 14.9 to 16,500 ng L-1, and the mean concentrations of Σ15PFASs in Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, Laizhou Bay, and the west coast of South Korea were 124 ng L-1, 81.4 ng L-1, 1550 ng L-1, and 36.2 ng L-1, respectively. In Laizhou Bay, the relatively high perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was due to the high usage and manufacturing of PFOA-containing products and contributed 59% of the total compounds. In Liaodong Bay and Bohai Bay, PFBA and PFOA were the most abundant compounds, accounting for >55% of the total compounds. Along the west coast of South Korea, PFBA and PFPeA were the most prevalent compounds, contributing 28% and 24% of the total compounds, respectively. The data collected in the last decade were analyzed to investigate the temporal trends of selected PFASs. The total concentration of Σ10 PFASs decreased in both China and South Korea, while the proportion of short-chain PFASs increased. The proportion of C4-C7 PFCAs in South Korea rapidly increased from 46% to 79% but decreased from 49% to 43% in China. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model successfully addressed the site-specific source apportionment, which showed that 53% of the PFASs in Laizhou Bay were due to fluorine manufacturing. The results of this study provide novel insights into elucidating the spatiotemporal distribution and complicated sources of PFASs over a large area and provide a clear message for all stakeholders, water and coastal managers, and scientists.
Distributions and sources of traditional and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances among multiple environmental media in the Qiantang River watershed, China

Abstract:The presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the food chain poses a threat to human health. Water and the atmosphere are the major transport pathways for PFASs in the environment, while water, soil and sediment are sinks. Herein, the concentrations and distributions of traditional and emerging PFASs in multi-environmental media samples in the Qiantang River watershed were comprehensively investigated. Twenty-five PFASs, including seven emerging PFASs, were identified. The concentrations in water, soil, sediment and PM 2.5 ranged from 3.58 to 786 ng L −1 , 0.72 to 12.3 ng g −1 , 0.73 to 6.60 ng g −1 , and 93.9 to 255 pg m −3 , respectively, with mean concentrations of 149 ng L −1 , 4.70 ng g −1 , 4.31 ng g −1 , and 156 pg m −3 . Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the dominant contaminant in water, soil, and sediment, and perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) was the dominant contaminant in PM 2.5 . Hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid (HFPO-DA) and 6 : 2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6 : 2 Cl-PFESA), as substitutes for PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), were detected, indicating the gradual replacement of traditional PFOA and PFOS in this area. Perfluoro-3,6-dioxaheptanoic acid (NFDHA), as a component of the aqueous film-forming foam FN-3, was first detected in this area. Short-chain PFASs were mainly distributed in water and PM 2.5 , while long-chain PFASs were distributed in the solid phase, such as soil, sediment, and PM 2.5 . Based on principal component analysis (PCA), the major PFAS sources were emulsifiers from fluorine polymerization and surface-active agents from the textile, papermaking, leather, and other industries. In addition, correlation analysis showed that water was the main source and transport pathway of short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (PFCA), HFPO-DA, and NFDHA in this area, while the atmosphere combined with PM 2.5 was the main transport pathway for both short- and long-chain PFCAs, PFOS, and 6 : 2 Cl-PFESA.

Occurrence and source apportionment of novel and legacy poly/perfluoroalkyl substances in Hai River basin in China using receptor models and isomeric fingerprints

Abstract:A variety of fluorinated alternatives are being manufactured and applied as a consequence of stringent regulations on legacy poly/perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). In this study, 26 emerging and legacy PFASs were measured in the surface water (including dissolved phase and suspended particulate matter) and sediments taken from Hai River basin, China. The total concentrations of PFASs (∑PFASs) ranged from 1.74 to 172 ng/L, with perfluorooctanonate (PFOA) as the dominant compound (15.2% of the ∑PFASs, median value). Emerging PFASs, such as dimer acid of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) and trimer acid (HFPO-TA), were widely detected in the water samples. Specifically, chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B) was observed to be predominant in some sediment samples. A receptor model, Unmix, was introduced to identify the sources of PFASs in the surface water, and the results indicated that fire-fighting foam/fluoropolymer processing aids (36.6%) were the dominant source. The field-based sediment-water (organic carbon normalized) coefficients, Koc, were correlated to the carbon chain lengths of the PFASs. A technique coupling one-way analysis of variance with chemical mass balance model was developed to trace the manufacturing sources of PFOA. Electrochemical fluorination (ECF) was the major PFOA manufacturing source with considerable contribution by telomerization. For the first time, the isomers of perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) were quantified in the environmental samples. The lower proportion of branched (br-) PFOSA isomers and higher percentage of br-perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) isomers in the water samples relative to their corresponding commercial products, provided more direct evidences that br-PFOSA isomers were biotransformed more easily than n-PFOSA, explaining the observed enrichment of br-PFOS in the aquatic environment.
Occurrence and transport of novel and legacy poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances in coastal rivers along the Laizhou Bay, northern China

Abstract:The pollution profiles of 25 legacy and emerging poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the estuaries along the Laizhou Bay, northern China were investigated to better understand the new structure of PFASs under international regulations and to estimate the mass loadings of PFASs in coastal rivers. About 39.87 kg/d of PFASs were discharged into the Laizhou Bay by the Xiaoqing, Mi and Zhimai Rivers. Total PFAS concentrations in the Xiaoqing River decreased notably in recent years, but were still greater than the levels in 2011. Contribution of replacement substances exhibited an increasing trend in recent years. However, the long-chain chemicals were still the larger contributors of PFASs. Perfluoromethoxypropionic acid (PFMPA) was first detected with high concentrations ranging from 165.3 to 586.3 ng/L in the Xiaoqing River. The results of this study provided baseline data for ecological risk assessment, environmental management and corresponding development of pollution treatment technology.
Tracing perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in soils along the urbanizing coastal area of Bohai and Yellow Seas, China

Abstract:With the shift of fluorine chemical industry from developed countries to China and increasing demand for fluorine chemical products, occurrence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in production and application areas has attracted more attention. In this study, 153 soil samples were collected from 21 cities along the urbanizing coastal area of the Bohai and Yellow Seas. PFASs in this area were relatively higher, compared with other study areas. The concentrations ranged from 2.76 to 64.0 ng g-1, and those in most sites were between 2.76 and 13.9 ng g-1, with a predominance of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Among the 21 coastal cities, contaminations of PFASs in Zibo, Nantong and Binzhou were elevated, which was likely affected by local fluorine chemical plants, equipment manufacturing and chemical industry, respectively. The total emissions of PFOA and PFOS were similar, with amount of 4431 kg and 4335 kg, respectively. Atmospheric deposition was the largest source, accounting for 93.2% of total PFOA and 69.6% of PFOS, respectively. In addition, due to application of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) and sulfluramid, disposal of sewage sludge and stacking of solid waste, emission of PFOA and PFOS to soil was 1617 kg, accounting for 9.29% of the whole China. In general, pollution in Jiangsu, Shandong and Tianjin was more serious than those in Liaoning and Hebei, which was consistent with industrialization level and size of industrial sectors emitting PFASs.

Abstract:In recent decades, China's rapid development has led to significant environmental pollution from the widespread use of chemical products. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are among the most concerning pollutants due to their persistence and bioaccumulation. This article assesses PFAS exposure levels, distribution, and health risks in Chinese blood, environment, and food. Out of 4037 papers retrieved from November 2022 to December 31, 2023, 351 articles met the criteria. Findings show perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) as the main PFAS in both Chinese populations and the environment. The highest PFOA levels in Chinese populations were in Shandong (53.868 ng/mL), while Hubei had the highest PFOS levels (43.874 ng/mL). Similarly, water samples from Sichuan (2115.204 ng/L) and Jiangsu (368.134 ng/L) had the highest PFOA and PFOS levels, respectively. Although localized areas showed high PFAS concentrations. Additionally, developed areas had higher PFAS contamination. The researches conducted in areas such as Qinghai and Hainan remain limited, underscoring the imperative for further investigation. Temporal analysis indicates declining levels of some PFAS, but emerging alternatives require more research. Limited studies on PFAS concentrations in soil, atmosphere, and food emphasize the need for comprehensive research to mitigate human exposure.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are emerging contaminants that pose a threat to the biodiversity of the Beiluo River, a polluted watercourse on the Loess Plateau impacted by diverse human activities. However, the occurrence, spatial distribution, and substitution characteristics of PFASs in this region remain unclear. This study aimed to unravel PFAS distribution patterns and their impact on the aquatic ecosystems of the Beiluo River Basin. The total PFAS concentration in the area ranged from 16.64–35.70 ng/L, with predominantly perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs), collectively contributing 94%. The Mantel test revealed threats to aquatic communities from both legacy long-chain (perfluorooctanoic acid and sodium perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) and emerging (6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid, 2-Perfluorohexyl ethanoic acid, and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (Gen-X)) PFSAs. The canonical correspondence analysis ordination indicated that trace quantities of emerging PFASs, specifically 2-Perfluorohexyl ethanoic acid and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (Gen-X), significantly influenced geographical variations in aquatic communities. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of comprehensively exploring the ecological implications and potential risks associated with PFASs in the Beiluo River Basin.

Abstract:Accompanied with restriction of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), numbers of emerging PFASs are widely detected in the environment. However, information on environmental occurrences and behaviors of emerging PFASs were scarce in agricultural soils. In this study, the spatial distributions, sources, substitution trends and ecological risk assessment of 31 legacy and emerging PFASs were investigated in 69 agricultural soils from Fuxin, North China. The 26 out of 31 PFASs were detected with concentrations of 57.36 - 1271.06 pg/g dry weight. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) were predominant in legacy and emerging PFASs, respectively. Based on principal component and dual carbon-nitrogen stable isotope analysis, atmosphere, fluorochemical activities and river irrigation were main sources of PFASs. Substitution trends indicated HFPO-DA and short chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (C 4 - C 7 ) as main alternatives of PFOA, and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) and sodium p -perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) as major substitutes to perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). The calculated risk quotient values (< 0.006) only indicated potential low ecological risk of 7 target PFASs in agricultural soils. The results of this study broadened out the information of PFAS contamination in agricultural soils, which were significant for PFAS supervision in China.

Abstract:With the phase-out of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), PFAS alternatives have been increasingly used in industrial production and daily life. However, available information on the occurrence of PFASs and PFAS alternatives in semi-enclosed bays remains limited. As a representative semi-enclosed bay in Guangdong Province, China, Shuidong Bay has experienced severe anthropogenic pollution (industrial, shipping, cultural, and domestic) in recent decades. Water pollution in Shuidong Bay has worsened, and PFASs have been identified as ubiquitous environmental pollutants in this bay. In this study, 23 PFASs, including 5 emerging PFASs, were analyzed in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment samples collected from Shuidong Bay. We determined that perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) was the predominant PFAS compound in seawater, whereas 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (FTS) and perfluorooctane sulfonamide acetate (FOSAA) were dominant in SPM and sediment, respectively. The sediment–water partitioning coefficients were greatly dependent on the perfluorinated carbon chain length. Chlorophyll a concentration had a significant effect on the dissolved concentrations of PFASs in seawater. The ecological risk assessment indicated that the PFASs detected in the seawater and sediment samples posed no considerable risks to aquatic organisms. This study provides a valuable reference for evaluating PFAS contamination in Shuidong Bay and conducting ecological risk assessments for aquatic organisms.

Abstract:The contaminant status, spatial distribution, partitioning behavior, and ecological risks of 26 legacy and emerging perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Laizhou Bay, China were investigated. The concentrations of ∑PFASs in surface and bottom seawater ranged from 37.2 to 222 ng/L and from 34.2 to 305 ng/L with an average of 116 ± 62.7 and 138 ± 93.8 ng/L, respectively. There were no significant differences in the average concentrations between the surface and bottom seawater (P > 0.05). Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and short-chain PFASs dominated the composition of PFASs in seawater. The concentrations of ∑PFASs in sediments ranged from 0.997 to 7.21 ng/g dry weight (dw), dominated by perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), and long-chain PFASs. The emerging alternatives of perfluoro-1-butane-sulfonamide (FBSA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) were detected for the first time in Laizhou Bay. The ∑PFASs in seawater in the southwest of the bay were higher than those in the northeast of the bay. The ∑PFASs in sediments in the northeast sea area were higher than those in the inner area of the bay. Log Kd and log Koc values increased with increasing carbon chain length for PFASs compounds. Ecological risk assessments indicated a low ecological risk associated with HFPO-DA but a moderate risk associated with PFOA contamination in Laizhou Bay. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis revealed that fluoropolymer manufacturing, metal plating plants, and textile treatments were identified as major sources contributing to PFASs contamination.

Abstract:A total of 17 groups of wastewaters from the chemical industrial parks and matched receiving river waters were collected in the east of China. The measured total concentrations of 21 analyzed PFAS analogues (∑21PFAS) in the influents and effluents of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were in the range of 0.172-20.6 μg/L (mean: 18.2 μg/L, median: 3.9 μg/L) and 0.167-93.6 μg/L (mean: 10.8 μg/L, median: 1.12 μg/L), respectively, which were significantly higher than those observed in the upstream (range: 0.0158-7.05 μg/L, mean: 1.09 μg/L, median: 0.482 μg/L) and downstream (range: 0.0237-1.82 μg/L, mean: 0.697 μg/L, median: 0.774 μg/L) receiving waters. Despite the concentrations and composition profiles of PFAS varied in the water samples from different sampling sites, PFOA was generally the major PFAS analogue in the research areas, mainly due to the history of PFOA production and usage as well as the specific exemptions. The calculated concentration ratios of the short-chain PFCAs and PFSAs to their respective predecessors (PFOA and PFOS) in most of the samples far exceeded 1, indicating a shift from legacy PFOA and PFOS to short-chain PFAS in the research areas. Correlation network analysis and the calculated concentration ratios of PFAS in the effluents versus influents indicated transformation may have occurred during the water treatment processes and PFAS could not be efficiently removed in the WWTPs. Wastewater discharge of chemical industrial parks is a vital source of PFAS dispersed into the aquatic environment.
Exploring the source, migration and environmental risk of perfluoroalkyl acids and novel alternatives in groundwater beneath fluorochemical industries along the Yangtze River, China

Abstract:The widely used legacy perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) with serious environmental hazards are gradually restricted and being replaced by novel alternatives. Here, for an efficient control of emerging environmental risks in groundwater, we systematically studied the source apportionment, spatial attenuation, composition change and risk zoning of 12 PFAAs and five novel alternatives within a region of ~200 km2 around a mega fluorochemical industrial park (FIP) along the Yangtze River, and in-depth explored potential association between groundwater and soil pollution as well as influencing factors on contaminant migration and risk distribution in the aquifer. Short-chain PFAAs and novel alternatives together accounted for over 70% in groundwater, revealing their prevalence in replacing legacy perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Novel alternatives for PFOA were mainly hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (GenX) and hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA), while those for PFOS were 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTS). PFAAs (maximum total: 1339 ng/L) and novel alternatives (maximum total: 208 ng/L) in groundwater were mostly derived from the FIP, and exhibited an exponentially decreasing trend with increasing distance. Compared with those in groundwater, more diverse sources of PFAAs and novel alternatives in surface soil were identified. The transport of these chemicals may be retarded by clayed surface soils with high organic matter contents. High aquifer permeability could generally promote the dilution and migration of PFAAs and novel alternatives in groundwater, as well as reduce the differences in their spatial distribution. Shorter-chain components with smaller molecules and higher hydrophilicity exhibited greater migration capacities in the aquifer. In addition, different levels of health risk from PFOS and PFOA were zoned based on drinking groundwater, and high risks tended to be distributed in areas with relatively poor aquifer water yield due to higher pollutant accumulation.

Abstract:Fluoropolymer manufacturing is a major historical source of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on a global scale, but little is known about the emissions, transport, and fate of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Here, we performed a comprehensive spatial trend and interyear comparison of surface water and sediment samples from the Xiaoqing River, which receives water discharge from one of the major fluoropolymer manufacturing facilities in China. A suspect screening identified 42 chemical formulas, including the tetramer acid of hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO-TeA) and numerous tentatively detected isomers of C9-C14 per- or polyfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs). As revealed by the spatial trends and peak area-based sediment-water distribution coefficients, emerging PFASs with 3-9 perfluorinated carbons were transported unimpededly with the bulk water flow having no measurable degradation. Emerging PFASs with >9 perfluorinated carbons displayed more rapidly decreasing spatial trends than shorter-chain homologues in surface water due to increasing sedimentation rates. The presence of HFPO oligomers, monoether PFECAs, monohydrogen-substituted perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and monochlorine-substituted PFCAs could partly be explained by the active use of polymerization aids or the impurities therein. However, further research is encouraged to better characterize the emissions of low-molecular-weight PFASs from fluoropolymers throughout their life-cycle.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are an emerging class of contaminants that have been produced since the 1950s. The first report on PFAS to raise global concerns was published in 2001. Since then, many countries have implemented policies to control PFAS. In this study, PFAS in the water, sediment, and biota in coastal areas were surveyed to review their use since their earliest production by using chronological methods combined with previous policy restrictions imposed on PFAS. In the meantime, reports of existing PFAS were evaluated to assess the ecological and health risks of seafood consumption by coastal populations. Following the restrictions on PFAS, the concentrations of PFAS have been decreasing steadily. With regard to the current occurrences of PFAS in water and sediment, there is almost no ecological risk. However, different gender and age groups are still at risk of exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate and require constant monitoring. It is expected that the negative impacts of PFAS on the environment and human health will continue to decrease with the implementation of the emerging pollution control policy by the Chinese government in 2023.
