Abstract:In recent years, visible light assisted advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are appealing in the elimination of pollutants. Herein, an innovative and eco-friendly visible light enhanced Fe3+-nitrilotriacetic acid system for the activation of peroxydisulfate (Vis/Fe3+-NTA/PDS) was proposed for the removal of bisphenol A (BPA). Fe3+-NTA could be dissociated through ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) to realize the generation of Fe2+ for the continuous activation of PDS to remove BPA. The use of 0.10 mM Fe3+, 0.10 mM NTA and 1.00 mM PDS led to 97.5% decay of 0.05 mM BPA and 66.3% of TOC removal in 30 min with the illumination of visible light at initial pH 3.0. The sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were proved to be the dominant species leading to BPA removal by means of radical scavenging experiments, radical probes and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. The effects of various operating parameters, natural water constituents as well as different water matrices on BPA abatement were explored. The intermediate products of BPA degradation were identified and a possible transformation pathway was proposed. Briefly, this research provides an attractive strategy for the remediation of refractory wastewater using NTA assisted with visible light in the homogeneous Fe3+/PDS system.
Efficient degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A using peroxymonosulfate oxidation activated by a novel nano-CuFe 2 O 4 @coconut shell biochar catalyst

Abstract:In this study, a novel bimetallic complexation–curing nucleation–anaerobic calcination method was developed to synthesize a nano-CuFe 2 O 4 @coconut shell biochar (CuFe 2 O 4 @CSBC) catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate for degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). The reaction processes of the TBBPA on CuFe 2 O 4 @CSBC have been investigated using in situ characterization and metal leaching. The effects of initial reaction conditions and degradation mechanism were investigated. Greater than 99% degradation of TBBPA at 10 mg L −1 was achieved in 30 min under the condition of pH 11, a total organic carbon removal rate of up to 70.67% was achieved and the degradation efficiency was 90% after 5 cycles of CuFe 2 O 4 @CSBC use. The degradation was in a second-order reaction at a constant of 0.797 M −1 min −1 (R 2 = 0.993). The degradation was attributed to the main active species (SO 4 · − ≈·OH < 1 O 2 ), and the surface active site of CuFe 2 O 4 @CSBC was the key role. The degradation process involved three main degradation pathways. Path A: ·OH attacked the C–Br bonds (TBBPA→TriBBPA→DBBPA→MBBPA→BPA); Path B: Hydroxylation and decarboxylation; Path C: Dehydrocoupling of TBBPA. What's more, the practical application of the system was very positive, achieved >77% degradation in sewage and industrial wastewater.

Abstract:In recent years, new heterogeneous catalysts derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this work, zeolite imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) and sulfide nanozero-valent iron (S-Fe) were used as precursors to prepare S-Fe/Co bimetallic nanoparticles embedded in graphitized carbon (S-Fe/Co@GC) and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Morphological and structural characterization indicated that S-Fe/Co@GC compared to pre-carbonization, the pore size of the material became larger, formed a graphite carbon skeleton with excellent electrical conductivity. In a 0.2 g/L S-Fe/Co@GC and 0.6 mM PMS system, 96.1% of TBBPA (20 mg/L) was degraded within 30 min, and the degradation yielded a total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 56.2% in 60 min. This excellent catalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of graphitic carbon, sulfide nanozero-valent iron and metallic cobalt. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology indicated that reactive oxygen species (ROS) included HO•, SO4 •−, O2 •− and 1O2, among which O2 •− plays a leading role in the degradation of TBBPA. Based on the LC-MS analysis of the degradation intermediates, the degradation pathway of TBBPA in the S-Fe/Co@GC/PMS system was proposed. In addition, S-Fe/Co@GC showed a low ion leaching rate, and the regenerated S-Fe/Co@GC still had high catalytic performance. This work will extend the development of MOFs encapsulate functional nanoparticle materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Metal-organic frame (MOF) materials can effectively degrade organic pollutants, whereas the MOF is rapidly hydrolysed in water and has poor stability and low reusability. However, in the current advanced oxidation process (AOP) system, the removal effect of pollutants under alkaline condition is not ideal. In this study, a magnetic composite material derived from MOF was synthesised and used as a new catalyst for rapid degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Compared to precarbonisation, FeCo@GC formed a conductive graphite carbon skeleton, retained the complete rhombododecahedron structure, had a larger specific surface area and provided more active sites for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The target pollutant TBBPA (20 mg/L) was completely degraded within 30 min, and the mineralisation rate reached 40.98% in the FeCo@GC (150 mg/L) and PMS (1 mM) systems, owing to the synergistic interaction between Fe, Co and graphite carbon. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the reaction were determined to be SO 4 •− , ·OH, 1 O 2 and O 2 •− by electron paramagnetic resonance and free radical scavenging experiments, and the 1 O 2 played a dominant role. Based on the results of LC-MS analysis results, the main degradation pathways of TBBPA involve three mechanisms: the debromination reaction, hydroxylation and cleavage of the benzene ring. In addition, compared with previous AOP systems, FeCo@GC/PMS overcomes the disadvantage of poor degradation effect of TBPPA under alkaline conditions, has a wide range pH (3–11) application and has the best effect on TBBPA degradation under alkaline conditions. FeCo@GC has an excellent cycle performance, with a removal rate of re-calcined material of 88.52% after five cycles. Therefore, FeCo@GC can be used as a promising and efficient catalyst for removing environmental organic pollutants.

One-step Process for Debromination and Mineralization of Tetrabromobisphenol a by a Layered Double Oxide-Supported Sulfurized Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron under Ambient Conditions

Abstract:Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), currently the most widely used brominated flame retardant, has attracted significant attention. However, traditional methods for deep debromination or mineralization of TBBPA usually include multiple steps and require external oxidants. In this study, we report a complete degradation of TBBPA through a one-step process of only adding a layered double oxide-supported sulfurized nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI@LDO) under ambient conditions. TBBPA was rapidly removed by S-nZVI@LDO with an efficiency of 95.6 % (10 mg & sdot;L-1) within 12 h. The kinetic rate constant (0.0035 min- 1) was greater when compared with traditional reductants. The produced Br- ion occupied 76.7 % of total Br content, and the concentration of total organic carbon decreased by over 50 %, suggesting a deep debromination and mineralization of TBBPA by SnZVI@LDO. It is caused by the substantial improvement of electron transfer, O2 adsorption, and hydrophobicity of S-nZVI@LDO facilitating synchronous reductive debromination and O2 activation to produce & sdot;O2- and & sdot;OH, as approved by electrochemical test, O2-TPO analysis, EPR analysis, and density functional theory calculations. The enriched structural S(-II) and enhanced Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycling exerted vital roles in maintaining the reduction potential of the composite. The degradation pathways analysis confirmed that debrominationmineralization mechanisms dominated the complete degradation of TBBPA. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the one-step mineralization removal of TBBPA only using S-nZVI@LDO under ambient conditions and offers insight into external oxidant-free in-situ elimination of halogenated persistent organic pollutants in a natural environment.
One-Step Synthesized Iron-Carbon Core-Shell Nanoparticles to Activate Persulfate for Effective Degradation of Tetrabromobisphenol A: Performance and Activation Mechanism

Abstract:Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), as an emerging endocrine disrupter, has been considered one of the persistent organic contaminants in water. It is urgently necessary to develop an efficient technique for the effective removal of TBBPA from water. Herein, a one-step hydrothermal synthesis route was employed to prepare a novel iron-carbon core-shell nanoparticle (Fe@MC) for effectively activating persulfate (PS) to degrade TBBPA. Morphological and structural characterization indicated that the prepared Fe@MC had a typical core-shell structure composed of a 5 nm thick graphene-like carbon shell and a multi-valence iron core. It can be seen that 94.9% of TBBPA (10 mg/L) could be degraded within 30 min at pH = 7. This excellent catalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of the porous carbon shell and a multi-valence iron core. The porous carbon shell could effectively prevent the leaching of metal ions and facilitate PS activation due to its electron transfer capability. Furthermore, numerous micro-reaction zones could be formed on the surface of Fe@MC during the rapid TBBPA removal process. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology indicated that reactive oxygen species (ROS), including OH, SO4−, O2−, and 1O2, were involved in the TBBPA degradation process. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the carbon atoms linked by phenolic hydroxyl groups would be more vulnerable to attack by electron-rich groups; the central carbon was cracked and hydroxylated to generate short-chain aliphatic acids. The toxicity evaluation provides clear evidence for the promising application potential of our prepared material for the efficient removal of TBBPA from water.

Evaluation of a sustained-release buccal nitroglycerin preparation in stable angina pectoris.

Abstract:The efficacy of a 2.5 mg sustained-release buccal nitroglycerin preparation given 8-hourly in effort-induced stable angina pectoris was investigated by means of graded exercise testing in 15 patients. An initial double-blind crossover study, compared with a placebo (duration six days) was followed by a further 15-day open treatment period on the active drug. Exercise testing was carried out 2 and 7 h after tablet administration at the conclusion of active treatment in the double-blind phase, and 2 h after tablet administration at the conclusion of the open treatment phase. Workload and exercise duration were significantly increased and mean electrocardiographic ST segment depression and ST segment recovery time significantly reduced by buccal nitroglycerin in the initial phase of the study, and these improvements were maintained over the subsequent 15-day assessment period. Systolic blood pressure at rest was significantly decreased by active treatment; other haemodynamic parameters remained unchanged. The study demonstrated the efficacy of sustained-release buccal nitroglycerin in effort-induced stable angina pectoris, and an absence of (+) tolerance to the therapeutic effects of this mode of nitrate administration.
Coagulation-centered three-step approach for removing by-product organic pollutants from tetrabromobisphenol A industrial wastewater: Experimental and theoretic investigations

Abstract:The challenge of meeting discharge standards for tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) production wastewater, characterized by high concentrations of organic by-products, necessitates effective treatment methods. This study identifies 2,4-dibromophenol, 2,6-dibromophenol, 2,4,6-tribromophenol, chlorobenzene, and toluene as the primary organic by-product pollutants. A coagulation-centered three-step approach was established for TBBPA industrial wastewater treatment. The initial step involves acidification treatment to exploit the reduced solubility of 2,4-dibromophenol, 2,6-dibromophenol, and 2,4,6-tribromophenol under acidic conditions, with the optimal pH determined as 2.7-3.1. An acid-activated montmorillonite coagulant (AMC), prepared through roasting and high-pressure acid leaching, exhibits a distinctive "Core-shell" structure, contributing significantly to the combined coagulation and adsorption mechanism. The acid-soluble aluminum salts in AMC form positively charged flocs, electrostatically attracting negatively charged organic compounds in the wastewater. Simultaneously, the porous insoluble silicon framework displays strong adsorption capacity for pollutants. The removal efficiencies for toluene, chlorobenzene, 2,4-dibromophenol, 2,6-dibromophenol, and 2,4,6-tribromophenol reached 88.2%, 89.1%, 88.8%, 87.1%, and 89.4%, respectively. Elemental analysis reveals that the coloration of the wastewater stems from complexation reactions between phenolic compounds and Fe3+, originating from the corrosion of iron or steel reaction vessel. Post-treatment with cation exchange resin resulted in removal efficiencies of 5.2%, 59.1%, 80.2%, 77.9%, and 88.3% for the five substances, respectively. This study outlines a crucial pathway for the effective purification of TBBPA wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, a sulfate radical-advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP) was proposed by utilizing a bimetallic Co/Fe metal-organic frameworks/cellulose nanofiber membrane (Co/Fe bi-MOFs/CNF) as a catalyst for TBBPA degradation. Sulfate radicals (SO4–) and hydroxyl radicals (OH·) were generated through the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by Co/Fe bi-MOFs/CNF. Co/Fe bi-MOFs/CNF was prepared by a facile solvothermal method and vacuum filtration. CNF acted as a natural substrates material to relieve the agglomeration of loaded MOFs. Additionally the composite membranes was easily separated from the reaction solution. The properties of the composite materials and the main factors that influenced TBBPA degradation were elucidated in detail, along with the TBBPA degradation intermediates, recyclability, and TBBPA degradation pathway. Almost 100 % of TBBPA was degraded within 30 min under optimal conditions, and the rate constant was determined to be 0.764 min−1. Furthermore, the degradation rate of the composite membrane was 60 % after 4 cycles.

Abstract:As a widely used brominated flame retardants (BFRs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has been detected in various environmental matrices and is known to cause negative effects on both the environment and human health. In this study, a combined method was developed for the abatement of TBBPA contaminated soil based on successive steps of solvent extraction (SE) and catalytic hydrodebromination (HDB) over Pd/C. The results showed that TBBPA could be efficiently extracted from the TBBPA contaminated soil with polar solvents. Subsequently, TBBPA could be completely hydrodebrominated over Pd/C in ethanol, via multistep ultimately yielding bisphenol A. Moreover, NaOH, NH3H2O, and Et3N were more favorable to promote the HDB of 4-TBBPA over Pd/C, and 100% bromide atom removal ratio of TBBPA was achieved within 40 min when [NaOH]0/[organic-Br]0 was more than 1.10 in ethanol. However, the catalytic activity of Pd/C decreased with the repeated use in ethanol. To study the mechanism for this phenomenon, fresh and used catalysts were analyzed by characterization techniques including scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). It was found that the deactivation of Pd/C catalyst caused by the gradual accumulation of NaBr could be recovered by washing with water. On the basis of these studies, an effective and practical system for the combined method of SE and catalytic HDB over Pd/C was developed to dispose BFRs contaminated soils.

Abstract:Iron-based catalysts have been widely used to treat refractory organic pollutants in wastewater. In this paper, magnetic Co- γ -Fe 2 O 3 was synthesized by a facile tartaric acid-assisted hydrothermal method, and Co- γ -Fe 2 O 3 /MoS 2 nanocomposite catalyst was obtained via in situ growth of MoS 2 nanosheets on Co- γ -Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. The nanocomposite catalysts were used to decompose bisphenol A (BPA) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). It was shown that only 0.15 g/L catalyst and 0.5 mmol/L PMS degraded 10 mg/L of BPA (99.3% within 10 min) in the pH range of 3–9. PMS was activated due to redox cycling among the pairs Co(III)/Co(II), Fe(III)/Fe(II), and Mo(VI)/Mo(IV). Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated that both radical and non-radical pathways were involved in BPA degradation, in which active radical sulfate radical and non-radical singlet oxygen were the main reactive oxygen species. Ten intermediates were identified by liquid chromatography-coupled mass spectrometry, and three possible BPA degradation pathways were proposed. The toxicity of several degradation intermediates was lower, and Co- γ -Fe 2 O 3 /MoS 2 exhibited excellent reusability and could be magnetically recovered.

Abstract:In this work, a novel combined system by Fe-Ag or Fe-Ni nanoparticles and microwave (MW) radiation were used for the debromination of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in aqueous solutions. Core-shell structure bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by replacement reaction in liquid phase and then characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. MW radiation can enhance the degradation of TBBPA by Fe-Ag or Fe-Ni observably. The rate of reduction reactions for bimetallic nanoparticles under MW were first compared with those under conventional heating conditions. Compared with nano-iron, the deposition of Ag or Ni also accelerated the debromination, and Fe-Ag was more reactive than Fe-Ni toward TBBPA reduction. Removal efficiencies increased with increasing Fe-Ag dosage and MW energy level. Major reduction products of TBBPA identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) were tri-BBPA, di-BBPA, mono-BBPA, and BPA, which indicated a stepwise debromination process. It provides an effective technology for TBBPA laden wastewater treatment.

Abstract:As the most commonly used flame retardant, the mass production and use of TBBPA have caused extensive environmental pollution, and its green and efficient degradation was a key challenge for current research. Hence, we synthesized a pure silica-based Mobilization Filter (MFI) molecular sieve doped with Fe atoms (Fe@S-1) for peroxydisulfate (PDS)-activated degradation of TBBPA. The Fe@S-1/PDS system showed excellent removal efficiencies for TBBPA with removal ratios ranging 98.9 % and k values 0.497 min −1 . Characterization analysis proved that the Fe@S-1 have mesoporous structures with intergranular and intragranular interconnections with nanoconfinement effect, the in situ incorporation through the synthesis process of abundant highly dispersed and valency-controlled framework Fe(II)/(III) species can achieved rapid activation of free radicals. In the spatial confinement mediated fenton-like reaction system, the enhanced utilization of oxidative free radicals and also exhibited remarkably higher reaction kinetics (6.05 times faster) toward TBBPA than its nonconfined analog. In addition, the catalyst showed good catalytic stability in the cyclability test, no significant loss of activity and minimal metal leaching were shown in a 96 h run. Finally, TBBPA degradation capacity of the catalyst was evaluated under the influence of common anions and in the actual water body and the possible degradation pathways of TBBPA were proposed. This work provided a new idea for the design of structurally doped catalysts for TBBPA degradation.

Abstract:Degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a flame retardant widely spread in the environment, in Co(II) catalyzed peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation process was systematically explored. The second-order-rate constant for reaction of sulfate radical (SO4(-)) with TBBPA was determined to be 5.27×10(10)M(-1)s(-1). Apparently, degradation of TBBPA showed first-order kinetics to the concentrations of both Co(II) and PMS. The presence of humic acid (HA) and bicarbonate inhibited TBBPA degradation, most likely due to their competition for SO4(-). Degradation of TBBPA was initiated by an electron abstraction from one of the phenolic rings. Detailed transformation pathways were proposed, including β-scission of isopropyl bridge, phenolic ring oxidation, debromination and coupling reactions. Further oxidative degradation of intermediates in Co(II)/PMS process yielded brominated disinfection by-products (Br-DBPs) such as bromoform and brominated acetic acids. Evolution profile of Br-DBPs showed an initially increasing and then decreasing pattern with maximum concentrations occurring around 6-10h. The presence of HA enhanced the formation of Br-DBPs significantly. These findings reveal potentially important, but previously unrecognized, formation of Br-DBPs during sulfate radical-based oxidation of bromide-containing organic compounds that may pose toxicological risks to human health.
Enhanced degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A by Fe3+/sulfite process under simulated sunlight irradiation

Abstract:Degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), an emerging micropollutant, by photo/Fe3+/sulfite process was investigated under different operational conditions and water matrices. 91% of TBBPA was efficiently degraded within 30 min in the Fe3+/sulfite system under sunlight irradiation when the initial pH was 6.0, which is much higher than that of TBBPA without irradiation (52%). The acceleration of radical generation and direct photolysis by photo irradiation were responsible for the enhanced TBBPA degradation. Although this process showed better performance on TBBPA degradation in weak acid conditions, the high removal efficiency was also achieved at near-neutral pH. HO, SO4− and direct photolysis contributed to TBBPA degradation. Direct photolysis and SO4− presented the dominant contribution. The degradation rate increased with elevating the Fe3+ dose (10–40 μM), but slightly decreased when the Fe3+ dose was further raised to 100 μM. Similarly, the degradation efficiency initially increased with increasing the sulfite dose (100–400 μM), but decreased when the sulfite concentration reached 1000 μM. Dissolved oxygen played a crucial role in TBBPA degradation, the presence of water matrices such as humic acid (0.8–4.0 mg/L), bicarbonate (0.5–10 mM) and chloride (0.5–10 mM) retarded TBBPA degradation. This study proposed a new efficient strategy to enhance TBBPA degradation in the Fe3+/sulfite process.

Abstract:In this research, the CuFe2O4-CoFe2O4 metallic oxides catalyst (donated as CCF) was synthesized by solvothermal method and applied to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The different influences containing initial PMS concentration, pH, catalyst dosage, coexisting ions and reaction temperature on the degradation efficiency of BPA were systematically investigated. The CCF exhibited 99.3% removal efficiency and 72.5% mineralization of BPA. Notably, compared with the reported metallic catalysts, CCF exhibited much lower amount of metal leaching during the degradation process. The superior catalytic activity and stability of CCF was attributed to the synergistic effects of Co2+/Co3+, Cu+/Cu2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycles. The SO4 •− and •OH were detected by chemical scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests while SO4 •− might play a dominant role for BPA degradation. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanism was proposed and analyzed the toxicity of reaction system. The toxicity of BPA and its oxidation intermediates were predicted by ECOSAR model and activity inhibition experiments to demonstrate that BPA was ultimately mineralized as a non-toxic product. This study suggests that the prepared CCF is an efficient and environmentally friendly catalyst for activating PMS, which has an enormous potential application in practical waste water treatment.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) has received increasing attention due to its long-term industrial application and persistence in environmental pollution. Iron-based carbon catalyst activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) shows a good prospect for effective elimination of recalcitrant contaminants in water. Herein, considering the problem about the leaching of iron ions and the optimization of heteroatoms doping, the iron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped tremella-like carbon catalyst (Fe-NS@C) was rationally designed using very little iron, S-C3N4 and low-cost chitosan (CS) via the impregnation-calcination method. The as-prepared Fe-NS@C exhibited excellent performance for complete removal of BPA (20 mg/L) by activating PMS with the high kinetic constant (1.492 min-1) in 15 min. Besides, the Fe-NS@C/PMS system not only possessed wide pH adaptation and high resistance to environmental interference, but also maintained an excellent degradation efficiency on different pollutants. Impressively, increased S-C3N4 doping amount modulated the contents of different N species in Fe-NS@C, and the catalytic activity of Fe-NS@C-1-x was visibly enhanced with increasing S-C3N4 contents, verifying pyridine N and Fe-Nx as main active sites in the system. Meanwhile, thiophene sulfur (C-S-C) as active sites played an auxiliary role. Furthermore, quenching experiment, EPR analysis and electrochemical test proved that surface-bound radicals (·OH and SO4⋅-) and non-radical pathways worked in the BPA degradation (the former played a dominant role). Finally, possible BPA degradation route were proposed. This work provided a promising way to synthesize the novel Fe, N and S co-doping carbon catalyst for degrading organic pollutants with low metal leaching and high catalytic ability.

Abstract:Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a common brominated flame retardant and a notorious pollutant in anaerobic environments, resists aerobic degradation but can undergo reductive dehalogenation to produce bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor. Conversely, BPA is resistant to anaerobic biodegradation but susceptible to aerobic degradation. Microbial degradation of TBBPA via anoxic/oxic processes is scarcely documented. We established an anaerobic microcosm for TBBPA dehalogenation to BPA facilitated by humin. Dehalobacter species increased with a growth yield of 1.5 × 10 8 cells per μmol Br - released, suggesting their role in TBBPA dehalogenation. We innovatively achieved complete and sustainable biodegradation of TBBPA in sand/soil columns columns, synergizing TBBPA reductive dehalogenation by anaerobic functional microbiota and BPA aerobic oxidation by Sphingomonas sp. strain TTNP3. Over 42 days, 95.11 % of the injected TBBPA in three batches was debrominated to BPA. Following injection of strain TTNP3 cells, 85.57 % of BPA was aerobically degraded. Aerobic BPA degradation column experiments also indicated that aeration and cell colonization significantly increased degradation rates. This treatment strategy provides valuable technical insights for complete TBBPA biodegradation and analogous contaminants.

Abstract:Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a hazardous and persistent flame retardant, has been widely detected in the natural aquatic system. The acceleration of reductive debromination (rate-limiting process) is vital during the decomposition and detoxification of TBBPA. This study achieved superior TBBPA electrochemical reductive debromination performance by nano Pd doped Ni foam electrode (4.8 times higher than Ni foam electrode). The optimal TBBPA reductive debromination performance was obtained under −1.2 V of cathode potential, 1.2 wt% of Pd loading, 10 mg L −1 of TBBPA and 100 mM of Na 2 SO 4 as the electrolyte solution. UPLC-QTOF-MS verified that Br atoms in TBBPA were removed sequentially to form bisphenol A as the major product. Most TBBPA was reductively debrominated by atomic H* through indirect hydrodebromination, evidenced by the atomic H* quenching test. The higher solution conductivity and appropriate TBBPA concentration would contribute to the debromination efficiency. Excessive H 2 generation whether by over negative potential or H atom richness electrolyte largely disturbed the reaction process and restricted the debromination. The improved generation of reductant (H*) ads Pd was the most significant, while excessive Pd loading would make aggregation and limit the debromination efficiency. The study confirmed the optimization strategies of conditions for Pd/Ni foam electrode and revealed the related function mechanism for stimulating TBBPA electrochemical reduction, giving suggestions for the efficient removal of TBBPA in the aquatic environment.
