Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) pollution has become an emerging threat to the aquatic environment and its organisms. The removal of NPs from contaminated water is a global challenge. In this study, an efficient and reusable composite was prepared from cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) modified magnetic biochar. The performances of CTAB modified magnetic biochar (CMB) to remove polystyrene (PS) and carboxylate-modified polystyrene (CPS) nanoparticles from water were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the PS and CPS removal performance of magnetic biochar was improved by CTAB modification. These increases were assigned to the increase in the surface hydrophobicity of CMB. Due to the strong electrostatic repulsion between the nanoparticles, PS and CPS maintained high stability in alkaline conditions, resulting in a significant decrease in removal efficiency. The removal efficiency was decreased to 67.4% for PS and to 40.7% for CPS at pH 11. The inhibition effects of NaCl on the PS and CPS removal efficiencies were decreased gradually with the increase of NaCl concentration. Among the anions studied, H2PO4- had the biggest impact on the removal performance of CMB. Besides, CMB could be used to remove PS and CPS in real surface water, and the removal efficiencies of PS and CPS were 95.3% and 97.8%, respectively. Particularly, the removal efficiencies of PS and CPS were 90.2% for PS and 94.8% for CPS when CMB was recycled five times. According to the characterization results of XRD, TGA, SEM, FTIR and XPS, PS and CPS nanoparticles were removed by CMB from water mainly through aggregation instead of adsorption. The efficient removal of PS and CPS by CMB via aggregation process offers new insight into the removal of NPs from aquatic environment.

Abstract:The strong toxicity of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) have spurred great interests in developing an effective technology to remove it from water. In this study, a cost-effective and recyclable composite nano-cerium oxide functionalized peanut shell biochar (BC-Ce) was synthetized via impregnation-precipitation-pyrolysis process and employed for simultaneous adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) in water. The BC-Ce possessed better Cr(VI) adsorption potential, and its maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir achieved 47.83 mg g- 1. Simultaneously, the as-prepared composite displayed obvious reduction behavior for Cr(VI) and partially adsorbed Cr(VI) was reduced to less toxic Cr(III). The effects of composite dosage (0.2-4 g L-1), initial Cr(VI) concentration (20-200 mg L-1) and pH (3-9) on Cr(VI) removal were also investigated. Characterization results indicated that the Cr(VI) reduction induced by BC-Ce was mainly attributed to the comprehensive effect of oxygen-containing functional group (OFGs), carbon-centered persistent free radicals (PFRs), oxygen vacancies and graphitic structure in BC-Ce. The CeO2 supported on the surface of BC facilitated the generation of more OFGs (phenolic-OH and C-O), PFRs and oxygen vacancies, thus provided abundant sites for chemical reduction of Cr(VI). Moreover, the graphitic structure in BC-Ce promoted the transfer of electrons from graphite carbon to Cr (VI). This study provided a new insight into the removal mechanisms of Cr(VI) in water by BC-Ce. Except for the adsorption, the reduction behavior during Cr(VI) removal process by BC-based materials should not be overlooked.

Abstract:The release of microplastics (MPs) especially those with sizes less than 10 μm from effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is one of the major sources of plastics into aquatic environment. To reduce the discharge of MPs into environment, it is essential to further enhance their removal efficiencies in WWTPs. In present study, to boost the removal performance of MPs in sand filtration systems (units that commonly employed in WWTPs to remove colloidal pollutants), six types of biochar fabricated from three raw biomass materials (i.e. lignin, cellulose, and woodchips) at two pyrolysis temperatures (400 °C and 700 °C) was respectively amended into sand columns as thin permeable layer. We found that adding all six types of biochar into sand columns as thin permeable layer could greatly improve the retention of MPs with the diameter of 1 μm under either slow (4 m/d) or fast flow rates (160 m/d) due to the high adsorption capability of biochar. Woodchip-derived biochar exhibited the highest MPs retention performance, which was followed by cellulose-derived biochar and then lignin-derived biochar. Moreover, for biochar derived from three raw biomasses, increasing pyrolysis temperature could improve MPs retention performance. The direct observation of real-time plastics retention processes on different types of biochar via a visible flow chamber showed that woodchip-derived biochar especially that fabricated at 700 °C exhibited more MPs trapping processes relative to lignin and cellulose-derived biochar due to their more complex surface morphology. Thus, the highest MPs retention performance was achieved in sand columns with amendment by 1 wt% woodchip-derived biochar fabricated at 700 °C. More importantly, we found that for these modified sand filtration column systems, complete MPs removal could be achieved in real river water and actual sewage water, in multiple filtration cycles, longtime filtration process (100 pore volumes injection) as well as with interval flow conditions. Moreover, biochar could be regenerated and reused as thin permeable layer to effectively remove MPs. The results of this study clearly showed that biochar especially woodchip-derived biochar fabricated at 700 °C had the potential to immobilize MPs especially those with small sizes in WWTPs.

Abstract:AbstractMicroplastics’ (MPs) pollution removal from water bodies has become an urgent task to ensure water quality safety and water ecological security on a global scale. In this work, coprecipitation was employed to investigate the adsorption of MPs by magnetic biochar (MRB) prepared from agricultural waste rice husks in an aquatic system. The results showed that MRB can adsorb up to 99.96% of MPs in water; acidic conditions were favorable for the effective MPs’ adsorption reaction, and competing anions had a greater effect on adsorption. The adsorption mechanism results revealed that the adsorption of MPs by MRB was a spontaneous process, and electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions were present in the adsorption process. Furthermore, after the adsorption of MPs, MRB can be recovered by thermal treatment (500 °C) and still exhibits up to 90% MPs adsorption (after four uses). This work reveals that MRB is an inexpensive, efficient, and reusable nanoscale adsorbent for MPs pollution removal in water, which may provide new ideas for microplastic pollution control in the aqueous environment.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The efficient removal and degradation of microplastics are critical for protecting aquatic ecosystems. Herein, Fe-modified magnetic biochar (MBC) was synthesized as an adsorbent for removing microplastics in water. The effects of lignin/Fe salt mass ratios, adsorbent amount, adsorption time, adsorption temperature, solution pH, and presence of coexisting anions on adsorption efficiency were investigated. The thermal degradation behaviour and recycling characteristic of microplastics was also explored. Results showed that MBC has a developed pore structure, superparamagnetic property, and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. The removal efficiency of polystyrene microplastics using MBC-11 was 99 %, with an adsorption capacity of 68.57 mg/g, which was 25 times higher than that of unmodified lignin biochar. The kinetics of the adsorption process followed the pseudo-first kinetic model, and the equilibrium data best fitted the Freundlich model. Thermodynamic results confirmed that adsorption over MBC was a spontaneous, heat-absorbing, and entropy-increasing process. The adsorption mechanism of PS by biochar was mainly via electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions and pore throttle. The thermal-degradation products of PS were mainly hydrocarbons, including styrene, benzene, and toluene, owing to the enhanced β-scission, H-shift, and methylation reactions at MBC catalytic sites. This study provides a scientific basis for the development of control technologies for microplastics removal in water.

Abstract:Nanoplastics, characterized by their small size, high diffusion, and stability, have attracted wide attention worldwide as a new potentially threatening pollutant. In this study, magnetic rice straw biochar modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was prepared and utilized for the adsorption removal of polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs, <100 nm). The characteristics and adsorption performance of CTAB modified magnetic biochar (MBC-CTAB) were systematically investigated using characterization techniques and batch adsorption experiments. The grafting of alkyl chains onto the biochar surface through surfactant modification improved the surface activity and adsorption capacity of the magnetic biochar towards nanoplastics. Moreover, the application of an external magnetic field facilitated the rapid separation and recovery of MBC-CTAB. MBC-CTAB exhibited a removal efficiency of 99.56 % for 20 mg/L PSNPs, with a maximal adsorption capacity of 54.07 mg/g at 298 K. The presence of anions such as HPO 4 2− and CO 3 2− as well as dissolved organic compounds like humic acid creates significant competition between PSNPs, thereby inhibiting the adsorption capacity of MBC-CTAB towards PSNPs. The mechanism of MBC-CTAB for nanoplastics adsorption can be attributed to electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interactions, pore filling, and surface complexation. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using surfactant-modified biochar for the adsorption of nanoplastics, providing a promising option for the development of new pollutant treatment technologies and the mitigation of the adverse impacts of nanoplastics on the environment and ecosystems.

Abstract:Nanoplastic has become a prominent threat to the aquatic ecosystem, and the cost-effective technologies for controlling that are still insufficient. The aim of this study is to use contaminated corncobs collected in mining area to prepare functional mesoporous biochar (MBC) and to investigate its ability to remove polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) from water. The adsorption of PSNPs by MBC could be better described by the Sips isotherm and followed the second-order kinetics, with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of MBC for PSNPs was 56.02 mg·g−1. Then the PSNPs adsorbed on MBC could be hydrothermally degraded and the biochar could be simultaneously regenerated. The ability was affected by various factors, including oxygen-containing functional groups, metallic components, superoxide radicals and holes. The degradation products were dominated as low-molecule-weight oligomers and the main possible pathways involved scission, hydrolysis and radical reaction. The findings highlight the great potential of biochar prepared using contaminated biowaste in mining area to remove the nanoplastic pollutants in the aqueous environment.

Abstract:In recent years, filamentous algae blooms and microplastics (MPs) pollution have become two major ecological and environmental problems in urban water systems. In order to solve these two problems at the same time, this study explored the loading capacity of MPs on fresh filamentous algae, and successfully synthesized magnetic filamentous algae biochar loading with Fe 3 O 4 by hydrothermal method, with the purpose of removing MPs from water. The magnetic filamentous algal biochar was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and so on. Experiments on adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and optimum pH were carried out to explore the adsorption mechanism of MPs on magnetic filamentous algal biochar. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models were evaluated, and the selection criterion for the appropriate model was determined by using the residual sum of squares (RSS) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). Microscope images revealed that fresh filamentous algae could interact with MPs in the form of entanglement, adhesion and encapsulation. The average load of MPs in filamentous algae samples was 14.1 ± 5 items/g dry weight. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) by raw biochar (A500) and magnetic biochar with Fe 3 O 4 (M2A500) were 176.99 mg/g and 215.58 mg/g, respectively. The adsorbent materials gave better reusability because they could be reused up to five times. Overall, these findings have provided new insights into the use of filamentous algae for in situ remediation of fluvial MPs pollution, as well as feasible strategies for the recycling of algal waste.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) has emerged as a potential solution to phosphate removal from wastewater primarily resulting from global overuse of fertilizers. Further modification by embedment of iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) oxides on BC can enhance phosphate removal; however, the modification method serves as a vital factor underlying distinctive removal performances and mechanisms, which have yet been systematically examined. Herein, two Fe-Mn modified BC, Fe/MnBC (comprised of Fe3O4 and MnO2) and Fe-MnBC (comprised of MnFe2O4), were comprehensively investigated for gaining insights into the unsolved perspectives. The results indicated that Fe-MnBC exhibited a markedly greater maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 135.88 mg g-1 than that of Fe/MnBC with 17.93 mg g-1. The comparative results based on microstructure and spectroscopic analyses suggested that different Fe and Mn oxides were successfully loaded, which played a distinctive role in phosphate removal. Further characterizations unveiled that the key mechanisms for phosphate removal by Fe/MnBC are inner-sphere complexation and precipitation, while electrostatic interaction and outer-sphere complexation are the dominant mechanisms underlying the notable performance of Fe-MnBC. The delicately designed Fe-MnBC with special structure and property also enabled a superior regeneration capacity, which presented a promisingly high phosphate removal efficacy of over 81.34% after five cycles. These results enhance comprehension regarding the impact of biochar modification techniques on phosphate removal, offering positive indications for the remediation of excessive phosphate and other pollutant-containing water through feasible design and green chemicals.
Nano zero-valent iron loaded corn-straw biochar for efficient removal of hexavalent chromium: remediation performance and interfacial chemical behaviour

Abstract:To improve the poor stability of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), corn-straw biochar (BC) was used as a support for the synthesis of composites of nZVI-biochar (nZVI/BC) in different mass ratios. After a thorough characterization, the obtained nZVI/BC composite was used to remove hexavalent chromium [Cr( VI )] in an aquatic system under varying conditions including composite amount, Cr( VI ) concentration, and pH. The obtained results show that the treatment efficiency varied in the following order: nZVI–BC (1 : 3) > nZVI–BC (1 : 5) > nZVI alone > BC alone. This order indicates the higher efficiency of composite material and the positive effect of nZVI content in the composite. Similarly, the composite dosage and Cr( VI ) concentration had significant effects on the removal performance and 2 g L −1 and 6 g L −1 were considered to be the optimum dose at a Cr( VI ) concentration of 20 mg L −1 and 100 mg L −1 , respectively. The removal efficiency was maximum (100%) at pH 2 whereas solution pH increased significantly after the reaction (from 2 to 4.13). The removal kinetics of Cr( VI ) was described by a pseudo-second-order model which indicated that the removal process was mainly controlled by the rate of chemical adsorption. The thermodynamics was more in line with the Freundlich model which indicated that the removal was multi-molecular layer adsorption. TEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS were applied to characterize the crystal lattice and structural changes of the material to specify the interfacial chemical behaviour on the agent surface. These techniques demonstrate that the underlying mechanisms of Cr( VI ) removal include adsorption, chemical reduction–oxidation reaction, and co-precipitation on the surface of the nZVI–BC composite. The results indicated that the corn-straw BC as a carrier material highly improved Cr( VI ) removal performance of nZVI and offered better utilization of the corn straw.

Abstract:Zero valent iron-loaded biochar (Fe0-BC) has shown promise for the removal of various organic pollutants, but is restricted by reduced specific surface area, low utilization efficiency and limited production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, iron carbide-loaded activated biochar (Fe3C-AB) with a high surface area was synthesized through the pyrolysis of H3PO4 activated biochar with Fe(NO3)3, tested for removing bisphenol A (BPA) and elucidated the adsorption and degradation mechanisms. As a result, H3PO4 activated biochar was beneficial for the transformation of Fe0 to Fe3C. Fe3C-AB exhibited a significantly higher removal rate and removal capacity for BPA than that of Fe0-BC within a wide pH range of 5.0-11.0, and its performance was maintained even under extremely high salinity and different water sources. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectra and density functional theory calculations confirmed that hydrogen bonds were formed between the COOH groups and BPA. 1O2 was the major reactive species, constituting 37.0% of the removal efficiency in the degradation of BPA by Fe3C-AB. Density functional reactivity theory showed that degradation pathway 2 of BPA was preferentially attacked by ROS. Thus, Fe3C-AB with low cost and excellent recycling performance could be an alternative candidate for the efficient removal of contaminants.
Preparation and application of metal-modified biochar in the purification of micro-polystyrene polluted aqueous environment

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have already spread across the globe and have been found in drinking water and human tissues. This may pose severe threats to human health and water environment. Therefore, this study accurately evaluated the removal effect of metal-modified biochar on polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) (1.0 μm) in the water environment using a high-throughput fluorescence quantification method. The results indicated that Fe-modified biochar (FeBC) and Fe/Zn-modified biochar (Fe/ZnBC) had good removal efficiencies for PS-MPs under the dosage of 3 g/L, which were 96.24% and 84.77%, respectively. Although pore effects were observed (such as "stuck", "trapped"), the electrostatic interaction was considered the main mechanism for the adsorption of PS-MPs on metal-modified biochar, whereas the formation of metal-O-PS-MPs may also contribute to the adsorption process. The removal efficiency of PS-MPs by FeBC was significantly reduced under alkaline conditions (pH = 9 and 11) or in the presence of weak acid ions (PO 4 3− , CO 3 2− , HCO 3 − ). A removal efficiency of 72.39% and 78.33% of PS-MPs was achieved from tap water (TW) and lake water (LW) using FeBC when the initial concentration was 20 mg/L. However, FeBC had no removal effect on PS-MPs in biogas slurry (BS) and brewing wastewater (BW) due to the direct competitive adsorption of high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The findings of this study highlighted that metal-modified biochar had a potential application in purifying tap water or lake water which contaminated by MPs.

Abstract:Biochar is being increasingly used in the remediation of aquatic environments given its unique physicochemical properties. Biochar can coexist with various other nanoparticles in the environment and thus have a combined effect on susceptible organisms. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of corn stover biochar prepared at different temperatures to Chlorella vulgaris alone and in combination with polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs, PS-COOH NPs, and PS-NH 2 NPs) or silver nanoparticles embedded in sodium citrate (CIT-Ag NPs). Inorganic phosphorus promoted algal growth, while small organic molecules were important for the biotoxicity of the biochar. Biochar affected algal cell growth through mechanisms such as disruption of cell membrane integrity, generating oxidative stress, and affecting chlorophyll a synthesis. Biochar mitigated the toxicity of nanoplastics/silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to C. vulgaris by increasing the algal cell membrane integrity, reducing ROS production, and increasing the chlorophyll a content of algal cells. The conclusions from the study were i) the substantial binding of biochar and nanoplastics/Ag NPs is due to electrostatic interactions and mutual adsorption, thereby reducing the number of dispersed nanoparticles; ii) there is competitive adsorption of both biochar and nanoplastics/Ag NPs on C. vulgaris , with biochar being dominant. In summary, biochar possesses environmental biotoxicity, but it has a noticeable mitigating effect on other, more toxic nanomaterials and is therefore an important factor in the biosafety of biochar materials.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have been attracting wide attention. Biochar (BC) application could improve the soil quality in the contaminated soil. Currently, most studies focused on the effect of MPs or BC on the soil properties and microbial community, while they neglected the combined effects. This study investigated the combined effects of BC or ball-milled BC (BM) and polyethylene plastic fragments (PEPFs) and degradable plastic fragments (DPFs) on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalate esters (PAEs) from the PAH-contaminated soil and the potential microbial ecological mechanisms. The results showed that BC or BM combined with PEPF could accelerate the removal of PAHs and PAEs. PEPF combined with BM had the most significant effect on the removal of PAHs. Our results indicating two potential possible reasons contribute to increasing the removal of organic pollutants: (1) the high sorption rate on the PEPF and BC and (2) the increased PAH-degrader or PAE-degrader abundance for the removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Due to their widespread distribution, microplastics (MPs) are endangering the soil ecological environment system, causing water pollution and altering the soil's physicochemical and microbiological features. Because of its unique pore structure and strong stability, biochar is widely used as an adsorbent. However, the effects of MP–biochar interactions in water and soil environment are still unclear. This review outlines the application and mechanism of biochar as an adsorbent in a water environment for the removal of MPs. Also, biochar serves as remediation material for MPs in soils as it mitigates the adverse effects of MPs on soil properties, enzyme activities and soil microbial community. It was found that woody biochar had the highest yield and was more effective in adsorbing MPs. Further research should focus on the combined effects of biochar and MPs, the environmental risks of biochar, the modification of biochar application of MP-removal technologies, the characterization of MP properties, the remediation of combined contamination of MPs and other pollutants, and the transportation of MPs.

Abstract:Biochar can be served as a substrate for immobilizing bimetallic particles and applied in the pollutant removal, however, its specific role and mediated electron shuttle mechanism against 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) have not been elucidated. In this study, biochar loaded with Fe/Ni bimetallic nanoparticles (BC@Fe/Ni) was optimally synthesized, and its dechlorination performance, pathway and mechanism towards 2,4-DCP were investigated. The results showed that BC@Fe/Ni was more effective compared to Fe/Ni nanoparticles in the 2,4-DCP removal due to its well-dispersed Fe/Ni nanoparticles and increased electron-shuttling capability. The optimal parameters for 2,4-DCP removal by BC@Fe/Ni were assessed, the highest removal efficiency equivalent to 50 mg L −1 of 2,4-DCP was achieved at pH 4.0 with a dosage of 2 g L −1 . The 2,4-DCP removal was an adsorption-dechlorination-adsorption pathway, primarily through para-Cl elimination, ortho-Cl elimination and finally phenol adsorption. The removal mechanism of 2,4-DCP by BC@Fe/Ni may involve the 2,4-DCP reductive dechlorination by nZVI, atomic hydrogen and biochar-mediated electron transfer, and final adsorption by biochar. In summary, this study demonstrates that biochar is a promising electron shuttle for immobilizing bimetallic particles and serves as a reference for the dechlorination mechanism of chlorinated organic pollutants by biochar-based bimetallic nanomaterials.

Abstract:Anthropogenic enrichment of phosphorus (P) in water environment can cause eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and water quality deterioration. Adsorbents are often used for the removal and recovery of P from water, however, P is highly susceptible to re-release in anoxic benthic environments. As a response, this study prepared oxygen-carrying iron-rich biochar (O-Fe-BC) as an effective oxygen micro-nanobubble carrier ( Q = 8.7024 cm3/g STP at 1.5 MPa) and P adsorbent (q m = 16.7097 mg P/g, q 0.1 = 3.1974 mg P/g). Over the 90-day experimental period with O-Fe-BC, dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the overlying water could maintain at ∼4 mg/L (peaking at ∼9.5 mg/L), and total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) levels decreased by over 96 %. The higher inorganic phosphorus content in the surface sediment-biochar mixture, along with the lower labile P and Fe concentration in the sediment pore water in the O-Fe-BC group compared to other groups, suggested the enhanced P immobilization. Further mechanism exploration revealed the combined roles of adsorption and microbial response, in which O-Fe-BC achieved efficient phosphate adsorption primarily through inner-sphere complexation via ligand exchange and keystone taxa (particularly Candidatus Electronema) played a crucial role in driving water chemistry divergence. Specially, these cable bacteria could provide large pools of Fe oxides in the surface sediment, binding with P to prevent its release, as supported by significant correlations between Ca. Electronema abundance and oxidation–reduction potential (ORP), TP, SRP, and sediment Fe-P variations. Additionally, a pot experiment with mung bean seedlings showed that the recovered O-Fe-BC significantly promoted the seed germination and growth, indicating its potential as a novel material for removing and recovering P from eutrophic waters. Taken together, our work provided a promising strategy for sustainable anoxia and P pollution mitigation, and also highlighted the indispensable roles of inner-sphere adsorption in P recovery and microbial keystone taxa in P cycling regulation.

Abstract:To cope with the widespread polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) pollution in the global aquatic environment, this study prepared an acid-modified biochar adsorbent derived from sludge with satisfactory performance. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of the adsorbent for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were determined to be 72.17 and 45.88 mg·g–1, respectively. The theoretical calculation of the adsorption of biochar surface functional groups with PFOS and PFOA was first performed in this study, and the mechanism of the adsorption process was inferred with a combination of experimental results and redundancy analysis. The adsorption mechanism is composed mainly of the following three aspects: (I) electrostatic interaction between the positively charged biochar and the deprotonated PFAS; (II) hydrogen bonding between anionic species of PFAS and functional groups; and (III) hydrophobic interaction between long-chain hydrophobic PFAS and biochar. Electrostatic interaction plays a major role in the three main adsorption mechanisms under acidic media. Meanwhile, different functional groups have different adsorption energies for PFAS, and CO has the highest adsorption energy. The findings in this work could provide great insights into the adsorption of PFAS on modified biochar as an environmentally friendly adsorbent to promote resource reuse, improve water quality, and ensure human health.

Abstract:The performance of underwater acoustic target recognition system decreases significantly mainly due to the complex underwater acoustic conditions. Nevertheless, human auditory system is capable of segregating different targets in noisy conditions. Several auditory-based features have been applied to underwater acoustic target recognition, but only represent amplitude of the signal. However, phase represented by the instantaneous frequency (IF) might also contain some information to distinguish different targets. In this paper, a novel feature extraction method based on the Gammatone filterbank and instantaneous frequency is applied to robust underwater acoustic target recognition. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) is employed as the classifier in experiments. Experimental results indicate that the novel feature extraction method has a robust performance than conventional methods for underwater acoustic target recognition.

Abstract:The omnipresent micro/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) in urban waters arouse great public concern. To build a MP/NP-free urban water system, enormous efforts have been made to meet this goal via separating and degrading MPs/NPs in urban waters. Herein, we comprehensively review the recent developments in the separation and degradation of MPs/NPs in urban waters. Efficient MP/NP separation techniques, such as adsorption, coagulation/flocculation, flotation, filtration, and magnetic separation are first summarized. The influence of functional materials/reagents, properties of MPs/NPs, and aquatic chemistry on the separation efficiency is analyzed. Then, MP/NP degradation methods, including electrochemical degradation, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), photodegradation, photocatalytic degradation, and biological degradation are detailed. Also, the effects of critical functional materials/organisms and operational parameters on degradation performance are discussed. At last, the current challenges and prospects in the separation, degradation, and further upcycling of MPs/NPs in urban waters are outlined. This review will potentially guide the development of next-generation technologies for MP/NP pollution control in urban waters.
