Abstract:Introduction: Adolescence is a stage of physical, psychological, and social changes, which determine the personality of the individual, which can be influenced by physical appearance because of alterations in the skin texture of adolescents. Patients with dermatosis have a higher risk of developing depression, anxiety and suicidal ideas. Acne is an important factor for quality of life and affects adolescents both physically and psychosocially. Objective : To determine the factors associated with the repercussions of acne in adolescents in Honduras. Methodology: Analytical cross-sectional study. The Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI) scale was used through a questionnaire in Google Forms. Descriptive and analytical statistics were obtained. Results: Of the 3,272 young participants, with respect to quality of life, 25.8% (845) had medium or high repercussions, 5.3% were very depressed by the appearance of their skin in the month prior to filling out the questionnaire. When multivariate analysis was performed, it was found that those who had medium or high repercussions due to acne were women (RPa: 1.33; 95%CI: 1.20-1.48; p-value<0.001), those of indigenous ethnicity (RPa: 1.36; 95%CI: 1.05-1.75; p-value=0.019), those who had scars on the face (RPa: 13.08; 95%CI: 10.02-17.05; p-value<0.001) or those who had the father (RPa: 1.13; 95%CI: 1.01-1.25; p-value=0.031) or siblings with acne (RPa: 1.16; 95%CI: 1.04-1.28; p-value=0.005). Conclusion: It was found that gender, belonging to an indigenous ethnicity, having scars on the face or that having a close relative who had suffered from acne were associated with medium or high repercussions on the quality of life; it is important to take care of acne in this stage of life to avoid repercussions in adulthood.

Abstract:Background: Acne is a common dermatological condition affecting adolescents, often leading to psychological issues such as low self-esteem and social appearance anxiety. Understanding the impact of acne on quality of life during adolescence is crucial for developing effective interventions. Objective: To explore the relationship between acne, self-esteem, social appearance anxiety, and quality of life among adolescents, and to identify gender differences and significant predictors of quality of life in this population. Methods: This cross-sectional study employed purposive sampling to recruit 327 adolescents aged 12-19 years from various educational institutions in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Participants completed the Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI), Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Teenager's Quality of Life Index (T-QoL). Informed consent was obtained directly from participants aged 18 and older, and from guardians for those younger than 18. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 25, employing Pearson's correlation, t-tests, and linear regression to assess relationships and predictors. Reliability of the scales was confirmed, and psychometric properties were evaluated. Results: Significant correlations were found between acne and social appearance anxiety (r = 0.523, p < 0.01), acne and self-esteem (r = -0.320, p < 0.01), and acne and quality of life (r = 0.566, p < 0.01). Females reported higher self-esteem (M = 27.46, SD = 4.59) compared to males (M = 26.33, SD = 3.50, t(325) = -2.52, p = 0.01). Social appearance anxiety was the most significant predictor of quality of life (β = 0.61, p < 0.01), followed by self-esteem (β = -0.12, p = 0.01). Conclusion: Acne significantly impacts adolescents' psychological well-being, particularly through increased social appearance anxiety and reduced self-esteem. Gender differences highlight the need for tailored interventions. Addressing social appearance anxiety can improve the quality of life for adolescents with acne.

Abstract:Abstract Background: Acne vulgaris is a visible skin disease commonly seen in adolescence. As it affects the appearance, it is likely to bring stress to the adolescent’s life regarding sensitivity about their appearance. Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the social anxiety level, acne-specific life quality, and self-esteem among adolescents with acne vulgaris. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between these parameters, clinical severity, and sociodemographic data. Methods: One hundred and two adolescents with acne vulgaris, aged 12–17 years without any psychiatric or medical comorbidity were recruited. The control group consisted of 83 adolescents in the same age range, who had neither psychiatric disease nor acne. Sociodemographic form (SDF), Capa Social Phobia Scale for Children and Adolescents (CSPSCA), and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES) were applied to both groups. Additionally, the severity of acne was determined with Global Acne Grading System (GAGS), and life quality of the patients was evaluated with Acne Quality of Life Scale (AQOL). Results: There was no significant difference in social anxiety levels and self-esteem between the study and control groups. Life quality impairment and high social anxiety levels, as well as low self-esteem, were found to be associated regardless of the clinical severity. Conclusion: Clinicians should be aware of the psychiatric comorbidities when treating adolescents with acne vulgaris. Especially, low self-esteem and life quality impairment should warn clinicians to predict high social anxiety levels in adolescent acne patients.

Abstract:Abstract Background Acne vulgaris is the most common dermatoses affecting adolescents with significant impact on their quality of life (QoL). The current study aimed to estimate the prevalence of acne, severity, and its impact on QoL and self-esteem among Egyptian adolescents. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 787 students were selected using multistage stratified random sampling from 12 secondary schools in Alexandria, Egypt. Data was collected using a self-reported questionnaire, and clinical examination was performed. Severity of acne and its impact on QoL and self-esteem were assessed using the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS), Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI), and Coopersmith self-esteem scale, respectively. Results Prevalence of self-reported acne was 34.7%. Females significantly reported acne more frequently than males (39.1% vs. 30.3%, p = 0.009). Prevalence of clinically confirmed acne was 24.4%, with higher rates among females (28.6%) than males (20.2%, p = 0.006). The majority of students had mild acne (75.5%). CADI showed that 11.4% had severe disability. A significant medium positive correlation between GAGS and CADI was found ( r = 0.338, p < 0.01). Among acne group, low self-esteem was more prevalent among females (67.0%) than males (45.0%, p = 0.004). Conclusions Acne is a common problem among Egyptian school-aged adolescents with higher prevalence and impact in females. Our findings should alert health professionals and school authorities to timely identify, manage, and educate adolescents with acne.

Abstract:Background: Impact of acne on the psychological aspect among adolescents and young adults is poorly understood and many times goes unnoticeable. Aim: To assess body image disturbance, self-esteem, quality of life among adolescents and young adults with acne. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional survey on 250 adolescents and young adults aged 13-25 years in Dermatology OPD of a tertiary care hospital, was performed. Severity of acne, body image disturbance, self-esteem, and quality of life were assessed using standardized tools like IGA scale, BIDQ, RSES, and TAQOL respectively. Results: A majority of the participants, 163 (65%), were aged 20–25 years, in which 141 (56.4%) were male, 237 (94.8%) were unmarried, 192 (76.8%) were residing in urban area, 142 (56.8%) were graduate/post-graduate, 173 (69.2%) were students and 113 (45.2%) belonged to upper middle class of socio-economic status. More than half, 137 (54.8%), had a family history of acne, 228 (91.2%) had oily skin, 166 (67.4%) had normal nutritional status, 154 (61.6%) had moderate form of acne whereas 80 (32%) had severe acne. The mean BIDQ score was 3.05 (SD = 0.89); 169 (67.60%) had normal self-esteem and 174 (69.64%) had mild impairment in quality of life. Severity of acne had significant association with body image disturbance (P = 0.007) and quality of life (P = 0.001) but not related with self-esteem. Conclusion: The results revealed body image disturbance and impaired quality of life among adolescents and young adults with acne which draws the attention of dermatologists towards unidentified psychological aspects of acne during treatment. However, the majority of them revealed normal self-esteem in the study.

Abstract:Background: Acne is a prevalent condition among adolescents, significantly impacting their psychological well-being and quality of life. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between acne, social appearance anxiety, and quality of life among adolescents in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Objective: To explore the relationship between acne, social appearance anxiety, and quality of life among adolescents aged 12-19 years and to identify significant predictors of quality of life. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 327 participants (181 males and 146 females) recruited through purposive sampling from various educational institutions in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Data were collected using the Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI), Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS), Teenager's Quality of Life Index (T-QoL), informed consent forms, and a self-developed demographic sheet. Statistical analyses included correlation analysis, regression analysis, and t-tests using SPSS-21. Results: The study revealed a significant positive correlation between acne, social appearance anxiety, and quality of life (p < 0.01). Social appearance anxiety was the most significant predictor of quality of life (B = 0.30, p < 0.01), while age was the least significant (B = 0.23, p = 0.55). Females scored higher on quality of life (M = 12.93, SD = 7.37) compared to males (M = 12.80, SD = 6.64). Males scored higher on acne (M = 6.30, SD = 3.08) and social appearance anxiety (M = 41.31, SD = 13.74) compared to females (acne: M = 5.81, SD = 3.40; social appearance anxiety: M = 40.0, SD = 14.86). Conclusion: The study demonstrated that social appearance anxiety is a significant predictor of quality of life among adolescents with acne. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve the psychological well-being of adolescents affected by acne.

Abstract:In this study, Danish patients with acne had a lower risk of not completing upper secondary education (relative risk (RR): 0.79; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.76–0.83) and higher education (RR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.88–0.91), slightly higher income (mean percentile difference: 2.6%, 95% CI: 2.2–2.9) and lower risk of long‐term unemployment than those without acne (9.8% vs. 11.4%; RR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.87–0.93). The prevalence of being single until age 30 was similar (19.7% vs. 20.1%; adjusted RR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.94–0.98) but childlessness was slightly more prevalent (60.5% vs. 57.5%; adjusted RR: 1.03; 95% CI: 1.02–1.04). However, all associations were attenuated or lost in a secondary analysis restricted to exposure‐discordant siblings to address confounding from family‐related factors. Background Although acne is associated with scarring, mental health comorbidities and bullying, little is known about its impact on socio‐economic outcomes. Objectives To examine the association between acne and educational, labour market and relationship outcomes. Methods We conducted a nationwide registry‐based cohort study in Denmark. We included birth cohorts from 1982 to 1988 and compared those with and without acne identified using hospital diagnosis codes and redeemed prescriptions. Our main educational outcome was educational attainment. The main labour market outcomes were earned income at age 30 and long‐term unemployment at any time before age 30. The main relationship outcomes were single partnership and childlessness by age 30. Outcomes were assessed using Poisson regression for binary outcomes and linear regression for continuous outcomes, adjusted for sex, calendar year, mother's socio‐economic position and hormonal contraception use. Results Those with acne had a lower risk of not completing upper secondary education (relative risk (RR): 0.79; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.76–0.83) and higher education (RR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.88–0.91), with absolute differences up to 4 percentage points. Abstract:Background and Objective: Acne vulgaris is a chronic condition affecting more than 85% of adolescents and young adults. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of acne vulgaris and its impact on quality of life (QoL) and to study socio-demographic factors, family history and lifestyle among the selected schools at Jalahalli area in Bengaluru. Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive cross sectional school based study and 200 subjects were included. Predesigned, questionnaire to assess socio-demographic profile and QoL and symptoms of acne vulgaris were administered to the participants fulfilling inclusion criteria. Data were obtained by using different methods such as Global Acne Grading System (GAGS), Cardiff Acne Disability Index and Children’s Dermatology Life Quality Index/Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI/DLQI) respectively. SPSS 18.0 software was used for data analysis. Results: Findings showed that Acne prevalence was 87% affecting both sexes. Self-reported mild acne was present in 85.1% and moderate severe acne in 14.9% of the adolescents. The mean age of the subjects was 14.78 years, with 52.5% females and 47.5% males. A strong relation was found between the severity of acne and QoL (p<0.001). Heredity was correlated with acne and its severity was significant. Conclusion: Acne affects the QoL of an adolescent, and the impact is proportional to the severity of acne. Severe acne is associated with a greater effect on QoL. Evaluation of QoL in such patients may greatly help in the better management of acne, hence improving their quality of life. Keywords: Acne vulgaris; Adolescent; Quality of life; GAGS; CDLQI; DLQI.
Effects of acne severity and acne-related quality of life on depressive symptoms among adolescents and young adults: a cross-sectional study in Bangladesh

Abstract:Introduction: Depression is a common mental health disorder and one of the major causes of disability. This study aimed at investigating the relationship of acne severity and acne-related quality of life with depressive symptoms, and the mediating effect of acne-related quality of life in a relationship between acne severity and depressive symptoms. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Data were collected from acne patients attending a tertiary-level hospital, using a questionnaire that comprised three validated instruments – Investigator's Global Assessment (a single item) scale, Cardiff Acne Disability Index, and Beck Depression Inventory for measuring acne severity, acne-related quality of life, and depressive symptoms, respectively. Logistic regression and linear regression were used to examine the association between acne severity and depressive symptoms and a correlation between the acne-related quality of life and depressive symptoms, respectively. A mediation analysis was also performed to see the mediation effects of acne-related quality of life in a relationship between acne severity and depressive symptoms. Results: A total of 185 acne patients (155 females, 83.8%) with a mean age was 22.55 ± 8.67 years were included in the study. Adolescents and young adults with severe and moderate acne had 6.14-and 2.28 times higher odds of depression compared to their peers with mild acne, respectively. Patients with low levels of acne-related quality of life had a higher level of depressive symptoms ( β = 0.42, p < 0.001). The total effect (direct + indirect) was also significant ( β = 0.27, 95% CI: 1.29–4.09), implying the effect of acne severity on depression. Conclusion: The present study suggests that acne severity and acne-related quality of life were associated with depressive symptoms among patients with acne vulgaris. The study also indicates that the relationship between acne severity and depressive symptoms might occur through a chain-mediating effect of acne disability in this population.

Abstract:BackgroundAcne vulgaris is a common adolescent disorder but the data related to acne vulgaris is insufficient in Albania. ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess the epidemiologic features of acne vulgaris and to identify lifestyle and constitutional factors in formulating a proper management protocol. MethodsA cross‐sectional study conducted on a representative sample of 2036 adolescents from 10 high schools located in Tirana. A self‐administered questionnaire was administered to collect the data. The binary logistic regression was applied to assess the factors linked to the presence of acne vulgaris in adolescents. ResultsThe mean age in the study population was 16.2 ± 0.9 years. The self‐reported prevalence of acne was 50.3% (52.1% in females and 47.9% in males). Lifetime prevalence was 68.5%. The factors significantly associated with an increased likelihood over time were: frequent consumption of sweets, frequent endurance of stress, poor quality of sleep, positive family history of acne, oily and combination skin, menstrual disorders. ConclusionsAcne vulgaris is common among adolescents in our country. The identification of various modifiable factors related to acne generates opportunities to tailor and focus prevention efforts and better management and treatment planning in relevant high‐risk groups.This article is protected by copyright. Prevalence and quality of life of secondary school students with acne vulgaris in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Acne vulgaris is one of the most common dermal medical conditions that affect adolescents and young adults. The psychosocial impacts of acne appear in terms of social, vocational, and academic performance. This study aimed to determine the self-reported prevalence of acne and its repercussions on the quality of life of high and secondary school pupils in Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted among secondary and high school students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted among 901 students from different schools in the Riyadh region who were randomly included using a questionnaire distributed online. The Cardiff Acne Disability Index was used to assess the quality of life of acne students. After collecting the data, MS Excel was used for data entry, cleaning, and coding. SPSS version 23 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) was used for data analysis. Results: The prevalence of acne among students was 57.4 %. According to the Cardiff Acne Disability Index, 19.4 % of patients with acne had a high disability, 40.1 % had a moderate disability, and 40.5 % had a low disability. The index score in this study ranged from 0 (16 patients showed a score of zero with a percentage of 3.1%) to 15 (16 patients showed a score of 15 with a percentage of 3.1%) with a mean score of 6.15 (standard deviation=3.79). Conclusion: This study confirmed the results of previous studies that acne causes quality of life disabilities among school-age students. Our study showed a high prevalence of acne among students with a more significant negative impact than previous studies. Keywords: Acne vulgaris, teens, quality of life, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Acne vulgaris is a common, chronic, inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit that affects most teenagers with inflammatory lesions on the face and trunk. They are mainly caused by increased sebum production, hyperkeratinization of the follicle, inflammation, hormonal changes, misuse of cosmetic and dermatological preparations. This condition is more common in adolescents, but it also occurs in patients in their twenties and thirties too. These changes in the skin affect emotional stress and quality of life. Dermocosmetics play a special role in the care and treatment of acne-prone skin. A series of complementary dermocosmetics are available, which include products with cleansing, active, soothing and moisturizing properties. Dermocosmetics formulated with active substances can be used in acne monotherapy based on the effectiveness of specific active ingredients in alleviating acne symptoms without any adverse effects reported so far. Effective skincare serves not only as a preventative measure by addressing the underlying causes of acne, but also helps mitigate the negative effects of pharmacological therapy and helps manage complications such as scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This study aims the evaluation of the awareness of adolescents in relation to the treatment of acne and their knowledge about the use of cosmetic and dermatological preparations. Based on our results 40% of teenagers didn’t consult a dermatologist but used preparations that they see on social media and that their effectiveness was lower than 30%. 38% of the teenagers have used the therapy and the food regime that the dermatologist recommended which lead to a 75% effectiveness on treatment, 12% have used lotions recommended by their pharmacists and didn’t follow the food regime from which they had an effectiveness of only 42%. We also noticed that the patients who followed the instructions of the dermatologist and the pharmacist had more efficiency, while the others had less efficiency. From this we can conclude that any change in the skin for better efficiency should be managed by a dermatologist.
Alexithymia in Adolescents with Acne: Association with Quality of Life Impairment and Stigmatization

Abstract:Alexithymia seems to be more common among patients with skin diseases. However, studies on acne patients are very limited. We conducted this study to evaluate alexithymia in adolescents with acne. In our cross-sectional study, 730 high school students (mean age: 17.05 ± 1.18 years) were recruited. The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) was used to measure alexithymia, the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) was employed to study quality of life (QoL), and the 6-item Stigmatization Scale (6ISS) was used to evaluate the level of stigmatization in acne subjects. Alexithymia was found in 31% of adolescents, with similar prevalence among those with and without acne (31.3% and 30.1%, respectively). The mean scoring on the TAS-20 in patients with acne (53.1 ± 12.8 points) was not significantly different from that of the non-acne group (53.5 ± 11.9 points). However, significant correlations between TAS-20 scores and QoL assessments (r = 0.332, p < 0.001) as well as stigmatization level (r = 0.284, p < 0.001) were found. These correlations were also significant for the domains of alexithymia described as difficulty in identifying feelings (DIF) and difficulty in describing feelings (DDF), but not for externally oriented thinking (EOT). The findings clearly showed that acne does not predispose to alexithymia; however, alexithymia in acne subjects is related to impaired QoL and stigmatization.

Abstract:Background: Acne vulgaris is a common chronic skin disorder that is defined by inflammation of the pilosebaceous units and has a variety of symptoms and treatment options. Acne is very prevalent among teenagers, and it can linger far into adulthood. In this study, the dermatological life quality index was assessed in acne vulgaris patients. Methods: This is a hospital based prospective cross-sectional questionnaire study done on acne vulgaris patients attending the dermatology outpatient department in a tertiary care hospital in Saurashtra region, Gujarat. Quality of life (QoL) was measured using both acne specific (Cardiff acne disability index (CADI)) questionnaire and skin disease specific (Dermatology life quality index (DLQI)) questionnaire. Results: In our study, women outweighed men (M:F ratio=1:1.43). Those between the ages of 15 and 20 were the most affected. The average DLQI score was 5.5947. The vast majority had a 'minor impact' on QoL. Females had a lower QoL than males. In general, grade 2 acne was the most common kind of acne. Males were more likely to have grade 3 acne. The majority of the patients (84%) experienced embrassement or heightened self-consciousness as a result of their acne. Conclusions: Our research reveals that acne has a detrimental influence on QoL, demonstrating the need for a comprehensive approach to treating the body and mind for overall well-being.

Abstract:Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases worldwide and causes great distress to patients. In addition, most acne patients suffer from low self-esteem and social withdrawal. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of acne and its impact on quality of life among medical students. It also evaluates the patterns of self-treatment use. The study population consisted of all medical students from An-Najah National University (ANU) and the hospital. The questionnaire consists of three parts, and the first part consists of questions regarding demographic information. The second part consisted of questions to measure the severity of acne using the acne severity scale as well as the Cardiff Disability Index, which assesses the quality of life concerning acne in medical students. Finally, the third part consisted of questions exploring and assessing acne self-treatment. The mean age of our study sample was 21.3 ± 1.9 years, with a female predominance of 72.3%. The prevalence of acne among medical students was 80.9%, and 36.6% practiced self-medication. Acne was strongly associated with female sex ( p < 0.001) and skin type ( p = 0.024). Regarding diet, dairy consumption ( p = 0.007), sweets ( p < 0.001), chocolate ( p < 0.001), and oily food ( p = 0.006) were all significantly associated with acne. Skin type was strongly associated with the severity of acne ( p < 0.001) and the Cardiff acne disability index ( p = 0.016). Gender ( p = 0.039) was also associated with Cardiff acne disability. A significant correlation was found between the severity of acne and impaired quality of life. The most commonly used topical agent for self-treatment remedies was antibiotics (70.3%). The most commonly used oral agent was isotretinoin (9.4%). A total of 22.7% of the students used herbal products, while 47.7% used home remedies. Acne is prevalent among medical students, with a high percentage of students having different degrees of impairment in their daily lives. As a result, self-medication among acne sufferers is highly common. Awareness of the appropriate use of self-medication should increase among medical students.

Prevalence and psychosocial impact of acne vulgaris among high school and university students in Sarawak, Malaysia

Abstract:Background: Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition that affects adolescents and young adults. Its psychosocial impact can be significant. The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of acne vulgaris and its psychosocial impact among high school and university students in Kuching, Sarawak. In addition, the clinical characteristics of acne and its potential predisposing factors were assessed. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among high school and university students in Kuching, Sarawak. A team of dermatology-trained doctors examined a representative sample of high school and university students aged 16 to 25 years to identify acne vulgaris. The Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) was used to assess the psychosocial impact of acne on affected individuals. The Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) was used to determine the severity of acne. Demographic data and clinical characteristics of acne were recorded. Results: A total of 582 students aged 16 to 25 years were recruited. The overall prevalence of acne vulgaris was 75.8% (n=441). The prevalence of acne was highest (85.5%) in the age group of 16-18 years. There was a significantly higher tendency for male students to have moderate to severe acne (p=0.010). A significantly higher proportion of female students had impaired quality of life (p<0.001) compared to male students. In comparison to male students, the mean DLQI scores were significantly higher in female students in the domains of 'Work and school' and 'Personal relationship' (p<0.05). There were 41 students who had a very large impact on the quality of life with a DLQI score of 11-20 and 34 (82.9%) of them had mild acne. There was a significantly higher proportion of students who had frequent insomnia in the group of students with acne compared to those without acne (11.6% vs. 4.3%, p=0.011). There was no significant association of acne vulgaris with dietary intakes, such as chocolates, sweets, potato chips, yoghurt, milk, fried chicken, ice cream, nuts and carbonated drinks (p>0.05). Of the 441 students with acne, 247 (56%) had not sought any medical attention. Conclusion: Acne vulgaris impacts the quality of life similarly to psoriasis, atopic eczema, and chronic urticaria. In mild acne cases, the quality of life may be significantly affected. Therefore, acne education is required in high schools and colleges to ensure that students understand their disease and are aware of available treatments.
Psychodermatologic pathology in adolescents: findings from the Colombian National Mental Health Survey

Abstract:Abstract Background Associations between mental health and dermatology have generated a new branch of study called psychodermatology, which includes relevant conditions to the adolescent population. However, there is limited research focusing on this field and this specific population. Objective To estimate the prevalence of dermatological pathologies in the Colombian adolescent population and their possible associations with mental health conditions. Methods We performed a secondary analysis of the Colombian National Mental Health Survey results. A representative sample of the adolescent Colombian population answered questions regarding dermatological conditions and mental health disorders. We estimated the prevalence and evaluated associations using the chi squared independence test. Results Of 1753 adolescents, 8.3% (CI95%=[6.8–10.1]) had dermatitis or skin allergies and 4.5% (CI95%=[3.3–6.1]) acne. For dermatitis, we found associations with age, education, and family dysfunction (p-Values=0.024; <0.001; 0.046 respectively). Acne was associated with age, sex, educational level, the number of social groups involved in, alcohol consumption, psychoactive substances use and previous violent experiences (respective p-Values=0.007; 0.004; 0.005; 0.036; 0.002; 0.003; 0.044). Regarding mental health, dermatological conditions were associated with depression, affective disorders, suicide attempt and suicide ideation. Conclusion Our results are the first to describe the prevalence of these disorders in Colombia. This is an exploratory study; nonetheless, it is of great value since it is the first to describe these associations in adolescents in a middle-income country, which should be considered during clinical examinations. Further longitudinal studies evaluating possible causal relationship between psychiatric and dermatological conditions are fundamental to establish causal links.

Abstract:While there has been research on the diffusion of a particular type of innovation, few if any studies have examined the acceptance of a set of innovations (behavioral innovativeness) over time. This study, using the Rasch methodology, found evidence that computer hardware innovations are adopted in a particular order. The same could not be said for computer software, whose acceptance may be application-based. This study applied a theoretical framework based on the diffusion of innovation literature (Rodgers, 1995). Data was collected via a telephone survey of 302 computer users. Scores obtained from the Rasch analysis were used as the dependent variable (that of behavioral innovativeness) in a regression analysis, against factors such as overall innovativeness, use innovativeness, opinion leadership/acceptance, product class knowledge, and use of sources of information.
The Acne Education Project: An educational initiative to improve acne health literacy and promote help-seeking behavior in young adolescents

Abstract:Background: Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory skin condition that is associated with poor acne health literacy. Diminished acne health literacy leads to delays in the access of health care, resulting in mismanagement, disfigurement, and psychosocial morbidity. This study evaluates the potential role of early acne education in young adolescent populations to improve acne health literacy and facilitate help-seeking behavior. Methods: The Acne Education Project is a Canadian medical student-led initiative founded to create evidence-based resources to increase acne health literacy. A 45-min interactive Zoom presentation on acne was created and delivered to 2292 students ages 9-13 in British Columbia, Canada. A quality improvement survey was administered pre-intervention, immediate post-intervention, and 1-month post-intervention to evaluate baseline acne knowledge and knowledge retention to guide presentation and resource development. Results: Responses from 676 unique individuals were collected. Analysis using linear mixed-effects models demonstrated that respondents were significantly more confident in their general knowledge of acne, strategies to prevent acne, identification of psychosocial sequelae of acne, and more willing to seek help immediately post-intervention (p < .001). Differences in scores were not fully preserved in magnitude at the 1-month post-intervention assessment. However, students still scored significantly higher in all categories compared to the pre-intervention baseline (p < .001). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that early acne education can improve acne health literacy and promote help-seeking behavior. Given the potential long-term implications, further research is needed to explore the long-term impact of early acne education and the benefit of integrating acne education into the public education curriculum in Canada.

Abstract:A suitable portion of the total population still suffers through acne vulgaris, a widespread dermatological illness that mostly affects teens and young adults. Although acne is typically considered to be a cosmetic problem, recent research has concluded that certainly it has a significant role on impacting many physiological aspects of human health. This thorough investigation attempts to examine the intricate effects of acne on human physiology, taking into consideration both systemic and local effects. The study synthesizes research from a number of scientific disciplines, including dermatology, endocrinology, immunology, and psychoneuroimmunology. It investigates the complex interrelationships between several factors, such as sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, hormone imbalance, and <i>Propionibacterium acnes</i> colonisation, that lead to the development of acne. The study also sheds information on the intricate physiological mechanisms, oxidative stress, and immune response that contribute to the aetiology of acne. Along with it, the review investigates the relationship between endocrine problems and acne, emphasizing hormonal anomalies and their possible role in acne severity. The psychological effects of acne are also discussed, including the psychological problems, concerns with self-esteem, and decreased quality of life that acne sufferers encounter. On comprehensively examining the diverse physiological aspects affected by acne, this review provides a foundation for future research endeavours and informs the development of targeted therapeutic interventions. Ultimately, the integration of multidisciplinary approaches will enable healthcare professionals to address the physiological complexities of acne and improve the overall well-being of individuals affected by this common skin condition.
