Abstract:Lithium (Li) has been considered as the backbone of modern energy infrastructures. In recent years, the production rate of Li has lagged behind the global demand due to the proliferation of electric devices and vehicles. To ensure a stable and sustainable supply of Li, electrochemical extraction of Li from unconventional aqueous sources, especially seawater containing almost inexhaustible Li resource, has received extensive attention. To proceed the way to real practices, this review covers a broad knowledge of electrochemical Li recovery processes, including cell configurations, working principles, and performance metrics. Specifically, Li-selective materials (electrodes, adsorbents, and membranes), pivotal to achieve superior Li selectivity and extraction performance, has been carefully summarized to spur innovative design strategies. Herein, an integrated system is conceived where electrochemical Li recovery unit functions as a bridge to connect desalination plant and battery industry, offering a feasible solution to circular economy at the water-energy nexus.

Solar-enhanced lithium extraction with self-sustaining water recycling from salt-lake brines.

Abstract:Lithium is an emerging strategic resource for modern energy transformation toward electrification and decarbonization. However, current mainstream direct lithium extraction technology via adsorption suffers from sluggish kinetics and intensive water usage, especially in arid/semiarid and cold salt-lake regions (natural land brines). Herein, an efficient proof-of-concept integrated solar microevaporator system is developed to realize synergetic solar-enhanced lithium recovery and water footprint management from hypersaline salt-lake brines. The 98% solar energy harvesting efficiency of the solar microevaporator system, elevating its local temperature, greatly promotes the endothermic Li+ extraction process and solar steam generation. Benefiting from the photothermal effect, enhanced water flux, and enriched local Li+ supply in nanoconfined space, a double-enhanced Li+ recovery capacity was delivered (increase from 12.4 to 28.7 mg g-1) under one sun, and adsorption kinetics rate (saturated within 6 h) also reached twice of that at 280 K (salt-lake temperature). Additionally, the self-assembly rotation feature endows the microevaporator system with distinct self-cleaning desalination ability, achieving near 100% water recovery from hypersaline brines for further self-sufficient Li+ elution. Outdoor comprehensive solar-powered experiment verified the feasibility of basically stable lithium recovery ability (>8 mg g-1) directly from natural hypersaline salt-lake brines with self-sustaining water recycling for Li+ elution (440 m3 water recovery per ton Li2CO3). This work offers an integrated solution for sustainable lithium recovery with near zero water/carbon consumption toward carbon neutrality.

Correction of intensity variations in MR images for computer-aided tissue classification

Abstract:A number of supervised and unsupervised pattern recognition techniques have been proposed in recent years for the segmentation and the quantitative analysis of MR images. However, the efficacy of these techniques is affected by acquisition artifacts such as inter-slice, intra-slice, and inter-patient intensity variations. Here a new approach to the correction of intra-slice intensity variations is presented. Results demonstrate that the correction process enhances the performance of backpropagation neural network classifiers designed for the segmentation of the images. Two slightly different versions of the method are presented. The first version fits an intensity correction surface directly to reference points selected by the user in the images. The second version fits the surface to reference points obtained by an intermediate classification operation. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of both methods reveals that the first one leads to a better correction of the images than the second but that it is more sensitive to operator errors.

Abstract:With the rapid increase of various electronic products with lithium-ion batteries in our daily life, it is difficult to provide enough supplement to satisfy the growing demand of the market only through exploiting limited lithium resources on land. Consequently, lithium recovery from salt-lake brines, geothermal brines, wastewater from the treatment of wasted batteries, or even sea water has attracted great interest all around the world due to the abundant reserves and low price. Nowadays, various conventional technologies such as solar evaporation-precipitation way have been widely applied to extract lithium from the aqueous solution. Unfortunately, they are always time-consuming, uncontrollable with the secondary pollution generation. Recently, various electrochemical technologies have been received considerable attention for lithium recovery owing to their time-saving, little environmental impact as well as high efficiency. Herein, progresses for lithium recovery using the electrochemical technologies were outlined and discussed based on the previous studies reported in the literatures. The principles, advantages and challenges of electrochemical technologies were critically reviewed. Even though these methods are technically feasible, they are still limited by the poor technical maturity for the large-scale lithium recovery. Thence, more efforts should be made in the future development of electrochemical technologies for improving lithium selectivity as well as material stability, and simultaneously reducing some energy consumption and investing and operating costs. It could provide guidance on the development and design of more attractive electrochemical methods for lithium recovery from liquid resources, which will contribute to achieving the sustainable and renewable society.

Lithium Metal Recovery from Sea Water by a Flexible and Scalable Membrane with Lithium-Ion Exclusive Channels

Abstract:Sea water is abundant in lithium reserves, and extracting lithium metal from it holds the potential to not only mitigate the shortage of lithium in light of the fast-growing electric vehicle industry, but also serve as an anode electrode to provide electricity. The task, however, is challenging due to the harsh reactions and low lithium concentration in sea water. Here, we present a single-channel strategy based on a flexible and scalable lithium ion-sieve membrane for efficient lithium extraction. Our composite membrane exhibits high separation factor βLi/Na of more than 2.87 × 107 with an ionic conductivity of 6.2×10-5 S cm-1. Lithium metal was electrolytically extracted from sea water through a hybrid-electrolyte system, which yielded a high Coulombic efficiency of 98.04% and a low energy consumption of 17.4 kWh kgLi-1 at an optimized extracting current of 200 μA cm-2. The extracted lithium metal can be directly integrated into a lithium-sulfur battery, delivering an energy output of 395 Wh kg-1. To demonstrate its industrial viability, we also fabricate a pouch cell with Li metal anode extracted by an amplified extraction prototype. This study has the potential to dispel concerns of lithium depletion and facilitate the sustainable development of lithium-based energy storage systems.
A green and sustainable strategy toward lithium resources recycling from spent batteries

Abstract:Recycling lithium from spent batteries is challenging because of problems with poor purity and contamination. Here, we propose a green and sustainable lithium recovery strategy for spent batteries containing LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 electrodes. Our proposed configuration of "lithium-rich electrode || LLZTO@LiTFSI+P3HT || LiOH" system achieves double-side and roll-to-roll recycling of lithium-containing electrode without destroying its integrity. The LiTFSI+P3HT-modified LLZTO membrane also solves the H+/Li+ exchange problem and realizes a waterproof protection of bare LLZTO in the aqueous working environment. On the basis of these advantages, our system shows high Li selectivity (97%) and excellent Faradaic efficiency (≥97%), achieving high-purity (99%) LiOH along with the production of H2. The Li extraction processes for spent LiFePO4, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, and LiCoO2 batteries is shown to be economically feasible. Therefore, this study provides a previously unexplored technology with low energy consumption as well as high economic and environmental benefits to realize sustainable lithium recycling from spent batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous as energy storage technology in mobile electronics and hybrid electric vehicles. There is a necessity to develop new lithium extraction technologies to meet growing demand and diversify the global lithium supply chain. Electrochemical recovery is a promising method of Li + extraction that is highly lithium selective, environmentally friendly and economical. In this work, the hydrophilicity of ZnO-coated LiMn 2 O 4 (derived from regenerated lithium-ion battery cathode materials, rLMO) is modulated to construct electrochemical systems for the recovery of lithium from brine. The effects of current density, potential, the concentration of simulated brine, and the concentration of recovery solution on lithium extraction from the simulated brine are investigated via the response surface methodology-central composites design. The structure and morphology of the materials during lithium extraction were studied using SEM, TEM, XRD and Raman, and the electrochemical lithium extraction performance was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic and constant voltage. rLMO with Li vacancies has the dual functions of selective lithium extraction and ZnO coating to adjust the interface hydrophilicity, which can effectively improve the electrochemical performance. The average electro-adsorption capacity of the ZnO-modulate rLMO was 13.12 mg/g/cycle over five cycles. In the high-concentration feed solution (240 mM), the maximum adsorption capacity was 41.06 mg/g.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are the primary power source for electric vehicles and portable electronic devices, creating a massive demand to mine and extract lithium. So far, lithium extraction has focused on brine and geological deposits. Yet, access to the enormous amount of lithium (at low concentration) in the earth's oceans and other aqueous media remains challenging. Electrodialysis with Li-selective ceramic membranes could effectively separate lithium from seawater but at a high energy cost. Reversible electrochemical processes, like redox flow batteries, can overcome the limitation of electrodialysis-based systems. Herein we propose a system combining Li-selective ceramic membranes and a simple redox flow electrolyte to accomplish continuous lithium recovery from seawater. The lithiumextraction redox flow battery (LE-RFB) extracts dissolved lithium with a purity of 93.5% from simulated seawater, corresponding to a high Li/Mg selectivity factor of about 500.000:1. Benefiting from a low operating voltage, 1 g of lithium is extracted with only 2.5 Wh of energy consumption.

Abstract:Mining lithium from the ocean has long been impeded by the lack of suitable lithium extracting technology. So far, adsorption and electrochemical strategies have been investigated. However, application of the adsorption method was limited by low adsorption rate and dissolution of adsorbent. In addition, experiments using the electrochemical method were either confined to lithium-enriched brine or performed in static electrochemical cell, which requires replacement of electrode. Herein, we report a fluidic electrochemical extraction (FEE) route for lithium extraction from seawater. This FEE system consists of an oxygen evolution cathode, a MnO2 working electrode, and an oxygen reduction anode. In operation, a voltage was applied on the cells to force Li+ to enter into MnO2 and release it as LiOH raw material. By virtue of the flow architecture, we have successfully extracted lithium from seawater with 7.0 ppm Li+. The highest absorption capacity reaches up to 20.6 mg Li+ per 1.0 g MnO2 for 0.8 h, corresponding to an electrical energy consumption of 7.2 Wh for extracting 1.0 g Li+. Abstract:Electrochemical recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (sLIBs) is potentially cost-effective and consumes fewer chemicals than traditional metallurgical processes. However, severe side reactions and low system durability limit its practical applications. Herein, a redox-mediated electrochemical recycling strategy was developed for continuous Li extraction from spent LiFePO4 (sLFP), coupled with low-energy-consumption hydrogen production. Phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) was employed as a green redox mediator to achieve fast and selective Li extraction from sLFP, and the reduced PMA was instantaneously electro-regenerated for subsequent extractions. In the assembled electrochemical flow cell, the Li recovery efficiency reached 97.8%, and the Faradaic efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction was approximately 100%. Furthermore, the redox-mediated sLFP-hydrogen coupling system required only 0.5 V of cell voltage to produce hydrogen, significantly lower than that of ∼1.65 V in the traditional water splitting process. This work presents a promising and sustainable route for the simultaneous recycling of sLIB and production of clean hydrogen fuels.

Abstract:The current soaring market for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in energy storage devices has promoted the recycling and utilization of secondary resources, including retired LIBs. However, current recycling technologies are confronted with numerous deficiencies in balancing extraction efficiency, energy consumption, emissions, and profit. Here, we propose a well-designed thermal oxidation strategy for pyro-process-based Li extraction from spent LiFePO 4 (S-LFP), which involves the application of a molten sulfate infiltration–oxidation synergistically controlled reaction occurring at a low temperature (300 °C) and constitutes a one-step preparation with high lithium recovery (>99%) and a high-value iron phosphate (FPO) product. The regenerated LiFePO 4 (R-LFP) materials as recycled products exhibit an excellent discharge capacity (136.2 mA h g −1 at 1C) and cycling stability (98.9% capacity retention after 100 cycles). The economic analysis verifies a profit increase of 155% per kilogram and an emission decrease of 216% for this strategy compared with traditional hydrometallurgical processes. The proposed approach is particularly appealing due to its high profit, industrial feasibility, and environmental benefits.

Abstract:The sustainability of lithium-based energy storage or conversion systems, e.g., lithium-ion batteries, can be enhanced by establishing methods of efficient lithium extraction from harsh brines. In this work, we describe a decoupled membrane-free electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions between iron-phosphate electrodes and features cathode (brine) and anode (fresh water) compartments that are isolated from each other yet electrochemically connected through a pair of silver/silver-halide redox electrodes. This design is compatible with harsh brines having magnesium/lithium molar ratios of up to 3258 and lithium concentrations down to 0.15 millimolar, enabling the production of battery-grade (>99.95% pure) lithium carbonate. Energy savings of up to ~21.5% were realized by efficiently harvesting the osmotic energy of the brines. A pilot-scale cell with an electrode surface area of 33.75 square meters was used to realize lithium extraction from Dead Sea brine with a recovery rate of 84.0%.

Abstract:Hydrometallurgical recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is among the most promising recovery approaches. The current hydrometallurgical method for battery recycling faces challenges such as complex separation and precipitation processes, and environmental concerns from the use of caustic inorganic acid and hazardous hydrogen peroxide. Our proposed modified method, namely polyol-metallurgy, uses citric acid in ethylene glycol as dual-function green solution to overcome these obstacles. This bifunctional solution leaches valuable metal ions from cathode materials (e.g., LiCoO 2 ), and then acts as chelating agents to selectivxely precipitate cobalt through an esterification reaction, without the need for additional precipitation agents. The leaching efficiency of cobalt and lithium reaches 99.55 % and 97.65 %, respectively, and more than 96 % of cobalt could be directly self-precipitated and recovered. The unique characteristics of the dual-function solution also avoids impurities from Al foils and PVDF/carbon black films, enabling the simple separation process. Therefore, the process can be completed in one-pot system with efficient leaching, separation and coprecipitation, making it more efficient and feasible for operation than existing alternatives.

Abstract:Excessive chemical consumption and its concomitant secondary pollution have become persistent issues in the wet chemical recycling process of spent LiFePO4 batteries (sLFP). In this study, a prospective recycling strategy is proposed based on sustainable proton circulation between organic leachants, extractants, and strippants, whereby expensive organic leachants can be regenerated and secondary pollutants are reduced. The leaching dependence of the sLFP powder on the structure of the organic leachants is determined. Monocarboxylic acids with low pKa and short carbon chains exhibit preferable lithium leaching performance (98.7 % for formic acid), and the leaching behavior of metal impurities (Al, Cu) are coupled with organic acid complexation and solution pH. The direct separation of lithium from organic leachates is explored with acidic extractants for the first time. Benefitting from the buffering capacity toward protons and the salt-out effect of organic acid anions, Li element could be successfully extracted with di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and the organic acids can be significantly regenerated by proton exchange equilibrium. Dilute H3PO4 is employed to selectively strip Li and contribute protons to regenerate the extractant, where the separation factors of Li/Cu and Li/Al are 148.9 and 54.1, respectively. Through two-stage counter-current extraction and stripping processes, the extraction and stripping efficiency of Li could enhance to 98.62 % and 99.38 %, respectively. Thus, the Li overall yield in the leaching-extraction-stripping processes is calculated as 96.73 %, exhibiting promising prospects for proposed proton circulation strategy.

Abstract:Lithium reserves in seawater are tens of thousands of times higher than on land, making it a promising candidate for lithium resources. A lithium extraction method based on a solar-powered electrolysis technique with a solid-state electrolyte, Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP), as the selective membrane has been reported to obtain metallic lithium from seawater. Herein, the electrolytic cell is optimised by replacing the anode catalyst materials. The NiO@SP anode shows excellent electrochemical performance, relatively high energy utilization efficiency and low cost among the anode materials investigated. An electrolytic cell adopting NiO@SP achieves a lithium production efficiency of 57.2 mg W h-1 with a potential of 4.5 V at a current density of 333 μA cm-2. Based on the investigation by in situ mass spectroscopy the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and chlorine evolution reaction (CER) occur together on the anode with the production of oxygen and hypochlorite.
Highly efficient and stable Li extraction device by coupling Li4Ti5O12 electrode and matching perfluoro electrolyte

Abstract:Based on the large extraction efficiency of 10–200 μg cm−2 h−1, the electrolysis-based technology is one of the most promising methods for large-scale extraction of lithium resources from natural seawater. The high potential safety hazard is the inherent defect of the conventional two-electrode electrolytic cell because of the threshold voltage of 3.9 V, which is very close to the decomposition voltage of carbonate electrolytes (4.5–5.0 V). Herein, we designed a novel triple-electrode device, using spinel Li4Ti5O12 and 1 M LiPF6/FEC + FEMC + HFE respectively as a temporary carrier for storing Li-ions and perfluorinated electrolyte. The threshold voltage of the multi-electrode device is lowered to 2.3 V, which expands the electrochemical window for lithium resource extraction from 1.1 V to 2.7 V. LTO electrode carrier is impossible to electrocatalyze the as-prepared fluoride electrolyte; the compound electrolyte is chemically stable to Li metal as well, avoiding the formation of lithium dendrites. Therefore, the Li4Ti5O12/Li battery exhibits outstanding cycle performances of 99.3% Coulombic efficiency and 95% capacity retention during 250 cycles. Multi-electrode electrochemical devices have shown high safety, stability and extraction efficiency in the practice of extracting Li metal from natural seawater, which is very beneficial to the development of marine mineral resources.

Innovative Electrochemical Strategy to Recovery of Cathode and Efficient Lithium Leaching from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is of great importance for environmental protection and resusing resources. This work proposes a green and environmentally friendly recycling strategy of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material for spent batteries by an electrochemical method. In the designed electrolysis cell, the produced gaseous species from oxidation of solvent molecules occurring at the interfaces between electrode/cathode materials and active particles/binder exert the force to separate bonded particles from current collector. Meanwhile, the efficient leaching of lithium (>98%) into electrolyte was achieved under an electric field without additional leaching process. The Al can also be recovered in the form of metallic foil. The separation of active material, the selective leaching of lithium, and recovery of Al foil are conducted by one-step electrolysis in a short operating cycle. The remaining transition metals in residues were reused to synthesize LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 material. As the cathode material, the regenerated active material delivers an initial capacity of 161 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and 88.3% remains after 200 cycles. The superior cycling stability is comparable to the unused commercial batteries. This innovative approach can be readily extended to recover other types of cathode materials for spent lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The demand for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) for use in electric vehicles, which is key to realizing a decarbonized society, is accelerating. However, the supply of Li resources has recently become a major issue, thereby necessitating the development of economical and sustainable technologies of brine/seawater-based Li extraction and recycling Li from spent LIBs. This paper presents an innovative electrochemical pumping technology based on a new cell structure for Li extraction/recovery. This system can provide large electrochemical driving forces while preventing the occurrence of electronic conduction due to electrolyte reduction. This electrochemical pumping system allows extraction/recovery of Li ions from the anode side to the cathode side, rather than the diffusion of other ions, due to the ion-diffusion-bottleneck size of the electrolyte material. Using this system, high-purity Li can be collected with high energy efficiency and at least 464 times faster than that via conventional electrochemical pumping, even with a commercially available Li-ion electrolyte plate.

Abstract:The amount of global hybrid-electric and all electric vehicle has increased dramatically in just five years and reached an all-time high of over 10 million units in 2022. A good deal of waste lithium (Li)-containing batteries from dead vehicles are invaluable unconventional resources with high usage of Li. However, the recycle of Li by green approaches is extremely inefficient and rare from waste batteries, giving rise to severe environmental pollutions and huge squandering of resources. Thus, in this mini review, we briefly summarized a green and promising route-photoelectrochemical (PEC) technology for extracting the Li from the waste lithium-containing batteries. This review first focuses on the critical factors of PEC performance, including light harvesting, charge-carrier dynamics, and surface chemical reactions. Subsequently, the conventional and PEC technologies applying in the area of Li recovery processes are analyzed and discussed in depth, and the potential challenges and future perspective for rational and healthy development of PEC Li extraction are provided positively.
